UM Volleyball Begins Preseason The University of Miami volleyball team officially reported to campus to begin the preseason on Tuesday. The team returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from last year, welcoming five newcomers to the fold. “We are very excited to get started with preseason and working towards our goals,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch, who is entering her 12th season at the helm. “The team worked hard throughout the offseason and is ready to go. We look forward to getting out on the court and preparing for the season.” The Hurricanes are looking to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year, reaching the second round and posting a 26-5 overall record in 2011. With classes at UM starting on Aug. 22, the team will have two weeks to focus exclusively on volleyball to prepare for the upcoming season. In addition to practice and strength and conditioning, the team has also scheduled time for activities to help develop team chemistry. A highlight of the preseason will be the Alumni Match at the Knight Complex on Aug. 18, as players from past teams will return to Coral Gables to take part in a competitive scrimmage. Fans are invited to attend the event prior to heading to Canes Fest. The Canes will officially open the season at home in the Hurricane Invitational on Friday, August 24. Teams scheduled to compete in the tournament that weekend include Wofford, Ole Miss, Rutgers and Samford. Running Game Shines in First Scrimmage Stephen Morris

Jake Wieclaw

The Miami Hurricanes’ three-headed rushing attack of Mike James, Duke Johnson and Eduardo Clements stole the show Sunday during the first #CanesCamp scrimmage. The scrimmage lasted a little under two hours in the 90-degree heat and ended before a torrential afternoon thunderstorm. The scrimmage opened with goal line and short yardage situations as the offense showcased a number of different looks. The next set of plays flipped the field, with the ball being spotted inside the five-yard line. The running corps of James, Johnson and Clements showed toughness up the middle and burst to the outside throughout the day, while the offensive line showed athleticism and mobility to move to the outside and block to spring runs down the sidelines. The blocking wasn’t limited to the O-line; the wide receivers made some nice blocks on the outside to aid James and Johnson in long runs. “We need [big plays],” second-year head coach Al Golden. “We need some guys to step up. We lost some explosive players from a year ago.” The senior James rushed for a team-high 137 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns, including an impressive 51-yard burst down the sidelines, while outrunning three defenders. Johnson had 49 yards on nine carries and posted four touchdowns – three rushing and one receiving. He took a Morris screen pass 37 yards for a score, eliciting several “oohs” and “aahs” from teammates on some of his cutback moves. “We’ve been saying it all camp: Mike [James] looks quicker,” Golden said. “He has always been strong but now he looks healthy. “[Duke Johnson] found [the end zone] a couple of times today,” Golden said. “He has a low center of gravity and a knack for diving and finding the end zone.” Quarterbacks Stephen Morris and Ryan Williams showed good footwork to elude pressure in the pocket and scramble for yards when needed. Morris completed 24-of-36 passes for 193 yards with four touchdowns and one interception towards the end of the scrimmage. Williams threw for 121 yards and three scores on 12-of-17 passing. “I thought both [quarterbacks] showed command of the offense,” Golden said. Morris and Williams threw completions a variety of receivers; Johnson led all receivers with 44 yards. Malcolm Lewis caught three passes for 42 yards, while Kendal Thompkins hauled in a team-best five catches for 22 yards. The scrimmage ended on an interception when Dwayne Hoilett batted a ball up in the air and into the hands of Tyrone Cornileus. A.J. Highsmith registered a team-high nine tackles, while Cornileus, Tracy Howard and Ramon Buchanan all recorded seven tackles apiece. Anthony Chickillo, JaWand Blue and Cornileus each recorded a sack for the defense. HurricaneSports.com • 8 • @HurricaneSports

Preseason Football Awards Botts and Wieclaw Named to National Watch Lists Botts Named to 2012 Preseason All-ACC Team

