From the Director of Athletics Hurricanes Fans, With our spring sports in full swing and graduation fast approaching, the month of April is an exciting time on our beautiful campus. Currently, three University of Miami spring sports teams are ranked in the Top 25 of their respective polls – No. 2 baseball, No. 7 women’s tennis and No. 21 women’s track and field. I want to congratulate each of these teams on their successful seasons so far and wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the final stretch of their respective seasons. Leading off this month’s magazine, I would like to congratulate head baseball coach Jim Morris on his 1,500th career win and his 1,000th win at #TheU. I truly believe Coach Morris is the finest collegiate baseball coach in the country, and we are so lucky to have him. I look forward to celebrating his next landmark accomplishment. With action on the hardwood in the rearview mirror, I would like to recognize both our men’s and women’s basketball teams on their outstanding 2015-16 seasons. The 51 wins by our basketball teams are the most combined victories in program history. I truly believe that both our basketball programs are positioned to achieve excellence at the highest level for many years to come. Our football program is more than halfway through its spring football practice schedule, and I could not be more excited about the upcoming season. Coach Richt and his staff are working hard to achieve excellence this fall and it has been fun to watch this team develop. I encourage all fans to come out for the annual spring game at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale. Kickoff for the spring game is set for 2 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN3. Season tickets to the 2016 Miami Hurricanes football season are on sale now – visit CanesTix.com or call (305) 284-2263 for more information. I also would like to wish the 13 Hurricanes that took part in #ProDayAtTheU this past Wednesday the very best as they pursue their NFL dreams. Finally, I would like to congratulate Will Allen (men’s basketball, 1968-71), Megan Bradley (tennis, 2002-05), Joaquin Gonzalez (football, 1997-01), Charlie Hodgson (swimming coach, 1973-86), Tamara James (women’s basketball, 2002-06), Jon Jay (baseball, 2004-06), Willis McGahee (2000-02) and Kellen Winslow (2001-03) as they were officially inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame. These eight individuals truly embody what it means to be a Miami Hurricane. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, @MiamiHurricanes, or visit our web site at HurricaneSports.com. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Go Canes! Blake James

Four Canes Earn Weaver-James-Corrigan Awards
Four University of Miami student-athletes have received 2016 Weaver-James-Corrigan Awards from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Redshirt senior Kara McCormack (diving), redshirt senior Erin McGovern (soccer) and senior Stephanie Wagner (tennis) are among the 43 ACC student-athletes who will get $5,000 postgraduate scholarships. Redshirt junior Justin Vogel (football) is one of nine who plan to pursue professional careers in their chosen sports and were named honorary recipients. The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of Jim Weaver, Bob James, and Gene Corrigan, the first three ACC commissioners. The student-athletes will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club and presented by ESPN on April 13 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro, N.C. McCormack, who has competed in the sport since she was nine years old, has been a dominant diver for the Hurricanes. After an honorable mention All-American performance her freshman year, she earned three All-American recognitions over the next two seasons. She was also named the ACC Women’s Diver of the Year in 2013. McCormack finished her undergrad with a 3.962 GPA. As a mathematics major, she made the Dean’s List (minimum 3.50 GPA) in all eight semesters and President’s Honor Roll (4.0) five times. A four-time All-ACC Academic Team member, McCormack has continuously excelled in the classroom. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in mathematics and has a 3.767 GPA. McGovern, a 2015 co-captain, has won Miami’s Unsung Hero award the past two seasons. She started 52 of 53 matches over her final three campaigns, leading the Hurricanes in assists as a junior and finishing third in goals as a senior. A steadying midfield presence, McGovern played all but 75 minutes as in 2015. A four-time ACC Honor Roll selection, McGovern has been named to Miami’s Athletics Director’s Honor Roll (3.20) seven times, the Dean’s List five times and the Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) four times. She earned her undergraduate degree from Miami in May 2015 with a 3.772 GPA and now sports a 3.916 graduate school GPA. Vogel, a transfer from Florida, was named to the 2015 Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List. He finished the regular season ranking sixth in the ACC in punting with a 43.0-yard average. Vogel was also selected to the 2015 All-ACC Coaches Team as an honorable mention. He handled regular kickoff and punt duties in 2014 with 62.1- and 42.6-yard averages, respectively. In just four semesters with the Hurricanes, Vogel made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice. He was also named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Team, making him one of just 16 ACC players selected to both the all-conference and all-academic teams. Vogel graduated as a health science major with a 3.098 GPA and is now in nursing school. Wagner, currently third on the Hurricanes’ all-time singles wins list, is one of the most accomplished players in Miami history. A three-time All-ACC honoree, Wagner was an ITA All-American and the ITA National Player to Watch in 2015. She became the seventh Hurricane to reach the NCAA Singles Championship semifinals last season. In 2015, Wagner was both the ACC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Donna E. Shalala UM Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She has made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in all seven semesters, the Dean’s List five times and the Provost’s Honor Roll twice. A three-time ACC Honor Roll selection, Wagner has a 3.682 GPA. McCormack, McGovern, Vogel and Wagner will be honored Monday night at the Miami men’s basketball game against Virginia. The Hurricanes will take on the Cavaliers in a top 10 matchup at the Bank United Center at 7 p.m. For more information on University of Miami athletics, follow @MiamiHurricanes.

