From the Director of Athletics Hurricanes Fans, The 2015-16 athletics campaign was a great success in the classroom, in the community and on the fields of competition for Hurricanes Athletics. We are excited to continue expanding on our success as we start the 2016-17 academic year. In the classroom, nine of our teams scored 990 or better out of a possible 1,000 points. In the community, Miami student-athletes accumulated over 2,700 hours of community service and campus engagement during the academic year. In competition, we had 11 programs qualify for postseason play and 31 student-athletes recognized as All-Americans. We also were the only University to compete in a bowl game, have its men’s and women’s basketball teams play in the NCAA tournament and baseball advance to the College World Series. Another amazing year at The U kicks off on Saturday, August 13, when we host our annual family friendly CanesFest event at the BankUnited Center. Football coach Mark Richt, his staff and members of this year’s team will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. Additionally, we will have alumni autographs, interactive games for kids and chances to win prizes. Make sure to bring your family to meet our Hurricanes family! In addition to the start of football and our other fall seasons, some other notable items as we head into August. Aljosa Piric, our new men’s tennis coach, has already begun working hard after spending five seasons at Old Dominion University, where he was recently named the 2016 Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year for the Atlantic Region. Welcome Coach Piric! Diver Kara McCormack was selected by the Atlantic Coast Conference as one of two nominees for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Congratulations Kara on this tremendous accomplishment! Finally, I would like to wish the best of luck to our current and former Miami Hurricanes who will be taking their respective athletic and coaching talents to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We will be cheering you on. Good luck to Andy Kershaw (Head Manager for USA Swimming), Randy Ableman (USA Diving Assistant Coach), Marcela Marić (Croatia – diver, 3-meter), Murielle Ahoure (Ivory Coast - Sprints), Sam Dorman (USA - Diving), Alysha Newman (Canada - Track and Field - pole vault), Heather Arseth (Mauritius - Swimming) and Catalina Perez (Colombia - Women’s Soccer) in the 2016 summer games. The opening ceremonies are on August 5. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Can’t wait to see you at CanesFest on August 13th! Go Canes! Blake James

Paradise Camp Weekend Event Adds To The U Family Culture When Mark Richt was hired as the University of Miami football head coach on Dec. 4, 2015, one thing was absolutely clear. Miami truly had welcomed back one of its own to lead the Hurricanes football program. “I understand the proud traditions at the University of Miami, academically and athletically, - football in particular,” Richt said at his introductory press conference. “I know what it’s about.” Richt, 1982 Miami alum, knows that The U is all about family, a fact which he so often preaches to his vast Twitter following of over 200,000. His return to Coral Gables has not only marked a new era of Miami football, but it also has ignited a buzz around the program with the fans, donors and Miami’s prestigious group of former and current NFL players. This buzz was never more evident than earlier this month as the Miami football team played host to the program’s inaugural Paradise Camp in Coral Gables. The list of household names in attendance at the Greentree Practice Field was nothing short of eye-popping and it signified that The U family is truly committed to assisting Richt in restoring the Hurricanes to prominence. Hurricane legends Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, Jeremy Shockey, Najeh Davenport, Gino Torretta, Bennie Blades, Phillip Buchanon, Jon Beason, Calais Campbell, Brett Romberg, Warren Sapp, Antrel Rolle and Duke Johnson all returned to The U to be part of an instructional camp that was the envy of every other Division I institution across the nation. “It’s important to give back to The U because we know this is where it all started for us,” Irvin said. “This is where we made the sacred oath, the declaration, that no matter what, we’ll always come back. This place is what links the years together.”

These former greats came back because they love this university - Coach Richt

Each of the Hurricane legends that returned to the Greentree Practice Fields for Paradise Camp played a major role in the camp, whether it was serving as a speaker, celebrity guest or coach. Most importantly, the Hurricane alums in attendance were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the future – not just by sharing their respective experiences at The U – but also by showing campers how to practice, what it means to be a Hurricane and how to compete when stepping on the legendary Greentree Practice Fields. “My toughest games were right here on the Greentree Practice Fields,” Shockey said. “When I went up against guys like Edward Reed and Sean Taylor, games were cake.” Needless to say, campers in attendance had no problem listening to a coaching staff that boasts over 40 years of NFL experience, numerous Super Bowl championships and several national championships on its resume.

