The Miami Hurricanes family spreads far beyond any individual team or sport at the University. Here is the story of senior women’s basketball player Krystal Saunders and how the Miami family was there to support her. On the night of the Miami Hurricanes’ women’s basketball win against Missouri, Krystal was with family members at her cousin’s Sweet 16 celebration when her mother received a phone call. Kala Williams learned her home had burnt down after an electrical fire caused the home to catch fire. Unfortunately, the family lost everything in the destruction. Watch the video on page 7.

Eight Inducted into UM Sports Hall of Fame
Eight Miami Hurricanes legends were inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame during its 46th induction banquet Thursday at Jungle Island. Prior to the inductions, senior LB Denzel Perryman was presented with the Walter Kichefski Endowed Football Scholarship by Don Mariutto Jr. With the addition of the eight newest members, the Sports Hall of Fame will increases to 282 honorees. The Class of 2014 included Andre Johnson (football, 2000-2002), James Jones (basketball, 1999-2003), Jeff Morrison (baseball, 1978-81), Wyllesheia Myrick (track, 1998-2002); Clinton Portis (football, 1999-2001), Rio Ramirez (diving, 1997-99), Javy Rodriguez (baseball, 1999-2002), and Lamar Thomas (football, 1988-92). In 2002, Andre Johnson caught 52 passes for 1,092 yards – an astonishing 21 yards-per catch average – and nine touchdowns, joining UMSHoF member Eddie Brown (1,114 yards in 1984) as one of only two Miami receivers to gain over 1,000 yards in a season. His 193 yards (on six catches) against Virginia Tech in 2002 is the fourth-most receiving yards in a game by a Hurricane. He ended his career with 92 catches for 1,831 yards, the fifth-highest total and his 20 touchdowns are tied for third-most. Johnson caught seven passes for a career-high 199 yards and two scores to lead Miami to its fifth national title. For his efforts, he was named the 2002 Rose Bowl Game Most Valuable Player. A 2002 All-BIG EAST first team member, Johnson also ran track, winning BIG EAST titles in 2002 in the indoor 60-meter and 100-meter dashes. One of the finest all-around players in UM history, James Jones is still listed in the record books as fourth in career blocked shots (192), seventh in career 3-point field goal percentage (.383), eighth in free throw percentage (.831), tenth in steals (137), 11th in field goals made (124) and 14th in total points (1,356). He twice led Miami in rebounding and blocked shots, and once in steals. A four-time All-BIG EAST Academic team member, he was selected a 2003 Verizon Academic All-American. Another in the long line of great Hurricane lefthanders, Jeff Morrison teamed with UMSHoF member Neal Heaton to form one of the finest 1-2 pitching punches in college baseball history, leading the Canes to the College World Series all four years (1978-1981). He is still fourth in career earned run average (2.37), fifth in career victories with 38 (38-6 overall), sixth in career innings pitched (387) and seventh in career appearances. In 1981, he had a 12-1 record with a 2.93 ERA with five complete games and two shutouts. A three-time COSIDA Academic All-American (‘79, ‘80, ‘81), Jeff was awarded the NCAA’s Post Graduate Scholarship Award in 1981. The 2000 BIG EAST Outstanding Track Performer, Wyllesheia Myrick was a two-time All-American and a five-time conference champion. She won her BIG EAST titles in the indoor 200-meter, the outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter in 2000, the outdoor 200-meter in 2002 and was a member of the 4x100 championship relay team in 1998. She left Miami with school records in the indoor 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash and 200-meters, and the outdoor 200-meters. She helped UMSHoF member Coach Amy Deem’s teams to four BIG EAST Outdoor Championship team titles. Clinton Portis ranks fourth among Miami’s all-time leading rushers with 2,523 yards on 440 carries (seventh-most). He is tied with Edgerrin James for the school lead with 14 100-yard rushing games. His eight 100-yard rushing games in 2001 are the second-most all-time, and he gained at least 100 yards against all five of Miami’s ranked opponents that year, including 122 yards against FSU and 104 in the National Championship Game against Nebraska. His 21 career touchdowns rank eighth in school history. The 1998 NCAA Diver of the Year, Rio Ramirez defected from Cuba in 1993 at a meet in Puerto Rico with $13 in his pocket and soon became one of Miami’s most decorated divers. He was a three-time All-American and a four-time NCAA Champion, winning titles in the 1-meter springboard (1997, 1998 and 1999) and the 10-meter Platform (1999). Rio was named the 1998 NCAA Diver of the Year when he won the 1-meter springboard, finished second in the 3-meter springboard and eighth in the 10-meter platform at the national championship meet. One of the stars on both of UMSHoF member Coach Jim Morris’ National Championship teams (1999 and 2001) Javy Rodriguez is second all-time in steals with 135. He led the Canes three years in stolen bases and led the NCAA in steals in 2001 with 66, the school single-season record. He twice led the Canes in batting average (.382 in 2001 and .376 in 2002) and is second all-time in hits (321). He is third in at-bats, fourth in total bases and fifth in runs scored. A career .369 hitter, his total is the all-time highest career average among UM’s middle infielders. A two-time (1991 and 1992) All-BIG EAST wide receiver, Lamar Thomas left Miami as the school’s all-time leader in receptions with 144 (now second behind Reggie Wayne), second in touchdown receptions with 22 and receiving yards with 2,271 (now fourth). He led the Canes in receiving touchdowns in 1991 and 1992 and his 10 touchdowns in 1992 are the third-highest in school history. He established a UM record with three touchdown receptions against Texas Tech – since tied twice. Lamar had a penchant for big catches in big games, most notably his seven receptions for 107 yards and the winning touchdown against Florida State in 1992. The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1966 by eight Dade County Circuit Court judges, who wanted to establish an organization that would recognized those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who excelled at their sport and brought acclaim to the University of Miami through their achievements and championships.

