UM Mourns Loss of Longtime Coach Bill Diaz

Bill Diaz, who served as the University of Miami swimming & diving coach for 14 illustrious seasons, passed away at the age of 89 at his Palmetto Bay home. “I was saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Diaz,” Athletics Director Blake James said. “Bill established our swimming & diving program as a model for others to follow, and turned the University of Miami into an epicenter for national and international swimming.” Diaz, who was tapped into Iron Arrow – the highest honor attained at the University of Miami – in 1975, coached the Hurricanes to four top 10 NCAA Championships finishes and ended in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships 11 times. His men’s teams won three national independent championships (1974, 1977, 1982), while his 1975 women’s squad won six individual national titles – the most ever by a Hurricanes team in a single year. Under Diaz’ direction in 1973, Miami became the first college in the United States to offer women swimming scholarships. Two years later, the Hurricanes women’s swimming & diving team won the first of back-to-back AIAW National Championships. The UM Sports Hall of Fame inductee coached 55 collegiate All-Americans during his time with the Hurricanes. In 2007, the University of Miami and the City of Coral Gables recognized him with the installation of an electronic scoreboard at UM’s Norman Whitten Student Union Pool and named it in his honor. Diaz’ accomplishments on the international scene were equally as impressive. He served on staff or managed five USA National swimming teams, including the USA team that took first at the World Aquatic Championships in 1982. Prior to his years as head coach of the Hurricanes, Bill had a very successful career as a high school coach. Between 1953 and 1970, Bill guided first Miami Jackson High and then Miami Springs High to a total of nine state titles. “On behalf of the University of Miami family, I extend our thought and prayers to the Diaz family. Bill was and always will be a member of the Hurricanes family and his legacy will live on through the young men and women who represent our great institution.“ Bill is survived by Martha, his wife of 66 years, his three sons Bill, John and Rick, their wives Rosana, Tracey and Chrissy, his sister Alice Elmore, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Oak Lawn Memorial North, located at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family is request contributions in Coach Diaz’ honor be directed to the UM Sports Hall of Fame, in care of Executive Director John Routh: UM Sports Hall of Fame 5821 San Amaro Drive Coral Gables, FL 33146

President Shalala to Step Down

University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala announced that she is stepping down at the end of the 2014-2015 university year (summer 2015) after 14 years of distinguished service. President Shalala has also served as a professor of political science, teaching one of the University’s largest and most popular courses focusing on the politics and economics of health care, featuring such special guest lecturers as former U.S. President Bill Clinton. She plans to return to the faculty as a professor of political science and health policy. “President Shalala’s tenure as the University of Miami’s fifth president has been a fortuitous and celebrated circumstance of the right leader at the right place at the right time,” noted Stuart A. Miller, Chair of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, UM law school alumnus, and Chief Executive Officer of Lennar Corp. “As we look ahead to building on President Shalala’s significant accomplishments, we will be appointing a Presidential Search Committee to be chaired by Richard D. Fain, Vice Chair of the Board and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. This will be an inclusive process and will seek valuable input from the greater University of Miami community,” said Miller. UM’s current era was launched in June 2001 with the naming of Shalala as the fifth president in the history of the institution. Her presidency has been marked by accelerated progress in all key areas—teaching and learning, the discovery of new knowledge, the delivery of cutting-edge medical care, service to the region and beyond, and fundraising. Under her leadership, UM rapidly advanced into the top-tier of American higher education, joining the nation’s finest research universities. Few individuals are as accomplished or as dedicated to public service as President Shalala, who commands more than 40 years of experience as a professor, scholar, and administrator. She has held the position of Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and President of Hunter College of the City University of New York. One of the most honored academics of her generation, she has been elected to seven national academies: The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the American Philosophical Society; the National Academy of Education; the National Academy of Social Insurance; the National Academy of Public Administration; and the National Academy of Political and Social Science. Under the Clinton administration President Shalala served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services for eight years, the longest serving HHS Secretary in U.S. history. In 2007, President George W. Bush handpicked President Shalala to co-chair with Senator Bob Dole the Commission on Care for Returning Wounded Warriors. In June of 2008, he presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian award.

Better Seats, More Games, Lower Prices

The best deal on tickets for Miami’s rivalry game vs. Florida State on Nov. 15 is still a Season Ticket or Two-Game Mini-Plan from the official Hurricane Ticket Office. As of September 23, ticket prices on the secondary market (such as StubHub.com) for the FSU game alone exceed the price of a TwoGame Mini-Plan, which includes FSU plus the Homecoming game vs. North Carolina and a Miami hat. For the best value, and to get the best seats, season tickets still include the remaining five home games on the schedule. Season ticket prices available through the Hurricane Ticket Office are comparable to the single-game price of purchasing just Florida State through the secondary market. Waters Makes Highlights in his Hometown