“There’s a lot of eyes bugging out of these young men watching some of these guys walk around,” Richt said. “It’s a ‘wow, that’s really him’-type thing. They’re a little starstruck.” In total, the event featured over 150 campers and took place under the lights on the UM campus. The camp then closed with a passionate speech by Lewis. Not a bad way for a camper with dreams of playing at the next level to end the night. “To know that the former players love the university the way these guys do and are willing to spend their time and efforts to come here is just awesome,” Richt said. What was equally awesome is the dedication, commitment and love these former student-athletes have for their alma mater. “These former greats came back because they love this university,” Richt said. “They came on their own dime. They did not get flown in. They are not getting a big ole’ paycheck. I just said ‘Hey, man I need your help’. If you would like to, come help us coach this camp.” These Hurricane alums not only helped Richt coach at Paradise camp, but they also reaffirmed to those in attendance the legacy and family atmosphere within the Miami football program. “I don’t think words can describe what it means to me to be a part of this university,” Shockey said. “You just can’t get any tighter than the players that went to the University of Miami.” “It meant the world to me to be a Miami Hurricane,” Torretta said. “I wanted a chance to win a championship and be a part of a championship team. The bar of college football was set by

the University of Miami and there is nothing greater than being a part of that winning tradition. The sacrifice and the work that it takes to get there and to continue to stay there have stayed with me for the rest of my life. Nothing will ever be like my time here, at the University of Miami and when you win here there is no better city than Miami.” The return of so many legendary players to Coral Gables is nothing new since Director of Athletics Blake James named Richt the 24th head coach in program history. “I don’t care if you were part of a national championship team or not, if you played for The U, you’re family and you’re part of the legacy of this place,” Richt said. Prior to the Hurricanes’ annual Orange and Green Spring Game, Richt welcomed back over 220 former players to Coral Gables for the annual spring banquet that filled the James L. Knight Sports Complex. The event was the highest attended football alumni event. During the event, Richt preached the importance of sticking together as a U family. “I think the fact that Coach Richt has opened up to some of the older players is a real positive,” Davenport said. “It’s just exciting to know that we can tap into that alumni base to try and bring that spirit back.” “When I think back to the time when I played here, we always used to talk about the family and the connectivity that The U provides,” Irvin said. “We said it that [The U] was the string that will weave us all together. It was that way when we played on the football field and that’s the way it is now still to this day.” Irvin, who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Dallas Cowboys, has never been shy about sharing his love for his alma mater. He also shares in Richt’s vision of uniting the Hurricanes past and present utilizing the program’s unprecedented ‘family’ culture. “It’s amazing when you think about it,” Irvin said about the program’s history. “Fifty-eight [consecutive wins] in the Orange Bowl. You know how many years that is you walk in that stadium and you walk out a winner. “And [those records] are

more than something you can try to accomplish from a physical standpoint. That’s a connectivity. That’s passing it on. And [Richt is] getting back to that. He’s running towards history and not away from it.” Richt returns to his alma mater in the hopes of restoring the Hurricanes to national prominence, but the Boca Raton native knows the journey to get back to the top will take time. He also knows that it will take the help of the U Family. “You’ve got a brotherhood forever and I think that’s the greatest thing of all,” Irvin said. “No matter where you are, no matter what, you’ll see somebody and they will show you how great it is to be a part of that brotherhood for the rest of your life.”

