From the Director of Athletics Hurricane Fans, With the 2015-16 academic year underway, I could not be more proud of the early season successes of our fall sport programs. The hard work, dedication and sacrifice that our student-athletes put in during the offseason and preseason has clearly paid off. Our volleyball team is coming off a 2-0 weekend at the LSU Tournament where it tallied wins over LSU and nationally-ranked Purdue, while our soccer team is in the midst of a three-game winning streak, heading into its ACC opener against Wake Forest. As we move into the third week of September, our football program is 2-0 heading into a big game this weekend against the University of Nebraska. There is so much history in the Miami-Nebraska matchup. On four separate occasions, the teams have played for the National Championship with our Hurricanes winning three. I know the atmosphere inside Sun Life Stadium will be truly electric when our team welcomes one of college football’s premier programs. Prior to kickoff, Kenny Calhoun ’83, Darrin Smith ’91 and Jerome McDougle ’01 – all members from those national championship victories over Nebraska—will serve as honorary captains. We look forward to having all three back at The U! Because we expect a large crowd on Saturday for the 3:30 pm kickoff, we are opening the tailgate lots at 10:30 a.m., an hour earlier than normal. I encourage all of our fans to arrive early, be loud and to wear orange. Season tickets to the 2015 Miami Hurricanes football season start for as low as $140 – visit CanesTix.com or call (305) 2842263 for more information. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, @MiamiHurricanes, or visit our web site at HurricaneSports.com. I hope you enjoy this week’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to a strong finish to an already exciting month. Go Canes! Blake James

@CanesVB Ready for FIU/Miami Challenge
The University of Miami volleyball team will close out the non-conference portion of its 2015 schedule this week with the FIU/Miami Challenge. The Hurricanes will play two matches in their final weekend before ACC play, hosting Seattle University at 7 pm on Thursday and UCF at 7 PM on Friday. Both matches will be played at the James L. Knight Sports Complex and admission is free. Miami enters this weekend’s action off an impressive showing in a tournament at LSU a week ago, going 2-0 with wins over No. 20 Purdue and the host LSU Tigers. The victory over Purdue was Miami’s first win over a ranked team since beating No. 12 North Carolina in five sets on Nov. 3, 2013. The win over the 20th-ranked Boilermakers was also the program’s first win over a ranked opponent away from Coral Gables since Miami beat No. 15 Wisconsin in four sets in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Dec 7, 2002. Three Hurricanes earned All-Tournament honors in Baton Rouge: Taylor Scott, Alexis Mourning and Kalysta White. Scott was also named the tournament’s MVP and added another accolade when she was selected as the ACC Player of the Week on Sept. 14. The senior earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her Miami career and she the first Hurricane to win an ACC weekly award in 2015. Scott, who ranks third on the team in kills, digs and service aces, is playing some of her best volleyball lately. The senior outside hitter recorded 14 kills and a career-high 22 digs, adding four blocks and a service ace in Miami’s win over No. 20 Purdue. A day later, she recorded a double-double in the victory over LSU. Mourning has been one of the top middle blockers in the conference, earning a pair of all-tournament selections and ranking fifth in the ACC with a .435 hitting percentage. She also leads the Canes with 35 total blocks on the season. White has also made an impact as Miami’s libero, tallying a teamhigh 118 digs. Sophomore Olga Strantzali has been a force for the Hurricanes offensively, leading the team with 115 kills and 16 service aces. She ranks ninth in the ACC with 3.48 kills/set and third in the conference with 0.48 service aces/set. She is also tied with Kelsie Groot for the team lead with four doubledoubles. Groot has been a steady contributor for Miami, ranking second on the team with 86 kills and fourth with 69 digs. The Canes have also received a boost from freshman Lucia Pampana, who has tallied 17 blocks over the previous four matches. Sophomore Haley Templeton is charged with keeping Miami’s attack moving. The setter ranks third in the ACC with 10.06 assists/set, tallying 332 assists over Miami’s first eight matches. Templeton is also dangerous with her serves, ranking second on the Canes with 10 aces. The Canes also feature a talented and versatile bench that includes a mix of experienced players like sophomore middle blocker Sakile Simmons, senior setter Caitilin Donahoe and sophomore defensive specialists Michele Marenus and Sylvia Hernandez talented freshmen Anna Haak, Kolby Bird and Codi Lee as players who have contributed for the Hurricanes so far in 2015. This weekend’s matches will be broadcasted on ESPN3. Bush Named To Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
University of Miami senior safety Deon Bush was named to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, the most esteemed off-the-field honor in college football. Bush is one of 22 student-athletes that have been selected for this honor. The Miami, Fla., native received the honor thanks to the significant contributions he makes to his community off the field. In his spare time, Bush has served as one of the team leaders in organizing the Be The Match Bone Marrow Drive. During the past four years of volunteer work with the Be The Match Bone Marrow Drive, Bush has helped add over 500 donors to the National Registry. He currently serves as a representative from the football team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a regular visitor to local nursing homes and elementary schools within the South Florida community. Last December, while the Hurricanes traveled to the Duck Commander Independence Bowl, Bush served food to the homeless at the Providence House in Shreveport, La. He also displayed a memorable act of kindness as he used his own per diem money during the bowl game to purchase Christmas gifts for under privileged youth. In its 24th year, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is comprised of athletes who have used their limited free time to perform inspirational acts of service. This summer, the program received an all-time record high 197 nominations from colleges and universities across the country. Nutrition Center Opens for Student-Athletes
The wave of athletics facilities upgrades and additions continued at the University of Miami Tuesday with the opening of the Hurricanes’ nutrition center inside the Hecht Athletic Center on campus. The center, which features a “grab-and-go” set-up for student-athletes to refuel before and after practice or on their way to class and which offers a bevy of food and drink options, including smoothies, sports drinks, yogurt, salads, sandwiches and fruit, is located on the second floor of the Hecht Center in the former student-athlete lounge space. “We are committed to helping our student-athletes become the very best that they can be, and the opening of the nutrition center is another resource to help them in their pursuit of excellence,” Athletics Director Blake James said. Sports dietician Alyson Marquez will direct the education aspect of the nutrition center which will be open to student-athletes from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm each weekday. “Sports nutrition is a big part of the student-athlete’s toolkit,” Marquez said. “Proper nutrition can elevate an athlete from great to excellent. Whether they are coming in pre-training or post-training, they can really maximize their performance and enhance it with good sports nutrition.” Shannon McCarthy, a captain on the women’s soccer team, stopped by to check out the newest addition inside the Hecht Athletic Center. “I think the nutrition center is extremely beneficial,” McCarthy said. “The life of a student-athlete is on-the-go every day, so for us to have healthy options readily available when we need them is great.”

