he Hurricanes women ’s basketball team has something in common with the weather in Coral Gables: As the winter season comes and goes, both keep getting hotter. Following a tough 65-63 road loss against North Carolina to kick off 2012, Miami (15-3, 4-1 ACC) has reeled off four straight ACC wins in monumental fashion as they try for their second straight NCAA tournament appearance. They have gone 10-2 since the start of December and seem primed to make another strong run as the ACC portion of their schedule heats up. The Canes ’ current four-game winning streak includes back-to-back victories against Maryland and Florida State that ref lect how far the program has come since head coach Katie Meier took over. Against Florida State this past Sunday, senior guard Shenise Johnson found a wide open Stefanie Yderstrom for the game-clinching threepointer with 17 seconds. That shot gave Miami a 60-57 win over the Seminoles. The Canes led 41-22 early in the second half, but FSU was able to close the gap and tie things up at 57 in the final minute. Alumna spreads awareness about sexual abuse Candlelight vigil empowers victims

Lauren Book, a University of Miami alumna who was sexually abused by her babysitter for six years, led a candlelight vigil and celebration at the Rock on Wednesday, during which she continued to spread her message that “it ’s OK to tell. ” After travelling 1,500 miles in 39 days, Book made a stop at UM, her seventh stop on her Walk in My Shoes event, a journey across Florida to raise awareness about sexual abuse. The trek, which will take Book from Key West ’s southernmost point to the historic Capitol in Tallahassee, is one of several events coordinated by Book ’s organization Lauren ’s Kids. The walk ends in Tallahassee because of the changes that government legislation has made in regards to sexual abuse, Book said. Book advocates for tougher state laws that protect children from sexual abuse. She said she hopes a relocation is passed this year, which could help victims relocate from the domicile where the attack occurred. Book got the idea for the walk from a National Public Radio report about a similar event for obesity. She decided to do the same but with a focus on child abuse.

which helps prevent sexual abuse through education. “Ninety-five percent of sexual abuse is preventable with education, ” Book said. With education and advocacy as the two themes of her cause, Book also began the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum that will become part of 11,000 kindergarten classrooms throughout Florida in two weeks. Through fun and not fear, she uses role-play and coloring to teach children about the danger of keeping secrets and to find a “trusted triangle ” of safe adults. For older audiences, Book retells her own story and shares statistics. She says that one in three girls and one in five boys are sexually abused before they are 18 years old. “Child abuse is a pandemic in our country, ” Book said. “It is now much worse with the Internet. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. ” The candle light service is only one of many ways that students can aid in her efforts. Others include spreading the word, participating in the walk to Tallahassee or starting a virtual 39-mile walk in one ’s own neighborhood. While Book continues on her journey, the on-campus organization No Zebras supports

her mission by raising awareness about sexual abuse in the school ’s community. No Zebras President Tiffany Caldas emphasizes that sexual abuse can happen to anyone regardless of gender, ethnicity and age. “I believe the attention Book is drawing toward child sexual abuse is absolutely vital, ” junior Caldas said. No Zebras Press Secretary Coral Millican feels excited about Book ’s arrival on campus and looks forward to gaining widespread support. “I am really hoping that our campus shows its support in light of the Penn State tragedy, ” senior Millican said. No Zebras organizes a variety of events throughout the year with a focus on student awareness. Attendees of Wednesday night ’s ceremony also had an opportunity to speak to Book and participants of the walk. As Book continues on to reach her destination by Feb. 21, she does not waver in her school pride and the lessons her alma mater has taught her. “I am proud to be a product of the U and everything I learned there, ” Book said.

