From The Editors...

As you are reading this, the Class of 2018 is less than a week away from graduation. We wanted to congratulate our fellow classmates on their accomplishments and wish them so, so much luck in the future. These last four years of high school have been so amazing, and we have been so fortunate to get to know some amazing people through journalism. To start, we would like to thank the teachers in the English and History wing for putting up with us constantly coming in their rooms in the morning for various things— scissors and tape being the most needed. However, special thanks are in order to our journalism adviser, Mrs. Cahoon (but if you ever see us yelling her name it is typically Sagaser). Thank you, Sagaser, for your unconditional support even when we were curious General Reporters who asked millions of questions. Thank you for teaching us to always look for the truth behind all the fake stories. Thank you for always seeing the good in us even Brenna Hammer and Shantel Jangula, Co-Editors-In-Chief though we made the lab messy and did not take our Christmas decorations in the lab down until February. Next, we would like to thank the entire community for supporting our paper. The good words on our articles and design mean the world to us—as we have made The Courier a completely different paper (both physically and in content). We have been so honored to be able to run this paper together. We will truly miss everything about writing for the Courier. This issue is dedicated to the senior class who we have spent our last seven years with. On pages 13-25 our seniors give their last few words.

SCAVENGER HUNT: We hid an illustrated otter, a Courier staff favorite, in our paper! Try to find it, be the

first to show it to Mrs. Cahoon (Room 221) and win a prize! We’ll also give you a shoutout on our Instagram page!

SENIORITIS

still a high school student and your current classes need to be of utmost importance. On top of all of this, you have to understand that no matter where you are, somebody will ask you what you are going to do with your life. For example, I was at the dentist and as they were digging in the back of my mouth, they asked what I am going to do next year. First of all, I can not talk to you when you have a sharp, pointy, hook stabbing me in the gum. Second of all, please do not ask me that because every time you do, I have a little panic attack. Why is this so stressful, you may be wondering. Here is the deal. Even though choosing your classes and having complete control about what you want to do is really, really cool, it is also terrifying. The upside is that no one is telling you what to do anymore but the downside is that no one is telling you what to do anymore. It is like going from high school, where they hold your hand as you walk from one required class to the next, to the real world where they tell you to figure it out on your own and try not to get lost on the way. The worst thing about senioritis, though, is that after four long years of complaining, you finally realize how much high school does not actually suck. You will probably never admit it because you definitely do not want your teachers to know that they were right about high school being fun, but deep down you know you are going to miss it. Every football game, every pep rally, every time you used “teamwork” on an assignment you should not have is all coming to an end. The friends that you swore you would be besties with until the end are suddenly moving away and you start to freak out because you know that next year, you are back at the bottom of the food chain. And it is all happening so fast. And you want it to stop. But that is just the way it goes when you have senioritis. You are happy and sad and angry and confused and you just want it all to stop so you can go back to being that sophomore talking about how bad you want to graduate and how stupid the seniors are because they think they are better than everyone else. But you cannot do that. And it sucks. Anyways, here is to the class of 2018 for putting up with every policy change, every ipad update, every apocalypselevel wifi crash. We have almost reached the end, and hopefully that diploma will be the cure to the senioritis that is slowly making us waste away. It has been an honor and a privilege writing for you all for the past three years and I will truly miss every sassy poll response and article request. Thanks for being real. Love, Brenna.