Jackson Earns Administrator of the Year Award

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) named University of Miami Assistant Athletics Director of Student-Athlete Development Shirelle Jackson as the recipient of the 2016 Nell Jackson Award. The Nell Jackson Administrator of the Year Award is presented annually to an athletics administrator who exemplifies the personal qualities and professional accomplishments of Dr. Nell Jackson. This award is given to an individual who demonstrates qualities such as courage, conviction and perseverance, and who is an advocate for gender equity and diversity. “I am humbled and honored to be named the 2016 Nell Jackson Administrator of the Year,” Jackson said. “I have the wonderful opportunity to work with some of the finest young people in the world today and I am so grateful for the opportunity the University of Miami has given my family and me. I also am thankful to work with such a strong group of athletics administrators, who truly care about the future of our studentathletes.” Jackson is one of eight honorees that were recognized today by NACWAA. She will receive the award on Oct. 11 in Kansas City, Mo. at the 2016 Administrator of the Year Luncheon presented by AXA, in conjunction with the annual NACWAA National Rally. “I could not be more excited and proud that NACWAA has chosen to recognize Shirelle,” said Deputy Athletics Director/SWA Jennifer Strawley. “Her passion and drive have made an indelible mark on our student-athlete community and her commitment to diversity and inclusion has transformed our athletics department.” As the department’s Assistant Athletics Director of Student-Athlete Development, Jackson oversees the Hurricanes’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and directs all student-athlete advancement programs. In just two short years, Jackson has transformed the Miami student-athlete experience by creating and implementing a comprehensive development area with a true commitment to diversity and inclusion for all Miami student-athletes and has served as a strong advocate for gender equality. Jackson joined the athletics department as the Director of Student-Athlete Development in March 2014. She spent the previous five years in various capacities in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM. Before arriving at UM, Jackson was the Director of Athletic Academic Support Services from 2005-08 at FIU, where she oversaw the management and operation of the school’s academic support program for its 400 student-athletes. As a student-athlete, Jackson was a four-year letterwinner for the women’s track and field team at Bowling Green. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green in 1994 and her master’s degree in Counseling from Central Connecticut State in 1998. She is married to Jason Jackson, who is the television host and courtside reporter for Miami Heat telecasts on Fox Sports. The couple has two children – Justin and Jordan. 19

Hurricanes Headed to 2016 Rio Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympics begin this week and the University of Miami will be well represented in Brazil. Six Hurricanes athletes will travel to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics. Divers Sam Dorman and Marcela Marić, swimmer Heather Arseth, soccer goalie Catalina Perez and track and field standouts Murielle Ahoure and Alysha Newman will compete for their respective countries at the largest and most famous international athletic competition in the world. Soccer action begins on Aug. 3, while swimming and diving starts on Aug. 10 and track and field opens on Aug. 12. Perez is the first Hurricane set to compete at the 2016 Olympics, as she will join Colombia in its opening match on Aug. 3 at 9 p.m. ET when they face France at Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Olympic soccer competition will run from Aug. 3-19. Colombia is in Group G along with France, New Zealand and the United States. It will be the second consecutive year Perez is competing with the Colombian National Team in a major international competition, following the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. “It’s every athlete’s dream to go to the Olympics. I feel very fortunate to represent my country in Rio,” Perez said. “I am very thankful for everyone’s support toward making this happen. It hasn’t just been a process of months; it’s been a process of years.” Perez, a redshirt junior, has played with Colombia’s senior national team for several years. Last summer, she started the first FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout round match in Colombian history and did not concede a goal during her time in net against the United States. The three Hurricanes in swimming and diving are up next at the 2016 Olympics, with Arseth and Dorman opening competition on Aug. 10 and Marić diving on Aug. 12. Arseth, who transferred to Miami prior to her junior season of 2013-14, was one of Miami’s top point-getters during her two seasons as a Hurricane. She is eager to compete on such a big stage again, returning for her second consecutive Olympic Games. After competing in the 200-meter freestyle in 2012, she will represent Mauritius in the 100-meter freestyle beginning at 12:02 p.m. ET on Aug. 10. “It is my second time in the Olympics, so I have a better idea of what to expect,” Arseth said. “It doesn’t take away from the excitement and the anticipation leading up to it. I’m definitely very excited to represent Mauritius, and it’ll be my first time representing The U, and that’s something I’m looking forward to.” Dorman, along with synchronized 3-meter partner Michael Hixon, is set to dive in the event beginning at 3 p.m. ET on Aug. 10. The duo clinched their spot in the Olympics with a first-place finish at U.S. Olympic Trials in June. Dorman and Hixon, who competed together for the first time at the U.S. Olympic Trials, posted a first-place score of 1308.36 points. In a heated battle throughout the finals with reigning Olympic bronze medalists Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen, it was Dorman and Hixon – partners for just over one month’s time – who emerged victorious. “Sam is absolutely at the top of his game,” Miami head diving coach Randy Ableman said. “He’s in perfect shape. He’s doing the hardest dives in the world, and doing them spectacularly. It’s very gratifying to be a part of that development, and to see a kid achieve so many of his goals and dreams.” Marić made history, becoming the first diver of Croatian descent to ever qualify for the Olympics. She earned her spot in the Olympics after her performance at the 2016 FINA World Cup. The rising sophomore will make her Olympic debut in the women’s 3-meter springboard, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 12. “Becoming the first Croatian diver to ever qualify makes me incredibly honored and excited to represent my country in Rio,” Marić said. “I also want to say that none of this would be possible without my amazing Miami coaches, Randy Ableman and Dario Di Fazio, for whom I am greatly thankful.” The final Hurricanes in action will be a pair of track and field stars, Ahoure and Newman, looking to excel against the world’s best in their respective events. Ahoure is back in the Olympics and will serve as the flag bearer for her native Ivory Coast at Friday’s opening ceremonies. The gifted sprinter returns to the Olympics after running for the Ivory Coast in both the women’s 100m and 200m at the 2012 Summer Games. Ahoure will compete in both events in 2016, running the 100m on Aug. 12 at 10:55 a.m. ET and the 200m at 8:35 a.m. ET on Aug. 15. The 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 200m, Ahoure currently ranks third in the world in the 100m (10.78 seconds), making her a strong contender to leave Rio with a medal. Newman is the last Hurricane scheduled to compete in Rio, set to jump in the women’s pole vault at 8:45 a.m. ET on Aug. 16. The Canadian Senior National record holder (4.61m), Newman clinched her spot in Rio by winning the Canadian championship. Her mark of 4.40m at the 2016 Canadian Championships broke Stephanie McCann’s Canadian championship record of 4.35m that had stood since 2002. “This has been a dream of mine since I was little,” Newman said. “To be able to make the Olympic Team by winning my first Canadian senior title and setting a meet record is better than I could have dreamed. I’m so excited to represent my country on the biggest stage and make everyone proud!”