The early-morning parking scramble may subside come February with the current expansion of the Pavia Parking Garage. Nestled within the yellow parking zone, the garage will now offer an additional 307 parking spaces inside two new floors designed to better accommodate the approximately 2,500 students who purchased yellow-zone parking permits for the designated area. Last fall, the department of parking and transportation received construction permits from the City of Coral Gables and began to prepare for the project, which comes with an estimated $8,000 to $12,000 price tag per parking space. The garage expansion is an

early response to parking spaces that are expected to be lost to the Student Activities Center, slated for a 2013 completion. “The university is constantly improving our facility, and we may be losing spots as we go forward, ” said Richard Sobaram, the director of parking and transportation. “But our primary goal is that when and if those things go on board, we are a step ahead of the game. ” On Jan. 11, the department notified university faculty, staff and students of regulations being implemented throughout the construction period through an email. “Most of you are aware that we are adding two floors to the Pavia Garage, which will provide an additional 307 parking spaces, ” the department said. “Construction is ongoing and the garage is not currently available. We antici-

pate opening the garage by early February. ” The email also noted the opening of a temporary parking space now used as a replacement for the garage: the pink zone. Mostly in the grass, the zone is expected to house displaced yellow-zone permit holders in anticipation of Pavia ’s reopening. Signs, officers, and parking attendants are being used to direct traffic and assist drivers into the new zone. “On Tuesday, everybody with a yellow-zone parking spot was able to find a spot, ” Sobaram said. “The far end of Serpentine is probably where they found a parking space in their zone. ” However, not all students feel comfortable with the adjustments. “Before construction, parking was much more convenient and easier, ” said Paul Bousquet, a

junior in the school of business and a yellow-zone permit holder. “The new construction will make it easier, but it is absurd that the school wasn ’t transparent with us, and that I have to pay an exorbitant rate for something I was promised and am not getting in return. ” Student Government Present Brandon Mitchell, on the other hand, believes the changes will benefit campus. “If you look at the biggest complaint students have had over the years, it ’s parking, ” he said. “This will go a long way toward alleviating some of those concerns by adding a considerable amount of parking spots. This is a great step forward for the university. ” Ashley Taggart, SG vice president and yellow-zone parking permit holder, believes the addition to the Pavia “is long overdue. ” The original parking spaces inside Pavia Garage are scheduled to open in early February, while the two new levels may open about one month after. Two students pass away during winter break Memorials to be held in honor BY LYSSA GOLDBERG ASSISTANT EDITOR

Two memorial services will be held in honor of Christopher Benchley and Alexandra “Sasha ” Drbohlavova, members of the University of Miami community who passed away over winter break. Benchley, 24, died Dec. 29 after a tragic golf cart accident during his vacation in Montego Bay, Jamaica, according to an article in Planet Princeton. Raised in Princeton, N.J., Benchley had just graduated from UM in December with a bachelor ’s in marine affairs from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. His late father, Peter Benchley, was the author of “Jaws, ”

the novel that was later turned into Steven Spielberg ’s blockbuster hit. “ T h e University BENCHLEY of Miami expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Christopher Benchley, ” said Patricia Whitely, vice president of student affairs. Drbohlavova, 22, was allegedly murdered by a British man during her trip to Costa Rica this winter. “She was a valued part of the campus community, active in our Wesley Center, ” Whitely said in a statement. She was participating in an environmental program at a British-owned organic farm when she was stabbed several

times on Dec. 28, according to the Daily Mail. Drbohlavova was a student from Charles University in Prague and had spent last semester at UM. She had previously lived in the U.S. with her family. Costa Rican police have arrested a man connected with the death, according to reports from BBC News. The suspected killer, Alfred Saunders, is a 20 -year- old mental health DRBOHLAVOVA patient under the United Kingdom ’s National Health Service with a history of sex offenses. He was considered enough of a threat that Interpol issued

an alert to all Central American countries, according to the Daily Mail. Despite this warning, he was granted entry into Costa Rica and later turned up at the eco-farm where Drbohlavova was staying. The owner of the farm, Nic Donati, took pity on Saunders and offered him a tent for the night. Hours later, Saunders allegedly attacked Drbohlavova in her tent and stabbed her in the chest, neck and face over 15 times. Drbohlavova ’s friend, Tomas Johanovsky, told the Daily Mail that she had been part of a scout troop in Prague since she was 15 years old. “She was a very good friend and very dedicated to helping people, ” Johanovsky said. “She was always open and friendly, and never said anything bad

about anyone. She saw the best in people and was one of our most popular leaders. ”

