What To Expect Our lives and everything in them are up to us, whether they are purposefully designed or ignorantly neglected. This work features simple foundational guidelines and tips pertaining to the former; intentional design of our lives in all aspects. These items range from our attitude, our physical and mental health, our diets, our careers, our families, our experiences and everything else that comprises a life well lived. In the end these are meant to act as a guide. The final use and implementation is up to the designer; you. So, at the end of the day, what you do with this information, is up to you.

Square One Wherever you begin, whether it be a project, a new venture or heading toward a goal, you will inevitably be starting from square one; the foundations, the ground level. You will start as a beginner, meaning you likely won’t be very good yet. That’s ok, that is where everyone starts, and sadly enough, some people don’t even get to that starting line. But, if you want to get anywhere new, you must start, and starting wherever you’re beginning from is perfect. As you continue on your path and through continued effort and practice you will get better and better, building up solidity and deeper understanding in your skills or venture. Your progression upward is inevitable, you simply need to start, then keep going. Start today, lay down a solid foundation, and build up.

Minimum Standards Ultimately, it is you who sets the standards in your life for how you would like to live and how you would like to design your life. Don’t shrink to meet others lower standards, whether they be of themselves or for you. Don’t divulge in limits set on you by anyone: society, family, friends, government, media or anyone who attempts to strip you of your authentic spirit. Set your own standards and abide by them. The only limit you have is the one you agree upon with yourself in your heart and mind. Create your standards however you’d like, just make sure it’s a standard you truly believe in.

SECTION 1.03

Makings of You In essence, we are all amalgams of things we’ve encountered in our lives; our friends, families, environments, and experiences all play a part in molding our current character. The key moving forward is to consciously filter new experiences and influences that come into your life so that they may add to your overall positive construction. Be selective about what you let into the makings of you; what you read, what you watch, what you eat, who you surround yourself with, and all other thoughts you entertain and influences that you come in contact with. Inevitably they will either shape and mold your life and your character in the negative or the positive, the choice is truly up to you.

SECTION 1: FOUNDATIONS

SECTION 1.04

Life Size The size of your life can be equated by how much you put into it: experiences, work, family, friends and the amount of time and energy you put into each of these categories. The choice is yours; utilize healthy positive material or negative debilitating material. There is an abundance of both and you will inevitably find what you’re looking for. Your goal should be to pack in as much of the good stuff as you can. The more good stuff you put in, the more good you’ll get back; building strong relationships, putting in meaningful work, engaging in stimulating and fruitful experiences for the mind and soul will all pay there dividends back. It’s a simple law of input/output returns, and it works both ways. Decide what you want to focus on, beginning bringing that into your life and watch it grow.

SECTION 1.05

Templated Life From a young age we are taught to live a templatized life; a framework of a prepackaged standard way of living which usually involves; college, work, house, marriage, and retirement in some manner. This basic template gets instilled in us throughout our lives and is sold to us as a more proper or appropriate way to live. Maybe that standard template or someone else’s works for you, maybe it doesn’t. The most important part is to decide for yourself. It would be wise to consider challenging these templated concepts, or anything handed to you that claims absolute truth of a thought or direction. Challenging these things will help you think for yourself and decide where you really want to go and who you’d like to be, because at some point, you will have to decide the answers to those questions. Whether you choose the template or your own custom design, the choice is completely up to you. 22

SECTION 1.06

Color How you color in the work which is your life is a matter of your thinking and self expression. You may use dull muddy hues that suck the energy out of you, composing a lackluster portrait, or you may adopt a bright, vibrant palette that fills your soul. Whichever you choose, keep in mind that the colors you use to fill in your life (your thoughts and actions) will ultimately determine where you go. Along your way, many outsiders may try to convince you of what colors you are to create with, trying to decide the palette for you. Don’t let anyone dull your colors; your fullest expression of you. Many will try, friends, family colleagues, infectious environments and others. Though certain direction may be taken from outside influence, the ultimate decision of how you color in your life should be determined by you.

