mayor’s letter

Dear Residents and Visitors, Welcome to the 11th Annual Miami Beach Pride Week and Festival. Since its inception in 2009, Miami Beach Pride has grown from a local event into a global one, with over 135,000 attendees last year. This year, from April 1-7, we are excited to host a full week of events and celebrations, led by this year’s Pride Entertainment, Advocate, and Ally Grand Marshals. We will raise our rainbow flag on Monday, light up Lincoln Road that evening to commemorate Pulse and, of course, parade down Ocean Drive as part of our annual Pride Parade on Sunday. In between all the events please enjoy our beautiful beaches and scenic beachwalk just blocks away. Our City is a one-of-a-kind destination that has something for everyone. Miami Beach is proud to host Pride Week once again and show how we are a global icon for equality as we support the spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community! Enjoy!

chairman’s letter

In 1969, at a New York bar named the Stonewall Inn, a revolution started that would forever change the course of LGBTQ history. What began as a police raid targeting LGBTQ patrons led to passionate protests and activism efforts so LGBTQ people could be open about their sexuality without fear. We honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising as we enter our 11th year of Miami Beach Pride. During the weekend of April 6 and 7, we expect well over 100,000 people from all over the world to descend upon Miami Beach for this great celebration. The week’s festivities will start on Saturday, March 30, at Magic City Casino with the Ultimate Miami Drag Queen pageant. On Monday, April 1, there will be a flag raising ceremony at Miami Beach City Hall followed by a tribute to the Pulse nightclub victims on Lincoln Road. This is just the beginning of the weeklong festivities you can find in the event pages of this year’s Pride Guide. Of course, do not forget the huge festival Saturday and Sunday on the sands of Miami Beach where you can enjoy ocean breezes, music, food and a star-studded entertainment line-up. And then there is the incredible parade down Ocean Drive on Sunday that is not to be missed. On behalf of the Miami Beach Pride board of directors, committee members, hardworking staff and amazing volunteers, I would like to thank all of you for attending and supporting our event. Miami Beach Pride is a non-profit organization devoted to offering a free Pride experience for everyone. Special thanks go to our presenting sponsor, Celebrity Cruises. They, along with so many other wonderful sponsors, contributors (we refer to them as Angels) and partners, put Miami Beach Pride on everyone’s list as one of the greatest free events of the year. A special thank you goes to the City of Miami Beach for their incredible ongoing support

for the LGBTQ community. Mayor Dan Gelber, the city commissioners and the Miami Beach Police and Fire Departments have shown that they want Miami Beach Pride to continue and thrive not only with their words, but with their actions as well. Thank you again, City of Miami Beach. On a personal note, many people have asked me why I am involved with this organization that peaks in April, as I am an accountant in the middle of tax season. Simply put, when I stand on the stage during the festival and see thousands upon thousands of faces, I feel rewarded. I think to myself that if one person attending the festivities can feel better about themselves, that they are not alone, that they see all the support groups that will have booths at the festival and find the courage to go on with their lives, I feel I have accomplished something with my life. I feel very fortunate and honored to be able to experience that and to contribute to making our city and the world better places. Welcome to Miami Beach Pride! I hope you have a fabulous week enjoying the wonderful city, beaches, restaurants, hotels and everything else Miami Beach has to offer.

executive director’s letter

It has again been an honor to serve for a fourth year as Executive Director for Pride. The mission of Miami Beach Pride is to bring together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, their friends, allies, and supporters in celebration of the unique spirit and culture of the LGBTQ community. Welcome to the celebration! We are especially excited to celebrate this year with our fabulous returning presenting sponsor: Celebrity Cruises! Everyone at Celebrity has truly embraced Pride and we are thankful and appreciative of their support and enthusiasm. They’re bringing some surprises along as well. Let’s just say, you won’t want to miss the Opening Ceremonies at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Celebrity Cruises Stage after the parade. Returning this year is our solemn, yet dramatic, tribute to the victims, families and friends of the PULSE Nightclub shooting in Orlando. “Pride Lights the Night” will feature nearly 50 buildings throughout Miami-Dade County awash in the rainbow flag colors beginning on Monday, April 1. Those that can’t illuminate, will proudly fly the rainbow flag. Thanks to all the buildings who joined us in this vivid tribute. You’re invited to our “Flip the Switch” event Monday at 7:30 pm in front of the 1111 building, when a Miami resident and PULSE survivor will literally flip the switch to illuminate the building. Once again, we are proud of our partnership with the Point Foundation. Proceeds from our Angels program will be donated to Point which helps LGBTQ stu-

