ADIDAS & MIAMI UNVEIL POSTSEASON UNIFORMS

The University of Miami and adidas unveiled the 2016 Made in March Uniform Collection for the Hurricanes to wear during the NCAA basketball postseason. The uniform collection features unique design elements that pay tribute to the team’s identity and school history. Miami’s Made in March uniforms incorporate hurricane style cuts and patterns along the waistband and a bold, dual-color pop along the jersey collar, arm holes and short hem. The white ͞U͟ logo featured on the short is done up in terrycloth for sweat management during the game’s biggest moments. To give players optimum performance on the court, the uniforms feature the same lightweight, sweat-wicking technology used in the NBA. Targeted ventilation zones on the chest, back and side keep players cool even in the most intense moments of the game. A mid-hole mesh on the short maximizes comfort and breathability as the game heats up. The Hurricanes will lace up the latest adidas basketball footwear including special editions of the Crazylight Boost 2.5 Low and D Lillard 2 in team colors. The 2016 Made in March uniforms debut on court with conference tournament play. Fans can grab their team gear at adidas.com and campus area retailers beginning this March. THOMAS SHINES AT ACC TOURNAMENT FOR @CANESWBB

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – “She’s like Reggie Jackson. She’s not Mr. October, she’s Ms. March.” That is what Miami head coach Katie Meier said of Jessica Thomas after the junior guard’s dazzling performance in the Hurricanes’ ACC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Florida State. Thomas scored a season-high 21 points and set a career-best with five 3-pointers made in the 74-56 win against the No. 14/10 Seminoles. She also tied career highs in blocked shots (two) and minutes played (38), while logging five assists, two steals and only two turnovers in the win. The stellar outing by Thomas pushed Miami to its first-ever multi-win ACC Tournament showing in 12 years in the conference, as it opened play the previous day with a 77-55 thumping of Pittsburgh. Thomas was far from done, though. In the semifinals against No. 2/3 Notre Dame, Thomas again connected on five 3-pointers and tallied a co-game-high 17 points. After going 94-straight games without five 3-pointers, Thomas had done it in backto-back outings against two of the nation’s top teams on one of the biggest stages of the season. The Gainesville, Fla., native, has always had a flair for the dramatic in March. In 87 regular season games, she has posted 17-plus points four times. In nine postseason tournament games, she has done so five times, including tallying the four highest single-game totals of her career. In Miami’s last six postseason games, Thomas is averaging 17.8 points per game. Her career average is 8.8 an outing and removing those half dozen games, it is 8.2 per contest.

14

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

MARCH 17, 2016

“I just think my competitive spirit, my will to win and just knowing my teammates and I put in so much work,” Thomas said of why she plays so well in March. “I can’t see anything else but us being on top.” Thomas averaged 14.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, while shooting 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from 3-point range in Miami’s three games in Greensboro, N.C. Her outstanding showing led to her earning ACC All-Tournament Second Team honors at the conclusion of the event. She is the fifth Hurricane to garner ACC All-Tournament honors and the first since Shawnice Wilson in 2011. The first three to do so—Tamara James, Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams—all rank among the five all-time at Miami in scoring. Thomas, buoyed by her elite March performances, is well on her way to joining them in the 1,000-points club. She currently has 845 in her career and is averaging 11.9 points per game this season, second-best on the team. With its two blowout wins and its superb effort against top-seeded Notre Dame in the semifinals, Thomas and the Hurricanes certainly made their mark at the Greensboro Coliseum. “I think we answered all the doubts,” Meier said. “Do we have electric, exciting players, too? Yeah. And can we be a giant killer, which we’ve always had that reputation.” Meier and the Hurricanes are hoping that “Ms. March” can continue to her Reggie Jackson-like outings in the NCAA Tournament as they look to knock off another giant. Thomas, as she said, she cannot see it any other way that.

BEHIND THE MIC WITH JOE ZAGACKI Rewind to Feb. 9, 2016. The Miami men’s basketball team is playing Pittsburgh inside the BankUnited Center in another important ACC matchup. With just over two minutes to play, Miami holds a five-point lead over the Panthers and appears to be separating itself down the stretch. However, Pittsburgh just won’t go away and with 30 seconds to go in the game, the score is tied 63-63. These are the moments that Miami men’s basketball play-by-play announcer Joe Zagacki lives for. “The unpredictability of the finish is the best because it keeps you on your toes and makes you better at what you’re doing,” Zagacki said. In the final 30 seconds, Miami has a chance to hold for the final possession. Sheldon McClellan fires up a shot from the corner to win it, but it’s no good. Davon Reed follows with a tip, but it’s no good. Finally Angel Rodriguez – one of the smallest players on the court – follows with a tip in and the Hurricanes have the lead!

in your mind to think about anything else other than what’s happening in those final seconds.” Throughout his broadcasting career, Zagacki has called many games that have come down to the wire, but it is his passion and energy that has been so endearing to Hurricane fans during his entire career. “I love the drama,” Zagacki said. “Being able to execute during the drama and being able to describe it is a challenge, and it makes it fun. I think those close games is what keeps me going back because it puts you in a place that’s very rare. You don’t go to that mindset every day.” Zagacki admits that being able to call games doesn’t come without paying a price. Before each game he calls, Zagacki spends eight to 10 hours in preparing for the broadcast. He is a meticulous planner, a lesson he learned, working alongside Rick Weaver the former Voice of the Miami Dolphins. “Rick always took so much pride in what he was doing, and it was something I always noticed,” Zagacki said.

Zagacki, who sat courtside during the entire thrilling sequence, called the eventual winning basket on the air the only way he knows how: with energy, passion, and emotion.

Zagacki’s knowledge of the team he covers has allowed him to serve as a staple figure within the Hurricanes men’s basketball program for the past 14 years.

