Miramar to Miami: Tracy Howard
The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Over the course of the 2013 football season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is Miramar native Tracy Howard. Tracy Howard is a trailblazer. The Miramar, Fla., native and former star defensive back at Miramar High School is not afraid to challenge himself and he certainly does not shy away from forming his own identity. Howard, who was one of the top high school cornerbacks in the country his senior year of high school, was recruited by every major college football program in the United States. The 5-foot-11 corner could have chosen to play at in-state schools Florida or Florida State. Howard could have traveled west and played for USC or he could have followed the long line of Miramar Patriots to West Virginia. Instead, Howard chose to stay home and play for the Hurricanes. Howard’s decision to attend Miami is just one of many examples that prove his desire to forge his own path. He is one of four Miramar High alums on the 2013 roster, joined by Williams, receiver Malcolm Lewis and linebacker Jermaine Grace. After stepping foot on campus as a heralded recruit, Howard wasted little time making an impact. He played in all 12 games as a freshman in 2012, tallying 17 tackles and four pass breakups. Howard notched the first interception of his collegiate career in the Hurricanes’ 21-16 win over the rival Gators. The talented cover corner has three tackles and one interception through the first two games of the 2013 season. With 10 games to go in the 2013 regular season, Howard will be one of the many integral parts to Miami’s defensive successes. 12

The “Windy City Flyer did it again Sunday, powering the Chicago Bears special teams unit in a 31-30 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Hester, who set a new franchise single-game record with 249 return yards, broke his previous personal record of 245 in the victory. The Bears’ eighth-year specialist, who recorded returns of 74 and 80 yards on his first two attempts, recorded the third-highest kick return yardage in NFL history for a player who had five returns or fewer. Hester ranks first in the NFL with 280 return yards this season, 60 more than the next highest total, and is currently averaging 46.7 yards per return through week two.
Dave Sanderson Named Miami Rowing HC
After a comprehensive search, the University of Miami has named Dave Sanderson as its head rowing coach. Sanderson, a native of Providence, R.I. and a Yale University graduate, returns to the Hurricanes’ program after spending a year as an assistant coach at Miami under Debra Morgan in 2006. “I am excited to have David back with the U family,” Miami Sr. Associate AD for Facilities & Event Operations Tim Wise said. “He is an established and successful head coach and will be a great fit for our program and student-athletes. I look forward to working with David and him continuing to move the program forward.” Following his year with the Canes, Sanderson accepted the head coaching position at Barry University in 2007. The accomplished coach guided the Buccaneers for six seasons and lead Barry to three straight NCAA Championships, but Sanderson is excited about the opportunity to return to Miami. “I am extremely honored to be the next head coach of the University of Miami women’s rowing program,” Sanderson said. “It has been fantastic to watch the team progress over the last few years and I look forward to continuing that trend to the next level. I am really looking forward to meeting the student-athletes and getting them out on the water taking strokes. I am sure they are eager to get on the water, too. I really appreciate getting this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.” Prior to his first stint at the University of Miami, Sanderson served as an assistant varsity coach for Boston University men’s crew for three years and as a coach at Community Rowing in Newton, Mass. While with the Boston University Terriers, Sanderson helped the program achieve its best-ever result at the 2005 IRA National Championships with a sixth-place finish. Sanderson rowed at Yale as a member of three varsity lightweight crews while earning his bachelor’s degree in American studies in 1998. As part of his lightweight crews, Sanderson won two bronze medals and a silver medal at Eastern Sprints, as well as a silver at the IRA National Championship regatta.

The Dolphins’ second-year running back delivered some big carries in Indianapolis, including the team’s second touchdown of the day on a 10-yard dash to the endzone. Miller, who paced all Dolphins rushers with 69 yards on 14 carries, came just five yards shy of setting a new personal record single-game rushing yards. The Miami, Fla., native clinched the 24-20 win in the fourth quarter with a big run for a first down, and led all running backs in the contest by averaging just shy of five yards per carry (4.93). The touchdown was just the second career score for Miller, who will shoulder much of the Dolphins’ rushing attack in his second season with the hometown team.

Miami Opens ACC Play After a flawless finish through its nonconfernece schedule, the University of Miami women’s soccer team opened its grueling ACC slate with a trip to North Carolina for matchups with No. 12 Duke and No. 7 Wake Forest. The Hurricanes looked far from outmatched against one of the nation’s premier sides at Duke, as the visitors entered the halftime locker room to a scoreless draw. Junior goalkeeper Emily Lillard made four first-half saves, including two at close range, to keep the Blue Devils off the board, while Miami countered with a balanced offensive attack. The visitors had the best chance of either team in the first frame, as senior Tara Schwitter lined up for a penalty kick just five minutes before halftime. The Oradell, N.J., native, who earned the chance after being taken down in the box, saw her shot saved by Duke goalie Ali Kershner on an impressive dive to maintain the empty scoreboard.
Despite the early chances, Miami faltered down the stretch, eventually falling 3-0. “I give Duke a lot of credit, they were able to finish the dangerous chances they created,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “In these games you can’t be dispossessed of the ball in critical areas of the field. You can lose it, but what you do after that is crucial.” Even after a 4-0 loss on the road in WinstonSalem, Monroe and her staff are excited for the opportunity to return home to the Cobb Stadium pitch and face two more talented foes: NC State and North Carolina. “We need to get the entire team on the same page,” Monroe said. “We’re looking forward to our next two games and are excited to play in front of our home crowd again.” NC State (Thurs., Sept. 19) kickoff is set for 7 p.m., while UNC (Sun., Sept 22) is slated for 1 p.m.

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT
DO YOU COMMUNICATE VIA THE INTERNET? The internet has provided the opportunity for Canes fans and supporters from all over the world to communicate with each other in a ways not possible before. The following regulations regarding the internet are very important for all Canes to know: Message Boards: University of Miami fans participating on a message board are not permitted to write, call, instant message, text, chat with, or e-mail a prospect. Further, as soon as someone on a message board e-mails or sends a message out to a recruit, they automatically become a booster and are subject to the NCAA rules prohibiting such contact. Social Networking: Boosters are not permitted to use social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace to contact or otherwise attempt to correspond with prospects. This includes, but is not limited to, posting on a wall, using the inbox/e-mail feature, instant messaging, “@replies”, “mentions”, or direct messaging. As electronic communication technology continues to advance, the opportunity for the supporters of an athletics program to have impermissible contact with a prospect or that prospect’s family is greatly increased, however, the institution’s responsibility for that contact remains the same. We ask that all Canes fans and supporters who have access to the type of Web sites described above assist us in following the guidelines that govern those sites. As always, your efforts to help the University of Miami maintain a culture of compliance are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. “Ask Before You Act” by contacting the University of Miami Compliance Office directly.
