From the Director of Athletics Hurricane Fans, It’s hard to believe that another year of Hurricane Athletics has come to a close, as it seems like just yesterday we were getting ready for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. As we reflect on this past year in this month’s magazine, I would like to recognize our studentathletes, coaches and staff for all of the hard work, dedication and passion they put into their daily activities here at The U. Through their efforts, the University of Miami Athletics Department consistently ranks among the best at the Division I level. This past year, Miami finished 40th out of 347 Division I institutions in the Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. This is our best finish since the 2002-03 athletics season and it also marks the seventh time Miami has finished in the top 40 since the Director’s Cup began in 1994. Leading off, I would like to congratulate the Hurricanes baseball team on earning a second straight spot in this year’s College World Series. Qualifying for the College World Series 25 times in school history is an incredible accomplishment. This incredible run of consistency is a testament to every coach and student-athlete who has worn the Miami uniform. Head Coach Jim Morris and his staff have established a standard of excellence for all programs. With our Hurricanes’ baseball team advancing to the College World Series, the University of Miami made school history. Miami became the only school in NCAA Division I athletics to have its football team play in a bowl game, men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the NCAA tournament and baseball team advance to the College World Series. Across the nation, it is rare to have success in each of these four sports programs. I am confident that all of these programs are in position for continued success. The month of June also saw 17 All-America honors bestowed upon 12 student-athletes following their performances at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition, women’s golfers Daniela Darquea and Dewi Weber also received All-America honors following their impressive seasons. I also would like to congratulate 2015 National Champion and Hurricane diving alum Sam Dorman as he represents Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Sam earned his spot on Team USA following a first-place performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. Make sure to follow his journey throughout the 2016 Summer Olympic Games via twitter at @CanesSwimDive. Fans should also stay tuned for the most up to date information on all of our Olympic qualifiers by visiting Hurricanesports. com and by following us on twitter at @MiamiHurricanes. Many of our teams are already working towards next year, including 50 student-athletes, who have begun their collegiate journeys. I would like to wish all of our new student-athletes, the very best of luck as they begin their respective journeys at The U. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Go Canes! Blake James