Stadium parking lots open at 2 p.m. Fans are asked to enter through Gate 7 and park in the Maroon Lot. Stadium gates will open at 3 p.m. Fans are asked to enter through Gate D. The team autograph session will begin at 4 p.m. at the Gate E entrance. The NFL Clear Bay Policy WILL BE in effect at Sun Life Stadium. Please plan accordingly. Football student-athletes will be available to sign autographs. As part of the University of Miami’s commitment to NCAA compliance, student-athletes will only sign the official Miami Hurricanes athletics team posters that will be provided for free at the event. The on-field Family Festival area, which will occupy a portion of the field facing the east end zone, will include inflatables, dunk tanks and Miami’s new football uniform display. WQAM’s Zach Krantz and Alex Donno are scheduled to make cameos in the dunk tank. DJ CX will be live on the field from 3-8 p.m. playing music throughout UNITE.14. Miami’s new Nike uniforms will be unveiled at 5 p.m. Miami’s Spring Game, which is the culmination of the Hurricanes’ spring football practice schedule, will kick at 6 p.m. on ESPN3. The University of Miami has launched the $7 million Football Victory Fund to address the most important needs of the football program. Every four minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer like Leukemia. That’s a frightening but all too real statistic. But, the “cure for blood cancer is in the hands of ordinary people.” Members of the Miami Hurricanes football team recruited bone marrow donors with the University of Miami community during Wednesday’s fourth annual Marrow Donor Drive along the Green. Players handed out flyers and recruited participants from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. during the WellCanes Farmer’s Market. “Giving back to the community and learning how to work together and communicate with each other off the field in order to help a great organization like Be The Match® is something that our organization takes great pride in,” head coach Al Golden said. “We look forward to this day every year because we know that every new person who registers for the Be The Match ® Registry is another opportunity for someone’s life to be saved. “There was a lot of positive energy on campus today and I am extremely proud that our team was able to be a part of that atmosphere and able to register 201 people during the five-hour event,” Golden said. “I would like to thank all of the members in the University of Miami community who helped increase the list of members in the Be The Match® Registry by promoting, organizing or participating in Wednesday’s event. Special thanks go out to our Director of Player Development Ryan McNamee, who continues to do a phenomenal job organizing this event along with the Community Blood Centers of Florida for all of their dedication and effort in the quest to save lives through marrow donation.” The Marrow Donor Drive also holds a special place for Golden, whose teams also participated with the Be The Match® Registry at Temple University. Temple graduate extern Marc Schaffer, who volunteered to register for the bone marrow drive as a freshman in 2008, donated his marrow last year. “Today was a great day being out on campus and spreading the word about marrow donation,” McNamee said. “Our players did a great job bringing energy and passion to the event and helping save lives in the process by working with others and registering new members to the Be The Match® marrow donor registry.” Senior OL Jon Feliciano, senior OL Shane McDermott, senior TE Beau Sandland, redshirt freshman QB Kevin Olsen, senior WR Phillip Dorsett and junior DB Dallas Crawford were just a few of the many players that handed out flyers and recruited fellow students all over campus. Scouting personnel from 30 NFL and three CFL teams attended the Miami Hurricanes Pro Timing Day held Thursday at the Hecht Athletic Center. Nineteen Hurricanes seniors from the 2013 team participated in Thursday’s drills. Dorman Named All-American in 1-Meter
University of Miami redshirt junior Sam Dorman hauled in his career-first All-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, capturing seventh place in the 1-meter at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swimming Center. Dorman, who punched his ticket to NCAA’s with a top finish in the 3-meter event at Zone B qualifying, delivered a strong outing on the first night of competition. The Tempe, Ariz., native finished the preliminary round in seventh place with 370.25 points en route to his first All-America recognition. “This was Sam’s first NCAA final,” head coach Randy Ableman said. “He had so much adrenaline. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a diver jump as high as Sam was tonight.” The performance continued a strong year for Dorman, who won gold at the AT&T National Diving Championships (1-meter) back in August, took silver at the recent 2014 ACC Championships (3-meter), and was recently named the AT&T Olympic Performance Squad ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

