The Miami men’s basketball team won four games in Spain in August as part of an overseas educational and competitive tour.

In the 64th minute against No. 23 UCF, goalkeeper Emily Lillard took her normal spot for a free kick near half field. The senior’s drive from distance was mishandled, resulting in what Lillard said was her first goal since high school.

An estimated crowd of more than 6,000 fans celebrated the start of football season at the Schwartz Center for CanesFest14.

Soccer Opens Home Schedule Friday With FGCU

The Miami Hurricanes soccer team will open its home schedule Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against FGCU at Cobb Stadium. The Hurricanes opened their fall last weekend with a challenging duo of road matches, falling to No. 5 Florida (3-0) and No. 23 UCF (2-1). Head coach Mary-Frances Monroe is looking to change momentum in a hurry, beginning with four home matches over the next 10 days: FGCU, Jacksonville (Sept. 2), Stetson (Sept. 5) and FAU (Sept. 7). Miami has reason to be optimistic, however. The Hurricanes have not lost to FGCU in three previous matchups, and defeated both Jacksonville (3-2 OT) and FAU (2-1) last season. Monroe said her team progressed through its first two matches, but is looking for a 90-minute performance against the Eagles. Need more reason for optimism? Under Monroe’s direction in 2013, Miami finished its nonconference schedule with a perfect 5-0-0 record and an impressive 6-2-1 home record. Despite the two losses, senior goalkeeper Emily Lillard has been a bright spot for the Hurricanes. The Kansas native has posted 12 saves through the first two games - tied for most of any player in the ACC - and came through with an unlikely goal to cut into UCF’s lead in the second half of an eventual defeat. With the ball lined up just past the half line in the 64th minute, Lillard lined up from her usual spot to deliver service into the box. Instead, the ball slipped through the hands of charging UCF keeper Connie Organ and into the back of the net. “It’s nice, but my responsibility this season is to keep everything out of the net because I believe we can be a special team,” Lillard said of her goal. “Scoring is definitely the last thing on my mind, but getting one, it’s very cool.” After being held to just Lillard’s highlight strike through its first two matches, the Hurricanes will look to jumpstart offensive standout Ronnie Johnson - who has served as one of Monroe’s top targets in front. Flanking Johnson have been Natalie Moik and Cortney O’Connell, who have both impressed in the early going. Grace Rapp is another newcomer who has shown positive signs through the first two matches of her Hurricanes career. Admission to Friday’s opener is free to all students and fans.

@CanesVB Ready for Hurricane Invitational

The University of Miami volleyball team is set to open its 2014 season with this weekend’s Hurricane Invitational. The Canes will host Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A&M and Seton Hall in a tournament that will feature six matches played over two days. “Opening day is great,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “After training and preparing for a few weeks, it’s exciting to start the season.” The Canes open their season at 7 p.m. on Friday, hosting Seton Hall. Miami returns to action on Saturday for a pair of matches, facing Florida A&M at noon and Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. “Playing at home is huge for us, especially with so many new players,” Gandara said. “We don’t have to travel, we get an extra day of training and we get to play in front of our fans. We are excited and ready to compete this weekend. It should be a great tournament.” Senior captains Savanah Leaf and Emani Sims are expected to lead the Canes in 2014. The gifted duo was among the 19 studentathletes named Preseason All-ACC on Tuesday. Leaf and Sims are two of the seven returners from the 2013 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. “After going back and looking at things we needed to fix from the Orange & Green Scrimmage, it will be fun competing against new faces and seeing how things unfold,” Sims said. Along with Leaf and Sims, seniors Blair Fuentez and Alexis Mourning are joined by juniors Caitilin Donahoe and Misty Ma’a as well as sophomore Kelsie Groot are back from the 2013 team and they will provide leadership and experience as Miami looks to return to the NCAA Tournament in 2014. Kyrena Dudley, Sylvia Hernandez, Michele Marenus, Brooke McDermott, Taylor Scott, Sakile Simmons, Haley Templeton and Kalysta White make up the 2014 Miami volleyball incoming class. The eight newest Canes will don the orange and green for the first time on Friday night. For all the latest information on Miami Hurricanes volleyball, follow the official Twitter feed, @CanesVB.