By David Villavicencio, HurricaneSports.com The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Each week in the 2014 season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is on Homestead, Fla., native Herb Waters. The last time Herb Waters faced the Duke Blue Devils, the Homestead, Fla., native was practically a human highlight reel. Waters had a career-high nine catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s game at Wallace Wade Stadium. Then a sophomore, Waters tallied just his second career 100-yard receiving game against a talented Blue Devils defense. But making big plays has always come naturally to Waters. A year ago, he made the crowd at Sun Life Stadium roar after a touchdown in Miami’s 21-16 win over the rival Florida Gators. He also totaled 112 all-purpose yards on two receptions and one carry in the 2013 season opener against FAU. His 63-yard touchdown run against the Owls was a career-best. Waters also enjoyed big games against Wake Forest and USF, finishing the season ranked fourth on the team with 28 receptions and 406 receiving yards and third with five receiving touchdowns. Prior to his productive sophomore campaign, Waters made an impact as a true freshman. He played in all 12 games, starting Miami’s final two contests, and finished the year with 10 catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Waters, who made his first catch as a Hurricane in Week 2 of the 2012 season against Kansas State, developed significantly over the course of his first season. That maturation helped the talented receiver catch four balls for a career-high 130 yards and a touchdown against USF. A week later, Waters caught a 65-yard touchdown against Duke in the season finale. Even dating back to his days as a standout player at Homestead High School, Waters was always making noise on the field. As a senior, Waters scored 10 touchdowns while contributing on offense, defense and special teams. As a receiver, Waters had 23 catches for 385 yards. He picked off two passes while playing defensive back and returned five punts for touchdowns. Waters comes from the same high school that produced safety JoJo Nicolas, pass rusher Marcus Robinson and two-time national champion and former linebackers coach Micheal Barrow. The 6-foot-2 receiver has made plays at Miami like Nicolas, Robinson and Barrow did before him. This season, Waters has a team-high six catches for 61 yards in the season opener and also contributed in wins over Florida A&M and Arkansas State. He will look to make it three consecutive years with a touchdown against Duke when the Canes host the Blue Devils Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium.

Finishing What They Started

With their competitive playing days behind them, former Hurricane student-athletes are returning to the Coral Gables campus to complete their degrees, earning the one tool that will help them succeed for their rest of their lives. By Robert C. Jones Jr., UM News It was a promise Octavia Blue made to herself. Once she had grabbed her last rebound, blocked her last shot, or scored the last three-pointer of a professional basketball career that spanned nine years, she would return to the University of Miami campus to earn the one thing that would sustain her for the rest of her life: a college degree. “I didn’t go to UM just to play basketball, and obviously for me to attain some of the goals I wanted in life I needed a degree,” said Blue, who was drafted 15th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 1998, becoming the first Miami women’s basketball player to make it to the WNBA. “It’s a great league, but it’s not one where I was going to be filthy rich and wouldn’t have to work again. I owed it to myself to get my degree.” Blue did just that, earning a bachelor of science in sociology and subsequently landing a position as an assistant on the Miami women’s basketball squad, where she now works with head coach Katie Meier to inspire young women to use education as a tool to advance. Blue is among a growing number of former UM student-athletes who, for various reasons, left school without completing their degrees but are now returning to finish what they started. Helping them accomplish that goal is the University of Miami Athletics Degree Completion Program, an initiative that invites former scholarship athletes to return to the U to complete their education, providing them with tuition reimbursement. “While we want our student-athletes to compete at the highest level, we also want them to achieve academically, whether it’s going for a Rhodes scholarship or trying to get into medical or law school,” said David Wyman, associate athletic director for academic services and assistant dean of undergraduate education. “A future in professional sports is guaranteed to no one. Only a select few make it, and when they do, it doesn’t last forever. They must be able to transition into something else, and a college degree gives them that opportunity.” Blue knows that better than anyone. After her pro career ended, she wanted to go into coaching, but she needed a college degree to land a job with a Division I program. She emailed UM President Donna E. Shalala for help. “She stepped right in and helped make it all happen, making sure the right people got in touch with me about finishing school,” Blue said of Shalala’s assistance. Since Shalala began enthusiastically supporting the athletic degree completion program in 2006, at least 18 other ’Canes have come back to complete their studies. Many have been baseball players, like catcher Charles Johnson, who departed early for the Major Leagues, eventually helping the Florida Marlins win a World Series. But they come from all sports, from football and basketball to tennis and track and field. Wyman said the program solidifies UM’s already strong reputation as a school committed to the success of its student-athletes on and off the playing field. Last year, Miami recorded a 92 percent graduation success rate for its athletes, placing it in a tie for third among Atlantic Coast Conference schools and tenth overall among FBS institutions. Director of Athletics Blake James calls the initiative a trendsetter at a time when the NCAA and schools are being criticized for not doing more for student-athletes. “We’re definitely at the forefront,” said James. “Given everything that is going on publicly regarding scholarships, potential pay for play, and all the things playing out in the court system, we’re seeing more and more institutions step up and provide this opportunity for their student-athletes, which again I think is such a great credit to the vision and commitment President Shalala has had for studentathletes at the University of Miami for so many years.” It was Shalala who helped Audra Cohen return to UM to finish her degree after the former NCAA singles champion and No. 1-ranked collegiate women’s tennis player in the U.S. left Miami to turn pro in 2007. “Without her initiative in helping me, I would be three steps behind in life,” said Cohen, who is now head coach of the women’s tennis team at the University of North Florida. “I am forever grateful for what Miami has helped me accomplish.”

