From the Director of Athletics Hurricanes Fans, Happy New Year! 2015 was a memorable one for Hurricanes Athletics and, as we head into a new year, our athletic programs are poised for an incredible 2016. The past four weeks at The U have been very exciting around our campus. On Dec. 4, our University community welcomed back Mark Richt as the 24th head coach of the Miami Football program. The foundation is in place for our team to win championships and we have the right coach in place to do it. Be sure to follow @MarkRicht on twitter. Coach Richt’s staff is almost complete and I believe it will be one of the best coaching staff’s around. I hope we can count on every member of the Hurricanes family to be in attendance this football season. I want to thank Interim Head Coach Larry Scott for his fantastic work in leading our Hurricanes through a transitional period and I wish him and his family nothing but the very best in their journey. On the basketball court, I can’t say enough great things about what our men’s and women’s basketball teams have accomplished so far this season. They have combined for a 25-3 overall record (12-1 for the men and 13-2 for the women). This is going to be a very special college basketball season inside the BankUnited Center and it is something you won’t want to miss. I want to congratulate our women’s volleyball team on qualifying for the NCAA Championship for the seventh-consecutive season. Our program is headed in the right direction under the leadership of Keno Gandara. Finally, I would encourage all Hurricane fans to join us for the Celebration of Women’s Athletics on Jan. 24 at the BankUnited Center prior to the women’s basketball game against Florida State. The Celebration of Women’s Athletics includes a brunch that will honor Miami female student-athletes, who have excelled on the playing fields, in the classroom and in the community. Mark Richt Named Football Coach

University of Miami Director of Athletics Blake James announced today the hiring of Hurricane alumnus Mark Richt as the 24th head football coach. “Coach Richt embodies the competitiveness, the integrity, the passion, the abilities, and the experience to lead our young men to ACC and national championships and help them become men of character and success long after,” James said. “His passion for the game of football and for his studentathletes is evident in everything he does and we could not be more excited to welcome Mark and Katharyn and their family to Coral Gables.” Richt, born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, returns to his alma mater after leading the University of Georgia football program for the past 15 years, compiling a 145-51 overall record and an 85-40 mark in Southeastern Conference play, winning two SEC championships, six SEC East titles and nine bowl games and finishing the season in the Associated Press Top Ten rankings seven times. “We are blessed to have the opportunity to come to a world-class institution and world-renowned city and play a role in the life of the campus and community,” Richt said. “Returning to The U is truly an honor and I am humbled by the responsibility of leading our storied program. I can’t wait to get started.” University of Miami President Julio Frenk said Richt “understands that at this University, student-athlete success is measured both on and off the field. “I am convinced that we have found in Mark a leader who knows how to win, and who is committed to setting an example for his players and for all of us in the Miami community,” Frenk said. The U’s decision to hire Richt comes as the university works to combine a top athletic department with a world-class education. Last week, UM announced Dr. Steven M. Altschuler was recently brought on board as the UHealth CEO and senior vice president of health affairs. That followed the April announcement of the hiring of Frenk, UM’s sixth president and former dean of Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Richt’s .740 winning percentage ranks fifth-best among active FBS head coaches and he is tied for ninth among the winningest head coaches in SEC history. Richt is one of only seven head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons (2002-05). During his tenure on the sidelines in Athens, 77 of Richt’s players were selected in the NFL Draft over the last 14 years, including eight chosen in the 2002 and 2013 NFL Drafts – the most Georgia players ever selected in a single year. Off the field, Richt places a strong emphasis on academics and 292 Georgia players earned their degrees during his tenure. Richt was the 2013 recipient of the Stallings Award given for commitment to humanitarian and community service efforts, and in 2010 he was named to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees. Prior to his arrival at Georgia, Richt spent seven seasons as the offensive coordinator at Florida State. In his time in Tallahassee, the Seminoles finished in the nation’s top five in scoring offense on five occasions, top 12 in total offense five times, and top 12 in passing offense five times. The 2000 team, which played in the National Championship game against Oklahoma, finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 ypg), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg), and third in scoring offense (42.4 ppg). Richt sent six FSU quarterbacks into the NFL between 1987 and 2000. In 2000, Richt coached Chris Weinke to the Heisman Trophy, and in 1991 he coached Casey Weldon to runner-up for the Heisman. His teammate at FSU, Brad Johnson (now Richt’s brother-in-law), was a Pro Bowl selection for Washington in 2000 and led the Tampa Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl title in 2003. Other Richt pro protégés include Danny Kanell (New York Giants), Danny McManus (Kansas City Chiefs) and Peter Tom Willis (Chicago Bears). Richt played quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes under legendary head coach Howard Schnellenberger. He spent most of his career at Miami as a backup to former Buffalo Bills star Jim Kelly. In one of Richt’s years at Miami, his teammates included Kelly, Vinny Testaverde and Bernie Kosar and quarterbacks coach Earl Morrall. Richt is married to the former Katharyn Francis of Tallahassee. The couple has four children – Jonathan, David, Zach and Anya. Jon was married to the former Anna Cearley, in May 2010.

