Mandan looks for new sports arena

- General Reporter

The city of Mandan may be saying goodbye to Faris Field and the All Seasons Arena in the near future. To replace the old facilities, the Mandan Park District will be planning to build one of the most up to date sport complexes in the state. The new complex, the Mandan Sports Center, may only be a dream at the moment, but with the Mandan City Commission approving a city vote to approve funding, this dream is coming closer to being realized. The vote coming June ninth will include whether or not to fund the proposed $22 million sports complex through an increased sales tax in Mandan. “The $22 million is at what we think is going to be the very high end for the budget of the new complex,” said Marketing Specialist Kelly Churchill. To pay for this massive building project the

Custodians work to prepare school for new year

gabrielle WOLF

- General Reporter

During the summer, the school is always busy. It is filled with custodians who are trying to prepare for a new year. The custodians are at the school from 6:30 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, Monday through Thursday. On Fridays the custodians stay until ten to get their work done. The work done in the school varies. The custodians could be outside picking up garbage or inside cleaning the floors. “We scrub the floors, we scrub out lockers, paint, we clean all the classrooms

and all the carpets are shampooed,” said administrative assistant/summer custodian Kelly Kline. All of the light fixtures get cleaned, and they get debugged. The floors are waxed right before school starts, so they are ready for the new year. The desks get flipped over and the undersides are scraped to get gum off. After, the desks get sanitized and moved into the hallways, so the carpets can be shampooed. The gum gets scraped off of every surface in the school. The walls get washed down, and garbage that is outside gets picked up. Along with the classrooms and hallways

getting cleaned, the gym also gets a makeover. “We clean the gym, we do the bleachers, [we] pull them out and get all the gum and whatnot out of the bleachers,” Kline said. Even though the whole school gets cleaned, it doesn't mean that cleaning all of the rooms is a good time. “The worst room to clean is the welding shop, and the woods,” Kline said. The custodians listen to music to make the time pass more efficiently. Either the rock station 101 or the country station 105.9 is played while the custodians clean. The custodians spend their summer cleaning the school so it is ready to be used again in the fall for the students.

April showers bring May flowers and Mayflowers bring Pilgrims. Pilgrims are not the only thing that the month of May brings, however. Many good byes and new beginnings are sure to accompany them. As the school year comes to an end, so does the amount of time that you will spend with your teachers and peers. Be sure to sharpen your pencils and end this year on point. By now I’m sure that many of you can not wait for summer. Perhaps you are looking forward to sitting in the sun and cracking open a good book this summer and becoming well-red. Maybe you just want to have a summer as great as Humpty Dumpty’s fall. Whatever the case, I for one am dreading all “Pulling of the changes a few strings that are soon to come. on advice As annoying as and saying some classes may Goodbye. be now, you will someday realize that their truly is a point behind decimals. Or maybe that all of your infractions in math class really did add up. You may feel as though geometry class has you running in circles or that chemistry just isn’t your element, but those classes will pay off in the long run. Perhaps history class feels like a bunch of old news, but if you don’t pay attention you’ll never make it into those books. If you feel as though you’ve mastered math, stand back and eat a slice of humble Pi. Perhaps English isn’t your strongest class, but slacking will surely not teach you that double negatives are indeed a no-no. Hopefully English will teach you fun skills like how to write like a backwards poet, inverse. Maybe you are infatuated with the idea of traveling. Pay attention in your social studies classes, because the globe means