Russell Competes in Final US Open, Retires
Former University of Miami Hurricane and professional tennis player Michael Russell competed in his final US Open this weekend, then retired from the sport after 17 years on tour. “To be able to travel the world, experience cultures, meet my wife through tennis, play as long as I did and come back from career-threatening injuries is just incredible,” Russell said at the US Open this weekend. “The sport is in my soul. I’d love to stay in the game and help future American players. You’ll probably see me a lot.” Appearing in the main draw at the US Open for the 10th year, Russell and his teammate Donald Young won a pair of matches at this year’s event, the first time Russell reached the third round of a Grand Slam since 2001. A third-round loss to Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey ended the run for “Iron Mike,” who was one of the most well-liked and respected players on tour. The 37-year-old Russell is currently ranked No. 425 in the world in singles, although he has been as high as No. 60, in 2007. In doubles, he is ranked No. 519, with a career-high ranking of No. 164 in 2012. “Michael Russell was the ultimate tennis competitor,” said Miami coach Mario Rincon. “He was an inspiration to junior and college players, and was admired on the pro tour by his peers for almost two decades. We are proud of him at The U.” After turning pro in 1998, he played on the Challenger circuit, winning 15 ITF and USTA Pro Circuit singles titles. He has won 77 matches in his career, and played past the first round in five Grand Slam singles events and twice in doubles. Russell said farewell on Twitter Wednesday, stating, “A genuine, heartfelt thank you to my family, friends & fans for an incredible 17 year career #forevergrateful.” Born on Jan. 5, 1978 in Detroit, Russell came to the University of Miami as the No. 1 ranked junior tennis player in the United States. As a high-school student, Russell was a member of the USTA National Tennis Team and competed in Junior Wimbledon, French Junior Open, Australian Junior Open and Italian Junior Open. During his All-American freshman season, Russell set the UM singles season record with a 39-8 (.830) mark including a 23-2 (.920) record in tournament play. In addition to his singles season record, Russell posted a 21-11 doubles record. His 21 doubles victories makes him one of only 22 UM players who have surpassed the 20-victory threshold. During his record-setting season, Russell recorded 22 consecutive tournament victories, including victories at Penn Conference Classic, Rolex Eastern Regional Championship and Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championship. Russell finished the 1996-97 season ranked as the No. 7 collegiate player in the country, after being ranked as high as No. 3 during the season. Due to his outstanding freshman campaign, he was one of 10 men’s players named to the 1997 Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team, selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and Tennis Magazine, and was selected as the ITA Region I Rookie Player of the Year. Russell was also named BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after leading the Hurricanes to an upset win over No. 13 Notre Dame in the championship to earn the Hurricanes’ fourth BIG EAST title in five seasons. Russell did not lose a match, singles (2-0) or doubles (3-0) in the entire tournament. The summer prior to Russell becoming a professional, he was on the USTA All-American Summer Team, an elite training program for top college players. As a member, he won circuit events in Waco, Texas, Tulsa, Okla., Lafayette, La., and Dallas to claim second place in the points race in mid-July.

Get To Know U: Mulloy Manning Get to Know U is a series that introduces the members of the Miami Hurricanes cross country program. The first edition of cross country’s Get To Know U focuses on sophomore Mulloy Manning, a Chemistry and French double maor from Southern Pines, N.C. Q: What has been your favorite part of being a Hurricane? A: The school spirit here is unbelievable. Before coming to UM I had never been in such a positive environment. Q: What are you most excited for about being in college? A: I love all the opportunities we have as college students, but especially Miami Hurricanes; being able to explore academically in such a diverse city is an unparalleled experience that only lasts these four years. I’m excited to absorb as much as I can! Q: How does running in college differ from running in high school? A: The level of competition is much higher, and so are the expectations. Q: What did your weekly mileage get up to at the high point? A: My highest weeks have been around 50-55 miles. Q: Tell me how you got started in the sport and whether you excelled right away or if it was a more gradual process of getting to a high level? A: I started running in middle school, and it’s definitely been a gradual process. I can remember a lot of run-walking my first summer running. That 23

