Jose Gandara Named Head Volleyball Coach
After an extensive search, the University of Miami named Jose Gandara as its head volleyball coach. Gandara, 45, comes to Miami after spending the past eight years as an assistant at the University of Washington. He previously served as an assistant at UNLV and his alma mater, UC Santa Barbara. “I feel like I’ve been working for this moment for a long time,” Gandara said. “It’s a tough job and I wanted to be in the right situation with good support and good people around me. I was confident in my abilities and I think Miami fit that match.” Gandara is a highly-respected teacher who has played and coached at the top levels of college and professional volleyball. “Keno” assisted Washington head coach Jim McLaughlin with all aspects of coaching, including opponent scouting and contributing to the Huskies’ defensive package. “We are excited for Jose to join the UM family,” said Jennifer Strawley, Miami’s senior women’s administrator. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, has been a part of a top volleyball program and has tremendous recruiting connections.” Gandara began his coaching career at UCSB in 1992 as an assistant with the men’s team and was an assistant with the women’s team in 1994. He also spent one season as a head coach/ player with the San Juan Volleyball club in the Puerto Rico Professional League. “Jose is well respected by his peers in the volleyball community and is committed to developing our student-athletes both on and off the volleyball court,” Strawley said. “Most importantly, he will be an asset to the athletic department and the university community.” 4

Miami assistant coach Lee Nelson will remain on Gandara’s staff. Nelson and Gandara have known each other for over 25 years and are excited to work together again. “I’ve known Jose for over 25 years and I have the highest level of respect for him as an individual, for his knowledge in the sport of volleyball and his dedication to the teams he’s been a part of,” Nelson said. “I think he’s a tremendous addition to this program. He will build on the success that we’ve already had and I think he can take this program to new heights. It’s a very exciting time to be here and I couldn’t wait to say ‘yes’ when he offered me the assistant position.” A San Juan, P.R., native, Gandara graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1990 after a successful volleyball career with the Gauchos as a middle blocker. Gandara was a first team AllAmerica selection in 1989 and second team selection in 1988 after leading UCSB to the national title match. He was also a two-time all-conference honoree. Gandara has also been inducted into the UCSB Hall of Fame. He also represented both the United States and Puerto Rico in international competition as a member of their respective national volleyball teams. Gandara is married to Stephanie Cox who was a standout setter at UCSB and played on the AVP Tour. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Lucas, in April 2011.

Women’s Golf Enters Top 50 Rankings
For the first time since the 2004-05 season, the University of Miami women’s golf team cracked the Top 50 in both Golfstat and Golfweek’s collegiate women’s golf polls. Listed as No. 45/50, the Hurricanes have recorded seven Top-10 finishes this season, including sixth place or better in all of 2013’s spring competitions. “We’re very excited about this,” third-year head coach Patti Rizzo said. “We’re only three years into revamping the program, and since (assistant) coach Koskinen and I have taken the reigns, we’ve climbed over 100 spots.” Beginning the season at No. 74/78, the Canes have been steadily climbing the rankings behind the school record-setting clubs of an underclassmen-laden team. The 2012-13 version have set school marks such as the second- and sixth-lowest 54-hole scores of 877 and 888, respectively. No other Miami squad since 2005 has recorded more than six rounds with a score of 300 or better; this team has 10. With two events remaining and a possible berth into the NCAA Regionals, the Canes are within earshot of breaking the 26-year-old mark of 12 set in 1987. “It has a lot to do with the good team karma we’ve been having,” Rizzo said. “We have great camaraderie and we know the potential for great is there.” The team is currently led by sophomores Leticia Ras-Anderica and Rika Park, who have each placed in the Top 10 twice and combine for eight Top-25 performances this season.

“We’ve been playing in good events where some of the top teams have been and by beating them we’ve been able to raise our ranking,” Ras-Anderica said. “Golf is an individual sport, but in college it’s all about being a team. We all support and help each other out and we all know what we want to achieve. “When someone isn’t playing well, we have each other’s back,” Ras-Anderica continued. “It’s up to the rest of us to hold the team together. That’s what we have been doing this year.” Ras-Anderica, with a team-low 74.23 stroke average, entered Golfstat’s Top 100 collegiate golfers list this week. Through 26 rounds, she’s notched 60 birdies, ranking her 27th nationally in that category, and her fairway percentage of .897 is the sixth-best in the country. She is currently on pace for having the fifth-best stroke average in Miami history, just ahead of current head coach and two-time collegiate golf All-American Patti Rizzo’s 74.32. Park, a native of Fujieda Shi-Shizouka, Japan, is second on the team with a 74.52 stroke average. She ranks 19th nationally with pars-per-round at 12.04, and has a par-5 average of 4.95 this year. The Canes will compete in the final tournament of the regular season March 31-April 2 at the SDSU Farms Invitational in San Diego, before traveling to Greensboro, N.C., for the ACC Championship.

