March 19-22, 2019 eXperience...eXplore...eXcel...eXcite...Discover X-Term!
September 2018 Dear Upper School Students, Parents, Guardians, and Friends, Over the past eight years, Minimester has become one of Miami Country Day School’s signature programs, and X-Term is prepared to take it to the next level. Falling under the GATEway umbrella, X-Term will continue the experiential and educational opportunities that Upper School students have come to love since 2011, but will now seek even more ways to reimagine that experience, to provide clear deliverables, and to take our students to new heights - whether they are local or halfway around the world. From a new sister school student exchange opportunity in Helsinki, Finland to the study of architectural design right here in Miami, and studying marine science in Bermuda to practicing holistic wellness here in Miami, this catalog is chock full of experiences for you to peruse - both new courses and the classic options enjoyed by former students. X-Term offers Upper School students the opportunity to explore a whole child passion not typically found in the traditional curriculum. Opportunities exist on campus, in the greater Miami community, and at domestic and international locations. X-Term transports students to experiential endeavors where the real world serves as the classroom and education is reimagined. X-Term supports the Miami Country Day School mission and its core values by enhancing the opportunities each student has to become a lifelong learner. X-Term 2019 will take place from Tuesday, March 19-Friday, March 22. The Upper School will hold an on-campus community service day on Monday, March 18. Any student participating in a travel X-Term, either domestic or international may have an extended X-Term experience - please consult those dates in this catalog. Please note that this week falls immediately prior to spring break. As attendance at X-Term is a graduation requirement, please plan any personal vacations accordingly. I am proud to share this catalog with you which represents the hard work of our dedicated Upper School faculty and staff. Over the past several months, they have created opportunities for your student that truly speak to experiential and hands-on education. When choosing a course, it is important to consider your student’s interests, the fee, whether he/she is a spring varsity athlete, and how you would envision spending this special week. For a complete list of X-Term policies and requirements, please refer to p. 15 of this catalog. We will begin the registration period on September 17 for those students interested in a travel X-Term only. The following week, we will hold registration for the remaining students. Please refer to p. 12 of this catalog for the detailed registration procedure. If you are interested in learning more about a particular course, I would invite you to our X-Term assembly and fair to be held on Wednesday, September 12 during the Upper School assembly period (10:55-11:55am) in the Center for the Arts. Join us to see all the possibilities alongside your student! I am thrilled to usher in this new era of learning in the Upper School. We have great new local opportunities and several new travel experiences. Read through them carefully and select the courses that most fit your student’s interest. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. eXperience… eXplore… eXcel... eXcite: Discover X-term! Sincerely, Glen Turf Director of Global Studies & International Programs

X-Term is a graduation requirement and will appear on the Miami Country Day School transcript. Students will receive a grade of Pass/Fail. Students are required to be in attendance. Failure to do so will result in a loss of graduation credit. A drop/add period will follow the enrollment posting. Upon completion of the drop/add period, X-Term changes will only be honored in the rare cases of an even switch. Enrollment fees may still be incurred after the drop/add period for local X-Terms and as per the cancellation policy for travel X-Terms Spring varsity athletes may not participate in a travel X-Term and should be mindful of X-Terms that travel off campus. Please follow the guidelines stated on each course description as to the appropriateness for spring athletes. X-Term fees will be billed by the Business Office in the fall and must be paid in full by December 14, 2018. Families and students for traveling X-Terms will be required to attend an evening meeting in January 2019. Limited financial aid opportunities are available. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has communicated with families who are eligible to receive an award.
