2023-2024
Miami Country Day School empowers every student, every day, everywhere to learn with vigor, explore with purpose, strive for excellence, and serve with honor, respect, and compassion as global citizens.
We do this in a community where every student is known and included by engaging the whole child, in and out of the classroom, as they discover their full potential.
As a member of the Spartan community, I put children at the center of all I do and say by modeling our values of purpose, respect, compassion, honor, and wisdom.
I value diverse perspectives, shared experiences, and uphold the dignity of each member of our global community.
Cultivates the curiosities, motivations, and interests of all our learners to build individual and collective purpose.
Builds on the foundation for empathy and is indispensable to learning, productive inquiry, and civic engagement.
Upholds dignity and rights of each member and values our diverse perspectives and experiences.
Grows through our commitment to the intellect, spirit, and character of every person and of the whole community, as well as seeking truth, knowledge, and excellence.
Fosters integrity and honesty in all that we do and ensures trust and confidence within our community.
What an amazing year our 85th anniversary year was: the celebrations were ongoing and Spartan Pride soared! Thank you for sharing your Spartan Pride throughout. Thank you also for your commitment to the School’s unique history; and how exciting it is to prepare for what the next decade will bring for Miami Country Day School.
Once again, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your incredible generosity throughout the year. As your President and Head of School, I deeply appreciate your contributions to our philanthropic initiatives, including the Spartan Impact Fund, the Gala anniversary event, the Parents’ Association programs, and special events like the Indian Creek golf tournament. Your contributions are not just financial; they are essential to our mission. As you’ll see in the following pages, the initial and upcoming phases of our capital campaign will fund projects that further strengthen our mission, build on the School’s strong foundation, and generate great excitement for its future.
Every year your philanthropic partnership enables our teachers to guide our students in their learning, both in and out of the classroom, as we continue to strive for academic excellence. Your dedication is a testament to the high standards we uphold, and we are proud to have you as part of our community. The activities and events that take place daily, on and off campus, are impacted by your care, support, and investment in our school community. Thank you for showing your Spartan Pride in such meaningful ways.
As you read in the 85th Anniversary Beacon in May, I am especially proud of the “labor of love” that our faculty members Kristina Martinez, Michele Thibodeau, and Sam Brown shared that resulted in the beautiful commemorative anniversary book highlighting 85 stories reflecting the past, present, and future of MCDS. I invite you to get your copy here: https://square.link/u/ASpaZims
President and Head of School
The culmination of the school’s 85th Anniversary Year came on May 23 with a formal groundbreaking and a party to celebrate our collective Spartan Pride. Gathered together were members of the Board of Trustees, early leadership donors to our emerging capital campaign, athletic faculty and staff, our partners from Moss Construction, TD Bank, and more. This marked a pivotal moment in our school’s journey towards enhanced spaces of all kinds across campus and the commencement of the broader masterplan. Putting shovels in the ground underscores the collective commitment to turning our vision into reality and signals the tangible progress and promising future ahead. Mariandl Hufford, in her remarks at the groundbreaking may have said it best,
“ Today marks a huge step forward for MCDS. We set out four years ago to chart a new path for the MCDS experience. Central to that experience, for both students and faculty, is the pursuit of excellence, not only in programs and program delivery, but also in the creation of spaces to offer maximum flexibility and open up every opportunity possible. We never want our built environment to be a limitation – the reason we can’t conduct an experiment, create a collaborative project, or train for a new athletic record or personal best. This moment today is just the beginning. I dream of a new Upper School and other academic upgrades, as well as ways to support the lifeblood of our school - our teachers and staff.”
Thank you to the following donors who have made early campaign commitments to invest in the future of the school with their leadership support. For more information on the project and how you can get involved, please contact Caitlin Forsthoefel, Interim Director of Advancement at forsthoefelc@miamicountryday.org.

Miami Country Day’s Board of Trustees is the guardian of the School’s mission to educate the whole child and inspire our children to develop their intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social, emotional, and spiritual potentials by valuing every student every day. As guardians of the Mission, the Board’s primary role is to ensure the school’s financial sustainability.