Morris Joins the 1,000 Wins Club
You never forget your 1000th. A walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning propelled head coach Jim Morris to his 1,000th career victory as skipper of the Hurricanes Saturday night, as Edgar Michelangeli lifted fourth-ranked Miami to a series-clinching 5-4 victory over No. 17 Clemson. The win was the second milestone reached in a little over a week for Morris, who became just the sixth coach to win 1,500games as a Division I head coach last Friday in similar walk-off fashion against Louisville. “A crazy way to get your 1000th win. In the competition of the game, I had no thoughts about the 1,000 [wins] until we won,” Morris said. “We’re competing to try to win a game, and a series.” When asked to reflect on his 23 seasons at the University of Miami, and if he ever thought he could reach 1,000 wins in Coral Gables, Morris paused. “I really didn’t. It was the furthest thing from my mind,” he said, fighting back tears. “I was following, to me, the most influential coach in the history of college baseball – that’s Coach [Ron] Fraser. I wouldn’t have come here if it wasn’t for him.” With Saturday night’s win, Morris joined his predecessor Fraser as the second coach in the history of Miami baseball to achieve 1,000 wins in Coral Gables. Fraser won 1,271 games in 30 seasons as head coach of the Hurricanes. “You’re following an impossible act,” Morris said. “As I told him, I’m the following the Bear Bryant of football, the John Wooden of basketball. Ron Fraser is in that same category…The only reason I came is because I knew he was with me.” A career night from Michelangeli helped Morris in his quest for 1,000. With two runners on base and one out, Michelangeli laced a pitch from reliever Alex Bostic through the rightside to score a sliding Johnny Ruiz from second. The hit was the fourth of the night for Michelangeli, who finished a career-best 4-for-6 at the plate. “Just trying to hit it hard somewhere, trying to make things happen,” Michelangeli said. “Happened to go through the [gap between] first and second.” With a base open, Bostic (3-2) intentionally walked Friday night hero Willie Abreu before deciding to pitch to Michelangeli, who delivered his fourth hit of the night. “I was just trying to stay disciplined, stay within my approach, trying not to make it too big of a scene for me,” Michelangeli said of his mindset. “I was just trying to slow everything down.” The win was Miami’s third walk-off victory in a span of six games dating to March 18. Clemson (17-5, 5-3 ACC) struck first Saturday night, as freshman standout Seth Beer connected on a line drive home run to center off sophomore Michael Mediavilla to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Miami (19-4, 6-2 ACC) would respond immediately, however, as an RBI single from junior slugger Zack Collins halved the deficit to 2-1 in the home half of the first. The hit extended Collins’ streak of reaching base to 18 straight games. The Hurricanes plated single runs in next three innings to take a 4-2 lead. An RBI groundout from freshman Romy Gonzalez in the second, an RBI double from Brandon Lopez in the third and an error by Clemson in the fourth all led to Miami runs. Mediavilla struggled with command during a 100-pitch outing that spanned just four innings. He walked four batters and struck out six, but surrendered just two runs on the Beer homer. Clemson tied the game in the sixth on a two-run home run from Chris Williams off Miami reliever Keven Pimentel. The Hurricanes looked poised to regain the lead in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out, but an inning-ending double play kept the score locked at 4-4. Freshman righthander Andrew Cabezas rebounded from a tough outing Friday night to toss three scoreless on Saturday. Freshman Frankie Bartow pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th inning, allowing just three hits with one strikeout. With Chris Okey at first and facing the dangerous Beer in the top half of the 10th, Bartow induced a double play to keep the score locked at 4-4. “I was just throwing strikes, letting him put it in play to see what happens,” Bartow said. “That’s what he did. Got the ball, turned it and got him out.” Bartow (2-0) earned his second career win to clinch the milestone night for his head coach. “I’ve seen it on Twitter,” Bartow said when asked if he know about the win being the 1,000th for Morris. “We tried to treat it like a regular game, and we just got it done.”

