ALUMNI COLLEGE IN THE CLASSROOM Make the trip back to your alma mater complete with some time in the classroom. Taught by award-winning Miami professors, Alumni College sessions are informative, engaging and sometimes even surprising. Wide-ranging topics align with Miami University’s academic mission, treating you to a taste of today’s classroom. Alumni College sessions are free and open to all Alumni Weekend attendees, with no advance registration required. Please note that sessions will take place this year in both Benton Hall and the Armstrong Student Center East Wing as well as one session at the Freedom Summer Memorial.

Session I – Saturday, 8-8:50 a.m. The Art and Science of Negotiation Dr. Scott Dust Assistant professor of management

100 Benton Negotiation is the art and science of securing agreements and resolving disputes between two or more independent parties. To be a successful negotiator, you not only need analytical skills to discover optimal solutions (the science) but also good negotiation skills to get these solutions accepted and implemented (the art). The purpose of this course is to give an introduction to the basics of negotiations so that you have a platform for developing your negotiation skills in the future. This course is experiential (i.e., learn-by-doing); you will prepare for and engage in a negotiation, and then we will debrief and discuss as a class.

16

Keys to Talent Development in Youth Sports: It’s All the Kids Dr. Melissa A. Chase Professor of sport leadership and management

114 Benton Millions of children participate in organized sport programs every year. The reasons children participate in sport is to have fun, make new friends and improve their skills. Unfortunately, the structure of sport often contradicts these goals and children end up dropping out of sport in their early teens. In this interactive session, we will examine the key principles for talent development in sport while maintaining a positive experience for participants. We will discuss the role of parents and coaches and best practice for keeping the focus on children in youth sports.

ALUMNI COLLEGE

In the Middle of Everywhere: Comprehensive Internationalization of Higher Education Cheryl D. Young Assistant provost, Global Initiatives and eLearning

204 Benton Internationalization in higher education is a strategic and coordinated process that aligns and integrates policies, programs and initiatives to

position universities as more globally oriented and internationally connected. This session will cover why comprehensive internationalization is vital in higher education and how Miami University has engaged with the obligation to develop students as global citizens. Learn how Global Initiatives at Miami promotes the dynamic, comprehensive internationalization of the university through the infusion of multicultural and comparative perspectives in scholarship, teaching and service.

Session II – Saturday, 9-9:50 a.m. A Reintroduction to Paper: Aspects of Paper and Papermaking That Will Amaze You Dr. Steven Keller Professor of chemical, paper and biomedical engineering

will first consider the potential advantages of a social entrepreneurship approach, as well as its limitations. We will then review several notable examples of social entrepreneurship. Finally, we will explore one useful entrepreneurship tool – the value proposition canvas – and apply it to an existing social challenge.

115 Benton Paper is all around us, and we encounter it in many ways every day. But have you ever looked into the fascinating aspects of what paper is, how it is made and how it gained such importance in our lives? This session will give participants an insider’s view of this truly marvelous material that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and versatile. Not only does this material come from a renewable resource, but it is manufactured in the most amazing way by huge machines in mills that can cost up to one half a billion dollars.

Social Entrepreneurship: Innovative Approaches to Solving the World’s Most Pressing Challenges Dr. Chris Sutter David F. Herche endowed assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship

Good News, Bad News and Fake News: Media Literacy Strategies Lindsay Midkiff Miller ’05 Assistant head, University Libraries Advise and Instruct Jenny Presnell ’83 Consultation librarian and bibliographer, University Libraries

207 Benton The digital age has brought about unprecedented access to information, but, as the saying goes, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Once the gatekeepers of information, librarians are now empowering Miami students to become their own information gatekeepers. Learn about how this timely and crucial topic is being integrated into the classroom to shape responsible scholars and engaged citizens. You will also come away with a few helpful tips of your own.

