mayor’s letter

Welcome to the 10th Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Week and Festival. Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown from a local event into a global one, with an estimated 135,000 attendees last year. This year, from April 2-8, we are proud to host a full week of events and celebrations, led by this year’s Gay Pride Grand Marshal, Olympic skier and silver medalist Gus Kenworthy and Ally Grand Marshal, NBC6’s Roxanne Vargas. We will raise our rainbow flag on Monday, light up Lincoln Road that evening to commemorate Pulse and, of course, parade down Ocean Drive as part of our annual Pride Parade on Sunday. In between all the events please enjoy our beautiful beaches and scenic beachwalk just blocks away. Our City is a one-of-a-kind destination that has something for everyone. Miami Beach is proud to host Gay Pride once again and is especially proud to support the spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community! Enjoy!

Dan Gelber Mayor of Miami Beach

chairman’s letter WELCOME TO MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! I can’t believe it’s been a decade of Pride here in Miami Beach. From an ambitious beginning in 2009, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown to a record 135,000 people from around the world who attended last year’s event. This year, we have a week of exciting events planned for Pride to celebrate our milestone. The official rainbow flag raising ceremony at City Hall and the Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride Pageant kick off the week on April 2rd. That Monday, we also pay tribute to the PULSE nightclub victims and their families with a “Flip the Switch” event in front of 1111 Lincoln Road when buildings throughout greater Miami will illuminate in rainbow flag colors. A Miami resident and PULSE survivor will flip the switch to initiate Pride Lights the Night. Then, the festivities continue all week culminating on world famous Ocean Drive on Sunday the 8th with the Parade and Festival. Check the event pages of this Pride Guide for a complete listing of events. On behalf of the board of directors, our committees, our tireless staff and an army of amazing volunteers, we want to thank you for attending and supporting our event. As a non-profit organization which offers a free Pride experience for everyone, we could not do it without your support and are extremely grateful. We also want to thank all of our sponsors and partners, without whose help it would not be possible to put on such a fantastic week! We could not produce Pride without the support of the City of Miami Beach and their ongoing support of the LGBTQ com-

munity. A special thanks goes out to Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, our City Commissioners, and the Miami Beach Police and Fire Departments. We could not have Pride without their enthusiastic support. I would also like to add that being a part of Pride and helping plan this extraordinary event has given me so much joy. When I see people during this weekend expressing themselves and being who they truly are, I am overcome with happiness that Pride allows them the platform to be authentic and genuine. We should always remember, however, it is still so difficult for so many to be able to live openly and that we have to keep working hard to protect these rights. Again, welcome to fabulous Miami Beach and have an awesome time this week. Enjoy all this beautiful city has to offer, and please party responsibly. With much respect and admiration,

Mark Fernandes Chairman, Miami Beach Gay Pride

executive director’s letter WELCOME TO THE 10TH ANNUAL MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE! It has again been an honor to serve for a third year as Executive Director for Pride. The mission of Miami Beach Gay Pride is to bring together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, their friends, allies, and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community. Welcome to the celebration! Welcome to our 10th Anniversary Celebration! We are especially excited to celebrate this year with our fabulous returning presenting sponsor: Celebrity Cruises! Everyone at Celebrity has truly embraced Pride and we are thankful and appreciative of their support and enthusiasm. They’re bringing some surprises along as well. Let’s just say, you won’t want to miss the Opening Ceremonies at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Main Stage after the parade. Returning this year is our solemn, yet dramatic, tribute to the victims, families and friends of the PULSE Nightclub shooting in Orlando. “Pride Lights the Night” will feature nearly 50 buildings throughout Miami-Dade County awash in the rainbow flag colors beginning on Monday, April 2. Those that aren’t able to illuminate will proudly fly the rainbow flag. Thanks to all the buildings who joined us in this vivid tribute. You’re invited to our “Flip the Switch” event Monday at 7:30 pm in front of the 1111 building, when a Miami resident and PULSE survivor will literally flip the switch to illuminate the building.

Once again, we are proud of our partnership with the Point Foundation. Proceeds from our Angels program will be donated to Point which helps LGBTQ students in Miami-Dade County and around the country with college scholarships. We are also proud to keep Miami Beach Gay Pride as a free event for everyone to attend and enjoy. As we prepare for another record-breaking event, we want to thank our many partners for their generous support. We also want to give a huge shout-out to our army of volunteers who are working tirelessly for you to enjoy this day. I would like to thank Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, our City Commissioners, City Manager Jimmy Morales, our Board of Directors, and our Committee Members. I am so proud to be part of an incredible team. With Pride,

PLATINUM-SELLING SINGER/SONGWRITER TO PERFORM AS HEADLINER ON SUNDAY, APRIL 8 From platinum pop songs to chart-topping dance hits, Taylor Dayne

is one of the most popular vocalists of the past three decades. Dayne will take to the main stage at Miami Beach Gay Pride as headline performer for the Pride Festival at 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, in Lummus Park just off Ocean Drive and 12th Street in Miami Beach. She has enjoyed Top 10 hits in three consequent decades, selling a combined 75 million singles and albums along the way. Originally signed by music mogul Clive Davis in the 1980s, Dayne has become a true crossover artist, someone whose popularity spans multiple generations and many different music formats. With the release of her first two albums, 1988’s Tell It to My Heart and 1989’s Can’t Fight Fate, Dayne racked up three number 1 singles: “Tell It to My Heart,” “Love Will Lead You Back” and “Prove Your Love to Me.” Her Grammy-nominated songs could

30

miamibeachgaypride

be heard across the radio dial, from Top 40 pop stations to adult contemporary channels. As the ‘80s gave way to the ‘90s, she began establishing herself as a film, television and stage actress, too, appearing alongside Warren Beatty in the movie “Love Affair,” starring in Elton John’s Broadway award-winning production of Aida, and playing Grizzabella in the 2013 Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival’s production of “CATS.” She also gained notice not only for her singing ability, but her songwriting skills, as well. Several of Dayne’s gold and platinum-selling solo albums featured her own compositions, and “Whatever You Want,” a song she co-wrote for Tina Turner, became a Top 40 hit in 10 different countries in 1996. More than 25 years after the release of her famous single, Dayne continues to tour the world.

2018 Grand Marshal Gus Kenworthy

Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy is proud to serve as the 2018 Grand Marshal for Miami Beach Gay Pride. Hot off his competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Gus is thrilled to lead the Sunday parade at Miami Beach Gay Pride. He will also be making a guest appearance at the VIP Gala Friday night. Gus is one of a kind. Not just for his skiing but for his personality, determination and heart. At the age of 23, he earned the privilege of representing the USA in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi Russia, and proudly brought home the silver medal in slopestyle. Gus has taken his talents to the highest accolades in his sport, earning seven World titles, and five X Games Medals to go along with his Silver medal from the Olympic Games. Gus is also credited with the first ever to perform a double cork 1080 and right side 1440 in a halfpipe, the first ever double flip on a hip jump and the first double flip off a rail! His dedication to his craft has established him as one of the top freeskiers in the world and one of the select few athletes to consistently make podium in slopestyle, halfpipe and big air events. In 2015, Gus made the bold and courageous decision to come out as a proud gay man. Never one to shy away from the camera or his fans, he chose the cover of ESPN magazine as the vehicle to deliver the news. He was met with widespread support, love and praise for his choice to reveal his true self. The caught-on-camera kiss of good luck from his boyfriend in PyeongChang went viral globally.