Perez at Colombian Pre-Olympics Training Camp
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Catalina Perez of the University of Miami soccer team flew to Colombia this week for training camp with the Colombian National Team. Perez, who played for Colombia in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, left Wednesday to train with the team in advance of the 2016 Olympic Games. This is the second round of monthly camps before the team leaves for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August. The two-week camp in Bogota, Colombia features 23 players and Perez is one of just two goalkeepers among the group. The official release, which features Perez in the main picture, on the training camp can be found, in Spanish, on the Colombian National Team website. A native of Colombia who attended St. Andrew’s in Boca Raton, Fla., for her high school years, Perez has been a recent constant at Colombian training camps. The World Cup was her most recent international match competition for Colombia and she earned the start in the team’s round of 16 match against the United States. The 5-foot-8-inch Perez was named the ESPN Deportes West Palm 760 AM 2015 Palm Beach County Hispanic Female Athlete of the Year. Perez led the Hurricanes this past season with 10 appearances in net, earning eight starts. She ranked third in the ACC in saves per match (4.60) and posted a 106-minute clean sheet in Miami’s double overtime victory over No. 14/4 Notre Dame on Oct. 2, 2015. Her play against the Fighting Irish led to Perez winning College Soccer 360 National Primetime Player of the Week, Top Drawer Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week and ACC Defensive Player of the Week. NCAA leader in women’s pole vault honored Newman ranks fourth in the world in the women’s pole vault at 4.50m
The University of Miami’s Alysha Newman was selected ACC Performer of the Week following her opening week of outdoor competition. Newman registered a pole vault mark of 4.50 meters (14-9) at the Hurricane Twilight Invitational that ranks first in the nation and is within sight of the ACC record of 4.58 (15-0.25) that has stood since 2006. She bested her previous schoolrecord mark of 4.41m and hit the Olympic standard to put herself in position to possibly represent Canada in this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio. The Ontario native currently ranks fourth in the world in the women’s pole vault. Her efforts were part of a big weekend in field events for the Hurricane women, who also saw Dakota Dailey-Harris post a school record and nation-leading mark of 1.84 meters in the high jump.
Junior Aiyanna Stiverne was named ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week last week after running a then-ACC-leading 200m time of 23.33 seconds. Junior sprinter Shakima Wimbley was a three-time honoree during the indoor season, joining Newman and Stiverne as ACC Peformer of the Week honorees this season. The Hurricanes are back in action this week at two of the premier track meets in the country, Texas Relays and Florida Relays. The Canes will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete from Wednesday, March 30, through Saturday, April 2, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Hurricanes athletes will also compete in Gainesville, Fla., from Thursday, March 31, through Saturday, April 2, at Percy Beard Track.
Newman earned her second ACC Performer of the Week honor of the 2016 season, winning the award once during the indoor season. She also gives Miami its sixth ACC Performer of the Week honor of 2016 and its second in as many weeks.

WOMEN RANKED #21 OUTDOOR
The University of Miami’s women’s track and field
team is ranked No. 21 in the outdoor preseason edition of USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings. Fresh off winning the 2016 ACC Indoor Championship, the Hurricane women are one of four teams from the ACC to appear in the USTFCCCA outdoor preseason Top 25. Miami had been ranked as high as No. 15 during the 2016 indoor season. The National Team Computer Rankings are complied by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Marks from the previous outdoor season are counted until enough data can be collected from the current season. Then, past data is dropped and only data from the current campaign is used from there on out. Miami has 13 different marks that contributed to its team score of 88.79 points. The Hurricanes also have points coming from four field events. 2016 indoor All-American Dakota Dailey-Harris’ outdoor best mark of 1.78m in the high jump is joined by 2016 indoor All-American Alysha Newman’s 2015 seasonbest mark of 4.31m in the pole vault. Throwers Tiffany Okieme and Precious Ogunleye wrap up the scoring for Miami. Okieme’s mark of 15.90m in the shot put and Ogunleye’s mark of 61.17m in the hammer throw complete the 13 marks contributing to Miami’s team score.

