Calais Campbell Announces $1.6 Million Gift
Calais Campbell, former University of Miami football student-athlete, current NFL Pro Bowler with the Arizona Cardinals and founder of the CRC Foundation, has made a gift of $1.6 million to endow The Calais Campbell Football Defensive Lineman Endowed Scholarship to the University of Miami Department of Athletics. This endowment marks the largest total gift from a former student athlete in University of Miami Athletics history, which includes the recent $1.5 million gift from former running back Ken Hunt. With this gift, the Athletics Department has surpassed $106 million toward the University of Miami’s fundraising campaign known as Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami. “Calais’ generosity will create opportunities for young men for years to come and on behalf of the University, I want to express our gratitude for his commitment to Miami,” said Director of Athletics Blake James. “Calais is an incredible man and along with his family, understands the importance of education and the impact a positive environment can have on a student-athlete. We are excited by the benchmarks set by Ken Hunt and now Calais, which will serve as catalysts for former student-athlete giving in the future.” The Calais Campbell Football Defensive Lineman Endowment will fund a full scholarship annually, in perpetuity, to a defensive lineman on the Hurricanes football team. In recognition for this historic gift, the defensive linemen meeting room in the Hecht Athletic Center will be renamed The Calais Campbell Defensive Line Meeting Room. A fierce competitor, Campbell excelled at the University of Miami. An all-ACC defensive end, Campbell recorded the ninth best single-season sack total in Hurricanes history with 10.5, on his way to being named the Hurricanes’ 2006 team MVP. Campbell was a four-year letter winner, and graduated in 2008 with a degree in advertising and marketing. “While running through the smoke as a Miami Hurricane will always be one of the great honors of my life, I am equally as proud of the education I received while a Hurricane student-athlete” said Calais Campbell. “Through my parents, I learned the value of earning a degree and through the University of Miami I was able to achieve it. The University of Miami continues to strive for the best in both academics and athletics, and it’s my honor to be a small part of that effort.” Campbell was himself the named recipient of an endowed scholarship from Robert and Connie McGee, longtime supporters of UM athletics. Campbell and the McGees formed a strong bond during his time at the University, and they remain close today. “The McGees were very inspirational in my life and I’m honored to now stand beside them as a fellow donor to Hurricane Athletics” said Calais Campbell. “I hope that through this gift I can inspire others to think about how they can continue to positively impact the lives of Hurricane student-athletes, just as the McGee family has done for many years.” “Our family has enjoyed attending University of Miami football games for many years. When we lost our son, Shane, at age 13, we created an endowed football scholarship in his memory,” Bob and Connie McGee said. “Our first recipient was Calais Campbell. It was a wonderful experience to meet Calais as an incoming freshman and to watch him grow as a player and a man. Our relationship with Calais has helped us both understand the impact that a scholarship can have on a young person’s life. Calais is an exceptional young man. We are so pleased that he has decided to carry on the tradition of investing in the young men who will play football at University of Miami by giving an endowed football scholarship. We feel that our family’s scholarship has come full circle,” they added. In 2008, Campbell was selected 50th overall in the second round of the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals, and has continued to excel in the NFL, becoming a Cardinals team leader and being named to his first Pro Bowl. Off the field, Campbell has twice won the Cardinals “Man of the Year” award for his work in the Arizona community through his CRC Foundation. The University Of Miami Department Of Athletics fields 17 varsity sports with over 400 student-athletes. Over 258 student-athletes receive athletic scholarship dollars. For scholarship endowment information, contact Alfonso Restrepo, Assistant Director of Development for Major Gifts, at 305-284-6705.