Miami Football to Partner with the AYFL

The University of Miami football team has announced the beginning of a year-long partnership with the American Youth Football League (AYFL) (ages 13 and below) in Broward County. The partnership began July 18 at PAL Field in Plantation Fla., with the first of two coaches’ clinics. Miami head coach Mark Richt and other Hurricane assistant coaches will be on hand to provide instruction to youth coaches in the AYFL. “I couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with the AYFL,” Richt said. “Through this partnership, we will be able to give kids and coaches the proper instruction they need to help advance their skills. This is a great opportunity to get out into the community and speak to some of our youth football programs in the AYFL. I’m looking forward to this clinic and to visiting other youth teams in parks throughout the tri-county area in the near future.” The AYFL is one of South Florida’s largest youth football leagues and features teams from Coconut Creek, Cooper City, Coral Springs, Davie, Delray, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Sunrise, Tamarac, Weston and West Pines. “I think it is very important that the premier youth football program partners with the University of Miami in order to get the proper instruction from the Hurricane coaching staff,” said AYFL Executive Vice President Joel Greenberg. “I think the overall experience will provide great excitement and help generate awareness of youth football and help continue to grow the game with UM.” The partnership will provide coaches of the AYFL with a customized concussion protocol in collaboration with UHealth Sports Medicine to assist coaches with overall safety. “In a lot of youth leagues the coaches are the only individuals who have the necessary information when it comes to dealing with concussions,” said UHealth Sports Medicine Dr. Gillian Hotz. “Being safe and having fun are the most important aspects to youth football and we want to ensure that people are educated at a young age.” Hurricane football student-athletes and cheerleaders also will make appearances throughout the year at AYFL parks. Members of the AYFL will attend the Hurricanes’ game against FAU on Sept. 10 as part of the partnership. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, @CanesFootball, or visit our website at HurricaneSports. com. Shaquille Quarterman Orange Park, Fla. | Oakleaf HS Freshman linebacker Shaquille Quarterman is preparing for his first season as a Miami Hurricane. The consensus four-star recruit out of Orange Park, Fla. is one of the top Hurricanes to watch this fall. Quarterman enrolled at The U in January of 2016 and is coming off a strong spring campaign. How would you describe yourself as a player? What should Miami fans expect from you this year? “I want to be a defensive leader, someone to hold down that side of the ball. I don’t feel the need to be out there yelling on the field but I do play with a certain level of passion so the emotions do come out naturally. I give it my all…I’m also not reluctant to pick someone else up by leading through example or putting in extra work.” What’s your favorite football related activity so far? “The film room, definitely, especially when Coach Diaz is in there with us, it’s crazy. I watch film on my own, but it’s completely different when you’re with him. He recognizes things that I miss and it helps me to have someone be there to double check on my fundamentals. Working with him has been eye opening.”