SECTION 2.01

Solidity Shit happens (see corresponding charts), so maintaining a frame of solidity under pressure is crucial to getting anywhere worth going. Many times, you will have little to no control of outside chaos and circumstances; what people think of you, world events, your upbringing etc. But you do have control over yourself, how you think, and how you work within difficult situations. Developing a sense of solidity of mind and self will help you out of these hard times. The importance of this shouldn’t be overlooked because such is life, shit will happen. It is how you handle it that really matters. Learn to handle more shit instead of ducking away from it, because a hard reality of life is that the shit you need to handle never ends and will keep popping up in various challenges and obstacles in life. Better the strength to handle it than weakness and retreat.

SECTION 2: FRAMEWORK

SECTION 2.02

Structure Some formal structure in your life is good and absolutely necessary to keep you on the right course. The trick is to not be too restrictive. Give yourself enough room for maneuverability but tight enough that you don’t jump from one item to another all of the time and you keep yourself on track to get shit done. This idea of structure should trickle into everything in your life from your job, your passions and other goals you may have that are going to require structural direction. Without structure, your life and things in it take on shapes and forms of their own that you never agreed upon. The result will be a sense of aimlessless and lack of organization in your life. Structure exists for a reason, use it. Form one that works for you and stick to it and things will begin to fall into place.

30

31

SECTION 2: FRAMEWORK

SECTION 2.03

Habits What you do on a daily basis and every small thing in between shape the entirety of you and your life. Those minuscule habits matter too, all the way down to making your bed, hygiene maintenance and putting things away. Show me a disorganized room and I’ll show you a disorganized person and life. Building strong, positive habits is essential on your journey as these little details cascade across more parts of your life than you’d think. Good habits generally compound on one another and negatives do just the opposite. Take account of what you do on a daily basis and aim to knock out and/or replace any negative habit you have. Overtime, these new positive habits will compound on another, and you will be in a much better place. Get going.

SECTION 2: FRAMEWORK

SECTION 2.04

Tech Reduction The detrimental effects from technological are becoming more and more apparent in our modern world. From the endless applications and products to choose from, to the overwhelming amount of hyper-connectvity, stimulation, choices, and access to information (good and bad). We are simply bombarded with too much shit that isn’t good for us. We are meant and designed to live life out there; outside in the world, not through a glowing rectangular screen. Heed this advice; if you work in an office, play too much on your glowing rectangle or anywhere in between; lay off the technology and devices and get outside. Get active, go for a walk, hike, hit the beach, box with your friends in the front yard, whatever you have to do to take a healthy natural break from the technological bombardment. Your mental health and your creative capacities will thank you later.

SECTION 2: FRAMEWORK

SECTION 2.05

Write Things Down The pen is mightier than the sword, and writing things down has the tendency to keep you sharp. It will help you remember ideas you may have had or certain tasks you need to accomplish. And the kinesthetic movement from the activity of writing helps your mind retain more information. The habit of writing things down also saves all of those fleeting ideas you had and never saved, and it also keeps you a bit more organized. Writing is also an excellent outlet for personal self-reflection. The more you write, the more you can potentially reveal of yourself. This uncovering can act as a guide to help you align better with your goals and where you want to go. You don’t need to make a career out of it. But write things down to keep yourself in line. Get the pencil sharpener.

36

37

SECTION 2: FRAMEWORK

SECTION 2.06

Body & Mind Fuel What you put into your body is what you get out. That includes physical consumption just as much as mental and emotional consumption. Good foods give you good energy which in turn delivers good focus and makes you feel good. Likewise, digesting positive fuel in the form of books, ideas, thoughts will have the same positive effect. Contrast this with to bad foods which rob you of energy and focus and can make you lethargic, and bad thoughts and materials ingested that rot your body and mind. The fuel you use is an investment for your body and your mind. Take account of what you are digesting on a daily basis. Begin eliminating all fuel that is low quality and draining and replace it with high quality stuff that helps you think and operate better. Fill up wisely.