The one thing about me that is not a secret is that I am a trainwreck. I am always, and I mean always, either sick or injured. I have had ten surgeries and when my friends have a mystery illness, they come to me, Dr. Brenna, asking what is wrong with them because chances are good I have had it. I can honestly say, though, that when I break down my medical charts and look through every surgery, illness, and injury, the worst one to overcome has been senioritis. Senioritis, though it cannot be diagnosed by a medical professional, is a very real thing. Symptoms include constant exhaustion, complete lack of motivation, hysterical laughing at every failed test, and perpetual angst. Common ways to ease these symptoms include wearing sweatpants, not putting on makeup or doing your hair, and looking through Pinterest when you should be listening to lecture. I can also assure you that seniors are the only ones truly affected. I love hearing underclassmen joke about how they already have senioritis. Listen, it is okay. I did it, too. I thought that when I was a sophomore and wanted to graduate, I had senioritis. I did not, and I promise that if you are not a senior, you do not truly understand the pain. But you will. See, true senioritis kicks in when you realize that you literally have nothing to work for anymore. Chances are good that you already have enough credits to graduate, so if you fail your anatomy test, you will still get a diploma. You have already been accepted into the school you want to go to, you have already taken the ACT enough times to realize your score is not improving, and you have wracked up about as much scholarship money as you are going to get. This is when you enter the phase of waiting. You are literally just waiting to graduate so you can do something with all of that useful information about plants and commas that you learned for the past 12 years or so. This is why seniors who have been infected with senioritis seem so bored and angry all the time. Because they are bored and angry all the time. However, while you are sitting around, waiting, this big mean guy known as “life” will come kick you in the back of the head and remind you that even though you have nothing to do, you have so much you should be doing. First, you have to plan a graduation party. And while graduation parties are really fun to go to, I promise they are not nearly as much fun to plan. It is also probably time to start registering for classes for your freshman year in college, finding dorm roommates, taking out loans, and probably finding a job. Do not forget, though, that you are

OWEN PIEHL

News / Sports Editor As this year comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for reading both this piece and the Courier this past year. With Brenna and Shantel leaving, this paper is on me and our very experienced staff to carry on. Thank you for being the reason we can continue to make these. If you feel strongly about this issue or others, please feel free to get in touch with either me or The Courier. You can email me at owen.piehl@msd1.org, or drop off a letter to us in Mrs. Cahoon’s room 221. My first day of high school, freshman year. My dad dropped me off at the park just up the hill from the high school because I was early for the day and I wanted to walk and think about the fact that I was a high schooler now. I never really thought about how quickly my elementary and middle school days would be over, and I was scared of the future but excited for all the new things here. I started to learn things, but most of them did not come from class. Do not park in the bottom lot until you are an upperclassman. Do not run to lunch. Do not walk too slow in the hallways. Kiss up to your teachers, especially English teachers, and your grades will benefit. Dress nice, or at least do not wear sweatpants every day. Freshman year is a time to find your group for high school, and to not be afraid to go out and meet new people, try new things. Seniors are not as mean as everyone says they are, and freshpacks are a real thing. Do not break your back. Freshman year is the time when you start to join things (please do join things) and decide what you want to make of your time in high school. Also one more small piece of advice: those grades you let drop freshman year are going to haunt you until the day you graduate. Sophomore year I walked into school the first day on a pair of crutches (my foot betrayed me), and I thought about

Guys’ Summer Fashion RILEY GRIFFIN General Reporter

Tips to keep you looking cool and collected during the summertime

There will be times when you need to look professional. Whether this is a wedding or going over to that nice girls house to meet her parents, a quality watch will be in order. You will not want to check the time on your phone, as this makes you seem immature. A watch does not have to be very expensive to be quality. There are plenty of watches on websites that offer great quality at a high schooler’s budget.

Along to go with the watch at your formal event, you will need a nice dress shirt. Many guys do not like the feel of a normal dress shirt, as it is uncomfortable for them. A good alternative is a dress shirt in the stretchy, spandex material found in many athletics shirts. Also, it is summer, so you can go with brighter colors like pinks and yellows. Make sure to not go too bright though, as they will make you stand out in the wrong way.

It is not 2004 anymore, cargo shorts are out. These make you look lanky and your legs look like sticks. Basketball shorts are not a good alternative either as they make you look lazy and unprofessional. The better choice are a pair of at the knee or above the knee dress shorts. These offer you a well fitted look and can be found in a variety of fun summer colors. Stores like Target offer great options at affordable prices. A cool accessory to have year round, especially in the summer, is a good belt. A brown leather or canvas belt helps keep your pants from sagging and keeps a mature, fitted look. There are plenty of good belts around, whether it is at the mall or ordering one online. These are super cheap too, as you really do not need to spend more than $30 on a belt.

