University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala has been appointed as chairwoman for the Atlantic Coast Conference Council of Presidents effective immediately. President Shalala, who was to take the position July 1, transitioned early after Charles Steger announced that he was stepping down as President of Virginia Tech. “The Council of Presidents has shown tremendous leadership in positioning the ACC for the future, ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. “I appreciate President Shalala beginning her tenure a few months early and I know she will continue the positive momentum through her energy and guidance. I want to thank President Steger for his outstanding service this past year.” All 15 member institutions are represented on the council.

It was the first honor for women’s swimming. Miami’s five APR awards are tied for the most in program history. The Hurricanes won five in 2012 and have won at least three in each of the last four years. Miami has received 30 public APR awards in 11 sports since the program was instituted nine years ago – women’s golf (2006, 2011, 2012, 2013), indoor men’s track & field (2009), outdoor men’s track & field (2006, 2008, 2009), men’s cross country (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014), women’s cross country (2012, 2013, 2014), women’s swimming (2014), men’s diving (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014), football (2010, 2011, 2012), men’s tennis (2011) and men’s basketball (2013, 2014). “Our Hurricanes student-athletes consistently demonstrate their ability to achieve excellence in the classroom and in athletics,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “This recognition is not only a tribute to them, but to the faculty of the University of Miami that valiantly serves to inspire and educate our students. We are all tremendously proud of this accomplishment.” The Academic Progress Rate, a multi-year rate based on the most recent four years of data, is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 201112 and 2012-13 academic years. This year marks the 10th year of APR data for most teams. In the fall of 2011, the Division I Board of Directors approved tougher academic standards, including setting a new standard that teams must meet to participate in postseason competition. The goal of the NCAA’s academic performance program is improvement, not punishment. Not only does the program ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but also it provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school. Under the revised penalty structure, the Division I Board of Directors has set a cut score of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible sanctions. As was also the case a year ago, no sports from any ACC institutions are subject to penalties from this year’s APR release. Among its 2013-14 membership, the ACC’s 15 current schools had 77 combined teams recognized, the most from any Power 5 conference. The ACC was one of only two of the Power 5 conferences to see all of its 2012-13 schools have at least one team recognized.

THE STREAK CONTINUES: THREE CANES TAKEN IN DRAFT Friday’s second round was entering the final 10 picks, then the University of Miami appeared on the screen. When Brandon Linder was selected with the 93rd pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Hurricanes’ streak was preserved. Miami now has had at least one player selected in the NFL Draft in each of the last 40 years. Linder became the first Miami offensive lineman drafted in the first three rounds since 2011, when OT Orlando Franklin was taken 46th overall by the Denver Broncos. Surprisingly, Linder also became the first Hurricane to be drafted by the Jaguars. On Saturday, Linder was joined by two more teammates. Pat O’Donnell was the first (and only) punter taken – going in the sixth round of the Chicago Bears. O’Donnell became the 20th Miami Hurricane drafted by the Chicago Bears and the first since Greg Olsen in 2007. Seantrel Henderson was drafted in the seventh round by the Buffalo Bills. Henderson was the ninth Hurricane drafted by the Bills since 2005 when both Roscoe Parrish and Kevin Everett were taken by Buffalo. With Miami’s three 2014 draft picks, 313 Hurricanes have been drafted since 1938. Once the draft concluded, 11 Hurricanes signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents (UFA): Asante Cleveland (San Francisco 49ers), Jimmy Gaines (Buffalo Bills), Shayon Green (Miami Dolphins), Maurice Hagens (Atlanta Falcons), AJ Highsmith (San Francisco 49ers), Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars), Stephen Morris (Jacksonville Jaguars), Curtis Porter (Oakland Raiders), Justin Renfrow (Arizona Cardinals), Kacy Rodgers II (Kansas City Chiefs), Erik Swoope (Indianapolis Colts) and Jared Wheeler (Carolina Panthers). Drafted and undrafted rookies will now head to their new teams for rookie mini-camps.

