Thank You! On behalf of everyone who enjoyed the 2014 Miami Book Fair International, we want to thank your for your generous support! We hope you enjoy this recap of last year’s Fair highlighting all the amazing programming and events made possible by the generosity of supporters like you. Thirty one years of Miami Book Fair have proved one thing: Our community loves books and will come out in droves to celebrate, and participate, in the culture of ideas the Fair encourages. We opened with a discussion on marriage equality led by attorney Theodore Olson, followed by Ira Glass’ dance and radio-storytelling mash-up performance, and spent the next seven days in the company of some of the U.S.’s best writers, including 10 of this year’s National Book Awards winners and finalists; Larry McMurtry, the novelist who defined the American West; Anne Rice, who elevated the vampire tale to perfection over a 30-year career; preeminent biographer Walter Isaacson; Cervantes prize winner, Elena Poniatowska; star of film and stage, John Cleese; musical legend George Clinton in conversation with musical legend-in-the-making Questlove; and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, among more than 600 others. Due to the support of sponsors like you, the Fair has been able to respond to our community’s wants over the last 31 years. We’ve brought dozens of independent and mainstream publishers to sell books during the Street Fair and reimagine our children’s programs, giving free books to thousands of kids to encourage the love of reading. Among the new ventures this year, we charted new territory at The Swamp, a literary lounge celebrating all things Florida. The Swamp’s off-beat programs and live music created the perfect environment to hang out with fellow Book Fair fans.

The pop-up store, Exile Books, featured limited-run artist books, printing demos, and Yoko Ono’s Wish Trees. The Fair presented hundreds of thought-provoking programs and fun events. The good news? If you could not make it to Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus to take part of The Fair in person, you could still experience it by watching online! Partnerships with C-Span’s BookTV and Detroit Public Television, and the good work of local tech company, UA in Media, made it possible for us to live stream (and archive) many of the Fair’s programs, as well as interviews with Fair authors. Every year our goal is a better Book Fair, the creation of a gathering where everyone in our community, and beyond, can find their place. The Swamp Knight Foundation The Swamp, a pop-up literary and cultural performance lounge sponsored by the Knight Foundation debuted at last year’s Book Fair, garnering resoundingly positive media attention and welcoming more than 5,000 people over eight days. The Swamp, described as the love child of famed Miami watering hole, Jimbo’s, and the chic Delano hotel, celebrated Florida’s (specifically Miami’s) unique cultural mix by including more than 45 events created by 21 Florida-based cultural organizations. Six Wynwood street artists created specially-commissioned murals for the space, bringing Miami’s vibrant street art scene into the Swamp.

Partner organizations included WLRN Radio, HistoryMiami museum, Rhythm Foundation, Borscht Film Festival, City Theatre, and O, Miami Poetry Festival. Performers and authors included international superstar Buika, The Spam All Stars, Lakou Mizik (Big Night in Little Haiti), Judy Blume, Lynn Waddell and Lola Haskins. All Swamp events were also live-streamed online, bringing all of the fun to an even larger audience.

Street Fair OHL/Arellano The three-day Street Fair (November 21-23), sponsored by the OHL/Arellano, is the soul of the Book Fair with more than 200 national and international exhibitors selling millions of books. There is also live music, street performers, children’s activities, and delicious food of every variety. Not to mention entire sections dedicated to comics (Destination Comics) and up-and-coming regional writers (Writers Row). Attending vendors/publishers this year included Books & Books, Harper Collins, Houghton Mifflin, Penguin Books (Book Truck), and Akashic Books just to name a few.

FestivalAmerican of Authors Airlines The Festival of Authors, sponsored by American Airlines, is the beating heart of the Book Fair. From newcomers to Nobel Prize winners, the Fair features the greatest line-up of authors in the country. The Ibero-American Authors program features the best in Spanish-language literature, while the Caribbean program highlights top writers from that region. More than 600 authors came to the Fair in 2014, representing 25 countries and all genres of literature. Attending authors in 2014 included Alexander McCall Smith, Anne Rice, Dave Barry, Nick Kristoff, Barbara Ehrenreich, Chuck Todd, Joyce Carol Oates, the National Book Award winners, Azar Nafisi, Edwidge Danticat, Walter Isaacson, John Waters, Richard Dawkins, Questlove, and John Cleese just to name a few. Panel discussions covered hot and timely topics, including: entrepreneurship in the age of tech, the legacy of James Baldwin, resilient communities, online literary criticism, immigrant voices in the 21st century, and the life and times of William S. Burrough, amongst many others.