Richt Names First Assistants to Miami Staff

University of Miami football head coach Mark Richt announced the addition of Thomas Brown, Craig Kuligowski, Todd Hartley and Jon Richt to the Hurricanes’ coaching staff for the start of the 2016 campaign. In their new roles with the Hurricanes, Brown will serve as the co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach, Kuligowski will serve as the team’s defensive line coach, Hartley will accept special teams coordinator responsibilities, while Richt will move into the role of offensive assistant. “I could not be happier to add each of these individuals to our coaching staff,” Richt said. “Not only are they great coaches, but they are great people, who instill the values that our young people will need to be successful in the classroom, in the community and on the field.” Brown begins his tenure at The U after he spent the 2015 campaign on Richt’s staff at Georgia where he coached the Bulldog running backs. During Brown’s time with the Bulldogs, Georgia rushed for 2,513 yards (194.3 yards per game). This past season, he oversaw sophomore running back Sony Michel as he rushed for over 1,000 yards, finishing the year with 1,076 yards. Michel became the 13th Bulldog in school history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season. Prior to arriving at Georgia, Brown coached Heisman Trophy runner-up Melvin Gordon at Wisconsin in 2014. Gordon posted the second-best season ever by a running back with 2,587 rushing yards and 32 total touchdowns. He and sophomore Corey Clement combined to run for 3,536 yards to break the single-season Football Bowl Subdivision record for rushing yards by teammates that had been set the year before by Gordon and James White (3,053 yards). Kuligowski arrives in Coral Gables after spending the past 15 years as the defensive line coach at the University of Missouri. During his 15-year tenure with the Tigers – the longest-tenured position coach in the SEC - Kuligowski coached 24 players to allconference honors. In addition, Kuligowski produced four first round NFL Draft picks since 2009. This past season at Missouri, Kuligowski’s defensive line helped the Tigers rank second in the nation in team tackles for loss. The Tigers also ranked ninth in the nation in total defense. Hartley comes to Miami after serving as the Director of Player Personnel at Georgia. Prior to his appointment in Athens, Hartley worked as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall University. Hartley joined the Marshall staff in March, 2011, and served as the Herd’s safeties coach for two seasons before being named tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in March, 2013. Richt joins his father’s staff for the second time in his coaching career after he spent the 2015 campaign with the Buffalo Bills as an offensive assistant. He spent the 2014 season serving on Georgia’s staff as a quality control assistant. Richt was a threestar member of Clemson’s 2008 recruiting class before he transferred to Mars Hill College to finish out his collegiate career.

Miami Native Diaz Named Defensive Coordinator

University of Miami football head coach Mark Richt named Miami native Manny Diaz as the Hurricanes’ Defensive Coordinator for the start of the 2016 campaign. Diaz, the son of former mayor of Miami, Manuel Alberto “Manny” Diaz, returns home to South Florida with 18 years of defensive experience. During his 18-year coaching career, Diaz has coached in 14 bowl games and has coached numerous all-conference and NFL players at six different collegiate institutions. “I’m very excited about Manny Diaz becoming our defensive coordinator,” Richt said. “I’ve known him for over 20 years and I’ve watched him become one of the best defensive minds in the business. He and our defensive staff will implement a 4-3 attacking style defense. I’m looking forward to working with Manny. I also want to welcome his wife Stephanie and his boys Colin, Gavin and Manny to Miami.” Diaz spent the 2015 season at Mississippi State – his second stint in Starkville. During 2015, Diaz’s defensive unit helped the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record and a victory over North Carolina State in the Belk Bowl. His defensive unit held opponents to just 23.2 point per game and ranked in the nation’s top 10 in redzone defense. “Starkville is a special place and I could not be more thankful for the opportunity Dan Mullen and Scott Stricklin gave my family and I,” Diaz said. “The Bulldog fans are like no other and it has been a privilege to be a part of such a great program, University and community. I wish the MSU players, coaches and fans all the best. Their future is bright. We knew it would take a very unique opportunity for us to consider leaving. God blessed me with a chance to return home, to coach in my hometown and to reunite with family. It is the kind of opportunity that comes along rarely in this business. It was simply too good to pass up. I can’t wait to help Coach Richt build a championship program at Miami.” In 2014, Diaz spent one season at Louisiana Tech and his impact was felt in a big way, mainly by opposing teams’ offenses. In 2014, Louisiana Tech led the nation in turnovers gained (40) with 15 fumble recoveries and 25 interceptions. Prior to his stop at Louisiana Tech, Diaz coached three seasons at Texas (2011-13). In 2010 at Mississippi State, Diaz guided a defense that ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring defense (19.9 ppg), 17th in rushing defense (214.9 ypg) and 17th in tackles for loss (7.0 pg). That was a dramatic turnaround for MSU from the season prior to his arrival. In 2009, the defense finished 71st in scoring defense, 62nd in rushing defense and 89th in tackles for loss. MSU also finished ranked 13th in red-zone defense (.730) and 22nd in turnovers forced (28) nationally in 2010. Prior to his first stop at Mississippi State, Diaz spent four seasons as defensive coordinator at MTSU. Diaz also coached linebackers for two years after mentoring the safeties during his first two years. In four years under Diaz, the Middle Tennessee defense led its conference in sacks and tackles for loss twice, and finished no lower than third in the league in either category during his tenure. In 2009, the Blue Raiders finished second nationally in tackles for loss, stopping more than eight and a half plays per game behind the line of scrimmage. Diaz’s defense also ranked sixth nationally in sacks that season, posting nearly three per game. Before joining Middle Tennessee, Diaz played a major role for one of the country’s top-ranked defenses by coaching safeties in 2004-05 and handling the linebackers in 2002-03 for NC State. In 2005, the Wolfpack finished eighth nationally in total defense, sixth in third-down percentage, and 12th in scoring defense en route to a 7-5 record and a shutout win over South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Diaz spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons at NCSU as a graduate assistant working primarily with the linebackers. During that time, the Wolfpack went to two bowl games and became the first ACC team to beat FSU in Tallahassee. Diaz began his coaching career at Florida State in 1998, working alongside defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews for two seasons. During his stint, the Seminoles won a national championship in 1999 and were national runners-up in 1998.

