Ongoing Paz Prize for Poetry 2014-2015

Read to Learn Books for Free

The Center established The Paz Prize for Poetry in partnership with The National Poetry Series in Spring 2012 to celebrate The Center’s 10th anniversary. The award honors a poet writing in Spanish, living in the United States.

Kids living in under-resourced Miami neighborhoods have little access to books outside of school. Nearly half of Miami-Dade County third graders fail to read even at basic grade level, and only onethird read proficiently. Studies show that children with greater access to books are more likely to read well and succeed academically.

The first winner of the award was Dinapiera Di Donato for her collection, Colaterales, chosen by the prize’s inaugural judge, Victor Hernández Cruz.

Submission guidelines: thecenteratmdc.org or NationalPoetrySeries.org.

The Center is meeting this challenge in partnership with The Children’s Trust. So far, the Center has placed more than 21 shelves full of children’s books, free for the taking, in locations throughout the County where children visit with their caretakers, including public health clinics, community service centers, public housing and others.

Generation Genius StoryArts!

The Center is actively looking for donations of new or gently used books to keep the shelves full.

The second Paz Prize winner will be chosen by acclaimed poet, Richard Blanco. Winner will be announced November 2014.

Literacy program begins at City of Miami parks’ afterschool centers in Little Haiti Park, Legion Memorial Park and Charles Hadley Park as well as in public libraries throughout Miami-Dade County. Children will read along with artist/literacy educator, Becky Quiroga Curtis, then create artworks inspired by the selected titles.

Since May 2012, The Center has distributed over 71,000 books. For more information: thecenteratmdc.org/readtolearn

Will this workshop make you funny? No. Only a lifetime of using humor to cope with emotional pain can do that. But this workshop will teach you to use the techniques of professional funny people to enhance the humor in your own writing.

Friday, September 19 6 p.m. | MDC Museum of Art + Design, Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd., Downtown, Miami

Exhibit Opening: LEBO Pops Up: Artworks David “LEBO” Le Batard is a Cuban American artist widely recognized for working in a wide spectrum of creative media, including murals, paintings and sculptures. He is the innovator of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism, a movement that combines cartoon imagery with richly saturated color and unique linear compositions, and which ranges from the abstract to the highly narrative, inspiring emotion, and creating layers of meaning. LEBO is more than an abstract artist and mural painter. He is a storyteller, draftsman, and colorist who uses the iconographic and emblematic power of cartoons to create a graphic language that continually evolves. This pop-up exhibition celebrates LEBO’s unique place in the art world, and in Miami. He is Miami Book Fair International’s official poster artist for 2014. The exhibit will be on view through October 4 during normal museum hours.

Generation Genius StoryArts! Bridging creative thinking, art-making and literacy, a trained art educator conducts a story time with children ages 4-8. The children, along with their parents, then participate in an interactive activity that inspires them to read and create their own visual artwork based upon the featured book — every child gets to keep the book for continued at-home learning. Inclusion, Omission and Precision in Poetry, with Tony Hoagland

Three-day Workshop: Meets daily: Wednesday, November 19 – Friday, November 21, 9 a.m. - Noon

Writing Imaginative Fiction: A Wonderbook Workshop, with Jeff VanderMeer How do you balance the practical and the imaginative in your writing and revision? How can you merge the organic, subconscious elements of your fiction with the need to be analytical? Learn the answers as you critique manuscripts with and receive instruction from Jeff VanderMeer, author of the awardwinning Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction. Exercises will include finding the autobiographical in the fantastical, use of freedom and constraint to energize even traditional approaches, and analysis of successful but atypical scenes as the jumping-off point for discussion of characterization, setting, and the numinous. VanderMeer’s critiques will provide you with detailed feedback on your story and also general analysis. This workshop is suitable forand welcomes-all modes and styles of fiction.

Generally, most poems don’t have enough in them. They don’t have enough objective information. Then there is emotional information. Five times out of six, the poet mistakenly believes that the reader intimately shares her or his subjective reality — is a mind reader. But in fact, the transmission received by the reader is fragmentary, and stuttering and incomplete — the situation is not thoroughly represented, or what is at stake is not made clear. Practically every good poem can be looked at through this lens — what has gotten into the poem? What has been left out? And has the writer choreographed this drama with precision, so that the reader experiences that gasp of participatory insight? What one most hopes to get from a workshop is an enlarged repertoire of craft — some new devices, and muscles and gestures, and comprehensions, that will make one a permanently better writer.

Three-day Workshop: Meets daily: Wednesday, November 19 – Friday, November 21, 2 - 5 p.m.

Fictive Beginnings, with Bradford Morrow Opening words evolve into a sentence. A sentence unfolds into a paragraph which, followed by other paragraphs, evokes a narrative world. The first lines of a work of fiction are critical, because it is here that writer engages reader. And reader engages right back — or walks away. Every nuance, from the dynamism of the language to the uniqueness of character or crisis, is crucial to the “birth” of a narrative. This workshop will address in detail how the opening of a story or novel in a current draft might be improved, jolted into something more electric or smoothed into something more subtle (or both), depending on the nature of the larger work. Participants will submit 3-4 opening pages of a work of fiction to be shared with the class. Please bring a précis of the larger narrative, with final paragraph, if written, for later discussion.