Punter Dalton Botts and placekicker Jake Wieclaw, both of whom excelled as first-time starters with the Hurricanes in 2011, were named to national watch lists at their respective positions. Botts was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List, while Wieclaw earned placement on the Lou Groza Award Watch List. Botts was also named to the 2012 Preseason AllACC Football team, the conference announced. The Preseason All-ACC team was voted on by media members at the annual ACC Football Kickoff. The Ray Guy Award honors the nation’s top collegiate punter, while the Lou Groza Award is presented to the nation’s top placekicker. Both accolades are coordinated by the National Football Awards Association. Botts, who served as the Hurricanes’ punter in all 12 games last season as a junior, finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in punt average at 42.7 yards per punt. He booted a season-long 62-yarder in the season finale against Boston College and had one of his best games against then-No. 17 Ohio State with an average of 47.8 yards on four attempts. Originally from Taft, Calif., he had only three touchbacks in 48 attempts, with 11 kicks inside the 20 and 11 punts of at least 50 yards. The Ray Guy Award was created by the Augusta Sports Council in 2000 to honor Thomson, Ga., native and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. The award winner is determined by a national voting body of sports writers, college coaches, sports information directors and past Ray Guy Award winners. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline, and have a positive impact on the team’s success. The Watch List includes 25 punters. Wieclaw, also a rising senior, converted on 11-of-14 field goals and all 29 extra point attempts in his first season as the starting placekicker to merit status as a Lou Groza Award Semifinalist in 2011. He did not miss a kick until the Hurricanes’ seventh game of the year and was named Special Teams MVP. The New Lenox, Ill., native nailed a game-winning field goal as time expired to defeat USF on the road, while successfully connecting on a season-long 43-yard boot in a victory at North Carolina. Wieclaw, who also handled kickoffs, limited opponents to an 18.6 yard kick return average for the year. The 30 kickers on the Lou Groza Award Watch List, presented by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, were chosen based on statistics from the 2011 season and 2012 expectations. The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although he was an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker. Semifinalists for both awards will be named later in the season, with the winners announced on Dec. 6 during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Award Show, broadcast live from Orlando, Fla.

James Nominated to Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Tuesday that University of Miami senior running back Mike James has been named a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. As one of college football’s most prestigious off-the-field honors, the award recognizes a select group of college football players committed to making a difference in their communities. James has played in every game for the Hurricanes the past three seasons (38) and was named Miami’s 2011 Strength Training Athlete of the Year. The Haines City, Fla., native was second on the team with eight total touchdowns in 2011, and has reached the endzone 13 times in his career. James is working toward a degree in Sport Administration with a minor in Sociology. Since coming to Coral Gables in 2009, James has been involved with several community service groups and initiatives, including the Annual University of Miami Marrow Donor Drive, Empowered Youth, The Ronald McDonald House, The Miami Rescue Mission, Rushing the Community and Canes on Patrol. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing.

Allen Hurns Named to Biletnikoff Watch List

Wide receiver Allen Hurns has been included on the 2012 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List - given to the nation’s top receiver - as announced Tuesday by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. Hurns, a native of Carol City, Fla., had a breakout season as a sophomore recording 31 receptions for 415 yards, a 13.4 yard per reception average. His four touchdown catches on the season were second on the team to only Tommy Streeter (8) - the sixth round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. will announce the 10 Biletnikoff Award semifinalists on Nov. 12, 2012, following the vote by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee. Likewise, the three finalists will be declared, following another vote, on November 19, 2012. The Biletnikoff Award is presented annually to the nation’s outstanding college football receiver (the award defines receiver as any player who catches a pass) by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. (TQC). The TQC Foundation, Inc. is an independent, charitable organization that was founded in 1994. Present Chairman and Founding Trustee, Professor Walter W. Manley II, Founding Trustee L. Thomas Cox, Jr., Founding Trustee Rocky Bevis and Founding Trustee Bob Teel established the award and the TQC Foundation, Inc. that sponsors it. Many more trustees have contributed to its development as one of the most prominent awards in college football.