Parking will improve with time

Last year may be over, but one of its nagging issues persists: students ’ complaints about UM ’s new parking system. Commuters ’ frustrations have peaked now that the Pavia parking garage is completely closed during the construction of two new f loors, which will create 307 additional parking spaces. Looking at the glass half empty, parking is going to be hell for the first month of the spring semester. With Pavia closed until early February, students with a yellow-zone parking permit will have three options: leave their homes early to avoid 8:30 a.m. parking madness, park on the grass in the temporary lots or, perhaps most reasonable, just suck it up. Students are seething about the parking dilemma, but they refuse to acknowledge the improvements that will be made once Pavia reopens with more spaces. The new f loors will allow students, faculty and staff to park closer to the center of campus rather than having to park by the BankUnited Center or the Wellness Center. While the department did not begin this expansion to directly address student con-

cerns, the addition will indeed accomodate student needs. We ’re always complaining about parking. With new building projects on the horizon, the availability of parking on campus will become worse, so this project just keeps us one step ahead of the game. The Department of Parking and Transportation is working to improve the system by creating spaces in more convenient locations. Before the spring semester ends, there will be a tangible difference with the added f loors in the Pavia garage, which is definitely something to look forward. The bottom line is simple: have some patience. Yes, yellow-zone parking permit holders might have a long walk to class, but a little exercise never hurt anybody. Before we know it, the renovations will be complete and Pavia will be back in business, better than ever. Until then, students should look on the bright side and know that the wait will be worth it. his is a new y e a r , which means new beginnings, new classes, new relationships NICOLE SPITERI and new CONTRIBUTING memories. COLUMNIST We take the memories that are stashed in the deep channels of our brains and replace them with fresh, relevant ones. It ’s strange, isn ’t it? I think resolutions are tacky. Jan. 1 is usually synonymous with a horrible hangover. We think about how great the prior night was and often remain in bed with sweatpants on for the entire day swearing that

2012 will be the year that we will fit into old jeans, stop smoking cigarettes, bring our GPA up and save money. There is no sufficient explanation as to why the appropriate commencement of these journeys is on the same day that we consider Tylenol and Gatorade our lifeline, but every year it happens: we begin our vain, materialistic journeys that often lead to hollow goals. What are we looking for? This year, I am making a tacky resolution – a resolution to have more care for people. I am making a resolution to remember names, be friendlier, open my eyes to the people around me, return phone calls and make eye contact instead of reading text messages.

After graduation, I want to remember whom I went to certain concerts with rather than what I wore to them. Think of people you love and why you love them. Social media changes the meaning of school vacations

inter break for our generation is drastically different from how our parents once spent theirs. Technology has given us the luxury of smart phones, netbooks, tablets TAYLOR DUCKETT and more while our parCONTRIBUTING ents had bulky desktop COLUMNIST computers, if that, beepers and a land line to talk. With new technology also came the fad of social networks. These networks have forever

changed the face of vacations for college students. When you go to college, chances are the people you call your close friends aren ’t going to live close by. Some may live a few hours away while others live in another state or halfway around the world. For our parents, this was a problem because communication wasn ’t easy. They would play the waiting game until school started and catch up on what happened with their friends during their month apart. Winter break for them meant a vacation spent paying attention to their families or hanging out with their old high school friends. Our generation can do all