The The Park Miami Foundation

and Miami Marlins Foundation

In 2014, Miami Book Fair International again created a Pop-up Park sponsored by The Miami Foundation and Miami Marlins Foundation. The temporary green space was created to focus on reading and health and wellness activities. An estimated 50,000 children and their families participated in Pop-Up Park activities last year. The Park provided an urban green space and promoted a healthy lifestyle by giving families a place to play, do yoga, read, and spend time together. Programs at the Park last year included: • Various family- and children-friendly yoga classes themed around children’s literature and world music. • A farmers market (in partnership with Urban Oasis Project) offering the best seasonal, organic produce and fresh and nutritious foods and juices. • An interactive mural/art workshop inspired by famous children’s book character: Fancy Nancy. • Life-sized chess and checkers. • A real-life Quidditch team from the University of Miami played at the Park and offered lessons to kids.

The Miami Foundation also sponsored the Generation Genius Authors program and The Evenings With session with two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author Nicholas Kristof. A highlight of this year’s Fair, Mr. Kristof spoke about his newest book A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity. Mr. Kristof also participated in a Twitter chat (co-presented by the Book Fair and The Miami Foundation) prior to the Fair’s start.

The Kitchen Miami DDA The Kitchen, sponsored by the Miami Downtown Development Authority, brought top cookbook authors and chefs to the Fair to discuss their culinary philosophies and demonstrate their recipes in the Miami Culinary Institute’s state-of-the-art Wine Theatre. Attendees could munch, sip, and ask questions about newly published cookbooks and the ever-expanding, worldwide food. Topics and culinary delights featured last year included classics such as Soul Food, the Cuban table and fried chicken, newer cooking trends such as Paleo-Vegan, and the best of South Florida fish, mangos, and craft beer. Last year’s Kitchen featured 18 chefs/authors including Dana Cowin, Fabio Viviani, Lee Schrager, Ellen Jaffe Jones, and Libby O’ Connell.

Generation Genius programs foster literacy, promote reading and encourage learning. and promotion provided by our media partners this year, we worked closely with WLRN to capture the unique stories of Miami in just six words. Through our #6wordsmiami project we asked the city of Miami to tell us their stories using only six words. After a robust marketing campaign and several lively #6wordsmiami events, we received more than 7,000 submissions. Six finalists were selected and crowned winner at this year’s Book Fair. All the finalists’ stories were matched with photos by acclaimed local photographer Carl Juste and made into postcards.

Author's Party The Standard and SMGQ The Author’s Party, hosted by the Standard hotel and sponsored by SMGQ Law, was a highlight of the weekend for both the participating authors and the Fair’s closest friends and supporters. More than 600 guests attended the celebration held in the deck at the Standard hotel looking over beautiful Biscayne Bay. From the chance to meet and chat with this year’s biggest authors like Norman Lear, Questlove, Dave Barry, and the majority of the National Book Award finalists, to hearing live poetry readings from luminaries like Claudia Rankine, this year’s Author’s Party was one more way to celebrate reading.

Marketing and Promotion The 2014 Miami Book Fair International generated nearly 385 million identified gross impressions through marketing, promotional and advertising campaigns for the 2014 Book Fair. Our outreach efforts for the 2014 Book Fair increased dramatically in scope and strategy as well as national and regional impact. A few highlights of the marketing campaign include: • More than 351 million social media impressions – through increased outreach efforts on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube. • More than 7 million online impressions - via email blasts, ads and other online promotions through national efforts, as well as with local partners such as The Miami Herald, Miami New Times, and Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and niche publications like Goodreads, South Florida Gourmet, Munchkin Fun and South Florida Parenting. • Nearly 14 million outdoor/onsite impressions - through outdoor marketing campaigns leveraging partnerships with Miami-Dade County Transit, Tri-Rail, and others to place posters in metro rail and tri rail cars and platforms, street pole banners, and metro buses. • PBS coverage of Miami Book Fair aired on 125 channels, in 82 markets in 32 states representing more than 52% of the national market. • More than 12 million media impressions – generated by national, regional and local media marketing partners included: NBC 6, WLRN, WSVNy 7, Comcast, Miami Herald, Univsion Radio and TV, Miami New Times, C-Span, and PBS/DPTV.