Canes Receive Votes in Preseason Poll, Win Two Exhibitions The University of Miami Hurricanes’ soccer team is receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division I Preseason Top 25, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday. Miami was one of 13 teams listed just outside the NSCAA’s initial Top 25. The Hurricanes won their first NCAA Championship game in program history with a double-sudden victory decision over visiting Alabama at Cobb Stadium during the 2011 postseason. The Atlantic Coast Conference was well-represented in the rankings, with nine of 11 teams making the cut. In addition to the Hurricanes, the ACC placed Duke (No. 2), Wake Forest (No. 3), Florida State (No. 4), Virginia (No. 7), North Carolina (No. 8), Boston College (No. 11), Maryland (No. 13) and Virginia Tech (No. 22) in the NSCAA’s initial Top 25. Based in Kansas City, Kan., the National Soccer Coaches Association of America is the largest soccer coaches’ organization in the world. The University of Miami women’s soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over homestading University of Dayton in the season-opening exhibition for both teams. Behind goals from Ali Brennan, Jasmine Paterson, Gina Maddi and Ashley Flinn, the Hurricanes overwhelmed the Flyers’ defense in the first exhibition. Miami dominated the run of play during the contest, maintaining its signature control of possession under head coach Tom Anagnost in Friday’s contest. The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead into halftime behind a goal from de- Kate Howarth fender Ali Brennan, while goals from Paterson, Maddi and Flinn sealed the deal in the later stages of the contest. The Miami Hurricanes capped off their weekend on the road with a second consecutive exhibition victory, taking down the homestanding Ohio State Buckeyes by a final score of 1-0. Freshman Jasmine Paterson continued her impressive start to the season, netting what proved to be the gamewinner in the 47th minute. On a long ball played into the box from sophomore defender Maddie Simms, Paterson capitalized with a shot off a deflection that made its way inside the far post from 15 yards out. Both Paterson and sophomore Ashley Flinn had multiple chances that either deflected wide or just missed. Miami outshot Ohio State 14-10, while Emily Lillard managed to keep the Buckeyes off the board with a clean sheet. The sophomore transfer made three saves over 90 minutes of work. Kennedy Enshrined into NFL Hall of Fame Former University of Miami AllAmerican Cortez Kennedy was officially enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. The induction ceremony was broadcast on both ESPN and the NFL Network. The defensive tackle is the fifth Hurricane to earn the honor, joining Jim Otto (1980), Ted Hendricks (1990), Jim Kelly (2002) and Michael Irvin (2007) in Canton. Kennedy registered 58 sacks and scored one touchdown on a fumble recovery in his 11-season career with the Seattle Seahawks. 2012 Non-Conference Men’s Hoops Schedule The University of Miami men’s basketball team officially released its 2012 non-conference schedule, highlighted by six contests at the BankUnited Center and five match-ups against teams that qualified for the 2012 postseason. The Hurricanes kick off their non-conference slate Nov. 2 with an exhibition game against St. Leo and conclude two months later with a home match-up against La Salle (Jan. 2). Other highlights include Michigan State’s visit for the annual ACC/Big 10 Challenge (Nov. 28) and the Hurricanes’ trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Diamond Head Classic (Dec. 22-25). “There are basically three components to your schedule - non-conference, the ACC regular season and ACC tournament. We always schedule very competitive non-conference opponents so that will help prepare us for the very, very rigorous ACC challenges that we’ll have ahead of us. This year’s non-conference schedule is particularly difficult, because of the number of teams that we will face that were in postseason play last year.” Miami opens its regular season campaign with a trio of in-state competitors: Stetson (Nov. 9), Florida Gulf Coast University (Nov. 13) and Jacksonville (Nov. 16). Detroit (Nov. 24) and Michigan State (Nov. 28), who both made the NCAA Tournament in 2012, will travel to Coral Gables for two highly anticipated match-ups in late November. The Spartans, who earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16, were ranked the No. 9 in ESPN.com’s preseason Top 25 poll. The Hurricanes will play at home only once in December, as five of the month’s six games take place outside Coral Gables. They will face UMass in Amherst, Mass., (Dec. 1). before a trip home and a showdown with UNC-Charlotte (Dec. 14). After their brief stay, the Canes will make the drive to Orlando, Fla., for a match-up with in-state rival UCF on Dec. 18.

