Canes Host Tennessee and Penn State to Highlight Non-Conference Schedule The University of Miami women’s basketball team will face Tennessee and Penn State at the BankUnited Center, highlighting the Hurricanes’ 2012-13 nonconference schedule released Monday. Miami’s non-conference schedule features only 11 games, due to the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule change from 16 to 18 contests. “Obviously, we have some great opponents on our schedule,” head coach Katie Meier said. “Playing in the postseason the last three years has elevated our program’s profile and allowed us to grab some great non-conference matchups.”
The Volunteers will return the trip the Hurricanes made to Knoxville last season in what will only be the second all-time meeting between the programs. “I expect to see a great crowd for our Tennessee matchup,” Meier said. “It’s a real treat for our South Florida community, and I am excited to see our fans fill up the BUC.” The Hurricanes’ current 40-game home win streak is the nation’s second-longest and will be put to the test in the season-opener against North Florida on Nov. 9. After their home game against Tennessee, the Canes will host their annual UM Thanksgiving Tournament from Nov. 23-24. Miami will welcome FAU, Southern Illinois and Radford to the BankUnited Center. Penn State will pay a visit to Coral Gables on Nov. 29 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Last season, the Nittany Lions finished with a 26-7 record, advancing to the Sweet 16 as a No. 4 seed, before falling to No. 1 seeded Connecticut. “Our meeting with Penn State is an incredible draw,” Meier said. “The Big Ten/ACC Challenge has a tremendous tradition and I believe we may have drawn the best team in that league.” Last season in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Miami defeated Michigan State, 76-60, in East Lansing, Mich. The non-conference schedule concludes with the annual UM Holiday Tournament, when Miami welcomes Central Connecticut, Delaware State and the Big Ten’s Wisconsin to the BankUnited Center from Dec. 28-29.

I committed to Miami because of the location and weather. Miami volleyball is hard working.
The best part of being on the team is the experience, because the friends you make on a team are different from any other friends you’ll make in life. If I had to describe the team in one word it would be crazy. Favorite Athlete: Brian Wilson Favorite Pro Sports Team: San Francisco Giants Favorite Olympic Event: Beach Volleyball Second Favorite Olympic Event: Diving Favorite Olympic Athlete: Kerri Walsh Favorite Movie: Bridesmaids Favorite TV Show: Parks and Recreation Favorite Food: Fruit Smoothies Favorite Song Right Now: “Springsteen” by Eric Church I started playing volleyball at age 9 My favorite memory playing volleyball is playing Florida State at home last year the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We didn’t think people would show up but it was so packed they had to start turning people away at the door. And we won. I enjoy playing the sport because it’s fun and competitive The farthest place from home I’ve been is Miami This summer I spent most of my time at home with my family or at my cabin in Lake Tahoe with my friends When I was little, I always wanted to be a professional soccer player The best places on campus are Starbucks or the pool The most influential people in my life are my mom and my sister If you walked into my bedroom, the first thing you would notice is how comfortable my bed looks If I were a superhero, my name would be Super Ryan and my power would be invisibility If I could eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would be salmon My favorite class at UM was Staged Combat I hate to admit it, but I love all the Real Housewives shows, especially Orange County If I could live anywhere in the world it would be either San Francisco or Southern California If I could play any other sport at UM, it would be diving A secret talent of mine is snowboarding My nicknames are Ryn or Ry After graduating I hope to work for the San Francisco Giants Be sure to follow UM volleyball on Twitter (@CanesVB) for the latest news on the squad. Grant Signs with Pro Team in Cyprus After three years spent competing in orange and green, Malcolm Grant will make the switch to purple and yellow this season with APOEL Nicosia B.C. of the Cypriot First Division A. “I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to continue my basketball career in Cyprus,” Grant said. “It’s what we all dream of growing up, and it’s what I’ve worked so hard for. I definitely don’t take it for granted.” Grant, whose 10.8 points per game ranked third on the team in 2011-12, has spoken with former Hurricanes Jack McClinton and Brian Asbury about life overseas. Though he knows international