A “Whirlwind” Day for Seven Baseball Seniors

By the end of the weekend, 70 University of Miami student-athletes will begin preparations for “the next step” with bachelor’s degrees firmly in hand. Some will accept one-year internships with open arms. Others will prepare for the start of graduate school this coming fall. Many more will be accepting their first jobs, ditching the playing fields and practice gyms to begin their professional life in the harrowing “real world.” But on Thursday night, shortly after celebrating four years of hard work in the classroom at Commencement ceremonies, seven baseball studentathletes (temporarily) swapped degrees for boarding passes and hopped on a plane bound for Durham, N.C., and a series with the Duke Blue Devils. “It’s part of being a student-athlete,” said senior Javi Salas, who graduated with a bachelor’s of business administration. “You have to take care of your student priorities first. That was definitely one of our goals, to be able to walk at graduation. “After four years of hard work, we wanted the opportunity to walk in front of our families.” Salas, alongside Sam Abrams, Brad Fieger, John Lawroski, AJ Salcines, Bryan Radziewski and Adam Sargent, all took part in Thursday’s Graduate School Commencement – not the usual undergraduate ceremonies, which began a day later - in order to join the team in North Carolina by Friday’s series opener. President Donna E. Shalala recognized the small group of student-athletes at the beginning of the ceremony, handed them their diplomas on stage, and wished them well before a 9:50 p.m. flight out of Miami International Airport. “In a room full of PhD students and graduate school students, to be honored by President Shalala and singled out, she really made us feel special,” Salas said. “It was a dream come true.” Head coach Jim Morris said it was important his senior class got the chance to spend a special time with their families. “Those guys have worked hard towards their degrees, and it’s something they’ve been excited about,” Morris said. “I gave each of them the option to walk and fly up later, or to come with us early and everyone said they wanted to walk. The University, starting at the top with President Shalala, makes it special for them.” Salcines, who graduated with a bachelor’s of science in biology, said the whirlwind of a day – which began with a 9 a.m. wake-up call and ended when the plane landed at 12:15 early Friday morning – was a good indicator of his career as a Hurricane student-athlete. “It sums up our four years pretty well,” Salcines said with a smile. “We were always on a tight schedule, always busy, and even on Graduation Day, we woke up early for pictures with all the student-athletes…it’s a pretty good summary of our four years. It was special.” Rewind to one year ago, and Thursday’s “dream come true” might never have been possible for Salas. But after being selected in the 38th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins, Salas opted to return to school for his senior year. The Coral Gables native ended up a team captain for the second consecutive spring, threw only the second perfect game in program history in midMarch, and was inducted into Iron Arrow – the highest honor one can attain at the University of Miami – at the end of the academic year. “Last year I was faced with a decision and yesterday it came full circle,” Salas said. “That was the biggest reason I came back – for that diploma. It’s surreal to think about.” Salas will chase his dream of playing professional baseball when his college season comes to a close – which he hopes will end in Omaha, Neb., at the College World Series. Salcines, who will enroll at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine this fall as part of the university’s prestigious oral and maxillofacial surgery program, said Thursday was made even better with the presence of his extended family in the stands of the BankUnited Center. “Four years of hard work, and all the sacrifices we made to accomplish that, and to be able to share it with the people that guided me through the process – through the ups and downs – was special,” he said. After a quick photo session with family and friends, the Hurricanes said their good-byes at the ballpark and boarded a bus bound for the airport and another grueling ACC weekend against a talented Blue Devils team. Salas wouldn’t have it any other way. “We have a responsibility to our baseball team, and we were all just happy we got to take part in the ceremony,” Salas said. “It was a great 24 hours, and we look forward to carrying that momentum into the rest of our season.”

Fan Blog: UNITE.14 - An Event to Remember The following is a special guest post by Melissa Howard, republished from http://melissahowardphotography.wordpress.com Shame on me for taking so long to write this post! There have been so many things pulling me in different directions these last few weeks. I can’t tell you how good it feels to sit, write this post, and share these photos in complete silence! For those of you who don’t know me personally, I am a HUGE University of Miami Hurricanes fan! Also, in case you didn’t know, It’s All About The []_[] :) My daughter and my sister surprised me for my birthday. I’m one lucky girl! Of course we arrived early… too early in fact. We had to stay outside the stadium for about an hour before the gates opened and they let fans in. Eh, might as well get the camera ready! Unfortunately, we missed the unveiling of the new uniforms. A simple Google search will show you what they look like. Get ready… they are HOT!! As always, thanks for reading! Please check back soon for my next post about 5 simple steps to help you become a better photographer… even if you only shoot snapshots with your phone’s camera!! ~Melissa Howard Photography Original post: http://melissahowardphotography.wordpress.com/2014/05/08/universityof-miami-unite-14-spring-training-event/

It was magical! The Unite.14 event was a spring training game. Half of the field was designated for the game and the other half of the field had bounce-houses, food, games, and a fan shop. We were some of the first ones there… so that meant my daughter got to jump by herself in the bounce-house.