Baseball Ranked in Top Five of Every Poll
Coming off a perfect 4-0 week and a series sweep of Clemson, the Miami Hurricanes baseball team was ranked in the top five of every major baseball poll released Monday. The Hurricanes jumped three spots to No. 2 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll with 715 points, trailing only top-ranked Texas A&M (757). Miami jumped both Florida (No. 3) and Vanderbilt (No. 4), and received four first-place votes. Miami (20-4, 7-2 ACC) moved up one spot to No. 3 in Baseball America’s top 25, marking its highest ranking from the publication since being ranked No. 1 in the June 10, 2008 poll. The Hurricanes’ No. 4 ranking from D1Baseball is their highest since the poll’s inception in 2015. One of the biggest movers in the Perfect Game top 25 presented by Rawlings, Miami soared from No. 6 to No. 3, trailing only No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas A&M. The Hurricanes, who will battle two more ranked teams this week in FAU and North Carolina, moved from No. 5 to No. 4 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll. Lachowecki Named to All-ACC Academic Team CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior forward Gracie Lachowecki continued to add to her accolades for one of the finest seasons in University of Miami soccer history. The Evansville, Ind., native was selected as a member of the 2015 All-ACC Academic Women’s Soccer Team. A Second Team All-ACC selection, Lachowecki was the lone player in the conference to win back-to-back ACC Offensive Player of the Week awards this past season. A nursing major with a 3.71 GPA, Lachowecki has also been quite successful off the field as a Hurricane. “We are so proud of Gracie,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “Not only has she excelled on the field, earning a spot on the All-ACC Team, she excels in the classroom. Gracie has worked very hard in a very demanding major at Miami to be near the top of her class.” Lachowecki tallied 12 goals in 2015, a mark that led the Hurricanes and ranked third in the ACC. Her 25 points also paced Miami while placing her fifth in the conference. In conference play, Lachowecki led the ACC in goals (nine) and goals per game (1.00), while tying for first in points (18) and ranking second in points per game (2.00). In Division I as a whole, Lachowecki ranked No. 13 in goals per game (0.80) and No. 38 in total goals. She logged two hat tricks on the season, including a four-goal performance on the road at Boston College. Lachowecki was one of only three players in a Power Five conference to tally a four-goal outing in 2015. Lachowecki’s teammates voted her as the Hurricanes’ 2015 Offensive MVP for her stellar performance throughout the season. Academically, Lachowecki is a two-time ACC Honor Roll selection. She has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (minimum 3.20 GPA) and the Dean’s List (3.50) in all five of her semesters at Miami, and has once garnered Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) distinction. 2016 SCHEDULE (12-4, 7-2 ACC)
Miami Tops BC, 7-0, for Perfect 8-0 March Record CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up the month of March with an unblemished 8-0 mark by defeating No. 53 Boston College, 7-0, Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Sixth-ranked Miami (12-4, 7-2 ACC) moved to 23-0 all-time against Boston College (7-9, 2-7 ACC) and gave head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews her 126th shutout win at Miami. It is the 69th clean sweep since 2009 for Yaroshuk-Tews, who now has 297 total victories in her 15 seasons directing the Hurricanes. This was the first perfect month for the Hurricanes since going 7-0 in March of 2014 and the Hurricanes outscored their opponents, 45-10, over their eight wins, seven of which were against ranked teams. “They’re being mature, they’re keeping their heads open and they’re really listening to and implementing some of the things that we’re talking to them about,” Yaroshuk-Tews said of the team’s 8-0 March mark. “. . . They’re just showing an incredible amount of maturity and discipline and real commitment to the program, every single one of them, and that’s the key. We talk about not getting a kink in our chain and right now the chain is super-smooth.” The Hurricanes got off to a strong start on all three doubles courts and never trailed on any of them at any point. Senior Stephanie Wagner and sophomore Wendy Zhang, the ninth-ranked duo in the nation, earned a 6-3 win over No. 64 Lexi Borr and Jackie Urbinati.

