From the Director of Athletics Hurricane Fans, As we head to the conclusion of another outstanding academic year, our enthusiasm remains high for our remaining student-athletes and teams still competing in postseason competition. Congratulations to the Hurricanes baseball team on qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for an NCAA record 43rd-consecutive season and earning a No. 5 overall seed. Maintaining a high level of success over four decades is a testament to every coach and student-athlete who has worn the Miami uniform and Head Coach Jim Morris and his staff have established a standard of excellence for all of our programs. I hope to see many of you at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park when our Hurricanes welcome East Carolina, Columbia and Florida International for the NCAA Regional beginning Friday, May 29. Tickets for the Regional are now available and may be purchased online at HurricaneSports.com, in-person at the Alex Rodriguez Park Ticket Office or by calling the Hurricane Ticket Office at 1-800-GO-CANES. May also saw some remarkable individual performances by Miami student-athletes at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament, as Sinead Lohan moved on to the Elite Eight and Stephanie Wagner advanced to the Final Four of the singles championship. Both of these young ladies earned All-American honors and their futures are bright on and off the tennis court. Our men’s and women’s track and field program qualified 19 Hurricanes for the 2015 NCAA East Preliminaries, including many returning participants. Shakima Wimbley, Alysha Newman, Lea Johnson, Dakota Dailey-Harris, Taneisha Cordell, Jamika Glades and Anthonia Moore look to earn back-to-back trips to the NCAA National Championships. Over the past two seasons, our track and field team has qualified an incredible 39 student-athletes for NCAA Regional competition! In order to keep up to date with the all the results from the Regionals, follow the meet on twitter @MiamiTrack. Congratulations to sophomore women’s golfer Daniela Darquea on winning medalist honors at the Bradenton, Fla., Sectional to qualify for the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. I know she will do us all proud while competing on the biggest stage in women’s golf. Make sure to follow her success via twitter at @HurricanesGolf and on Hurricanesports.com. Finally, I would like to recognize the men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s swimming and diving, women’s golf and women’s swimming and diving teams for earning Academic Progress Rates Public Recognition Awards this year. This is the second straight year in which Miami has had five programs publicly honored for APR success. In addition, seven of our 16 teams received scores of 990-or-above (out of 1000) in the latest NCAA APR statistics. What’s even more impressive is that the men’s cross country, men’s diving, women’s golf and women’s swimming teams all earned perfect scores! I could not be more proud of the hard work of our students. Many of our teams are already working towards next year, including the 14 new members of our football team who started summer session classes in Coral Gables. I would like to wish them, and all of our new student-athletes, the very best of luck as they begin their respective journeys at The U. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Go Canes! Blake James

Thompson Semifinalist for Golden Spikes

Junior All-ACC third baseman David Thompson was among the 21 players recognized as semifinalists for the 2015 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, announced Friday by USA Baseball. Thompson, looking to join Pat Burrell (1998) as just the second Golden Spikes Award winner in program history, is the nation’s RBI leader (80) and is tied for the nationwide lead in home runs (19). The Miami native has been a pivotal member in the Hurricanes’ explosive lineup, and ended the regular season ranked among the ACC’s leaders in homers (first), RBI (first), batting average (ninth), slugging percentage (second), runs scored (sixth), hits (tie, seventh) and total bases (first). Thompson was named a semifinalist for the 2015 Dick Howser Trophy last week. GoldenSpikesAward.com -- powered by MLB Advanced Media -- is once again the online home for the award. The website features content devoted exclusively to the GSA, including news, voting history, past winner photo galleries, and photographs and biographical information for the 2015 semifinalists. Fans can follow online at GoldenSpikesAward.com as the list of 21 players is narrowed to a group of finalists on Tuesday, June 2. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference lead with four athletes each on the Golden Spikes Award semifinalist list. USA Baseball officials will announce the list of finalists for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, June 2. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is sent to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total. Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2015. This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of names. Voting will be open until Friday, May 29. The 2015 Golden Spikes Award winner will be named on Tuesday, June 23, at a presentation in Los Angeles. The finalists and their families will be honored at the Rod Dedeaux Foundation Dinner that evening at the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles. About the Golden Spikes Award Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship. The 2014 Golden Spikes Award winner was A.J. Reed of the University of Kentucky. Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as Mike Zunino (’12), Trevor Bauer (’11), Bryce Harper (’10), Stephen Strasburg (‘09), Buster Posey (‘08), David Price (’07), Tim Lincecum (’06), Alex Gordon (’05) and Jered Weaver (’04). Former Major League stars that have captured the award include Pat Burrell (’98), Mark Kotsay (’95), Robin Ventura (’88), Jim Abbott (’87), Will Clark (’85), Dave Magadan (’83), Terry Francona (’80), Tim Wallach (’79), and Horner (’78). 19 Canes Qualify for NCAA Regionals Shakima Wimbley, Precious Ogunleye, Artie Burns & JP Friday leading the Canes Nineteen members of the University of Miami track and field program were among the qualifiers announced Thursday by the NCAA for the 2015 East Preliminary. Eight men and 11 women make up the group of 19 Hurricanes scheduled to compete in 18 events at the NCAA East Preliminary from May 28-30 in Jacksonville. A year ago, Miami had 20 studentathletes qualify for regionals, competing in 15 different events. Miami’s women’s team has several experienced student-athletes heading to Jacksonville. Seniors Taneisha Cordell and Lea Johnson and junior Alysha Newman qualified for the third consecutive year, while juniors Jamika Glades and Dakota Dailey-Harris and sophomores Shakima Wimbley and Anthonia Moore have qualified for the second consecutive year. Senior Kelsey Balkwill is also qualifying for the second time after reaching the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary as a member of Miami’s 4x100m relay. The men’s team also had repeat qualifiers as junior John-Patrick Friday is headed to regionals for the third straight year, while sophomores Gian Piero Ragonesi and Carlos Mangum are back for the second time. Senior Christian Cook is headed to his second NCAA East Preliminary after competing in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles in 2013. Miami had eight men qualify for regionals, tying a programbest set a year ago. Miami has several impressive qualifiers, but only one boasts the top time in the country in their event. Wimbley’s 400m time of 50.84 seconds is the fastest in the NCAA this year and ranks fourth in the world. The sophomore heads to the NCAA East Preliminary fresh off earning a pair of gold medals at the ACC Outdoor Championships and being named the 2015 ACC women’s track MVP. Wimbley also qualified in the women’s 200m with a time of 22.43 seconds that ranks second in the East Region and third nationally, but she will not compete in the event 21