Within minutes, the cheerleaders were out and were so happy to take pictures with their fans. My little one thought it was so awesome she got to hold two pom-poms!

I have been to quite a few football games but have never had the opportunity to be close to the field… let alone, walk on it. It was a beautiful day! Can you imagine how excited I was to be on the field? I am not exaggerating in the least when I tell you my heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty!

Once inside the breezeway, my heart started beating out of control! I was definitely having a fan-girl moment! The players were so polite to my daughter. It was amazing to see her and the players exchange smiles and agree to pose for photos! Being the crazed fan I am, there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity for autographs!

Fan Blog: UNITE.14 - An Event to Remember The mascot, Sebastian, is always a fan favorite. He knows just what he needs to do in order to get the fans going. If he wasn’t dancing, he was playing tag with the kids. If he wasn’t playing tag, he was posing for pictures and giving autographs. The University of Miami has one of the best mascots I have ever seen (no bias, of course!)

We walked around and really got the chance to soak up the atmosphere. All around us was positive, family-friendly energy. The University of Miami did an excellent job creating this event for people of all ages to enjoy! The sun started to set over the stadium and our day had come to an end. The University of Miami Unite.14 Spring Training Event was one to remember!

Immediately outside the breezeway where we got signatures was the fan shop. Her big blue eyes looked up at me… then at the sock monkey… and then back at me. How could I say no? I think it’s safe to say we had an amazing day!

It marks the third straight year that women’s cross country received an APR Public Recognition Award and the second straight for men’s basketball. It was the first honor for women’s swimming. This spring more than 3,500 University of Miami undergraduate and graduate students will begin a new chapter in their lives by graduating to new careers or graduate school, among other adventures. During Commencement ceremonies, which mark the launch of a new era in the lives of students, graduates from all of UM’s schools and colleges will be recognized by name and will walk across the stage to be congratulated by President Donna E. Shalala and their academic dean. With research papers, labs and final exams completed, these students will go on to embark on new journeys. According to a survey conducted by the UM Toppel Career Center on graduating students from last year (May 2013), 62 percent had full-time job offers within six months of graduation, with an average base annual starting salary of $47,700. Canes Score High Marks in Latest APR Report

University of Miami athletic teams continue to make the grade as the latest Academic Progress Rate statistics were released Wednesday by the NCAA. Last week, five Hurricanes teams were given APR Public Recognition Awards for being in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. In the last NCAA APR report, based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years, every Miami program registered an APR score of at least 960 and no teams are subject to penalty. Nine teams scored 990 or better out of a possible 1,000 points - men’s basketball (990), men’s XC (1000), men’s diving (1000), men’s tennis (992), women’s XC (1000), golf (991), soccer (991), women’s swimming (1000) and volleyball (995). Miami is one of only 17 FBS schools (and one of four ACC schools) to score a 970 or higher in football, men’s basketball and baseball. Men’s basketball ranked 13th among FBS institutions, while football had the 25th-best score. “Our continued APR success is credited to the academic commitment made by our student-athletes, coaches and our academic services staff,” Miami AD Blake James said. “We continue to be very proud of our student-athletes’ performance and dedication in the classroom.” The Academic Progress Rate, a multi-year rate based on the most recent four years of data, is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