Richt Names Three More Assistants to Staff

University of Miami head coach Mark Richt announced the addition of Mike Rumph, Stacy Searels and Ephraim Banda to the Hurricanes’ coaching staff for the start of the 2016 campaign. In their new roles with the Hurricanes, Rumph will serve as the team’s cornerbacks coach, Searels will move into the role of offensive line coach and Banda will coach the safeties. “These individuals possess the type of qualities we are looking for in our staff,” Richt said. “Each of these men will play a significant role in our team’s development as we pursue excellence. I am looking forward to working with each of these coaches.” Rumph, a member of the Hurricanes’ 2001 national championship team, returns to his alma mater after spending the past three seasons as the head coach at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. During his three seasons as head coach, Rumph guided the Patriots to three straight Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state playoff appearances and compiled an overall record of 34-6 in one of Florida’s most competitive districts. Rumph wasted little time making his mark on the local high school coaching scene as his 2013 and 2014 squads claimed 5A FHSAA State Championships, defeating its opponents by a combined score of 104-8 in the final game. American Heritage became just the second school in Broward County history to win back-to-back state football championships. Searels, the former offensive line coach at Virginia Tech, Texas, Georgia and LSU, and an All-America offensive lineman as a player at Auburn, reunites with Richt for the second time in his career. Searels spent the 2007-10 seasons on Georgia’s staff. The Georgia native arrives in Coral Gables after he spent the past two seasons at Virginia Tech. During his two seasons at Virginia Tech, Searels’ offensive line helped guide the Hokies to a pair of bowl victories. In 2013, his final season at Texas, Searels’ line enabled the Longhorns to finish 36th in the country in rushing offense and 17th in sacks allowed per game. Trey Hopkins was named first-team All-Big 12 while Donald Hawkins secured a spot on the second team. In 2012, the Hokies offensive line, which was without a senior starter, allowed the opposition to post just 4.1 tackles for loss per game, which ranked tied for third in the country. During his first season at Texas, Searels helped the Longhorns rank 21st nationally and third in the Big 12 with 210.4 rushing yards per game. Searels joined the Longhorns after coaching the offensive line at Georgia for four seasons. He added the duties of running game coordinator in 2009. During his time there, the Bulldogs ranked in the top 25 in the nation in fewest sacks allowed three times, including ranking sixth and leading the SEC in 2009 with just 12. A three-year starter on the offensive line at Auburn, Searels earned first-team All-America honors from both The Associated Press and Football News as a senior in 1987. Banda spent the 2015 season at Mississippi State where he served as a defensive assistant under current Hurricanes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. During the 2015 season, Mississippi State posted a 9-4 record and posted a victory over North Carolina State in the Belk Bowl. The Bulldogs’ defensive unit held opponents to just 23.2 point per game and ranked in the nation’s top 10 in redzone defense. In addition, MSU led the nation in fewest pass plays of 20+ yards allowed in 2015, surrendering only 24. Despite several key injuries to seniors, the secondary ranked fourth in the Southeastern Conference in passes defended with 63. Prior to arriving in Starkville, Banda spent three seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Texas from 2012-15. He filled a variety of roles from scripting practices and organizing scouting reports to assisting with the defensive backs. He also worked with both head coach Charlie Strong and former head coach Mack Brown. In addition to his work on defense, Banda also assisted with the Longhorn special teams.

2016 TRACK SCHEDULE

Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem announced the University of Miami 2016 track and field schedule. The Hurricanes’ schedule is highlighted by the return to New York for the Armory Track Invitational and the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, as well as appearances at the ACC and NCAA Championships for both indoor and outdoor track and field.

They will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 8-9, a meet that Deem always enjoys to host because it brings together Canes of past and present.

“The 2016 season will feature a competitive schedule that allows our student-athletes to compete with the nation’s best each weekend,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said.

“The Hurricane Alumni Invitational is always a special meet for myself and the program,” Deem said. “Not only is it a competitive meet, but it’s an opportunity to reconnect with the alumni that return to campus.”

Miami’s indoor season kicks off Jan. 16 as the Canes travel to State College, Pa., to participate in the Nittany Lion Challenge.

The Canes are slated to compete at the 77th Florida Relays and the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays from March 30-April 2. They will return to Gainesville, Fla., on April 22 for the Tom Jones Invitational and have a trip to Baton Rouge, La., on April 30 for the LSU Invitational as they prepare for the conference and NCAA meets.

The Hurricanes will also compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet (Jan. 22-23), Armory Track Invitational (Feb. 5-6), the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 12 -13) and the LSU High Performance Meet (Feb. 13) in preparation for the ACC Championships in Boston from Feb. 25-27. Two weeks later, the Canes will be in Birmingham, Ala., for the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships. “We are excited to return to New York and compete at the Armory,” Deem said. “The meet always produces great performances and an electric atmosphere.” Miami opens its outdoor season with the first of three home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from March 18-19. The following week, Miami will host the Hurricane Twilight meet on March 25.

“Having our first two outdoor competitions at home will provide our team an opportunity to compete in front of our Hurricanes fans,” Deem said. “It will also provide great preparation for Texas Relays and the remaining outdoor meets.”