Savanah Leaf Named Senior CLASS Candidate

Savanah Leaf was announced as one of 30 NCAA women’s volleyball student-athletes selected as candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. “It is great to see Savanah get recognized for her accomplishments in the classroom, on the court and in life,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “Savanah is a great representative of our program and University. She is smart, determined and will be successful as a volleyball player, as well as in life after volleyball.” A Preseason All-ACC selection, Leaf ranks 24th in the nation with 4.90 points/set and 37th in the country with 4.20 kills/set. She leads Miami with 84 kills on the season and ranks third in the ACC in kills/set. “I feel really honored,” Leaf said. “I really appreciate that someone would select me for this. It motivates me to work even harder this year.” Leaf, who finished one block short of a triple-double against TCU last weekend, was a 2013 All-ACC and All-ACC Academic honoree. The San Anselmo, Calif., native is one of only three student-athletes from the ACC selected as candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. “Savanah is great ambassador and leader for our all of our student-athletes and University,” Associate AD for Academic Services David Wyman said. “She has been excellent in the classroom and exemplary in the sport of volleyball. I am tremendously proud of her and this nomination is fitting for all she has and will accomplish as she completes her collegiate career.” An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total studentathlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Of the 30 candidates, 23 have grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, including 15 with GPAs of 3.5 or higher. There are five returning American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans, and 10 are members of teams ranked in the AVCA top 25 coaches preseason poll. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December. For more information on all the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.

Cross Country Starts ‘14 Strong The University of Miami cross country program has opened the 2014 campaign in strong form. The Canes have competed in three races, showing improvement in each competition. Miami’s men have been led by senior Douglas Dourado, while the women has been paced by sophomore Gabrielle Hesslau. Dourado and Hesslau each opened the 2014 season with a victory, winning the men’s and women’s 5K at the FAU Invitational on August 29. “It was good to see Gabby and Douglas step up and win the individual titles today,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said after the victories. “They have continued to take strides forward since the spring.” Dourado won the men’s 5K with a time of 16:27.1. The senior was one of four Canes to finish in the Top 5 on the men’s side, joined by freshman Adam George (third, 16:34.7), sophomore Jon Keller (fourth, 16:41.0), and freshman Sean Grossman (fifth, 16:44.3). “The men ran controlled for the first two miles,” Griffiths said. “I would have liked to keep the pack spread closer until the finish.” Hesslau crossed the finish line first in the women’s 5K, posting a time of 19:55.7. The sophomore was joined in the Top 5 by freshman Mulloy Manning, who placed fourth with a time of 21:28.8. “We were without several of the top ladies this evening, but this allowed younger runners like Mulloy to shine,” Griffiths said. A week later, Miami was back in action at the USF Invitational and the Hurricanes showed improvement from their season-opening race. AJ Ricketts and Dourado placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the men’s 8K, while Hesslau finished ninth in the women’s 5K. “I am pleased with the team’s effort and progress since last week,” Griffiths said. “AJ ran a great race today to lead the men. been getting better each week.” Ricketts completed the 8K course in 27.10.27 to lead the Hurricane men. Dourado followed two seconds later, finishing in 27:12.74. JaCee Jarnagin (11th), Adam George (13th), Jon Keller (14th), Sean Grossman (15th) and Kevin Marsh (16th) gave the Canes six finishers among the Top 16. For the second consecutive week, Hesslau led the women’s squad. The sophomore crossed the finish line in 19:01.83. Freshman Mulloy Manning was Miami’s second woman to cross the finish line, followed by Frida Carlsson, Kelly Williamson, Janine Depree, and Megan Brown. Miami’s biggest test to date came at the Mountain Dew Invitational last weekend, but Dourado and sophomore Frida Carlsson stepped up to lead their respective teams. Dourado was Miami’s top finisher on the men’s side, crossing the finish line in 25:51.65. He was followed by sophomore Jon Keller (25:57.71) and junior Kevin Marsh (26:34.27) to round out Miami’s top three times. “For Doug and Jon to break the 26-minute barrier was huge for their confidence.” Griffiths said. “They have been putting the work and finally reaped the results.” Carlsson was the top Hurricane on the women’s side. The sophomore finished the 5K in 19:34.34, while freshman Mulloy Manning crossed the finish line shortly thereafter, finishing in 20:14.06. Senior Julia Koch rounded out Miami’s top 3, finishing in 20:19.12. “Frida has continued to improve each week,” Griffiths said. Miami will race again on Oct. 4, traveling to Bethlehem, Pa., to compete in the Paul Short Run. The Hurricanes will spend the majority of October in training. Miami will compete at the Westminster Academy Invitational on Oct. 25 to see where the team stands heading into the ACC Championships on Oct. 31.