Mangum & Newman enter Miami Track record book with big marks The University of Miami track and field program had a record-setting performance at the 2014 Florida Relays. Carlos Mangum set a school record in his outdoor debut, while Alysha Newman improved her school-best mark a week after breaking Miami’s nearly 12-year-old pole vault record. Mangum wasted no time making an impact for the Hurricanes. The freshman was the first Miami student-athlete to compete at Florida Relays and he set a new school record in the men’s hammer throw. Mangum, who placed ninth, Shattered Isaiah Simmons’ record mark of 51.56m from the Hurricane Invitational on March 21 with a huge throw of 57.78m. Newman, who finished second in the women’s pole vault, improved her school record mark to 4.25m. Last week, the sophomore battled difficult winds and came from a short approach, but cleared 4.00m to pass Lauren Koutrelakos’ record mark of 3.25m (4/13/2002). A trio of other Miami women had notable performances in Gainesville on the opening day of the Florida Relays. Shakima Wimbley placed third overall in the women’s 400m with a personal-best time of 52.58 seconds that ranks fourth all-time in Miami history. Thandi Stewart placed fifth overall in the women’s 800m with a personal-best time of 2:07.26, while Jamika Glades finished fifth in the women’s 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.96 seconds. The sophomore finished one spot behind Hurricane alumna Tameka Jameson, who placed fourth with a time of 57.72 seconds. On the men’s side, Gian Ragonesi joined Mangum with a big mark. The freshman placed fourth in the men’s discus with a personal-best mark of 51.37m that ranks third in school history. 25