@CanesHoops No. 2 Seed in Austin ACC regular-season and tournament champion Miami Hurricanes earned the No. 2 seed in the East Region in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Miami is making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance in program history and only the sixth in the modern tournament era. Miami’s No. 2 seed is tied for the highest in program history. The Canes were a No. 2 seed in the East Region of the 1999 NCAA Championship. It’s only the third time in program history that the Canes are rated higher than a No. 6 seed (1999 - No. 2, 2002 - No. 6 and 2013 - No. 2). Miami (27-6) will face No. 15 Pacific (22-12), the automatic qualifier from the Big West Conference, on Friday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. Tipoff is set for 2:10 p.m. on TNT. Should the Canes win, they will face the winner of No. 7 Illinois and No. 10 Colorado on Sunday at the same venue. MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET

@MiamiWBB Going Dancing in Iowa The brackets are out and the Hurricanes are headed to Iowa City. The University of Miami women’s basketball team learned Monday night at a selection show party on campus that they earned a No. 8 seed in the 2013 NCAA tournament’s Norfolk Region. It is the second time in program history that Miami is a No. 8 seed, joining the 1988-89 team. “I think it’s huge to be back in,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. “When you’re building, you can do it quick and spike and then it goes away again or you can build a foundation. I think this proves that this program has a solid foundation.” With University of Miami president Donna Shalala and athletic director Blake James in attendance, the Hurricanes saw their name pop up on the big screen at 7:25 p.m., while watching the live selection special on ESPN from inside the BankUnited Center. 2013 NCAA Division I Women's BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP First Round

“Finally we get to play again,” senior Morgan Stroman said. “It’s been so long since we’ve played a game that I can’t wait to play again. One of my biggest goals was to get to an NCAA Tournament my last year here and we did it.” The Canes (21-10) will face No. 9 Iowa (20-12) in the first round of the tournament on Sunday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. EST. “Unfortunately, we have to have the mentality of playing on someone’s home court,” Meier said. “That is just part of the women’s game and driving attendance and peak interest. We’ve done it before and we’re going to have to do it again. But, this is a seasoned team and we’ve played some great road games. I am expecting Iowa’s best game and I know they’re going to get ours.” Should they advance, the Hurricanes will face the winner of the game between No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 16 Tennessee-Martin.

But Stephanie Wagner, a freshman on the University of Miami women’s tennis team, has done a pretty good job figuring it all out. “Before I go into a match, I tell myself that whatever the situation is like, I just have to try and stay calm and try to stay positive,” Wagner said. “Right now, I think everything is working out really well.” Read More at HurricaneSports.com
KELSEY LAURENTE
Although she is the smallest player on the University of Miami women’s tennis team, freshman Kelsey Laurente plays larger than her 5-foot-3 stature. “I was always the smallest and the skinniest, but it was never a problem,” Laurente said. “I never look at somebody and feel intimidated because of my height.” The freshman has already made a splash in her collegiate tennis career. The ITA ranked her No. 51 in the country earlier this spring... Read More at HurricaneSports.com
CLEMENTINA RIOBUENO
The University of Miami women’s tennis program has made a name for itself internationally. That’s how Venezuelan Clementina Riobueno learned of the university she would ultimately attend. “Laura Vallverdu, she’s from Venezuela,” Riobueno said. “She was in the news in Venezuela every single week saying that they’re doing great.” Read More at HurricaneSports.com

Men’s Tennis: All-American Mondays
LUIS GARCIA
CARL SUNDBERG
ANDREW BURROW
PAT CRAMER
The Merida, Yucatan native came to the University of Miami as a member of the Mexico’s Davis Cup team. Luis Garcia began his Hurricane with a bang. After posting a perfect 18-0 mark in singles play and a 12-1 mark in doubles competition, Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1969 NCAA tournament in both singles and doubles. His success in the tournament brought his overall singles and doubles record to 23-1 and 16-2, respectively. For this he was selected to the 1969 All-American team.
Described as a hard-hitting baseliner with tenacious groundstrokes, and being lighting quick with excellent footwork, Andrew Burrow stepped onto the Coral Gables campus after his two year military service with South Africa’s military and as a former captain of his high school team. In 1983-84, his freshman campaign, Burrow, on his way to an overall singles season record of 20-8 earned 6 victories over top-50 ranked ITCA opponents and a seventh over a top-100 opponent. In doubles competition, Burrow compiled an equally impressive 20-7 overall record.

