James Named to Good Works Team University of Miami senior RB Mike James has been selected as one of 22 student-athletes to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, announced Tuesday by Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association. James is one of only 11 college football players from the Football Bowl Subdivision to be honored with the award, one of the most prestigious community service awards in all of college football. He is the sixth Miami Hurricane to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, joining Robert Bass (1993), Tony Coley (1996), Ryan Clement (1997), Nate Books (1998) and Joaquin Gonzalez (2001). For 21 years the award has honored the college football players whose charitable involvement and community service contributions stand out among the more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in the sport. The student-athletes nominated for this prestigious honor embody the true spirit of “teamwork” and “giving back.” There were 117 nominees for the award this summer and a special voting panel selected 11 members from the FBS and 11 more from the FCS, Divisions II, III and the NAIA. During his career at the University of Miami, James has contributed countless hours to supporting community service organizations in the Miami community, including volunteering for Empowered Youth, an organization providing mentoring to at-risk youth, serving as a project manager for the 2012 University of Miami Bone Marrow Drive and serving meals to the homeless with the Miami Rescue Mission. James has also been involved with The Ronald McDonald House, Rushing the Community and Canes on Patrol. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing. James, who is on pace to graduate in December with a degree in sport administration with a minor in sociology, will be invited to join fellow 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Work Team members in New Orleans to participate in a community project before the Allstate Sugar Bowl in January. The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will also be honored during halftime of the Allstate Sugar Bowl on ESPN. The 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team voting panel includes: former Good Works Team members Alex Van Pelt (Pittsburgh, 1992), Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994), Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998), Grant Irons (Notre Dame, 1999), Brian 10

About the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® The Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams® were established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate partnered to present the award starting with the 2008 season. About AFCA The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 11,000 members around the world ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to “maintain the highest possible standards in football and in the coaching profession” and to “provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football.”

Sebastian the Ibis, the University of Miami’s famous mascot, is one of 16 spirited heroes vying to become the 2012 Capital One Mascot of the Year, announced Monday by Capital One. Sebastian is one of three ACC mascots in the competition, joining Testudo (Maryland) and Ms. Wuf (NC State). Fans will be able to vote for their favorite mascots via Twitter. Regular season vote officially opens at 12 p.m. EDT on Mon., Sept. 3, and continues weekly through Mon., Nov. 26. The top eight mascots with the best head-to-head records will then compete in a bracketstyle, single-elimination competition to determine the overall winner. Fans can vote at www.CapitalOneBowl. com, on Facebook and on Twitter. All voting information appears at www.CapitalOneBowl.com. For the first time in its 11-year history, the competition will include two female mascots – Ms. Wuf and Wilma T. Wildcat from Arizona. The duo will be joined by four other competition newbies – Colorado State’s Cam the Ram, Missouri’s Truman the Tiger, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight and Texas Tech’s Red Raider. The rest of the 16-member 2012 Capital One AllAmerica Mascot Team includes Cosmo (BYU), Sparty

(Michigan State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Wolfie Jr. (Nevada), YoUDee (Delaware), Bucky Badger (Wisconsin), The Duck (Oregon) and Cocky (South Carolina). The quirky video vignettes will be released at www.CapitalOneBowl.com and www.Facebook.com/MascotChallenge. SEPTEMBER 27

1986 Upset Vinny Over OU In a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2, the Miami Hurricanes snapped their three-game losing streak to the Oklahoma Sooners, upsetting the nation’s top-ranked team and defending national champions, 28-16, in front of 71,451 fans at the Orange Bowl. The game, which featured five All-Americans and three College Football Hall of Famers, that was hyped as the “Game of the Century” featured eventual Heisman Trophy winning QB Vinny Testaverde and Oklahoma LB Brian Bosworth. The Hurricanes led 7-3 at the half and would pull away behind Testaverde’s

261 yards (21-of-28) and four touchdowns, two of which went to future Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin. It was the 20th battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in college football history and Miami became only the fourth No. 2 team to beat a No. 1. Miami and Oklahoma would meet less than two years later in the 1988 Orange Bowl in another No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup with the same outcome (Miami 20, Oklahoma 14).