that while keeping in touch with new friends. Social media has eliminated the concept of space. With Skype, FaceTime, Tango and other similar applications, a video call to friends miles away can be done at the touch of a button. Facebook is another way to keep track of your friends because chances are that they are going to post pictures or status updates about where they are, who they ’re with, and what they ’re doing. If someone does something drastic like getting a tattoo or changing their hair color, you can find out via social media in seconds rather than it coming as a surprise when you get back to school. Twitter is another new social media

outlet that allows you to see what your friends are thinking in a nutshell. It is the one social network that hasn ’t been invaded by our parents, in most cases, and we all have those friends who tweet every few minutes so their lives are open books. Some parents feel that the technology and social media we have now takes away from the whole meaning of vacation and the fun of seeing everyone after a month of being apart. Located on Washington Avenue, just blocks from the ocean, the newly opened Chalk Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge encourages nightlife lovers to step away from Miami ’s mega-club rendezvous and spend the night adrift in playtime. Its sleek interior boasts the lounge essentials: 12 LED flat-screen TVs, a state-of-the art sound system and innovative cocktails. But the melange of Diamond Pro-Am billiard tables, traditional board games like Connect 4 and, of course, Cornilleau ping-pong tables is designed to create an atmosphere free of inhibitions. Named after Richard Chalk, a managing partner of the venue, the ping-pong-meets-pool lounge was inspired by his childhood pastime. “I ’ve been playing pool since I can remember, ” Chalk said. “At 6, 7 years old, my dad taught me how to play pool and it ’s been a passion of mine since. I ’d rather go play pool than go to a nightclub. ” Inside, private rooms can host a group of up to 15 friends wanting to challenge each other to a one-on-one round of ping-pong or a full-blown tournament. Each room is equipped with the latest in technology, offering cocktail service from an iPad and the ability to control the audio from your iPhone. The lounge was designed with environmental sustainability in mind - Dyson hand dryers, biodegradable cups, waterless urinals and emailed receipts are all in use – and

edge infuses organic ingredients like cilantro leaves, agave and cucumber juice into the menu ’s cocktails. “I just wanted to bring back something that the beach lost and the beach lost its local-driven venues, ” Chalk said. “It ’s now more all about DJs and how much money you have and the entourage you ’re with. ” Originally, pool tables were intended to be the main attraction, but the ping-pong concept was brought in to add a new dimension of entertainment. “Playing pool, you don ’t have to be good, but it ’s better if you are, ” Chalk said. “With ping-pong you can play and smack the ball, it flies somewhere else, and it ’s still a good time. ” Since its unofficial opening in December, Chalk Lounge has collaborated with the nearby Standard Hotel to host larger ping-pong tournaments and highlight the growing trend in Miami. There are now plans for more college-friendly, sports-related events to come. “It ’s definitely different and more of a chill and relaxed place, ” senior Eric Rivera said. “You ’re not stuck trying to get bottle service or trying to get in. A group of people can go and have fun and play pingpong and pool. It ’s actually pretty cool. ” Ping-pong aficionados can purchase a monthly membership for $50, but the hourly rate for ping-pong and pool tables is $15. Several music stars set to shine this year with new tunes BY TYLER COONEY CONTRIBUTING EDGE WRITER

Last year was one of the more memorable years in music history. We saw hit albums like Adele ’s “21, ” Radiohead ’s “King of Limbs, ” the Foo Fighters ’ “Wasting Light, ” Gaga ’s “Born This Way, ” Jay-Z and Kanye West ’s “Watch The Throne, ” the Red Hot Chili Peppers ’ “I ’m With You, ” Coldplay ’s “Mylo Xyloto ” and The Roots ’ “undun. ” And with new releases from rappers Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, Wale and Drake and the debuts of J. Cole, Mac Miller and Childish Gambino, we might be witnessing the revival of album sales. But with nearly all of these artists planning worldwide tours for 2012, the buzz could really just be a sign of even better things to come from the music industry this year. Here are some of the albums and tours to look out for in 2012. Rock In case you ’re still not done with your childhood classic rock phase – when you listened to your dad ’s favorite rock ‘n ’ roll albums (read: I ’m not done) – 2012 sees the revival of many classic bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Producers say Aerosmith ’s follow-up to 2002 ’s “Just Push Play ” should be released in May. Guns N ’ Roses ’ Axyl Rose claims he has “three albums ’ worth ” of song material, while Van Halen is scheduled to release “A Different Kind of Truth, ” the band ’s first album with frontman David Lee Roth in 27 years, in early February. If rock from 30 years ago doesn ’t quite do it for you, a few current bands are coming out with new music this year. Green Day has a “tonne of new songs ” ready to record, and The Killers ’ “Battle Born ” is expected to be out this summer, which should be exciting considering