WRIGHT RECEIVES HONORS Miami track senior Alexis Wright received lofty

recognition this fall, being tapped into Iron Arrow, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Mortar Board Honor Society. Wright has been a leader on and off the field for the Miami track team throughout her career. The Tampa, Fla. native has competed in both jumps and hurdles for the Hurricanes and has represented the team at prestigious meets such as the Tyson Invitational, Florida Relays and the ACC Championships. A microbiology and immunology major with minors in chemistry and psychology, Wright has registered an impressive 3.645 GPA at Miami. The Roland A. Hammond Scholar has earned Dean’s List honors five times, Provost’s Honor Roll accolades three times and President’s Honor Roll recognition once. She is also the president of the UM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The highest honor attained at the University of Miami, Irow Arrow is not only the trustee of the traditions of the University of Miami , but a living tradition as well. The tribe certainly has taken “A Straight Path to Tradition” as envisioned by its Co-founders, Dr. Bowman Foster Ashe and Francis Spencer Houghtaling. A century-old national leadership society, ODK includes college students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni. Its members excel in a variety of categories, including athletics, academics and campus/community/religious service. Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for superior achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Membership is synonymous with dedication and success. Only a select few students on each campus are invited to join this esteemed society - an honor naming them among the most amazing college scholar-leaders in the U.S. Since its establishment in 1918, nearly a quarter of a million members have been initiated at more than 200 chapters across the nation.

Nine Canes On All-ACC Coaches Team

Nine University of Miami football student-athletes were named to the 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team as selected by the league’s 14 head coaches. Artie Burns (second team), Stacy Coley (second team), Michael Badgley (third team), Deon Bush (third team), Brad Kaaya (third team), Rashawn Scott (third team), Joe Yearby (third team), Danny Isidora (honorable mention) and Justin Vogel (honorable mention) were each selected to this year’s team. Under the auspices of the ACC, the league’s 14 head coaches voted for an All-ACC football team, as well as Players of the Year, Rookies of the Year and a Coach of the Year award. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players and ballots were worth three points for each first-team, two points for each second-team and one point for each third-team selection. The 2015 Coaches All-ACC team is similar to the All-ACC squad announced last week by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA), as the two voting bodies agreed on all of the major award winners with only a slight difference on the overall Rookie of the Year selection (Whitehead finished ahead of Ollison to take the honor outright in the ACSMA voting). Burns received the second-team honor after posting a breakout 2015 campaign. The junior cornerback from Miami, Fla., led the ACC with six interceptions and ranked fifth nationally. His six interceptions this season are the most by Hurricane since Sean Taylor’s 10 picks in 2003. Earlier this season, Burns collected interceptions in threeconsecutive games and became the first Hurricane to accomplish that feat since Taylor did so in 2003. Coley’s second team recognition came following a junior season which saw him lead the team with 645 receiving yards. Coley, who battled an injury throughout the first four games of the year, closed out 2015 on a high note. In the final eight games of the regular season, Coley totaled 15.1 yards per catch and averaged 79.2 yards per game. He finished the year with 645 yards receiving, three touchdowns and posted a pair of 100-yard receiving games. The Pompano Beach, Fla. native’s 634 yards in conference games led the league. Badgley received third team recognition after posting a record-breaking year in 2015 where he connected on 25-of-30 field goals and was a perfect 38-of-38 on extra points. Badgley, who joined the team as a walk-on in 2014 and was put on scholarship prior to the 2015 season, led the nation in field goals per game and ranked eighth in the country in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game. His 113 points currently rank second on the all-time single season list for a UM kicker, while his 25 field goals made are a single-season school record. Bush earned third team honors after he posting a strong senior campaign at safety. Bush finished sixth on the team in tackles with 47 stops. He also totaled 3.0 tackles for loss and posted five-or-more tackles in six games this season. In addition, he helped anchor the nation’s 29th–best defense against the pass. Kaaya also earned third-team honors after he posted another stellar season under center for the Hurricanes. The Los Angeles, Calif. native led the ACC in passing yards per game averaging 274.5 yards through the air. In addition the sophomore signal-caller ranked in the top 50 in seven national statistical categories and is one of just three players nationally to throw for 3,000-or-more yards, 10-or-more touchdowns and have four-or-fewer interceptions. Kaaya closed the regular season with 3,019 yards passing, 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He is just the third player in school history to throw for 3,000-or-more yards in back-to-back seasons. Scott was selected to the third team after he led the team in receptions (47) and receiving touchdowns (5). The senior wide receiver also surpassed 100 yards receiving on three separate occasions, including a 151-yard receiving effort in an overtime win vs. Nebraska. Yearby was named third team following a breakout season where he rushed for 939 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He also scored six rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns. He is one of our four players that started in every game this season. Isidora received honorable mention accolades after he helped pave the way for the Hurricanes’ offense to average 401.4 yards of total offense. The junior from Weston, Fla., also was one of just four players this season to start every game for the Hurricanes. Isidora has made 25-consecutive starts on the Hurricanes’ offensive line. Vogel also took home honorable mention recognition after he averaged 43.0 yards per punt. The junior punter’s 43.0 yards per punt average ranked sixth in the ACC. The Tampa, Fla. native’s 73-yard punt against Clemson was a season long. Vogel also drilled 12 punts over 50 yards and placed 19 punts inside the 20-yard line. Clemson sophomore Deshaun Watson was named ACC Player of the Year. Duke senior safety Jeremy Cash was voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, while Clemson’s Dabo Swinney earned Coach of the Year honors. The Pitt duo of Jordan Whitehead and Qadree Ollison shared the coaches’ overall ACC Rookie of the Year award. Whitehead, a freshman safety, was voted the Defensive Rookie of the Year, while Ollison, a first-year running back, earned Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades.

