#OperationSellout was a rousing success as the Miami Hurricanes handed Duke the third-worst loss for a No. 1 team in AP Poll history. When the final horn sounded, the BankUnited Center capacity crowd stormed the court in celebration.

Legendary Ron Fraser Passes Away

Ron Fraser, nicknamed the “Wizard of College Baseball”, who guided the Miami Hurricanes baseball program for 30 seasons, died Sun., Jan. 21 at the age of 79. Fraser, who led the Hurricanes to the 1982 and 1985 College World Series titles, coached Miami from 1963-92, amassing a 1,271-438-9 record and ended his career as the third-winningest coach in NCAA history. He was the NCAA Coach of the Year four times while at the helm at ‘The U’. “Coach Fraser was like a father to me,” University of Miami head baseball coach Jim Morris said. “He was the most influential man in my career and a great friend who I knew I could always rely on. He played such a significant role in the history of college baseball and of this program and we will always be a tribute to him.” During the early 1970s, Fraser developed a friendship with George Light, which forever changed the face of college baseball. Mark Light Stadium was built and was considered the best college stadium in the country, starting a trend in college baseball facilities that would change the game forever. “Coach Fraser had a tremendous impact on the baseball program at the University of Miami at a pivotal time in our history,” UM President Donna E. Shalala said. “His love of the sport and the program can still be felt, years after this legendary tenure at ‘The U’.” Fraser’s mastery of marketing the game helped develop the sport into a major player in college athletics. From ESPN covering games in Miami to his “Dinner on the Diamond”, from creating the batgirls with “The Sugarcanes” to developing a mascot, The Miami Maniac, Fraser made Mark Light Stadium the premier family entertainment spot in South Florida. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Coach Fraser,” UM Interim AD Blake James said. “The impact he had on our University, on college baseball and on the game itself worldwide is immeasurable. His legacy will live on through the

lives of those whom he touched and through the innovations he incorporated into America’s pastime.” Fraser led Miami to 20 consecutive NCAA Regional berths and 12 College World Series appearances. More than 100 of his former players went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball. In 1990, he was named “Coach of the Decade” for the 1980s by Collegiate Baseball. Fraser also enjoyed international success in leading the U.S. National Team to a Silver Medal at the 1987 Pan American Games. He also served as head coach of the first U.S. Olympic baseball team in 1992. Ronald “Ron” George Fraser came to the University of Miami in 1962 after serving as the coach of the Dutch National Team for three years, winning three European Champions. His international reputation earned him the job at Miami, succeeding Whitney Campbell. Ironically, Fraser came on the radar of UM officials through the television show, “What’s My Line?”, as Fraser routinely stumped the panel. A three-year letterwinner at Florida State from 1954-56, Fraser’s uniform No. 1 was officially retired on April 24, 1993, at Mark Light Field. He was a 26-time Coach of the Year and a member of 10 Halls of Fame, including the inaugural class of the College Baseball Foundation Hall of Fame in 2006. RON FRASER WIZARD FUND In recognition of his lifetime accomplishments and a distinguished legacy of helping others, the University of Miami has created the Ron Fraser Wizard Fund to honor the Hall of Fame coach with a bronze statue to be placed at Alex Rodriguez Park. Friends and fans of the man nicknamed can make contributions to the Ron Fraser Wizard Fund by clicking here. All contributions are tax-deductible. UM Students ‘Stand With The U’

By David Villavicencio Student support is an integral part of college athletics. Beyond a team’s success on the field or court, a program is often recognized for its loyal fan support. College basketball fans recognize Duke’s Cameron Crazies as much as they recognize the program’s four national titles. College football fans knew about Texas A&M’s 12th Man well before they had ever heard of Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. At Miami, the student body’s support of athletics has not always matched the university’s success in various sports. But that trend of fairweathered student support at “The U” is beginning to change. “We got off to an awesome start with the Bethune-Cookman game,” said, Brian Bowsher, Miami’s digital media strategist. “I was pretty blown away with the student turnout for that.” The students followed the season opener with several other strong showings. They were out in full force on Oct. 20, as the Hurricanes hosted in-state rival Florida State. More than 9,000 students (9,800) cheered on the Canes against FSU, setting a student attendance record for Sun Life Stadium. The increased fan support continued during basketball season, with students flocking to the BankUnited Center to support the Canes in big wins over Michigan State (1,290 students) and Maryland (1,227 students). “The growth that we’ve seen from today going back to the early stages of the season has been big,” Bowsher said. “Walking into the building for the first couple of games, you felt like ‘this is a nice arena with decent crowds but not a lot of life.’ But what we saw at the Maryland game and the Michigan State game and what we’re expecting for Duke is incredible. Hopefully the students have a great time. For those who can’t get in, hopefully they can experience it for the Florida State game.” Javier Hernandez, 21, is a junior at Miami and he has seen the fan support grow exponentially since he first enrolled at Miami three years ago. “It’s night and day, from freshman year to now, it’s completely different,” Hernandez said. “I remember in my freshman year, even the games where there would be high attendance just didn’t feel like a college basketball game.” This year, Hernandez has seen a student section that is engaged in the on-court action and is actively supporting the Canes from the opening tip until the final horn.