Perryman Proud to Represent The U, Gables

The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Over the course of the 2014 season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is on Coral Gables native Denzel Perryman. Few are prouder to be Miami Hurricanes more than Denzel Perryman. The Coral Gables, Fla., native cannot help but smile whenever he talks about his school and its football team. One of the most powerful hitters in college football, Perryman is a fierce competitor and a true leader of the Hurricane defense. But watch him take off his helmet on the sideline after a big play to stop an opponent and you’re sure to see a big grin followed by encouraging words for his fellow defenders. An All-America honorable mention selection by SI.com, Perryman started all 13 games at outside linebacker in 2013. The 6-foot, 242-lb. linebacker led the team with 108 total tackles, including 69 solo stops, and had six games with 10+ tackles. His stellar play was recognized across the league and the country, as Perryman was tabbed a first-team All-ACC selection by ACSMA and the ACC head coaches. He was a second-team All-ACC choice by Athlon Sports and an All-ACC selection by The Sporting News. Perryman also was named the 2013 Defensive MVP and earned the 2013 Hard Hitter Award at the Hurricanes’ postseason awards banquet. While he is an outstanding player week in and week out, Perryman has a propensity for playing his best in big games. He tallied 13 tackles and a forced fumble in Miami’s 21-16 win over No. 12/9 Florida on Sept. 6, 2013, earning ACC Linebacker of the Week for his huge performance against the Gators. Perryman also recorded a game-high 11 tackles in a win over Georgia Tech and collected 12 tackles in Miami’s come-from-behind road win at North Carolina—seven of which came in first half. The star linebacker led the Canes with 11 tackles and a tackle for loss at Florida State and he recorded a career-high 15 tackles - including 10 solo stops - and 1.5 sacks against Virginia Tech. The senior will lead the Canes defense against a familiar opponent on Sept. 1. Miami opens with Louisville in the Cardinals’ first game since joining the ACC in July. The two teams squared off in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28, 2013, with Perryman recorded four solo tackles in the game. Perryman, who hails from Coral Gables High School – the same high school that produced linebacker Jonathan Vilma, running back Frank Gore and linebacker Darryl Sharpton - will look to step up in the big game like he has so many times before and lead the Hurricanes in their season opener.

Brad Kaaya Named QB Uniforms Hurricanes Unveil Starting 2014 Football

Following Sunday’s practice on the Greentree Practice Fields, Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden announced Brad Kaaya as the starting quarterback for the 2014 season. “I think the biggest thing was we saw how much he was devoted to it, how many sacrifices he made, how well he learned and how it translated to the field,” Golden said. “A guy can be good in the film room or out of the book, and then it doesn’t translate. It has translated here.” After watching Kaaya battle with senior Jake Heaps, redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen and freshman Malik Rosier over the previous three weeks, Golden decided on a starting quarterback Sunday morning and informed the players of his decision prior to practice. “It was a tight battle,” Golden said. “It was a battle that none of us could have foresaw at the end of June or July or the beginning of camp. I’m excited about that position. In Ryan’s absence, those two had a great battle. I think Kevin Olsen really improved, so I am excited about him. Right now, Brad nudged out Jake and he’s our quarterback.” Just two days before his 19th birthday, Kaaya will be under center as the Canes face Louisville in the season opener on Sept. 1. “We’ve put him in very tough situations. We’ve put him under the gun,” Golden said. “His completion percentage is really good. He’s protected the ball really well. He can articulate the offense. He is very poised. “As I told him, he’s our quarterback. He’s not our true freshman quarterback. He’s the University of Miami quarterback.” Jacory Harris was the last true freshman to start a season opener at Miami, throwing for 190 yards and a touchdown in a 52-7 victory over Charleston Southern on Aug. 28, 2008. Stephen Morris was the last true freshman to start a game at quarterback for the Hurricanes, throwing for 186 yards and a touchdown against Maryland on Nov. 6, 2010. “He’s come along great,” Golden said of Kaaya. “He’s done a great job and really maturing. We are putting him in a tough environment every day…We don’t have our whole offense in for the opener yet, so he will improve by leaps and bounds over the next few days.” Kaaya enrolled at Miami in May and Golden believes his early arrival helped the 18-year-old prove himself on and off the field. “If he wasn’t here for 13 weeks before preseason camp plus three now, I don’t think we would be having this conversation,” Golden said. “That combined with the fact that he made incredible sacrifices personally, and he’s smart, and he’s disciplined. He is one of those guys that got better incrementally every day so here we are.” A standout at Chaminade College Prep in West Hills, Calif., Kaaya played in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. He was a first-team California Division II All-State selection and was named to 2013 Los Angeles Daily News All-Area team. Kaaya was also named Los Angeles Daily News AllArea Player of the Year. He compiled a 23-3 record as the starter at Chaminade, finishing his career with 5,730 yards and 40 touchdowns in two seasons. He led Chaminade to the California Division II State Championship in 2013, throwing for a school-record 3,855 yards and 27 touchdowns as senior. A limited supply of lower-level season tickets are still available for as little as $215. The 2014 home schedule features seven games, including Homecoming on November 1 vs. North Carolina and a matchup with in-state rival Florida State on November 15.