said, even eight years later, my focus is still on gradual improvement. Q: What are you working on this fall to be able to better for at the ACC Championships? A: I’m focused primarily on staying healthy by doing the right things outside of practice: icing, eating right, and sleeping. In practice I am working on my mental game during long tempo runs and my finishing kick with quick 200s. Q: What was the biggest adjustment for you since your freshmen year? A: I know how to better take care of myself this year versus last year in order to perform well in practice and meets. Freshman year was about transitioning to college and working hard, and while this year is a continuation of that, the results are starting to show. Q: Do you prefer a tactical race, or do you like a race that’s fast from the gun? A: I definitely prefer fast races; my kick isn’t as strong as I would like it to be, so it’s to my advantage to get out hard. Q: Do you have a favorite workout during cross country, one that you think is especially beneficial? A: This year I really enjoy our long tempos on the track. For me, the hardest part of the race is the mental battle, and tempos are a great way to train my mind to stay focused through the discomfort. Q: How about track versus cross country? Do you prefer one over the other, and is cross country primarily preparation for track? A: I love cross country. Track and I are generally on rockier terms, but we’re working on it.

Hesslau posted a time of 17:56.9 to finish first at the 2015 season-opening meet and earn her second straight FAU Invitational championship. “I’m very pround of where the team is at and am very excited,” Hesslau said. “To have these times off increased mileage alone has me looking forward to our season ahead.” The junior’s time ranks fifth all-time in UM history, while newcomer Anne Den Otter placed second with personal-best time of 18:51.2 that ranks ninth in school history. Mulloy Manning rounded out Miami’s top women’s performers as the sophomore placed eighth with a personal-best time of 19:58.7. “Gabby took control after Mile 1, “ Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “She looked to be in good fitness. Anne and Mulloy ran aggressive and that earned them personal-bests.” Sophomore Sean Grossman was Miami’s top finisher in the men’s 5K, placing sixth with a time of 16:02.0. Junior Jon Keller also turned in a solid showing, placing 11th with a time of 16:28.6. Freshman Sean Hagert was not far behind Keller, finishing 14th with a time of 16:44.5. “Grossman, Keller and Hagert performed like I thought they would, very strong,” Griffiths said. “Overall, today gave me a gauge of where we currently are as a team. I’m excited about the strong front packs for both the men and women, but we will need to get better efforts from our number 4 through 7 runners.” The women finished second with 38 points, while Miami’s men placed third with 45 points. The Hurricanes are back in action on Sept. 19 at the Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

SCHEDULE/RESULTS (3-4-0) DATE
@CanesFutbol Rolls to 5-1 Victory over UNF CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team recorded its third win in a row Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium, downing North Florida 5-1. Sophomore midfielder/forward Grace Rapp tallied a pair of goals for the Hurricanes, who scored five-plus goals in a match for the first time since beating Cleveland State 6-1 Sept. 6, 2013. “I said before the game that what we struggled with in the past is having intensity from the first few minutes,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “So that was our goal, to just come out and fight, be intense, to have energy and high pressure. That’s what they did. I think that helped us create a lot of scoring opportunities.” Senior forward Amy Schmidt opened the scoring in the 16th minute with her fourth goal of the season. She buried a penalty kick that was awarded to Miami (3-4-0) after freshman midfielder Ainsly Wolfinbarger was tripped in the box. Under a minute later, Schmidt was on the assisting end of what proved to be the match-winning goal. The Lenexa, Kan. native received a long ball from redshirt junior defender Shannon McCarthy, found Gracie Lachowecki in the box and the junior forward beat North Florida (1-6-0) junior goalkeeper Victoria Ekeli for her third goal of the year, making it 2-0 Hurricanes.