The Board meets five times a year to review and approve strategic proposals that are relevant and vital to our school community, as well as to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling its mission. At the Annual Board Meeting, the Committee on Trustees proposes and prepares qualified candidates for election. The elected members serve our institution for three years. Each member may serve up to two terms, however, a unanimous decision of the Executive Committee would allow the member to serve additional terms.
Our trustees that left a legacy behind for what they gave to the school are acknowledged for their role:
Barbara North Burton
John F. “Bud” Farrey
J. Michael Garner
Javier Holtz
Osmond C. Howe, Jr.
Terry Jove
Anne Paulk
Mark C. Piper

Lifetime Emeritus
Our trustees that are no longer with us but have left a legacy behind for what they have given to the school are acknowledged for their role.

For our family, Miami Country Day School is home. This school has given so much to our family and we are forever grateful for the positive influence it has had on us the past 10 years. The future has never been brighter for our community, and we are so excited for the next chapter of this remarkable institution. In an ever-changing world, there is no school better suited to provide our kids with all the necessary tools to succeed in life. Our vision is to continue to foster an institution that provides a platform for every child to succeed and pursue their passions.
We have an incredible community, faculty, leadership, and a plan that will open doors for all our children and those who will join the Spartan community in years to come. We believe that if you can dream it, you can achieve it. Our family is excited and committed to making our school a place where every child that goes to MCDS can achieve their dreams. This community is capable of anything; join us and let’s follow our dreams to support and continue to develop this special place we call home!
I am most excited about all the planned developments, including the state-of-the-art Spartan Athletic Center. that will happen at MCDS over the next few years. We are witnessing the school’s evolution becoming the pinnacle of the arts, technology, and innovation.
As an alumnus, I can attest to the profound impact Miami Country Day School had on my personal and professional growth. The school’s commitment to academic excellence, coupled with its nurturing community, creates a supportive environment where students can thrive, be different, explore their passions, and develop their potential.
Stephen ’35 and Frances ‘33
As a new Trustee, I look forward to an exciting future for Stephen and Frances, as Miami Country Day continues to reinvest for each child to be the best they can be by holistically developing every student through academics, athletics, and a variety of extracurricular activities.
Choosing the “best-fit” school is one of the most important decisions parents will make. We chose Miami Country Day school because of their well-known academic reputation, bolstered by top tier teachers and a culture which allows each student to thrive and pursue their unique talents.
Kirsty Tester, Georgia ’30, Rosie ’32, Henry ‘36
We joined MCDS five years ago at an inflection point in the school’s development; under the board and Mariandl’s leadership there was a clear determination to cherish the best attributes from the school’s proud 85-year history, solidify the vision and mission of the school, while developing a bold and ambitious plan for the future. The commitment to excellence, continuous improvement and bold ambition for the school is what excites us most for the next few years. For us that looks like the continued focus on the academic program, attracting and retaining the best educators who are looking ahead and tailoring the programs to the future needs of the students. The development of the campus itself its hugely important to create the best possible environment for how students learn and collaborate in today’s world and its incredibly exciting to see the first step in the campus upgrades coming to life. We are excited to welcome new families to the diverse and international MCDS community that fosters a global perspective for the students and broadens their horizons.
Witnessing in our children the ways they have developed over the past five years reinforces our belief in the school’s mission. We’ve seen the results first-hand of the school’s focus on the ‘whole child’ through a holistic approach allowing children to discover their passions, nurture their leadership skills, build confidence, and add depth to their character. We believe this is the best way to prepare children for their future. We believe in the direction and leadership of the school and only see momentum building for the future; the best days of the school lie ahead for the entire MCDS community!
The 1938 Society recognizes the leadership of those benefactors whose cumulative monetary gifts or irrevocable gifts to Miami Country Day School have reached $1 million or more. In 2015 during the school’s 75th Anniversary year, former Head of School, Dr. John Davies, recognized members of the inaugural class of the 1938 Society. A sculpture titled Wisdom by Santiago Medina was installed on the Plaza de Colombia as a symbolic representation to honor present and future members. Thank you to our current 1938 Society members for your generosity to Miami Country Day School.