A basic tee shirt is your building block for summer. These offer a clean cut look to yourself that will be sure to impress the people around you. H&M offers a variety of colors and cuts that are sure to give you whatever you need. Classic cuts and your main colors of white, black, navy and tan are your best options. A bright color can be thrown in the rotation occasionally as well to spice things up.

Another key to looking good in the summer is a good pair of sunglasses. These not only keep the sun out of your eyes, but it helps you to look cool and makes people want to get to know you more. Make sure that they fit your face too. To find a good pair that fit your face, you should go with opposites of your face shape. For example, if you have a rounder face, go with more structured frames to help add definition.

It might just be me, but I am quite tired of seeing the same Nike running sneakers on every single guy in the summer. These make you look like everyone else and do not let you stand out. A good pair of white canvas sneakers are a perfect staple. They provide a nice simplicity and a clean look to you that makes you look like you care. A downside to these although, are that they need to be kept clean throughout the summer.

Recreational marijuana is a drug that is illegal in all of the United States except for nine states and the District of Columbia. Marijuana can be used in a variety of ways whether it be for recreational use or as to treat a number of medical conditions. Many people have many questions about marijuana being used as for a medical purpose in North Dakota while many wait for it to be passed. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has not yet been passed by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a medicine. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “the term medical marijuana refers to using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions.” Medical marijuana can be confused with recreational marijuana. The levels of the plant vary in different materials depending on what kind of treatment a patient has to undergo. “Under the [North Dakota Medical Marijuana] program, the acquisition, use and possession of usable marijuana to treat or alleviate a qualifying patient’s debilitating medical condition is allowed by the state [as long as all requirements of the program are complied with],” said North Dakota Director of the Division of Medical Marijuana Jason Wahl. There are many different types of conditions that can benefit from the use of medical marijuana. “Examples [of medical conditions] include cancer, positive status for HIV, PTSD, agitation of Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia and other medical conditions,” Wahl said. “State law identifies what is included in the definition of debilitating medical condition.” According to doctors, with every drug there are advantages and disadvantages. Due to the rising conflicts that medical marijuana has caused, many experts focus on the advantages. “Cannabis is becoming increasingly understood that it is a very interesting and versatile medicine with much less toxicity than some of the pharmaceutical products it replaces,” Harvard Professor Dr. Lester Grinspoon said. One of the first questions patients ask is if the plant is healthy for your body. Expert doctors have done research to find out.

This year’s graduating class has truly learned a lot. From mitochondria to conjugating verbs to the pythagorian theorem, the class of 2018 is equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed in their future endeavors (or so we hope). However, perhaps the biggest lesson learned is how much can change in four short years. From policy changes within the school, to tragedy, to internet memes and the expansion of the Kardashian family, this timeline, spanning from page 18 to page 26, shows just how much these seniors have been through in their four years at MHS. Is a hot dog a sandwich? KENNA HEIDT General Reporter

At the end of the school year, students tend to get distracted. Most of us are ready for summer, and would do anything to get a different subject to talk about during class. The controversy that is going around our school, and many others, is if hot dogs are considered sandwiches. According to the dictionary, it is considered a sandwich, but according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, it is not a sandwich.

OUT OF 154 STUDENTS...

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of a sandwich is, “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between” or “one slice of bread covered with food.” Presuming you serve the hot dog on a bun, it meets the requirements of being a sandwich by being a filler inside bread, which I would consider as the purest form of a sandwich. Although there should be no argument that a hot dog is a sandwich, there are many. Some may argue that a hot dog is not a sandwich because when it is served upon a bun it is only one piece of bread that is cut to hold the hot dog rather than two pieces of bread like most sandwiches are made from. At this point even if the bread is not cut completely through you can still say that the hot dog is presumably “sandwiched” between the bread. Although it may be served upon a hinged bun another classic sandwich, the Italian Hero, is also served upon a hinged bun but that does not make it any less of a sandwich than any other considerable sandwich. Many also argue that it is not a sandwich because it clearly does not have the word “sandwich” in its name. This argument is also irrelevant for the fact that many sandwiches would not be sandwiches because they clearly do not have the word “sandwich” in the name. Some of these sandwiches would include BLT, Philly Cheesesteak, Hamburger, gyro, Reuben, Muffuletta, Patty Melt, and more. After reading my argument and looking at the examples I used to persuade you, I hope you can add a hot dog as a sandwich to your changing terminologies.

