Football, Jha Team Up for Cane Brain Project

The University of Miami Hurricanes football program will partner with UM neuroscientist Dr. Amishi Jha for an innovative research study to investigate how mindfulness training can help football players better cope with the high stakes and high demands of collegiate athletics. “The question we ask is if mindfulness training – which has been found to benefit high-stress groups like soldiers, Marines, CEOs and college students – can help student athletes in their academic and athletic performance,” said Dr. Jha, associate professor in the UM College of Arts & Sciences Department of Psychology and director of contemplative neuroscience for the UMindfulness Initiative. Jha, the lead researcher on the study, is collaborating with Scott Rogers, director of programs and training for the UMindfulness Initiative and of UM Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Their previous research found that mindfulness training helps curb mind wandering and improve attention as high-stress undergraduates near exam season. Jha will begin the project this summer with Rogers delivering an innovative mindfulness program to UM’s football student-athletes. Mindfulness involves focusing attention on present-moment experience and observing one’s thoughts and feelings without judgement. “Through mindfulness training,” suggests Rogers, “student-athletes may be able to develop a set of mental tools and resources that will serve them well on the field and in the classroom.” The Jha-Hurricanes football collaboration is the first phase of a larger “Cane Brain Project”. The project aims to determine if mindfulness training might help protect collegiate football players’ brains, an area of interest that is drawing national attention. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reports that the hippocampus, a part of the brain necessary for memory, is smaller in college football players – especially those who have had concussions. Other research has shown that mindfulness training may increase brain gray matter density in this area. “While better helmet design may help protect their brains from the outside in, very little known about what types of cognitive training exercises might help protect athletes’ brains from the inside out,” said Jha. “We are eager to see if mindfulness training might help.” Josh Rooks, a graduate student in the Department of Psychology and a member of Jha’s research team, said, “Our very first step is to see if cognitive performance and academic performance benefits from mindfulness training in collegiate football players.” Rooks, a former college football player who practiced mindfulness during his time as a tight end for the Northwestern University Wildcats, joined Jha’s lab in 2012. “I recently returned from the ACC Conference meetings and a symposium given by the NCAA’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brian Hainline, MD. Dr. Hainline shared with us two of the greatest challenges facing college athletes; (1) overuse (as a result of pre-puberty specialization and year-round participation) and (2) mental health and welfare,” said Al Golden, UM head football coach. “The latter is why we are thrilled to be partnering with Dr. Jha to study mindfulness training.” He continues, “Mental health is a vital, yet often overlooked component, of academic and athletic achievement. Our football program is excited about mindfulness training and enhancing student-athlete focus, stress management, working memory, and improving the overall competitive environment here at The U.” Recently, Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), a mindfulness practitioner who will be speaking at UM this summer through the UMindfulness lecture series, invited former NFL players and military veterans to the Capitol to discuss the benefits of mindfulness in their recovery from brain trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, the 2014 Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks revealed that many team members practiced mindfulness meditation throughout their winning season. 11

Hurricane Club Exceeds Annual Giving Goal

The Hurricane Club has reached its goal in annual giving with more than $9.8 million raised for the Student-Athlete Excellence Fund. This is $1 million more than was raised in 2013. “It is an exciting time for Hurricane Athletics and I would like to thank each and every Hurricane Club Member for their generous support in Building Champions at the University of Miami,” Director of Athletics Blake James said. “We are continuing our strategic plan of providing our student-athletes with the best education and resources in collegiate athletics and the generosity of our Hurricane Club members greatly assist in these efforts.” The Student-Athlete Excellence Fund provides the funding for scholarships, facility improvements and operational support needed to achieve excellence in 18 varsity sports, and provides opportunities for 400+ student-athletes. The $9.8 million goal was made possible by gifts from over 6,500 Hurricane Club members, many of whom increased their giving for 2014 through the Canes Plus Program “Collectively our 6,500+ Hurricane Club Members representing over 48 states and 4 countries have stepped up for University of Miami student-athletes and met this goal head on,” Associate AD for Development Jesse Marks said. “We still have work to do and we aim to increase our membership base to 7,500 members by the end of 2014. Thank you to all of our current Hurricane Club members for your continued and generous support of our Miami Hurricanes!” Reaching the $9.8 million fundraising mark is the second goal of the year achieved by the Hurricane Club. Earlier this year, the Hurricane Club surpassed their goal of reaching 1,000 new members. The third goal remaining is building the Hurricane Club to 7,500 members by December 31. To help UM Athletics get to 7,500 Hurricane Club members please visit www.umbuildingchampions.com. An annual membership begins at the Sebastian Level for just $50. Atlantic Coast Conference Launches New Brand