as she focuses on the 400m and the 4x400m relay. Precious Ogunleye is the highest-ranked thrower in the group, as the 2015 ACC champion in the hammer throw is ranked 11th in the East Region in the event. She will also compete in the discus and will be joined by Lea Johnson and Tiffany Okieme in the hammer throw field. Okieme will also compete in the shot put, where she is ranked 17th in the East Region. Artie Burns is Miami’s highest ranked male in the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary. The junior heads to Jacksonville with the 12th-best time in the region in the 110m hurdles, 13.70 seconds. Burns has competed once this season, but he made the most of it. The standout hurdler earned a silver medal in the 110m hurdles at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Championships. Two more men’s hurdlers will join Burns in Jacksonville as senior Christian Cook qualified in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, while freshman Robert Grant earned a spot in the 400m hurdles field. Friday is the lone male jumper headed to the NCAA East Preliminary, but he will compete in both the long jump and triple jump. Heading into his third straight NCAA East Preliminary, Friday is ranked 11th in the long jump and 25th in the triple jump. The Preliminary championships competitions will be held May 28-30. The East region will be held at North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, and the West region at the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.

Denied Twice, Briggi’s Resilience Pays Off

by Eric Todoroff Your first love stays with you for your entire life. It’s a part of you. Even when your heart gets broken, you do whatever it takes to make it work—and when all signs point to seeing other people, you remain committed because you know you are good enough. Senior pitcher Daniel Briggi has endured this back-and-forth relationship with Miami baseball. Despite two heartbreaking cuts and spending two seasons playing for the University’s club team, Briggi kept working, improving his velocity and breaking pitches to earn one final audition. His freshman year, Briggi arrived at the walk on meetings but had sprained his UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) in his throwing elbow at the end of high school, preventing him from trying out. He returned the following year. “My sophomore year I tried out,” Briggi explained. “I wasn’t throwing hard enough, didn’t have the off-speed, so I didn’t get the call back.” Briggi considered transferring after his sophomore year, but his mother wouldn’t allow it. “My parents believed it before I did,” he explained. “My brothers believed it before I did. I thought about transferring, but my mom said no, just to stay here, stay in Miami and make the team.” He returned the following year. “Junior year I was throwing a little harder,” he said. “My off-speed was a little bit better and they gave me a call back.” Briggi leads Miami’s bullpen with an opponent batting average of .117. Briggi was invited to spend the fall with the team. But as he put it, he “just wasn’t good enough.” He was the 36th man on a roster of 35 players. With two years of experience playing club baseball, Briggi considered giving in, calling it quits after two failed attempts. This time, it didn’t seem plausible; his class schedule conflicted with baseball. If he wanted to complete his math major, he couldn’t play. Briggi dropped the class so he wouldn’t graduate, maintaining his eligibility—he did this without any guarantees of making the roster. “He played for the club team and pitched well there,” head coach Jim Morris said. “He had to drop a class actually so he wouldn’t graduate so he would have a chance to make our team.”