Born in Oslo, Norway, Carl Sundberg came to the Coral Gables campus as the former No. 1 ranked player in Norway in the 14s, 16s, and 18s singles division, an ITF champion of a grade 5 event, and winner of 13 Norwegian national championships. Posting an 18-13 record in singles play, Sundberg earned five wins over ACC opponents knocking off nationally-ranked opponents from Georgia Tech, Clemson, NC State, Wake Forest, and Boston College. In the ACC tournament, Sundberg defeated No. 11 North Carolina’s Clay Donato and No. 10 Florida State’s Maciek Sykut.
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa native Patrick “Pat” Cramer was described as possessing a backhand and forehand stroke that can only be termed classical. Cramer joined the Hurricanes as a former South African Junior Champion and Davis Cup performer. He represented South Africa in the 1964 and 1965 Orange Bowl tournament. In 1965, two years before stepping foot on the Coral Gables campus, Cramer defeated Germany’s No. 1 ranked start and Davis Cup player Wilhelm Bungert.

Track to Host Miami Invitational
The University of Miami track and field program is back in action this weekend at the Miami Invitational. A week after kicking off their outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational, the Hurricanes will host several Florida schools at Cobb Stadium for a one-day meet. The Miami Invitational is the second of three home meets on Miami’s outdoor schedule, joining last week’s Hurricane Invitational and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 13. The Hurricane women will have All-American Samantha Williams back in action after a week off. Williams, who competed in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago, will compete in the long jump and triple jump for Miami. Alyssa McClure and Alaine Tate will be two women to watch on the track for the Canes. McClure, who placed third in the women’s 100m dash with a time of 11.7 seconds last week, will compete in the 200m and 400m runs. Tate will run the women’s 1500m and be part of Miami’s 4x400m relay team that will try to improve off their time of 3:40.85 from a week ago.

Jamika Glades is another athlete to watch for the Hurricane women. The freshman broke 14 seconds a week ago in the 100m high hurdles, setting a personal best. Glades will look to improve on that time this weekend, as well as shine in the 400m intermediate hurdles and the women’s 4x100m relay. Miami’s men will look for another big performance from standout thrower Isaiah Simmons. The redshirt freshman dominated his first outdoor meet, winning the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Simmons set Miami records in shot put (60’ 4”) and hammer throw (168’ 10”) and ranking second in school history in discus ( 166’ 8”). Senior Greg Kaczka will look for another strong performance in the men’s 800m. Kaczka was the high finisher among collegians in the men’s 800m, placing third with a time of 1:54.11. Sophomore Douglas Dourado placed seventh in the event, finishing in 1:55.26. Both times were personal bests for Kaczka and Dourado.
Larrañaga Named Finalist for Naismith COY
Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga was selected as one of the four finalists for the 2013 Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year award. Larrañaga joins Jim Crews (St. Louis), Mark Few (Gonzaga) and John Thompson III (Georgetown) as finalists for the prestigious award. Voting for the Naismith Award will run from March 25 through April 4. The four finalists will be honored and the 2013 award winner will be announced April 7 at the Naismith Awards Welcome Brunch in Atlanta. Coach L has already been named the USBWA Henry Iba National Coach of the Year and the ACC Coach of the Year by both the ASCMA and his fellow ACC coaches. Larrañaga is also a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year award and the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. In his second year at Miami, Larrañaga led his team to an overall record of 27-6, the most wins in program history. The Hurricanes, who won both the ACC regular season title and the ACC Tournament, enter the NCAA Championship as a No. 2 seed in the East Region. Miami was ranked as high as No. 2 nationally, defeated No. 1 Duke and hosted five capacity crowds at the BankUnited Center this season - all firsts for the program. Beyond the victory over Duke, Larrañaga’s Canes picked up a marquee victory over No. 13 Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and defeated North Carolina three times. The 63-yearold guided his Hurricanes to a 15-3 ACC record in the 2012-13 season, earning Miami the top seed in the ACC tournament.

Rowing Opens Spring, Hosts UConn
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Miami’s women’s rowing team concluded its final races of the weekend Sunday. Future ACC member Notre Dame won all four events. The 1V got off to a good start out of the gates and the Canes held a slight advantage over the Irish and Cardinals through the first quarter of the 2000m race. Both Notre Dame and Louisville put on a good push in the second 500m, pulling away from the Canes, who were unable to maintain their position. Miami never regained its footing and Notre Dame went on to claim the race with Louisville and Miami following. Like the 1V race, the Canes’ 2V got off to a terrific start but were unable to withstand a strong mid-race push from their counterparts from Notre Dame and Louisville. At the line it was again Notre Dame, Louisville and Miami with the Irish 3V8+ trailing. The V4+ again showed good progress. The young novice-laden crew was outmatched by the deeper Irish and Cardinal rosters, but they maintained composure and focus over the course. The Canes compete against UConn in a home regatta on March 23 in Miami Beach, Fla.