Jim Larranaga and staff will spend the holidays in Hawaii for the annual Diamond Head Classic, which includes six teams that qualified for the postseason in 2012. The Hurricanes will face either Arizona or East Tennessee State (Dec. 23) following their opening day matchup with the University of Hawaii (Dec. 22). The Hurricanes will conclude the tournament on Christmas Day with possible matchups against San Diego St., Ole Miss, San Francisco or Indiana State (Dec. 25). The Hurricanes will wrap up their non-conference schedule Jan. 2 at home against LaSalle before opening up conference play on the road against Georgia Tech. “Even though we have 18 games now in the ACC, we wanted to really challenge ourselves in the nonconference and we feel like we’re going to do that,” said assistant coach Eric Konkol. “Each team brings a different element to our schedule, which will create a very strong RPI and balanced slate for us.” Click here for complete article.

The Captain’s Log: Eric Erickson

Eric Erickson

After being selected by the New York Yankees on Day Three of Major League Baseball’s 2012 First-Year Player Draft, one of the greatest to ever come through Coral Gables gives his parting thoughts on a brilliant career with the Miami Hurricanes. I honestly couldn’t believe how quickly our season ended - it was heartbreaking. We had enough talent on our team to make a good run in the postseason but we weren’t playing consistent baseball throughout the season, so I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. One great thing about college baseball is that there are natural changes made to the roster and to the attitude and approach to the game from year to year, and I’m sure the 2013 Hurricanes will be something very special. Just take the 2007 Hurricanes compared to the 2008 team as an example. Between 2007 and 2008, there weren’t many changes made to the roster, but the confidence level and the realization of what we were capable of doing became a huge factor in our performance. So there’s no need to panic, and I’m confident that Miami will own the state of Florida in baseball again soon. I’m always going to be a Miami Hurricane. I’ll never forget all of the wonderful relationships I made while I was at UM, or the obstacles I overcame. I’ll never forget what it was like to wear orange and green, and to represent the best school in the country. I’ll never forget pitching against Florida State in the World Series, and beating them. And I’ll never forget to thank God for leading me down I-75 from Sarasota to Miami and putting the University of Miami and everything that came along with it into my life. I’m forever grateful. The newest chapter of my life is happening in the New York Yankees organization. I’ve worked very hard to get here and know that this is where I belong. My dad grew up in Brooklyn, and when I was five years old he took me to my first baseball game in the Bronx to watch the Yankees and the Red Sox play. I remember everything, and I’ve been a Yankee fan ever since. In fact all of my childhood memories of baseball revolve around the New York Yankees. My dad would take me to card shows where former Yankee players would go to sign autographs, and we would wait in line to meet them and have them sign baseballs and photographs. I’ve met Whitey Ford, Phil Rizzuto and Yogi Berra just to name a few. I had Yankee wallpaper in my bedroom when I was a kid . It is absolutely amazing that the organization drafted me when I was coming out of high school, and have drafted me again six years later after all I’ve been through. Ever since I reported to camp in Tampa I’ve been walking around with a feeling that is too good to describe. I’m with my dream team, and the opportunities that are in front of me are things that I’ve been thinking about and dreaming about since I was five years old. The ultimate goal is to make it to the Major Leagues, but regardless of what happens, I am very blessed and am going to make the most of this opportunity. Go Canes! Go Yankees! “I want to thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankee.” –Joe Dimaggio -Easy E HurricaneSports.com • 17 • @HurricaneSports