Hurricanes Make Division I Athletics History
With the Miami Hurricanes baseball team advancing to the College World Series, the University of Miami made athletics history. Miami became the only school in NCAA Division I athletics to have its football team play in a bowl game, men’s and women’s basketball teams reach the NCAA tournament and baseball team advance to the College World Series during the 2015-16 academic year. “The 2015-16 year has been a tremendous success for all of our programs at the University of Miami and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of out student-athletes, coaches and support staffs,” said Miami Director of Athletics Blake James. “Across the nation, it is rare to have success in each of these four sports programs. I firmly believe that all of these programs are in position for continued success and I look forward to baseball’s run in Omaha.” In 2016, the Miami Hurricanes extended their college-baseball record with their 44th straight trip to the NCAA postseason, a streak that dates to 1973. Awarded the No. 3 national seed for its dominant regular season, the Hurricanes went a perfect 3-0 in the NCAA Regional round and topped Boston College in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional to advance to the College World Series for the 25th time in program history. Miami’s 25 CWS trips are the second-most of any program nationwide, trailing only Texas’ 35. The 2015-16 Hurricanes men’s basketball team played its way into the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the second time in four seasons, and just the third time in school history. Miami ended the season ranked No. 10 by the Associated Press and No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Canes were ranked in the polls a school record 18 straight weeks and ranked top-15 for a school record 14 weeks. Miami’s 27 wins were the second-most victories in school history, behind 29 in the 2012-13 season. The Hurricanes finished 13-5 in ACC action, tied for second place in the league and posted a perfect 9-0 mark at home in conference play and defeated five ranked teams. The Miami women’s basketball team posted a stellar 24-9 (10-6 ACC) record in 2015-16 to tie for the fifth-most wins in a single season in program history. The Hurricanes reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons and earned a No. 5 seed, tied for their fourth-highest seed ever. Miami, which won its first 10 games of the year, also advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the second time after defeating No. 14/10 Florida State, 74-56, in the quarterfinals. The University of Miami football team earned a bid to its 39th bowl game following an 8-4 regular season in 2015, during which it posted victories against Nebraska, nationally-ranked Duke and defending ACC Coastal Champion Georgia Tech. Miami opened the season on a high note, as it went 3-0 for the just the 17th time in the last 60 years. The Hurricanes finished the regular season winning four of their final five games and were selected to play in the 2015 Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Piric Named Hurricanes Men’s Tennis Coach
Director of Athletics Blake James has named Aljosa Piric as the head men’s tennis coach at the University of Miami, the school announced June 22. “Coach Piric has excelled as both a head coach at Old Dominion as well as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech,” James said. “I am confident his passion, drive and vision will have our men’s tennis program in place to compete at the highest levels of the ACC and the NCAA.” Aljosa Piric (Al-O-sha PEEr-ick) comes to Coral Gables after five seasons with Old Dominion University, where he was recently named the 2016 Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year for the Atlantic Region. In his last two seasons in Norfolk, Va., he led the Monarchs to a 37-8 record, propelling the mid-major team from unranked to a season-high No. 28 ITA mark in 2016. A native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Piric is familiar with the Atlantic Coast Conference after serving as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech for three seasons, where he helped the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA Sweet 16 and a No. 13 ranking in 2011. Piric also has been a Bosnia and Herzegovina Davis Cup Team member, directed the Stamford Indoor Tennis Academy in New England and was the top singles and doubles player for the Richmond Spiders while in college. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Director of Athletics Blake James, Senior Associate AD Jason Layton and the rest of the search committee members for giving me the incredible opportunity to lead the University of Miami men’s tennis program,” Piric said. “This truly is an honor. I am extremely grateful, and I look forward to doing my very best to help bring Miami tennis back to national prominence. My wife Jessica and I are thrilled to be part of the U family.” Piric, who was hired by ODU in June 2011, led the 2015-16 Monarchs to the championship match of the 2016 Conference USA Tournament, posting a 21-5 overall record and ending the season ranked No. 48 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Old Dominion took down a total of four nationally ranked opponents that season: No. 25 NC State (4-1), No. 34 Dartmouth (4-3), No. 69 UNCW (6-1) and No. 70 William & Mary (4-0). Before taking over at Old Dominion, Piric spent three years as assistant coach at Georgia Tech. Piric has coached numerous sectional champions and top level U.S. junior players while working at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Academy. Piric coached the Bosnian National boys 18-and-under junior team at the team European Championships in Catania, Italy. In 2015 he coached the Bosnian National boys 18-and-under junior team at the European individual championships in Closters, Switzerland. Piric graduated from the University of Richmond in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. As a member of the Spiders tennis team, Piric played at No. 1 singles and doubles and served as team captain his senior season. In 1999, Piric was selected to the Bosnian Davis Cup National team that competed against Egypt and Luxembourg in Cairo, Egypt. He attended Mills Godwin High School in Richmond, Va., where he won the Virginia High School State Championship in both singles and doubles. He and his wife, Jessica, have two children: daughter, Mila, and son, Luca.

Dorman to Represent Team USA at Rio Olympics
University of Miami diving alum Sam Dorman will trade in orange and green for red, white and blue as he represents Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Dorman, along with synchronized 3-meter partner Michael Hixon, clinched the U.S. bid in the event Wednesday night with a firstplace finish at U.S. Olympic Trials at the IU Natatorium on the IUPUI campus. Competing together for the first time, Dorman and Hixon posted a first-place score of 1308.36 points. In a heated battle throughout the finals with reigning Olympic bronze medalists Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen, it was Dorman and Hixon – partners for just over one month’s time – who emerged victorious. “Sam is absolutely at the top of his game,” Miami head diving coach Randy Ableman said ahead of Wednesday’s synchro 3-meter finals. “He’s in perfect shape. He’s doing the hardest dives in the world, and doing them spectacularly. It’s very gratifying to be a part of that development, and to see a kid achieve so many of his goals and dreams.” Dorman is the 12th Hurricane to qualify for the Olympics under the tutelage of Ableman, who just finished his 23rd year at the helm in Coral Gables. Dorman and Hixon were already among the nation’s best 3-meter divers, but with such limited time together as a synchro team, Dorman said the key was learning how his new partner handled a competition environment. “I think when we started off, we realized there needed to be a lot of communication and a sense of how we compete and not just how to be synched up. We had to talk to each other and say, ‘Hey, how do you do in meets? How do you work? Do you need to be hyped up? What makes you get all nervous and worked up? How can we both work with each other so we can keep each other’s heads level?’ I think that was the most important part of us doing synchro,” Dorman said. 2016 will mark the second straight Olympics where a Miami Hurricane diver will represent Team USA; Brittany Viola competed in the platform event at the 2012 Olympics in London. Dorman and Hixon entered the final round with a lead of 56.52 points over Dumais and Ipsen, a margin that gave them the cushion they needed to secure their trip to Brazil. They won with a score 47.97 points ahead of Dumais and Ipsen’s 1,260.39. Dorman, 24, is a four-time national team member who has won four synchronized three-meter national titles, most recently with Ipsen at the 2015 winter nationals. The NCAA three-meter national champion as a senior at Miami, Dorman received a degree in mechanical engineering in 2015. In the past two years he has partnered with some of USA Diving’s elite in synchro competition, including David Boudia, Dumais and Ipsen. “That’s what so special about Sam,” Ableman said. “He came in not even as a very highly touted recruit, but a very raw talent with a lot of ability I knew it would take a couple of years to develop. “He’s worked his tail off…it’s a testament to all of his hard work. It’s not easy to make huge strides once you’re in college, and he just keeps getting better. He’s better now than he was a month ago.”