8

HURRICANESPORTS

JANUARY 30, 2013

“I’m really excited about what’s going on now,” Hernandez said. “It’s no longer a situation where students only go to the games sometimes, and when they are there, you barely notice them. Now, they go to games and they are active participants. They are very involved and most importantly they’re loud.” Miami’s student section has a long way to go before it develops the same reputation as Duke or Texas A&M, but Hernandez is confident that the student body will become a consistent supporter of Hurricane athletics. “Miami is always going to be different just because it’s Miami,” Hernandez said. “We may never have the same vibe as schools in traditional college towns, but I think what we’re seeing now is the Miami twist to the college town vibe. People here still plan on going out, but now they are planning to go to the game and support the team first. I think there is some of that college town feel. I’ve started to notice the buzz around campus on game days and I think it will only grow in the future.” Both of Miami’s last two home games – Jan. 23 vs. Duke and Jan. 27 vs. Florida State – were sell outs and only 1,300 students were able to attend each game with complimentary admission and that has sparked a unique experience for Miami basketball. Students lined up outside on the “Larranaga Lawn” adjacent to th BankUnited Center prior to both games in the hopes of gaining one of the coveted student section seats. The BUC packed in more than 1,300 students for only the seventh and eighth times in the facility’s history. “Hopefully, Maryland is just step one and we continue growing,” Hernandez said. “I think the basketball team winning definitely helps. But, I think now that the atmosphere is in place, students are going to want to go just for that.” With the Hurricanes sitting atop the ACC heading into the Duke game, Bowsher felt Wednesday’s match-up against the top-ranked team in the country would be huge for building fan tradition at Miami. “Obviously the success that Coach L has put on the court has helped tremendously,” Bowsher said. “I feel like the students have rallied behind that, seeing the effort that our student-athletes are giving, and they’re coming out to support. Hopefully, one feeds the other and it snowballs to create something special here in Coral Gables.”

Captain’s Log

Miami Captain Morgan Stroman Details Being a Team Leader A few times a week, Morgan Stroman, one of the senior captains on the women’s basketball team will be writing a blog of the team’s happenings. She has been an intragal part of the team’s transformation into a ACC and nationally-recognized program. Out of high school, Stroman was a three-time South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year, won four consecutive state championships and was named a McDonald’s All-American. After her sophomore season at Miami, Stroman was named third-team All-ACC and helped guide the Canes to their first ACC regular-season championship. Midway through her junior season, Stroman tore her Achilles’ tendon in a game at Virginia. She missed the rest of the season. However, after an intense rehab, she was ready for her senior season. She currently leads her team in rebounding, steals, blocks and double-doubles and is second on the squad in scoring. Below is Morgan’s first blog entry for HurricaneSports.com. Even though we have had a bumpy start on the road this season, we pulled it out last night with the big win! Losses at Maryland, Florida State and Virginia are already on our résumé and have been tough on the team. They’ve also been tough on me as a captain and senior. With that devastating feeling, we had to think of something to change. Was it our energy? Was it us lacking the support of each other? Were we not playing hard? The answer to all of the questions was that we didn’t do any of it. We didn’t have energy, support each other and we weren’t playing hard enough.