Wagner & Lileikite Win Doubles Title Stephanie Wagner and Lina Lileikite beat teammates and third-ranked doubles team Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno in the orange doubles championship of the Miami Fall Invite last weekend. In their second win against a top-10 doubles team in two days, Wagner and Lileikite handed Miami’s top doubles team an 8-5 loss. In the green doubles bracket, freshmen Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan fell to Reka Muller and Jennifer Pfeifler in the final by a score of 8-6. In the consolation third place match, USF’s Laura Argente and Hailey Grillo defeated Canes’ freshman Silvia Fuentes and Judith Bohnenkamp 8-6. Moving into singles, Wagner defeated Auburn’s Paula de Man and Riobueno took down Flickinger to set up a Miami vs. Miami match in the orange semifinal. In both of their final singles matches of the tournament, Wagner bested Riobueno 6-3, 6-1. Albuquerque defeated Auburn’s Andie Dikosavljevic in straight sets to advance herself to the semfinal of the green singles draw. There, she found herself down 4-0 in the opening frame to USF’s Olga Martinez. The senior from Brazil battled back to win the first set 7-5 before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second. Lileikite finished her final day of the tournament in even better fashion than she started it. The junior picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win against Auburn’s Michala Kucharova to earn a spot in the bottom half of the orange semfinal. Up against 36th-ranked Pleun Burgmans, the Latvia native won a tight first set 7-5 before finalizing a 6-4 win in the second frame. Miami’s freshman Zhang finished off the tournament with two impressive singles victories. In the quarterfinal of the orange singles bracket, Zhang defeated Pitt’s Amanda Wickman in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Later on in the afternoon, she handed Auburn’s Jennifer Pfeifler a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Another Hurricane freshman, Judith Bohnenkamp, was taken down by Pittsburgh’s Katherine Castro 6-0, 6-3. In her second match of the day, Bohnenkamp fell in a tough match 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 against Auburn’s MK Lewis. Miami’s other freshman, Sinead Lohan, was defeated by Auburn’s Burgmans in her only match of the day. In the quarterfinal of the green singles draw, Miami’s Fuentes was defeated by USF’s Martinez by a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 score. She would go on to bounce back just a few hours later, defeating Auburn’s Dikosaljevic in a three-setter, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Albuquerque/Riobueno Ranked No. 3 Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno checked in at No. 3 in the Division I Women’s Preseason Doubles Rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Monday. Three Hurricane singles players also appeared in the preseason poll—Stephanie Wagner at No. 18, Lina Lileikite at No. 71 and Albuquerque at No. 111. The Canes top doubles duo finished the season ranked sixth in the nation after advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA doubles championship in Athens, Ga. With Albuquerque announcing mid-summer that she would return for her final year of eligibility, it comes as no surprise to see the duo ranked so high. “Starting out top-20 in the country for Steffi and No. 3 in the country for Monique and Clementina, I think it says a lot about what they’ve been doing these last couple years,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “If we look at where they came in as freshman, these kids were not even on the map in terms of rankings and respect given around the country. What this is showing is that as a doubles team, they’re a contender for one of the top spots in college tennis. When you start off in the preseason rankings so high, it’s a huge responsibility. We will have a target on our chests and all of these other kids are going to be out to beat them, week in and week out. We’re looking forward to the future and are expecting big things from them.” Albuquerque and Riobueno, named an All-American doubles tandem this past spring, appeared in every poll of 2014 while posting a 23-4 overall record and a 10-1 mark in ACC play. At the No. 1 spot, the Canes’ duo finished 15-3 and went 6-2 at No. 2.

Lamar Miller (Miami Dolphins) – 15 carries, 108 yards, four receptions, 24 yards Dolphins third-year running back Lamar Miller delivered the second 100-yard rushing performance of his career in Sunday’s disappointing loss to Kansas City, needing just 15 carries to top the century mark. Miller, who averaged 7.2 yards per carry, ripped off a season-long carry of 24 yards against the Chiefs defense in the 34-15 defeat. With starting running back Knowshon Moreno missing due to an elbow injury suffered in Week 2, Miller figured to get an increased workload. The Killian HS alum delivered in Moreno’s absence, and is averaging 5.8 yards per carry through the first three weeks. Miller is on pace for the first 1,000-yard season of his young career.