22

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

MaY 27, 2015

“Briggi wanted to do it so badly so he made our team and the fact is that it was huge that he made our team, for him number one. He gets here and he gets a chance and he’s been getting people out.” Getting people out is a modest description. Coming out of the bullpen, Briggi is fourth on the team in appearances, third in ERA (1.86) and first in opponent batting average (.117). In 29 innings of work he has amassed 25 strikeouts, surrendered only 11 hits and just six earned runs. Outside of throwing well, Morris believes Briggi’s presence in the clubhouse has been a “great thing.” The guys know how hard he has worked to be able to be where he’s at and to overcome every obstacle he has faced. They respect him. “Nobody appreciates being on this team more than Briggi,” Morris said. For a kid who almost played lacrosse instead of baseball, Briggi has certainly come a long way. His fastball tops out at 92 mph and his breaking ball has improved vastly since his first 15-pitch bullpen try out at the Light. As his velocity increased, so did his confidence. “Junior year of club I realized that this is something that should happen this year,” Briggi said. “This is something I have a real shot at.” After his third and final try out, Daniel Briggi was good enough to be a Miami Hurricane. “The rest isn’t still history,” Briggi said. “We’re still writing it. This coming fall, Briggi’s relationship with baseball will be over. Rather than dissecting strike zones on the diamond, Briggi will be enrolling at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. Briggi received the news after a 10th-inning walk off victory over FAU, in which he pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning and struck out one: “Three [Jim Morris] talked to us post game and right after that I looked at my phone and had an email saying ‘congratulations.’ I was very excited. I’m happy to stay at UM. I’m happy to be given a chance to attend medical school.” As the ACC Tournament and Regionals approach, Briggi said he’s going to pitch as he has this entire season. “I have nothing to lose when I go out there,” he said confidently. “I think I’m good. I want to show everyone that I’m good every time I step on the mound. Just the opportunity to be out there is special.” After being told “no” so many times, when Morris calls for the righty out of the ’pen, Briggi is the one answering yes.

Five Miami Teams Earn APR Public Recognition

For the second-consecutive season five University of Miami teams were publically honored for being among the top 10 percent in Academic Progress Rates (APR), the NCAA announced Wednesday. “Our APR success continues to demonstrate the academic excellence of our entire athletic department at the University of Miami,” said Miami Athletics Director Blake James. “The hard work of our students outside the field of competition never goes unnoticed and I could not be more proud of their efforts.” The men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s swimming and diving, women’s golf and women’s swimming and diving teams earned APR Public Recognition Awards. It marks the third straight year that the men’s basketball team received an APR Public Recognition Award. “While I am proud of all of our teams, I would like to specifically recognize our men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s swimming and diving, women’s golf and women’s swimming and diving teams for earning 2015 APR Public Recognition Awards for achieving national excellence with a top 10 percentile score,” James added. “I would also like to thank the coaching and academic staffs for their tireless efforts to push our student-athletes to be the very best in the classroom, community, competition and in life.” Miami’s five APR awards are tied for the most in program history. The Hurricanes won five in 2014 and 2012. In addition, the Hurricanes have won at least three in each of the last five years. Miami has received 35 public APR awards in 11 sports since the program was instituted 10 years ago – baseball (2011, 2012) women’s golf (2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015), indoor men’s track & field (2009), outdoor men’s track & field (2006, 2008, 2009), men’s cross country (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015), women’s cross country (2012, 2013, 2014), women’s swimming (2014, 2015), men’s diving (2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015), football (2010, 2011, 2012), men’s tennis (2011) and men’s basketball (2013, 2014, 2015). Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year’s release will again includes recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and NCAA Football Championship Subdivision). The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 27. That announcement also will include APR penalties for low-performing teams, teams subject to postseason ineligibility and head coach APRs.

FINAL FOUR! Wagner Takes Down No. 1 Anderson

“We have a joke that I always talk about with the girls. I’ve kind of taught the girls what blackjack is by saying that we’re going to hit on 15,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I went out at the threetwo changeover [of the second set] and I expressed to her that we were going to play blackjack for the rest of the match and that she was going to hit on 15. She was going to play riskier tennis and she was going to play it until the end, and that she would end up with more money in the bank, per se, if she plays that way.”

In set three, Wagner continued her hot streak, winning each of the first two games to make it four in a row. Anderson, a four-time All-American in singles, would not cave, winning back-to-back games to even the third set at a pair.

