NCAA Coral Gables Regional Field Announced

The University of Miami Hurricanes will host the 25th NCAA Regional in program history beginning this Friday, and will be joined at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field by second-seeded Texas Tech, third-seeded Columbia and fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman. Miami will open its postseason against fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. on Fri., May 30 in Game Two of the Coral Gables Regional. Game One - between No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 3 Columbia - will take place at 2 p.m. of the same day. Miami found out its postseason fate a day early, when the team was selected as one of 16 Regional hosts Sunday night. The Hurricanes, who finished the season with a 41-17 overall record, earned the second ACC Regular Season Championship in program history with a 24-6 record in league play. The Hurricanes have not missed the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship since 1972 – a stretch of 42 consecutive seasons - and own an all-time record of 117-43 (.731). Miami’s all-time mark in the postseason stands at an impressive 178-91 (.661). “It’s a credit to our administration to give us an opportunity to compete at that level, to our players and our coaches to be able to keep that string going,” head coach Jim Morris said of the program’s postseason streak. “It’s an amazing thing. The Coral Gables Regional has been paired with the Gainesville, Fla., Regional hosted by the University of Florida. The Gainesville Regional includes top-seeded Florida, No. 2 Long Beach State, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 4 College of Charleston. Miami will open its postseason with fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman, who earned a berth by capturing the 2014 MEAC Championship. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 26-31 record and a 14-10 record in conference play. Miami split its two games with the Wildcats this spring, falling 7-3 on March 11 and capturing a 10-1 win on April 2. Second-seeded Texas Tech finished the regular season with a 40-18 overall mark, including a 14-10 record in Big 12 play. The Hurricanes have battled the Red Raiders only once in history, capturing a 13-0 victory on May 23, 1998 in the Coral Gables Regional. Third-seeded Columbia made its first trip to Coral Gables in 2013, when Miami captured back-to-back wins in a midweek pair with the Lions. The Ivy League champions finished 29-18 and won their conference with a 15-5 league record. ACC cohorts Florida State (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.) were also announced among the 16 Regional hosts on Sunday. Overall, seven teams from the ACC were included in the field of 64: Miami, Florida State, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Clemson. Season-ticket holders have the ability to secure their seat locations for this series. To do so, click here to log into your account, and follow the on-screen instructions. Hurricane Club members have priority to purchase All-Session tickets before the general public. A limited amount of Reserved Seating is available to Hurricane Club members beginning at Noon on Tuesday, May 27. Darquea Dominates as a Freshman at UM

By David Villavicencio Daniela Darquea was a freshman sensation for the Hurricanes women’s golf team. In her first year at the University of Miami, Darquea established herself as a superb talent on the course. The gifted golfer won two tournaments in 2014 and posted five Top 10 finishes, including a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional. “I wake up every single day and try to do my best,” Darquea said. “I go to the gym and practice and I give all I have. Things went really well this semester. I was really surprised. I never thought I would do this so quickly.” Darquea’s list of accomplishments is an impressive one, especially after playing just one season of collegiate golf. She became the fifth Hurricane to earn a spot on the All-ACC team, joining Tina Miller (2005), Josie Shinn (2005), Maria Ronderos (2011) and teammate Leticia Ras-Anderica (2013), and was named the ACC Co-Golfer of the Month in March. Darquea was also one of 12 golfers selected to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-Central Region Team. All of the success has been a bit of a surprise to Darquea. A native of Quito, Ecuador, Darquea was an accomplished junior golfer. But she never envisioned having so much success as a freshman in college. “I had a successful junior career,” Darquea said. “I had some good tournaments when I was playing in Ecuador, but I never thought I would come here and start shooting low rounds. Courses are longer here and everything is different. College golf is a different world. It is not the same as junior golf. I was just planning on trying to adapt to it, but things have gone well and I feel comfortable on the course.” The freshman certainly looked comfortable all season, leading the Hurricanes with a 73 average on the season and twice firing a career-best round of 67, first in the opening round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational and then in the final round of her victory at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational. All of the success this past season came as Darquea was adjusting to the longer courses found in the United States. “I am not hitting a pitching wedge to the green,” Darquea said. “I am hitting 7, 6 or 5-irons to the greens. That’s a big difference, but I am really glad that I have been able to make that adjustment successfully. The distance has been the biggest adjustment. In Ecuador, courses are different. They are shorter and around the greens, it’s easier there. Here I have to play a lot more bump and runs and pitch and runs. It’s been different. I was used to using my 60-degree wedge all the time and now I have to take a 9-iron and roll it.” While playing collegiate golf in the United States has been a new experience for Darquea, it was something she always wanted to do and she quickly realized she wanted to be a Hurricane. @CanesRowing Earns 2014 CRCA Awards