Sophomore Silvia Fuentes and senior Clementina Riobueno clinched the doubles point for Miami with a 6-2 defeat of Asiya Dair and Wan-Yi Sweeting. Sophomore Sinead Lohan and freshman Ana Madcur were one game away from victory, up 5-4, against Emily Safron and Katya Vasilyev when play was halted. After seizing the early lead, the Hurricanes did not let up in singles play, turning in an absolutely dominant performance. Miami did not drop a single set and lost a total of just 18 games over the six matches. Fuentes picked up the first singles victory for Miami, logging an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win versus Safron. Freshman Clara Tanielian then made it 3-0 in favor of the Hurricanes with the third 6-0, 6-0 victory by a Hurricane all spring, as she took down Jennifer Ren without falling in even one game. “I just think all of them—not just Clara and Silvia—have just done a good job paying attention to detail,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I was back there with Clara. She was so thorough the entire match. She didn’t make many unforced errors and [although I was not back there], I’m guessing Silvia was the same with her score, just very detailed tennis.” Wagner, ranked fifth in the nation, gave Miami its fourth point, officially putting the match in the win column for the Hurricanes. She topped No. 86 Dair, 6-2, 6-2. Shortly thereafter, sixth-ranked Lohan earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory against No. 113 Borr. Madcur tacked on another point for Miami, as she downed Urbinati, 6-3, 6-1. No. 109 Zhang finished off the sweep for the Hurricanes, as she took down Vasilyev, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Hurricanes their seventh point of the day. After playing six of its last seven matches at home, the Hurricanes will now open April with three-straight road contests, beginning Saturday at 12 p.m. at No. 25 Clemson. @CanesVB
@CanesVB Focused on Skill Development in Spring Miami will play two spring matches against FAU while working on individual skills and concepts in training The University of Miami volleyball team is back in action for spring volleyball and the Hurricanes will be focused on individual and team development in March and April. Miami brings back nine players from a 2015 squad that went 21-10 and 14-6 in the ACC. The Hurricanes finished the 2015 season with at least 20 wins for the second consecutive season under head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara. Miami also appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, facing Iowa State in the opening round. The Canes have now reached the tournament in all three of Gandara’s seasons at the helm of the program and in each of the previous seven seasons. Miami will train for much of the month of March and beginning of April, focusing on skill development and advancements in both their offensive and defensive systems. The Hurricanes will also play two spring matches: traveling to FAU on April 9 and hosting FAU on April 16. “The spring season is where each player can focus on individual things, so you are able to make a much more dramatic improvement than you ever could in the fall,’ setter Haley Templeton said. “The spring workouts also bring us closer as a team because we are all working to get better and stronger for the fall.” All-ACC selections Olga Strantzali and Haley Templeton lead a rising junior class that is brimming with talent. Strantzali led the ACC with 51 service aces, recording an outstanding 0.44 service aces per set that ranked 16th in the NCAA in 2015. She also led the Canes with 363 kills, averaging 3.16 kills per set on the season. Templeton turned in another strong campaign in her second year as a Hurricane, recording 1,261 assists on the season. The gifted setter averaged 10.69 assists per set to rank fourth in the ACC. A dangerous server, Templeton ranked second on the Hurricanes with 31 service aces on the season. Both Strantzali and Templeton were named AVCA All- Region Honorable Mention, while Templeton was invited to participate in the 2016 U.S. National Team tryouts. “As an upperclassman, I have really experienced how much spring can help individual improvement and that helps the team overall,” Templeton said. “ I’m personally focusing on running a faster offense so we can be a more dynamic team.” Defensive specialist Sylvia Hernandez, middle blocker Sakile Simmons and outside hitter Brooke McDermott round out the rising junior class and each player has been a contributor for the Canes in their time at Miami. Hernandez provided support in the back row, while Simmons was a force blocking at the net and McDermott served as a reserve. In addition to Miami’s five rising juniors, the Hurricanes have four rising sophomores looking to build off their first year of collegiate volleyball. Outside hitters Kolby Bird and Anna Haak, middle blocker Lucia Pampana and defensive specialist Codi Lee all saw playing time as freshmen for the Canes and they will look to continue their development in preparation for their second season with the program. “We work on more technical things so we are all getting better at individual skills,” Bird said. “We take more time to break things down and understand the system. Each practice is slower and more about development because we are not getting ready for games. I feel like I am getting much better, especially with my passing. The coaches can’t work with us until August, so as a freshman I came in and basically had to learn the system as fast as I could before the season. This has been great for me to learn the system and break down the components of it.”