basketball has its fair share of nuances, Grant doesn’t foresee any overwhelming challenges in his personal transition from college student-athlete to the professional ranks. “I know it’s a lot more physical over there, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Grant said. “In the end, basketball is basketball, and I’m going to work my hardest to be successful.” The Brooklyn, N.Y. native was an outspoken leader during his three years in Coral Gables, lighting up the crowd with both his three-point shot and his signature ear-to-ear grin. Grant, who was selected to the All-ACC Third Team as a junior in 2010-11, transferred to Miami after spending his freshman season at Villanova. After talking to a former Wildcat teammate about playing in Cyprus, Grant says he’s more excited than nervous when it comes to moving abroad. “I can’t really be worried or concerned about [the transition], because you have to keep a positive mindset,” Grant said. “This is what it’s all about. I love meeting new people, talking, having fun.” After a rollercoaster year for Grant that included the passing of his brother and a near miss on an NCAA Tournament berth, the sharpshooter knows all about frustration. Regardless, Grant feels his final year spent in Coral Gables was anything but a disappointment. “Coach Larranaga taught us a lot in my last year here,” Grant said. “It’s not all about basketball. There’s a lot more to life than just that.” From what he’s heard about life in Miami compared to life in Cyprus, Grant seems further excited about beginning the next chapter. “Beautiful weather, beautiful people, delicious food,” Grant said with a laugh. “I just can’t wait to get it all started.”

Meier Led Team USA Wins Gold at FIBA Americas
Finding itself in unfamiliar territory, the 2012 USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team (5-0) never panicked and fought back from a double-digit deficit to claim the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship gold medal with a 71-47 victory over Brazil (4-1) on Sunday night in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. The gold medal marks the sixth straight for the United States at the U18s. Since its inception in 1988, the American women have now claimed seven gold medals (1988, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012) and two silver medals (1992, 1996) in nine tries, and are now 43-2 all-time at this event. Argentina (3-2) edged Canada (2-3) 53-49 in the bronze medal game. A trio of players posted double-doubles, while a total of four scored in double digits, including tournament MVP Breanna Stewart (Cicero-North H.S. / North Syracuse, N.Y.), who had 13 points and 10 boards and was the tournament’s second leading scorer (14.0 ppg.) and third leading rebounder (7.8 rpg). Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook H.S./ Bolingbrook, Ill.), who topped the tournament charts for scoring (17.8 ppg.) closed the night with a team-high 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds; while Bashaara Graves (Clarksville H.S. / Clarksville, Tenn.) finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Michaela Mabrey (Manasquan H.S. / Belmar, N.J.) rounded out the USA’s top scorers with 14 points. “Those three were workhorses down there,” said Katie Meier, USA U18 National Team and University of Miami head coach. “They just battled and battled and battled. When I say it was a physical game, it was an extremely physical game. So every time Bre (Stewart) or B (Bashaara Graves) or Morgan (Tuck) got a touch, it was well earned. They really had to even focus on a catch. They were getting swarmed. That’s what opened up Michael Mabrey and she just put us on her back there for awhile and brought us back into the game.” After trailing for just 1:44 combined in its first four games, and never by more than three points early in a contest, the U.S. found itself in the position of having to come from behind by double digits. Brazil came out on fire and the United States, which missed its first four shots, found itself on the wrong side of a 9-0 score. Stewart converted on a put-back at 6:15 to put the first points on the board for her side, but the USA continued struggling to score and by the end of the first stanza, trailed 16-7. In falling behind, the team, which shot 50.4 percent