Something had to give with our attitudes versus our next opponent Wake Forest, the same opponents who knocked us out the ACC Tournament last year. In preparation for the game, Coach Meier didn’t take any steps back. With the next practice being one of the toughest practices in a long time after the harsh loss to UVA, we soon bounced back. We as captains, only wanted to make our team better. ‘How do you do that?’ is a question that I asked myself many times in the past. Stefanie (Yderstrom), Pepper (x) and I took a leap and decided to meet with each other on how were going to make each other better and pass it on to our fellow teammates. In my opinion, it isn’t all about the X’s and O’s, it’s the little things that you don’t think matter. With a lesson in our back pockets on our journey to Winston-Salem, we learned that you have two types of pain: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. The pain of regret weighs so much more than the pain of discipline. Suiting up for the game we could only go out and do what we were told and that was to have each other’s back and get excited for each other. That led to playing hard and in the end, a 79-78 win. There was never a moment of doubt and we had so much composure, even when the Demon Deacons were on top. That win just may have started something special for my Hurricanes.

MS. BIG SHOT Twice this season, sophomore guard Suriya McGuire has risen to the occasion and scored a game-winning basket in the fi nal seconds of a game. On Nov. 29, the Minneapolis native broke a 65-all tie with 14 seconds left, securing the Canes 69-65 victory over then No. 6 Penn State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. More recently on Jan. 24, McGuire employed a nifty spin move in the lane to get open for another layup at Wake Forest, giving Miami a 79-78 lead with just 5.3 seconds to play. The athletic McGuire ended that game with a new career high of 17 points.

UM is on a seven-game winning streak. Miami’s last seven-game winning streak was in 2009-10, when the Canes started the season 8-0 before losing to Boston College. UM went on to a 15-1 record before dropping four-straight ACC games and finishing the year 20-13 with a 4-12 league mark.

Coley, Cristobal Join FB Staff James Coley, who served the last three seasons as offensive coordinator at Florida State, has been named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Miami, head coach Al Golden announced Jan. 24 Coley spent the last five seasons in Tallahassee on Jimbo Fisher’s staff - all five as tight ends coach and the last three as the offensive coordinator. As the recruiting coordinator at Florida State in 2008 and 2009, he was instrumental in the Seminoles landing back-to-back Top 10 signing classes and was also named the ACC’s top recruiter in 2010 by ESPN.com. “We’re excited about adding James Coley’s leadership, expertise and passion to our staff and Miami Hurricane Football,” Golden said. “I’ve been an admirer of his offenses output and execution, his commitment to student-athlete development as well as his relentless approach to recruiting Dade and Broward counties. “Coach Coley will be a great asset to the University of Miami and we welcome him, his wife Kenia and their two children back to South Florida,” Golden said. Prior to Florida State, Coley spent one season in his hometown of Miami as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at FIU. He completely overhauled the Golden Panthers offense and established new standards for rushing yardage, as the unit doubled its production over the second half of the season. He spent two seasons as an offensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins under Nick Saban. While with the Dolphins, Coley worked with running backs Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown when the duo boasted the NFL’s seventh-best rushing attack. In 2006, he worked with the Dolphins’ receivers, including All-Pro Chris Chambers and Wes Welker, and was responsible for breaking down opposing defenses and self-scouting as the quality control coach. Coley’s college coaching career began as a graduate assistant at LSU on then-offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher’s staff in 2003 and 2004. The Tigers won the 2003 SEC and National Championships and played in the 2004 Capital One Bowl. Coley spent six years as a high school football coach in Miami from 1997-2002, first as quarterbacks coach from 1997-99 at Miami Senior HS, where he worked with former Hurricanes stars and current NFL standouts Andre Johnson and Roscoe Parrish. He then spent 2000-02 as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Miami Norland HS, where he coached future college stars Dwayne Bowe (LSU), Kareem Brown (Miami), Alexander Bostic III (FIU) and Antwan Barnes (FIU). Coley’s high school coaching career concluded with Miami Norland winning the 6A state title in 2002. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida State in 1997 and his master’s degree from LSU in 2004. Coley and his wife Kenia have two children - Madison and Brady. The Coleys own a home in Coconut Grove and both of their extended families reside in South Florida.