Aschebrock Finds Success Through Adjustments By Lamarq Caldwell Quick transitions can often be stressful and many times lead to unsuccessful outcomes. But those who can adjust to sudden change are the ones who can thrive in any situation. Hurricanes rower Sarah Aschebrock is someone who knows how to turn a sudden change into a great opportunity. Aschebrock enrolled at the University of Miami in January 2012. As a midyear enrollee, she literally started her college life two weeks after graduating high school. “On one hand, it was good because I never really got out of the school zone,” Aschebrock said. But adjusting to college life immediately after completing high school was not the only challenge Aschebrock would face. A native of New Zealand, Aschebrock was also facing a sense of culture shock as an international college student moving to a new and unfamiliar city. Aschebrock was an impact member of the rowing team as a freshman, helping the Hurricanes win the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. But she was unfamiliar with the other opportunities and activities the University of Miami had to offer outside of academics and athletics. Initially a bit timid in her new school and city, Aschebrock took advantage of the freedom of attending a university away from home and focused on herself. Her independence served as the foundation for what has become an outstanding athletic and academic career at the University of Miami. When describing her time here at UM, Aschebrock related her experience to “progressing steps” in which she kept learning, kept adjusting and kept getting better. She credits the University of Miami with giving her the opportunity to interact with many different people and resources that helped her along her journey. Aschebrock never felt alone in her time at Miami. Whether it was a coach, a teammate or a staff member, there was always someone there to help guide her. Her first semester, former rowing coach Andrew Carter helped her get her feet wet in a “new world” so to speak. Carter previously coached in New Zealand and was able to understand the cultural adversities she faced on a daily basis. Another staff member who made a big impact on Aschebrock was Dr. Rob Seifer, Miami’s sports psychologist, who helped Aschebrock understand some of the cultural differences she had been experiencing up to that point. While several people have helped Aschebrock at Miami, head rowing coach Dave Sanderson indicated that she has been an outstanding example for her fellow student-athletes. “I think Sarah wants to be great at everything she does, so she puts 41

the time and effort into whatever she does,” Sanderson said. “Just like many individuals involved with UM athletics would conclude about Sarah, she never ceases to amaze whether it’s her school work, training with the team, or being involved heavily with the SAAC.” Overall, Aschebrock is grateful for all those who have made an impact on her in her time at Miami. She credits them for helping her succeed. She now prides herself on helping her younger teammates, especially the international ones, who are experiencing the same things she once did. “Everything in athletics is set out to help us, we just have to utilize all of the resources,” Aschebrock said. In addition to helping her younger teammates, Aschebrock is eager to make an impact on the athletic department and University community. An active member of the UM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Aschebrock has taken on a leadership role in SAAC. After initially not knowing much about what SAAC did, she attended a meeting and fell in love with what the organization did for studentathletes at Miami. In addition to providing professional development and leadership skills, SAAC is involved in community service. Through SAAC, Aschebrock has learned that being a Miami Hurricane means much more than just representing yourself. You also represent your fellow studentathletes, classmates, alumni and the University community. As a female athlete, Aschebrock also takes pride in representing strong and empowered women everywhere. The senior from North Shore, New Zealand was honored at UM’s second annual Celebration of Women’s Athletics in January, nearly four years after she arrived at Miami. It was a special moment for Aschebrock, who is proud to be part of the women’s athletics legacy at Miami. “Women’s sports can be overlooked, so it means a lot that we recognize women’s sports here,” Aschebrock said, “It’s improving with time, it just takes time. Athletics here at UM does a great job supporting women’s sports.” “We’re really proud of Sarah,” Coach Sanderson mentioned. “She epitomizes what a great student athlete represents.” Every student athlete is going to experience success and failure, and Sarah has served as a great example that you can deal with these without letting your academics, athletics or life suffer. Aschebrock is set to graduate in May with a degree in criminology. She does not have a firm plan on what her next step will be, but she would like to continue to travel and teach English in South Korea for a year. She also hopes to one day return to New Zealand and join the police force. While her plans are uncertain, it’s safe to say Sarah Aschebrock will succeed no matter where she goes.