How much are you looking forward to the upcoming season? What are you looking forward to? “I’m very excited about it, also a little nervous I won’t lie…but I’m excited to just play in general. This time last year I was conditioning for another high school year but now it’s the big time. I’ve been waiting for this for a while now. I was committed since my 10th grade year so I’ve wanted nothing more than to just get here. I never wavered during my recruitment process, so now that the time is here, I’m working as hard as possible to hit the ground running.” What was it like at the Paradise Camp, seeing Hurricane legend Ray Lewis? “It was breath taking. I have gone on YouTube before to watch his inspirational videos, but there’s nothing like really meeting him in person. You start to realize that he is very knowledgeable.” What makes the University of Miami such a great place, and why did you decide to come here? “Definitely the location! And of course you can’t forget about the tradition here, the alumni, this program and this college was all built on success. Both of those reasons were big for me. I also had a teammate from high school (Darrion Owens) come to UM and really excel. I felt that I could do the same thing, so he gave me the confidence to come here and try to do it for myself. Not to mention, I’m also getting a great education.”

Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem announced the addition of Diego Flaquer and Keith Herston to the Hurricanes coaching staff. Flaquer will coach men’s sprints, hurdles and relays, while Herston will coach jumps and combined events for the Hurricanes. The two join Deem, associate head coach Cory Young and assistant coaches Damon Griffiths and Shannon Hatchett on the Hurricanes’ coaching staff. “We are excited about the additions of Diego and Keith to our staff,” Deem said. “It is great to welcome their families to our Hurricanes track family. They are two gifted and dedicated coaches that have proven themselves as difference makers in track and field. Diego and Keith will be assets to our program in student-athlete development and recruiting as we continue to strive for excellence in the ACC and on a national stage.” Flaquer comes to Miami after spending three years at Oklahoma State, helping elevate the Cowboys to a national level sprint program. Oklahoma State’s men won the Big XII indoor conference championship title twice in Flaquer’s tenure and never finished lower than third from 2014-2016. The Cowboys also scored at the NCAA Indoor Championships in each of Flaquer’s three seasons, finishing as high as sixth in 2014, and earned a pair of top-20 finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the same three-year span. “I would like to thank head coach Amy Deem for bringing me and my wife, Stacy, to Coral Gables,” Flaquer said. “We are ecstatic to join the U family. Everything we have seen at Miami has been absolutely first-class, from the beautiful campus and athletic facilities to the top-notch character and professionalism of the coaching staff assembled by Coach Deem.” At Oklahoma State, Flaquer coached John Teeters and Tyreek Hill in the men’s sprints, developing the duo into All-Americans. Teeters was the 2015 NCAA runner-up in the men’s 60m, while Hill was a 2014 NCAA finalist in the indoor 200m. Teeters went on to set the Oklahoma State school record in the 60m and 100m, earning three 40

First Team All-America honors in his career. Hill was the 2015 Big XII men’s 200m indoor champion before placing fifth in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Herston joins the Hurricanes family after spending the previous five years as the jumps and combined events coach at Texas State University. The Bobcats’ jumps and combined events groups saw nationally renowned success under Herston’s leadership. In his time at Texas State, Herston coached jumper Allie Saunders to a pair of First Team All-America honors and saw pole vaulters Logan Cunningham and Anicka Newell qualify for the 2016 Olympics. In total, Herston coached nine All-Americans, 24 conference champions and helped Texas State capture five conference team titles. Herston’s student-athletes earned 58 allconference honors in his tenure at Texas State and set 12 school records. “I am thrilled about my new home at The U,” Herston said. “The competitive history of Miami track and field, the great leadership of Coach Deem, along with the resources available to prepare the student-athletes to be successful at the highest levels athletically and academically, made this the ideal place for me.” Prior to his time at Texas State, Herston was an assistant coach at Sam Houston State. At Sam Houston State, Herston helped guide Matthew Johnson to 2011 NCAA All-American honors in the decathlon and to top-10 finishes at the 2011 USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships and the 2011 Pan-American Games. Also at SHSU, Herston coached four Southland Conference champions, 13 All-Southland Conference athletes, four team MVP award winners, five school record holders and six NCAA preliminary round qualifiers. As a collegiate athlete, Herston competed in the horizontal jumps at the University of Alabama, where he was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and earned a bachelor’s degree in human environmental sciences at Alabama in 2007.

