PUBLISHER’S NOTE helped me represent Miami during my freshman year in college, and then I also fell in love with Neo Soul thanks to Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Erykah Badu. My wedding reception was the celebration of this music history, walking in to Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” and also bringing it current with my wedding party dancing to the likes of Usher, Lil Jon, and the Black Eyed Peas. What would our memories be without the Sound of Black Music? In this issue we pay tribute to Black Music and more specifically South Florida’s Black Music. You’ll get to hear from freedom of speech trailblazer Luther Campbell, current international recording star Flo Rida, as well as a few up and coming artists. We will also introduce you to South Florida’s Entertainment Mogul Mike Gardner, who has made Miami the party destination for celebrities around the world. Now what would South Florida be without Caribbean culture? Caribbean Culture has influenced our music, inspired our taste buds, smoothed the rotation of our hips, added flair to our fashion, and of course the islands have been our second Black Music has played an integral role home as we hop on flights to our favorite in the soundtrack of many of our lives. Masterminded by “Global Spin Awards National Promoter of the Year” Michael Gardner CEO of Headliner Market Group (HMG). His empire only begins there, HMG sponsors undefeated Middleweight Champion Boxer “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin, DJ Stevie J, DIEM clothing line, and a restaurant “Prohibition.” In an indepth interview with MIA Magazine, we are allowed behind the velvet rope for an intimate look at a young man growing up in Illinois beating the odds to become the pièce de résistance King of Miami. Gardner was raised the youngest of three to a single-mother in search for the best life to raise her children that often entailed moving around to several cities throughout the Midwest before settling in Virginia. There he was named “McDonald’s AllAmerican”, his senior year of high school.

“I was three years old when someone put a basketball in my hand and I still have that picture” according to Gardner. He was offered scholarships all over before deciding on the University of Miami (UM). Basketball was his world, it taught him discipline and focus, which he would go on to use as the Headliner Market Group Guru. But that road wasn’t so smooth when his career in basketball was suddenly cut short after a “suspension for violating curfew” killed his dream of becoming a legend in basketball like his Idol Michael Jordan. He returned home, then registered at Depaul University and majored in Marketing. Upon graduating, he moved back to Miami after his cousin, Muhammad, needed help running his barbershop “Headliner” (HMG’s namesake) with plans for expansion to multiple cutteries. “In the process of waiting for those to develop, we discussed the idea of putting on an event called ‘The Player’s Ball’.” Never having produced an event before, he ambitiously embarked on a 2-day soirée that he, in retrospect, admits being unprepared for the scale and magnitude of the event. Gardner describes the event as a
disastrous failure because he didn’t make the money he expected for the sponsors. Destruction is a form of creation, and in the aftermath Gardner had to make a quick buck to reimburse them, which forced him to promote more parties, and thus a career was born. “I didn’t have a role model or guidance,” he explains, but Gardner was determined to make up the losses with his next event by calling in some old friends from the UM days and held a “Miami Heat & Dolphins Party” which settled his debts and more importantly began his career. All of Gardner’s work didn’t go unnoticed, Peter Thomas of The Housewives Of Atlanta gave him his first big-break at Barcode an “it” club in the early 2000’s. “Peter Thomas gave me the opportunity to do a weekly party.” Gardner stayed hungry, on the grind, and took what he learned to revolutionize Miami’s entertainment industry. Gardner’s hard knock commandments begin with Rule #1 “A party isn’t a party, it’s an exercise in execution that you must see to the end.” Rule #2, “Preparation...every one respects hard work and it shows in your final product.” Lastly, Rule #3, “It’s all about the people, I need the people, they don’t need me. This industry eats up the weak so you have to stay focused in whatever you do.”
Michael Gardner’s determination equipped him with the prowess to produce “The Best Party in the World.” His sights are now set on an expansion across the nation and then around the globe. But it isn’t just about him, he is now heading the “Overtown Arts and Music Festival” (July 25, 2015) giving back to the community that gave him so much. In the coming months, Michael Gardner is re-opening a historic club The “Harlem Square” in Overtown that’s part of a bigger ambitious urban land use project mix of retail, hospitality, and residential “Miami Worldcenter”, then on to Headliner Market Group’s global expansion that is not only socially conscious but community driven. It is in that spirit that the relationship between an audience and their favorite Caribbean On-Air personality is commemorated. When one migrates from the Caribbean to the States, that on-air personality can be the first person you will “meet” on the radio. It is a connection to home, and a refreshing familiar voice (accent still strong and bold). That is same person that will help you understand what’s happening to your island before, during, and after a hurricane. They will also share their political views with you. Hollywood’s Colors of the Caribbean touts cultural pride and prosperity. Held on the Saturday of Father’s Day Weekend since 2012, Colors of the Caribbean celebrates Caribbean American Heritage Month with music and flavors of the islands. Produced for the Hollywood CRA by Aifos Agency, Caribbean American Heritage Florida and The Rhythm Foundation, Colors of the Caribbean takes place Saturday June 20th, 4p.m. to 11p.m., at the downtown Hollywood ArtsPark at Young Circle (1 Young Circle, Hollywood, FL 33020). Aifos Agency chief, Asa P. Sealy, is focused on cultivating a unified and culturally diverse atmosphere. “We want people to experience a spirit of togetherness, because we—all islands--are one,” Sealy revealed. “There are so many benefits to being unified. It is important to demonstrate our collective economic and cultural impact. The faster we do that, the more respect and resources we can secure to better our community.” Live performances include: Inner Circle, reggae’s top selling “bad boys”; Trinidadian

Get those traditional dishes out of your head! At “Food onFiyah”, I dined on appetizers such as deep fried “Jerk Oysters with Jackfruit Relish and Rum Gastrique”. The oysters were impeccably fried and marinated with the perfect amount of jerk seasoning that provided the kick that you anticipate, the Jack Fruit Relish was a wonderful contrast in flavor with its naturally sweet notes, and the Rum Gastrique was so divine and creamy that it made your tongue beg for more. The dinner continued with its planned 7 courses and added surprises such as Octopus Amuse Bouche. My favorite dish of the evening was the 5th Course - Guiness Braised Short Ribs with Spanish inspired Sofrito Style Grits. This meal was a superb combination of tastes and textures made of the gravy that was ever so slightly sweet and
thick, tender short ribs and balanced with the tang of sofrito, and grainy fully seasoned grits. So throw away your traditional notions of Caribbean food and dinner pairings with wine. When you have the pleasure of countering “Food on Fiyah” be prepared for “total seduction through the explosion of flavors. It’s pure orgasmic food pleasure,” says Chef Irie. I couldn’t agree more!