A day after setting two school records, the Canes finished strong, posting imppressive times and marks at Percy Beard Track. The women’s sprint medley relay quartet of Alyssa McClure, Shakima Wimbley, Taneisha Cordell and Alaine Tate placed fourth with a time of 3:47.21. Miami’s SMR time Saturday ranks second in school history record holders Charlotte Greggs, Dominique Darden, Ginou Etienne and Ena Leufroy who ran a 3:46.34 on April 28, 2006. Miami’s throwers also impressed as Lea Johnson finished third overall in the women’s invitational hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 60.44m. Amber Monroe finished sixth in the women’s invitational shot put with a mark of 15.46m. Ragonesi also earned a sixth-place finish in the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.43m. Miami placed seventh in the women’s shuttle hurdle relay. Jamika Glades, Alexis Wright, Alysha Newman and Kayann Richards combined for a time of 56.08 seconds The women’s 4x400m relay placed 10th as Taneisha Cordell, Shakima Wimbley, Thandi Stewart and Jamika Glades combined to finish in 3:37.00. Albuquerque Among Top UM Students Wagner Rises 13 Spots Miami Hurricanes sophomore Stephanie Wagner rose 13 spots to No. 48 in the latest women’s singles rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced this week.
Wagner was ranked 61st in the previous rankings that came out on Mar. 25, and is 10-2 in her last 12 matches. This past weekend, Wagner took the No. 5 player in the nation down to the wire, falling in a third set tiebreaker to Duke’s Beatrice Capra. Wagner has been steady for Miami (14-4, 8-2 ACC) all spring, posting a 15-4 overall record and an 8-2 ACC mark. Playing primarily at the number one singles spot, Wagner has taken down three ranked opponents and was named ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 25. Six University of Miami student-athletes were selected for the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2014, including Monique Albuquerque. 57 undergraduate students, as well as two graduate students and 17 law students, were honored at a reception in the Student Activity Center on Tuesday afternoon. The 76 outstanding students were recognized for their academic achievement, service to the University, leadership, citizenship, accomplishments which brought distinction to the University and potential for future achievement. The award is another added to the list for Albuquerque. An economics major, she has made multiple appearances on the Athletic Director Honor Roll (GPA of 3.2 or higher), the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA), Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) and the President’s Honor Roll (4.0 GPA). She was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society in October 2013.\ Albuquerque is on track to graduate with her degree in a few weeks.
Seniors Not Done Yet
Miami’s three seniors - Melissa Bolivar, Brittany Dubins and Monique Albuquerque will play their final home matches next weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, but they have much bigger plans for how to end their senior season. Currently ranked 16th in the country, these three seniors will each play in the NCAA Tournament for their fourth straight year. The program has gone to five-straight Elite Eights but this group has set its sights higher. Albuquerque is currently one of the hottest players in America and currently riding a 12-match win streak. Her dominance in singles has ignited the team to 10 wins in their last 12 matches. “We have set numerous goals for this program, both individually and as a team, and we are hoping that they will come to fruition in the next month,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “This team is in a great spot physically and we are ready to play our best tennis. The great thing about having a group of returners is that we can speak honestly and openly about our future.”

Rowing Progresses Out West
Hurricanes competed against some of NCAA’s best at San Diego Crew Classic The University of Miami rowing program traveled to California last week to compete in one of the most prestigious regattas in the country, the San Diego Crew Classic. On the opening day of the San Diego Crew Classic, the Canes glided across the 2000m course on Mission Bay to a pick up a pair of fourth-place finishes. Miami placed fourth in both the Women’s Collegiate Invitational division and the Women’s Collegiate 2V division. “We had some good racing,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Both of our crews executed their plans to the best of their ability and more importantly, learned from the racing.” Miami’s 1V8+ finished fourth in Heat A of the Women’s Collegiate Invitational division. The Canes completed the course in 6:53.217, finishing behind USC, Washington State and Wisconsin. Miami beat the University of Texas boat by four seconds to secure its fourth place finish. The 1V8+ crew consisted of senior Breanna Hayton, junior Devon Phelan-Patton, sophomores Sarah Aschebrock, Caitlin Lowe and Ally Whitty and freshmen Jaimie Snelgrove, Catherine Tayler and Joanna Unsworth. Miami’s top boat was coxed by freshman Lydia Barber. The Hurricanes also finished fourth in Heat A of the Women’s Collegiate 2V division. A three-heat division, Miami finished behind USC, Wisconsin and Iowa with a time of 6:51.446.