Reed, from Ewing, N.J., is majoring in sport administration with a minor in marketing and communications at Miami. He is expected to graduate from The U in May of 2017, after a four-year basketball career with the Hurricanes. This season Reed was also named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball Team and the All-ACC Academic Honor Roll. Following his junior campaign, he was listed on Miami’s Dean’s List (3.5+ GPA), Athletics Director Honor Roll (3.2+ GPA) and Book Buster Honor Roll (3.0+ GPA). On the court, Reed was one of just three Hurricanes to start all 35 games last season. He averaged 11.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.8 steals in 28.8 minutes per game for the Canes, who played in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The 6-foot-6 guard hit 46.9 percent (129-275) of his shots from the field, 38.3 percent (46-120) from three and 81.6 percent (84-103) at the line. He posted one double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds vs. Buffalo in the NCAA Tournament and recorded his seasonbest 21 points against No. 3 Virginia on Feb. 22 in Coral Gables. niccola venezia wantagh, N.Y. | Major: HSC General Looking back on my freshman year, it was amazing. It was both exciting and busy. We were always on the move--either playing soccer, going to class, socializing or traveling--but that’s what I liked most about it. I have already made memories and friends that will last a lifetime. I enjoyed playing in the most competitive soccer conference in the country while attending a great school. I was honored to receive Rookie of the Year, so that was cool, too! I made a ton of memories my first year at Miami, but my favorite memory was when we met David Beckham! Not only did our entire team get to meet him, but we also took pictures, got autographs, and our team was featured in his documentary. It was amazing to meet such a legendary soccer player and a genuinely nice person. This was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. All of the players were very helpful in getting us adjusted, but the one person that stands out to me is Shannon McCarthy. Since my first day in Miami, before preseason started, she was on the field running fitness with me and the other freshmen, also making sure we knew everything we needed to know. She even invited us over and cooked delicious meals for us :)

The weather is a given. It is always beautiful in Miami. Our campus has a huge lake along with a million palm trees, which we hang hammocks from. We go to the beach year-round and can always play soccer outdoors. That being said, we have an amazing field and athletic facilities. There’s nothing to not like about living/going to school in Miami. This summer, I’ve been home enjoying time with my family and friends. I have been playing soccer with my club team, Farmingdale United, and with my summer team, Long Island Rough Riders, along with preparing for preseason. I took a vacation back to Florida in June with my sister and friend. In two weeks I will be traveling to Colorado to visit my teammate, Jamie Brunworth, and then we will head back to school together. I am beyond excited for the 2016 season to begin. I am looking forward to playing with the incoming freshman and welcoming them to the team. There are always things to improve on, but going into my sophomore year I would like to see our team as a whole improve. Last season we lost a handful of games in double overtime, most of which we were very capable of winning. I think winning more games is something we can definitely achieve, and as a team, we have our minds set to do that this season.

2016 RESULTS (21-6, 12-2 ACC)

Miami Signs Virginia Transfer Maci Epstein CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews has announced the signing of Maci Epstein as the final member of the Hurricanes’ 2016 recruiting class. A transfer from the University of Virginia, Epstein will join Miami as a redshirt senior for the 2016-17 season for her final year of eligibility. “I’m looking forward to Maci having an immediate impact on this team,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Her personality, fire and desire to finish her collegiate tennis career are what I’m excited about. She has work ahead of her, but we will help get her where she needs to be.” Epstein, who hails from Winter Park, Fla., becomes the second Floridian in Miami’s 2016 class, joining Sara Culbertson, a Coral Gables native. After playing three years at Virginia, the 5-foot-7inch right-hander redshirted last season and graduated in May with a degree in media studies and sociology. Although her freshman campaign was cut well short early due to an injury in February of 2013, Epstein still managed to compile stellar career records of 64-33 singles and 82-30 in doubles at Virginia.