The Atlantic Coast Conference launched its new brand on Thursday in preparation for its 62nd year of athletic competition. The new mark reflects the ACC’s future while maintaining a strong sense of the league’s proud heritage and tradition. “The ACC is well-positioned for many future successes and we are pleased with our new branding that reflects our limitless potential,” Commissioner John Swofford said. “The new, contemporary look modernizes and energizes the ACC mark, and, at the same time, still reflects the league’s history and rich tradition.” The new mark will be used in association with each of the ACC’s 27 sponsored sports. It was designed in partnership with SME, which has worked closely with the conference on multiple projects and successfully led major rebranding of numerous sports organizations. The ACC and SME gathered input from member institutions, alumni and fans in creating the new design. Similar to primary logos of previous years, “ACC” lettering serves as the new mark’s centerpiece. Set in a custom-designed font created specifically for the league, the logo leans forward toward the conference’s ever-present goal of excellence. The lettering is accentuated by a bold, silver underline that symbolizes the ACC’s journey toward a bright future. The new mark’s versatility will allow it to be displayed in the school colors of each of the ACC’s 15 member institutions. Fans will see the logo on display via many applications – team uniforms, merchandise, facilities and digital platforms such as websites, social media and television. “With the recent expansion of our league and the addition of Louisville on July 1, it seemed a natural time to update our brand,” Swofford said. “We feel that it well represents the high standard and values the ACC has held for more than 61 years.” About the ACC The Atlantic Coast Conference, entering its 62nd year of competition and 15 members strong, has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. ACC members continue to build upon the cornerstones on which the league was founded in 1953 with a consistent balance of academics, athletics and integrity. For more information, visit theACC.com and follow @theACC on Twitter and on facebook.com/theACC.

Diaz Named Louisville Slugger All-American

Junior lefthander Chris Diaz hauled in his career-first All-America honors Thursday afternoon, earning a spot on the Louisville Slugger First Team as announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Diaz, who was named 2014 ACC Co-Pitcher of the Year prior to last week’s ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C., finished the spring with a flawless 9-0 record and a 2.31 ERA. The Hurricanes won every 2014 regular-season game started by Diaz, who became Miami’s first first-team selection since Yasmani Grandal in 2010. With 93.2 innings pitched over his 15 starts, Diaz is just the 10th Hurricane to ever earn a spot on the Louisville Slugger First Team. Redshirt junior lefthander Bryan Radziewski was named to the second team in 2013. The Florida City, Fla., native struck out 80 batters compared to just 38 walks, and held opposing hitters to a .239 average over the course of the season. Diaz, who owns a career record of 18-6 with a dazzling 2.25 ERA , allowed two earned runs or less in 12 of his 15 starts this spring. Dating back to 2013 – his first season as a starter in the weekend rotation – the southpaw has yielded two earned runs or less in 24 of 31 starts.

To Fans and Friends of the University of Miami Athletics, Now that our University of Miami teams have concluded their seasons, it is important to remember that NCAA rules still affect our student-athletes, coaches, institutional staff members and fans throughout the year, not just during the playing season. That being said, we wanted to review a few guidelines that our fans should keep in mind. Use of student-athletes name, image or likeness: NCAA Bylaws also prohibit boosters, local business and corporate entities from using a student-athlete’s name, picture or likeness to promote any commercial product. A student-athlete’s name or picture may also not appear on commercial items Employing student-athletes: Student-athletes must only be paid the going-rate in the locale for their employment. This means, for example, that if the going rate for employment in a certain field is $20 an hour, it would be impermissible to pay a student-athlete $50 an hour for the same job. Additionally, student-athletes may only be paid for work actually performed. There have been many NCAA violations concerning student-athletes receiving money without actually performing the work they are being paid to do. This means that studentathletes should also not be paid in advance of performing work, to ensure the work is actually completed before receiving payment. Student-athletes who receive payment without performing work jeopardize their eligibility and UM would need to seek reinstatement among other potential penalties. Extra Benefits: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete or their friend or family member a benefit not authorized by the NCAA. The receipt of a benefit is not in violation of NCAA legislation if it can be demonstrated that the same benefit is available to the general student population or a particular segment of the student body. Recruiting: Fans are not permitted to use social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to contact or otherwise attempt to correspond with prospects. This includes, but is not limited to, posting on a wall, using the inbox/e-mail feature, instant messaging, "@replies", "mentions", or direct messaging. As electronic communication technology continues to advance, the opportunity for the supporters of an athletics program to have impermissible contact with a prospect or that prospect's family is greatly increased, however, the institution’s responsibility for that contact remains the same. Please contact the University of Miami Compliance Department with any questions regarding NCAA or ACC rules or regulations at athleticscompliance@miami.edu or 305-284-2692. ASK BEFORE YOU ACT! Sincerely,