Smith Named to 2014 ACC Legends Class

University of Miami linebacker Darrin Smith was among those named to the 2014 Class of Legends for its 10th Annual Dr Pepper Football Championship Game, which will be played in Charlotte, N.C. on December 6. Smith, one of the top linebackers in program history, keyed a Hurricane defense that allowed Miami to win a pair of national championships (1989, 1991) under coach Dennis Erickson during his time in Coral Gables. Along with Jessie Armstead and Micheal Barrow, he composed one third of the linebacker corps for Miami known as the “Bermuda Triangle”. As a junior he earned first-team All-America honors by the Football News and second-team by the Associated Press while also named co-Defensive Player of the Year in the BIG EAST. He finished his career as the fourth-leading tackler in UM history. He was named a first-team All-American by UPI as a senior in 1992. During his four varsity seasons, Miami compiled a spectacular 44-4 record. An excellent student, Smith also became UM’s first National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete recipient. A second-round pick and the 54th overall selection by Dallas in the 1993 NFL Draft, he played 12 seasons in the NFL, the first four with the Cowboys (1993-96) where he helped Dallas to triumphs in Super Bowls XXVIII and XXX. He also played one year with Philadelphia (1997), two seasons with Seattle (1998-99) and five years with New Orleans. In his NFL career, he compiled 749 tackles, 24.0 sacks and 11 interceptions. A native of Miami, he currently resides in Pembroke Pines where he owns and operates a real estate investment and development company. He also serves as the team chaplain for the Miami Dolphins. The Legends are each selected by their respective schools and will be honored during this year’s Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game weekend. They will be honored at the ACC Night of Legends sponsored by the Belk Bowl on Friday, Dec. 5, and on Saturday Dec. 6, during ceremonies at Bank of America Stadium for the 10th Annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship, which will be nationally televised with either a 7:45 pm (ESPN) or 8 p.m. (ABC) kickoff. The group of 14 former gridiron standouts from current ACC schools includes a former ACC Football Player of the Year; an ACC Defensive Player of the Year, 12 former All-Americas, including 10 first-team and six consensus All-American honorees and 12 players who combined for 118 years in the National Football League. Twelve of the Legends were drafted into the NFL, including nine first- orsecond-round draft choices. Smith joins Chris Snee (Boston College), Donnell Woolford (Clemson), Chris Castor (Duke), Derrick Brooks (Florida State), John Davis (Georgia Tech), Frank Minnifield (Louisville), Greg Ellis (North Carolina), Jesse Campbell (NC State), Hugh Green (Pittsburgh), Art Monk (Syracuse), George Welsh (Virginia), Jake Grove (Virginia Tech) and Alan White (Wake Forest).

2014 MEN’S TENNIS SCHEDULE

Lomacki Rides Summer Success Into Freshman Season According to NCAA standards, University of Miami men’s tennis player Piotr Lomacki must be listed as a true freshman. But after a summer of competition in Europe, the Polish transplant has experience comparable to that of an upperclassman. Playing in 11 tournaments spanning six countries, Lomacki finished with 14 wins, defeating four players ranked ahead of him. At his first tournament match in March, the ATP ranked him the No. 1,204 singles player in the world. By the end of the summer, Lomacki jumped 410 spots to his current position at No. 794 and also makes him the No. 1 junior player in Poland. For Lomacki, the ranking has become nothing more than a number. Over the summer, he learned to ignore the hype surrounding either his opponents or himself and retain his focus on the match. “You can beat everybody,” Lomacki explained. “The ranking is not playing and it is just a number. If you are playing a top-five team, it does not matter. It just depends on the day, your actual form.” Despite his personal disregard for rankings, Lomacki’s recent success has not gone unnoticed. Entering his first season, he was named the No. 6 freshman/newcomer in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Head coach Mario Rincon had high praise for the newcomer, describing his game as all-around, highlighting his power and quickness on the court. “He’s a fighter,” Rincon elaborated. “He has a lot of confidence in himself. He’s got a lot of ability and at the same time he can improve in every aspect of his game.” Growing pains are anticipated as Lomacki transitions into the college game format. The most glaring challenge for him will be court texture, as 33

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

Lomacki competed on exclusively clay courts this summer. Excluding an upcoming clay tournament, every tournament and match this season for the Hurricanes is on hard court. Along with going to class and academic commitments, for the first time in his career Lomacki will be training as a member of team, rather than just as an individual in tournaments. “It’s going to be an adjustment for him. The style of play is different on hard courts and also the team environment,” Rincon said. “He’s only been playing tennis tournaments and training by himself. When you have to combine going to class, doing conditioning and having to be with the team almost all of the time, it’s an adjustment. It will take him a little while to get used to it.” Since arriving in Coral Gables, Lomacki has abandoned his ranking and accomplishments in Europe, and has embraced his role as a member of the Hurricanes men’s tennis team. “Now I am just part of the team,” Lomacki said. “I am going to do everything in my power to put the Hurricanes among the best teams in the country.” Rincon foresees Lomacki becoming the type of player than can have an immediate positive impact on the team and program. With Lomacki’s pedigree, the expectation of winning is growing, not only for himself but the team as a whole. “We have high goals for him. We have high goals for our team,” Rincon said. “He knows he’s one of the promising players we have here. He can become a great college player and make a mark.” by Eric Todoroff, UM Communications Assistant