From there, it was all Wagner. The All-American and First Team All-ACC selection won each of the final four games, capping it with yet another break to clinch the match and earn a berth in the Final Four. “In the third set I just started to play my game,” Wagner said. “I went for my shots, I took away her forehand, [I went] crosscourt a little bit more, I used more of the middle, and just played more aggressively than her.” The win for Wagner was her fourth over a top-10 opponent in 2014-15, as well as the third of her career in a spring match, including the second over a top-five player. She won eight of the final 10 games en route to the victory over Anderson, who entered the match at 27-2 and had defeated Wagner in straight sets Feb. 8 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Wagner became the seventh Hurricane to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship and the first to do so since current Miami assistant coach Laura Vallverdu made the Final Four in 2010. While Wagner advanced to the Final Four, Miami freshman Sinead Lohan fell in her quarterfinal match to Florida’s Josie Kuhlman, ranked No. 13 and seeded No. 9-16, 6-3, 6-4. “Rough day for her,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Nobody wants their season to end, but the future is so bright for Sinead Lohan that I’m excited to back out on court and work on things. She needs to work on a few things and when she does she is going to be even better than she was this year.” Lohan, ranked No. 37, defeated three straight seniors ranked higher than her nationally to reach the Elite Eight and was one of just two freshmen, along with Kuhlman, to get to the Elite Eight. Lohan finished her freshman season with a 23-4 record in singles play and posted11 wins over ranked opponents. “I’ve said all along that this is a special kid. She is such a winner. She is such a great person and such a respectful person,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She is such a hard worker. She hates to lose. She is such a competitor. I am so excited that this kid is a part of our program and she represents us in every facet just the best way that you can represent a program.” Wagner and Lohan became the fourth duo in program history to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship in the same season. Three of the four pairs have done so in the past seven years under the direction of Yaroshuk-Tews, with Vallverdu a part of the group in both 2009 and 2010. Yaroshuk-Tews also guided Miami to its tenth straight Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Team Championship this season, marking the fourth longest streak in the nation.

Women Third, Wimbley Named Track MVP

The University of Miami track and field program had a Top 3 finish for the second consecutive year at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Miami’s women placed third with 93 points at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Championships, following up last year’s third place finish with another strong showing at the conference meet. The Hurricane women were led by sophomore Shakima Wimbley. The talented sprinter accounted for 22.5 of Miami’s 93 points and was named the women’s track MVP. “It’s one of the best feelings in the world,” Wimbley said. “Coach Deem put me in four events and she had confidence in me to handle it so I did and the rest followed.” Wimbley won the women’s 400m with a personal-best time of 50.84 seconds that ranks fourth in the world. Wimbley’s time also tied the facility record, set a new ACC record and improved on her UM record by nearly a full second. Wimbley earned a gold medal, scored 10 points for Miami’s women and posted the fastest 400m time in the country. The sophomore also ran the seventh-fastest 200m time in the world, 22.43 seconds, to set an ACC record and a facility record while earning a gold medal. Wimbley also broke the UM record of 22.46 set by Lauryn Williams in 2004. “I did not got out with my mind set on any times,” Wimbley said. “I just wanted to execute all my races and I endEd up running those times. I’m extremely grateful and excited about the direction I’m going for the future. It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane!” Wimbley also played a key role in the women’s 4x400m relay, running a 50.84 second anchor leg to help the Canes place third. The sophomore combined with Kelsey Balkwill, Taneisha Cordell and Anthonia Moore to post a time of 3:33.00. Alysha Newman scored eight points for the Hurricane women with a second place finish in the women’s pole vault. The junior cleared a season-best 4.31m to earn a silver medal. “I think it was great, especially in my fourth meet of the year,” Newman said. “It was great to contribute eight points to our team score and help us finish third and I feel like I am pretty consistent at 4.30m so I am looking forward to nationals.” Dakota Dailey-Harris tied her personal-best mark of 1.78m to place second in the women’s high jump and score eight more points for Miami’s women. “It was a great experience,” Dailey-Harris said. “I feel like it was long overdue for me to compete this well. I was just trying to get points for the team and after I knew I was going to score all the pressure was lifted off my shoulders and I was able to get second.” Precious Ogunleye placed fourth in the women’s discus with a mark of 48.24m, adding five more points to the Hurricane women’s team score. The junior finished the weekend scoring 17 points: 10 for her first place finish in the hammer, two for her seventh place finish in the shot put and five in the discus. The Hurricane women added seven points in the 100m hurdles as Jamika Glades placed fifth with a time of 13.59 seconds and Kayann Richards finished sixth with a time of 13.77 seconds. Glades and Balkwill combined to scored seven points in the women’s 400m hurdles, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Glades posted a time of 58.39 seconds, while Balkwill crossed the finish line in 58.41 seconds. Taneisha Cordell placed fifth in the 800m to score four points for the Hurricane women. Her time of 2:04.65 ranks third in UM history. The women’s 4x100m relay of Kayann Richards, Shakima Wimbley, Trishelle Leacock and Kelsey Balkwill placed fifth with a time of 45.16 seconds, scoring four more points for the women’s team. Miami’s men’s team finished 11th with 36 points and had several noteworthy performances on Saturday. Artie Burns finished second in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 13.70 seconds, while Christian Cook placed fourth with a time of 14.05 seconds. The duo picked up 13 points for the Hurricane men. “When I first go there I was pretty nervous,” Burns said. “I hadn’t run in an outdoor meet since my senior year of high school in 2012, but I think I did well. It means a lot to score for my team. I feel like I could have won, but I am moving on to regionals so I have another chance to go out there and win.” Miami’s men’s 4x100m relay team of Artie Burns, Josh Johnson, Robert Grant and Christian Cook combined to finish third with a time of 40.31 seconds and score six points for the Hurricane men. The men’s 4x400m relay of Josh Johnson, Henri Delauze, Joseph Ryan and Anthony Wolliston combined to finish sixth with a time of 3:09.24, fifth-best in UM history. MBB to Face Nebraska in ACC/Big 10 Challenge