Craig Anderson Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Athletics Compliance Office | University of Miami Athletics Schwartz Athletic Center | 5821 San Amaro Drive | Coral Gables, FL 33146 Direct: (305) 284-2692 | Fax: ( 58

Freshman One of Eight ACC All-Americans

Miami Hurricanes freshman golfer Daniela Darquea can add another honor to her long list of accomplishments in 2013-14 – AllAmerican. The Quito, Ecuador, native earned All-American honorable mention Thursday from the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Darquea is the first Hurricanes golfer to be named a WGCA All-American and the first Miami golfer to receive All-America recognition since Julie Brand in 1994. The 2013-14 WGCA All-America teams included 40 student-athletes – 13 first-team, 11 second-team and 16 honorable mention selections. Darquea was one of eight ACC golfers named to one of the three All-America teams. The All-ACC performer started all 10 tournaments as a freshman, leading the Hurricanes to a berth in the 2014 NCAA Central Regional in Oklahoma. She led the Canes with a 73.00 scoring average, which ranks as second on Miami’s single-season list. After one season in Coral Gables, she owns four of the 10 lowest 36-hole scores in school history as well as the second-lowest 54-hole tally. Darquea recorded four rounds of 68 or better (67, 67, 68, 68) – the most in a single season in school history. In their fourth season under Patti Rizzo, the Hurricanes advanced to their second straight NCAA Regional and 33rd postseason appearance overall. Miami set a program record with 19 sub-300 rounds, finishing in the top five of seven of its 10 tournaments in 2013-14.

The Miami Hurricanes Athletic Marketing staff won two 2014 NACMA “Best Of” Awards this week at the annual NACDA Convention. In the Revenue-Generating Idea category, Miami’s Ticket Sales Class, taught by Associate AD Andrew Goodrich and Assistant AD Brian Bowsher, won gold. In the Sponsorship Activation category, the Tiger Direct #TVsForTDs promotion won silver. “We are honored to earn these awards, none of which would have been possible without the fantastic culture of teamwork and excellence that permeates the entire external unit at UM,” said Andrew Goodrich, Associate AD for Marketing and Sales. “Additional thanks goes to Jeff Ziegenhorn of HSP and Kari Baker with Phizzle for their roles in creating the Tiger Direct Sponsorship Activation,” Goodrich said. “We’d also like to thank the faculty in UM’s Sports Administration program for their role in creating an opportunity for our students to learn the fundamentals of ticket sales in a real world environment.” This is the second consecutive year that Miami’s marketing team has earned multiple distinctions for their achievements by NACMA. @CanesRowing Earns 2014 CRCA Awards

Seven members of the University of Miami rowing program were among the 2014 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) honorees. Breanna Hayton was named to the 2014 CRCA South All-Region second team. The senior earned All-Region honors for the second consecutive year, adding another honor to her long list of accomplishments. “Breanna is incredibly deserving of this award,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Her tireless effort and positive attitude are a constant force on the team and in the classroom.” Nominated student-athletes for the All-Region teams are evaluated on the strength of their team’s regional finish, coaches’ recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams’ varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season. A 2014 All-ACC second-team selection, Hayton was a key part of most of Miami’s best boats during the 2013-14 season. The senior helped Miami win the Championship 8+ and the Women’s Open 8+, as well as finish second in the Championship 4+, at the 2013 Head of the Hooch. The Victoria, B.C., native also helped the Hurricanes 1V8+ beat UConn and earn two victories at the UCF Invitational. Hayton was also one of seven Canes named a 2014 CRCA Scholar Athlete, joining Sarah Aschebrock, Lindsay Bouchacourt, Frida Carlsson, Caitlin Lowe, Hannah Meister and Jaimie Snelgrove. “Our scholar athletes deserve a big congratulations,” Sanderson said. “We are all very proud of their outstanding academic achievements.” All student-athletes who were named a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and participated in at least 75% of races at the varsity level (1V, 2V, 4V).