Recruiting Class Ranked Among Top 20 by CBN

The Miami Hurricanes baseball recruiting class for the 2014-15 season was ranked among the top 20 in the country by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the publication announced. The Hurricanes’ 14-member class, comprised of 13 freshmen and one junior college transfer, was tied for No. 20 nationwide. The class continues a long stretch of recruiting success for Miami, which featured a top 10-rated class in each of the last two seasons by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. Three players from the class were selected in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft: junior infielder George Iskenderian (Englewood Cliffs, N.J., Indian River State College), freshman outfielder Carl Chester (Longwood, Fla., Lake Brantley HS) and freshman pitcher Michael Mediavilla (Hialeah, Fla., Mater Academy). Miami’s class was tied with Florida State for the third-best class in the Atlantic Coast Conference, trailing only Virginia (No. 9) and North Carolina (No. 11). The class will be joining a group of returners who helped lead the Hurricanes to the 2014 ACC Regular Season Championship – the second in program history. Joining Miami’s three selections from the June MLB Draft in the signing class are: Ryan Alvarez (Miami, Fla., Christopher Columbus HS), Rafa Manau (Weston, Fla., St. Thomas Aquinas), Nick Bottari (Wading River, N.Y., Montverde Academy), Peter Crotcitto (Palm City, Fla., South Fork HS), Daniel Epstein (Weston Fla., University School), Andy Honiotes (Geneva, Ill., Geneva Community HS), Jesse Lepore (Beverly Hills, Fla., Trinity Catholic), Devin Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla., Coral Springs Christian Academy), Keven Pimentel (Wading River, N.Y., Montverde Academy), Justin Smith (St. John’s, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) and Luke Spangler (Cape Coral, Fla., Cape Coral HS). Miami opens fall practice on Oct. 20. All practices will take place at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field and are open to the public. Canes Open ACC Play With its challenging nonconference schedule in the books, the Miami Hurricanes women’s soccer team embarked on its ACC slate beginning with a road trip to No. 2 Virginia at Klockner Stadium. Miami’s nonconference calendar included early tilts with two ranked in-state sides – UCF and Florida – as well as a trip to the Nike Portland Invitational for matches against previously ranked Portland and Washington. The Canes topped 2013 NCAA Tournament team Jacksonville and Stetson during a four-match homestand. Head coach Mary-Frances Monroe feels confident that the team’s string of tough opponents has prepared them for a four-match homestand, which opens with matchups with the Orange (Sept. 24) and Louisville (Sept. 28). No. 5 Florida State (Oct. 4) and No. 3 Virginia Tech (Oct. 9) arrive the following week. “Having a challenging schedule early on in the season has prepared us for the remainder of our

conference games,” Monroe said. “We have to continue to be sharp and do the small things right.” Each of Miami’s last three games – including matchups with Portland and Washington, as well as the team’s recent trip to Charlottesville – have been played in front of hostile crowds of over 2,000 fans. The challenging atmosphere - coupled with particularly strong showings against Portland and Virginia - has Monroe’s Hurricanes feeling confident. And with only one home match remaining in its regular season schedule after this homestand comes to a conclusion on Oct. 9, Miami is embracing the challenge. “It’s great to be back home, especially for the next two games,” Monroe said. “We had a good week of training leading up in tomorrow’s game against the Orange. “We know what we need to execute to find success and I am excited for us to take the field.”

DID U KNOW? Miami has three multi-goal scorers through the first nine matches of the season - Erin McGovern, Jasmine Paterson and Emily Auld. Only five players did it through the entire 2013 season.

MORE ABOUT @CANESFUTBOL *In a rare feat, senior goalkeeper Emily Lillard recorded the first goal of her career against UCF earlier in the season. The Kansas native took a free kick from half field that made its way through the hands of the Knights goalkeeper. * The coaching staff’s decision to assign corner kick duties to Gianna Dal Pozzo has paid off. The sophomore leads the team with two assists and has been particularly effective on service from the flank. *A number of newcomers have made an impact in the early going. Junior transfer Natalie Moik scored a pretty goal against Virginia, Ronnie Johnson has served as a key target forward, and Grace Rapp has been a regular in the offensive rotation.

SCHEDULE/RESULTS (19-12)