206 Benton In this session, we will explore the topic of social entrepreneurship, which involves using entrepreneurial skills to tackle social problems. We 17

Session III – Saturday, 10-10:50 a.m. The William Isaac and Michael Oxley Center for Business Leadership: Making Miami Students Ready on Day One Dr. Brian Ballou Ernst & Young professor of accountancy and Center for Business Excellence co-director

100 Benton This session will describe the launch and overview of the Isaac and Oxley Center for Business Leadership, which is a unique business leadership program designed to create future ethical, values-based leaders for companies from Silicon Valley to Main Street to Wall Street. It will emphasize how top Miami students are developed and coached as future leaders and provided experiences to help lead student organizations and help on key Farmer and Miami initiatives. The three full professors who direct the center have expertise in a wide array of topics involving executive development, coaching and leadership and connect students with business leaders via intensive labs, studyaway programs and off- and on-campus professional engagement experience.

Secret Societies and Masquerade in a West African Metropolis Dr. Jordan A. Fenton Assistant professor, art history

114 Benton This class will explore the purpose and meaning of masquerade performance in West Africa. Based on Professor Jordan Fenton's own personal experiences and initiations into a number of West African secret societies, he will address the thriving nature and relevance of masquerade arts and culture in a Nigerian city. Fenton will share insights from research conducted over the last 10 years on the masquerade culture in the city of Calabar, Nigeria.

Telling the Freedom Summer Story: How the Media Framed the Story in 1964 and After Patricia Gallagher Newberry Senior lecturer, journalism and area coordinator

Freedom Summer Memorial NOTE: Golf carts will be available outside Benton Hall at 9:50 to transport Alumni College participants to the class location.

In 1964, some 800 young people came to Oxford, Ohio, to train for Freedom Summer. After two weeks, they would move on to Mississippi to register blacks to vote, teach children black history and run community programs. Three Freedom Summer participants never made it – abducted and killed by the KKK – and, in 2000, Miami University used news coverage of those tragic events to construct its Freedom Summer Memorial on Western Campus. In this session, Patricia Gallagher Newberry, area director of Miami's journalism program and a former journalist, explores the role of news coverage in the civil rights era, in Freedom Summer and in the very design of the Freedom Summer monuments on campus.

Session IV – Saturday, 11-11:50 a.m. What is Contemporary Art?

Cuba in Transition

Dr. Annie Dell’Aria Assistant professor, art history

Dr. Melanie Ziegler ’73 Senior lecturer, global and intercultural studies

206 Benton

207 Benton

Free curry in the gallery, a re-enactment of a clash between police and striking miners, a staring contest with the artist and a 24-hour montage of film history. That some of the most significant works of contemporary art in the last 30 years includes this diverse range of experiences and situations can be surprising, perhaps even perplexing. In this class, we will unpack significant themes and trends in contemporary art that blur the line between art and life, move away from the traditional mediums and transform or expand the gallery space. This class will serve as an introduction to some of the most exciting and intriguing art being produced by contemporary artists with an eye toward their art historical genealogies and theoretical grounding.

Since 1995, Melanie Ziegler has been to Cuba 12 times. In this session, she will discuss the changes that she has observed in Cuba over these past 20plus years, as well as speculate on Cuba’s future now that the post-revolution generation has assumed the leadership. She can also offer travel tips to alumni who are interested in visiting the island.

Can I Use That? Copyright Cans and Cannots Carla Myers Coordinator of scholarly communications, University Libraries

115 Benton The World Wide Web has created simple access to an enormous amount of creative content ranging from photos and videos to songs and blog posts, but what are you legally allowed to use, when are you allowed to use it and how can you protect your own creative work from misuse? U.S. copyright law addresses issues of both access and protection, and this informative session will offer you an engaging primer, some helpful resources and a platform for your copyright-related questions.