Miami was not yet done before the intermission though, as for the second-straight home match the Hurricanes tallied three goals in a half. In the 30th minute, Rapp made a sensational run down the right side of the field, dribbled through the Ospreys defense and put it home for her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Emily Auld and freshman midfielder Jamie Brunworth both earned their first assists of 2015 on the play, and for Brunworth it was the first of her career.
“We asked [Grace] to commit herself to defend first and then look forward and be creative on to the attack,” Monroe said. “We’ve just been working on her being an overall player, defending and going forward. She’s very creative on the ball. When she has an opportunity, I would like her to shoot more, but she is very creative on the ball. She puts herself in good spots.” The Hurricanes were far from done scoring, despite the three-goal lead at halftime. Senior forward Jasmine Paterson tallied her first goal of the 2015 campaign in the 67th minute when she finished off a corner kick from Wolfinbarger to make it 4-0. For Wolfinbarger, it marked her fourth match in a row with an assist. Under one minute after going up by four, the Hurricanes conceded goal for the first time in greater than 275 minutes. North Florida senior midfielder Lanie Keating scored on a penalty kick to get the Ospreys on the board. Not long after, Miami got that goal right back. Rapp, who had two goals in the Hurricanes’ exhibition win over North Florida last year, scored her second goal of the day when she tapped in a rebound in the 71st minute off a shot by Paterson, who was credited with an assist. That would conclude the scoring for the day, as Miami earned a 5-1 victory. The victory gives Miami its first three-match winning streak since Sept. 1-8, 2013, a stretch that included the aforementioned win over Cleveland State. The win over the Vikings was also the last time four different Hurricanes scored in a match and Lachowecki was among the quartet that day too. Additionally, sophomore midfielder Danielle Savage made her Miami debut Sunday. “Everyone that got in the game did something for us. We had six freshmen play [as well as] a lot of players who haven’t had a lot of playing time from last year,” Monroe said. “I think it was a great game for us to get our entire roster in. Everybody played except for players who were hurt and all the goalkeepers. I was very excited about that, but I give the starters credit because if they didn’t put the ball away and score some goals, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.” Miami had a 25-4 edge over North Florida in shots, led 7-1 in corner kicks and had a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal, with the Ospreys’ lone tally in that department coming on a penalty kick. The Hurricanes will be back on the field Friday, Sept. 18 when they open ACC play at Wake Forest (3-2-2) at 7:00 p.m. in Winston Salem, N.C. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Mulloy awarded French Legion of Honour
Former University of Miami tennis coach Gardnar Mulloy was awarded the French Legion of Honour, the highest distinction in France, by the consulate general of France this week. Mulloy, who will be 102 years old this fall, was the Hurricanes tennis coach for 10 seasons (1935-43, 1947) and is recognized as the organizer of UM tennis. The French Legion of Honour, or in full the National Order of the Legion of Honour, was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to recognize eminent accomplishments of service to France. In his late 20s, Mulloy served in the navy four years during World War II, earning the rank of lieutenant and commanding officer of a tank-landing ship, the USS Alameda County. His ship participated in the invasion of Southern France in August 1944. He is a member of nine tennis halls of fame and is the oldest living member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. In 75 years of playing, he collected 127 national championships and 25 international titles, playing in senior events into his mid-90s. In 1939, Mulloy won his first U.S. Championship with his father in the Father and Sons doubles, but it certainly was not his last title. Teaming up with Bill Talbert, the duo was ranked No. 1 and won US Open doubles titles in 1942, 1945, 1946 and 1948. Pairing with Budge Patty in 1957, he set the record as the oldest player to have won men’s doubles at Wimbledon. One year earlier, he advanced to the finals of mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Althea Gibson. In addition, Mulloy was ranked among the world’s top 10 in singles play for 14 years — including a No. 1 world ranking in 1952. He helped the United States win three Davis Cup trophies — in 1946, 1948 and 1949 — and played for the US in 12 Davis Cup ties. Mulloy, who earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Miami, played football and boxed for the Hurricanes before starting the tennis program. As the head coach, he recruited Pancho Segura, a three-time NCAA singles champion. In 2013, the City of Miami renamed a section of road near the then-99-year-old’s longtime home in Spring Gardens, calling it “Gardnar Mulloy Way.” 29

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The ITA announced its 2015 preseason rankings Tuesday afternoon and the University of Miami is one of just five women’s teams in the nation with five ranked singles players. Senior Stephanie Wagner is atop the group of Hurricanes and ranked sixth in the country, while sophomore Sinead Lohan comes in at No. 13 nationally. “I am happy with our players’ starting points, but we need to stay focused on the ending point,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We have gotten off to an explosive start in practice—one of the strongest I’ve seen in many years—so the future is bright.” In addition to Wagner and Lohan, senior Clementina Riobueno checks in at No. 63 on the ITA’s list, followed by sophomore Wendy Zhang at No. 73 and sophomore Yolimar Ogando, who is tied for No. 94. A native of Amberg, Germany, Wagner ranked second nationally among ACC players, seniors, and international players. She was named an ITA AllAmerican and First Team All-ACC, as well as the ITA National Player to Watch. Wagner advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 NCAA Singles Championship and finished the year ranked ninth. Lohan is coming off a season in which she earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors and was both an ITA All-American and a Second Team All-ACC selection. The Waterford, Ireland native finished 2015 as the third-highest ranked freshman in the nation and is now the third-ranked sophomore. She reached the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals last year and ended the season ranked No. 20. “Having Wagner begin the season at six and Lohan at 13 is exciting,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “These two are looking to dominate this year. What is most interesting is that they have so much more in their tanks. We need to get there and keep having fun while doing it.” Riobueno was nationally ranked the entire 2015 campaign and peaked at No. 61 in the country. She was named the ACC Player of the Week March 3, 2015. Zhang was also ranked all of last season and rose as high as No. 58. She earned All-ACC Academic Team honors as a freshman. For Ogando, this is her debut in the ITA rankings. She recorded a straight set victory over NCAA Team Championship MVP Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt in her first season as a Hurricane. Along with the quintet of Hurricanes in the singles rankings, Riobueno and Zhang check in at No. 50 on the doubles list. Although they have yet to play together, both were ranked with other partners at least five separate weeks during the 2015 season, with Riobueno featured from wire to wire. Additionally, the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships selections were released Friday by the ITA. Lohan and Wagner are in the singles main draw, while Riobueno is in the qualifying draw and Zhang is an alternate. Riobueno and Zhang are also alternates for the qualifying doubles field. The Hurricanes are set to begin the fall season, as the team hosts the Miami Fall Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center from Sept. 18 through 20. Auburn, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Pitt, and reigning NCAA national champion Vanderbilt will all be coming to Coral Gables for the tournament. Lohan and Wagner will be on the road playing in the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. the same three days. Swimming Opens Season at All-Florida Invite
The Miami Hurricanes swimming team opens up the 2015-16 season Friday at the Pinch A Penny All Florida Invitational hosted by the University of Florida at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center Pool. Teams competing at All Florida include the Hurricanes, the host Gators, FGCU, Florida State, Nova Southeastern and Towson. Miami is competing in All Florida for the third straight year under head coach Andy Kershaw, but the season-opening, three-day event presents a unique challenge from years past. “This is by far the earliest I’ve ever been part of a college competition, which has added a great dynamic to the beginning of the year,” said Kershaw, now in his third year as head coach of the Hurricanes. “It has put us in a great position to lay the foundation of what will lead to a ton of success, as far as race strategy goes.” Miami returns a number of key contributors from a season ago, including second-year team-captain and senior My Fridell, juniors Angela Algee, Cameron Davis and Julia Schippert as well as sophomores Julie Suaerz and Ksenia Yuskova. Kershaw, who described the team’s nucleus as “forceful”, is excited about the returning group but also stressed the importance of each and every contribution on a 19-member team (15 swimmers, four divers). “With our team size, everyone makes quite an impact,” he said. “Starting at the top with My, I think she’s going to have a tremendous year. Angela also had a great summer, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic trials, and I think is poised to take another step forward coming up. We’ll have Cameron leading us in the distance events and Julia in the breaststroke events, and Julie has looked great as well. Ksenia, who we added in the middle of the year last season, now has her opportunity to be with us from the very beginning.” Fridell is one of two team captains, joined by redshirt senior diver Kara McCormack. Only the swimmers are traveling to Gainesville for the weekend meet. The returning swimmers are joined by a group of six newcomers, highlighted by junior transfer Christina Leander who spent the first two seasons of her collegiate career at Tennessee. “Christina is a transfer, so she’s in a little different spot, but she already has the sense of, ‘I’m going to prove being a Hurricane means something special to me.’ It’s exciting to see.” Leander will be making her Hurricanes debut along with freshmen Madison Emery, Katie Sickinger, Sydney Story and Roxanne Yu. “I think the freshmen all kind of have that anxiousness of wearing the U on their chest and the U on their cap. That’s going to mean something special,” he said. “It’s exciting to see them bring that attitude daily, and it’s going to be exciting to see them put that to use in competition.” For Kershaw, Friday’s first meet is not as much about final times as it is executing strategy. “At this point, as I’ve told them, I know they’re going to go faster throughout the year,” Kershaw said. “We don’t have to worry so much about that. But if we establish the right way to swim the events, that will allow them to swim the fastest they can at the end of the season, when it matters most.” Friday’s events include the 200-meter freestyle relay, the 500 free, the 200 IM, the 50 free and the 400 medley relay. Saturday’s slate consists of 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. Sunday’s final day includes the 1,650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay. 32