The University of Miami men’s basketball team will travel to Pinnacle Bank Arena to face Nebraska as part of the 17th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, ESPN announced Wednesday. Since joining the league for the 2004-05 season, the Canes have played in eight of the 11 Challenges. Overall, Miami is 3-5 in the Challenge, with a 3-1 record at home and 0-4 mark on the road. The trip to Lincoln will mark Miami’s third-ever visit and second as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge; Miami fell to Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena 60-49 in 2013. In Larrañaga’s four seasons at Miami, the Canes defeated No. 13/14 Michigan State in 2012 and No. 15/15 Illinois in 2014, and traveled to Purdue (2011) and Nebraska (2013) as part of the Challenge. UM’s first victory in the event was against Minnesota in 2009. The 17th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, played over three days from November 30 – December 2, is highlighted by three Final Four participants: national champion Duke, Wisconsin and Michigan State. This year’s game against Nebraska will be played on Tues., Dec. 1. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN. The Big Ten captured the Commissioner’s Cup last season, winning eight of the 14 matchups. The two conferences split the previous two events, winning six Challenge games each in 2012 and 2013. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges (1999-2008) while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011). In the event of a tie, the Commissioner’s Cup remains with the conference that won the previous year.

University of Miami head soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe released the team’s 2015 fall schedule, which features seven teams that qualified for the NCAA postseason in 2014. “We’re very excited about the release of the schedule,” Monroe said. “We think it provides us an opportunity to compete with the best week in and week out.” After two preseason exhibitions, Miami will open its regular season at the College of Charleston Cup in South Carolina for matches against College of Charleston (Aug. 21) and a neutral-site matchup against Texas (Aug. 23). A home weekend featuring Florida (Aug. 28) and UCF (Aug. 30), both NCAA tournament teams a year ago, headline an eight-match Cobb Stadium slate. Other nonconference contests include tilts at FAU (Sept. 4), at Jacksonville (Sept. 6) and at FGCU (Sept. 11), as well as the team’s final match at home against UNF (Sept. 13) before ACC play begins. “Our nonconference opponents will give us a great opportunity to compete and prepare for the ACC, the most competitive league in the country,” Monroe said. The Hurricanes have a 10-game conference schedule, beginning with road matches against Wake Forest (Sept. 18) and Louisville (Sept. 24). A four-match homestand consists of Clemson (Sept. 27), Notre Dame (Oct. 2), Duke (Oct. 8) and NC State (Oct. 11). Perez Named to Colombia World Cup Roster