Session V – Saturday, 2-2:50 p.m. The History of the Miami Men’s Glee Club Dr. Jeremy D. Jones Naus Family Faculty Scholar, associate chair of music and conductor of the Men’s Glee Club and Collegiate Chorale

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Room 1066 (first floor) Selected by audition from all majors across campus, nearly 100 students comprise the Miami University Men’s Glee Club. Founded in 1907 by Raymond

Burke, the composer of Miami’s Fight Song and Alma Mater, and university president Guy Potter Benson, this all-male choral ensemble is among the oldest and largest groups of its kind in the nation and is recognized around the U.S. as one of the leading collegiate men's choirs. The ensemble performs on campus and has performed in Belgium, England, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Wales. This session will explore the group's rich history, early beginnings and current collaborations with the university. 19

ALUMNI COLLEGE

The Axis of Evil: Where Are They Now? Dr. Patrick Haney Professor of political science and associate dean, College of Arts and Science

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Joslin Senate Chamber (first floor) In the January 2002 State of the Union Speech, President George W. Bush coined the now famous phrase, “Axis of Evil,” that bound Iran, Iraq and North Korea together as sponsors of terrorism and proliferators of weapons of mass

destruction. In the spirit of class reunions at Alumni Weekend, this seemed a fitting time to consider what ever happened to these class members: Years of war in Iraq, a deal with Iran that now appears to be dead, and a relationship with Little Rocket Man in North Korea that had us at the nuclear brink and now maybe at the brink of peace? This session will consider these foreign policy challenges and others (don’t forget the “JV Team” on the Axis of Evil: Syria, Libya, and Cuba!), as the Trump Doctrine comes into focus. This session will likely leave more questions than answers!

Session VI – Saturday, 3-3:50 p.m.

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Room 1066 (first floor)

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Room 1086 (first floor)

We all work in teams, and the ability to collaborate with others in a team setting is a skill in high demand. How are effective teams created? This session will provide an overview of research on the use of cognitive diversity as a team formation method with the goal of increasing overall effectiveness. The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) was used to determine the thinking styles of students and form teams in the course CCA 111 – Innovation, Creativity and Design Thinking. The research was just completed, and the results will be shared at this session.

This fall, Miami’s history faculty will begin team-teaching a new course, 1968: The Year That Changed the World. This panel discussion will include a preview of the course, as well as the opportunity for alumni and other guests to share memories and recollections of the year 1968. Whether or not you experienced that year of rebellion and reaction, join this session to learn more about a year in world history that saw profound changes in everything from music and culture to politics and race relations..

LUX LESSONS Celebrate MUDEC’s 50th year at Alumni Weekend with two special classes presented by faculty who have taught at the Luxembourg campus. Alumni College sessions are free and open to all Alumni Weekend attendees, with no advance registration required.

Session I – Saturday, 9-9:50 a.m. Landmark Architecture in Luxembourg and its Neighbors Gerardo Brown-Manrique Professor of architecture and interior design

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Room 1066 (first floor) Revisit the architecture of Luxembourg and its neighbors with this session that will look at

important buildings and urban spaces in Trier, Germany; Metz, France; and LuxembourgVille, Gr.D. of Luxembourg. These include, for example, monuments from Roman antiquity familiar to Lux alumni as well as the new entry building to the Kaiserthermen in Trier; the Gothic Cathedral and the Musée Pompidou in Metz; and the Grand Ducal Palace and the Philharmonie in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

Session II – Saturday, 10-10:50 a.m. Luxembourg under Nazi Occupation Dr. Erik Jensen Associate professor of history

Armstrong Student Center East Wing, Room 1066 (first floor) On May 10, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded and formally annexed Luxembourg, after which the occupiers embarked on a draconian campaign to “Germanify” the population. French and Luxembourgish surnames, street names and

holidays became German ones, and German laws took force, including, most notoriously, those that targeted Jews. This talk – in honor of the 50th anniversary of MUDEC – will explore the various responses of Luxembourgers themselves to this occupation, from collaboration to resistance, and the multitudinous gray areas between. The public memory of this period plays a central role in Luxembourgish identity to this day, and the talk will highlight the traces of this memory in Differdange and in the capital city.