ACC Announces 2015 Men’s Hoops Schedule

The University of Miami opens it 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference schedule against reigning league champion Virginia on Jan. 3 in Coral Gables, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced. In the 2014-15 campaign, Miami will host three Atlantic Coast Conference opponents that finished in the Top 25 in 2014, including preseason No. 7 North Carolina (Feb. 28), league newcomer No. 10 Louisville (Feb. 3) and No. 12 Virginia (Jan. 3). The Canes will travel to preseason No. 2 Duke (Jan. 13) and No. 21 Pittsburgh (March 4). “The ACC in my mind is the best basketball conference in the country. Every night you are playing against a Top 20 or Top 10 team in the country,” said Larrañaga. “Whether you are at home or on the road, you had better be at your best, or you will be defeated.” Miami will play eight games on the ESPN body of networks (ESPN, ESPN2 & ESPNU), one game on CBS, three on the ACC Network and six will be aired on the ACC’s regional sports network (RSN), which consists Fox Sports South, Fox Sports Carolinas, Fox Sports Florida, Sun Sports, Fox Sports Indiana, Fox Sports Midwest, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic, NESN, YES Network, MSG Network and ROOT Sports. “We have such a demanding non-conference schedule because of the number of games we are going to play in such a short period of time. We are going to find out right away how well prepared we are for the ACC,” added Larrañaga. “This is going to be a very challenging team with nine new players. They are going to be asked to bond and play well together very very quickly. That’s why the trip to Spain was so important to us.” The Canes start the conference season with two at home and two on the road, as UM hosts Virginia Jan. 3 on ESPN 2 and Boston College (Jan. 10), then hits the road for a pair of ESPN or ESPN2 televised matchups against Duke (Jan. 13) and Notre Dame (Jan. 17). Following a home outing against NC State on Jan. 22, Miami travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to face the Orange on Jan. 24, a game that will be on ESPN or ESPN2. Miami wraps up the month with a home matchup with Georgia Tech on Jan. 28. The Canes play nine games in February, five of which are at the BankUnited Center. UM opens the second month at Florida State on Feb. 1, then is in Coral Gables Feb. 3 and Feb. 8 to face Louisville and Clemson, respectively. Miami’s next three of four games are on the road as the Canes go to Wake Forest (Feb. 11) and Boston College (Feb. 15), are home for Virginia Tech (Feb. 18), then travel to Louisville Feb. 21, for an ESPN or ESPN2 game. The Canes conclude the home portion of the schedule with home matchups against Florida State (Feb. 25) and North Carolina (Feb. 28). Miami’s two games in March are on the road, as the Canes play at Pittsburgh (March 4) and at Virginia Tech (March 7). The ACC Tournament will be held at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum March 10-14.