Seven members of the University of Miami rowing program were among the 2014 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) honorees. Breanna Hayton was named to the 2014 CRCA South All-Region second team. The senior earned All-Region honors for the second consecutive year, adding another honor to her long list of accomplishments. “Breanna is incredibly deserving of this award,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Her tireless effort and positive attitude are a constant force on the team and in the classroom.” Nominated student-athletes for the All-Region teams are evaluated on the strength of their team’s regional finish, coaches’ recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams’ varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season. A 2014 All-ACC second-team selection, Hayton was a key part of most of Miami’s best boats during the 2013-14 season. The senior helped Miami win the Championship 8+ and the Women’s Open 8+, as well as finish second in the Championship 4+, at the 2013 Head of the Hooch. The Victoria, B.C., native also helped the Hurricanes 1V8+ beat UConn and earn two victories at the UCF Invitational. Hayton was also one of seven Canes named a 2014 CRCA Scholar Athlete, joining Sarah Aschebrock, Lindsay Bouchacourt, Frida Carlsson, Caitlin Lowe, Hannah Meister and Jaimie Snelgrove. “Our scholar athletes deserve a big congratulations,” Sanderson said. “We are all very proud of their outstanding academic achievements.” All student-athletes who were named a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and participated in at least 75% of races at the varsity level (1V, 2V, 4V).

Wimbley Earns Second POTW Award Hurricanes Unveil 2014ACC Football Uniforms

Following an impressive performance in the final meet before the NCAA East Preliminary, Miami’s Shakima Wimbley was named the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Female Performer of the Week. Wimbley was the top finisher in a field of 45 athletes competing in the women’s 400m at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Her personal-best time of 51.68 seconds is the fastest time by an ACC athlete this season and ranks eighth in the country. “Shakima has had a tremendous freshman year and Saturday was a great performance,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “Her motivation to be great and her will to succeed have driven her to help fulfill her potential and reach her goals.” The freshman was named the ACC Indoor Track and Field Female Performer of the Week on Jan. 21, following an impressive collegiate debut at the Nittany Lion Challenge in which she won the women’s 400m and anchored Miami’s 4x400m relay to victory. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native has had an incredibly successful freshman campaign. Wimbley was named the 2014 ACC Women’s Indoor Freshman of the Year after a stellar indoor season that saw her win the 200m indoor ACC title and anchor Miami’s indoor 4x400m relay to an ACC championship. Wimbley also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she was a second-team All-American in the 200m. Wimbley’s success continued in outdoor track and field, where she secured the ACC title in the 200m and anchored Miami’s 4x100m relay to a gold medal at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Wimbley placed third in the 400m at the Florida Relays running an impressive 52.58 that ranked fourth in school history. But her blazing speed at Georgia Tech helped her climb the Miami record book, moving into second place on the women’s all-time 400m list with a personal-best time of 51.68 seconds. Wimbley is in position to compete in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relays at the NCAA East Preliminary on May 29-31. Her 400m time ranks second in the East Region and eighth nationally, while her 200m time of 23.12 seconds ranks eighth in the East Region and 21st nationally. Wimbley is also part of Miami’s 4x400m relay team that posted a time of 3:35.90 that ranked 24th in the East Region and 49th nationally. This is Wimbley’s second ACC Performer of the Week Award of the 2014 season and she is the third Cane to win a Performer of the Week Award, joining sophomore Alysha Newman. 20