Canes Undefeated at Home Road wins are hard to come by in any sport, so defending your home court is essential to any team’s success. The University of Miami volleyball team has done just that in nonconference play this season. The Canes are undefeated in matches played at the James L. Knight Sports Complex, sitting a perfect 5-0 at home heading into ACC play. “We take a lot of pride in playing on our own floor in front of our fans,” senior Blair Fuentez said. “It’s really important for us to play well here.” Miami hosted a pair of tournament during the nonconference portion of its 2014 schedule, the Hurricane Invitational and the Hurricane Challenge. The Canes hosted Seton Hall, Florida A&M and Florida Gulf Coast in the Hurricane Invitational on Aug. 29-30. Miami did not drop a set in the three matches it played on opening weekend, defeating Seton Hall, FAMU and FGCU in three sets each. Senior captain Savanah Leaf was a force all weekend for the Canes, helping them go undefeated in the 2014 Hurricane Invitational. The senior’s athleticism, power and versatility were evident throughout the weekend as she attacked from the outside, right side and back row. Each of her 38 thunderous kills deflated the opponent, uplifted the Canes and made the home crowd roar. She had an ace in each of the three matches and was a key part of Miami’s 3-0 start. Freshman setter Haley Templeton also made a huge impact in her Hurricane debut. The Alpharetta, Ga., native dished out 87 assists over seven sets and was a threat to attack, smashing seven kills over the course of the Hurricane Invitational. Senior Emani Sims, sophomore Kelsie Groot and junior Kalysta White also played key roles in Miami’s opening weekend. Sims was a factor at the net, recording 19 kills and 12 blocks, while Groot added 27 kills and 27 digs. White led the Canes’ back row defense with 32 digs. “It makes me feel really good to come out in our 37

first preseason tournament at home with all our fans here,” Sims said. “We just kind of wanted to bring it home. We went 2-0 to start and we wanted to bring in our third win.” The Hurricanes closed out their nonconference slate with a pair of matches in the Hurricane Challenge. Miami defeated UNCG in three sets thanks to a big performance by Templeton, who dished out 36 assists and helped the team hit .312 for the match. Junior Taylor Scott also played a huge role for Miami against the Spartans, tallying 13 kills and hitting .417 for the match. A day later, the Canes defeated the defending SEC champion Missouri Tigers, 3-1, to stay unbeaten at home and head into ACC play with a 7-4 record. “Personally, it’s probably the biggest win so far of my season here, so I’m really excited,” Scott said. “They’re a great team. Kudos to them with everything, but we played really well and I’m happy.” Scott led Miami with 15 digs and was second on the team with a season-best 18 kills. Leaf led the Miami attack with a season-best 22 kills and 14 digs. “Playing at home is a confidence builder,” Leaf said. “We have great support here. Winning at home always gives us confidence. It’s a great enviroment here and we always want to make our fans and school proud.” Sims finished the night with nine kills and four blocks, while freshman Sakile Simmons led the Hurricanes with six blocks and added six kills. Templeton distrubuted 53 assists, while Groot closed out the match with seven kills, six digs and two blocks. “Beating the No. 1 team from the SEC, that’s great,” Scott said. “Conference wise, ACC is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I’m really excited for ACC play. It’s going to be a battle.” Miami opens ACC play Friday when they host Notre Dame. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Canes Open ACC Play vs. Duke #5 Things

1 - QB Brad Kaaya is one of just 16 quarterbacks in the country with over 1,000 passing yards and 10 TDs. 2 - RB Duke Johnson moved into sixth place in program history in rushing yards (2,237) with his performance against Nebraska. 3 - QB Brad Kaaya set the true freshman record for passing yards in back-to-back weeks, including 359 against Nebraska. 4 - Miami is 10-1 in its last 11 home games played at Sun Life Stadium. 5 - Miami is tops in the ACC and No. 9 nationally in net punting, with 43.5 yards per kick.

#BYTHENUMBERS

6 - Miami’s six fumble recoveries this season rank as the sixth-best figure nationally. 147 - Rushing yards needed by Duke Johnson to move past Graig Cooper for fifth place in program history. 2 - Rushing touchdowns needed by Duke Johnson to tie former Canes running back Clinton Portis for eighth all time. 8 - Different pass-catchers who hauled in receptions in the 41-31 setback at Nebraska last Saturday. 332 - Receiving yards for senior Phillip Dorsett, tops among all Hurricane pass-catchers. 7 - Catches by senior tight end Clive Walford last weekend at Nebraska. 10 - Touchdown passes for freshman QB Brad Kaaya - the 12th-most nationwide.

KAAYA SETS FRESHMAN PASSING MARK ... AGAIN

Quarterback Brad Kaaya threw for a freshman record 359 yards in Saturday’s loss to Nebraska. His yardage total has risen in each of his last four starts (174, to 177, 342, to 359). Kaaya’s 359 passing yards surpassed the previous school standard, which he posted the week before in the Canes’ victory over Arkansas State. Over the last two weekends, only fi ve other quarterbacks have thrown for more yards than Kaaya’s 701. And each of those fi ve quarterbacks needed at least 90 pass attempts to do so; Kaaya has been called upon to throw 66 times in his last two games. Kaaya has thrown for seven touchdowns in the last two weeks; only Connor Halliday of Washington State (10), Gunner Kiel of Cincinnati (10) and Anu Solomon of Arizona (8) have passed for more TDs during that span. Through four games this season, Kaaya is one of only 16 quarterbacks in the country to throw for over 1,000 yards and 10-ormore touchdowns. He also is one of only two freshman signal-callers in the country to accomplish this feat. Kaaya leads the ACC in passing touchdowns, passing yards and passing yards per game. He’s also second in the ACC in the “points responsible for” stat.