Former University of Miami standout Mario Cristobal has been named associate head coach and will coach the tight ends for the Hurricanes, head coach Al Golden announced Thursday. With Cristobal’s hiring, Brennan Carroll will expand his role to become the wide receivers coach and take a larger role in the passing game after previously coaching the tight ends in 2011 and 2012. Cristobal was a four-year letterwinner for the Hurricanes from 1988-92, playing for Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. An All-BIG EAST offensive tackle, Cristobal was a key member and leader of the Canes program, helping UM to the 1991 national championship. The Miami native comes to Coral Gables with a wealth of coaching experience, most recently as head coach at Florida International University from 2007-12. He guided the Panthers to the 2010 Sun Belt Conference title and their first bowl appearance, a victory over Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. He was named 2010 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and later led FIU to 2011 Beef ’O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl. Prior to taking over the FIU program, Cristobal was an assistant coach for three seasons at ‘The U’ - first as tight ends coach in 2004-05 and as offensive line coach in 2006. His first full-time coaching gig was an assistant at Rutgers, where he coached tight ends and offensive line from 2001-03. During his time as tight ends coach at Rutgers and Miami, Cristobal coached three NFL Draft picks in L.J. Smith (2nd Round, 2003 NFL Draft), Kevin Everett (3rd Round, 2005 NFL Draft) and Greg Olsen (1st Round, 2007 NFL Draft). A prep standout at Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School, he graduated from Miami in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and followed with a master’s degree from UM in 2001. He was a graduate assistant on the Miami Hurricanes football staff from 1998-2000. Before becoming a graduate assistant at Miami, he signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos in 1994. He played for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Cristobal married his wife Jessica in June 2006 and the couple has two sons - Mario Jr. and Rocco.

The Hurricanes’ newest member, Clementina Riobueno, battled back from a 4-1 third-set deficit to seal her team’s victory over a feisty Sun Devil squad. In the process, Riobueno and the Canes moved to 4-0 on the season and will head to Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 8-11 to participate in the ITA National Indoor Tournament. This was a big step for our program,” said UM head coach Paige YaroshukTews. “We’ll take this momentum moving forward.” The Canes trailed in the third set in each of its two remaining matches, creating plenty of tension for the home team.

Yaroshuk-Tews said, “Being down 5-2 in the third on court four and 4-1 on court five and then pulling out the win says a lot about these young players. “I wasn’t too happy about why we were in those situations, but, I was happy about how we got through it.” Riobueno rose to the occasion for her team as she won five consecutive games, overcoming that 4-1 deficit in the third set. Before heading to Charlottesville, the Hurricanes will play host to North Florida at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 2. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m

#ProCanes Coaching Tree Grows By David Villavicencio The University of Miami is known for putting players in the NFL, but there are several coaches with Canes connections roaming the professional sidelines. Marc Trestman is the latest coach with Miami ties to climb to the top of his profession, as the Chicago Bears named him their head coach on Jan. 16. Trestman joins former Miami player and assistant coach Rob Chudzinski, who was recently named head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis’ Chuck Pagano and Tampa Bay’s Greg Schiano as NFL head coaches with UM connections. Trestman was named head coach of the Chicago Bears on January 16, but began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant on Howard Schnellenger’s staff in 1981. Two years later, he coached Bernie Kosar and the rest of Miami’s quarterbacks en route to the school’s first national championship. Following the 1984 season, Trestman moved on to the NFL as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings. Since leaving Miami, the 56-year-old has coached for eight different NFL teams, been the offensive coordinator at NC State and most recently was the head coach of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes. Chudzinski’s ties to Miami go even deeper than Trestman’s. “Chud” played tight end for the Hurricanes from 1986-90, earning national championships in 1987 and 1989. Chudzinski returned to Miami as a graduate assistant in 1994 and was promoted to UM’s tight ends coach in 1996. In 2001, Chudzinksi was named Miami’s offensive coordinator. The first-year coordinator guided Ken Dorsey and the potent Canes offense to a perfect 12-0 season, while picking up his third national championship ring. Chudzinski moved to the NFL in 2004 as a tight ends coach and has climbed the coaching ladder since then. He has been an offensive coordinator twice in the NFL and he returns to Cleveland for the third time, after previously serving as tight ends coach (2004) and offensive coordinator (2007-08). He is the second University of Miami alumnus to become a head coach in the NFL. Hurricanes legend Jim Dooley was the first, coaching the Chicago Bears from 1968-71. Schiano, who was Miami’s defensive coordinator in 1999 and 2000, led the Buccaneers to a 7-9 record in his first season in Tampa Bay. Schiano’s stint in Coral Gables lasted just 18 months before he accepted the head coaching position at Rutgers. But in his brief time at Miami, Schiano coached standout defenders such as linebackers Dan Morgan and Jonathan Vilma, as well as safety Ed Reed. Pagano also has connections to Reed, coaching Miami’s secondary and special teams from 1995-2000. Before that, he had a brief stint as a Hurricane, serving as a graduate assistant under Jimmy Johnson in 1986. Pagano has had numerous coaching opportunities throughout college and the NFL before being named head coach of the Colts in January 2012. The 52-year-old saw his Colts rebound from the worst record in football a year ago to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth this season. Unfortunately, Pagano missed much of the 2012 season after he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia in September 2012. After undergoing treatment, Pagano was able to return to the 27