the success of 2008 ’s “Day & Age. ” Matchbox 20 will also reappear for the first time since 2002 with a new album; however, details have not been released. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead and the Foo Fighters are all touring this year, which should inject some excitement into the struggling rock industry. Also, look out for new albums from Wolfmother, The Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins, Rush, Queen, Muse, Metallica and Linkin Park. Pop

Like most musicians, pop stars ’ tours usually keep them from recording new music and the stars themselves aren ’t as prolific as rappers. However, there are new releases that you should be aware of, like Gaga ’s follow-up to “Born This Way ” (no, I ’m not as excited as you are). Although it is untitled and does not have a release date yet, Christina Aguilera claims that her upcoming album is “heartfelt. ” Adam Lambert and will.i.am will hopefully show improvement on their new albums on March 20 and Feb. 14, respectively, if that ’s your thing. But the future champion of the 2012 pop class is Freddy Mercury and Michael Jackson ’s planned album. Yes, you read that right: Queen ’s former frontman and the King of Pop himself, both gone too soon. Queen guitarist and physicist Brian May received permission to release a set of duets that the King performed with Queen back in the ‘80s; it ’s expected to be released sometime this year. Drool. And here ’s the real reason I write this article: rap in 2012. You might be wondering how

You remember “Watch the Throne, ” right? How about “The Blueprint 3, ” the Jay-Z album that led to singles like “Run This Town ” and “Empire State of Mind? ” Don ’t forget “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family, ” Kanye West ’s critical darling considered by many as one of the greatest rap records of all time. Fast pace masks forgettable plot BY NICKY DIAZ COPY EDITOR

Despite “Contraband ’s ” lackluster plot, the fast-paced thriller manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for 110 minutes. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, “Contraband ” is a remake of the Icelandic film “ReykjavikRotterdam, ” which starred Kormakur. The film focuses on exsmuggler Chris Farraday, who is played by Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg. After his brother-in-law doesn ’t follow through with a drug deal, Farraday has to find a way to repay the drug lord who has turned to threatening his family. Although he has abandoned his life of crime, Farraday must 10

make a trip to Panama to collect counterfeit bills to pay the debt. While it is not as impressive as his portrayal of Micky Ward in “The Fighter, ” Wahlberg ’s performance emanates wit, intelligence and authority. Wahlberg and his co-star Ben Foster, who plays Farraday ’s best friend, outshine the rest of the cast. Their friendship is one of the plot ’s most compelling elements with its drastic changes throughout the film. Although the heist film almost feels rushed at times, the hasty pace allows the audience to accept the plot ’s absurd twists and turns. It doesn ’t give you enough time to analyze what exactly is going on, so you end up thinking the movie is better than it actually is. Overall, the film delivers

several unexpected twists that will leave you feeling like you got your money ’s worth. Although “Contraband ” is entertaining and worth your time, 2012 will definitely see better action movies.