$1 Million Gift Announced for Endowment Fund
The University of Miami Athletics Department announced today a gift of $1 million from UM Trustee and alumnus Robert Mann to create the Robert A. Mann Endowed Fund for the Department of Athletics. This endowment gift, which will support Hurricanes Football, Basketball, Baseball and emergency needs for all student-athletes as determined by the Director of Athletics, is in support of Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami. With this gift, the Department of Athletics has raised over $104 million towards its Momentum2 goal of $125 million. “Thank you to Bob Mann for his longstanding generosity, commitment and leadership to University of Miami Athletics,” said UM Director of Athletics Blake James. “Bob is a trusted friend to our program and we are grateful that our dedicated student athletes will forever benefit from Bob’s generosity and leadership.” A Cleveland native and longtime Golden Cane, Mann has generously supported scholarships and facilities in both Athletics and at the School of Communication. Mann, B.A. ’70, serves on the University’s Board of Trustees’ Athletics Advisory Committee and is the Chair of the Visiting Committee of the School of Communication. Bob’s past contributions to Athletics include supporting the construction of Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, the Robert A. Mann Auditorium in the Schwartz Center for Athletics Excellence and many years of generous discretionary support for UM Athletics. Recognized for his unwavering commitment to his alma mater, Mann was named Henry King Stanford Alumnus of the Year in 2008. With a goal of raising $1.6 billion by 2016, Momentum2 comes on the heels of the institution’s record-breaking Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami, which concluded at the end of 2007 and raised more than $1.4 billion for endowed chairs and professorships, scholarships, facilities, academic and medical programs, and other initiatives. www.miami.edu/campaign

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete or their friend or family member a benefit not authorized by the NCAA. The receipt of a benefit is not in violation of NCAA legislation if it can be demonstrated that the same benefit is available to the general student population or a particular segment of the student body. There are many types of benefits that the University of Miami provides to our studentathletes that are not extra benefits. General academic counseling and tutoring services are available to student-athletes. The institution may also provide student development and career counseling, the use of computers, meals, transportation, school supplies, and other services and benefits. The University of Miami has been in the media lately for extra benefits, and it is of the utmost importance that our boosters and institutional employees refrain from providing extra benefits to our student-athletes and prospective studentathletes. Here are a few examples of extra benefits: • • • • • • • • •

It is important for institutional employees and boosters to refrain from providing benefits or services to student-athletes or prospective student-athletes, and instead contact the compliance office with any questions concerning what benefits you may provide these individuals. We ask that all Canes fans and supporters assist us in following the guidelines listed above. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. Sincerely,

Shakima Wimbley Named ACC Women’s POTW GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shakima Wimbley was named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week following a strong start to the 2015 Indoor Track & Field season.
Competing at the Nittany Lion Challenge in State College, Pa., Wimbley won the women’s 200 meters with a personal-best time of 23.35 seconds that ranks fourth on Miami’s all-time indoor list and second in the NCAA this season. The gifted sophomore also anchored Miami’s 4x400m relay to victory with a time of 3:35.93, the second-fastest time in the country this season.
All-America honors in the 200m and was honorable mention in the 4x400m. “Receiving this honor motivates me to get better. I had an awesome season last year, but it wasn’t the best season I could have had. There were people who finished ahead of me and I am looking to continue to improve and get as close to the top as I can.” Miami is back in action next weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, competing on Jan. 23-24 in Lexington, Ky.