As a junior in 2014-15, Epstein went 30-10 in singles and 31-11 in doubles for the Cavaliers, marking the second consecutive year she won over 20 singles matches and at least 30 doubles matches. During her time in Charlottesville, Va., Epstein ascended as high as No. 102 nationally in singles and fifth in doubles, the latter then good for the best ranking in school history. Virginia finished top-15 in the ITA national rankings all three of Epstein’s years there, with top-10 spots in both 2014 and 2015 when the team also won its first two ACC Championships. The Cavaliers made the Sweet 16 each season, advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history in 2014. “Maci has experience playing for a great program in our conference,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “The transition should be immediate.” Prior to college, Epstein had a prolific high school and juniors career coming out of Lake Highland Prep. As a senior in 2012, she won the 2A state championship and was named the Florida Dairy Farmers State Player of the Year. A Blue Chip prospect according to Tennis Recruiting Network, Epstein earned titles at the 2012 Florida Open and the 2011 Copper Bowl. Epstein is the first Division I transfer to join the Hurricanes since Anna Bartenstein, an eventual two-time ITA All-American, came to Miami in the fall of 2009 following her freshman season at Tulane. She will be the lone senior on Miami’s roster in 2016-17. Miami’s incoming class, which was previously ranked No. 17 by Tennis Recruiting Network, now features four players, with Epstein, Culbertson, Dominika Paterova of the Czech Republic and Estela Perez-Somarriba of Spain. Hurricanes Picked to Finish Second in the ACC Coastal The University of Miami football team was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division according to a poll of 191 media members that were in attendance at the 2016 ACC Football Kickoff last week in Charlotte. The Hurricanes also received 50 first-place votes to win the ACC Coastal. Miami enters the 2016 campaign by returning 17 starters and 41 letterwinners from last year’s squad, which closed out the regular season on a high note by winning four of its last five games en route to earning a bid to the 2015 Sun Bowl - the program’s 39th overall bowl appearance. Quarterback Brad Kaaya leads the way for the Hurricanes’ offense as he returns for his junior season following a stellar 2015 campaign for the Hurricanes in which he threw for 3,238 yards, 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Kaaya would eventually go on to earn ACC all-conference honors. The Hurricanes’ junior signal-caller tied for fourth in the ACC Preseason Player of the Year voting. Clemson was picked as the likely ACC champion on 144 ballots, followed by Florida State with 39, North Carolina with 7 and Louisville with one vote. CANES PARTNER WITH THE AYFL The Miami football team announced the beginning of a year-long partnership with the American Youth Football League (AYFL) (ages 13 and below) in Broward County. “I couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with the AYFL,” Richt said. “Through this partnership, we will be able to give kids and coaches the proper instruction they need to help advance their skills. Lynch and Gillis helped Vesper Boat Club win the Colgan Cup, awarded to the team with the most total points at the USRowing Club Nationals. “I am really proud of Taegan and Colleen,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “It has been such great racing for them. The more you race, the better you get, so all the experience they are gaining will help them continue to develop as athletes as well as have a big, positive impact on our whole team.” Lynch rowed in three boats for Vesper, winning gold in the women’s senior eight, silver in the women’s intermediate eight and bronze in the women’s intermediate four event. The rising junior teamed with Gillis, an incoming freshman coxswain, in the women’s intermediate eight event, while Gillis coxed Vesper’s women’s senior four boat to a silver medal. The 2016 USRowing Club National Championships were held July 13-17, on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. The event features national championship racing in 79 events in the U17, U19, intermediate and elite/senior categories. In the Olympic year, the USRowing National Championships for elite events are combined with the USRowing Club National Championships. Lynch and Gillis will be back on the water with Vesper Boat Club at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The 2016 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is the 134th edition of the event, held annually in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is hailed as the top amateur rowing event in North America.

