Summer 2016
#MCDSummer90
History before there was a school, there was a camp. Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938, but its origins are closely tied to the world of Summer Programs. In 1926, L.B. Sommers and Doc Abele took over a defunct summer camp formerly run by the YMCA. The camp was situated atop Lookout Mountain, near the point where Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama touch. The staff at Cloudmont became legendary, and the success of the camp was phenomenal. The key was simple enough: total involvement for eight weeks in a world of nature, sports, creative activity, superb food, and the instinctive knowledge of the needs and desires of the growing boy. The men who were campers and teachers at Cloudmont who went on to national prominence in varied fields are legion. Hundreds of parents of Cloudmont boys came to realize what the Sommers-Abele team were capable of in the teaching and development of young boys of school age. And somewhere along the way, these two men also began to realize it. Camp Cloudmont would become the mother-lode of Miami Country Day School. Now, 77 years after the school’s founding and 90 years since the start of Camp Cloudmont, our summer opportunities include coed sports, specialty camps, travel programs, academic courses, and, of course, our everpopular Day Camp. But, one thing remains the same, summers at Country Day rock!

swimming pool policy There are certified lifeguards who are trained in CPR on the pool deck at all times. We employ a large and welltrained Aquatics Staff. All of our staff have received their
WSI lifeguard and CPR certifications. The ratio of campers to swimming instructors is not greater than 1:5. Unless a camper has a doctor’s note and a legitimate reason to not get in the pool (a broken limb, illness, etc.), we expect that campers will go swimming when swim is on their schedule. Every new camper will be required to take a preliminary swim test at the beginning of the week. Campers will be put into groups of similar ability level and given a colored bracelet to indicate their swimming ability: Green: Passed swim test and can participate in pool activities. Red: Did not pass swim test. Day Campers will be taught how to swim in their designated swim time. All other summer programs will participate in an alternative activity during pool time. Yellow: Registered for private lessons. Please read below for information about how to register. Your children need to wear their bracelets all week. Please do not take them off. Multi-week campers can expect to receive a new bracelet at the start of every week. If your child did not pass their swim test and is given a red bracelet, they will be placed in our learn to swim program taking place during their groups designated swim time. This service is provided as part of their Day Camp aquatics offerings. If they are in one of our other Summer Programs, we strongly encourage you to register him/her for swim lessons with our Aquatics staff, which can be set up as small group instructional swim lessons during the scheduled swim activity or as private lessons before or after their program. All students who are registered for swim lessons will be given a yellow bracelet and be allowed to swim with instruction during their program’s scheduled pool time. Call the Aquatics Office at 305-7796778 or email Aquatics@miamicountryday.org to inquire about swim lessons.
hurricane/severe weather Summer is storm season in South Florida. Inclement weather can prevent us from running our summer programs. In the case of severe weather alerts, please check our website for the most updated information. If we should have to close the campus, you will receive a phone call or email from your camper’s Program Director. Parent Orientation Packet | 9

day camp Drop-off time & location: 8:30–8:55 AM, 107th Street Turnaround Pick-up time & location: 3:40–4:15 PM, 107th Street Turnaround Letter from the Day Camp Director Greetings and welcome to Miami Country Day Camp. My name is Ian McNamara and I am thrilled that my 11th year as a Day Camp Director finds me here in my first year at Country Day Camp. I am so excited about what Country Day Camp has to offer and the tremendous strides we are taking to make this the best Day Camp in South Florida. Sometimes I get asked, “What do you get paid as a camp director”. My answer is simple. I get 8 weeks of sunshine, smiles and laughs. Simply put I have the most rewarding and fun job in the world. Thank you for entrusting us with your precious children. They are the reason that we absolutely love what we do and I know that our 90th year of Day Camp at MCDS will bring a summer that is truly unforgettable. I and my amazing staff of counselors and specialists (fungineers) have spent the past 10 months planning and “fungeneering” a summer program that promises to enrich your children with memories to last a lifetime, friendships that will grow and develop and experiences that will change their lives. At Country Day Camp our caring counselor’s help children create new connections and reach outside of their comfort zones to try new things. Skills develop throughout camp, physically through activities like swimming and sports activities as well as social/ emotional things like teamwork in our new Adventure Land, creativity in Arts and Crafts and Music, and selfconfidence in creating and developing relationships. Here is to a summer we’ll never forget. Continues on page 15... Parent Orientation Packet | 13

14 | Miami Country Day School Summer Programs
Every Day Announcements and Mail Daily pictures, schedules, and special announcements will be posted on the Summer Programs website every single day. Make sure to check the site frequently so you and your campers don’t miss a moment of the fun! Hours Camp begins each day with the Morning Blast-Off at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:35 PM. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Drop-off is from 8:30 AM – 8:55 AM and pick-up is from 3:40 PM – 4:15 PM. Our efficient drop-off and pick-up takes place in the Lower School turnaround at the end of 107 Street (see pg. 6 for exact location). Late campers should report to the Summer Camp Office. Please say your goodbyes prior to the drop-off line. We need to be quick and efficient in keeping the drop-off line moving for everyone. It takes a village, y’all! In the afternoon, we will strap in your little ones for safety and you’ll be on your way! Every car that enters the drop-off and pick-up line must display a yellow name-plate in the dashboard. YOU WILL GET THIS ON THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP. This yellow sheet also contains useful information for you about your campers. If someone besides yourself is picking up your camper, please complete the “Permission for Pick Up” located on our website at: summer.miamicountryday.org/summer-forms
A note about sunscreen: It is very important that you apply sunscreen on your campers in the morning and that you teach your children how to apply sunscreen. A note about hair: While we strive to make our camp nature-like, we don’t need to share every part of nature. Lice, while harmless, are not so very nice. We recommend spraying long-hair with hairspray and reiterating with your children the importance of not sharing hats and blankets with their classmates. What to leave at home Jewelry, toys, candy, and electronic devices, including cell phones. We strongly discourage the use of electronic devices during the camp day. If a camper brings an electronic device such as a phone or a video game, we will hold it for him or her in the camp office. Movie Nights Every Friday night is “Dinner and a Movie” at Day Camp. Watch your email each week to see what’s showing and to fill out the weekly permission slip. For the small fee of $15/per camper, your campers get dinner, snacks, games, supervision, and a movie, and YOU get a Date Night! Campers stay after camp and pick up is between 8:30 – 9:00 PM. Movie Night permission forms are available online each week. Check the Day Camp web pages to register. Contact: Ian McNamara, Day Camp Director Location: LS Rm. 102 Phone: 786.449.4564 Email: McNamaraI@miamicountryday.org
Registration This year, Day Camp’s Multi-Week Discounts are only available in bulk purchases. The minimum number of discounted weeks is two. In other words, if you send your child to Day Camp for 6 weeks, he/she is eligible for the 6 week price, which is $385/week. If you should choose to then add a 7th week, you’d have to pay the single week price for that 7th week. Your best bet is to buy in bulk. Uniforms Each camper will be given one Miami Country Day Camp T-shirt and camp backpack on their first day of camp. Additional T-shirts, water bottles, and hats can be purchased in the Camp Office, room 102. You can wear last year’s shirts, too. Closed-toe sneakers are a must, as we will be busy and active every day! Students also need pool shoes for swimming. What to Bring Water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, bathing suit, towel, pool shoes, and big smiles. Pre-K and Kindergarten campers also need a change of clothes in case of emergency and a mat for resting.