Miami Alum Yanez Sends Reign to NWSL Final
After a tremendous season for the NWSL’s Seattle Reign, University of Miami alumna Beverly (Goebel) Yanez scored her biggest goal of the year Sunday night against the Washington Spirit. In the 71st minute of the NWSL semifinals at Memorial Stadium, the former Hurricane standout found the back of the net on her first touch of the match. She beat Washington goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, a member of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup champion U.S. National Team. Yanez’s goal would stand up as the match winner in what became a 3-0 victory for the Reign, who is headed back to the NWSL final for the second-straight year. A native of Moreno Valley, Calif., Yanez played at Miami from 2007-09 after transferring in from Sacramento State. Yanez started 17 of 20 matches for Seattle during the 2015 regular season and finished fifth in the league with nine goals. She also ranked eighth in the NWSL in shots on goal with 25. The Reign went undefeated at home this season and won the NWSL Shield, given to the team with the league’s top record, for the second year in a row. Yanez ranked in the top three on Seattle in goals, shots on goal, shot attempts, and shots on goal percentage. The NWSL final between the Reign and FC Kansas City will be held Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9:30 p.m. at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. and it will be shown live on Fox Sports 1. @CanesVB Beats No. 20 Purdue
Tournament MVP Taylor Scott leads Canes past ranked Boilermakers squad The University of Miami volleyball team defeated No. 20 Purdue in five sets to open its stay at the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge. The Canes jumped to a 2-0 lead, winning the first two sets 25-19 to head into the intermission with a big advantage in the match. But the Boilermakers showed why they are considered one of the top teams in the country, battling to take the next two sets 2624 and force a decisive fifth set. “It’s a huge win for our program,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “Purdue is a good team and they fought us tough. I’m proud of the way the girls played after disappointing Games 3 and 4. It was exciting to see them understand the situation and respond.” Miami (4-3, 0-0 ACC) earned the victory with a resilient effort in the final set, scoring four straight points to close out the 15-13 win in the fifth set that was caped by an Olga Strantzali service ace that secured the five-set win for the Canes. “I think we understood the challenge,” Gandara said. “Purdue is good team and we saw it on film. They are a physical, Big Ten team. We are learning to go play-to-play and point-to-point. We controlled our errors in Game 5 and it worked out well.” Strantzali was Miami’s leader in the attack, notching a team-high 18 kills, while tallying seven digs, a block and a team-high three service aces. The sophomore was one of three Hurricanes to finish with double-digit kills, joined by senior Taylor Scott and junior Kelsie Groot. Both Scott and Groot finished with double-doubles against the Boilermakers. Scott recorded 14 kills and a team-high 22 digs adding four blocks and a service ace, while Groot picked up 13 kills and 18 digs against 35

Purdue. “It was a good defensive match I think Taylor and Kelsie responded,” Gandara said. “We changed our defensive scheme and it paid off. We had been working at it in practice and it was a good effort defensively.” Miami’s middle blockers were active at the net as Alexis Mourning and Lucia Pampana combined for 16 kills and eight blocks. Mourning showed her senior experience, picking up nine kills and a team-high six blocks, while the freshman Pampana added seven kills and two blocks. Haley Templeton paced the Hurricane offense, dishing out 52 assists and adding three kills and a service ace. Senior Kalysta White recorded 19 digs as Miami’s libero and added two service aces to round out the seven tallied by the Hurricanes in the night. Saturday’s victory over the 20th-ranked Boilermakers was Miami’s first win over a ranked team since beating No. 12 North Carolina in five sets on Nov. 3, 2013. The victory was also the program’s first win over a ranked opponent away from Coral Gables since Miami beat No. 15 Wisconsin in four sets in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Dec 7, 2002. “This was a total team effort and I am proud of the girls and how they competed,” Gandara said. Miami will close out the non-conference portion of its 2015 schedule this week with the FIU/Miami Challenge, hosting Seattle University at 7 pm on Sept. 17 and UCF at 7 PM on Sept. 18. Both matches will be play at the James L. Knight Sports Complex and admission is free.