the world to those teachers. Perhaps you have found yourself praying for a sine from above while taking one of Mr. Gustafson’s trigonometry tests, but if you stay on task and don’t go off on a tangent, you will surely succeed. Teachers’ hands are usually chalk-full of last minute assignments this time of year, and many seniors already have a full blown case of senioritis. The best advice I can give is to stay on task. These classes will prepare you for careers you might not be able to even dream about. Is your summer mowing job not cutting it? Maybe you should’ve appreciated your classes a bit more and you could have gotten some cents talked into you. Parting with these classes will be like parting with Rice Bowl when I move to college, sweet ‘n sour sorrow for some. But for others, they cannot wait to leave good ole’ Mandan High. As I prepare for graduation, there are a few pieces of advice that I feel I must share as I write this final punny article. Chemistry taught me to never trust atoms, they make up everything. I would make another chemistry pun, but all of the good ones argon. If you are a negatron, transform yourself into an optimist prime, they are way more fun to be around. Losing track of your contact lenses gets annoying, so keep an eye on them. When it comes to food, take and bake pizzas are just as good as Dominos, and they’ll save you a lot of dough. Never leave alphabet soup on the stove, it could spell out disaster. If you run in front of a car, you’ll get tired, but if you run in back of a car, you’ll get exhausted. My final advice is as simple as this; never go seven days without a pun, it makes one weak.

Diversity rally shows diverse talents gabrielle WOLF

- General Reporter Singing, reciting poetry and playing an instrument don’t commonly happen outside of the G-wing or an English room, but during the Diversity Rally the whole school gets to see these students talents. The Diversity Rally is hosted by the Leadership Group. Anyone who wants to can participate in the rally if they sign up. This year, the Diversity Rally was hosted by sophomores Kaylin Tomac and Luke Peterson. Tomac and Peterson said some jokes to pass the time while the acts were being set up.

Some acts included freshman Emily Cicha and sophomore Johan Stenslie, with Stenslie playing banjo and Cicha singing and playing the ukulele. Junior Erik Velasquez performed an original poem called “The Elephant Man.” The jazz band performed “Iron Chef Big Band” which featured sophomore Trevor Murphy and Junior Tate Russell. During the course of the song, Murphy and Russell battled each other. Sophomore Jen Hilde was a returning performer this year. She sang to “Dear Future Husband” by Meghan Trainor while sophomore MaKayla Burkhardt and freshman Amber Triptow danced. The guitar class taught by Keri Hess-Bolte,

played “Invisible” by Hunter Hayes, while Administrative Assistant/Music Angela Kutzer sang. The Diversity Rally also featured Paige Michal who returned for another performance. After figuring out some technical difficulties, Michal performed a glow-in-the-dark hula-hoop routine for the school. The Diversity Rally featured many acts, other than those mentioned here. This Diversity Rally featured much talent, and it shows that MHS is truly diverse.

It is important for a student to feel like they can approach their teacher when they are struggling. Sometimes, a little extra help can make a world of difference in a student’s grade. Mr. Cahoon, the Latin teacher, exemplifies this by being available for questions and additional assistance both before and after school. He enjoys seeing students succeed, and does everything he can to ensure that happens. • They are enthusiastic. This one is pretty selfexplanatory. It is hard to expect students to be excited about what they are learning if their teacher looks like they’d rather be getting a cavity filled than teaching the lesson. Mr. Coyle, a biology and human anatomy teacher loves science, and it shows in his lessons. I am never bored in biology because Mr. Coyle is never boring. It’s as simple as that. He has a passion for his career, and it shows.

A student’s insight into the art of teaching

micayla BITZ

- General Reporter Four years, 36 months, 700 days, 4,900 hours: no matter how you count the time you’ll spend in high school, it adds up. I still have two years left to go, and if there is one thing that I know can get me through, it is having good teachers to guide me along. Teachers are among the few people who have the opportunity to make a positive and long-lasting impact on a student’s life. In a 2010 survey conducted by the National Center for Education Information, 88 percent of respondents reported having a teacher who had a “significant, positive impact” in their lives. So, what is the correlation between those teachers who left a positive impact on student lives? I believe there are three qualities that all impactful teachers posses. • They are accessible.

