Welcome to the 2013-14 Season! One thing is true about The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College, we celebrate literature and theatre every year, all year round, by offering top-notch programs for people of all ages and interests. But this year we are celebrating even more. Miami Book Fair International, the finest literary festival in the country, is 30-years-old. Teatro Prometeo, home of the only Spanish-language theatre arts conservatory in the U.S., begins its 40th year with renewed commitment to presenting enthralling productions, while educating the next generation of actors. And the biggest celebration of all? The re-boot of Miami Dade College’s Cultural Affairs Department with a new name and identity — MDCulture — under the leadership of a true visionary, Alina Interián, founding executive director of The Center. We invite you to Activate: MDCulture on September 20, an evening of film, visual arts, theatre, and musical performance during which we’ll unveil this year’s Book Fair posters. We urge you to be part of our many Book Fair celebrations in the coming months — readings with award-winning, best-selling authors in English and Spanish — and of Prometeo’s premier performances. All the details are in the calendar inside. This season, The Center also continues its many Generation Genius literacy and learning programs for children and teens, creative writing workshops and The Big Read. Join in building cultural Miami! The First 20 Pages: Establishing Voice, Method and Narrative Stakes at the Beginning of Your Memoir with Bill Clegg and Jill Bialosky The adage goes: You only get one chance to make a first impression. For your manuscript, it’s the same. This workshop will focus on the opening pages of a memoir, with a focus on establishing voice, method and narrative stakes. The workshop will include a combination of manuscript feedback with examination of how other writers have started their memoirs. Participants should submit the first 20 pages of their memoirs by October 23 to Nicole Swift at nswift@mdc.edu

Telling Someone Else’s Story: Collaborative Writing with Patricia Mulcahy

Writing with or for someone else requires what novelist Colum McCann calls “radical empathy,” not just editorial and/or writing skill. In this three-day workshop participants will pair off and exchange stories. So bring a tape recorder and a computer or tablet – anything with a keyboard that will enable you to interview your cohort and then present your version of the story that best defines him or her. We’ll look at some examples of successful commercial collaborations and also try exercises in perception and differing viewpoints — how do you “read” someone else, and then verbalize the results — to kick off the workshop.

Manuscript Consultations:

2 - 5 p.m. | Friday, November 22

Scheduled by appointment only.

The Secret Mechanisms of the Novel with Jorge Eduardo Benavides Many people want to write a novel. You have a story, characters and an argument. However, do we know what resources appeal to a writer when they start writing and shaping a story, character and argument, and moreover, how they elaborate a narrative strategy? In this talk/ workshop, intended for those who want to know how to prepare, design and write a novel, we will address the principal lines that cross the development of such, regardless of its genre. Thus, we will explore aspects such as narrative styles, character development, writing first drafts, editing successive drafts, and especially analyze and discuss some of the myths surrounding the work of a novelist. Specific novels from notable authors will be used as examples of the creative process of writing a novel.