dents in Miami-Dade County and around the country with college scholarships. We are excited to add a large ferris wheel and fun slide to our north activation. We have something for everyone to enjoy! We are also proud to keep Miami Beach Pride as a free event for everyone to attend and enjoy. As we prepare for another record-breaking event, we want to thank our many partners for their generous support. We also want to give a huge shout-out to our army of volunteers who are working tirelessly for you to enjoy this day. I would like the City of Miami Beach for their incredible support, lead by Mayor Dan Gelber, our City Commissioners and City Manager Jimmy Morales. A special thank you to our Board of Directors, Committee Members and Volunteers. I am so proud to be part of an incredible team. With Pride,

Ally Grand Marshals

Judy and Dennis Shepard “We hope that by representing our Foundation and reminding people of Matt, we can encourage both those affected by hate crimes and law enforcement to step up, connect, and do a better job for LGBTQ+ community of Miami Beach.”

Miami Beach Pride is proud to announce that Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of Matthew Shepard and founders of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, will help kick off our 11th annual celebration as this year’s Ally Grand Marshals. Coming off of the 20th anniversary of the attack on University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, the Matthew Shepard Foundation has been working tirelessly to erase hate crimes and foster understanding, compassion and acceptance for the LGBTQ community. Leading these efforts, Judy and Dennis Shepard have spent two decades working to provide a safe place for LGBTQ youth and educate parents and allies on how to stand up for the LGBTQ community. Judy and Dennis were also instrumental in helping pioneer the first federal legislation against hate crimes, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. “We are incredibly honored to have Judy and Dennis Shepard be our Miami Beach Pride Ally

Advocate Grand Marshal

Juan Sanchez “His dedication and support has undoubtedly made Miami Beach a better place to live, and I couldn’t be more excited to have him be our Advocate Grand Marshal.” Miami Beach Pride is proud to announce Detective Juan F. Sanchez as the 2019 Advocate Grand Marshal. This honor recognizes local advocacy work for the LGBTQ community in Miami Beach, and Detective Sanchez’s 31-year history of law enforcement and tireless support of the community made him an ideal choice for this role.

States to bridge the gap between the police and the transgender communities. “I’ve been involved with Miami Beach Pride from year one, and it’s been incredible to see what it’s grown into,” said Sanchez. “The first year I was involved, I started by providing security for the event and never once did I think I would be a marshal for the parade. It’s very humbling and a huge honor.”

Detective Juan F. Sanchez served as a member of the Miami Beach Police Department since November 1987. In 2010, Sanchez, an openly gay police officer, was appointed by then Chief of Police Noriega to serve as the Department’s Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Liaison, a position he held until his retirement. In his position, Sanchez served as a key advisor to the current Chief of Police, Dan Oates, and his staff on LGBTQ needs.

“Having a leader and advocate like Detective Juan Sanchez be a voice for our community is an honor, and it’s an important part of creating a dialogue with the local institutions that keep our community and neighborhoods safe,” said Scott Bader, vice chairman of Miami Beach Pride.

Stonewall: The Birth & Legacy of the LGBTQ+ Movement

50 YEARS LATER

Fifty years ago, police raided the Stonewall Inn and arrested gay patrons. Little did they know the raid would inspire the LGBTQ+ community to band together and fight for equal rights for decades to come. A half century later, we honor our unsung heroes who fearlessly fought for us to love whomever we choose while embracing our true selves. In addition to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community’s rich and colorful heritage at Miami Beach Pride, we want you to know that you’re a part of our family. The more our community grows, the louder our voices become. The louder we become, the more likely we are to spark positive change.

