Women’s Tennis Places Five on All-ACC Academic Team

Five University of Miami women’s tennis players, Anna Bartenstein, Gabriela Mejia, Melissa Bolivar, Lina Lileikite and Liat Zimmerman were selected to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team, as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Bartenstein and Mejia were each selected for the third time while the other three have been selected for the first time in their collegiate careers. To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a studentathlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career. All five Canes that were honored boast exceptional averages as Bolivar led the pack with a 3.74 cumulative GPA. Others included Bartenstein (3.45 GPA), Lileikite (3.16 GPA), Meija(3.28 GPA) and Zimmerman (3.54 GPA).

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration, the University of Miami will honor the 1987 National Champion football team at halftime of the Canes’ homecoming game against rival Florida State on Oct. 20 at Sun Life Stadium.

In his first year at The U, Coach Jim Larranaga led the Canes to a 78-62 victory over in-state rival Florida State at the BankUnited Center.

Junior guard Stefanie Yderstrom was named Third Team All-ACC after leading the conference in three-pointers in 2011-12. She was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team twice. Standing only at 5-6, Riquna Williams was one of the most athletic and explosive guards in the country. She is only one of four women to score over 2,000 points in her UM career.

Competing in the 50-yard freestyle event at the NCAA Championships, Kelsi Hall became Miami’s first All-American swimmer in a decade. Sofia Johansson set a new ACC mark in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 59.81, becoming the first to swim the event in under one minute in conference history. Thea Vock finished ninth in the three-meter dive at the NCAA Championships, adding her name to the list of All-Americans under coach Randy Abelman. Senior Dana Hatic (pictured), along with freshman diver Kara McCormack were both named to their first All-ACC Academic teams.