They form a professional relationship with their students Students should feel welcomed and wanted in the classroom. Ms. Mees, a current issues and geography teacher, is great at this. I was having an awful day, and without saying anything about it, she noticed. She kept me after class, gave me a Smarties and told me that no matter what is going on, she knows that I can get through it. That small gesture improved not only my day, but my entire school year. All in all, teachers come in different shapes, sizes and styles, but each one has an approach to teaching that makes them great. These are just a few examples of teachers who have stood out during my short stay at Mandan High, and I know I will meet more in the years to come. We are very blessed to be surrounded by such passionate teachers, and I hope none of you ever take that for granted.

New journalism law protects freedom of speech kaelan REEDY

- General Reporter

A new law aims to protect freedom of speech for Journalism students in North Dakota. This freedom was hindered in the past by the Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier case. The John Wall New Voices Act, signed in on April 6, will provide Journalism students and teachers with protection from censorship, and in the latter’s case, even being fired. In the past, student-created newspaper articles could be vetoed by the principal of a public school. While the decision could be challenged, going to court could be necessary, and the teacher’s job would be at risk, even if the article in question wasn’t inherently bad. “I try to step lightly,” said journalism teacher Hannah Sagaser. “I would never encourage “witch hunts”, or anything like that.” The Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, which took place during 1987-

1988, formed out of an argument between a school newspaper and their principal, who wanted two articles to be omitted from their paper. The Supreme Court ruled that educators could censor school-sponsored material, provided their reasons are related to “legitimate [educational] concerns.” The ruling created a divide between student journalists and educators, who in many cases have a large amount of power over the words students may publish. Fortunately, at Mandan High School, there have not been many problems between the administration and the newspaper staff. “We have generally bowed to the

administration’s changes in the past, realizing that maybe they were in bad taste or that the fight wasn’t necessarily winnable for us, or maybe the situation didn’t warrant it at the time,” Sagaser said. “I know that, with the prior review, we have to be a bit more careful with the things that we report on, and I think sensitivity is necessary.” This act currently only affects North Dakota journalists, protecting high school and public college students. If successful, similar laws may spread throughout the states. “In certain situations, [journalism students] may be told that they’re just kids, that they’re not doing real journalism, and what they do in a high school newspaper doesn’t matter,” Sagaser said. “I hope with this act that will change. It will encourage them to put value in their voice, and realize that it does have an impact.” Photo by Jade Charbonneaux

The story of a wonderful teacher

- Feature Editor Jeanne House, also known to many Mandan High School students as Señora House, is one of the longest serving teachers out there. She is well known to many students as being fun, energetic, charismatic and among other things un poco loca. House followed her passion throughout high school and college and went into the career she always wanted. “I come from a family of teachers - my dad, my brother, my sister-in-law, two nieces and a daughter,” House said. She attended Concordia College and also studied at University of Madrid and at Mangold Institute in Madrid, both in Spain, for her teaching degree. Eventually House ended up here in Mandan, ND and she has taught here since 1972. She was a full-time teacher here at MHS for 32 years teaching Spanish I - Spanish IV.

From teachers to seniors

Lets face it. Seniors can be lost on what to do in their life after high school; some plan to go to college and others are going straight to work, but what’s going to happen after that? that’s usually over looked and it’s a good idea to ask someone who’s been around the block once or twice. “It’s a great idea to go straight to college and that comes with a lot of benefits,” said principal Mark Andresen. “But some professions don’t need a college degree before you start work there… and some places may pay you to go to college that will help students that know that they want to do this job for the next 30 years.” It’s also very important to know exactly how much debt and stress you’re taking on by going to college, and it’s not a good idea to walk into that nightmare without a plan. “Having to deal with harder classes, and

Mandan teachers share their history

- General Reporter High school can be a place many students look forward to surpassing, but for some they just keep coming back. Several students who have gone to Mandan eventually came back to their old high school to teach the students they once were. The few teachers who returned can give an insight into how Mandan has changed over the years. These teachers have seen Mandan in different times and can compare it to now. “If I was going to teach, I knew it was going to be in Mandan. I’ve always been a Mandan girl,” said social studies teacher Megan Hanson who graduated in 2002. Mandan currently has 15 teachers that went to Mandan that have come back to teach. Due to Kuhn’s love for track and field, his only focus isn’t just the sprints, although he can be seen all over the track coaching up all of his athletes from the distance runners all the way down to the throwers. January and February Athletes of the Month