industry ’s stars. But just consider what Jay-Z said last year: “You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. ” Gah. For those keeping tabs, since Jay-Z ’s follow-up to “The Blueprint 3 ” was supposed to be out last year, it seems like that could be a possibility for 2012. West has also announced a G.O.O.D. Music compilation album due out this spring. In slightly less exciting rap news, Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan promises a block album and a new album in 2012, giving Wu-Tang-ers a reason to cheer. Kid Cudi has also announced a fall 2012 release for “Man on the Moon III, ” which sounds exciting since 2010 ’s “II ” received favorable reviews. It has been widely known for a while now that a new Outkast album would be released for the first time since 2003 (unfairly discounting “Idlewild ”), following solo projects by Big Boi and Andre 3000. Well, Big Boi ’s “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty ” was released in 2010 to dazzling critical and commercial success, but we ’ve been waiting on Dre. But fear no longer! The newest Outkast album should be out in early 2012, according to a source close to the band. As it usually goes with rappers, it ’s a waiting game. However, it ’s safe to say the world is getting albums from Big Boi, André 3K, Jay-Z and Kanye West in 2012. Also, look out for releases from Tech N9ne and B.o.B. Aside from the cloudiness of release dates, 2012 looks to be shaping up quite nicely in the music industry. So listen up, enjoy and let me know how these records turn out. Oh, and if you were wondering … Kidz Bop is on its 21st edition, and NOW is on its 41st. No, I won ’t give you those release dates.

Led by an inspirational performance by senior Malcolm Grant, the men ’s basketball team, previously winless in conference play, got exactly what it was looking for Wednesday night at the BankUnited Center. After two tough road losses against conference foes currently ranked in the top 15 of the AP poll, Miami (10-6, 1-2 ACC) defeated Clemson (9-9, 1-3 ACC) in its conference home opener 76-73. “It ’s better to be 1-2 than 0-3, I can tell you that, ” Miami head coach Jim Larranaga said. “I ’ll sleep a little better tonight, maybe three hours instead of none. ” Grant, in addition to dropping a team-high 16 points, picked off a crosscourt pass on the final possession to clinch the victory. It was Grant ’s first truly productive game since returning to the hardwood following the two games he missed to attend his brother ’s funeral. “I feel like I ’m back, ” Grant said. Grant came out Wednesday night with a more relaxed approach after struggling in his first two ACC games with his brother ’s death lingering in his mind. “It still is tough for me, ” he said. “I still think about him all the time, I ’m still crying here and there. ” Shane Larkin connected on both of his free throw attempts with 5.4 seconds left to extend the Miami lead to three before that final play. A Trey McKinney Jones threepointer with the shot clock winding down sparked a 12-0 Miami run that began with seven minutes remaining. Before that shot, Clemson was on a 10-1 run and Jan. 19 - Jan. 22, 2012

the Hurricanes ’ offense appeared stagnant with nothing but dribbles and passes around the perimeter. “We were having trouble getting things going, and that shot gave me and the rest of my teammates a little confidence to finish the game strong, ” Jones said. Miami ’s scoring output was well balanced, with five Hurricanes finishing in double figures. Kenny Kadji, Trey McKinney Jones, Durand Scott and DeQuan Jones joined Grant in that category. Miami ’s ball movement improved immensely from its first two ACC matches with 19 assists on the night. “We didn ’t have very many assists in the last two games … and tonight we get 19, ” Larranaga said. “That ’s a huge difference in your offense. ” Reggie Johnson, despite his seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, only had seven points off three field goal attempts on the night. He did not take a shot in the first half. Larranaga talked with Johnson after the game about getting more looks. Clemson ’s Tanner Smith gave Miami headaches, lighting up Larranaga ’s defense from the outside. He tied a career-high with four three-pointers made and led all scorers Wednesday with 23 points, 18 of which came in the first half. “He ’s a great player. This conference is filled with great players, so on any given night another player can go off like that, ” Grant said. “We cooled him down a little bit in the second half, but I take my hat off to those guys. ” Miami ’s next challenge comes Sunday in another ACC showdown at the BankUnited Center against North Carolina State, a team that already has two ACC wins against Maryland and Wake Forest, but suffered a home loss to Georgia Tech. N.C. State faces Boston College Thursday before traveling to Coral Gables.

