THurricanes estaverde Inducted into Loss CollegeofFootball HOF Mourn JoJo Nicolas

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former Miami Hurricanes defensive back JoJo Nicolas died Feb. 26 after suffering injuries from an early morning car accident. Nicolas was 24 years old. “The entire University of Miami family mourns the loss of JoJo Nicolas who passed away earlier this evening,” Miami AD Blake James said. “JoJo was a valued member of our community, our school and our football program, and his loss is devastating to everyone he touched. On behalf of the University, I send our condolences and thoughts and prayers to JoJo’s family, friends and teammates. He will forever be a part of The U.” A four-year letterwinner for the Miami Hurricanes from 2007-11, he was the recipient of Miami’s 2011 Melching Leadership Award at the team’s banquet at the end of the season. As a senior in 2011, he recorded 66 tackles and two interceptions. “The University of Miami community has suffered a deep loss, with the passing of JoJo Nicolas,” head coach Al Golden said. “For all of us who were fortunate to know JoJo--to coach him, teach him, play alongside him or simply to befriend him--we will forever carry his memory with us. Our prayers go out to his family and his loved ones, and he will always be a cherished member of our family.” Nicolas, a 2011 graduate of the University of Miami, signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2012. The funeral for JoJo Nicolas will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Glendale Missionary Baptist Church, located at 14580 SW 117th Avenue in Miami.

Track Wins Six ACC Titles

The University of Miami track and field program picked up six individual titles at the 2014 ACC Indoor Championships. Artie Burns, Lea Johnson, Amber Monroe, Isaiah Simmons, Shakima Wimbley and the women’s 4x400m relay proved they were the best in the ACC last weekend in Clemson, S.C. Burns entered the men’s 60m hurdles final as the top seed and the freshman finished the race as the 2014 ACC indoor champion. Burns’ time of 7.74 seconds was five-hundredths better than second place finisher Drequan Hoskey of Virginia. “It feels great to come in fresh from high school and do this,” Burns said. “It’s big for my confidence going into nationals.” Burns is the third Hurricane to win the ACC Indoor Championship in men’s 60m HH, joining Devon Hill (2010-11) and Cory Nelms (2009). Johnson won the women’s weight throw with a personal-best mark of 20.99m that ranks second in school history. Johnson is the second Hurricane to win the ACC Indoor Championship in women’s weight throw, joining 2007 champion Khadija Talley. “I don’t know that I was expecting to go as far as I did,” Johnson said. “I went into the finals in fourth place, but everything clicked and I moved into first.” Monroe gave Miami a sweep in the women’s throws, securing the women’s shot put championship with a personal-best throw of 17.18m. The junior’s mark ranks fifth in the country and second in school history. “We changed her technique to the spin this year and some things are starting to click,” Miami associate head coach Cory Young said. “She is a relentless worker. We hit it hard in the weight room to get her stronger and she is a very tall, athletic girl that can do big things when she lines everything up. I think there is more there. We still have more room for her to improve upon.” Monroe joins Miami record holder Kimberli Barrett (2005) as the only women’s shot put ACC indoor champions in UM history. 16

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

“I’m still shocked,” Monroe said. “I went into this competition looking to score points and get on the podium. It’s crazy though and I still don’t believe it. I have been working hard at the shot. This feels great.” While Monroe was a surprise winner, Simmons entered the men’s shot put final as the clear favorite. The defending ACC indoor shot put champion reclaimed his spot atop the medal stand with a throw of 18.66m. “This year I had a lot more confidence just based off what I did in the previous meet in Albuquerque and breaking the school indoor record again,” Simmons said. “Setting myself with an indoor personal-best, I wanted to build off that. My expectations were to get a winning throw and try to move up the national list.” Wimbley’s performance was noteworthy because she overcame adversity to reach the top of the medal stand. The standout freshman was disqualified after what would have been a silver medal performance in the 400m, but Wimbley did not dwell on the disappointment for long, entering the women’s 200m final as the top seed and finishing a champion. The standout sprinter blazed down the track in 23.58 seconds to join Tarika Williams (2011), Murielle Ahoure (2009), Krista Simkins (2008) and Dominque Darden (2005) as Canes who have won the 200m ACC indoor title. “Good things are not always going to happen,” Wimbley said. “You have to take the good with the bad. I was able to suck it up and focus on the next race. I knew I had to keep my mind strong for my team.” Wimbley also played a key role in Miami securing its first gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay since 2006. The freshman teamed with Kelsey Balkwill, Taneisha Cordell and Jamika Glades to run a 3:38.54. The Canes open their outdoor season on March 21 at the Hurricane Invitational.