University of Miami Donating to Outside Organizations
With the great success that our student-athletes and athletic programs have had both on and off the field, our department is continuously asked for donations to help support the fundraising activities of organizations in the community. The NCAA has put into place bylaws to help preserve the eligibility of our student-athletes, as well as maintain the integrity of the recruitment of prospective student-athletes. According to these bylaws collegiate institutions may only provide donations (tickets, autographs, etc.) to charitable, educational or non-for-profit organizations. These donations may not help support high school athletic programs or be earmarked in any way to benefit recruited prospective student-athletes. In men’s basketball, donations from a university may not be made to non-profit organizations that expend funds for the benefit of non-scholastic teams (e.g., AAU teams), recruits or individuals associated with recruits. If you are interested in asking the University of Miami for a donation to a charitable cause or for student-athletes to participate in your promotional activity, we would ask that you complete the University of Miami’s Donation/Promotional Request form available at hurricanesports.com or by e-mailing athleticcommunityrelations@miami.edu. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. Please contact the University of Miami Athletics Compliance Department with any questions regarding NCAA, ACC or University of Miami rules or regulations at athleticscompliance@miami.edu or 305-284-2692. Also, please remember to always ASK BEFORE YOU ACT! Sincerely,
Craig Anderson Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance

My favorite part of being a Hurricane is feeling like I am home. I was at UTEP for two years, but now I am back in Florida. I grew up a Hurricane. My dad played football here and my mom went to school here. It definitely feels like home. It was a great first year for me at Miami. We won the ACC Championships during indoors and had a good year as a team outdoors, too. It was great to medal at conference and help the team and I was so excited to make it to nationals. That was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to go back next year.
Our team is built to last. We have so many talented athletes all over the roster. Losing seniors like Dakota Dailey-Harris and Alysha Newman would be tough on any team, but I think we have the talent coming back to contend in the ACC again. Training with Shakima Wimbley has made me better. We push each other on the track and both of us have seen improvements this year. We both run the 200 and 400 and run on both relays, so we work together a lot. Now I’m focused on Canadian Olympic Trials. I’m hoping to earn a spot on the Canadian Olympic Team and compete in Rio in August. Competing in the Olympics is something that I think every track athlete dreams of. Being able to potentially represent Canada is really exciting for me.

This summer is a busy one. Next week I have Olympic Trials and World Junior trials. The goal is to qualify for World Juniors and go to Poland and, God willing, go to Rio. That’s the plan, but I am also taking a class right now in Summer A. It’s good to get ahead for next semester. My sophomore year started off rough for me indoors. I got sick, so that messed me up, but I didn’t lose hope. I knew I was going to do something big this year and I ran a PR twice. It’s not done, yet. I still have two major competitions coming up and they’re great opportunities to do something great. I’m excited to go home. I haven’t been home since Christmas, but I won’t be home much. I will probably be home for two weeks and then traveling with track. If I make it to Rio, I won’t be home all of August and then I will come straight here. It’s great to see family, but there’s also a lot of business to take care of on the track.
I’m very happy with how I’ve been running, but I know I have room for improvement, too. I know I can run much faster. I just have to keep getting my race together. Once I run the perfect race I think I’ll be able to shock a lot of people. All of us have a very friendly atmosphere here. We are all good friends and help each other out. When we get on the track, we try to push each other to get better. I am excited to get with the younger guys that come in next year and show them how we do things. Freshman year can be tough, so I want to show them the ropes and help them succeed. It’s good to know what is expected, what to do and what not to do and I think I can help my new teammates with that. I want to make sure they can get as much as they can out of their freshman year. We don’t get a lot of free time in season, but when we do, I like to fly model planes. I’ve been flying since I was like 10. I’ve always been interested in planes, so I started to fly and used to crash a lot. But as I got better, I got more interested in it and now I have a whole collection of planes that I fly.