Miami Hurricanes goalkeeper Catalina Perez was among those selected to represent Colombia at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, it was announced this week. Perez, who missed the 2014 season while recovering from season-ending ACL injury, rebounded in impressive fashion en route to her first-ever selection to the Colombia Senior Women’s National Team. “I have found that following your dreams leads you to the right places and the right people,” Perez said. “I want to thank Coach Mary-Frances Monroe, the whole soccer program at the University of Miami, the athletic training department, the UM sports medicine team and all of my academic advisors for their support throughout my journey to the World Cup.” Monroe said the accomplishment is a testament to Perez’ determination in coming back from injury. “Catalina not only is a great soccer player but she is an amazing teammate,” Monroe said. “She worked so hard after tearing her ACL last summer to get back to where she is. She had to learn how to be a positive influence to her teammates even when she wasn’t on the field. “Catalina has grown so much and has learned a great deal about the game and being a great teammate while watching. I believe this has made her a better soccer player.” Perez said her childhood dream of representing Colombia became attainable when she began to participate in major tournaments with the country’s youth national teams. But when she went down to the ACL injury prior to the 2014 season, the dream became her “biggest motivation.” “I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by positive people in both situations to help me keep my soccer dreams alive while also working toward my degree,” Perez said. “I will be forever grateful to the University of Miami family.” Perez, who called training camp “an experience in and of itself,” will return to camp on May 20in Bogota, Colombia where the team will train until May 25. Colombia will play three exhibition matches in Denver in final preparation for the World Cup, where her team will take on Mexico (June 9), France (June 13) and England (June 17) in Group play. “I am so proud of Catalina and so excited that she has the opportunity to represent Colombia in the World Cup,” Monroe said. “Playing for her country at the highest level was one of her goals. To make a World Cup roster at her young age takes an immense amount of dedication, hard work, and sacrifice. I am so grateful that our staff has been able to train her to prepare for the wonderful adventure.” Though her team faces a challenging road ahead, Perez is relishing the opportunity. “Despite our ages, many players have been exposed to the fiercest competition,” Perez said. “As a team, we are conscious about what we are getting into and we have confidence that we are ready. The team is focused and driven.” Monroe, who has extensive experience working with U.S. Soccer Youth National Teams, is looking forward to watching Perez this summer, albeit in different jersey colors “I can’t wait to watch the World Cup and see a Hurricane on the field. I will cheer as loud as I can. This is great opportunity for our women’s soccer program, the athletic department, and for the University of Miami,” Monroe said.

To Fans and Friends of the University of Miami Athletics, Now that our University of Miami teams have concluded their seasons, it is important to remember that NCAA rules still affect our student-athletes, coaches, institutional staff members and fans throughout the year, not just during the playing season. That being said, we wanted to review a few guidelines that our fans should keep in mind. Use of student-athletes name, image or likeness: NCAA Bylaws also prohibit boosters, local business and corporate entities from using a student-athlete’s name, picture or likeness to promote any commercial product. A student-athlete’s name or picture may also not appear on commercial items Employing student-athletes: Student-athletes must only be paid the going-rate in the locale for their employment. This means, for example, that if the going rate for employment in a certain field is $20 an hour, it would be impermissible to pay a student-athlete $50 an hour for the same job. Additionally, student-athletes may only be paid for work actually performed. There have been many NCAA violations concerning student-athletes receiving money without actually performing the work they are being paid to do. This means that studentathletes should also not be paid in advance of performing work, to ensure the work is actually completed before receiving payment. Student-athletes who receive payment without performing work jeopardize their eligibility and UM would need to seek reinstatement among other potential penalties. Extra Benefits: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete or their friend or family member a benefit not authorized by the NCAA. The receipt of a benefit is not in violation of NCAA legislation if it can be demonstrated that the same benefit is available to the general student population or a particular segment of the student body. Recruiting: Fans are not permitted to use social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to contact or otherwise attempt to correspond with prospects. This includes, but is not limited to, posting on a wall, using the inbox/e-mail feature, instant messaging, "@replies", "mentions", or direct messaging. As electronic communication technology continues to advance, the opportunity for the supporters of an athletics program to have impermissible contact with a prospect or that prospect's family is greatly increased, however, the institution’s responsibility for that contact remains the same. Please contact the University of Miami Compliance Department with any questions regarding NCAA or ACC rules or regulations at athleticscompliance@miami.edu or 305-284-2692. ASK BEFORE YOU ACT! Sincerely,

Craig Anderson Associate Athletic Director for Compliance

Walk-Off W Ends Run in Durham Second-seeded Miami fought back from a ninth-inning deficit to walk off in its ACC Baseball Championship finale against third-seeded Notre Dame, capturing a 6-5 victory at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Trailing 5-4 and with Miami down to its final three outs, redshirt sophomore Christopher Barr cracked the first home run of his career off Fighting Irish reliever Brad Bass to tie the game 5-5. From there, Miami loaded the bases on a walk from Zack Collins, a hit-bypitch from David Thompson and a single from Garrett Kennedy. Junior Brandon Lopez played the hero in the win, connecting on a one-out RBI single to the right-center gap off reliever Scott Tully to complete the comeback. No. 20 Notre Dame (36-20) scored two runs in the ninth inning to take a late lead. But the Hurricanes would not be denied, as sophomore Cooper Hammond (5-1) entered in relief of Garcia and kept Miami down just one run to set up the late theatrics.