Compliance Item: Student-Athlete Employment As we approach the summer sessions, many of our student-athletes will be seeking employment. While it is permissible for boosters to employ our student-athletes, there are a few NCAA regulations that we must abide by to protect the eligibility of our student-athletes. Student-athletes must only be paid the going-rate in the locale for their employment. This means, for example, that if the going rate for employment in a certain field is $20 an hour, it would be impermissible to pay a student-athlete $50 an hour for the same job. Additionally, student-athletes may only be paid for work actually performed. There have been many NCAA violations concerning student-athletes receiving money without actually performing the work they are being paid to do. This means that student-athletes should also not be paid in advance of performing work, to ensure the work is actually completed before receiving payment. Student-athletes who receive payment without performing work have jeopardized their eligibility and UM would need to seek reinstatement among other potential penalties. However, student-athletes may receive the same benefits of employment that are available to other employees performing the same type of function at the job. For example, if all employees receive a company t-shirt and business cards, it would be permissible for a student-athlete to receive the same. We ask that all University of Miami staff, alumni, boosters and supporters who may be employing any student-athlete this summer to complete an employer verification form (available on the compliance website) and to contact the compliance office with any questions concerning student-athlete employment. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Sincerely,
Craig Anderson Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance

2015-16 RESULTS (24-9, 10-6 ACC) DATE
@CanesWBB 2015-16 Season in Review CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team turned in one of the greatest seasons in program history in 2015-16. Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Katie Meier, the Hurricanes posted a 24-9 record and went 10-6 in the ACC. The 24 victories tied for the fifth-most in a single-season in program history and the 10 conference wins marked the fourth time in the last six years Miami has won double-digit ACC games. This was also the sixth time in the past seven years the Hurricanes won at least 20 games. In addition, Meier guided the Hurricanes to a seventh-straight postseason appearance, more than doubling the previous program record. Miami earned its fifth NCAA Tournament berth in the last six seasons and received a No. 5 seed, tied for its fourth-best mark ever. The Hurricanes now have as many NCAA Tournament appearances in the past half-dozen years as they did in the prior 21 years combined, displaying Miami’s impressive growth.

Meier also reached a significant milestone this season. When Miami topped North Carolina, 76-61, Jan. 17, it marked the 200th win of Meier’s tenure as the head coach of the Hurricanes. The Miami program also reached a milestone victory Dec. 20, earning its 700th win with an 89-75 triumph over Indiana. Miami got off to a blazing start to open its 2015-16 campaign, winning its first 10 games of the year for the second-best start in program history. The Hurricanes were the first team in the nation with double-digit Division I victories and were one of the final 13 unbeaten DI teams in the country. The Hurricanes were ranked in the top 25 of both major polls 13 times, peaking as high as No. 16 in the country. Miami was in the top 20 of at least one poll on 11 occasions. Of Miami’s 24 wins in 2015-16, 11 came away from home, tying for its third-most in a single-season. Miami won three-consecutive games all played on the road for the sixth time ever and first since 1990. The Hurricanes were also outstanding at home, posting a 13-3 mark at the BankUnited Center to move to 89-18 (.832) on their home court over the last six seasons. One of those wins at the BUC this year was a 61-53 defeat of Duke Feb. 7. It was the second win over Duke in Hurricane history and Miami limited the Blue Devils to a program record-low 11 points in the first half, holding them without a point for over 11-straight minutes. A prime highlight of the season was the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Miami won two games in the event for the first time and reached the semifinals for the second time. The Hurricanes knocked off No. 14/10 Florida State, 74-56, March 4 in the quarterfinals behind a season-high 21 points from junior guard Jessica Thomas.

VIEW FROM THE U WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Outgoing redshirt senior guard Michelle Woods became the first player in program history to play in four NCAA Tournaments and just the second Miami basketball player regardless of gender to do so. Woods, who tallied a double-double in the Hurricanes’ 83-55 win over FIU Dec. 22, was also one of 30 candidates, including one of just two from the ACC, for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Freshman Laura Cornelius became the first Miami player to shoot 6-of-6 from 3-point range in a game when she did so in her first-career ACC outing against NC State Dec. 30, scoring a career-high 20 points in the 73-44 win. The guard finished the year 47-of-111 from 3-point range, good for a 42.3 percent clip that ranks third on Miami’s single-season list. Freshman Emese Hof logged two double-doubles in her first year at Miami and scored the most points (26) by a Miami player all season. In addition, the forward/center ended her campaign shooting 117-of-216 from the floor, giving her a 54.2 percent mark that ranks fourth on the Hurricanes’ singleseason leaderboard. Hof was named to the All-ACC Academic Team, too. Sophomore forward/center Erykah Davenport tied with Hof for the most rebounds by a Hurricane in 2015-16 with her career-high 15 boards in Miami’s victory over Duke. Redshirt junior forward Keyona Hayes also made the top 10 of Miami’s single-season field goal percentage list, recording a 53.4 mark on 130-of-243 shooting to rank eighth. Additionally, Hayes led the ACC Tournament in field goal percentage, logging a 76.2 percent mark from the field on 16-of-21 shooting, including 9-of-9 in the 77-55 victory against Pittsburgh March 5. Thomas joined Hof on the All-ACC Academic Team, marking the first time Miami had multiple players make it the same season. She was also named an ACC All-Tournament Second Team performer after connecting on a career-high five 3-pointers against both No. 14/10 Florida State and No. 2/3 Notre Dame. Thomas made the Florida Sunshine Classic All-Tournament Team, as well. Junior Adrienne Motley shot well past 1,000 career points garnered a multitude of honors in 2015-16. The guard was a First Team All-ACC selection by both the ACC Coaches and the Blue Ribbon Panel for the second-straight season. She was also tabbed as a Wade Watch List honoree and a WBCA Coaches’ All-America Team Regional Finalist. Motley made The Dawn Staley Award Mid-Season Watch List and the Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List, in addition to the Florida Sunshine Classic All-Tournament Team. Additionally, assistant coach Octavia Blue, a former star player at Miami, became the fourth Hurricane to have her jersey raised to the rafters at the BUC.With just one senior departing and multiple talented players joining the fold for 2016-17, the future is bright for the University of Miami women’s basketball program.