Knighton Wins FWAA Courage Award

Miami offensive lineman Hunter Knighton is the winner of the 2015 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Knighton, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound redshirt sophomore, returned to action for the Hurricanes this season less than 19 months after suffering a heat stroke that nearly killed him. “It’s just a great feeling that everyone’s hard work in this whole thing paid off,” Knighton said. “I got to prove that you can come back from these sorts of things, and a lot of people who’ve had these types of things happen medically, they want to come back but they’re not allowed to.” On Feb. 24, 2014, Knighton collapsed during conditioning drills. Knighton did not know it at the time, but he had been fighting the flu. His body temperature rose to 109 degrees. He spent 12 days in a coma. He lost 55 pounds. He underwent surgery to repair his paralyzed vocal chords. A Pottstown, Pa., native, Knighton, the second of four children, said his mother took off several months of work to move near him in Florida to help with his recovery. He was later evaluated at the Korey Stringer Institute in Connecticut, which is named for the late Vikings lineman who died of heatstroke in 2001. “This is a tremendous honor for Hunter and I could not be more thrilled that he will be recognized on college football’s biggest stage,” said Miami interim head coach Larry Scott. “Hunter has shown a tremendous amount of courage over the past 12 months and he is truly deserving of this award. The work ethic he has shown to get back on the field and play a major role on our team has been truly inspirational to everyone associated with our program.” Knighton’s ensuing hurdles were as much mental as they were physical. He said he became much more spiritual and learned about resiliency, as he fought through good days and bad days to get back to where he once was. Knighton regained his weight, but simple things were — and still are — more difficult to come by. For example, it takes him longer to take notes in class now, he said, a byproduct of the hit his brain took. Still, the economics major has made significant progress in that area, and he hopes to go for his MBA at Miami upon receiving his undergraduate degree. Knighton, who said he is no longer on medication, returned to the field for the start of fall camp this year, running with the second-team offensive line and looking from the get-go to pick up where he had left off when he last took practice reps nearly two years ago. “It’s like just catching up,” Knighton said. “I haven’t had a full go in the offseason and stuff like that, so that’s my biggest thing, is really getting my strength back and really getting into it. I’m really proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished. This really being my first year in college football, I feel like I’ve put myself in a good spot. Now I just want to accomplish all the goals I set out when I signed to come to UM.” Among those goals is helping Miami win an ACC championship. Knighton saw playing time in all 12 games this season for the Hurricanes, who went 8-4 and 5-3 in the ACC. They close their season Dec. 26 against Washington State in the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Another goal? To be recognized for his play on the field. Knighton, a center, appreciates the attention his story has drawn — he also won the Brian Piccolo Award, which the ACC gives to its most courageous player — but he came to “The U” to make a name for himself on the gridiron, which he will have two more years to do. After fighting for his life, Knighton values that opportunity more than most. “Just getting this much recognition for these awards and stuff for my play on field,” Knighton said of his remaining goals at Miami. “It’s nice to be honored for something like this, but I came here to play football, and I really just want to be recognized for the athlete I am.” The Courage Award was first presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) in 2002. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship. The winner of the award will be included in festivities during Capital One Orange Bowl week and receive his trophy at an on-field presentation. Previous winners of the Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award are Duke offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson (2014), San Jose State defensive lineman Anthony Larceval (2013), Clemson wide receiver Daniel Rodriguez (2012), Michigan State offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr. (2011), Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand (2010), the University of Connecticut football team (2009), Tulsa’s Wilson Holloway (2008), Navy’s Zerbin Singleton (2007), Clemson’s Ray Ray McElrathbey (2006), the Tulane football team (2005), Memphis’ Haracio Colen (2004), San Jose State’s Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo’s William Bratton (2002).

Hurricanes Ranked No. 4, Two Canes Named Preseason All-Americans CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes baseball team checked in at No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s annual preseason rankings, marking Miami’s highest preseason ranking from the publication since 2005. Two Hurricanes were selected as Louisville Slugger Preseason All-Americans by the publication: junior slugger Zack Collins (first team, catcher) and junior closer Bryan Garcia (second team, relief pitcher). The Hurricanes’ 2016 schedule includes home series against three teams ranked in the top 10 (No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Louisville, No. 9 Virginia and No. 22 North Carolina), as well as road series against No. 16 Florida State, No. 21 Georgia Tech and No. 27 Notre Dame. The Hurricanes, who earned the No. 5 national seed entering last year’s postseason run, won 50 games and ended the season ranked No. 6 by Collegiate Baseball. Miami extended its own college baseball record by qualifying for the NCAA postseason for the 43rd straight year; the Hurricanes have not missed the NCAA postseason since 1972. Miami was ranked No. 2 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s preseason poll entering the 2005 season. Collins, a Preseason All-America first-team selection at catcher, was one of the top power hitters in the nation as a sophomore in 2015. Collins, who started 66 of 67 possible games a season ago, hit .302 with 15 home runs and 70 RBI. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native was named to the 2015 AllACC First Team and was a Rawlings third-team All-American. In just two seasons with the Hurricanes, Collins has hit a combined. 300 and totaled 26 home runs and 124 RBI. He has amassed 28 doubles, eight triples and 99 walks in his first two years at Miami. Garcia continued his ascent in the Miami record books with 10 more saves in 2015, finishing with a 6-2 record and a 2.50 ERA in 39.2 innings. The Miami native was named to the 2015 All-ACC Third Team. Garcia enters 2016 ranked fifth in all-time saves at Miami (25) and has a career 2.08 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 91.0 innings. His career record at Miami stands at an impressive 13-6.