Thompson Named One of 21 Golden Spikes Semifinalists Junior All-ACC third baseman David Thompson was among the 21 players recognized as semifinalists for the 2015 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, as announced by USA Baseball. CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s basketball head coach Katie Meier announced May 7 the hiring of Tia Jackson as an assistant coach.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s basketball head coach Katie Meier announced May 18 the hiring of Fitzroy Anthony as the program’s newest assistant coach.

A 19-year coaching veteran with four years of head coaching experience, Jackson comes to Miami after spending the past four seasons as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer at Rutgers. “Let me first thank Coach Stringer and Rutgers University for the awesome opportunity there,” Jackson said. “This was not the easiest decision, as Coach Stringer has played such a vital part in my life as my college coach and mentor. “This is an amazing opportunity to be a part of the UM family in what is considered one of the nation’s most competitive conferences. The environment has an exciting and contagious buzz that is incomparable. To be able to serve in a capacity with such an extraordinary group of individuals is a godsend.” Jackson takes over the spot vacated by Darrick Gibbs, who left Miami after 10 years as an assistant to take the head coaching position at North Florida. “With the departure of Coach Gibbs, I knew I needed to replace a tremendous amount of experience, and a very special person,” Meier said. “Our players and staff are family, and I’m so excited we were able to find such a quality person and coach in Tia Jackson. This is a great day for The U family.” Jackson, who has played and coached in the Final Four, was the head coach at Washington from 200711. There, she signed a number of talented recruiting classes, and her 2008 recruiting haul was ranked No. 11.

Anthony has been at Florida Atlantic for the past three seasons and helped the Owls make the transition from the Sun Belt to Conference USA during his second year with the program. “I would like to thank Florida Atlantic and coach Kellie Lewis-Jay for the great memories,” Anthony said. “I appreciate all the relationships I built during my time at FAU and I wish the team nothing but the best. “I am extremely humbled and grateful that coach Meier has selected me for this coaching position. Working for the University of Miami has always been a dream for me, being a South Florida guy. I look forward to representing the University, contributing in any capacity needed and working with a first class program.” During his three years at FAU, Anthony primarily worked with the team’s guards, and did so with great success. This past season, the Owls had one backcourt player named First Team AllConference USA and another selected to the league’s All-Freshman Team. Anthony played a key part in the Owls’ scouting, defensive game planning and academic mentor-

After the 2011 season, Jackson joined the Rutgers coaching staff and helped guide the Scarlet Knights to ing, while also handling all of the team’s scheduling. a trio of postseason appearances, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament. This past season, Rutgers advanced to the second round for the first time since 2011. In Jackson’s first two years at Rutgers, the A stellar recruiter, Anthony helped FAU sign the second-ranked recruiting class in the conference Scarlet Knights signed the nation’s third-ranked recruiting class. in 2014, according to College Girls Basketball Report. “Tia is an incredibly significant hire for me personally and for this program,” Meier said. “We have positioned Miami as one of the nation’s elite basketball programs and hiring Tia pushes us over the top. She’s a tremendous recruiter, terrific with her X’s and O’s, and brings head coaching experience that will enhance our program.” Jackson began her coaching career as an assistant at VCU just one year after graduating from college. She worked for the Rams from 1996-1999. After her three seasons in Richmond, Va., Jackson spent one year as an assistant coach at Stanford, working under another Hall of Fame coach, Tara VanDerveer, at one of the nation’s most tradition-rich programs. The Cardinal made the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Jackson’s lone season in Palo Alto, Calif. Jackson then moved south in the Golden State and joined the staff at UCLA, where she was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. In five years with the Bruins, Jackson helped the program sign two top-10 recruiting classes and ink four McDonald’s and/or WBCA All-Americans. UCLA made the NCAA Tournament in 2004, its first appearance in four years. After five seasons at UCLA, Jackson went to Duke, where she worked an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2005-07. In both of her years in Durham, N.C., Jackson helped the Blue Devils sign topfive recruiting classes featuring a quartet of McDonald’s All-Americans.

In Anthony’s second season at FAU, he aided in guiding the Owls to their second winning season since 2005-06 and their second-most wins during that stretch. “Fitz is a rising star in this profession. He works hard, is extremely loyal and has a passion for the game that is unmatched,” Meier said. “His energy and work ethic will make an immediate impact on this program. Our players are going to love being in the gym with him.” Well-connected in South Florida, Anthony was the head coach at Coral Springs Charter School for two years, prior to making the move to FAU in August 2012. He led the Panthers to 20-wins seasons both years and was named the Broward County Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2012. Anthony directed the Panthers to their first ever regional and district championships in 2012, as well as their first berth in the Final Four of the state tournament. Four of players he coaches at Coral Springs Charter School went on to play Division I basketball.