The University of Miami rowing program will compete in three events in the 2015 fall season, head coach Dave Sanderson announced Tuesday. The Hurricanes will row in three events this fall, including a repeat appearance at the prestigious Head of the Charles. Sanderson believes the competitive schedule will help Miami open the 2015-16 season strong. “I am looking forward to our fall racing schedule,” Sanderson said. “Our main goals for the fall season revolve around developing technical skill and physiology for the spring season. But, of course, it is fun to race at these fall events and the team looks forward to them.” Miami will open the fall at the Head of the Indian Creek on Oct. 11. The Hurricanes will compete on their home course in their first competitive racing of the fall. The Canes will have two entries in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. Miami has two entries in the Club four event scheduled for October 17-18. Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes had four boats compete at the Head of the Hooch. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 7-8. “I am pleased that we will again get to race at the Head of the Charles in Boston,” Sanderson said. The Head of the Charles is always a great race and later on in November nearly the full squad, novices included, will get to race at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga. I am excited to see what kind of speed we can build between now and then.” For official updates and information please visit our website at HurricaneSports.com or “Like” us on Facebook at http://www. facebook.com/canesrowing. Sign Up Now for Fall Cane Nation
This fall, the University of Miami men’s basketball team becomes heroes for kids during Cane Nation, a once-in-a-lifetime experience providing boys in grades K-6 the unique opportunity to interact with Hurricane basketball players in a true basketball setting. “When I was a youngster, I loved following college basketball,” said Coach Jim Larrañaga. “It was a real thrill for me to meet college players. They were my heroes. Cane Nation provides that for youth in the Miami area.” Cane Nation was started in Miami four years ago by Larrañaga, who wanted to give kids an opportunity to get excited about the Hurricanes, the players that are going to be their coaches and basketball in general. “We want to provide boys the unique opportunity to interact with our University of Miami basketball players in a true basketball setting,” added Larrañaga. “The kids will have so much fun they will be talking about it for years to come.” Cane Nation will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the University of Miami Field House on Sundays - September 13, 20, 27 and Oct. 4 for boys in grades K-6. Cost of the camp is $225. At Cane Nation participants are divided into age groups and evaluated by UM players on the first day of camp. From there, UM players - acting as coaches - draft their own teams and the young campers are sent their draft status and signing bonus in the mail. After teams are formed, each day of Cane Nation involves a session of personalized instruction to learn some of the fundamentals of the sport, followed by three competitive games. During player meetings, the staff also puts an emphasis on academic, social and athletic growth and development. Each Cane Nation participant will receive a Cane Nation T-shirt and shorts, as well as the opportunity to spend quality time with our University of Miami men’s basketball team. The UM players interact with the Cane Nation participants at camp, but also throughout the season, at games and in the community. “Cane Nation gives us an opportunity for the Miami players to coach these kids, who they look up to so much,” said Adam Fisher, director of operations for men’s basketball. “Coach L is great in giving back to the community.” Space is limited for the Cane Nation and registration will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up now at GoCoachL. com. The University of Miami men’s basketball team will open conference play against Syracuse on Jan. 2 in Coral Gables, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced. “In my opinion, the ACC is the best basketball conference in the country, with six teams led by coaches with more than 400 victories, and six of the Top 25 winningest programs in history,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “Every game will be a test for our players, so we will have to play at our best both at home and on the road every single night. Our demanding non-conference schedule, highlighted by our home game against the University of Florida, should prepare us for the rigors of league play.” The Canes will play 10 games that will be broadcast on national TV - nine on the ESPN family of networks and one on CBS - with the remaining games on either the ACC Network or Regional Sports Networks (RSN). Eight of Miami’s 18 games will be played against teams that participated in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, including four at home against Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia. Miami opens the 2016 ACC schedule with a pair of home games before hitting the road for three straight away from Coral Gables. After playing the Orange on Jan. 2, the Canes will host in-state rival Florida State Jan. 9 in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2 from the BankUnited Center. “This year we have to defend our home court, and to do that we need our fans to help us create an electric atmosphere in the BankUnited Center for every game,” Larrañaga added. “Together we will create a true home court advantage at the BUC.” The first of two matchups with Virginia opens a three-game road swing, as the Canes travel to Charlottesville Jan. 12 to face the defending ACC regular season champion Cavaliers on ESPNU. Miami then battles Clemson in South Carolina Jan. 16 followed by a matchup at Boston College Jan. 20. New at The U: Clara Tanielian
With three weeks at the University of Miami under her belt, Clara Tanielian of the women’s tennis team spoke with HurricaneSports. com about what it has been like. A transfer who hails from Ensuès-laRedonne, France, Tanielian also previewed what she is most looking forward to at Miami and more . . . Q: You’ve been at UM for a few weeks now. What’s it been like so far? A: Well, it’s really different from what I’ve been used to doing and I really enjoy it so far. Like, playing tennis and studying, it’s just what I want to do and the team and the coaches are amazing and the campus is also. The atmosphere is really nice, so it couldn’t be better. Q: What’s been your single most favorite part so far? A: I would say—I don’t really know actually—I enjoyed when I got here and the team welcomed me [when I got off the bus]. I enjoyed the first practice too. It was very intense, very hard, but still nice too. [In addition], maybe just when we went to the restaurant with the girls, just trying to get to know them and just having fun together. It’s really nice and very different from what I did last year, so I like it. Q: You mentioned when the girls greeted you when you got here, but also when you were flying to Miami you ended up being on the plane with the women’s basketball team [returning from its foreign tour]. How interesting was that to see so many Hurricanes on the way to Miami with you? A: Yeah, it was cool. Actually, I was so surprised in the airport and I just was so shy. I didn’t want to talk to them in the beginning and then I just tried to begin a conversation and they were super nice. I was really surprised at the way they tried to integrate me into their group and then at the airport in Miami they were super nice too. They helped me to do many things, so it was super nice and a good first vision of what the University will be. 43

