Johnson Named to College Football Hall of Fame
Former University of Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson has been named one of 17 former players and coaches that will be inducted in the 2012 class of the College Football Hall of Fame, as announced Tuesday by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame. Johnson becomes the third coach from the Hurricanes to earn such an honor, joining Jack Harding (1980) and Andy Gustafson (1985). In his five seasons at UM (1984-88), Johnson compiled a 52-9 record and guided the Canes to the 1987 National Championship. That season, Miami went a perfect 12-0 and defeated six nationally ranked teams, including a 2014 victory over then-No. 1 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. After his team’s win over OU, Johnson stated, “We played our way to this championship. We have the best record versus anybody in the country . . . We beat Oklahoma three in a row, Florida State and Notre Dame three in a row, Florida a couple . . . What is sweetest is that we did it as a team. We lost starters and had other guys come in and played magnificently.” Including his five seasons as the head coach of Oklahoma State, Johnson’s career collegiate record stands at 81-34-3. Johnson left Miami after the 1988 season to replace the legendary Tom Landry as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. His five-year stay in Dallas culminated with back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1992 and 1993. Johnson is one of just six men to coach consecutive Super Bowl champions. Johnson becomes the ninth man with ties to UM to be selected into the College Football Hall of Fame, including players Don Bosseler (1990), Ted Hendricks (1987), Gino Torretta (2009), Arnold Tucker (2008), and Bennie Blades (2006) and Russell Maryland (2011) – who both were coached by Johnson.

The University of Miami men’s basketball team will host Michigan State University in the 14th Annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the BankUnited Center. “We are proud to be associated with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge,” said assistant Coach Chris Caputo. “Having Michigan State come to Coral Gables is a great opportunity for our program to play a Top 25-caliber opponent on our home floor, in front of our UM fans. K atie Meier Meier To Lead 2012 USA Basketball U18 Women University of Miami head coach Katie Meier, the 2011 Associated Press coNational Coach of the Year, has been selected to serve as head coach for the 2012 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team; while collegiate head coaches Nikki Caldwell of Louisiana State University and Kelly Graves of Gonzaga University will act as assistant coaches for the U18 squad. The coaches were selected by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee. The USA U18 National Team will compete in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Aug. 15-19, in hopes of securing a berth in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women (dates and site TBD). The FIBA Americas U18 Championship will feature eight national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, with the top three finishing teams qualifying for the 2013 FIBA U19 Worlds. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1994. Trials to select the 12-member USA squad will be held May 18-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team will regroup at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., for its first training camp from May 28-June 2. The USA will then return to the USOTC for its final training camp Aug. 3-14, prior to traveling to Puerto Rico for the competition.
“The committee is very enthusiastic about this coaching staff,” said USA Junior National Team Committee chair Sue Donohoe, executive director of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. “In Katie Meier, Nikki Caldwell and Kelly Graves, we have three very good coaches who have proven they have what it takes to represent USA Basketball. They are enthusiastic, smart, driven to succeed and know what it takes to win. They bring extensive experience and diverse perspectives to our team, which will allow them to take a group of 12 gifted basketball players and mold them into a single unit. We feel extremely confident that these three coaches will not only be able to continue the USA’s five consecutive gold medal streak at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, they’ll do so in a manner that is representative of USA Basketball.” “I was so touched when I was asked to do this,” said Meier. “I was really honored. That was my first reaction, and then it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger when you think about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and whom you’re representing. It’s just an incredible honor. I’m very, very excited. “I think my coaching style has a lot to do with the selection. It’s a very fun style. It’s very up-tempo. I think it takes advantage of the talent pool that we’ll have. The players will certainly be able to show how skilled and how special they are. That’s a big part of it, it’s catered to the players’
abilities and you can tweak it with the strengths and weaknesses of your team. It’s a really flexible style. It’s really fun to coach, and I think it’s really fun to play as well. “I think this is a superstar staff. I think Nikki Caldwell and Kelly Graves make this an incredible staff. I have so much respect for them. It’s definitely going to be a ‘working together’ deal. They bring so much to the table. Kelly and I just played against each other in the NCAAs, so we had a nice little chat about us working together while we were out in Spokane. They’re just so bright. They’re hard working. I think there’s going to be so much creativity. There are three very different styles of basketball that are all going to merge together and I think it’s going to be phenomenal. I think it’s an amazing staff. I was stunned when I heard who the two assistants would be. They’re just so fantastic.” In addition to Donohoe, the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee includes NCAA appointees Joanne Boyle (University of Virginia), Coquese Washington (Penn State University) and Connie Yori (University of Nebraska). The athlete representative is current Virginia Commonwealth University head coach Beth Cunninham (1999 USA Pan American Games Team member).