Monroe Releases 2014 @CanesFutbol Schedule

University of Miami head women’s soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe released the team’s 2014 schedule. The Hurricanes’ 18-game regular season, which includes 10 contests against Atlantic Coast Conference foes, officially opens with a road contest against Florida (Aug. 22). Prior to the team’s season opener, Miami has exhibitions scheduled on the road at USF (Aug. 11) and at North Florida (Aug. 15) “This spring was very important for us in gearing up for our fall schedule,” Monroe said. “This is the most time we have had at Miami to develop the players with a consistent routine. It was nice to break down how we want our team to look moving forward. “ Miami’s challenging nonconference slate includes trips to Florida, UCF (Aug. 24), FGCU (Aug. 29), as well as home matchups with three other Sunshine State foes: Jacksonville (Sept. 2), Stetson (Sept. 5) and FAU (Sept. 7). The Hurricanes’ nonconference schedule will conclude with a trip to Portland, Ore., for the Nike Portland Invitational (Sept. 12-14). “We will face a great deal of talent right in our backyard during the first couple of weeks, which will give us an early opportunity to get out and compete,” Monroe said. “And we have a great trip out west planned to play two talented programs in Portland and Washington.” 11 of the 20 teams on Miami’s slate qualified for the 2013 NCAA postseason, including two Final Four teams in Florida State (Oct. 4) and North Carolina (Oct. 25). “We have an opportunity to play some top-tier programs outside of the ACC,” Monroe said. “In building our schedule, we wanted to compete against programs that would prepare us for the challenges we face weekly in the conference.” The schedule is comprised of 10 games on the road and eight games at home inside Cobb Stadium on the University of Miami campus. The 2014 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals and finals begin Nov. 7. To view the team’s entire 2014 schedule, click here.

Aly Named Second Team All-ACC

University of Miami senior Omar Aly has been named to the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Second Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. Aly, who was named an alternate for the 2014 NCAA D-I Men’s Tennis Championships, has been ranked as high as No. 66 by the ITA this season. He posted an overall 14-7 singles mark and was 5-4 in ACC play. He has defeated a pair of Top 25 players this season and has posted winning streaks of seven and four matches. In four seasons at Miami, he has notched a 33-32 singles record. Individual honors, as well as the All-ACC teams, were determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches. Virginia senior Alex Domijan has been selected the 2014 ACC Player of the Year. In addition to Domijan, North Carolina’s Brayden Schnur was named ACC Freshman of the Year, while Tar Heels head coach Sam Paul was named ACC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. Virginia’s Domijan, a native of Wesley Chapel, Fla., is the ninth Cavalier student-athlete over the last eight years (a tie between two Virginia players occurred in 2011) to be named ACC Player of the Year. Overall, Domijan is the 12th player from UVa to earn the league’s Men’s Tennis Player of the Year. North Carolina’s Schnur joins the likes of Paul Harsanyi (1994), Bjorn Rencken (1999) and Chris Kearney (2007) as Tar Heel student-athletes that have captured Freshman of the Year honors. Paul moved into a tie for first all-time for most ACC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year honors with Chuck Kriese (Clemson), Jay Lapidus (Duke) and Brian Boland (Virginia). Eleven ACC institutions had representatives on the All-ACC team, led by five honorees from Virginia. Duke had four representatives, while North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest each had three members. Clemson, Florida State and NC State had two honorees apiece, while Georgia Tech and Miami rounded out the field with one representative each. Virginia’s Domijan was the lone four-time selection on the All-ACC Team, with the Cavaliers’ Mitchell Frank earning All-ACC honors for the third time in his career. Nine members earned All-ACC recognition for a second time.

@MiamiWBB 2014-15 ACC Opponents Announced

The University of Miami women’s basketball team will host eight ACC games in 2014-15, including two against teams that finished in the top 10 in North Carolina and national runner-up Notre Dame. The Canes will have a home-and-home series with Florida State and Virginia Tech, and will host Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia. Miami will go on the road to face Duke, Louisville, NC State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Wake Forest. The format for regular-season play is a 16-game ACC schedule. Each team will play two opponents home and away, and will face six opponents at home only and another six on the road only. “ACC fans will appreciate the fact that the rival partners, those conference members that will play each other home and away each season, are the same for ACC men and women’s basketball,” said Nora Lynn Finch, Senior Associate Commissioner for Women’s Basketball. “For ACC women’s basketball, the only conference opponents who repeat home and away games each season will be the ‘rival partners’. Long-standing rivalries will be honored, and new conference rivalries will be developed with a schedule that is certain to entertain our fans and challenge our teams.” With the addition of Louisville to the ACC on July 1, the conference will only get stronger next season. Louisville went 33-5 overall and 16-2 in the American Athletic Conference during the 2013-14 season. The Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Championship Regional Final for the second straight year. Thandi Stewart’s Journey to Recovery Stewart overcame serious injury to become a top runner at Miami April 19 was a rainy and cold day in Chapel Hill, N.C. The track was wet, the air was frigid and cloudy, gray skies hid the sun for most of the day. The temperature had dipped into the upper 40s when the women hit the track at 5:40 p.m. for the 800m final at the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships. Eight women positioned themselves in their respective lanes and waited in absolute silence for the starter’s pistol to go off. In the few seconds of silence before the gun, Thandi Stewart’s mind was racing. The junior was thinking about the weather, the stacked field she was up against and all she had overcome to get to that moment. Then the pistol went off and Stewart burst out of her blocks and into the lead. “I did not know that I was that far in front,” Stewart said. “I was scared. When I came around the first time, I saw the clock and it said 58 something and I was like ‘Oh no, I am going too fast. I am going to die.’ Then I was just like, ‘Lord, just give me strength.’ Honestly, what you ask for, you shall receive. I got the boost of strength and held onto the speed that I was running. Not only until the end did I start really feeling it.” The Richmond, Calif., native led for 1 ¾ laps around Belk Track on the campus of the University of North Carolina before ultimately finishing third with a personal-best time of 2:05.20 that ranks second in school history. “It was definitely surprising,” Stewart said. “I was expecting others to do better than me for some reason. I would be proud with whatever I did. I didn’t 33