The patience of Jim

Next time you’re running about two quarts low on hope, or feel like you’re on the wrong end of God’s Whac-A-Mole game, think of Jim Kelly and be glad you’re not him. Jim Kelly is sport’s Job. If it’s raining anywhere, it’s raining on Jim Kelly. He’s as unlucky as a one-legged dog. The former Buffalo Bills QB has endured more pain, grief and disappointment than many nations, and it’s only getting worse. “Jim has had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” says his brother Pat. “Lately, it’s been some really low lows.” And yet when you see Jim Kelly, he acts as if he just won Publishers Clearing House. “I’ve been blessed,” says Kelly, 54. “I wouldn’t change a thing.” Really? Because I wouldn’t wish what has happened to him on a tax collector. He’s in 24-hour pain. He can’t feel the skin on the left half of his face. He says his lip feels like it’s constantly on fire. He has had his upper left jaw removed and all but two of his teeth -- and those two have had six root canals. He admits he hasn’t been able to sleep in years without taking something. “I honestly can’t remember Jim sleeping through the night,” says his wife, Jill. “I’m not sure he ever has.” Kelly carries around more hardware than a Home Depot. His back has two plates and 10 screws in it. His neck has a plate and six screws. He just had double hernia surgery. One day, he had to have a cyst removed under his nostril without Novocain. “I think they heard me three office buildings over,” he says. He should really be dead by now, but nothing seems to do the trick, not a plane crash, cancer, more operations than he can remember, a lifetime of disappointment nor bottomless grief. He never wanted to play in Buffalo. He played 11 years in Buffalo. He ached to win a Super Bowl. Nobody got closer without winning one. He yearned for a son. He had a son, who suffered from Krabbe disease and died before his ninth birthday. He lives to hunt, yet hunting has nearly killed him. “And yet he never complains,” Pat says. “He’s the toughest person I know.” Jim Kelly shrugs and says, “Yeah, sometimes you just want to say to God, ‘OK. I give. Uncle. Just give me some time where I don’t feel any pain anymore.’ But nobody wants to hear about my problems.” Only once has he let himself feel a spoonful of self-pity. He turned to Jill and said, “Is this how it’s going to be the rest of my life? Because I don’t know if I can handle this the rest of my life.” But he will. He has handled more bad breaks than an orthopedist. He is the undisputed champion of Sucking It Up and Smiling. Four straight seasons he took his Bills to the Super Bowl, and four straight times they lost. He still has never watched tapes of those losses, but last weekend, for the first time in his life, he watched a highlight tape of his 1990 season, which ended with the Wide Right loss to the New York Giants. “I’m never going to watch it again,” he says. “It only made it hurt worse. I don’t like to 17