“We have to nail it,” Zagacki said. “There is no second chance. The thing about those close games is that it puts you in a place where nothing else matters. When broadcasting games that go down to the finish, you go to a place where everything else is blocked out. There is no room

“I’ve been doing it the same way by following the team,” Zagacki said. “I go to the shootaround, I go to practice, and I get the scouting report.”

15

Zagacki also holds a strong relationship with the players on the team,

@HURRICANESPORTS #BUILDINGCHAMPIONS

BEHIND THE MIC WITH JOE ZAGACKI which might explain the emotion and passion he delivers on each radio broadcast on WQAM – the flagship home of the Miami Hurricanes. “The only age that changes in this industry in mine,” Zagacki said with a grin. “The kids are always 18-22, but I’m always getting older. What I have learned is to be the adult and be a mentor to these studentathletes, and I think they appreciate that. I don’t need to go up to them and high five them because of a great performance. I can just tell them congratulations. I think the job is to be supportive. The best compliment I get from the players is when they are gone, and then they come back, and they say hello.” Zagacki believes his emotional style of broadcast stems from relationships he holds with the players and coaches involved with the program. “I’m kind of an emotional guy,” Zagacki said. “I don’t think it would be the same if I was doing a team that I was not emotionally invested in. I know the stories of our players as well as anyone else, so I think that leads to some of the emotion. I just think you have to do a game and be yourself – that’s the best way to do it.” Zagacki has a strong support system in place. The Voice of the Hurricanes has been married to his wife Cheryl for 25 years. “This job is a little bit different than the average 9-to-5 job,” Zagacki said. “What’s great about Cheryl is that she understands that. In broadcasting, you could have a good day on the air, but a bad day because your team lost.” Zagacki began his broadcasting career in 1979 and began serving as the Hurricanes’ football sideline reporter in 1983, working alongside legendary Miami play-by-play announcer Sonny Hirsch – a man Zagacki regards as one of the biggest influences in his broadcast career. “Hurricane fans love Sonny,” Zagacki said. “He had two tenures as the Voice of the Hurricanes, so I try to honor him in each one of my broadcasts by sneaking in one of his phrases somewhere.” In addition to his paying respect to his former broadcast partner, Zagacki never leaves home without his standard mini hour glass – a tool he has used for most of his professional career thanks to the advice of Jon Miller, the Voice of the San Francisco Giants. “Everybody always asks me about the hour glass,” Zagacki said with a laugh. “The hour glass is a reminder for me to give the score every 90 seconds. It’s like a silent alarm. “I use the hour glass for every sport. I had some lady come out of the stands and tap me on the shoulder and said why are you flipping that hour glass right in the middle of the game, but it works for me.”

16

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

MARCH 17, 2016

Zagacki has a strong attachment to his hometown of South Florida, and he never fails to realize how fortunate he is to be calling games. He was involved in an airplane crash that nearly took his life in 1992 when he was helping transport supplies to those who were affected by Hurricane Andrew. “Every game is still a thrill,” Zagacki said. “Everyone has their own rituals, but when they play the national anthem, I think that is a good time to reflect and be grateful for the position that I have. I think during that point, I’m always very grateful that I have another opportunity to call another game. Then I try to throw a perfect game, which never happens.” This March, Zagacki will have another opportunity to reflect as he takes the mic to call Miami’ 2016 trip to the NCAA Tournament. Fans can listen to Zagacki and the Hurricanes on 560 WQAM.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Two members of the University of Miami women’s basketball team, Emese Hof and Jessica Thomas, were tabbed as members of 2015-16 All-ACC Academic Team. Miami was one of eight schools with multiple selections among the 23 honorees. She leads the team in blocks with 34, while her rebounding average and field goal percentage both rank second. Hof has posted double figures 10 times during her freshman campaign, including scoring 11 points in Miami’s 77-55 victory over Pittsburgh Thursday in the second round of the ACC Tournament. In her first semester at Miami, Hof posted a 3.740 GPA and was named to the Dean’s List, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and the Book Buster Honor Roll. She has yet to declare an academic major. “This is an awesome accomplishment for Emese to receive as a freshman,” Meier said. “She has put up great numbers on the court and also excelled in the classroom.” A 5-foot-6-inch guard from Gainesville, Fla., Thomas is averaging 11.4 points, second-most on the team, and a team-high 3.6 assists per game. Her 2.06:1 assist/turnover ratio ranks second in the ACC and she leads the Hurricanes in minutes per game at 31.0 an outing. Thomas, a team co-captain, has scored double-digit points in 20 of 30 games this season and has fewer than nine just six times. Thomas connected on a career-high five 3-pointers on just six attempts in the win over the No. 14/10-ranked Seminoles. Junior guard Adrienne Motley posted a game-high 20 points for Miami in its victory over the Tar Heels, which was its second-straight road win in Chapel Hill, N.C. 3. Attendance Records (11/13/15, 12/2/15 & 1/24/16) Miami set a new record home attendance record when 4,034 fans came to the BankUnited Center for the Hurricanes’ season opener against Wright State. In the Big Ten/ACC Challenge victory over Illinois just three

The seventhleading scorer in program history and the single-season 3-point percentage record holder, Blue became just the fourth Hurricane to have her number retired. The Hurricanes forced Duke into 24 missed shots in a row and limited the Blue Devils to a program record-low 11 points in the first half. 6. Motley Joins 1,000-Point Club (11/29/15) With her first basket of the seventh game of the season—a jump shot against La Salle—Motley became the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000 points. A Newport News, Va., native, Motley is the 13th Hurricane to reach quadruple digits in fewer than three seasons. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Motley currently has 1,400 points and ranks No. 12 all-time in scoring at The U. 7.