January Athletes Senior Keaton Sedivec Boys’ Swim and Dive

Keaton Sedivec had a GREAT month of January! The Braves Swimmers and Divers had 8 competitions during the month and Keaton won 7 of the 8 in his specialty of diving. Keaton’s Score of 395.85 pts a the Minot Invite made him a North Dakota 1st Team All-State and Qualified him for NISCA All American Status. He is a Team Captain this season and is truly leading the 8 members of our Diving Squad to new levels. He is a hard worker and keeps all team members reaching for their Goals. What a great month of January for Keaton and The Braves!! What a great youngman!

Senior Emily Bendish Girls Basketball

Emily Bendish has shown great leadership on the Mandan Girls’ Basketball team throughout the month of January. Her workethic speaks volumes. She always has a great, competitive attitude and expects nothing less than everyone’s best effort every time they step on the floor. All of her teammates greatly look up to Emily and respect her immensely. Statistically, Emily has had a very solid month of January. She averaged 5.3 points per game. She also had a very strong, physical presence on the floor. She averaged less than 1.5 turnovers per game along with pulling down 5.7 rebounds and blocking nearly 1 shot per game. Emily’s leadership is fairly quiet, but extremely present. She leads by her actions, and she is a great representation of what true competitiveness should look like.

February Athletes

Sophomore Mackensi Higlin Girls Basketball

Mackensi Higlin had a great month of February for Girls’ Basketball. She led the team in both points and steals per game over the 6 games that were played during the month, averaging 11.7 points per game and 2.8 steals per game. When Mackensi is playing well for us, our team has a different feel to it. We feed off of Mackensi’s ability to create a spark on the offensive end of the floor. She is a player that can take the game into her own hands and wants the ball when the game is on the line. She has great determination and is becoming a much better allaround player with each game that is played. She is really beginning to learn what her role is on this team and how she can help us out on both ends of the floor. Along with her 11.7 points and 2.8 steals per game, Mackensi also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game and found her teammates well, averaging 2.5 assists per game. Mackensi has really become a complete player and a crucial member of the Mandan Girls’ Basketball team.

Sophomore Maiah McCowan Girls Hockey

As a sophomore, Maiah has made a name for herself in girl’s hockey. She is the kind of player that everyone wants on their team but hope you don’t have to face her on the opponent’s team. Maiah is like that pesky mosquito, she is constantly buzzing around waiting for you to let down your guard so she can strike. Maiah is continually hustling, always racing

her opponent to every loose puck. She was one of our best penalty killers because of her hustle and determination to get to the puck first. Maiah’s also have very high regards for her teammates. One day she had a doctor’s appointment that made getting to practice difficult. When it was suggested that she miss practice her response was, “I will be there. I can’t let down my teammates.” Maiah’s effort makes everyone around her work harder. Maiah ends the season as our third leading scorer with 20 points (9 goals and 11 assists).

Senior Ryan Zachmeier Boys’ Wrestling

Ryan ended his high school wrestling career this February with a bang!! After losing a hard fought match in the finals of the WDA tournament, Ryan avenged that loss by defeating the #1 seeded Bismarck High wrestler by an 8-2 dominating performance in the State Finals! Upon reaching state champion status, Ryan also raised the previous school Technical Falls record from 13 up to 19 (46 season wins)! Ryan also claimed the Total Match Points in a Season with 508 and tied the Total Wins in a Season record with 46! Not only has Ryan claimed three school records this year, Ryan was also Academic All-State boasting over a 3.5 GPA! Ryan was a senior captain and a prominent leader on the team. Ryan leads mainly by example by watching film with coaches before practice, and by doing the extra work after practice. Wrestling is mainly an individual sport, but Ryan goes above and beyond himself and is seen giving advice and working with the younger classmen and teammates to help our team grow and be successful.