We’ve made progress on the path toward equal rights—from the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in 2010 to marriage equality in 2015—but there’s so much more we need to accomplish. In 28 U.S. states, for example, employers can fire someone because they’re lesbian, gay or bisexual. In 30 ployer can fire somethey’re transgender. Changing the course of current events

begins with understanding your history. Enrich your knowledge of the LGBTQ+ rights movement now 50 years in the making with this timeline, courtesy of New York City Pride and Heritage of Pride.

Stonewall Early in the morning of June 28, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that had become a staple of New York City’s underground gay community. But this time, tired of the ongoing raids, community members fought back, striking what would become known as The Stonewall Riots.

October 14, 1979

The Country is Listening Following the ten-year anniversary of Stonewall and the assassination of Harvey Milk, thousands took to the streets for the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The struggle had been a collection of local ones, but for the first time, it garnered major national attention.

June 5, 1982

Christopher Street Unites! A year after Stonewall, the first Gay Pride March was held by the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee to commemorate the riots. The New York Times reported that the marchers took up the entire street for about 15 city blocks.

The Darkest Hour June 5 saw the first official documentation of AIDS, the disease that became known as GRID (gay-related immune deficiency) and “gay cancer.” In September, the CDC reported an average of one to two AIDS diagnoses in America daily. AIDS would continue to decimate pioneers into the future.

The Struggle Gains Speed One of the first major successes of the movement came when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the DSM-II, where it had been listed alongside pedophilia and zoophilia. Pride organizations began forming in major cities throughout the U.S. to continue the fight.

The March Continues Pride celebrations had been established in many major cities in the U.S., as well as around the world. Heritage of Pride was founded in 1984 to take over the planning of New York City Pride events from the disbanded Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, former organizers of The March and Rally.

June 28, 1993

A Bittersweet Policy The U.S. Government had just passed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but the good news was that gay rights remained front and center at Capitol Hill and on the streets of New York. Heritage of Pride took over the Christopher Street Festival, renaming it PrideFest.

October 16, 1997

Voices Around The World Obstacles, like the Defense of Marriage Act, continued to get in the way, but the community marched on. Heritage of Pride hosted the 16th annual International Association of Lesbian & Gay Pride Coordinators conference, the first to have substantial participation from international committees.

March 15, 2000

Small Changes Make Way For Big Ones Vermont passed the first laws allowing for Civil Unions and Registered Partnerships among LGBTQIA+ couples. It was one small step that will help pave the way for future policies.

Washington, New Hampshire, Maryland and Washington, D.C. all recognized samesex marriage. Though the struggle for gay marriage rights continued, progress was being made quicker than ever.

June 15, 2011

Equality Comes Home On the eve of Pride weekend, state lawmakers voted to make New York the sixth state in the nation, and the most populous thus far, to legally recognize samesex marriages. The Empire State joined Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.

June 26, 2013

Supreme Court Ruling One of NYC Pride’s 2013 Grand Marshals, Edie Windsor (1929-2017) brought her fight against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to the U.S. Supreme Court and won! The Federal Government now recognized same-sex marriages in states where they are legal, but the list of states still banning same-sex marriages was long.

May 17, 2004

A First Win For Gay Marriage For the first time, same-sex marriage laws were passed in Massachusetts. Laws continued to ban gay marriage in Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Oregon and Utah. Civil Unions were banned in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin.

November 4, 2008

The Marriage Plot Thickens In California, another victory for same-sex marriage was swiftly struck down several months later when voters pass ballot initiative Proposition 8.

August 4, 2010

Marching Towards Marriage Equality A federal court declared California’s Proposition 8 unconstitutional, while

June 28, 2015

One Nation Under Love 46 years after a riot at the Stonewall Inn ushered in the modern gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide. The fight continued across the nation, as full protections (including housing, employment, and public accommodations) proved illusive in many states.

Carrying on Stonewall’s Legacy at Miami Beach Pride Throughout Miami Beach Pride, we continue the legacy of the brave LGBTQ+ people who showed us the importance of being ourselves and loving who we love without fear. When we raise our rainbow-colored flags toward the sky, we honor everyone who fought for our rights at Stonewall. As we parade down Ocean Drive, we remember the trailblazers who paved the path for us to share our pride with Miami Beach and the world.