“It amazes me every time I get recognized like this,” Wimbley said. “Opening up with a strong time like I did this past weekend is great. It really boosts my confidence and gets me excited for what is to come later this season. I know I still have a lot of work to do, but I am definitely excited about the future.” A freshman sensation a year ago, Wimbley won gold medals in the 200m and the 4x400m relay at the ACC Indoor Championships en route to being named the ACC Freshman of the Year for the 2014 indoor season. Wimbley, who was a second team Indoor All-American in 2014, posted the fifth-fastest indoor 200m time in UM history (23.56). “Shakima had a very successful freshman year and I was very pleased with her opener this season, but what I was really impressed by was her determination and her work during fall training,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “She really committed herself to her training and getting stronger in the weight room this fall and it showed in her performances this past weekend.” The standout sprinter was equally impressive in her 2014 outdoor campaign, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors for the outdoor season and claiming ACC Outdoor titles in the 200m and 4x100m. It’s always fun to know we’re right there, and it’s time to open our season,” Morris said. “To have a guy Mike speak is even better - he represents our community not only as a Marlin, but as a Cuban-American and a college guy who has been successful.” Hill has served in multiple roles in the Marlins’ player development arm since joining the organization in 2002, rising through the ranks to general manager and eventually president of baseball operations. He spent five seasons in Tampa Bay and three seasons with the Colorado Rockies. “We’re honored to have Mike speak at our banquet,” Morris said. “He’s a great representative of college baseball and what it can do for you. He rose to his position very quickly at the age of just 43.” Fans are encouraged to reserve banquet tables and tickets, which are expected to sell out quickly. Baseball Ranked No. 10 in Perfect Game top 25 The University of Miami picked up its first top 10 ranking of the preseason this week, making its debut in Perfect Game’s top 25 at No. 10. The ranking was Miami’s third top 15 mark of the preseason; Collegiate Baseball Newspaper slotted Miami at No. 14 in its preseason poll released in December, while D1Baseball rated Miami No. 15 in its rankings released Monday. Miami’s No. 10 ranking continued an impressive stretch of preseason honors for the Hurricanes. Perfect Game named sophomore catcher Zack Collins to the Preseason All-America first team, while closer Bryan Garcia was a third-team selection. Miami, which finished 44-19 in 2014 and earned one of 16 NCAA postseason Regional host sites, ended the season atop the ACC with a 24-6 record in conference play. Head coach Jim Morris’ team also took home their second ACC Regular Season Championship in program history en route to a top seed at the ACC Baseball Championship in Greensboro, N.C. The Hurricanes, who in 2014 extended their postseason streak to a college baseball-record 42 consecutive years, return a number of key contributors from last season both on the mound and in the field. Collins was named 2014 Baseball America National Freshman of the Year after a prolific first season, lefthander Andy Suarez was the highest-drafted college player to return to school nationwide (second round, Washington Nationals), while Garcia earned NCBWA All-America honors after delivering a dominant season as the team’s closer.

@CanesRowing Announces 2015 Spring Schedule
The University of Miami rowing program will compete in six events in their 2015 spring season, head coach Dave Sanderson announced Wednesday. The Hurricanes will row in six events this spring, culminating with a trip to the ACC Championships in May. Sanderson believes the competitive schedule will help Miami grow as it looks to peak at the conference regatta. “I am excited about our spring schedule for 2015,” Sanderson said. “We are especially focused on racing the ACC Championship on May 15-16. The schedule is designed to give us a range of racing opportunities throughout the season with a mix of dual races, as well as larger, multi-day regattas. Each event is important and the schedule, as a whole, will help to develop our speed so we can be our fastest at ACCs in May. “ Miami will open the spring with a scrimmage against UConn on March 18. The scrimmage against the Huskies will be the Canes’ only racing at home in the 2015 season. Three days later, the Hurricanes will race against Columbia at a neutral site in Fellsmere, Fla. The Canes will make another trip to the San Diego Crew Classic in 2015, racing on March 28-29. A year ago, Miami’s 1V8+ placed second in the Women’s Collegiate Invitational Petite Final, while the 2V8+ placed sixth in its final race on Mission Bay. Miami opens the month of April with a trip to New Jersey, competing at the Knecht Cup on April 11-12. The Hurricanes will have their final race before the ACC Championships on April 25th at UCF and then will spend the next few weeks training for the ACC Championships on May 15-16 in Clemson, S.C. The Canes placed sixth at the 2014 ACC Championships, the first two-day conference regatta in ACC history. But a strong 2014 fall season that included an 11th place finish in the Club 4+ event at the Head of the Charles and a solid showing at the Head of the Hooch has the Hurricanes looking to continue to improve heading into the 2015 season. @HurricaneTennis Wins 28 Matches on