Q: Are you taking any fun classes? A: Yeah, I’m taking philosophy. I thought philosophy wouldn’t be nice at all, but it’s actually a really cool class . . . and we’re talking a lot and it’s interesting and the teacher is funny. So this one is fun, and I love every single class I’m taking. Q: Is there anyone on the team who has started to show you around and kind of mentor you as you’re getting adjusted to UM at all? A: I would say Steffi [Stephanie Wagner]. She’s a senior and she helped me to find [where places are] at the University and helped me to figure out some stuff, but Siny [Sinead Lohan] or Wendy [Zhang] too. And the other girls too, it’s just [they were the] ones who . . . spent time with me the first few days, but the other girls are really nice too. Q: What are you most excited for about being a Hurricane? A: Playing team matches. Q: That’s something you haven’t done before, right? A: No, I’ve never done that before. I’m really looking forward to the spring season. I think it’s going to be lots of fun. Q: When you look back on it, what was it about Miami that made you feel like this was the school for you? A: The level of the tennis team, for sure. I know this was a strong team and most specifically the coaches. I met the coaches and I really think they were wise and the girls were super nice too . . . I would say the girls and the coaches really is what made my decision.

Three of the teams during that stretch won NCAA Tournament games last season, with Pitt making the second round, North Carolina advancing to the Sweet 16 and Florida State reaching the Elite Eight. Miami has eight games during February: home vs. Syracuse (Feb. 1, 7:00 p.m., RSN/ESPN3), at Boston College (Feb. 4, 7:00 p.m.), home vs. Duke (Feb. 7, 1:00 p.m., RSN/ ESPN3), at Georgia Tech (Feb. 11, 7:00 p.m.), at Notre Dame (Feb. 14, 1:00 p.m., RSN/ESPN3), home vs. Virginia Tech (Feb. 21, 4:00 p.m., ESPN3), home vs. Louisville (Feb. 25, 7:00 p.m., ESPN3), and at Florida State (Feb. 28, TBA, ESPN2 or ESPN3). From that group, Syracuse got to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, Duke reached the Sweet 16, Notre Dame made the national championship, Louisville advanced to the Sweet 16, and, as aforementioned, Florida State was an Elite Eight participant. Last season, the Hurricanes handed Notre Dame its only conference loss in two years in the ACC. In addition to Miami’s eight contests against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015, the Hurricanes will also play three more games against teams that made the WNIT. “I’m looking forward to this season because I love the energy of this team,” Meier said. “I cannot wait to see that energy on the court as we seize the opportunity the ACC presents with so many games against teams that saw postseason success last year.” The last stretch of ACC action comes during the ACC Tournament, which runs from March 2-6 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. @CanesFutbol Captain’s Corner: Sept. 17
Erin McGovern shares some insight into the Hurricanes’ victories over FGCU and North Florida. Additionally, the redshirt senior midfielder touches on the start of ACC play, which is right around the corner . . . I’m writing to you all today after a great weekend for us Hurricanes! We had our first double-win weekend and we are hoping to keep this going. Friday we traveled to Florida Gulf Coast, a team with some pretty impressive wins so far this season. It was a very exciting game with a lot of back-and-forth play that resulted in a 1-0 win for us after a great finish by Emily Auld. While it wasn’t our cleanest game, we were able to scrape out a win, which was huge for our standings, as well as our momentum going forward. Even though we were all excited about the win, I think the highlight of the trip was the pizza we had on the way back. No more subs! (cough, cough) Saturday morning training was light because it was a day between two games. We started practice with a jog to get our legs moving and then played some soccer tennis. This is a fun way to touch the ball while maintaining that competitive mindset for Sunday. We finished the day with an ice bath and some film in preparation for the next day. Sunday was gameday again against the University of North Florida. This was the perfect way to end non-conference play with a 5-1 win. There were a lot of great goals scored and combination play, which is exactly what we need to take into the rest of the season. This week is a very exciting week for us as we prepare to begin ACC play. We get to play against some of the best teams in the country and I know this team is more than ready. Thursday we will travel to North Carolina to take on Wake Forest on Friday night. Practices this week are more geared towards fine-tuning some things we need to work on, as well as fast paced possession and getting out of small spaces. We have worked so hard up to this point and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds. Thanks for reading!