Youth in Numbers ‘Canes open season with underclassmen lineup The 2011-12 women’s golf season concluded with a pair of freshmen — Rika Park and Leticia Ras-Anderica — competing as individuals at the 2012 NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio. Now sophomores, Park and Ras-Anderica lead an underclassmen-heavy lineup for the Miami Hurricanes, now in the third year under head coach Patti Rizzo. At the season-opening Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C., the Hurricanes tied for 18th overall out of 24 teams, while Ras-Anderica paced the team at 4-over (76-73-71=220), tying for 36th. Park finished two strokes behind her teammate at 6-over (72-74-76=222), tying for 48th overall. And, for the second consecutive tournament, it was Ras-Anderica posting the low score for the Canes. The Moraira, Spain, product carded a 9-over (75-79-71=225) to finish 18th overall, the Canes’ first individual top-20 finish of the fall. Park tied for 22nd at 11-over 227, while Hendee, Riehle and Ocampo finished 31st, 37th and 46th, respectively. Behind Enemy Lines Behind Enemy Lines is a weekly feature on HurricaneSports.com, highlighting the passion of Miami fans in opposing team territory. And if you’re reading this from Raleigh, N.C., give us a shout at @HurricaneSports – we want to hear from you.

Katie Koziol | Atlanta, Georgia How did you become a Hurricanes fan? “I applied to Miami for graduate school and knew if I got in, I was heading there despite the fact I had never been before or visited campus. As soon as I received my acceptance letter, I became a Canes fan. My mom and I flew to Miami shortly thereafter to visit, and as soon as I saw all the palm trees on campus, I knew it was the place for me. Little did I know that attending The U would be one of the best decisions I have ever made. The traditions, campus, opportunities and - most importantly the people that make up the Canes family are second to none. It is a privilege to be a Hurricane and one I do not take for granted.” Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Atlanta? “Surprisingly no, not really. Atlanta is a melting pot of sorts and full of passionate college sports fans. Having an airport that is as big and busy as Atlanta’s helps too, as there are plenty of flights to South Florida (or anywhere else the Canes are playing) if I want to go to a game.” Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city? “I travel a lot for work and often am on the road during weekends. There have been several instances where I have welcomed a delayed flight or two, as it meant I could watch the Canes live on television somewhere in the airport. If I am home in Atlanta, and the Canes are not in town playing Georgia Tech, you will likely find me in front of the big screen TV at my house during Canes games. Sometimes there is just no place like home.” Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Atlanta? “Yes! I have the pleasure of working with a couple of Canes, which is a lot of fun. I also have some dear friends, and fellow Canes, that live outside the city. We try and get together as much as possible to cheer on the Hurricanes.” How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games? “I am incredibly lucky to work for a company that fully supports its employees showcasing their school pride. I have a space in my office dedicated to The U. It includes a seat from the Orange Bowl and some other Canes memorabilia that I have collected over the years. Any time we have a dress-down day at the office, I proudly sport my Canes gear...much to the dismay of my colleagues that are ‘Noles and Gators. I try to get to as many games as I can during the season. This year, I will definitely be at this weekend’s game at Georgia Tech and the October 6th game in Chicago against Notre Dame. Hopefully, I can get to at least one additional game, preferably a home game. Nothing beats a tailgate in Miami with my favorite Canes.” Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? “Of course! The 2004 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl was pretty amazing. Being here in Atlanta that week before the game was a lot of fun, but the game itself was incredible. When Devin Hester ran back a blocked field goal to score a touchdown in the first half, the Canes sideline and fans went nuts. It was awesome! Some other memories that stand out include tailgates in lot SW1 at the OB, and my first game as a Cane - the 2004 game against Florida State, an overtime win against the ‘Noles. It doesn’t get much better than that! Go Canes!” 22

Thunder & Lightning Senior Mike James and freshman Duke Johnson the 1-2 running combo They’ve combined for 567 and Miami’s 636 net rushing yards on 87 carries through four games...And, senior RB Mike James and true freshman RB Duke Johnson are becoming the perfect complement to one another. The lightning-quick Johnson, who has already collected two ACC Rookie of the Week honors this season, has amassed 320 yards and four rushing TDs on 40 carries, while bruising James has 247 yards and three touchdowns on 47 carries. During the first three games, James did not find the end zone, but it was what he did away from the football that helped the Hurricanes offense the most. A one-time fullback, James has made timely blocks in the backfield, allowing the shifty and elusive Johnson to get to the outside or find a seam. James’ hard work and perseverence paid off during Miami’s 42-36 come-from-behind OT win at Georgia Tech. The Hanies City, Fla., product rushed for 89 yards and three TDs, including the gamewinning 25-yard scamper in OT. The duo has combined for 160-plus rushing yards in three of Miami’s first four games. In the Hurricanes’ 41-32 season-opening win at Boston College, Johnson rushed for 135 yards, while James added 54 yards. Two weeks later, the pair amassed 171 yards — Johnson 94 yards and James 77 yards (both season highs). James, who was one of 11 FBS players selected to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, has 966 career rushing yards to