We’re headed in the right direction and of the 10 girls that came, nine will be back. We’ve got some great people coming in next year, too. Baseball Eliminated from Postseason with Loss

Miami’s season came to an end Monday night, as second-seeded Texas Tech captured a 4-0 victory over the Hurricanes in the Coral Gables Regional Championship Game at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. Facing elimination earlier in the day, Miami forced a seventh game by capturing a thrilling 2-1 extra-innings win in a contest that was suspended Sunday night due to inclement weather. But the Hurricanes could not continue their season any further, falling after the Red Raiders plated two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Miami ended the regular season with a 44-19 record, while Texas Tech advances to Super Regionals with a 43-18 mark. Freshman Derik Beauprez, called upon to make just the fourth start of his career in an NCAA postseason elimination game, delivered four efficient innings on the mound. The Cherry Hills Creek, Colo., native allowed just one hit with two walks, and struck out two batters on the afternoon. Texas Tech lefthander Cameron Smith kept Miami off-balance for most of the afternoon, allowing just one hit through his first six innings. He would eventually go on to pitch his career-first complete game, allowing just three hits and five walks on the day. He threw 114 pitches. Texas Tech opened the scoring in the seventh inning, plating a run on an error charged to Miami’s Garrett Kennedy . The catcher picked up a sacrifice bunt attempt but threw the ball over the head of David Thompson at first, plating the runner from second for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore reliever Thomas Woodrey entered and allowed a sacrifice fly from Alec Humphreys, but struck out Bryant Burleson to keep the deficit at just 2-0. The Red Raiders plated two runs in the eighth on an RBI single from Zach Davis. Four Hurricanes earned Coral Gables All-Regional designation: catcher Garrett Kennedy, outfielder Tyler Palmer, designated hitter Zack Collins and pitcher Bryan Radziewski.

The past year was a successful one for the UM Sports Hall of Fame and the future looks even brighter as the Hall continues its mission to celebrate the finest students-athletes, coaches and administrators who represented the Orange, Green and White. In June of last year, the 3rd Annual UMSHoF Celebrity Dolphin Tournament was held in Islamorada, hosted by legendary Cane Ray Lewis, attracted more than 90 boats, making it the largest fishing tournament in the Florida Keys. With more than 500 attending the awards dinner, including nearly 100 former Hurricanes athletes, it was truly the fishing “Event of the Year” ! A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys and the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. The Fall semester began with the traditional “Welcome Back” reception held for athletic department staff. The 21st Annual UMSHoF Golf Tournament, played at Melreese Country Club, attracted more than 100 golfers, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. In February, the 3rd Annual UMSHoF Celebrity Bowling Tournament was held at Splitsville in South Miami and was once again a huge success, with 18 Hall of Fame members taking to the lanes. A portion of the proceeds benefitted the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. The Hall’s membership grew to 282 former Hurricanes with its marquee event, the 46th Annual UMSHoF Induction Banquet, held in April at Jungle Island. With more than 500 attendees, including nearly 50 UMSHoF members, along with Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and president Pat Riley, it was a night to remember for the inductees and guests...truly the highlight of the year. The Hall also held “Hall of Fame” games in football and basketball, inviting back all UMSHoF members of those sports who were honored with a halftime ceremony to the delight of the fans in attendance. The UM Sports Hall of Fame is housed in the Tom Kearns Sports Hall of Fame Building located next to the Hecht Athletic Center on the Coral Gables campus. With its four major events, the Hall raises needed funds to continue its operations and outreach to the South Florida community and its goal of showcasing the artifacts and memorabilia from over 85 years of Hurricanes athletics for fans to enjoy for generations to come. As a non-profit organization, all donations are tax deductible. The Hall is open 12-5 weekdays, or call 305-284-2774 for group tours.