Miami Country Day School mourns the passing of Harvey Chaplin. As the grandfather of nine Country Day graduates, Harvey and his family have been a part of the Country Day community for over 25 years. Their generous philanthropic support has ranged from the school’s annual fund, to gifts in-kind and sponsorships for special events, to leadership support of capital campaigns. As one of the founding members of the 1938 Society, Country Day is grateful for the generosity and lasting legacy that Harvey created and from which so many have benefitted over the years.
In 2004, as part of the Securing the Future Campaign, the Chaplin and Jove Families established the school’s first-ever endowed teaching chairs, The Arlene S. Chaplin Chair in Mathematics named by Harvey, and The Harvey R. Chaplin Chair in Science, named in his honor by his three children. Thanks to their leadership, and a long-held commitment by the school’s board of trustees to grow the school’s endowment to ensure a strong financial foundation, the school’s overall endowment has grown from $1,647,301 in 2004 to over $21 million today.
In addition, the Chaplin and Jove Families supported the creation of the Chaplin Jove Family Student Activities Center, which is bustling with Upper School students during the school year and camp activity during the summer. The family also supported the new fields as part of the same campaign and more recently, contributed arts scholarship funding during the Campaign for the Arts.
Harvey R. Chaplin (1929-2024), Founder and Chairman of Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, the world’s pre-eminent distributor of beverage alcohol, died on June 9, 2024 age 95 at home surrounded by family in Miami, Florida. Mr. Chaplin also served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shaw-Ross International Importers, Inc.
Mr. Chaplin was born in 1929 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York. He attended grade school at P.S. 156, then junior high school at P.S. 252. By 1946, the year he graduated from Brooklyn’s Boys High School, he had already begun his career in the wine and spirits industry, having landed a part-time position in the mailroom at Schenley Industries, whose offices were then located in the Empire State Building in Manhattan. At that time Schenley was a leading distilled spirits marketer as well as the American importer of Dewar’s White Label Scotch.
Mr. Chaplin quipped that his “college education” was earned at Schenley, as he worked his way up from the mailroom to become assistant director of marketing at the company. Mr. Chaplin says that his “graduate school” degree came from his work as a distributor in upstate New York from 1961 to 1968, where he ran wholesale operations in Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany. In 1969, Mr. Chaplin joined Southern Wine and Spirits of America, a predecessor company of Southern Glazer’s, along with other founding executives.
Prior to becoming its Chairman and CEO of Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. in 1994, Mr. Chaplin served in numerous senior executive roles running day-to-day operations of the company from 1969 to 1993. Today, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, which was formed on July 1, 2016, following a combination with Glazer’s Distributing of Dallas, Texas, then the country’s fourth largest wine and spirits distributor, is a privately held company and the largest distributor of beverage alcohol in North America. The multi-generational, family-owned Company has operations in 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Canada, as well as brokerage operations through its WEBB Banks division in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
Mr. Chaplin is survived by his wife, Roberta; his first wife Arlene died in 2000, with whom he had three children, Paul (Karen); Wayne (Arlene), and Terry (Fred) Jove; and nine grandchildren, Monica (Moises); Elizabeth (Evan); Katie (Spencer); David (Ashley); Jennifer (Sean); Mark (Carly); Scott (Zoe); Ryan (Lauren); and Tyler (Tatiana). He also is survived by 10 great grandchildren.
The Legacy Society provides long-term financial assistance for Miami Country Day School. Individuals and families who are members of The Legacy Society are supporting the financial sustainability of the school through bequests made by a will, life insurance policy, or other estate gifts.
All planned gifts add strength to the school’s endowment, which is the financial foundation for a successful educational institution. Endowed funds generate income and support scholarships, teachers, buildings, programs, and other important purposes set by the Board of Trustees.
There are many planned giving options available, such as naming Miami Country Day School as a beneficiary in your will and charitable gift annuities that provide a steady income for you and your family during your lifetime.
The following individuals and families are supporting the financial sustainability of the school by including Miami Country Day School in their estate plans to provide the school with the necessary funding to offer an extraordinary education to students.