@CanesWBB

MORE FROM KATIE MEIER... On what attributes she was most impressed with when scouting Geldof: “Serena has a true desire and tendency to be great. She wants to compete at the highest level of basketball available to her. That’s always been her goal. She knows that she has tremendous growth potential and she loves to challenge herself.” On how much it helps to have a player with Geldof’s height: “I believe she will be a player who alters shots, but also bails out her teammates when they penetrate too deep and ‘get stuck.’ We love to attack the basket and Serena provides a great option around the bucket.”

@CanesWBB Adds Serena-Lynn Geldof to 2016 Class CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier has announced the signing of Serena-Lynn Geldof to a National Letter of Intent. A 6-foot-6-inch center from Oostende, Belgium, Geldof brings a wealth of international experience to Coral Gables. Geldof, who attended KA Redingenhof Leuven in her home nation, will join the Hurricanes in the fall for the 2016-17 season. “Serena has a unique skill set and I’m very excited to work her into our system,” Meier said. “She’s extremely versatile for her size and will present matchup problems.” Geldof is set to be second 6-foot-6-inch Hurricane since Meier took charge in 2005-06, joining Shawnice “Pepper” Wilson, who transferred from Pittsburgh to Miami in 2010. Miami now has two players in its 2016 recruiting class, as Geldof joins Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) standout Sarah Mortensen, 6-foot-1-inch guard/forward originally from Denmark. Like Mortensen, ProspectsNation.com ranks Geldof among the top 20 international prospects in the class of 2016. Geldof checks in at No. 18 overall on the list, including fifth among post players.

On how she first learned about Geldof: “Serena played on the Belgian youth national team and my dear friend, Ann Wauters, was the assistant coach. She was so impressed with Serena and especially her work ethic. Ann, [the top pick in the 2000 WNBA Draft], called and implored me to recruit her.”

MORE FROM KEIL MOORE... On how beneficial Geldof’s background in quality international competitions will be for her: “I think with any international player, the level of play that they experience in FIBA events allows them to bring a more professional mindset to the college arena. Where most American players have to learn how to read a game plan, how to study film and then how to take that information and apply it to a game, international players have had those opportunities early on.” On what skills Geldof has that would potentially allow her to contribute her first year at Miami: “The defensive side of the ball will be where she makes the early contribution, as a shot blocker and shot changer . . . Defense will be there early on.”

“She has elite size and length at 6-foot-6. She is thin . . . but last summer when I was evaluating her, I was impressed with her feel for the game and touch around the rim,” ProspectsNation.com Director of Scouting Keil Moore said. “Defensively, her length will cause opposing player to change their shot on a consistent basis. She should be a more than capable shot blocker. Over four years, I think Miami has a post player who can find a role and make a consistent impact on both sides of the ball.” Dating back to 2012, Geldof has competed in seven FIBA competitions for Belgium. At the 2013 FIBA U-16 European Championship Division A, Geldof averaged 10.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots in eight games, shooting 45.7 percent from the floor and tallying a pair of double-doubles. She led all players in the tournament in blocks per game, finished fourth in field goal percentage and tallied a tournament-best 10 blocks in a victory over Croatia.

At the 2015 FIBA U18 European Championship Division A, Geldof posted 10.2 points, 8.1 boards and 2.1 blocks per game over nine contests. She again led all players in blocks per game and had the highest single-game block total (five), plus she ranked ninth in defensive rebounds an outing (5.9). Most recently, Geldof helped Belgium to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 FIBA U20 European Championship Division A. Geldof averaged 8.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.0 block and 1.0 assist per game, and she tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Spain, the eventual champion. She ranked in the top 10 among all players in both rebounds and blocks per game. Geldof has also competed in the prestigious EuroCup in both 2014 and 2015 with her Belgian club team, Lotto Young Cats. “Serena is really at the beginning of her international career, but these opportunities will only enhance her game,” Meier said. “We are really excited to welcome a freshman with such great experience.” For Meier, Geldof will be the first player she has coached at Miami who hails from Belgium, which is where Meier played professionally from 1990-93. Geldof and Mortensen will join transfers Shaneese Bailey and Neydja Petithomme, the latter of whom will be eligible after final exams in December, as newcomers for the Hurricanes in 2016-17. Miami also returns 10 of its 11 letter winners from last season. To learn more about the University of Miami women’s basketball team, follow @CanesWBB.