Opening Weekend CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team began its spring season Friday, Jan. 16 at the friendly confines of the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes welcomed No. 22 Texas, No. 44 Utah and No. 11 Vanderbilt to Coral Gables for the Miami Spring Invite, a three-day event than ran through the 18th. “These are the teams that we need to be playing if we want to get better,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “If we are trying to a line ourselves to be going deep in the tournament, we need to be playing these schools early in the season with a week of practice under our belt. There was some pretty amazing tennis for three days and that’s what we needed.” The Hurricanes began play Friday by facing Texas in a trio of doubles matches and Utah in a fourth. The Hurricanes went 3-1, including Yolimar Ogando winning the first match of her college career, playing with fellow freshman Silvia Fuentes. Miami then took on Utah in singles, playing nine matches against the Utes and the Hurricanes were dominant. The final tally was 8-1 in favor of Miami, with all eight victories coming in straight sets. Freshman Sinead Lohan, ranked No. 39, put forth a superb effort for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jena Chang in the third spot. Overall, Miami went 11-2 on the first day of the season. “Had a good showing today in singles and doubles,” Yaroshuk-Tews said after day one. “. . . Overall I think we had a productive start. I’m happy to see our entire team healthy and competing.” Saturday began with Miami squaring off against Vanderbilt for a trio of doubles matches, two of which went Miami’s way. The nation’s eighth-ranked doubles pair of senior Lina Lileikite and junior Stephane Wagner rolled to 6-2 victory in their match against Frances Altic/Astra Sharma. In singles action, Miami played five matches against Texas and two against Utah. Four of the matches against the Longhorns were Miami victories, including an impressive showing by junior No. 88 Clementina Riobueno in the fourth spot. She defeated Lana Groenvynck, 6-0, 6-1. Sinead Lohan’s 6-3, 7-6 victory over Texas’s Ryann Foster drew rave reviews from her head coach. “I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen two freshmen playing that type of tennis this early in the season,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Lohan really unveiled a side of her game that I hadn’t seen since she’s been here. She really dug her heels in [during] the second set and she didn’t go away.” Against Utah, Miami won one match and the other was unfished. The Hurricanes posted an 8-2 record as whole on Saturday through doubles and singles. On the third day, Miami began by splitting four doubles matches with Utah. The No. 15 duo of senior Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno battled for a tough 7-5 win over Sarah Richter/Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa. In singles play, Miami had eight matches against Vanderbilt and won six of them, while freshman Judith Bohnenkamp picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win in the lone singles match against Utah. In addition to Bohnenkamp, all four of Miami’s other freshmen won, with Lohan, Ogando, Zhang, and Fuentes all doing so in straight sets. “I was really happy with the girls’ performances today,” Yaroshuk-Tews said of her team as a whole on day three. “I think that everybody down the line did a great job. We knew that we needed come out and set a positive tone today against Vanderbilt because they are a team that we could realistically see in the NCAA Tournament, so it was important for us to go out and have a great showing.” Miami’s 9-4 record on Sunday gave the Hurricanes an impressive 28-8 showing overall, including a 20-4 record in singles play. Sinead Lohan and Wendy Zhang, ranked No. 58, both went 6-0 overall, with three wins together as a doubles pair. The Hurricanes will be back in action Jan. 24-25 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for the ITA National Indoor Kick-Off Weekend. Miami will be hosting No. 30 Florida State, UNF and No. 53 USF. SCHEDULE/RESULTS (14-4, 4-1 ACC) DATE
Meier Gets 250th Win in @MiamiWBB ACC Opener CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – The last thing Miami coach Katie Meier said in the pregame address to her players was that she would not be surprised when they beat Notre Dame. And she wasn’t. Adrienne Motley scored a career-high 32 points, Jassany Williams blocked a school-record nine shots and the Hurricanes snapped No. 4 Notre Dame’s record-tying 30-game road winning streak by running out to a big lead and then pulling away again late to upset the Fighting Irish 78-63 on Thursday night. “We knew that we would have an opportunity, and then we would have some adversity, and then we would have to come back,” Meier said. “So we scripted the game in their minds.” That the Hurricanes did, right down to the perfect ending. Miami led 40-20 at the half, saw the lead whittled to six and then closed the game on a 23-14 spurt. Motley made 13 of 19 shots, Suriya McGuire added 11 points and Williams added six points and eight rebounds to her nineblock night. Plus, Miami’s bench outscored Notre Dame’s 21-7. “It just so happened I had 32,” Motley said. “But it was everybody tonight.” Jewell Loyd scored 27 points for Notre Dame (14-2, 2-1), which got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Brianna Turner. Notre Dame’s last road loss was March 6, 2012, at Connecticut, which set the Division I women’s record with 30 straight road wins from 2008-10.