@CanesRowing Adds Six to 2014 Incoming Class Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson announced the addition of six newcomers to the 2014 class. Marguerite Bandeian, Alyssa Basdavanos, Samantha Chenkin, Emme Rempel, Taylor Richard and Nicole Rotkovitz are the newest members of a class of 13 newcomers. They join Paige Hoffman, Taegan Lynch, Jane Moore, Alex Ware, Caitlin White-Parsons, Elise Wiley and Mieke Wilms in the incoming class of Hurricanes rowers. “I am very excited to announce six more student-athletes to our fall 2014 group,” Sanderson said. “They each bring great strength and character to our team and I am thrilled that we will have the opportunity to work with them.” Marguerite Bandeian (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson HS [Wake Forest]) Bandeian comes to Miami from Wake Forest and will be a sophomore in the 2014-15 season. She placed third in the women’s Varsity 8+ at the 2013 Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association regatta and third at the 2013 Maryland State Championships in the Women’s Varsity 8+. Bandeian was also selected honorable mention in the Washington Post’s AllMetSports in Spring 2013. “I chose University of Miami for rowing because when I spoke with the coach I could tell they wanted to build a fast team. Being in a competitive atmosphere is something I absolutely love and thrive in, because when I see one girl pushing herself to the point of maximum exertion, it drives me to push harder for her and for myself. I want to be a part of a team that works together but also pushes off one another to become better each day, and I believe I will find that here.” Alyssa Basdavanos (Honolulu, Hawai’i/Punahou School) Basdavanos was a standout at Punahou School, earning Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) Paddling All-Star of the Year for the 2013-14 season. Basdavanos helped Punahou School win a state championship, while also winning state championships as a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club in the 15 and 16 divisions. “Coming from Hawai’i as a paddler, I’ve developed a love for being in the water in any way possible,” Basdavanos said. “I’ve watched many paddlers evolve into successful rowers, especially in recent years. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to continue my paddling career as a rower at ‘The U.’ I am very competitive and look forward to joining a team who shares the same desire to work hard each day. I’m very excited to be a neuroscience major at ‘The U’ this fall. I felt that Miami fit my academic and athletic goals best. There are endless opportunities to take advantage of at ‘The U’ and I hope to maximize my full potential in my time at Miami.” Samantha Chenkin (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS [Guilford College]) Chenkin is a relatively new rower who has extensive experience in another endurance sport: cross country running. She was a member of the cross country team at both Spanish River High School and at Guilford College. Chenkin, who will be a sophomore in the 2014-15 season, will look to use her endurance as she transitions from the land to the water. “I chose to go to the University of Miami for rowing because of the highly-qualified coaches who have the desire to push athletes to reach their potential,” Chenkin said. “I am most excited about embracing all the opportunities that Miami is going to offer me as a student, from being a part of a Division I athletic program to being in the exercise physiology major in order to pursue my passion for sports medicine and the human body. I know that I am going to be able to expand my knowledge and grow academically, athletically, and as an overall person which will only benefit me in my future endeavors. I am also looking forward being part of the Miami Hurricane family.” Amme Rempel (Monmouth Beach, N.J./Shore Regional HS) Rempel has experience rowing at both the high school and club level with the Navesink River Rowing Club. She earned third place at the 2014 Two River Erg Challenge Women’s HS Novice 2k and finished 17th in the Women’s High School Quads at the 2013 Head of the Schuylkill. “The UM rowing community is filled with a great group of dedicated women, along with an amazing coaching staff,” Rempel said. “UM will be a great team for me to spend the next four years with and excel in my rowing career. Miami has the team, academics and location that I have been looking for in a university. The University of Miami continues to push forward and upward; I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Hurricane family.” Taylor Richard (Belmont, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols School) Richard comes to Miami after a successful career rowing with the Buckingham Browne & Nichols Girls Varsity Crew. Her top results include and eighth-place finish in the Varsity 4+ at the 2013 NIERAs and a 28th-place finish in the Youth 4+ at the 2013 Head of the Charles Regatta. “I choose to row at ‘The U’ because of the motivated coaching staff, the commitment to excellence in athletics and academics, as well as the bright future of the program. I’m most excited about being able to explore Miami’s diverse culture and see what it has to offer as well as being a student-athlete at such a well-recognized school.” Nicole Rotkovitz (Moorestown, N.J./Cherry Hill East HS) Rotkovitz has had a lot of success as a member of the South Jersey Rowing Club, competing as a coxswain in the men’s division. Her boat finished in the men’s lightweight 4+ at the 2013 Mid-Atlantics, placed seventh in the men’s lightweight 4+ at the 2013 Youth Nationals and won the men’s heavyweight 4+ at the 2014 Braxton Memorial Regatta. “I chose UM rowing because overall atmosphere and exciting potential of the team,” Rotkovitz said. “I’m most excited about the unique college experience being part of a division 1 team, the academics and, of course, the beautiful weather.” The 13 newcomers are set to join the Hurricanes for the 2014-15 season. 24