Sun Life Stadium Modernization Plan Approved

Alain Poupart, Lead Writer, Dolphins.com The modernization of Sun Life Stadium is ready to move ahead. The Miami-Dade County Commission on Tuesday approved Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s plan for bonus payments to the Miami Dolphins for hosting marquee events in exchange for Dolphins owner Stephen Ross being financially responsible for the $350 million renovation of the stadium without county assistance. “I want to thank the Board of County Commissioners and Mayor Gimenez for approving this unique and creative plan to bring Super Bowls and other marquee events to Miami-Dade County,” Ross said in a statement. “We have one of the world’s most aspirational cities and, as such, deserve a stadium that will provide significant economic impact to Miami-Dade County. This will not only secure the future of the Dolphins, but will ensure that Miami has one of the world’s best venues to host events of this magnitude going forward.” The resolution, which was co-sponsored by District Commissioner Barbara Jordan, was approved around 1 p.m. Tuesday after approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of discussion. “I”m just excited that we can break ground and get started on creating a world-class facility for a world-class community,” said Dolphins President/CEO Tom Garfinkel. “Now the hard work really begins. We’ve got to get the renovation plans finalized, start construction and get it done.” Garfinkel spoke before the county commission and the Dolphins delegation in downtown Miami included Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Larry Little, along with former Dolphins greats Jason Taylor, Dick Anderson and Nat Moore. Taylor said it was important for former players to show their support. “We are the Miami Dolphins,” Taylor said. “All the former players, guys that live in this community still and make this home, we are the Miami Dolphins. It’s not just an owner or the players or the staff, it’s all of us included and it’s important for us to come out and support and do what we can to help. There’s plenty of politicians and lobbyists and all that that do the dirty work. We lend a hand where we can.” As Marino pointed out, he played in the first-ever game at Sun Life Stadium back in the 1987 preseason, and he’s thrilled it’s about to get a facelift. “I think it’s great for the community,” Marino said after the vote. “I’m a Dophins fan. It’s part of my life, playing there so many years. I’m excited that it’s going to be around and get a new look.” With the agreement with Miami-Dade County in place, Garfinkel said the Dolphins intend on bidding next spring for the next available Super Bowl, SB LIII to crown a champion in the 2018 season. “That was part of the intent of trying to get it done,” Garfinkel said. “We want to bring in as many marquee events as we can as soon as we can. “Now the hard work really begins. We’ve got to get the modernization plans finalized, start construction and get it done.” Garfinkel said the modernization of the stadium would be done in two stages and construction could begin within a few weeks. The goal is to have all of the work done before the start of the 2016 season. The new deal was reached under what was termed a Performance-Based Marquee Event Grant Agreement. The agreement, which is designed to help bring marquee events such as Super Bowls, college football championships, college football semifinals, World Cup soccer matches as well as other international soccer events, is for a period of 20 years.