People might be surprised to know that I speak some Spanish. If you listen during games, then you might be able to hear me and some of my teammates speaking in Spanish to one another. My favorite thing about being part of the “U” family is being around my teammates and the respect people give to us for being part of a program with such a storied and successful history. We really are a family on the team. We’re around each other all day at the ballpark; we go out together; and we always hang out with one another. At the U, I’ve learned so much from my coaches and teammates. They’ve taught me how to deal with on and off the field issues. I can’t thank them enough for making me the person and player I am today. My favorite song right now is Hustlin’ by Wiz Khalifa. It’s been out for a while now, but every time I listen, it still goes hard. The song no one would believe I have on my iPod is Nicki Minaj Super Bass. I always go back to my house in Pompano Beach every Sunday. My cousins live there with my dad and it gets packed when my brothers come back from college. So, there’s always something to do, and it’s always a good time. One thing that everyone should know about Miami baseball is that we are one of the hardest working teams in the nation. We’re at the field all day working out and practicing trying to improve so we can make it to Omaha this year. One thing people may not know about me is that I’m afraid of sharks. I’ve always been scared of them because when you’re in the water you can’t see them coming so it’s hard to protect yourself. Competition is in everything. It’s in athletics and in people’s everyday lives. There is competition at every position on the baseball team. Everyone is fighting to be the best and no one wants to lose. I believe competition brings out the best in you. If I could spend a day with anyone, then it would be my mom. I would thank her for everything she’s done for my dad, my brothers and me and tell her that I love her. The greatest advice I’ve ever been given is “to live everyday like it’s your last and treat others as though it’s the last time you’ll ever see them because you never know when that day will come.” My pre-start superstition is listening to music in the locker room which helps get me pumped up for the game. Right before the game starts, I’ll look up to the sky and say a prayer because I know my mom is watching my game from above.
To me, Miami is my second home. It’s a big city with many different cultures and has an exciting night life. I lived in South Florida which is just 45 minutes away my entire life. So, it wasn’t that big of an adjustment to move here for college. Growing up, I played baseball and basketball up until my junior year of high school. I stopped playing basketball and focused solely on baseball after that because I realized I could make it a lot further in baseball. Some people say the pitching staff is going to lead our team this year. We also have good hitters and we’re all working hard. So, I believe we are going to have a great season. I was raised by a great family along with my two brothers in Pompano Beach, Fla. which I like to refer to as
“PNO”. I have a lot of love for my city, and my city loves me back. Pompano will always be considered my home. My goals for the season are to improve my statistics from last season and go to Omaha, Neb. and bring a national championship back to the “U”. Playing baseball has given me great memories and created opportunities. Playing baseball at the “U” is something I consider special because of all the pride and tradition associated with the program. Baseball is what got me to the “U”, and hopefully baseball will continue to give me many more opportunities.