expect to be a top contender.” Stewart was one of three Hurricanes who qualified for the women’s 800m final at the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships. While her teammates, Alaine Tate and Taneisha Cordell, had more experience running the 800m, it was Stewart who posted the best preliminary time of the trio. Her qualifying time of 2:05.93 was the fifth-best in UM history. Little did she know that a day later she would make her preliminary time look slow. “It was exciting to get us all in the final because we had the chance to place one, two, three,” Stewart said. “It didn’t really matter what order because we are all out here to compete and do our best and represent the University of Miami. I think that is one of the first times that we have ever done that. The potential was there and I was excited for myself and I was excited for them, too. They had experience and I thought I was going to be running behind them.” While she thought she would be chasing Tate and Cordell, it was the rest of the field who trailed her for most of the race. “I love when the underdog wins, but I didn’t think I was going to be the underdog and be up there with the big dogs,” Stewart said. “I wasn’t supposed to do anything this year. I felt like people looked at me and thought, ‘who are you?’ I was the super underdog.” Click here to learn more about Thandi’s comeback from serious injuries that nearly ended her track and field career.

Canes Advance to Ninth Consecutive Sweet 16! The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team is enjoying another long dance. For the ninth consecutive season, the Hurricanes have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships. Miami (21-5) learned late Saturday night that its first opponent in the national tournament held in Athens, Ga., will be the third-ranked UCLA Bruins. As the fifth overall national seed in the 64-team tournament, UCLA (23-2) rolled past Sacramento State and Ole Miss to earn its spot in the NCAA Round of 16. As hosts of the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the 10th straight season, the Hurricanes eliminated Boston University 4-0 on Friday afternoon, setting up a regional final with 18th-ranked Oklahoma at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The match was closer than the 4-0 final score indicates—with the most crucial portion of the match taking place before singles play even began. Facing deficits on all three courts at one point , each doubles match see-sawed until Miami’s three doubles team pulled off an improbable comeback, winning the final seven games to even the match 1-1. Despite the momentum boost from the Miami win on court three, seniors Melissa Bolivar and Brittany Dubins were still tasked with fighting off Sooners’ match point. With the ever-important doubles point at stake, and as teammates and spectators began to trickle over to court two, the seniors started their comeback. Leading 6-5, Bolivar ripped a wicked forehand winner down the alley to give Miami a 1-0 lead. More importantly, the Hurricanes captured every ounce of momentum. Miami went on to win the opening sets in five of six singles matches and came away with its three singles wins by way of Lina Lileikite, Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno, securing the win. Miami continues on its postseason journey, where it will compete amongst the 16 winners of each regional site in Athens. Only one team in the Sweet 16 field—Notre Dame—wasn’t one of the 16 national seeds chosen to host the first two rounds.