Miami’s 2V8+ consisted of seniors Maggie Fragel, Katie Guest and Courtney Keller, junior Hannah Meister, sophomores Erin Ryan and Joletta Silva and freshmen Frida Carlsson and Alex Gunner. The 2V8+ was coxed by sophomore Emily Eidelman. The Canes returned to the water last Sunday for a final day of racing and the 1V8+ earned a second place finish in its final trip down the Mission Bay course. The Hurricane 1V8+ placed second in the Women’s Collegiate Invitational Petite race on Sunday, finishing behind Gonzaga. Miami, who completed the 2000m course in 6:59.95, crossed the finish line on Mission Bay ahead of Grand Valley and Texas. Miami’s 2V8+ finished sixth in its final race at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Canes’ time of 6:58.34 put them behind Gonzaga, Iowa, KSU, USD and Texas. “Both of our boats were able to gain valuable racing experience in San Diego,” Sanderson said. “We are looking to build on this weekend’s racing as we continue our development in preparation for our next event at Clemson.” Following their performance at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Hurricanes will have two weeks to train before they travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Tiger Invitational on April 19-20.

The University of Miami rowing program added three rowers to their 2014 signing class. Alex Ware, Caitlin White-Parsons and Mieke Wilms joined fall signees Paige Hoffman, Taegan Lynch, Jane Moore and Elise Wiley as members of the latest Hurricane signing class. “I am excited to announce three more signees for the 2014-15 year,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Alex, Mieke and Caitlin will all contribute to the team immediately with their considerable racing experience. It has been a pleasure getting to know them through the recruiting process and I can’t wait to work with them next season.” Ware placed first scholastically in Women’s 1x at FSRA Sculling Championships 2013. She also stroked the Women’s Junior 8+ to 7th place at SRAA Nationals 2013 and finished 13th of 94 in HS Women event at Southern Indoor Sprints 2013 White-Parsons will be a junior when she joins the Hurricanes in August, transferring to Miami from Massey University. She helped earn a silver medal in the club 4+ and a bronze medal in the senior 8+ at the 2013 New Zealand Championships. She also earned a gold medal in senior 4-, club 8+ and a silver medal in club 4+ at the 2013 North Island Championships. Wilms earned a second place finish in the JW2x and JW4x at the 2013 Dutch Championships. She has also finished first in the JW2x at the 2013 International Flemish Championships and earned two gold medals in the JW4x at the 2013 Coupe de la Jeunesse. The seven signees are set to join the Hurricanes for the 2014-15 season.

Darquea ACC Co-Golfer of the Month After carding back-to-back tournament wins, Miami Hurricanes freshman Daniela Darquea was named the ACC Co-Golfer of the Month for March. Darquea shares the honor with Duke freshman Yu Liu. During the month of March, Darquea led the Hurricanes with a 72.22 scoring average. She posted her career-first college tournament victory at the 2014 Hurricane Invitational, shooting a career-low 2-under 211. She carded a first-round 68 and ended the tournament with a final-round 71, besting Iowa State’s Sasikarn On-Iam on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to secure the win. Darquea followed it up with a second victory less than two weeks later at the SunTrust Gator
Women’s Invitational, where she erased a sevenstroke deficit with a final-round 67 to finish at 4-over 214. She concluded the month of March with a 29th-place finish at the SDSU Farms Invitational. The Quito, Ecuador, native leads the Hurricanes with a 72.87 scoring average through eight tournaments and 1.39 score vs. par in 23 rounds. She has finished in the top 25 six times, top 15 five times and top 10 four times, while owning Miami’s 18-, 36- and 54-hole season lows. With its regular season now concluded, the Miami Hurricanes will return to the course April 17-19 at the 2014 ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Just weeks before the ACC Championship, the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team cracked the Golfstat Top 25, debuting at No. 25. Miami is one of five ACC schools in the Golfstat Top 25 - Duke (3), Clemson (13), Wake Forest (16) and Virginia (21). The Hurricanes are led by reigning ACC Co-Golfer of the Month and freshman Daniela Darquea, who owns a 72.87 scoring average through eight tournaments. She has finished in the top 25 six times, top 15 five times and top 10 four times, while owning Miami’s 18-, 36- and 54-hole season lows.