his credit and needs 34 more to reach 1,000yard mark for his career. Johnson’s production has not been limited to the backfield, however. In arguably his most electifying play to date, Johnson took a B-CU kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in his home debut. Nearly half of his 638 all-purpose yards (305) have come via kickoff returns. James is second to Johnson with 183 all-purpose yards. OFFENSE Although the duo has 10 of Miami’s 16 TDs through four games, the Hurricanes offense has not been limited to solely to the backfield pair. Sophomore WR Phillip Dorsett nearly doubled his career production in one game at Georgia Tech, setting career highs with nine receptions and 184 yards, hauling in a 65yard TD catch. In that same game, junior QB Stephen Morris threw for a career-high 436 yards, the fifth-most yards in a single game by a UM QB in program history. DEFENSE Miami has forced six turnovers through four games — three interceptions (one on special teams) and three fumbles. Redshirt junior DL Shayon Green leads the Canes with 28 tackles, while sophomore DL Anthony Chickillo has a team-best 4.0 tackles-for-loss and is tied for the team lead with 2.0 sacks (DL Tyriq McCord).

He is the sixth Miami Hurricane to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, joining Robert Bass (1993), Tony Coley (1996), Ryan Clement (1997), Nate Books (1998) and Joaquin Gonzalez (2001). Fans can vote for Mike as the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Captain on ESPN.com.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS Miami has had players record 4 TDs in back-to-back games. First, freshman RB Duke Johnson had four scores in Miami’s 38-10 home win against BethuneCookman (2 rush, 1 rec, 1 ret). Then, senior RB Mike James scored four times — three rushing, one receiving — and scored game-winning TD in OT to give Miami a 42-36 win at Georgia Tech.

DID U KNOW? Since joining the ACC in 2004, Miami is 36-3 when scoring 30+ points in a game and has won five straight, including three wins in 2012.

SCHEDULE AND RESULTS

Off to Strong Start Canes 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Highlighted by a victory over No. 6 Florida State in front of a record crowd and national television audience (ESPNU), the UM volleyball team has gotten off to a strong start in 2012. The team most recently split a pair of matches in Virginia over the weekend and sits at 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. “We have seen a lot of great things, but also a lot that we can build on,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said regarding the season so far. “We are excited about playing ACC opponents from here on out. Every conference match is competitive and every venue presents a challenge. You have to play well in order to win.” The Hurricanes finished the non-conference portion of the schedule at 8-2, including a championship at the Hurricane Invitational to start the season. In addition, UM went 2-1 at both the Redbird Classic (Illinois State) and the Louisville Tournament.

Mixed in the middle, UM pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history against the Seminoles. It was the first victory ever over a top-10 opponnent. After dropping the first set, the Canes rallied to win the next three in front of a record 1,129 fans at the Knight Sports Complex. Individually, junior outside hitter Taylor Hollins has emerged as a weapon with 171 kills so far (3.56 k/s) and has 11 double-doubles this season. Senior Nrithya Sundararaman has averaged 10.84 assists per set as the primary setter and junior libero Ryan Shaffer leads with 229 digs. Miami will return home this weekend to take play Duke on Friday and Wake Forest on Sunday. It will be Family Weekend, as the football team will play at home on Saturday. The first 300 fans attending the match against the Blue Devils will received a free drawstring bag.