from the floor in its first four games, missed its first four field goals and shot a very uncharacteristic 14.3 percent (2-14 FGs) in the first period. Thirty-eight seconds into the second period Brazil’s Thamara Silva De Frietas put her team up by double digits, 18-7. However, the North Americans did not panic. With shots not falling in the beginning, the U.S. instead turned to its bread and butter - stingy defense - and with the defensive heat turned up, the USA’s offense started clicking. Bashaara Graves knocked down a shot on an inbounds pass from Mabrey at 9:01, the first two of an eventual string of 19 unanswered points. Five players scored in the run, which saw Mabrey connect on a 3-pointer at 5:00 to knot the game at 18-apiece. Following a Brazil 24-second violation Graves hit one of two attempts from the line at 4:15 to give the U.S. its first lead of the game, 19-8, and the red, white and blue never again trailed. The run, which featured three 3-pointers from Mabrey in a 10-0 sequence, ended with a Tuck put-back at 1:50 and the USA’s lead stood at 26-18. Brazil finally ended its scoring drought with a 3-pointer from Estela Gregorio. After a traditional 3-point play from Stewart, Gregorio struck again from beyond the arc and at halftime the U.S. held a slim 29-24 margin. Coming out of the locker room fired up, the North Americans scored the first six points of the third quarter, but Brazil hit another three to remain close, 35-27, at 7:12. Countering with another mini-spurt of seven, including five from Mabrey, at 5:26 the USA finally had some breathing room, 42-27. After a Brazil bucket at 4:30, the U.S. continued its onslaught and outscored the South Americans 8-2 to close the third quarter up 50-31. The fourth quarter saw a few spurts from Brazil, but the USA punctuated the game with a 10-0 run en route to collecting gold. Stewart has now captured gold medals at the U17 and U19 FIBA World Championships and the U16 and U18 FIBA Americas Championships. In the end, the U.S. improved its shooting percentage to 40.6 (21-48 FGs) overall and made 31.3 percent (516 3pt FGs) from beyond the arc, while limiting Brazil, which hit for 41.7 percent (10-24 FGs) in the first half, to 31.5 percent (17-54 FGs) on the night. Further, the USA claimed 16 points off of 23 turnovers, but only gave up seven points from its 19 turnovers. The U.S. outscored Brazil 34-18 in the paint and 20-5 on second chance points and outrebounded Brazil 48-33. Jannah Tucker (New Town H.S. / Randallstown, Md.) went down with an injury to her left knee early in the USA’s Aug. 16 game and did not compete for the remainder of the tournament. In classification games, Mexico (1-4) picked up its first win after downing Dominican Republic (0-5) 64-33 to finish in seventh place, while host Puerto Rico (3-2) finished in fifth place with a 56-46 victory over Colombia (2-3). The Rules of the Game Dear Hurricane Fans, As we embark on another year of Hurricane Athletics, we want to say THANK YOU for your support and belief in our program. With our success comes a responsibility and commitment to conduct our business within the bounds of all NCAA regulations. You, as a “representative of athletics interests are equally responsible for that commitment. The NCAA has strictly limited the role that you, as a Hurricane fan, may take with regard to prospects and student-athletes. I invite you to take a look at this interesting and informative pamphlet highlighting some of the NCAA rules, and should you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact our Compliance Office at 305-284-2692. Thanks for your continued support and GO CANES!

The second annual University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (UMSHoF) Celebrity Dolphin Tournament had participation of nearly 60 boats and more than 60 former Hurricanes athletes, double the numbers from the inaugural tournament in 2011. More than $10,000 in cash and prizes were awarded to anglers in multiple categories, while the tournament raised funds for three non-profit organizations. The tournament was hosted by former Hurricanes defensive lineman and UMSHoF member Warren Sapp , who spent 13 years in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders. The tournament’s total attendance surpassed 350, with former UM athletes and supporters participating in the fishing activities and awards dinner, which featured a live auction led by Jay Rokeach, the longtime public address announcer for University of Miami athletic events. “The winners were not just those who reeled in the biggest fish, they were Shake-a-Leg Miami, Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys and the UMSHoF,” said K.C. Jones, president-elect of the UMSHoF and a 2008 hall inductee. “We raised money for important causes and brought together a group of elite sports celebrities and UM fans in the Florida Keys, an area that has always supported UM athletics. Plans for next year’s tournament are already underway. Before then, we will offer many opportunities for fans to participate in a full slate of UMSHoF activities.” Tournament Information - For information about future tournament participation, including boat entry or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.canesfish.com, send an email to info@canesfish.com or contact K.C.