think about any of them.” What bugs Kelly is that the Bills get no love for being the only team in history to make four straight championships. “You talk to John Elway or Dan Marino. They’re amazed at how we were able to do that. ... But I know now why the good Lord did that. He was preparing me for what was coming.” What was coming was more heartache than a year’s worth of Super Bowl losses could dump on him. There was the 2000 bear hunting trip in Alaska, when the single-prop plane he was flying in went down in the Bering Sea. Kelly, upside down, kicked the window out and swam for shore in 39-degree water, then thawed himself with a Bunsen burner. “I thought I was a goner,” he says. He came back 23 pounds lighter. There was his 37th birthday, when his son Hunter was born. “I dreamed about coaching my son in football,” Kelly says. “Hunter would wear No. 12, and his cousin Chad [Kelly] would wear 83 [Andre Reed’s number]. That script was written.” Hunter would be 17 today. Chad -- now 19 and Jim Kelly’s godson -- was the first New York high school QB to pass for more than 2,000 yards and run for more than 1,000 in a season and signed with Clemson, where he’ll compete as a sophomore for the starting job when spring practice begins this week. Jim, meanwhile, went on to devoting his life to keeping other fathers from feeling the hole he’s had in his gut ever since Hunter’s death. He works every day to pass legislation that would fix the state-by-state flaws in infant-disease screening -- screening that could’ve saved Hunter’s life. “Thousands of babies are dying because they’re born in the wrong state,” Kelly says. “Some states test for eight diseases and some for as many as 60. Why can’t every state test for the max amount? We give so much money to other countries and yet we’re robbing our own kids of a quality of life.” After that came crippling back problems, murderous neck troubles, and then the jaw cancer, even though Kelly never smoked or dipped. It has ravaged him, leaving him with a prosthesis for his upper jaw and a pain that tucks him in nightly. “I worry about him,” Pat says. “I really do.” And yet what does his brother do for a living? He crisscrosses the country giving motivational speeches that bring tears to faces, goose bumps to arms and perseverance to hearts. “His ability to lose, and lose big, and yet handle it, is so impressive to me,” Jill says. “This has all made him an even better person than before, more patient even. It’s made him want to help even more people than before. ... People hear him speak and think, ‘How can I get some of this hope, this hope beyond circumstance that he has?’ I’ve seen it. What he’s been through is a curse, yes. And it’s a trial, yes. But, really, when you think of how much good it’s brought others, it’s a gift.” Fine. But you wish this gift would just stop giving.

Canes Remain Perfect in ACC Play

@HurricaneTennis

Canes Jump to No. 13 The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team jumped seven spots to No. 13 in the latest ITA women’s tennis rankings on Mar. 5.

Miami (8-2, 4-0 ACC) has won four-straight ACC matches to start conference play, and most recently, picked up a win against No. 19 Georgia Tech on Sunday. The Hurricanes have two players in the singles rankings, Kelsey Laurente at No. 40 and Stephanie Wagner at No. 71. Two Hurricanes doubles teams remain in the rankings with Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque at No. 24 and Kelsey Laurente and Melissa Bolivar at No. 48.

The 20th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s remained perfect in ACC play with a 7-0 sweep of No. 19 Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon. “We had some game plans that we wanted to implement and the girls were able execute them,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I have been waiting for a day like this for a while, where every girl shows up, every girl battles hard, and every girl stays disciplined and detailed. Like I said, we have been preaching this in practice for a while, so it was nice to see it happen today.”

This past weekend in the match against Georgia Tech, Laurente and Bolivar picked up an impressive win, taking down the No. 3 team in the nation—Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey of Georgia Tech.