Aly Named Most Improved Senior of the Year

University of Miami senior Omar Aly has been named the Southeast Region Most Improved Senior of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today. “Omar had to work really hard to get to where his game is today,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “He had to get stronger physically, and improve many parts of his game. He worked his way up to the top of the singles and doubles lineup, always being a class act, on and off the court. It was rewarding as a coach to see him improve over the years, and I’m happy to see him recognized as the most improved senior of our region.” Aly, who was named an alternate for the 2014 NCAA D-I Men’s Tennis Singles Championships, was ranked as high as No. 66 by the ITA this season. He posted an overall 14-7 singles mark and was 5-4 in ACC play. He defeated a pair of Top 25 players this season and posted winning streaks of seven and four matches. In four seasons at Miami, he notched a 33-32 singles record, earning 14 just this season. In doubles, he posted 30 victories in his four years at The U. Aly, who hails from Edmond, Okla., received his BA degree in economics with a minor in psychology last weekend and he plans to look for wealth management jobs in the Miami area.

McDermott Named to 2014 Rimington Watch List

Miami Hurricanes senior center Shane McDermott was named to the 2014 Rimington Trophy spring watch list, released Monday by the trophy’s selection committee. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate center in NCAA Division I FBS. A 2013 All-ACC third-team selection, McDermott started 11 games at center, missing two games due to injury. He helped anchor Miami’s offensive line that paved the way for the Hurricanes offense that averaged 425.8 yards of total offense and 33.8 points per game. As a sophomore in 2012, McDermott started all 12 games at center, en route to All-ACC honorable mention. Miami’s Brett Romberg won the Rimington Trophy in 2002 after contributing the Miami’s 34-game winning streak from 2000-2002. He never allowed a sack at center and led an offensive line that helped produce three 1,000-yard rushers – James Jackson, Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised more than $2.5 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $100 million for CF Research. Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982. He became the Outland Trophy’s only double winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.

Canes Earn 19 Spots in NCAA Regional Eight Hurricanes are repeat qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary. Twenty members of the University of Miami track and field program were among the qualifiers announced Thursday by the NCAA for the 2014 East Preliminary. Eight men and 12 women make up the group of 20 Hurricanes scheduled to compete in 15 events at the NCAA East Preliminary from May 29-31 in Jacksonville. A year ago, Miami had 13 studentathletes qualify for regionals, competing in 12 different events. “I am excited about the group of young people we have qualified for the NCAA Championships,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “I think it shows that our program is going in the right direction with the amount of freshmen and sophomores qualified joining a group of experienced athletes to lead us next week.” The Preliminary championships competitions will be held May 29-31. The East region will be held at North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, and the West region at Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The qualifiers out of these regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon. “I think our athletes are in a position to not only perform well next week, but put themselves in a position to advance to the finals in Eugene,” Deem said. Miami’s women’s team has several experienced student-athletes heading to Jacksonville. Junior Amber Monroe qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary for the third consecutive year, while Taneisha Cordell, Lea Johnson, Alyssa McClure and Alaine Tate qualified for the second straight year. 33