Senior

May 2018

Some might agree that they like hot dogs, some might say they are vulgar but regardless of personal opinion the fact stands that a hotdog is not a sandwich. The reason I argue it’s not a sandwich is the structure of the bun itself. In order to be a sandwich you must be able to cover each piece of bread independently and then clasp them together. The simple fact is that a hotdog bun is packaged as one piece of bread with a lateral slit along the middle, which is not two separate pieces. I will agree that if one were to compromise the anatomy of a bun and tear it into two pieces, it qualifies as a sandwich. The NHDSC (National Hot Dog and Sausage Council) weighed in on the conflict and classified the hotdog as “a class of its own,” agreeing that it is not to be identified as a sandwich. The council also concluded that as time goes on the terminology we use changes. The question of open or closed face sandwich has a simple answer. Neither. According to the USDA regulatory definitions, an open faced sandwich as “consisting of two or more slices of bread or the top and bottom sections of a severed bun that encloses meat or poultry, and are not amenable to the federal meat and poultry inspection laws when distributed in interstate commerce.” An open face sandwich “must contain at least 50 percent cooked meat. Product must show a true product name, e.g.,— sliced roast beef on bread.” The hotdog just doesn’t fall into either of these categories because although it is partially enclosed by bread, it is a single piece of bread. Even though a hotdog is NOT in fact a sandwich, we can all agree that they are pretty neat.

College Life Mandan graduates and college freshmen discuss college life COURTNEY ENTZI General Reporter

From what is seen on television, college can appear to many students to be one big, crazy party with no rules and lots of stress, but there is a lot more to it. “It is so much more. I have become a whole new person here. I have gained the confidence to do anything,” college freshman and Mandan high school graduate Samantha Power said. “I just can’t even express how great my experience has been. College may not be for everyone, but just give it a try. The key is to participate— you get out what you put in” A big fear of every high school grad is leaving friends, parents, and home behind. “I don’t get homesick, I just get tired of the same routine.” college freshman and Mandan High graduate Maiah McCowan, “In high school my weeks varied a little bit, in college for an entire semester it is pretty much the same. And I miss my dog all the time.” Best friends are one of the most important things in a young adult’s life. Although the friends you have in high school may seem like your lifelong friends, it does not always work out that way. “There are a select few, maybe three, people I stay in touch with and talk to every single day. There are others that I message every once in a while, and then there are the majority that I don’t have any contact with,” Power said. “Once you’re in college, you realize that high school relationships may have helped you grow and become the person you are, but many of them stay in high school, and that’s okay. It doesn’t diminish the friendships and relationships; it just means that you’re growing up and taking on new adventures.” Do not stress too much, though. College is a great time to meet a ton of new, great people. “At first, it was really hard to make new friends. Finding people with similar interests is also hard if you do not like talking to strangers,” college freshman and Mandan high school graduate Connor Weiland said. “It took me a while to adjust to talking to people more, but I ended up making a couple of really close friends who I adore. It is not about the amount of friends for me, it is the quality.” One great way to make new friends is by meeting people in the