Burns to Declare for the NFL Draft

University of Miami junior cornerback Artie Burns announced today that he has elected to forgo his final year of college eligibility and declare for the 2016 National Football League Draft. “After considering all the options, and looking into my future, I feel it is in my best interest to forego my senior year and declare for the NFL Draft,” Burns said in a statement. “I can’t put into words what these past three years have meant to me in my development as a football player but even more importantly as a man.” Burns received second-team All-ACC honors from both the ACSMA (Atlantic Coast Sport Media Association) and the league’s coaches after he posted a breakout 2015 campaign. The junior cornerback from Miami, Fla., led the ACC with six interceptions and ranked fifth nationally. His six interceptions this season are the most by a Hurricane since Sean Taylor’s 10 picks in 2003. In addition, Burns recorded 36 tackles and five pass breakups. Earlier this season, Burns collected interceptions in three-consecutive games and became the first Hurricane to accomplish that feat since Taylor did so in 2003. In 2015, the Hurricanes had seven players selected in the NFL Draft. The Hurricanes have had five-or-more players taken in the NFL Draft on 24 separate occasions since 1980. The Hurricanes have had 93 draft picks since the start of the 2000 season – a figure that is tied for second among all NCAA teams.

David Beckham Visits Miami Soccer Team CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team had the experience of a lifetime on a Wednesday in November, spending time with world soccer superstar David Beckham. The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year runner-up is the focus of a BBC film in coordination with UNICEF where Beckham visits all seven continents in a matter of days and plays a game in each one. The trip to North America took Beckham and the crew to Miami and the Hurricane soccer team. Miami’s coaching staff and the five outgoing seniors, Ava Ambrose, Erin McGovern, Natalie Moik, Jasmine Paterson and Amy Schmidt, met with Beckham in the morning on South Beach to kick off the day. After introductions, interviews and some juggling on the beach, the group came back to the UM campus in the evening. There, Beckham, donning an orange “The U” shirt, met with the full UM soccer team, signing autographs, taking pictures and answering players’ questions at Cobb Stadium. Beckham toured the facility and additional interviews were conducted, as well. The night continued at Brickell Soccer Roof Top for a game of 7v7, with Miami’s seniors and head coach Mary-Frances Monroe on one side, and players from Florida Atlantic on the other. Beckham began the game by playing with Miami, before switching sides for the second half. Following the game, Beckham again posed for pictures, signed autographs and answered questions. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Beckham started “7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund” in 2015 and the film is in conjunction with that effort. The visit to Miami focused in part on how soccer can empower women and provide opportunities. The seven-continent journey conclude with Beckham and some of the most recognizable soccer players in the world playing a match at Old Trafford, the home of Beckham’s former club, Manchester United. Stars such as Michael Ballack, Landon Donovan, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Ronaldihno, John Terry and Zinedine Zidane took part in the contest. Beckham also visited places such as Antarctica, Nepal and Papua New Guinea for the filming. The final product airs on BBC One and around the world. Former Miami Hurricanes team captain Luis “Wicho” Hernandez will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2016 First Pitch Banquet, head baseball coach Jim Morris announced. “There’s been a history of former players coming back to speak at our banquet, and there’s no better person to have speak than Wicho,” Morris said. “He was a team captain, our team MVP and he signed a professional baseball contract. He got his master’s degree at Harvard, he is a very successful businessman and he’s a great supporter of our program. I’m very excited.” To purchase tickets to the 2016 First Pitch Banquet, slated for Friday, Feb. 12 at the BankUnited Center Fieldhouse, click HERE or call the Alumni Programs office at either (305) 284-9517. Hernandez, recognized as a leading businessman in the field of financial services, currently serves as the managing partner of MassMutual Miami. He graduated from Miami in 1994 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and earned a Master of Industrial Psychology from Harvard in 1996. A four-year letterwinner for Miami from 1991-1994, Hernandez was named to the 1994 National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) Super Team in his final season. Hernandez ranks seventh all-time in Miami history in stolen bases (102) and seventh in total sacrifices (38). He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 1994 MLB Draft, and ended his career with a .300 batting average in 224 career games. Miami made it to Omaha, Neb., and the College World Series in two of his four seasons at Miami, including Morris’ first season at the helm in 1994. The Hurricanes also qualified for the CWS in Hernandez’ sophomore year (1992). “No one is more committed and more loyal to this program than Wicho is, and I’m sure he’ll deliver a great message for everyone in attendance,” Morris said. Hernandez’ passion also spills into his community where he is deeply involved in a variety of leadership roles for several organizations. These include YPO (Young Presidents Organization), Orange Bowl Committee, Iron Arrow Honor Society, The South Miami Hospital Foundation Board, Metro Traffic Board, United Way Benefactor, Baptist Hospital Founder and APOLLO Bank Board, among others. Due to his passion in helping the community, Wicho also founded a charity golf tournament, “Wicho’s On The Green.” In its 11th year, the tournament has raised money to help organizations like Autism Society Miami-Dade Chapter, MS South Florida, the UM-NSU Card (University of Miami/Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities), Children’s Cancer Caring Center, Miami’s Lighthouse for the Blind, and many others. “That’s what Wicho best represents, and what I want our guys to strive to become: a well-rounded person, one that’s prepared for life at every angle,” Morris said. “I’m sure most of our players want to play professional baseball, but at the end of the day, most guys don’t play in the big leagues. They need to be prepared for wherever life takes them.” 39