Early Years I started playing tennis when I was seven years old back home, in Spain. My father used to play tennis with his friends and I liked it a lot so I started playing tennis with him. I went on to play at an academy. When I was 10 I started competing. I did well enough to go to a place in Spain where all the best athletes of each sport are. I was there for three years with a scholarship. I decided to come play college tennis after I got some offers from United States universities. Why Miami? I came to Miami because I really liked the program, the city, the weather. When I came to college I had 21 scholarships all around the country, in the end I came to Miami because of the program, the city, and the weather. The coaches are really nice and I feel like they are my parents here. If I have a problem outside of the court I can go and talk to them about it. This Year This year I look forward to graduating with finance major. I want to have a great year in tennis and make it to NCAAs and do a good job in the ACC tournament. I want to be ranked top 30. I would like to get a job here in Miami when I graduate in December. It is a difficult decision because all my family is in Spain. I have come to love U.S., I have made new friends. Right now Spain is struggling economically, so I want to stay here and get some experience. 33

Singles or Doubles? I am a singles player. I have been playing singles my entire life. Here in college I play both. I like to help the team with doubles, I have a great partner, Gabriel, and we have played together since freshmen year so we understand each other really well. I still prefer to play singles. Memorable Moments My most memorable moment has been when I went to NCAAs my freshman year, the National Tournament with the team. It was incredible. Also, I remember my first week here in Miami, I didn’t speak any English, and I didn’t know anybody. It was tough, but at the same time my team helped me with the transition. To Be A Miami Hurricane To be a Miami Hurricane means everything to me. I am so proud to be a part of this environment, a part of the U athletics family. I am so honored to be here. I want to be successful here, but when I leave, I will be a Hurricane for the rest of my life. Rituals I only step onto the court with my right foot. I always tape my wrists because of an injury I had, first the left, then the right one. When I win a match I kiss my hand and touch my ankle because I have a tattoo of my family there. RANKED CANES The University of Miami men’s tennis team climbed to No. 46 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released April 8, while senior Omar Aly jumped to No. 70 as an individual. The Hurricanes, who were No. 47 in last week’s poll, fell to No. 13 Duke and No. 9 North Carolina. Miami has downed three ranked ACC teams, including No. 52 Georgia Tech, No.18 Wake Forest and No. 31 NC State. Aly is 13-4 this spring in singles with a 4-2 record against ACC competition. When facing North Carolina, Aly defeated then-No. 25 Ronnie Schnieder, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), in a third-set tiebreaker.

By Jon Rothstein | CBS Sports April 2014 Five teams will rise next season SMU, Maryland, Miami, Utah, Texas A&M Miami (Fla.): Jim Larrañaga should have the pieces to compete for a second NCAA bid in three seasons. The Hurricanes bring in two potential backcourt starters in transfers Angel Rodriguez (Kansas State) and Sheldon McClellan (Texas), as well as a Top 50 recruit in freshman point guard Ja’Quan Newton. Miami also returns Manu Lecomte and Davon Reed, who had solid freshman seasons, along with capable front court pieces in James Kelly and 7-footer Tonye Jekiri. The wild card may be redshirt freshman Deandre Burnett. The coaches love his scoring ability and he could be a valuable perimeter reserve. 6-4 freshman James Palmer is another potential candidate for playing time. Five impact transfers for the 2014-15 season Trevor Lacey, NC State; Chane Behanan, Colorado State; Rodney Purvis, UConn; Kyle Wiltjer, Gonzaga; Angel Rodriguez/Sheldon McClellan, Miami Angel Rodriguez/Sheldon McClellan, Miami: These two players are on the list together because they’re going to linked at the hip for the rest of their careers. Both Rodriguez and McClellan were productive Big 12 players at Kansas State and Texas, respectively, and they’re the primary reason why Jim Larrañaga will have a chance to return to the NCAA Tournament in 2015. The crafty Rodriguez averaged 5.2 assists two years ago with the Wildcats while McClellan was second on the Longhorns in scoring in 2012-13 at 13.5 points. Expect this combo to be a real difference maker for Miami next season. 35