Sophomore Alysha Newman also qualified for her second straight regional, though it is her first as a Hurricane. The men’s team also had repeat qualifiers as John-Patrick Friday and Isaiah Simmons each earned a spot in the East Preliminary for the second consecutive year. Miami had eight men qualify for regionals, shattering a previous program-best six men’s qualifiers set in 2010. “On the women’s side, we are taking a wellrounded group with representatives from all event areas,” Deem said. “And I’ve talked all year about the importance of growing our men’s program and the amount of qualifiers on the men’s side is indicative that we are on the right track.” Freshman Shakima Wimbley is one of Miami’s highest-ranked qualifiers as her 400m time of 51.68 seconds ranks second in the East Region and eighth nationally. Wimbley also qualified in the women’s 200m with a time of 23.12 seconds that ranks eighth in the East Region and 21st nationally, but she will not compete in the event as she focuses on the 400m and the 4x400m relay. Thursday’s announcement adds to Wimbley’s impressive week as she was named the ACC Female Performer of the Week on Tuesday. Newman is also a highly-ranked qualifier in the women’s pole vault. The sophomore’s personalbest mark of 4.41m is second in the East Region and fourth nationally as she heads into her second straight NCAA East Preliminary. meet before the NCAA East Preliminary, Miami’s Shakima Wimbley was named the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Female Performer of the Week. Wimbley was the top finisher in a field of 45 athletes competing in the women’s 400m at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Her personal-best time of 51.68 seconds is the fastest time by an ACC athlete this season and ranks eighth in the country. The freshman was also named the ACC Indoor Track and Field Female Performer of the Week on Jan.

They’re a great, explosive team, and were proud of everything they accomplished this year.” During their run at the NCAA Championships, Albuquerque and Riobueno picked up three wins against Top-25 opponents and two against Top-10 teams -- No. 1 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford. ACC RECAP The University of Miami rowing program earned a sixth-place finish at the first two-day ACC Rowing Championship in conference history. Despite not competing in the 3V8+ division, the Hurricanes scored 28 points on Saturday to finish ahead of Boston College and North Carolina. With 80 points, Virginia secured its 14th ACC Championship.

Sanderson Presents ‘14 Awards Five Canes recognized for performance during 2013-14 rowing season The University of Miami rowing program wrapped up its first season under head coach Dave Sanderson with the postseason awards presentation. Sanderson and assistant coaches Taurii Coyne and Meredith Razzolini recognized five studentathletes for their contributions during the 201314 season. The coaching staff also presented seniors Maggie Fragel, Katie Guest, Breanna Hayton and Courtney Keller with a miniature “U” oar as a token of appreciation for their four years representing the Hurricanes on the water. Freshman Frida Carlsson was the recipient of the D.E.A.P. award, honoring the person who best exhibits Determination, Effort, Attitude and Performance. Carlsson was a member of several successful Miami boats this season. The Vanersborg, Sweden, native helped Miami win the Championship 8+ race at the 2013 Head of the Hooch. She also contributed to the 2V8+ victory over UConn and to a pair of 1V8+ victories at the UCF Invitational. Sophomore Hannah Nielsen was named the 2013-14 GRIT award winner in recognition of her ability to step up to the challenge and rise to the occasion. The Victoria, B.C., native helped Miami win the Women’s Open 8+ race at the 2013 Head of the Hooch. She also contributed to the 1V8+ victory over UConn and to a pair of 1V8+ victories at the UCF Invitational.

Hayton was the recipient of the Iron Oar. Inspired by Miami’s Iron Arrow honor society, the Iron Oar is presented to someone who embodies the following mantra: “She who would know the oar, must as an irrefutable rule, have openly and without thought of reward, show obvious love for team and boat speed.” A 2014 All-ACC second-team selection, Hayton was a key part of most of Miami’s best boats during the 2013-14 season. Keller earned The Hammer award for the fastest 2k on the team for the 2013-14 season. The senior helped the Hurricanes win the Women’s Open 8+ race at the 2013 Head of the Hooch. Keller was also in the 2V8+ that went undefeated at the UCF Invitational and beat UConn in Miami’s lone home race of the season. Sophomore Gigi Williamson earned The Hammer-Greenhorn award for the fastest 2k by a first year/newcomer to the program. Williamson was on Miami’s travel squad all season and represented the Hurricanes at the Clemson Invitational, rowing with the 2V8+.