#BeatBaylor

In the biggest win of the day, 48th-ranked Kelsey Laurente and Melissa Bolivar—playing at the one-double spot today—topped the 3rd-ranked doubles team in the nation. “We made a little change between our No. 1 and 2 doubles. Our No. 2 doubles has been playing some really great tennis, and I thought they deserved the opportunity to play that team today from Georgia Tech,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. Laurente and Bolivar took advantage of the opportunity of playing in the one spot. After splitting the first six games of the match 3-3 with Georgia Tech’s Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey, the Hurricane duo started to pull away. The Hurricanes won five out of the last six games to finish of the statement win. In the two-doubles matchup, Miami’s 24th-ranked Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque started the match down 3-2, but would go to win the next four games to take a 6-3 lead. After trading a few games, the duo did prevail 8-6 against Georgia Tech’s 49th-ranked Muriel Wacker and Natasha Prokhnevska. “I was real happy with both of our doubles teams today,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I was even happier to see how happy Monique and Clementina were for our No. 1 team to come away with that match. That was a big win for them. The goal is to get both those teams in the NCAA Tournament and we took a step in the right direction today.” At the three-doubles position, Miami’s Stephanie Wagner and Brittany Dubins were trailing Georgia Tech’s Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeye 7-4 when Miami clinched the doubles point. 40th-ranked Laurente won her singles match convincingly in two straight sets against Georgia Tech’s Prokhnevska 6-2, 6-2. Laurente’s spring season record improves to 9-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in ACC play. “She’s a tough competitor,” Laurente said. “I was just ready for her and for every single ball.” Following Laurente’s victory, Riobueno brought in another win against Georgia Tech’s Rasheeda McAdoo. Riobueno controlled her opponent and the match throughout its entirety, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. On the next court over, Lina Lileikite played with confidence, taking down Georgia Tech’s Megan Kurey. She would go on to finish her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Another highlight of today’s match was the singles play of No. 71 Wagner. Trailing in the first set 5-1 to Georgia Tech’s Kendal Woodard, she dug deep and won six of the next seven games to take the first set 7-6. Wagner kept the momentum going and won the second set 6-2. After losing five of the first six games, Wagner won 11 of the last 14 to close out the victory. In what turned out to be the longest match of the day, Albuquerque defeated Georgia Tech’s Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer in a three-setter. After splitting the first two sets 6-3 and then 3-6, the two were tied 6-6 in the third set, forcing a tiebreaker, in which Albuquerque came prevailed 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Bolivar played a tight match against Georgia Tech’s Muriel Wacker. Bolivar split the first and second set with her opponent and because Miami had already won the match at this point, a 10-point tiebreaker (win by two) would determine the winner. After constantly going back and forth, Bolivar would finish the tiebreaker winning with a score of 12-10. The Hurricanes return to action on March 7 when they hit the road for their first ACC road match of the year against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Rowing Ready for Spring Season

Miami travels to Tampa, Fla., for a scrimmage against the Michigan Wolverines The University of Miami rowing program is set to begin its 2014 spring season this weekend with a scrimmage against the University of Michigan. The Canes and Wolverines will hit the water on Saturday, March 8, in Tampa, Fla. Miami and Michigan will have the 1V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and Novice 8+ boats scrimmage against each other in preparation for a challenging 2014 schedule. “I’m excited about our racing schedule,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “It is a challenging schedule with many opportunities to race against some strong opponents.” Miami enters the 2014 championship season after an impressive showing at the 2013 Head of the Hooch in November. The Canes were highly competitive on the Tennessee River, winning two races and earning four Top 10 finishes in what was a successful weekend in Chattanooga. “All the crews raced hard and with lots of poise,” Sanderson said. “It was great to see all their hard work in practice pay off in the races.” The 2013 Head of the Hooch was an excellent way to end the 2013 year and open the Sanderson Era. Now Miami is on the cusp of opening its first spring season under Sanderson. In his first year at the helm of the Miami rowing program, Sanderson will look to seniors Breanna Hayton, Maggie Fragel, Katie Guest and Courtney Keller to be veteran leaders in the 2014 championship season. Sophomores Alison Whitty, Sarah Aschebrock and Caitlin Lowe, as well as freshmen Frida Carlsson, Jaimie Snelgrove and Joanna Unsworth, are underclassmen who will be counted on to help the Canes compete with the top boats in the ACC. Saturday’s scrimmage will give the Hurricanes a chance to get on the water against another school as they get ready for their first official race of the 2014 championship season. Miami will host UConn at the Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center on March 22. Following their home regatta against UConn, the Hurricanes will travel to California to compete in the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic. A year ago in San Diego Miami’s Varsity 8+ entered the Cal Cup Grand Final as the top seed, but it was the University of San Diego who opened the race in front. The Toreros, who were racing on their home course, led by as much as a full boat length during the first 1000m. But the Canes surprised the Toreros at the 1000m mark with a move that ended with Miami taking over the lead with close to 500m to go. Miami’s late charge led to a Hurricane win by a boat length over San Diego, with the University of British Columbia following in third position. Miami’s 1V8+ will compete for the JessopWhittier Cup at the 2014 San Diego Crew Classic, while 2V8+ will look to bring home the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. The Hurricanes will also race at the Tiger Invitational (April 19-20) in Clemson, S.C. and in Orlando, Fla., against UCF, Tulsa and Old Dominion (April 27). Both regattas will help Miami’s final preparations before the ACC Championships on May 17. A year ago the Hurricanes placed fourth in the conference with 27 points, up two spots from 2012, thanks to strong performances from the two Varsity 8+ crews. Miami will try to continue to climb the standings in the talent-rich ACC in 2014 and beyond.