dorm rooms. “You are constantly around people and involved in activities. It’s never boring in our dorms! Plus, if you’re looking for another easy way to make friends, try a semester in the dorms,” Power said. A downside of dorms is having to share such a small space with so many people. Especially if the dorm’s bathroom is communal. “My building is the athletic building, so it gets pretty rowdy, but not anything too hard to handle. One thing I do dislike, however, is the community bathrooms,” Weiland said. “Guys are really nasty and filthy a lot of the time, so the bathroom is the first thing to get trashed usually, which kind of is inconvenient and gross.” A lot of college students save money by getting meal plan through the school. While this may save a lot of money, some might wonder if the food is as haunting as high school lunches. “All I have to say about the food is that it is 100% better. Our cafeteria provides many options every day, so no matter what you’re in the mood for, you can find something.” Power said. Another worry of a lot of new college freshman is the stress of homework in college. “Homework can be a lot of work and slightly overwhelming, but it all balances out,” McCowan said. “For some classes there is daily homework and others you get homework once the entire semester, it all depends. Generally the homework is longer and slightly more difficult than in high school.” One thing that is a huge part of college homework is papers. “I have written about fifteen papers this year, which is more than I ever wrote in high school,” Weiland said. The college freshmen stressed the importance of taking the right high school classes to provide the skills you will need to get through homework. One of these classes was speech. “Mrs. Saur’s speech class. The best, but most challenging class I ever took at MHS. Do not avoid taking the class; it will make a huge difference when you get to college,” McCowan said. The college transition can be a stressful time for many students but asking for advice and staying calm will help create an amazing college experience. “If you are worried about what to bring or not bring, reach out to the school,” Power said. “They will be happy to help or even have a student contact you. Don’t be scared! This will honestly be the best time of your life.”

Advice From A College Freshman

“Do not procrastinate! It will bite you in the butt over and over again, especially if the workload keeps on getting harder. Also, be optimistic about college. Your grades will not be perfect like in high school, but sometimes stress gets to you and that is okay. Find time to spend on yourself and take time to breathe.”

Samantha Power “College has taught me so much about myself; I feel like a completely different person! However, the most important piece of advice I can give is this: Go on the adventure. Take the risk. Step out of your comfort zone. Now is the time for you to figure out who you really are and who you want to be. Do not be afraid to try new things or meet new people. This is the adventure of a lifetime. All you have to do is embrace; you won’t regret it.”

Is College Everything it is Cracked Up to Be?

“There are some positives and negatives to college, but overall I like the freedom that comes with college.”

You’re Tired They’re Retired A farewell to the staff who will not come back RYAN PHELPS General Reporter

At the end of the year, every year, there are goodbyes to give. Goodbyes to people that at first were scary and intimidating, and now are a part of the MHS family. These leaving people are, of course, the retiring MHS teachers and staff. Unlike most of our favorite seniors, they might not get the goodbyes they deserve. Speaking of not giving the goodbyes they deserve, head custodian Nick Miller and library aide Paulette Neff both retired earlier this year and could not be contacted. That does not mean they are not worth getting a send off like everyone else!

Popping Pills and Running Hills Over-the-counter pain medication abuse by athletes COURTNEY ENTZI General Reporter

It’s just a couple Tylenol, what’s the worst that can happen? Many injured athletes find themselves taking an excessive amount of medication to get through practice and games with out even knowing what the consequences could be. “They think it’s going to help them and get them ready for a game,” Athletic Trainer Doug Nickels said. Although the little pills themselves may not do too much harm to a person’s body, the athlete can create a bigger problem when taking them. “Taking too many Ibuprofen and Tylenol can cause liver and kidney problems depending on the severity of it, ” Nickels said, “It can slow the healing process, so it is best to take them as needed and let your body do the healing.” Painkillers numb the injury creating less pain on the body. This allows the athlete to continue their athletics with minimal pain. “If you can’t feel the injury, you will play better,” sophomore Josh Moe said. However, this can lead to overworking an injury. “It can make [the injury] worse because you aren’t taking care of it, and you’re just putting it off,” Moe said. When athletes have an injury, too much strain can often make it worse. According to the Stop Your Addiction website (a treatment, counseling and intervention site), this can lead to having to take more and more pills as the injury worsens so that the pain does not increase. This is

called physical dependence. “My injury got worse because I went to practice everyday and overworked it because I was taking medicine,” sophomore Kobe Poitra said. It is possible to become psychologically dependent to them too. If a person takes pills before every game, they may start to feel like they need them to play. Many athletes believe they need to keep playing after an injury, and this is why they continue to abuse medicine and overwork their injury. “I think athletes feel like they need to be at their best and they think if they don’t take medicine and they don’t just push through it, they will let people down,” Poitra said. Taking time and letting you injury heal is important to both your health and a successful recovery. Working an injury too hard can make the pain and seriousness of the injury increase. “If you are injured, get yourself better before you play again,” Poitra said. “It is not worth it to be in pain.”