“All our boats were able to race their best race of the season today, which was a team-wide goal,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “I’m proud of them for their effort today and throughout the season. It was no doubt a learning experience for the athletes, which will motivate them in the offseason. I also want to thanks Clemson and the ACC for hosting an incredible regatta.” Miami’s top two boats each competed in their respective Grand Final Saturday, with the 1V8+ scoring 12 points with a time of 6:50.6. That was an improvement of over 12 seconds from the 1V8+’s Friday result of 7:02.8. The 2V8+ placed fifth in its Grand Final with a time of 7:01.6, adding 12 more points to the team score. A day earlier, the 2V8+ earned a spot in the Grand Final with a time of 7:02.8. The Hurricanes won the V4+ Petite Final, posting a time of 7:59.7 to beat North Carolina in a head-to-head race. Miami’s V4+ finished seventh overall in its division, scoring four points. The V4+ improved by over 20 seconds from its Friday time of 8:20.7. A crowd of approximately 1,000 fans on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. watched the eight ACC rowing teams compete in good conditions, with a cross head wind averaging just one mile per hour and temperatures in the high 50s. Following the conclusion of the ACC Rowing Championship, senior Breanna Hayton was one of eight rowers named to the All-ACC second team. “Congratulationss to senior and varsity stroke Breanna Hayton for being named to the All-ACC squad,” Sanderson said.

Zach Kancher Named Assistant WBB Coach

Head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier has announced the hiring of Zach Kancher as the newest assistant coach for the University of Miami women’s basketball team. Highly regarded within college basketball circles, Kancher comes to Coral Gables with over a decade of experience ranging from the high school level to the highest level of Division I women’s basketball. “Zach is an absolutely tremendous hire for us,” Meier said. “I felt very challenged trying to find a coach to replace Carolyn Kieger. It was a very big hire for our program. The challenge was to find high basketball IQ with a tenacious personality and a great court demeanor—and I think we found all of that in Zach. I also think he’s going to help us recruit the northeast, which he’s done for many years. His track record as a head coach and his proven success going to the Final Four with Maryland, he really adds a lot to our program and it’s something that we are very excited about. I have so much respect for Coach Frese and the Maryland staff and that’s a big reason why Zach was at the top of our list.” Kancher has spent the previous three seasons (2011-14) as the Director of Scouting and Player Development for the University of Maryland, where he helped the Terrapins reach the NCAA Sweet 16 or beyond each year. “I’m extremely grateful to Coach Meier for granting me this opportunity to become a Hurricane,” Kancher said. “She runs a first-rate program that has won an ACC Championship in the last five years. The ACC is a fantastic league for women’s basketball and Miami has proven to be a perennial championship contender. I can’t express how fortunate I’ve been to have learned from Coach Frese at Maryland and the experience I’ve had in the past three years—reaching a Final Four and winning an ACC Championship. I will hopefully be able to replicate that success at Miami, and I couldn’t be any more excited.” In his role under head coach Brenda Frese, Kancher was responsible for scouting report generation of opponents including full breakdowns and analysis, analytics, and personnel tendencies. “Miami made a terrific hire in Zach,” Maryland head coach Brenda Frese said. “He will have an instant impact on their program like he did ours. He’s a dynamic guy who is really passionate about the game and life in general. We are really proud of what he did here at Maryland and look forward to seeing him grow in his role at Miami.” Prior to his time in College Mark, Md., Kancher coached three seasons as the top assistant at Division II Goldey-Beacom College, and in his final two years also took on the role of recruiting coordinator while guiding the Lightning to a CACC Championship and NCAA tournament appearance. His first stop in the collegiate ranks came at the Division III College of Mount Saint Vincent, where he was the head coach and assistant athletic director for operations and facilities. In his lone season at Mount Saint Vincent, Kancher led his team to the ECAC-Metro Quaterfinals, to the Skyline Conference Semifinals, and to the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference Championship. In his first coaching stop, Kancher spent four seasons at The Shipley School, spending two as the assistant boys coach and two as the head varsity coach. In 2006-07, The Shipley School went 22-6 under Kancher with appearances in the Pennsylvania Independent School Finals and the Friends School League Finals. Kancher spent his undergraduate years as a practice player for the women’s basketball team at The George Washington University from 19992003, while earning his bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in creative writing. Currently, Kancher is working towards his master’s degree in sport administration from Canisius College.