E.J. Hadrick track
Senior middle distance runner E.J. Hadrick has always been a Miami Hurricane fan and is now living the dream as a Hurricane student-athlete. Hadrick has been running the 400 and 800 meter runs ever since sixth grade and has always been focused on his goals. It wasn’t until his sophomore year of high school, however, that he realized he has a future in track and field. “My sophomore year, I dropped a lot of time in all my races and I realized that I could keep improving and working hard and hopefully make it to a Division I track team. I wasn’t going to accept anything below Division I,” explained Hadrick. He continued to push himself and improve every year. He set a goal for himself to win a medal at the Pennsylvania state championships and came close his sophomore and junior years. His senior year, his hard work paid off as he won three medals at the state championships. Hadrick credits his high school coach Miles Burrell as being a serious inspiration to him. Burrell was one spot away from going to the Olympics to compete as a wrestler, but decided to stay back in Norristown and build up a reputable track and field program. In his time there, they went from having no recognition in the state to being one of the most feared teams in the state by the time E.J. graduated. The program’s successes as well as Hadrick’s personal success in the state championships garnered some serious attention from Division I schools. There was one school in particular, however, that he was mot interested in. “I started liking Miami in 2000 because I was just a kid and really liked the colors. Then I became a big fan of the 2001 football team and it was all about Miami after that,” said Hadrick. At first, however, his parents wanted to keep him as close to home as possible, citing that the distance between Miami and his hometown of Norristown, Pa., was just too far. When assistant track and field coach Damon Griffiths called him to offer a full scholarship, the Hadricks decided that distance was not such a big factor after all. Since coming to Miami, Hadrick has thoroughly enjoyed himself and improved tremendously as a runner. E.J. has a good track record of accomplishing his goals and with continuous hard work and perseverance, he is sure to complete his college career on a high note. After graduating in May, Hadrick’s plans include staying in the sports industry, preferably in track and field communications. He is currently interning with the University of Miami Sports Information Department as an Assistant Track and Field Sports Information Director. He plans on going back home immediately after college, but is looking forward to setting new goals and going out on another adventure soon thereafter. By Cameron Harati, UM intern

Dale Carey - UM Baseball Dale Carey is a sophomore outfielder on the University of Miami’s baseball team from Marietta, Ga. The youngest member of the Carey family, Dale’s road to Miami baseball is one of hard work and dedication. Dale is one of the most athletically gifted athletes on the Hurricanes ball club, with lightning quick speed on the base paths as well as in the outfield. Dale as many know, was given much publicity in large part due to his highlight reel catch last year versus Florida. That catch remained a top play for numerous weeks and further provided proof of his outfield prowess. He takes pride in playing outfield at the University of Miami because, as he says, “Outfield is the last line of defense, nothing can get behind you or everybody will be in a lot of trouble. It’s fun to make those spectacular plays and diving catches. Infielders make diving catches, but in the outfield you run and layout and personally, to me, it looks a lot better.” Growing up in Georgia it was no guarantee that Dale would wind up playing at the University of Miami. Growing up he was a Hurricanes fan, partly because he had family in the Miami area, but mainly because of his uncle Kenneth. “Kenneth has more Miami stuff than I’ve ever seen before, with his garage littered with Miami uniforms and throwbacks,” said Dale. He credits his uncle with greatly influencing him to come to the university and play baseball. The rich history and tradition of the university also helped sway Dale. “The Miami tradition brought me here. I talked to the coaching staff a lot while they were recruiting me over the summer and throughout my draft process. The coaches here told me they would take care of me and this team is a family. I love Miami and I have a lot of family here. Miami baseball is all about passion. You can see [assistant coach] Gino DiMare, Coach Morris, our entire coaching staff are the definition of Miami Baseball. They’re all passionate and they just want to win.” Although much of Dale’s days do revolve around training and baseball, his favorite leisure activities include playing video games with his teammates as well as watching horror movies. He enjoys playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and is a big Xbox fan. Video games even played a role in his recruit-
ment to Miami. “I remember playing the old MVP Baseball game and I played with the Canes a lot. I used to play with them on video games and now I actually get to go here.” Carey is also a big horror movie buff and enjoys both the new age horror films of today as well as many classics. He lists numerous horror films as his favorites. “My favorite movies are probably Paranormal Activity 3, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Amityville Horror. A few old ones are It and Dog Soldiers.” Dale Carey is a student-athlete who believes in playing whatever role his team needs him to play, his goal for this season goes hand-in-hand with the team’s goal - “to help the team out in any way possible and basically do anything that I can to help us win because after this season I want to say that we won Omaha; we made it.