Canes Complete the Four-Game Sweep in Spain

The University of Miami men’s basketball team completed a four-game sweep in Spain, defeating AEC Collblanc Torrassa, 116-64, in Barcelona to wrap up the overseas tour. In four games in Spain, Miami outscored its opponent 89.8 to 65.8 ppg and pulled down nearly twice as many rebounds, 51.8 to 27.0 per night. The Canes hit 51.8 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from three and 62.4 percent at the line. UM also averaged 17.8 assists and 13.3 steals per night. Individually, four Canes averaged double digits, led by McClellan (20.0), followed by Burnett (14.3), Newton (13.5) and Palmer (11.5). Cruz Uceda averaged 11.0 rebounds per game while Jekiri averaged 8.5 rpg. Game 1: The University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated Eurocolegio Casvi, 79-68, August 15 in the Hurricanes’ first game of their educational and competitive tour of Spain. Junior Sheldon McClellan and freshman Ja’Quan Newton posted team-high points with 17 apiece. Madrid native Ivan Cruz Uceda pulled down 17 rebounds, 14 in the first half, and added five points, two steals and an assist for the Canes. McClellan added eight rebounds, two assists and a steal while Newton notched three rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists. Redshirt freshman Deandre Burnett added 10 points while rookie James Palmer recorded 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. The game, which the Canes led from start to finish, was played in four 12-minute quarters, and using FIBA rules, with a deeper 3-point line and wider lane, to name a few of the changes. The projected attendance was 275, with 50 percent Miami fans, 30 percent fans of Cruz Uceda’s and the rest just cheering for basketball. Game 2: The University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated Albacete Baloncesto 77-66 in Albacete, Spain, as part of the Hurricanes’ educational and competitive overseas tour. Sheldon McClellan led the Hurricanes with 24 points, five steals, three rebounds and a pair of assists. McClellan notched 11 points in the fourth quarter alone, including a pair of 3-pointers and an emphatic dunk in the final few minutes to seal the victory for the Canes. Spaniard Ivan Cruz Uceda continued to crash the boards, pulling down 13 rebounds, including eight on the defensive end. He added eight points, and a pair of steals, blocks and assists. After falling behind 8-6, the Hurricanes tied the game at eight, then took the lead for good when Deandre Burnett gave Miami the 15-13 edge by hitting a shot from long distance. Albacete gave Miami a scare when they brought the game within one, 53-52 at the end of the third quarter. A pair of 3-pointers from McClellan and one from James Palmer helped stretch the lead to 77-63 with 40 seconds left in the game. Miami notched 17 assists on 33 made shots, blocked seven Albacete shots, recorded 18 steals and forced 21 turnovers. The Canes outrebounded the Spanish squad 47-24 Game 3: The University of Miami men’s basketball team continued its winning ways in Spain with an 86-64 victory over CB Quart in Banyoles. Four Hurricanes scored in double digits, led by Sheldon McClellan’s 16 points. Deandre Burnett added 15 points while Davon Reed and Ja’Quan Newton added 13 apiece. On the boards, Reed pulled down a team-high eight, as McClellan and Tonye Jekiri each had six. James Palmer notched five assists, added to four from Manu Lecomte and three from Burnett. The Canes hit a Spain-best 65.3 percent (32-49) from the field and 72.0 (18-25) from the free throw line. Miami recorded 18 assists on their 32 made shots, the most assists in a game this trip. Deandre Burnett started the game by knocking down a 3-pointer, but the Canes quickly fell behind, 9-3. Just five minutes into the game, the Canes tied the score at 16 when Newton converted a 3-point play with a bucket and free throw. After back-and-forth leads, Miami led 21-29 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Walk on freshman Chris Stowell saw his first gametime action on the trip, attempting one 3-pointer in his three minutes on the floor. Game 4: Deandre Burnett and Sheldon McClellan each notched a team-high 23 points in the win, closely followed by 22 from Ja’Quan Newton and 18 from James Palmer. Manu Lecomte totaled six assists while McClellan added five steals. Tonye Jekiri led the war on the boards with 12 rebounds, while Ivan Cruz Uceda notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Miami hit the first bucket of the game, followed by a free throw from AEC, but the Canes took off on a 17-0 run to put the game away early. Miami led 33-11 after the first quarter, and 56-25 at the half.

UM, Morris Agree to Three-Year Extension

The University of Miami and head baseball coach Jim Morris have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension that will run through the 2018 baseball season. At the conclusion of the contract, longtime assistant coach Gino DiMare will assume the reigns of one of the premier baseball programs in college athletics. Morris, who has been at the helm of the Hurricanes program since November 1993, led Miami to its second ACC Regular Season Championship in program history this past spring. Among the most successful head coaches in college baseball history, Morris has guided Miami to over 900 wins in his 21 seasons in Coral Gables. “We are ecstatic that Coach Morris has agreed to remain at the helm through the 2018 season,” said Director of Athletics Blake James. “What Jim has built at Miami is unprecedented, and the success speaks for itself. This extension is well earned.” DiMare is entering his 16th season as an assistant at Miami, following a stellar playing career at UM and a professional career with the Boston Red Sox organization. DiMare has been instrumental in the Canes success, overseeing recruiting and serving as the hitting coach for many years. “Gino possesses all of the ingredients of successful head coaches,” James said. “I have no doubt that he will continue to bring conference and national championships to Coral Gables. As Jim leads our program through 2018, we have a plan in place for a smooth transition and continued excellence, and I couldn’t be happier that Gino will be our next head baseball coach.” “Coach Morris has been a tremendous leader for our baseball program for many years and I will be honored to serve with him for another four,” DiMare said. “I am profoundly humbled by the opportunity to take over such a storied program from a legend, and I am confident that we will continue the proud Miami baseball tradition.” Morris has led Miami to 21 straight appearances in the NCAA postseason and 11 trips to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The Hurricanes’ college-baseball record 42 straight postseason appearances is the longest active streak for any Division I sports program nationwide. Morris, who ranks fourth among active Division I coaches in career victories, has been named National Coach of the Year on three occasions. Including his time at Georgia Tech, Morris ranks eighth all-time in Division I victories. “I am humbled and honored to continue to serve the University for four more years,” Morris said. “We have had an outstanding run but there is more work to be done and more championships to be won. I want to thank President Shalala and Blake James for their belief in what we are doing and I am excited for Gino to get this opportunity.”