Notre Dame was 21-0 in ACC regular-season and tournament games since joining the league, not including an NCAA tournament win over Maryland, plus lost to an unranked opponent for the first time in 62 games going back to Feb. 12, 2012, against West Virginia. “You never like to lose, but we’re just so darn young sometimes that we needed maybe a kick in the pants to kind of say we need to come out ready,” said Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw. “I don’t know mentally what they were thinking before the game but we were uncharacteristically bad in the first half. Credit their defense, that really set us back on our heels.” The Hurricanes went on a 20-4 run to end the half, with Motley and Necole Sterling combining for 16 of those points. Notre Dame shot just 24 percent in the first 20 minutes, its six field goals matching the total Motley had herself by intermission. Notre Dame, which came in averaging nearly 86 points per game, roared back. Turner was almost unguardable down low after halftime, and her three-point play with 8:28 left got the Fighting Irish within 55-49. But every time the Hurricanes looked to be on the ropes, they would counter. Miami hit a three-pointer and to push the lead back to nine and had a three-point play about four minutes later to extend the edge to 69-55. MIAMI HURRICANES POSTGAME NOTES This is Miami’s first ever win over a team ranked in the top four of both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. The last time the Hurricanes defeated a top-five opponent was with a 69-65 victory at home over No. 5/4 Duke Feb. 28, 2013. The Hurricanes are the first team to defeat Notre Dame in ACC play and the Fighting Irish entered the game ranked first in the RPI. Miami has defeated a top five opponent in three of the past four years after having never done so previously. Miami limited Notre Dame to its lowest first half field goal percentage of the season, 24 percent (6-of-25) and in the game Miami’s bench outscored Notre Dame’s 21-7. Adrienne Motley scored a career-high 32 points. Her previous high was 27 at North Carolina (2/2/14) and that was the last time Miami beat a ranked opponent. Motley is the first Hurricane to score 30-plus points since Riquna Williams had 34 in a win vs. No. 5/5 Maryland (1/12/12). Motley set a career high with 13 made field goals (previous 11, vs. Georgia Tech, 2/9/14) and her 36 minutes played matched her career best (previous vs. Georgia Tech, 2/9/14).