Bett e r at the Ball park MAGGIE KNOLL General Reporter

Mandan Veterans Memorial Ballpark is getting a renovation beginning this summer. This renovation could bring a new atmosphere to the baseball games that will affect future games. The renovations include dugouts, new seating, grandstand wings, canopy, press box and even synthetic turf. These renovations have potential to bring in new spectators that will watch the game. “The new stadium is going to make a good new atmosphere,” senior Easton Miller said. “It will be an overall better experience at the ballpark.” The ballpark has not received an update since the 1980s. Adding new dugouts, and over 500 seats has the possibility to attract spectators as well as the potential to hold tournaments in the future. “A cleaner facility will hopefully draw more people to the games,” Miller said. Dugouts and added seats are not the only feature that is getting a change, synthetic turf will be replacing the previous grass and dirt that the players are comfortable with. “We are used to grass,” sophomore Blake Arenz said. “We are just going to have to adjust to turf and keep playing baseball.” For many players the idea of synthetic turf is something they are not the biggest fan of. Playing on turf is a different atmosphere than what the players are used to. “I’m not the biggest fan of turf at all,” Miller said. “What’s baseball without dirt and grass stains?” The renovations do not affect only the players, but the coaches and spectators as well. The new seats will provide better viewing and will be added closer to the home plate. “The turf will be a better playing surface that we can play on sooner,” assistant coach Jason Salz said. The baseball team has had an exciting season so far and is going at a strong 9-7 as of May 15 and is ranked third. With the season coming to an end, the team still has a lot to look forward to. “I am looking forward to having fun with my teammates and hopefully making a run in the postseason,” Arenz said. “I’m always having fun with my friends.

Boys’ Track & Field

Track is one of the largest sports when it comes to number of players on a team, so coaches always want as many of their players competing for state and WDA as possible. “Right now we’re looking about eight kids, we’re hoping to get about 15 kids qualified for state. We’re on the way, but we have a little ways to go,” Head Coach Todd Sheldon said. Boys’ track, like many of the other teams, has a seasonal goal. These goals help teams have something to make them perform better and to have them work harder towards what they would like to achieve. Boys track is really running towards their goal for the season. “Our goal at the end of the track season is two fold. One, to have every kid see improvements in all of their events, and two, to have 15 kids qualify for state,” Sheldon said.

Boys’ Baseball

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ Softball

The boys are working very hard this year as they have a 10-8 record so far for the 2018 season. They also have had six total home games and have won half of them. Mandan has three state championships from previous years, the last being in 2015, and they are swinging to get another this year. Regionals for the Braves start on the 24. These games are the games that occur before state and pit the Braves against all of the opposing teams from the western part of the state. Players to watch for are freshman Jaxon Duttenhefer and senior Easton Miller. Duttenhefer is the only freshman on the team and has already gotten himself a home run; meanwhile Miller has gotten the only walkoff for the Braves this season.

Every team wants to make it to state, but many do not get to go. “Our goal is to make it to state. Right now we think we’re about the middle of the pack,” said Coach Megan Hanson. “Hopefully by the end of the year we’ve gotten our experiences under our belts and we have everything put together,” Hanson said. “So that we can find ourselves in one of those top spots.” Rivalries and strong competition are always something teams work towards when playing, and the girls are particularly focused on one team as the season goes on. “Right now, the biggest competition for the past few years, has been Minot,” Hanson said. An outstanding player for the team is freshman Elizabeth Felderman, who has won four of her six singles matches.

The Girls’ softball team has had a hard working start to their season with their minds focused and their bats ready. “The kids really came everyday and got done whatever they needed to get done,” said Coach Ryne Jungling. The team is currently sitting at a total season record of 9-10. Their first game was a loss against the Minot Majettes, and their most recent was also a loss against the Century Patriots. “It’s been a pretty good start to the season when you look at the conditions we had to deal with, like all of the renovations,” Jungling said. Like many teams, the Braves have a major goal to end the season. “Our goal is to, when we host the regional tournament in May, is to be playing for us to get us a chance to play in the state tournament on Saturday,” Jungling said