Canes in Spain

The Hurricanes flew in to Madrid, toured the city, then attended a UM alumni event at the Hotel Emperador on the first evening abroad. After a tour of Toledo on Thursday, the team toured the Royal Palace then won the first game, vs. Eurocolegio Casvi on Friday. The team traveled to Valencia on Saturday, then got back to competition with a game against Albacete Baloncesto on Sunday. Monday brought more travel with a drive to Barcelona. On Tuesday, the team toured Montjuic Hill and Olympic Stadium, then Wednesday, the Canes faced CB Quart in game three of the trip. The team wrapped up the overseas excursion with its final game against AEC Collblanc Torrassa, then flew back to Miami on August 22. The Canes’ four games were played by FIBA rules (www.fiba.com), which have a few differences from NCAA rules. Games in Spain were four 10-minute periods instead of two 20-minute halves, and used a 24-second shot clock. The lane was 16-feet wide, compared to the NCAA’s 12 feet, and the 3-point line was 22-feet, 1.7 inches, compared to the team’s usual 20-feet, nine inches.

UMSHoF holds 25th Anniversary Celebration

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame marked the 25th Anniversary of the Grand Opening of the Tom Kearns Sports Hall of Fame Building with a reception on Monday, August 25th attended by UM President Donna Shalala, Athletic Director Blake James and Sebastian the Ibis, along with more than two dozen UMSHoF members and 12 UM head coaches among the nearly 200 guests. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to “usher in the next 25 years for the UM Sports Hall of Fame,” said UMSHoF Executive Director John Routh. Participating in the ceremony were Judge John Gale, instrumental in the founding of the Hall, President Shalala, AD Blake James, UMSHoF President KC Jones, past president Larry Wilson and 2014 inductee Wyllesheia Myrick, who represented all the past Hall of Fame inductees. The evening featured check presentations from UMSHoF President KC Jones to Jack Niedbalski of Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys and to Marc Buoniconti of the Buoniconti Fund, donations from the proceeds of the 4th Annual UMSHoF Celebrity Dolphin Tournament. In addition, UMSHoF President-Elect and Bowling Chairman Gerard Loisel presented a check to Mr. Buoniconti from the proceeds of the 4th Annual UMSHoF Celebrity Bowling Tournament. Tom Kearns, a UMSHoF member as a football star of the early 1940’s, was the major benefactor for the construction of the building, which was named in his honor. Mr. Kearns bestowed the generous gift because of his strong desire to preserve the memory of his fellow student-athletes who laid the foundation for the present and future of UM athletics. “To let all that tradition go down the drain would be a terrible thing,” said Mr. Kearns at the dedication of the building. “In another 30 years, all those artifacts would have been gone. If we didn’t build a Hall of Fame, those people might long be forgotten.” Mr. Kearns was a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees and Iron Arrow, the University’s highest honor, and was inducted into the UMSHoF in 1970. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 88. The building, located next to the Hecht Athletic Center on the Coral Gables campus, houses thousands of artifacts and memorabilia from more than 85 years of Hurricanes athletics, and is open free to the public from Noon to 5 p.m. weekdays. Only 282 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators have been honored by induction into the UM Sports Hall of Fame. Each year, the Hall holds its annual induction banquet in the spring, along with the newer events, the fishing tournament in June, the bowling tournament in February, and a golf tournament to raise funds for its operations, and to donate to local charities. The 22nd Annual UMSHoF Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, October 10 at the beautiful Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.