The Hurricanes also took the first two games of its series with then-No. 25 NC State by final scores of 2-1. Through their first 34 games (22-12), the Hurricanes have scored 84 of their 187 runs (44.9%) in the sixth inning or later. Miami is 7-6 when its opponent scores first and have played three extra inning games (1-2). Freshman slugger Zack Collins has had the game-winning hit in three of Miami’s six one-run games, including both of Miami’s first two wins over Virginia Tech (April 4+5).

Miami hitting stride with nine-game streak No. 20 Miami turned it up a notch at the end of March and into the early April, and is riding the nation’s second-longest winning streak into its series opener with ACC newcomer Pittsburgh beginning Friday, April 11 at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes, who have won nine consecutive games, swept back-to-back three-game ACC road series for the first time in their history to vault into second place in a crowded Coastal Division race. Miami captured three straight games against thenNo. 25 NC State at Doak Field in a rain-soaked ACC series, and traveled to English Field to capture all three of its matchups against Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes came back to win in thrilling fashion Friday night (8-7), and also took 4-3 (Saturday) and 9-2 (Sunday) wins, and now stand at 11-4 through its first five weekends of a grueling ACC schedule. “It was a great job by our whole team,” head coach Jim Morris said. “It’s a tremendous league - you’re really just trying to win the series when you’re on the
road. But to get back-to-back sweeps is outstanding.” Miami carried that momentum in a matchup against a hot UCF Knights team that had won 13 of its previous 15 games. Carrying a 5-0 lead into the middle innings, the Knights tagged Miami’s bullpen for five runs to complete an impressive comeback. The Hurricanes would not yield, however, and got a run back on a sacrifice fly to regain a 6-5 lead in the ninth. Freshman closer Bryan Garcia retired the Knights in the final inning to extend Miami’s streak to nine consecutive wins. “In an environment like this, it’s big to get a win. It’s a tough place to play and they have a great ballclub,” senior Javi Salas said. “It’s little things like that this team is built on, and I think that sets us up well to have success down the road.” Miami will look to continue its momentum with a series against Pittsburgh beginning Friday and another against ACC newcomer Notre Dame beginning Saturday, April 19.
Miami’s current nine Major League players are tied for the most of any school in the ACC (North Carolina) and the third-most of any program nationwide. Seven former Miami Hurricanes found themselves on 2014 MLB Opening Day rosters: Yonder Alonso (San Diego), Ryan Braun (Milwaukee), Yasmani Grandal (San Diego), Jon Jay (St. Louis), Chris Perez (Los Angeles Dodgers), Gaby Sanchez (Pittsburgh) and Danny Valencia (Kansas City). Jemile Weeks (Baltimore) and Chris Herrmann (Minnesota) were called up from AAA within the first two weeks of the season.
BUILDING A RESUME Miami has used its nine-game winning streak, including back-to back ACC road sweeps, to vault to No. 23 in the latest Warren Nolan Top 25 RPI (April 10). Miami has eight wins against teams in the Warren Nolan Top 50 RPI, including a road win over No. 3 Florida State, a series victory over No. 4 Florida, a win over No. 10 Virginia, a road sweep of No. 40 NC State and a road win against No. 44 Georgia Tech. With a challenging ACC slate remaining, Miami’s strength of schedule is rated No. 25.