As we approach the summer period, many of our student‐athletes will be seeking summer employment. While it is permissible for boosters to employ our student‐athletes, there are a few NCAA regulations that we must abide by to protect the eligibility of our student‐athletes. Student‐athletes must only be paid the going‐rate in the locale for their employment. This means for example, that if the going rate for employment in a certain field is $20 an hour, it would be impermissible to pay a student‐athlete $50 an hour for the same job. Additionally, student‐athletes may only be paid for work actually performed. There have been many NCAA violations concerning student‐athletes receiving money without actually performing the work they are being paid to do. This means that student‐athletes should also not be paid in advance of performing work, to ensure the work is actually completed before receiving payment. Student‐athletes who receive payment without performing work are declared ineligible by the NCAA, and have to seek reinstatement of their eligibility. However, student‐athletes may receive the same benefits of employment that are available to other employees performing the same type of function at the job. Therefore, if all employees receive a company t‐shirt and business cards, it would be permissible for a student‐athlete to receive the same. We ask that all University of Miami fans and supporter who will be employing any student‐athlete this summer to complete an employer verification form (available on the compliance website) and to contact the compliance office with any questions concerning student‐athlete employment. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. FOUR CANES EARN DEGREES Seniors Julia Giampaolo, Alex Johnson and Ryan Shaffer, as well as redshirt junior Emani Sims, walked across the stage and accepted their diplomas as part of the Spring Commencement exercises from May 8-10 at the BankUnited Center.

Julia Giampaolo Makes UM History

First student-athlete to earn athletic training degree in school history Julia Giampaolo was a star on the volleyball court. The Torrington, Conn., native led her Torrington High School team to a runner-up finish in the state playoffs as a junior. She was a three-time all-state selection, proving herself as one of Connecticut’s top volleyball talents from 2006-2008. Then Giampaolo’s life changed in the first match of her senior season. “My first game of high school my senior year I stepped out on the court and played one set and tore my ACL,” Giampaolo said. “That was one of the lowest lows I’ve experienced in athletics.” Giampaolo, who missed most of her senior season due to the injury, turned the difficult situation into a positive. “I went through my rehab process and I decided that it was something I was really interested in so I decided to pursue it in college,” Giampaolo said. Four years later, Giampaolo is the first and only student-athlete in the history of the University of Miami to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. “It was a lot of hard work,” Giampaolo said. “There’s been struggle and there’s been success, but everything has worked out and it was an awesome experience.” As if her accomplishment wasn’t impressive enough, Giampaolo graduated with honors, earning the distinction of Magna Cum Laude. She was also tied for the highest grade-point average among athletic training majors in this year’s graduating class. “It’s a great feeling. I feel proud and I know my family is proud,” Giampaolo said. “I’m glad I know I made it, especially when a lot of people told me I was going to fail. I think I exceeded people’s expectations 37

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

more by graduating with honors because I didn’t just do it, but I smashed it.” “I am so thankful for this opportunity,” Giampaolo said. “From everyone in athletics to my professors and my family, they all made it all possible and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.” Giampaolo’s path to Miami is an interesting one. Despite her high school accolades, she did not garner the interest many would have expected for such a decorated player. However, a former assistant at Miami noticed her at a tournament and offered her the chance to join the Hurricanes. “One of our old coaches, Felix [Hou], he offered me the position here and I knew that it was one of the few programs that would allow me to even try and do both athletic training and play a Division I sport.” So Giampaolo traveled south to Coral Gables to attend the University of Miami, where she would try to accomplish something no one else had done in the history of Hurricane athletics: play for Miami and earn an athletic training degree. Giampaolo knew her dream of playing collegiate volleyball and studying athletic training was going to become a reality, but she also knew it would be a very challenging four years at Miami. The life of a student-athlete is a busy one, balancing classes with athletics and trying to excel at both while seemingly not having enough time for either. Click here to find out how Julia was able to become an exemplary studnet-athlete, succeeding on the court and in the classroom at the University of Miami.

MAY 15, 2014

Giampaolo played as a reserve in her time at Miami, but made an impact on and off the court. As a freshman, she earned the team’s Most Improved Award. That same year, the Torrington, Connecticut, native also earned a spot on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for her outstanding academic performance. She appeared in a career-high 25 matches as a junior and helped the Hurricanes in several games as a senior. Her two service aces against Syracuse on Sept. 29 helped Miami pick up its second ACC win of the season. Giampaolo graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors and is the first Miami student-athlete to complete a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Johnson is one of the most decorated volleyball players in Miami history. She is only the second player in Miami history to record at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining two-time All-American Lane Carico. Johnson has also started every match of her collegiate career, ranking third in program history with 125 matches played.