Savanah Leaf Signs Pro Contract
All-American & ACC POTW joins Sariyer Belediyespor in Turkish First League All-American Savanah Leaf signed a professional contract with Sariyer Belediyespor in the Turkish First League. Leaf, who graduated in December, becomes the first Hurricane to sign a professional contract since the arrival of head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara prior to the 2013 season. Turkey’s First League is one of the most competitive in the world, featuring standouts Yeon Koung Kim, Jordan Larson and Eleonora Lo Bianco among its players. “We are excited for Savanah,” Gandara said. “She was one of the top players in the country this year and we look forward to watching her continue to grow and develop as she takes the next step in her volleyball career.” Following a stellar senior season, Leaf was named to the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association AllAmerica Second Team, becoming the third Hurricane in program history to earn a spot on an AVCA AllAmerica Team. Lane Carico was Miami’s first AVCA All-American, earning third team honors in 2010 and second team honors in 2011. Emani Sims, who was named AVCA All-America honorable mention in 2014, was a third team selection in 2012. Leaf was selected to the AVCA East Coast AllRegion Team after an outstanding season that resulted in being named ACC Player of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team. The San Anselmo, Calif., native finished the season with 4.65 kills/set, ranking 12th in the country and atop the ACC. A talented outside hitter, she led the team in kills (502), kills/ set (4.65) and points (5.33), while ranking second in attack percentage (.312), service aces (27) and digs (266), and third in blocks (83). She also led the Canes with 13 double-doubles during the 2014 season. A Preseason All-ACC pick, Leaf was a three-time ACC Player of the Week during the 2014 season. She also joined an elite club at the University of Miami, surpassing 1,000 kills for her career. Leaf, who ranks fifth in program history with 1,194 kills, also set the 33

program record for kills in a match and kills in an NCAA Tournament match when she recorded 31 kills in a five-set victory over UCF in the first round of this year’s tournament. Despite playing just three years at Miami, Leaf’s name is all over the Hurricane volleyball record book. Her 4.65 kills/set this season ranks second-best in a single season in program history. Leaf’s 575.5 points in 2014 rank second in UM history, while her 5.33 points/set are third-best in a single season. Leaf finished her career ranking fifth in program history with 1,194 kills and ranks ninth in program history with 87 service aces. A standout on and off the court, Leaf was named to the 2014 Capitol One Academic All-America Second team. A stellar student that was named First Team Academic All-District earlier this year, Leaf has earned a 3.89 cumulative GPA while pursuing a double major in psychology and human development. She earned distinction on the President’s Honor Roll in Spring 2013 for her perfect 4.0 semester GPA, as well as the Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75 GPA), Dean’s List Honor Roll (3.5 GPA), Athletic Director Honor Roll (3.2 GPA) and UM’s Book Buster Club (3.0 GPA) in Spring 2012, Spring 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. Leaf is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Furthermore, she was named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team and is a two-time ACC Honor Roll student-athlete. The Hurricanes (22-9, 14-4 ACC) reached the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 8 Florida in a hard-fought four-set battle. Miami reached the second round for the third time in program history. The Canes, who are 3-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, earned their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2011 when they beat UCF in five sets on Dec. 5. The win was also the first NCAA Tournament victory in head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara’s head coaching career. SEPTEMBER 25, 2014

Scavo to Visit NFL Scouting Combine
The Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS) have selected University of Miami Head Athletic Trainer Vinny Scavo as a visitor to the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind. Scavo, who rejoined the Miami athletic training staff as its Associate Athletic Trainer and head football athletic trainer prior to the start of the 2011 season, was one of three head athletic trainers throughout college football that were invited to this year’s NFL Scouting Combine. “This experience will provide future Hurricanes with a better idea of what it takes to be successful at the NFL Combine,” said Dallas Cowboys head athletic trainer Jim Maurer, who selected Scavo to join the NFL Combine. During his 30-plus years in athletic training, Scavo has worked with athletes at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. “Vinny is one of the few athletic trainers that has experience at all levels of competitive sport,” Maurer added. The workshop will provide Scavo the opportunity to gain further educational experience in athletic training, while observing some of the best practices for success at the NFL’s primary scouting event. “I could not be more excited to travel to the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine,” Scavo said. “This is a wonderful opportunity and I looking forward to learning from some the nation’s elite athletic trainers as to what it takes to be successful at the NFL Scouting Combine. This experience will not only serve as a benefit to my staff, but also the football program at the University of Miami.” The 2015 NFL Scouting will be held Feb. 17-23 inside Lucas Oil Stadium and will feature the nation’s top draft eligible players. “Through this educational opportunity provided by PFATS, Vinny will be able to see some of the best practices for success at the NFL combine first hand, which will significantly benefit the University of Miami football program,” said head coach Al Golden. “Our student-athletes have known for a long time that Vinny is one of the best athletic trainers in Division I college football,” Golden added. “His work ethic and commitment to our student-athletes is without question. This recognition is very well deserved and it could not be given to a better person.”