Miami Rebounds Hurricanes’ defense impressive through opening half of ‘12 After finishing its most recent, season-long homestand with a 2-2 record, the Miami Hurricanes have opened their season in impressive fashion with a 5-4-1 record marked by close losses to talented competition. During the homestand, the Hurricanes fell to No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 5 Duke by a combined two goals - including a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime decision in an ESPN3 match-up against the Blue Devils. The Hurricanes, boasting 14 newcomers on its roster for the season, had yet another hero emerge in that contest in freshman Ava Ambrose. The forward scored her first two career goals against Duke to force the game into an extra period. Ambrose, a native of Omaha, Neb., helped overcome deficits in the 80th minute and the 90th minute before the team fell 3-2 in overtime. “I think anyone that’s seen us play, I think the one thing they can always say is we’re a pretty tough team and that we don’t quit,” head coach Tom Anagnost said after the tough loss. “They fought and clawed and came back twice.

We had some chances earlier to tie it or even win the game.” Ambrose became the fifth freshman and seventh newcomer to score through the first nine matches of the season. Alongside fellow freshmen Jasmine Paterson and Ally Andreini, the Hurricanes’ offense has received a boost from newcomers in 2012. “Our team knows we’re a little more able to compete than we were last year, and we’re just going to get better,” Anagnost said. The Hurricanes rebounded with a big win over visiting UTSA, aided by a 75th-minute goal from veteran Kate Howarth to earn the victory. With the help of sophomore goalkeeper Emily Lillard, the Hurricanes have allowed more than one goal only once this season, a mark that includes five shutouts. Lillard (3-4-1) helped guide the Hurricanes to their fifth straight non-conference win. “The ACC is the most unbelievable, competitive conference in the United States and you get the best of the best every single week - it tests you,” Anagnost said.

Pezzulo ACC Performer of the Week

Junior Sean Pezzulo of the University of Miami cross country team has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. In the first meet of the season, he finished fourth overall in the 8K race (26:58.23) to help lead UM to fourth place at the USF Invitational. Prior to Pezzulo, Connor Adams was the last Hurricane to win this honor on Oct. 25, 2010. “It is great accomplishment to have Sean as Performer of the Week,” assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths said. “He has worked very hard this summer and I look forward to more great things from him.” A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Pezzulo’s career-best time came last season at the ACC Championships (26:28.7). The UM cross country teams will next run at the Mountain Dew Invitational at the University of Florida on Saturday, Sept. 15. A total of 22 teams are set to compete in the meet. University of Miami Traditions UM Sports Hall of Fame highlights of some of Miami’s famous traditions

SCHOOL COLORS The University adopted the colors of orange, green and white as their official school colors in 1926. They represent the colors of the orange tree: orange for the fruit, green for the leaves, and white for the blossoms. Miami is one of only a handful of schools with three official colors. HURRICANES NICKNAME It began in controversy. Some reports say the 1927 football team held a team meeting to select Hurricanes, hoping they would sweep away opponents just as the devastating storm did on September 16, 1926. Another version holds that Miami News columnist Jack Bell asked end Porter Norris of the 1926 team what the team should be called. Told that the local dignitaries and University officials wanted to name the team for a local flora or fauna, Norris said the players wouldn’t stand for it and suggested “Hurricanes” since the opening game had been postponed by such a storm. From time to time, opposition has arisen to the name that would “reinforce Miami’s negative reputation as a weather-beaten community living constantly under the threat of destruction.” But as one UM official rationalized in the 60’s, “Does anyone think Chicago is overrun by bears just because the town has a football team by that name?” WAR CANOE TROPHY An authentic Seminole war canoe, hand carved and painted by Seminole Indians from a 200-year-old Everglades cypress tree felled by lighting, was donated on behalf of the city of Hollywood in 1955 as a trophy for the annual football game between Miami and Florida. The canoe symbolized the magnificent spirit and fighting determination traditional of the independent Florida Seminole tribe that was displayed annually between the Hurricanes and Gators. Today, the canoe is on permanent display at the UM Sports Hall of Fame.

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships. Johnson ACC Rookie of the Week

University of Miami freshman RB Duke Johnson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is Johnson’s second Rookie of the Week honor of the season. Johnson accounted for a season-high 246 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in Miami’s 38-10 homeopening win Sept. 15 over Bethune-Cookman. The freshman rushed 14 times for a career-high 94 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson posted three receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown - a 50-yard TD reception in the third quarter. His first-quarter 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown is tied for the eighth-longest in UM history and was the first kickoff return for a TD by a Hurricane since Lamar Miller in 2010.