SECTION 3.01

Be Yourself The world and a lot of people that you will bump into will try to neuter your individuality by trying to cut out all of the things that make you uniquely you. Don’t square yourself up to fit into a mold or take to everything others tell you, whether that be friends, family, the media, or any other outlet of information. Some have good intentions, many do not. The standard mold or adopting someone else’s may not be right for you. We are all individuals and that is where our true power and potential lay. Our strongest capacities lie in our personal creation as opposed to trying to emulate everyone else. Put in the effort to be a more refined version of you, living to your fullest expression, whatever they may be to you. A large part of you already knows this, you just need to start acting on it.

42

FOUNDATIONS: BASIC GUIDELINES FOR A BETTER YOU

43

SECTION 3: VALUES

SECTION 3.02

Looking Up A combination of optimism and overall open mindedness to new ideas is a key to progress and success. Minds closed off to learning and betterment will never succeed in growing or alleviating even the most common of mental hindrances. Along the same thread, lack of a strong positive disposition toward life and your endeavors will inevitably lead to negative, undesired outcomes. The old adage “look on the bright side” is evermore true here. When things aren’t going well, it is easy to fall into negative thinking. Audit your thoughts for one week straight, noting all of the times you’ve thought negatively, and work to remove them. At this time it is even more important to stay optimistic. Train your mind and thoughts on this route; continuously think great, positive, strong, thoughts, and those results will play out in your life sooner or later.

44

FOUNDATIONS: BASIC GUIDELINES FOR A BETTER YOU

45

SECTION 3: VALUES

SECTION 3.03

Mental Strength There is a lot to be said about developing a strong mind. The benefits are endless; stronger focus, more discipline, better character, high resilience and the list goes on. Learning to handle more of the hard stuff life inevitably hits you with is a skill that should not be overlooked. Because inevitably, you will have to deal with something difficult in your life and you will either rise to the occasion or flounder under the pressure. One of the best ways to do this is slowly tackle more responsibility or take on new things. The more you take on and can handle the easier is gets, all the while toughening your mental leather and resolve. Train your mind to grow in the direction of strength and keep going, soon you’ll be wherever you decided to go, and be able to handle whatever gets thrown at you. Bob and weave.

SECTION 3.04

Your Community Who you associate with, who you hang out with, and who you spend the most time with, you will inevitably become. You should strive to hang out with people who help you grow or help you rejuvenate. Spend time with people who have good energy and good attitudes. Like cheap paint, they will rub off on you. This counts for friends, family and even co-workers. Keep a solid tribe, especially for when things get tough, you’ll be glad you did.

SECTION 3.05

Perspective The way that you look at and perceive things in life will inevitably determine your reality and your actions. Similar to cropping a photo, we only see the selected part of the photograph we choose to put into focus, or what is put in focus for us to see. We do the same thing with experiences and beliefs that we hold onto in our lives. Instill a positive perspective and your results will reflect this. Instill a negative one, and the same holds true. It is incredible how powerful this sentiment is. Change how you look at things and you can literally change you life. Ultimately, you are the alchemist of your own perspective and which ways you want to crop your life. The angle and choice is yours.

SECTION 3: VALUES

SECTION 3.06

Don’t Be A Dick Kindness and simply being a good human being can take you far. People have enough to deal with in life and dealing with more difficult people is only an added burden in the everyday struggle. Look to help people, not inhibit people. Look to make people feel good and welcome, not demeaned and unimportant. Look to help people prosper, and you will prosper along with them. The world gives you back what you put into it. Strive to put forth more positivity and strength in all forms of communication and interactions with your fellow man. Remember again, there are already enough unpleasant people in the world, don’t add to the list, don’t be a dick.

SECTION 4.02

Composition Your composition consists of your life in totality. In design, there are many ways of going about solving a design project. Such is life, there are many ways to go about living. What do you want your composition to consist of? It is advised to live with as much clarity and virtue as one can, but ultimately to what degrees in these areas you wish to reach is up to you. Your composition, your masterpiece, your art, your life is up to you. However you want to design it, however you’d like to live it, you create it with your own hand. At the end of the day you make the final decision. Make the most beautiful composition you can.

