tepping into Munster High School on August 13th was full of mixed emotions. We were excited— those first steps marked the start of our senior year. Within the year, we would make life altering decisions that shaped our future like where to go to college or what do after graduation. We were scared— faced with the reality of having to step outside of our comfort zone. We were triumphant— knowing that we had endured and conquered 12 long years of schooling. But most of all, we were ready. We were ready to shed the remainder of our youth and say goodbye.

E
very day of senior year, small moments become memories to last a lifetime. Everytime you do something for the last time ever— your last touchdown, your last Calc test, or your last dance with friends—you are reminded of the inevitable end of high school. Leaving the familiarity of Munster and being thrust into the real world can be scary, but falling back on fond memories can quell the uncertainty. These are the last 266 days of high school.

he Class of 2019 is unique for one reason. You are the last class of the second decade of the 21st century. The past ten years will be reviewed, analyzed and compared to other decades and ultimately will be judged based on its successes and setbacks. As individuals, I am sure that most of you have experienced similar triumphs and defeats in the last ten years of your lives as well. I am fortunate that as a teacher of many of you within your class that I have been able to witness your growth and accomplishments over the past four years. Teaching six sections of US History during your junior year allowed me to get to know almost half of your entire class, which I am extremely grateful. It was during some my lectures and class discussions that I instructed some of you on the “time, work, and leisure” dilemma. Though it might seem a rather simplistic issue, you have surely realized during your tenure at Munster High School that it

fter four full years of ups and downs at Munster High School, I have learned much so more than just what I’ve read in my books. My high school experiences, have helped shape me into the person I am today. I have laughed and cried through it all, giving me the experience to leave this school with a bit of advice. For starters, stop waiting for the moment, and enjoy the moment that you are in. There’s no better time than the present, and you often don’t realize that until it’s a memory. Actually enjoy the time you spend with your friends, instead of trying to make it look like you are via an Instagram picture. The experiences in high school help you discover who you are, so appreciate them while you can. Always strive to do your best. When you give something your all, you can’t be mad at yourself if you don’t meet your goal, there is no shame in trying. Take that AP test, audition for play, run for class president. High School shapes you into the person you are meant to be, and if you don’t try, it is reflected through your character. If you don’t pass that test, you don’t make the cast list or you don’t get elected, don’t sweat it. You tried and learned from the experience, which is all that matters. Lastly, embrace your high school experience. Show school spirit, don’t be afraid to dress up for spirit days as an underclassman, you’ll be happy you did when you look back. Go to the pep rallies, cheer on the athletic teams, and join any clubs you find an interest in. You will be surprised by all the memories you create, the friendships you make, and the experiences you share with your peers. And don’t forget, it always gets better. That bad day won’t turn into a bad year, so don’t dwell on it. Everyone goes to high school, so enjoy it, and make this experience your own.