By Robert C. Jones Jr. - UM News Residents of Siguatepeque, Honduras, have probably never heard of the Bowman Foster Ashe Scholarship. But in an indirect way, the University of Miami financial award, named for the institution’s first president, has lessened their dependence on rainwater and brought clean drinking water to their taps. That’s because the scholarship helped industrial engineer Caitlin Augustin pay for her education at UM, where, as an undergraduate, she started a chapter of Engineers without Borders, spearheading in 2008 a project for the small Honduran town that resulted in a four-and-a-halfkilometer water pipeline. Today, the pipeline is still flowing, and Siguatepeque townspeople are grateful. But not as appreciative as Augustin. Scholarships have allowed her to soar, and without them, she said, her academic career at UM would have been grounded. At UM’s annual Scholarship Donor Recognition Luncheon held in the Student Activities Center ballroom, Augustin joined hundreds of students—from biology to business, chemistry to communication, and economics to engineering majors—in thanking the many philanthropists who have made college a reality by providing financial assistance. “Scholarships allowed me the flexibility and opportunities to explore my passions and interests,” said Augustin, who earned an industrial engineering degree from UM in 2010 and is now working on her Ph.D., with a fellowship from the Abess Center for Ecosystem and Science Policy helping her along the way.

I put all my effort into it and things turned out the right way.” Northwestern held off second-day leader Iowa State to win the team title. ASK BEFORE YOU ACT

NCAA Bylaws were established primarily to protect the health and safety of student-athletes. They were also designed to ensure that those participating were amateurs and that intercollegiate athletics was an integral part of life for a college student. While some argue whether that amateurism ideal should still exist in today’s society, current NCAA Bylaws still prevent student-athletes from profiting in any way based on their athletic abilities or athletics reputation. Thus, student-athletes would not be eligible for collegiate participation if they: • Accept any remuneration for or permit the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind. • Receive remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual use of such product or service. NCAA Bylaws also prohibit boosters, local business and corporate entities from using a student-athlete’s name, picture or likeness to promote any commercial product. A student-athlete’s name or picture may also not appear on commercial items that include: • T-Shirts • Sweatshirts • Playing Cards • Posters These rules currently exempt the student’s college or university from these prohibitions, so a university can currently sell items using student-athlete’s names, photos or likenesses. We ask that all University of Miami fans and supporter refrain from using any studentathlete’s name, photo or likeness in a way that could negatively affect their eligibility. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Canes Take Momentum into ACC Tourney After ending the regular season with three-straight wins, the Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team has earned the 8-seed in the ACC Tournament set to be played on Mar. 5 through Mar. 9 in Greensboro, N.C. Miami (16-13, 8-8 ACC) will face the 9-seed Florida State Seminoles on Thursday, Mar. 6 at 2 p.m. The Seminoles concluded the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and 7-9 in ACC play. Just five games ago, the Hurricanes went to Tallahassee and came away with a three-point win, propelling Katie Meier’s squad to a strong finish that saw them earn four victories in their last five games.

UFamily, Friends Celebrate Lin Dunn Lin Dunn will be honored as the Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball ACC Legend at the this week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. But before that was going to take place, it only seemed fitting that the Hurricanes invite back Coach Dunn for a celebration on campus at the University of Miami. A reception was held at the new Schwartz Center on campus on Mar. 1, the day before Miami’s final home game of the season. In a great evening of visiting, catching up, and celebrating, friends and former players of Coach Dunn took the opportunity to revisit the past and reflect on their time with their old coach. Current head coach Katie Meier, athletic director Blake James and Rick Remmert each took a turn speaking to the audience about what Dunn meant to the Hurricanes family, and how much they appreciated her contribution to The U. Finally, Coach Dunn took the stage and very quickly made us all remember why she is so beloved by the women’s basketball community and by this university.

In the first matchup against Florida State on Jan. 9, the then 18thranked Seminoles squeaked out a five-point win over the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.