O’Brien Called Up to ‘The Show’ by Diamondbacks
Former Miami Hurricanes standout Peter O’Brien became the latest #ProCanes call-up to the majors Tuesday, as the Arizona Diamondbacks announced the promotion of their star slugger from the Triple-A Reno Aces. O’Brien, who was selected in the second round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Yankees, was traded to Arizona during the 2013 season. He opened 2015 with the Aces, and was batting .284 with an .883 OPS at the time of his call-up Tuesday. Known for his powerful bat, O’Brien had 26 home runs and 107 RBI in 131 games for Reno this season. For his minor league career, O’Brien has totaled 92 home runs and 311 RBI. The Hialeah native is a career .273 minor league hitter and boasts a .539 career slugging percentage in over 1,500 minor league at bats. O’Brien played just one season with Miami (2012) before moving on to professional baseball. He was an All-ACC selection at catcher that year, and ranked first on the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.340), home runs (10), RBI (40), total bases (92), on-base percentage (.441) and slugging percentage (.626), despite playing in an injury-shortened season. O’Brien is ranked the ninth-best prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks system by MLB Pipeline.

He opened the year by going 16-for-27 for 173 yards and two touchdowns against BethuneCookman on Sept. 5. • Kaaya has a touchdown pass in 15 consecutive games. The only Miami quarterback in the last 20 years with a longer such streak is Ken Dorsey, who had streaks of 23 and 17 games in his illustrious Hurricane career. • Kaaya has thrown just three interceptions in his last 261 attempts. • Kaaya has thrown for more than 200 yards in 10 of his 15 career games. • The California native was one of only 15 quarterbacks in the country to throw for more than 3,000 yards, 26-or-more touchdowns and 12-or-fewer interceptions; he was the only true freshman quarterback in the country to accomplish this feat. • As a freshman in 2014, Kaaya was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive and ACC Overall Rookie of the Year after a stellar first campaign with the Hurricanes. • Kaaya ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing yards (3,198), and led the ACC in passing touchdowns (26), passing efficiency (145.9) and passing yards per completion (14.5).
THE SOUTH FLORIDA DUO
• South Florida products Joe Yearby (291) and Mark Walton (169) have combined for 460 all purpose yards and seven touchdowns. • Of their 460 all purpose yards, Yearby (186) and Walton (127) have combined for 313 rushing yards for an average of 6.52 yards per carry. • Yearby and Walton also have combined for 48 carries and none of those carries has resulted in lost yardage for either running back.
DEFENSIVE MENTALITY
• Miami’s defense this season has recorded four interceptions on 45 pass attempts. • Last week against FAU, the Owls tallied 29 plays, 227 yards and 17 points on their first three offensive drives, but the Canes responded as they held the Owls to just 4.3 yards per play (38 plays, 162 yards, three points) for the remainder of the game. • Miami’s defensive unit held BethuneCookman to just 79 yards in its 2015 season opener and tallied its first shutout since 2010. • The Hurricanes are ranked eighth nationally in total defense through the first two weeks of the season, holding opponents to just 234.0 yards per game. • Miami’s defensive unit held BethuneCookman to just 79 yards in its 2015 season opener and tallied its first shutout since 2010. • BCU’s 79 yards of total offense was the first time in the Al Golden era that an opponent was held to fewer than 100 yards of total yards of offense. • Miami’s secondary has tallied four interceptions on 45 pass attempts.

umSHOF Celebrity Golf Tournament - Oct. 23
The UM Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Miami’s Hurricane Club are proud to announce a partnership for the 23rd annual UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit the Hurricane Club, hosted by Alonzo Highsmith. The event will take place on Friday, October 23, 2015 at the beautiful Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables. The tournament begins with registration at 11 a.m., including lunch provided by the Hole In The Wall Pub. Golfers get started with a 12:30 p.m. tee time on the 18 lush holes of the Biltmore Golf Course. Following the round, the awards dinner will be held in one of the historic Biltmore Hotel’s luxurious ballrooms. Entry fee includes golf, lunch, awards dinner, goody bag and golf shirt. “We are excited to announce this partnership with the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame,” Athletic Director Blake James said. “Not only will this provide a great opportunity for Hurricane Club Members and Canes Fans to play golf with some Hurricanes Greats across all sports, but it will raise money to support our current student-athletes who will be future UM Hall of Famers. We are looking forward to a great day of golf at the Biltmore on October 23rd.” Highsmith, a member of the 1983 National Championship team and a first round pick in the 1987 NFL draft, has graciously accepted an invitation to serve as the host for this year’s event. An explosive fullback who rushed for nearly 2,000 yards in his UM career, Alonzo’s team high 50 yards and a touchdown led the Hurricanes to their first National Title in the 1984 Orange Bowl Classic. He spent 5 seasons in the NFL, and was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. An NFL player for six seasons, Highsmith enters his 17th year with the Green Bay Packers’ as their Senior Personnel Executive. “It’s truly an honor to host the University Miami Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament and hoping many former players and alumni come out to support,” Highsmith said. “I’m a proud alumnus of both academics and sports, and a Cane for life.” To view Highsmith’s UMSHoF Induction video, go to http://www.umsportshalloffame.com/ alonzo-highsmith.html “Once again, the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to present our annual celebrity golf tournament on Friday, October 23rd”, said UMSHoF President Gerard Loisel. “We’re excited that for the second consecutive year, we will be partnering with the Hurricane Club to create a wonderful event that allows fans an opportunity to spend a day playing golf with Hurricane greats of the past. It’s a great opportunity to not only raise funds for the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame, but to also provide scholarships for future Hall of Famers” Sponsorships for the golf tournament are still available for corporations and businesses.
