Spring Summer

Dear Friends, Welcome to the Center's 10th season! I am so proud to write those six words above… After years as director of Miami Book Fair International, I dreamed of a center that would allow the Book Fair's mission to grow, while facilitating the creation of new, multi-faceted literary and theatre programs that would benefit Miami Dade College students and our South Florida community all year round (not just the eight days of the Book Fair). My planning partners at the College gave freely of their time as we committed dreams to paper throughout the grant-writing stage, and I thank them from my heart. Their invaluable input, College President Dr. Eduardo J. Padron’s support, and our seed grant from the Knight Foundation, helped create the Center we know and love. The Center is for readers and actors, book lovers and theatre aficionados. It is for aspiring writers and award-winning authors, children learning to sound out their first words, and college students ready to make their mark on society. It is the supportive community beginners need as they shape words into poems or bring them to life on the stage. And maybe more importantly, it is for those who have not yet felt the joy of reading… the place where they can discover the books that will help them fall in love with stories. Over the past 10 years, we have worked hard to offer something for everyone, to truly be a Center, a gathering place for all who want a bit more literature and theatre in their lives, and I am overjoyed to say we’ve accomplished our goals. There is only one thing left for us to do: give you more. The next 10 years will be even better. Please join us as we celebrate our birthday throughout this year; come out to one of our events (details inside and online). And send me your thoughts — what would you want to find at YOUR Center over the next 10 years? With my best wishes,

Alina Interián Executive Director The Center @ MDC alina.interian@mdc.edu

Get instant feedback on your book idea and some free advice. Best pitch gets a prize! Participation in the Pitch-O-Rama is free and open to everyone by signing up, first come, first served, in Room 2106 on Saturday, May 5. 2-day publishing seminar: Thursday, May 3 - Friday, May 4, 6 - 8 p.m.

How To Get Published Successfully
with Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry: It is the greatest time in history to be a writer. The barrier to publishing has been torn down and now anyone can get published. But to get published successfully is a whole other matter. Eckstut and Sterry, authors of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, take you through the entire publishing process. This step-by-step, soups-to-nuts workshop will remove the smoke and mirrors from the murky world of publishing and give writers a compass and map to a successfully published book. Topics covered include choosing the right idea; creating a blockbuster title; crafting an attention-getting pitch; putting together a selling proposal/manuscript; finding the right agent/publisher; self-publishing effectively with ebooks, print-on-demand or traditional printing; developing sales, marketing and publicity savvy; producing a video book trailer and helping it go viral; building a following through social media; and more.

3-day workshop: Wednesday, May 2 - Friday, May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

Building a Story: A Fiction Workshop with Ann Hood In order for a short story or novel to work, it must have a strong, solid beginning. On the first day of this workshop, we will look at your opening scenes or opening chapter and discuss its strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to improve it. You will rewrite with those suggestions in mind for the second day. With a polished opening, you can then write and bring in what comes next on the final day. When you leave, you will have a polished beginning and what that beginning leads into.

3-day workshop: Wednesday, May 2 - Friday, May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

Writing Crime Fiction with SJ Rozan: Character, setting, plot, theme and voice are the tools all writers use to create good and enduring fiction. Crime writers, in addition, must ask and answer high-stakes story questions, such as: Why this death? Who else is in danger? What will "justice" mean in this situation? This three-day workshop will discuss and illustrate these points, focusing on examples from a variety of crime novels and stories. Participants will do in-class exercises designed to enable them to employ these tools in individual ways. Time will be allowed for discussion of points of particular concern to participants, ranging from issues of style to questions about the world of publishing. Ann Hood

Teatro Prometeo

2012 Miami Writers Institute (continued) 3-day workshop: Wednesday, May 2 - Friday, May 4, 2 - 5 p.m.

Writing for Book Deals: From Pitch to Proposal with Ryan D. Harbage: This workshop is ideal for nonfiction writers, from authors of memoir to practical nonfiction, although novelists will benefit too. Just as television writers need a spec script and musicians need a demo to get agents and deals, authors of memoir and nonfiction need a book proposal — and novelists need a pitch, overview and query letter. Lectures include a thorough description of each component of a book proposal, a concise breakdown of how agents and publishers work, how to find and secure an agent and how writers are compensated.

4-day workshop: Wednesday, May 2 - Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

The Masked Poet: A Poetry Workshop with Marilyn Nelson This workshop will tackle the persona poem and the dramatic monologue, and will begin with directed readings of several master poets, including Robert Browning, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Gwendolyn Brooks, Frank X Walker, and Helen Frost, seeking to understand their methods for inventing the speaker and the speaker's voice in a complexly-articulated, "believable" world. We will outline a sequence of poetic assignments, and then review poems from the workshop, considering them in light of our models.

4-day workshop: Wednesday, May 2 - Saturday, May 5, 9 a.m. -12 p.m.

Telling It True: Writing About Place, People, and the World with Dinty W. Moore: The literary genre known as creative nonfiction focuses on the human desire to tell — and be told — compelling stories, but the form includes more than childhood memoir. This four-day course will explore the flexibility and power of the creative nonfiction form, examining the myriad ways in which writers such as Joan Didion, Gay Talese, Susan Orlean, and others combine the personal voice with journalistic observation to transform place, people, food, travel, and nature into gripping prose. We will employ in-class writing and exercises to explore various topics and try our hand at multiple forms. Marilyn Nelson