Four Cultures, One Bond

Newcomers from four countries come together thanks to Canes Volleyball The University of Miami volleyball team had a stellar 2015 season, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season. The Hurricanes, who finished the year 21-10, won 20 games for the second straight year and had several team highlights, including victories over No. 20 Purdue and No. 17 Florida State. There were also several individual accolades during the 2015 season as seniors Alexis Mourning and Taylor Scott, as well as sophomores Olga Strantzali and Haley Templeton were named AllACC Second Team. Strantzali and Templeton also garnered AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention recognition. But there was more happening beyond the volleyball court. Four newcomers, three freshmen and a sophomore, came to Coral Gables from four different countries and four different cultures and built a special bond in their first semester as Hurricanes. A Greek native, Strantzali lived with freshmen Anna Haak from Sweden, Lucia Pampana from Italy and Samantha Purnell from Virginia. In just one semester, the quartet have built a friendship that will last a lifetime.

Miami Student-Athletes Boast Strong GSR Numbers

University of Miami student-athletes, posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 89 percent, according to figures released by the NCAA. The rate of success indicates that Miami is above the NCAA average of 83 percent for all institutions. Miami has the 16th-best GSR rate among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. The figures also indicate that the Miami men’s diving, women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, rowing and volleyball teams all registered perfect graduation success rates. “The University of Miami has always been committed to seeing our young men and women earn their degrees,” said Director of Athletics Blake James. “Our 89 percent graduation success rate is a reflection of the hard work put in by our student-athletes and by our academic support systems personnel and the emphasis that our coaches place on education.” The men’s swimming and diving team’s perfect GSR score marked the 11th–consecutive year of 100 percent achievement. The Miami football and men’s basketball teams posted GSR scores of 83 and 93 percent, respectively – both of which rank above the national average. The football team’s 83 percent GSR rate ranks as the 23rd-best figure in FBS. In addition, the men’s basketball team’s record-setting GSR rate of 93 percent ranks as the 14th–best total among FBS institutions. “We set a high standard for all of our student-athletes’ academic and athletic pursuits,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “We are very proud of our graduation success rate and we will continue to strive for excellence. Academic excellence is a major priority to our staff here at the University of Miami.” The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2005-2006 through 2008-09. More than 110,000 student-athletes are included in the most recent four classes using the GSR methodology, as compared to about 79,500 in the federal rate. The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshmen class of 1995. The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.

Miami Opens Spring Practice at New Pool The University of Miami swimming & diving team returned to the newly renovated Whitten University Center Pool for the first time in over seven months Wednesday to officially begin preparation for the spring season. Head swimming coach Andy Kershaw, assistant coach Caroline Maxvill, manager Zach Hinsley and the Hurricanes swimmers marked the occasion by locking hands and taking a celebratory group plunge into the water before their early morning practice. “So many emotions – relief, excitement, anticipation,” Kershaw said. “You look around at this pool and it looks so good…we know it’s a place where we can prepare to accomplish all that we’ve set forth.” The Hurricanes swimmers and divers were forced to practice at nearby pools since the middle of last May while their home underwent a renovation of nearly $1.8 million. “I’m really excited for our team,” Kershaw said. “This is how it’s supposed to be. This is what their college experience is all about. We started by lifting weights this morning, and to be able to come straight here without having to get into a car like we have for the past seven months, it was an emotional day for all of us.” The new Whitten University Center Pool, built by the same company (Myrtha) that builds FINA pools for international swimming and diving competitions, is now six inches deeper as part of the renovation. Other improvements include a new chemical water purification system, new heating and cooling capability, a modern no-coping gutter system, a new deck finish, new lane lines and new pool lighting. The swimming starting blocks were built by Spectrum, while the top of the blocks were a special update from Myrtha. The Hurricanes car-pooled and drove to nearby pools while they waited for their own home to be finished, and even hosted a meet against Princeton at a nearby high school. “I have high standards for this team, and I never could have imagined they would have handled it as well as they did,” Kershaw said. “It is a testament to them as people, but also to them as a team. They bonded together.” “People have down days, and when any one of them has a down day, the rest of them pick that person up. They probably handled it better emotionally than I did, which is just amazing with everything else they have to do.” Miami is only six weeks away from the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C. (Feb. 17-19). The Hurricanes are hosting a trimeet Sat., Jan. 9 (11 a.m.) against Kansas and Rutgers before a Senior Day home meet on Fri., Jan. 15 (4 p.m.) against FGCU. Miami also has dual meets at FAU (Jan. 16, 11 a.m.) and at FIU (Jan. 30, 12 p.m.) before final preparations for the ACC Championships. “We are getting close. These series of meets we have coming up are preparation for that,” Kershaw said. “This Saturday’s meet is going to be a big test, in that we are probably as tired from a training standpoint as we have been all year. They know the challenges – if they can step up and swim fast now, then going forward, they’ll have the confidence to swim fast at any time.”