SECTION 4: DIRECTION

SECTION 4.03

Your Style Your style is everything that makes you, you; how you dress, your philosophies, how you work, your morals, your ethics and simply your overall way of doing things. Your style is just that; your style, and it should be treated as such. Be authentic, be genuine, be the best, highest version of yourself you can create. There’s no right or wrong style. This is something highly individual. Jimi Hendrix didn’t play guitar the same way Eric Clapton did. He didn’t play like anyone else beside himself, he truly created his own style in every aspect. Try new things, experiment, mix it up, play it your own way, but do it with style.

60

61

SECTION 4: DIRECTION

SECTION 4.04

Vision At some point, you need to solidify a vision for yourself; where you want to go, what kind of person you’d like to be, what you want to do and so forth. This vision will help you set goals and keep you on the straight and narrow. Otherwise, you will end up in a random place, as you don’t care much where you go, like Alice in Wonderland. You may course correct or change once you start heading down a path. But the best starting point is to have a path. Don’t worry if others cannot see or understand your vision, that’s what makes it unique and powerful to you. So form your goals, create a vision and head in that direction. You’ll be sure to meet others from a similar path along the way. We’ll meet you there.

62

63

SECTION 4: DIRECTION

SECTION 4.05

Your Story We all have stories we tell ourselves, what’s yours? Does it help you or inhibit you? Much of our current stories are molded through past events and experiences that happened long ago, many which don’t help us and have no current relevance. Yet, we hold onto them for familiarity. If you want to turn it around, you’ll have to change any negative narrative you play in your mind. This is done by how you go about talking to and about yourself. This isn’t limited to any particular case, you always need to have your mind and thoughts working for you in a positive manner. Through repetition and work, you can flip your thinking around for the better. Author your own story full of strong and resolute thoughts. Your reward will be strength of mind and character, and a better story.

64

FOUNDATIONS: BASIC GUIDELINES FOR A BETTER YOU

65

SECTION 4: DIRECTION

SECTION 4.06

Live At Your Edge This means to live just a bit beyond your natural capabilities or “your comfort zone”. This is the only place where growth lies. If you do the same thing over and over again, that isn’t your edge, that is one step above relaxation, and nothing really happens in this area of ordinary comfort. Not to say relaxation is not allowed, but to progress in areas where you would like, you will inevitably need to push the limits of what is comfortable for you. This edge is different for everyone and once you begin pushing it, your edge shifts over a bit more. That is called growth, when the foreign becomes the familiar. The goal is to find your edge, walk to it, and start doing things right on that cusp of creation.

CLOSING

Parting Words There is a repeating theme throughout this particular work that is written in different ways over and over to drive home a point. If you haven’t picked up on the repeating theme throughout this book, here it is; the choice is yours. Everyday you make choices. You choose go to work or stay home, you choose to stay clean and organized or messy and disheveled, you choose to drink or stay in, You choose to spend money or save, you choose to workout or lay on the couch. Everything you do every single day is a choice you make. You may think some are an absolute necessity but, not really. You don’t have to go to work, you will just likely lose your job and have to find another way to survive if you choose not to. You don’t have to brush your teeth, you may just develop cavities and eventually 01

FOUNDATIONS: BASIC GUIDELINES FOR A BETTER YOU

have your teeth rot out. You don’t have to strive for anything more out of your life, if you’re comfortable or truly satisfied with where you are then that is perfectly fine, keep rolling in that direction. It is not to be said to quit your job or anything extreme, the point being made here is that all of the advice and tips in this work can help you, only if you make the conscious choice to implement them. Much like any other piece of knowledge or advice, it is only as good as the student and their will to implement said knowledge or advice. Nothing can be forced out of an individual if they don’t want it. You can either take what is here or leave it. Either option is fine, and both options are yours to choose from. Nobody can ever force you to do anything, to be better, to dissolve all of your bullshit, to truly grow into a better, more refined you. 02