SPORTS BRIEFS FOOTBALL The University of Miami football team announced on Tuesday that seven student-athletes had enrolled early for the spring semester and were eligible to begin practicing with the team. The enrolees include quarterbacks Gray Crow and Preston Dewey, offensive linemen Ereck Flowers and Taylor Gadbois, linebackers Raphael Kirby and Josh Witt, and defensive back Ladarius Gunter. The team is set to kick off its spring schedule on March 3, when the Canes will hold their first practice.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Eagle Invite hosted by Florida Atlantic University on Monday, enjoying what turned out to be a successful weekend for the Hurricanes. The team had all six of its singles players compete in championship matches, winning three titles and coming away with three secondplace finishes. Of the three wins, senior Gabriela Mejia won her third straight match at the tournament, defeating teammate Anna Bartenstein. Melissa Bolivar and Lina Lileikite also recorded wins. Make a move with new options UM offers more than 30 club sports BY ERNESTO SUAREZ SPORTS EDITOR

Looking for an opportunity to show off your skills, but not quite on an NCAA level? The Wellness Center may have the answer. It offers several ways for students to get involved in sports, for those who are trying to learn one for the first time and for experienced veterans looking for a new challenge. The Wellness Center offers intramural competitions as well as several different club sports. Intramural events are designed for students who are looking for a short-term, competitive season where they can gather up a group of friends and take on the best UM has to offer. The start times differ for each league, but they all last about a month. “It ’s a good stress reliever outside of the classroom, good form of exercise, ” said Tom Soria, the assistant director of intramurals and special events at the Wellness Center. “It ’s also a good time to go out and create new friends. ” League events include 12

traditional spring sports such as basketball, flag football and softball, as well as wallyball, a hybrid sport that incorporates rules from volleyball and racquetball. There are also special events that students may compete in, several of which only last a day. Events include competitions such as softball and table tennis, as well as a bench press competition and the NFL Combine Challenge, where students try out the tests that National Football League draft prospects undergo. After competing in the shuttle run, a three-cone drill and several skills tests, students can compare their stats to the actual NFL combine results later on. “The idea actually came to us from Student Government President Brandon Mitchell. It turned out to be a great idea, ” Soria said. “Last year was our first year of scheduling it. It was a pretty cool event and we ’re hoping to get an even bigger turnout this year. ” Unlike last semester, where team leaders were required to pass a quiz on Blackboard before their team was eligible to play, they now must attend a captains meeting at the Wellness Center prior to the start of the event. A team representative must attend the meeting if the team

wants to be scheduled. For students looking for a more recreational way to enjoy their favorite sport or seeking to challenge other schools, there are also a variety of club sports offered on campus. There are more than 31 different clubs, which include traditional favorites such as sailing, volleyball and rugby, as well as more unique groups like rock climbing and muggle quidditch. A few other sports may be added, including ballroom dancing, tai chi, boxing and weight lifting. “Many students join a club sport to meet new people or try a new activity. It ’s a good way to get involved and try new things like going scuba diving, ” said Rhonda DuBord, the associate director of recreation programs at the Wellness Center. Many clubs also go out and compete in tournaments against other schools around the country. Last year, the roller hockey team won a national championship and will be honored by the Florida Panthers during a home game later on in the year. TRACK AND FIELD The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in their first indoor tournament of the season this past weekend, coming away with two individual titles. Senior Devon Hill won the 60-meter hurdle, and senior Tarika Williams earned the win in the 60-meter dash. Williams recorded a personal best in the event, finishing with a time of 7.3 seconds. At halftime, I said we ’ve been up 15 or 16 in Tallahassee before and not won. A lot of demons, and they were still on our back a little bit. But [Yderstrom] exorcised those demons with that big shot and [Johnson ’s] great assist. ” Johnson finished with 24 points that