@CanesMensTennis Downs Boston College 4-3
The Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team stormed back after an early deficit to defeat the Eagles of Boston College, 4-3, at the indoor courts of Dedham Health and Athletic Complex Friday evening. With a healthy lineup, Miami was able to give a full team effort to take down the Eagles. The match started of slightly rocky, with Miami coming up short in doubles, signaling a 1-0 lead for the host Eagles. At the No. 3 spot, junior Jesse Flores and Kevin Bondar grabbed the sole win for Miami as they defeated Jeffrey Melvin and Kent Mukai, 6-3. Piotr Lomacki and Nile Clark fell to Alexandre Thirouin and Aidan McNulty 6-2. Max Andrews and Bernard Tefel came up shy against Kyle Childree and Hank Workman, as they were defeated 6-4. “BC was tough. They played very good doubles, but we got off to a good start in singles and got the momentum back,” said head coach Mario Rincon. With Miami facing a 1-0 shortfall entering singles play, the Canes pulled through with commanding performances from multiple team members. Flores took down Melvin 6-3, 6-1, to put Miami on the board. Andrews pushed Miami to take the lead as he downed Workman, 6-2, 6-1. No. 28 Lomacki followed to give Miami the edge, defeating McNulty 6-4, 6-1. It was freshman Fermin Calvo who clinched the win for Miami as he defeated Thirouin 6-4, 7-6 (5). “All the guys competed great tonight. We started a little slow in doubles but the team responded well and everyone won their first sets to give us some momentum, said assistant coach Mark Dickson. Jesse, Max, and Piotr kept up the pressure and closed out their matches decisively. Fermin was so tough to clinch a close match on fast indoor hard courts for the first time.” Kevin Bondar was able to blank Mukai in his first set but ultimately fell after forcing three sets 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. Clark came up slightly short as he fell to Childree 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7). 51

UMSHoF Induction Banquet
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame held its 48th annual UMSHoF Induction Banquet on Thursday, March 31 at Jungle Island in Miami. Headlining the class were 2001 football National Champions Willis McGahee and Joaquin Gonzalez; Will Allen, Miami’s first African-American basketball player, and World Series Champion Jon Jay. The stellar class includes women’s tennis great Megan Bradley, football’s John Mackey Award winner Kellen Winslow, Jr., women’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer Tamara James and two-time National Champion swimming coach Charlie Hodgson. “The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to induct its 2016 class that once again represents some of the finest athletes and coaches to wear the Orange, Green and White,” said UMSHoF President Gerard Loisel. “We are proud to recognize their accomplishments as we welcome them into the UM Sports Hall of Fame.” “The UM Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016 is representative of the excellence displayed by the thousands of Hurricane coaches and athletes over the years,” Athletics Director Blake James said. “The individuals to be honored achieved remarkable success during their time in Coral Gables and, for many, on fields and courts well beyond South Florida. On behalf of the Hurricane Family, I want to congratulate all of the inductees and to thank them for their contributions to The U.” The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization founded in 1966 by eight Dade County Circuit Court judges, all Miami alumni, who wanted to establish an organization that would recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who excelled at their sport and brought acclaim to the University through their achievements and championships. With the addition of the Class of 2016, only 300 honorees will have been inducted into the Hall.