HURRICANESPORTS

sidelines in December 2012 and coached Indianapolis in its postseason loss to the Texans. Beyond the four head coaches with Miami connections, there are several other coaches in the league with ties to the Canes. Former Hurricane tight end Alfredo Roberts is a member of Pagano’s staff in Indianapolis. Roberts, who won a national championship as a senior in 1987, was a four-year letter winner at Miami. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys over six seasons in the NFL, winning one Super Bowl with Dallas, before retiring after the 1993 season. He began his NFL coaching career in 2009, coaching the Buccaneers’ tight ends for three seasons before joining the Colts in 2012. Winston Moss was known as a playmaking linebacker for the Hurricanes from 1983-86, but Moss has been coaching in the NFL since 1998. A second round pick by the Buccaneers in 1987, Moss played 11 seasons in the NFL before moving into coaching. He is currently the assistant head coach/linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers. Former Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple coached the Browns’ quarterbacks for the past two seasons. Whipple led the Canes offense for two seasons under Randy Shannon, coaching future Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham in 2010. Miami has had 309 players selected in the NFL Draft. The Hurricanes have produced 59 first-round picks, including two No. 1 overall selections. The Hurricanes hold the record for most players selected in the first round of a draft (six in 2004) and have also produced numerous standouts, such as Clinton Portis, Jessie Armstead and Jim Otto, that were not selected in the top round of the NFL Draft. 51 former Hurricanes were with NFL teams in the 2012 regular season and Miami led the NFL with 18 players reaching the postseason this year. Miami’s pipeline to the NFL is strong, but the Canes have also developed several individuals who have gone on to coach in the NFL. Jimmy Johnson is the most famous, leading the Dallas Cowboys to a pair of Super Bowls after he guided Miami to the 1987 National Championship. Two-time national champion Dennis Erickson has been an NFL head coach twice, most recently with the San Francisco 49ers. Butch Davis, who is currently a special assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was also head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2001-04. Dave Wannstedt and Dave Campo are two other former Hurricanes assistants who went on to become NFL head coaches. Wannstedt, who was Miami’s defensive coordinator from 1986-88, was the head coach of the Bears (1993-98) and the Miami Dolphins (2000-04). Campo, who coached defensive backs at UM from 1987-88, was the head coach of the Cowboys from 2000-02. Last week, Ken Dorsey, who led the Miami Hurricanes to the 2001 National Championship, was promoted to the quarterbacks coach of the Carolina Panthers. Dorsey had previously served as a scout for the Panthers for the last two seasons.

No. 54 Miami Opens 2-2 Canes face No. 4 Ohio State in ITA Kickoff Weekend Championships After downing Louisiana Lafayette, 4-3, in the first round of the ITA Kickoff weekend, No. 54 Miami was defeated, 7-0, by No. 4 Ohio State in the weekend’s championship match. Newcomer William Albanese (pictured) has made a name for himself, starting the spring season 3-1 in individual dual matches. Gabriel Flores is also 3-1 to start the season while Wilfredo Gonzalez and Diego Soto are both 2-2 this year. In doubles, three pairs have recorded a 1-2 record and one is 0-1. After falling behind with a pair of losses in doubles, followed by a singles defeat, the No. 64 Canes won four-straight singles matched to defeat No. 71 University of Louisiana Lafayette, 4-3.

“We had a really good win against Louisiana Lafayette,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “They are very strong at every position and great competitors. It is amazing how many good teams there are in college tennis this year.” Wilfredo Gonzalez won his singles match in three sets to clinch the win for the Canes, but it was the play of newcomer William Albanese that turned the momentum for Miami. “William was the first to get the win in singles and tie the match,” said Rincon. “After that, there were a lot of close matches and the guys felt the momentum go our way. We really finished strong in the last 15-20 minutes of the match.”