Duke made the NCAA Championship for the second time program history in Jackson’s first year on staff, and reached the Sweet 16 the following season. She will now be returning to the ACC eight years later.

Additionally, Anthony has experience coaching AAU basketball in South Florida and won over 80 percent of his games on the sidelines. Seven of his players proceeded to play collegiately in the ACC, SEC or Big 12.

“I have known Kate for over a decade now, and respect all that she has done and continues to do for young aspiring women,” Jackson said. “How she breathes life into everyone around her is nothing short of admirable. I am honored to be joining such a dynamic family, and want to give a major thank you to Kate and the Miami Hurricanes.”

“Fitz will help us make huge strides in recruiting, as he has worked he way up the ranks in Florida via both the high school and AAU levels,” Meier said. “Most importantly, Fitz has always wanted to be a Miami Hurricane.”

Originally from Salisbury, Md., Jackson scored 3,108 points in her career at Mardela Springs High School, before moving on to play for Stringer at Iowa. The Hawkeyes finished top-25 four times in Jackson’s career and made the Final Four in 1993, ending the season with a 27-4 record. She was named to the Mideast Regional All-Tournament team that year.

Born in Antigua, Anthony moved to Boca Raton, Fla. at age 12. He played basketball at Olympic Heights High School and then at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where he graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Jackson averaged 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as a Hawkeye and graduated from Iowa in 1995. A two-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, Jackson ranks top-25 all-time at Iowa in points and rebounds, as well as No. 12 in steals. She was the ninth overall pick in the 1997 WNBA Draft.

Anthony is the second assistant coach to join the Miami staff this month, after 19-year coaching veteran Tia Jackson was hired May 7.

“As with every hire, we try to find the best person who will also be a great fit for this university,” Meier said. “I’ve known and admired Tia for years and her resume is outstanding, but this hire was all about the players. Tia will be a great sounding board and a great advisor, in addition to bringing a depth of basketball knowledge.”

“I think this staff is just plain awesome,” Meier said.

University of Miami Coach Mario Rincon has added transfer Max Andrews to the men’s tennis team, the school announced Wednesday. “We are very excited to have Max join our program,” said Rincon. “He comes to UM with two years of college tennis on his resume, and many good matches under his belt. Max has a complete game that will continue to improve, and will make an immediate impact to our team in both singles and doubles.” Andrews transferred from Rice University and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2015-16 season. The 6-foot-2-inch Andrews closed a successful sophomore season at Rice by earning All C-USA doubles honors. He was second on the team with a 13-8 mark while playing primarily at No. 2 in the lineup. The native of Manchester, England, finished the year by going unbeaten in eight of his last nine matches. In his rookie year, he posted eight wins in singles during the spring, primarily playing at Nos. 3 and 4 in the lineup. Prior to Rice, Andrews attended Academia Sanchez-Casal in El Prat de Llobregat, Spain. His highest ATP world ranking is 1553 and he was listed as high as No. 687 in the ITF Juniors rankings. W. Tennis Earns 12th Straight Top-15 Finish

The ITA released its final rankings of the 2015 season Tuesday afternoon and the University of Miami women’s tennis took the No. 15 spot in the nation. This marks the 12th consecutive season the Hurricanes have finished in the top 15 and the 13th year in a row Miami has landed in the final top 25. The entire stretch has come under the direction of Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, who just wrapped up her 14th season as the team’s head coach. Yaroshuk-Tews also guided Miami (18-7, 12-2 ACC) to its 10th straight Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Team Championship and the Hurricanes hosted the first two rounds of the tournament for the 11th year in a row. In addition, Miami won 17-plus matches and lost seven or fewer for the 13th consecutive year. This was also the 11th straight year—each one Miami has been in the Atlantic Coast Conference—the Hurricanes finished in the top four in the ACC, taking the No. 2 position in 2015. A pair of streaks Miami extended this year date back beyond Yaroshuk-Tews’ tenure, as the program has now both made the NCAA Team Championship and finished at least .500 for 20 consecutive seasons. Miami was one of six ACC schools to close the 2015 season in the top 25, good for the second most of any conference. All six teams finished in the top 20, the most of any league in the nation. The Hurricanes posted six wins over teams in the final top 25, with road wins at No. 9 Virginia and No. 20 Georgia Tech, a neutral site victory against No. 14 Alabama, and home wins over No. 18 Clemson, No. 19 Duke, and No. 24 Ole Miss. Miami dropped more than one point in just two of those six matches and conceded three in only one. Ten of the Hurricanes’ 18 victories this year came against teams that finished the season in the top 50. The final singles and doubles national rankings will be released Tuesday, June 3. Miami had two players, freshman Sinead Lohan and junior Stephanie Wagner, reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, with Wagner advancing to the Final Four.