The Newport News, Va., native is one of seven ACC players on the Naismith Early Season Watch List and one of just 26 non-seniors to receive the honor. The full list of 50 players can be found on the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s website. Motley has helped lead the Hurricanes to a 13-2 (1-1 ACC) mark this season, matching the second-best 15-game start during head coach Katie Meier’s 11-year tenure at Miami. The Hurricanes have been ranked as high as No. 20 in the country by the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and No. 22 nationally in The Associated Press Poll. To learn more about University of Miami women’s basketball, follow @CanesWBB. ABOUT THE NAISMITH TROPHY The Naismith Awards were founded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to recognize accomplished athletes, coaches, officials and contributors to high school and college basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, the creator of the game of basketball, the first Naismith trophy was awarded in 1969 to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The trophy was sculpted by Marty C. Dawe of Atlanta and has become among the most prestigious national honors awarded each year to top basketball players in the nation. The Women’s Player of the Year Award was first given to Anne Donovan of Old Dominion University in 1983. Each year the club’s board publishes the “Naismith Watch” list that is made up of the top 50 players to watch in men’s and women’s college basketball. The organization also releases a list of 30 mid-season Naismith candidates. At the end of the season the Naismith Trophy is awarded to the player of the year in men’s and women’s college basketball. A national voting academy of leading basketball coaches, administrators and journalists narrows the group down to four finalists based on player performance throughout the season. The final four Naismith finalists will make up the ballot and the player of the year is voted on by the group. 51

W. Tennis Ranked No. 13, Two Canes in Top 10

The University of Miami women’s tennis team is ranked No. 13 in the nation in the first 2016 Oracle/ITA rankings released Tuesday afternoon, and the Hurricanes also have a pair of top-10 singles players in the season’s opening rankings. Sophomore Sinead Lohan earned the highest ranking of her career, checking in at seventh in the nation, while senior Stephanie Wagner is ranked ninth in the country. “I couldn’t be happier for them,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said of Lohan and Wagner. “They are incredible representatives of this program and I know they are going to work hard to improve from this point.” The last time two Hurricanes began the year in the top 10 was 2007 when eventual NCAA champion Audra Cohen was first and current Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu was sixth. Miami joins California and Virginia as the lone schools in the nation with multiple top-10 singles players. Six players in the top 10 are from ACC schools. The Hurricanes and Florida are the only schools with a trio in the singles top 25, as Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 21. The sophomore is currently out due to an injury she suffered at the end of her stellar 14-1 fall campaign. “Little bit of a sore spot for me to see Ogando go from unranked at the end of last season to 21st in the country this season and out with an injury,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She has come so far and will remain an integral piece to our puzzle moving forward.” Sophomore Wendy Zhang comes in No. 80 in the country, giving Miami a quartet of nationally ranked singles players. The Hurricanes are one of just eight teams with four ranked players and of those eight, half are in the ACC. Miami, Duke, Florida and Virginia are the lone schools with four singles players in the top 80. In doubles, Wagner joins with senior Clementina Riobueno to form the nation’s No. 22-ranked pair. Wagner is one of just 12 players in the country—four are in the ACC—ranked top-25 in both singles and doubles. Miami is one of six ACC schools in the top 25 of the team rankings, the second-most of any conference. This marks the 12thstraight year Miami is ranked in the top 15 to open the spring season. “We typically don’t pay much attention to preseason team rankings,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “They are simply a starting point. Our focus is where we end up.” Miami finished the 2015 season ranked No. 15 in the nation, the 12th-straight year the team has ended its campaign in the top 15. The Hurricanes also reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Team Championship for the 10th-consecutive season. The Hurricanes have 14 matches scheduled against teams that are nationally ranked to begin the year, including nine at home. Miami has four home matches against teams in the top 25 and three more on the road. 52

He is a great competitor with powerful strokes, consistency and great footwork.” Calvo, of Argentina, has been coached by his father Cipriano, who has coached various players to the ATP Tour, including Carlos Berlocq (as high as No. 37 in ATP), and many others.

@CanesBaseball Releases 2016 Schedule

Highlighted by seven teams that qualified for the NCAA postseason this past spring, the Miami Hurricanes’ 2016 baseball scheduled was released by head coach Jim Morris Thursday. Miami, one of eight teams to qualify for the 2015 College World Series, will play 37 of its 56 games at home inside Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, including half of a challenging 30-game ACC slate. The Hurricanes open the regular season with 13 consecutive games at Mark Light Field, where Miami finished an impressive 36-5 last season. Rutgers (Feb. 19-21), Florida (Feb. 26-28) and Manhattan (March 4-6) will visit Coral Gables in the early going before conference play begins. “My goal is always to make our schedule one of the best in the country,” Morris said. “Last year towards the end of the regular season our RPI was No. 1. Having the ACC schedule, in addition to Florida and the other in-state teams that we play, sets us up to have success for postseason seeding.” Miami will also play a midweek exhibition game in Jupiter, Fla., against the Miami Marlins on March 1. Home midweek games include tilts with FGCU (March 2), Stetson (March 9), UCF (April 13) and FAU (April 20, May 4), as well as defending NAIA national runner-up St. Thomas (Feb. 24). Included in the Hurricanes’ home conference schedule are weekends against defending ACC Atlantic Division champion Louisville (March 18-20), Clemson (March 25-27), North Carolina (April 1-3) and defending national champion Virginia (April 22-24). Miami’s road slate includes weekends at Virginia Tech (March 11-13), Notre Dame (April 8-10), Duke (April 15-17) and Georgia Tech (May 7-9). The Hurricanes end the regular season with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., and a series with rival Florida State (May 19-21) before the ACC Baseball Championship in Durham, N.C. “Our schedule is pretty comparable to last year’s,” Morris said. “You have to play well, but if you do, your RPI will be good at the end of the year. That’s what we’re focused on.” Miami opens its season with the First Pitch Banquet (Fri., Feb. 12) and the annual Fan Fest & Alumni Game at Mark Light Field on Feb. 13. “I think our fans will be excited when they look at our schedule,” Morris said. “Some of the best teams in our conference, and in the country, will be coming to town. There will be some very competitive games at The Light this spring.”