Photos of the event are available for free download courtesy of JC Ridley at Caneshooter.com

The winner of Thursday’s game will face top-seeded and 2nd-ranked Notre Dame on Friday at 2 p.m.

Senior Sendoff: Krystal Saunders and Maria Brown

The new-look tournament will feature all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday evening and the championship game on Sunday at 7 p.m. The championship game of the 2014 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played Sunday at 7 p.m. All 14 games of this year’s tournament are set to be televised. The first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be carried by the league’s regional sports network, RSN. Both of Saturday evening’s semifinal games will be carried nationally by ESPNU, while a national audience will watch Sunday’s championship game via ESPN. All games will also be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN.

EXHIBITION AGAINST MARLINS The No. 14 Miami Hurricanes dropped their annual exhibition with the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium, falling in the afternoon affair on March 26 by a final score of 5-2. Senior righthander Javi Salas pitched well in his second start of the spring, scattering five hits across four shutout innings. The Coral Gables, Fla., native had one walk and one strikeout against a Marlins lineup featuring four potential Opening Day starters. The Hurricanes got on the board first thanks to an RBI grounder from first baseman Brad Fieger in the third inning that was mishandled by Marlins shortstop Ed Lucas. Senior outfielder Dale Carey got the action started with a double to left off reliever James Leverton, and took third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Tyler Palmer.

PERFECT! Salas makes history at The Light Javi Salas made history at Mark Light Field on March 4, pitching just the 23rd perfect game in modern NCAA Division I baseball history in No. 16 Miami’s 17-0 shutout of visiting Villanova. The senior righthander and team captain retired all 27 Wildcats batters he faced, needing just 113 pitches to get through perfection. Salas became just the second Miami Hurricane to ever throw a perfect game and the first since Kevin Sheary on March 14, 1987. He struck out Villanova pinch hitter Derrick May Jr. for the final out of the game, sending his teammates into a frenzied celebration in front of the mound. “I don’t even know what to think,” Salas said after the game. “In that last inning, I was trying to keep my adrenaline down. The fans were getting up, and I couldn’t believe it. It’s a dream come true.” Salas said it took some superstitious silent treatment from his teammates in the dugout after the sixth inning to realize the potential magnitude of his

performance. “I got back in the dugout and I was kind of isolated and no one was talking to me,” he said. “That’s when I realized what I had going. I had a couple of 3-1 counts there that I was hoping I didn’t walk a guy. I had to keep my approach and stay aggressive going after these guys. Luck had it for me today.” Salas credited his team’s performance in all three phases of the game as the recipe for success against the Wildcats (2-8). “That’s the only reason I showed up today - to get our team back on track,” Salas said. “I didn’t care how it happened or what the score was, we really needed to win. I think it all came together tonight. We played great defense, we hit the ball, and we got a little luck with pitching.” Salas was elected team captain for the second consecutive year prior to 2014 - his final season as a Hurricane.

Carey would score on an error charged to Lucas on a ground ball from Fieger, who advanced to second on a throw that sailed into the visiting team dugout. Carey finished the game 2-for-3 before being replaced by sophomore Ricky Eusebio in center. The Marlins were charged with three errors in their spring opener in front of 1,786 fans at Roger Dean.

Brotherly Love During Perfecto from Deadspin.com: “Miami senior Javi Salas threw a perfect game for the Hurricanes against the Villanova Wildcats. Even if the final score wasn’t that dramatic—Miami won 17-0— there was another hook: Salas’s little brother, Jorge, had the call for the Miami student radio station. It’s awesome. “Chris Wittyngham, the sports director at WVUM, told us that he assigned Jorge to call this particular game far enough in advance that the starting pitcher was not known at the time. WVUM exclusively carried the game, so the only call of Javi Salas’s perfect game was his brother’s.”

NEWS AND NOTES | AROUND THE LIGHT ***Miami earned its third win of the season against a top 25 team in a 3-1 victory over No. 2 Florida State on Feb. 28. The Hurricanes captured a series victory over then-No. 16 Florida at Mark Light Field from Feb. 21-23.