Six Newcomers Join S&D for 2014-15 Season

University of Miami swimming & diving coaches Andy Kershaw and Randy Ableman announced the addition of six freshmen to the roster for the 2014-15 season. Divers Briadam Herrera and Wally Layland, alongside swimmers Jessica Hurley, Rebeka Repman, Julie Suarez and Tal Tahori, have joined the Hurricanes for what promises to be another exciting season in the ACC. Herrera moved to Miami with his family from Cuba five years ago, and competed locally at Gulliver Preparatory. Herrera hopes to be able to compete internationally for USA once he gains citizenship. “He’s an unbelievable talent,” Ableman said of Herrera. “It’s a great accomplishment for him to be able to come to a school like Miami and get a college education. We’re super excited. It’s not just the diving, it’s going to be great for his life; he has a very exciting future both in diving and in school.” Layland, who won first place in the 3-meter event at the 2012 USA Diving Junior National Championships, is a Hurricane legacy. Her father Lenny was also a diver at UM and is a UM Sports Hall of Fame inductee. “She was a great high school diver in Florida, and she represented the US internationally as a junior,” Ableman said. “She accomplished so much in high school. The tradition will continue with a great diving Layland here at UM.” Kershaw is equally as excited about the four swimmers who have joined the Hurricanes: Hurley, Repman, Suarez and Tahori. “This group of swimmers is not only talented, but also extremely driven,” Kershaw said. “Knowing how hungry our returnees are to improve, I think adding this class will help us take a huge step forward. We will see that first in our workouts, and have no doubt it will translate to our competitions.” Hurley, a specialist in the butterfly events, joins Miami after a standout career at nearby Fort Myers Senior High School. “As the daughter of two Hurricanes, Jessica’s excitement and enthusiasm about being a Cane is contagious,” Kershaw said. “She will be a great addition to butterfly group which will be one of our strengths this year. We have no doubt Jessica is willing to put in the work and will swim fast as a result.” Repman, who caught the eye of the coaching staff swimming for Serbia at last year’s European Championships, will serve as a key addition to the freestyle group. “Rebeka is a very driven sprint freestyler, and has had success while training in unique conditions in Serbia,” Kershaw said. “For a while this spring she was training in a canal while her pool was closed. We can’t wait to see what she can do when she has the luxury of the facilities and resources at The U.” Suarez had an impressive four-year stint at Forest Hill Community High School in West Palm Beach, where she excelled in backstroke events. She served as a team captain for her final three seasons. “Julie has all of the tools to be a great collegiate swimmer, and we can’t wait to help her develop them even further,” Kershaw said. “She has great explosion off the blocks, is great underwater and is a great athlete.” Tahori, who will provide talent and depth to the middle distance freestyle group, figures to play a key role early on in her career after swimming internationally for Israel. She competed in the renowned Maccabiah Games in 2009 and in 2013. “There is no doubt Tal will be relied on heavily in our meets,” Kershaw said. “She comes to us from Israel where she has spent the last two years in the military. She will certainly provide great maturity and perspective to the program.” Miami opens its season with the All-Florida Invite in Gainesville, Fla., from Oct. 3-5.

Dorsett Named ACC Receiver of the Week

Miami Hurricanes senior receiver Phillip Dorsett was recognized for his standout performance against Arkansas State with ACC Receiver of the Week honors. Dorsett, a Fort Lauderdale native and St. Thomas Aquinas HS alum, hauled in four passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns in Miami’s 41-20 win over the Red Wolves. The 200-yard performance was just the third in Hurricanes football history, and also marked the third most prolific yardage performance by any Miami receiver, trailing just Eddie Brown’s 220 yards (1984) and Wesley Carroll’s 208 (1990). The senior became the first receiver in the nation this season with three catches of at least 50 yards in the same game, and he became the first ACC player with two touchdown catches of at least 60 yards in the same game since Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill in September 2011.

Two weeks later, they are back at home to host Virginia Tech (Oct. 17) and Georgia Tech (Oct. 19). Hurricane Club & HOF Team Up For Golf Tourney

The UM Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Miami’s Hurricane Club are proud to announce a partnership for the 22nd Annual UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament hosted by Brett Romberg to benefit the Hurricane Club Victory Fund. The event will take place on Fri., October 10, 2014 at the beautiful Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables. The tournament begins with registration at 11 AM, which will include lunch provided by the Hole In The Wall Pub. Golfers get started with a 12:30 PM tee time on the 18 lush holes of the Biltmore Golf Course. Following the round, the Awards Dinner will be held in one of the historic Biltmore Hotel’s luxurious ballrooms. Entry fees include the golf, lunch and awards dinner, a goody bag and golf shirt. “We are excited to announce this partnership with the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame,” Athletic Director Blake James said. “Not only will this provide a great opportunity for Hurricane Club Members and Canes fans to play golf with some Hurricanes greats across all sports, but it will raise money to support our current student-athletes who will be future UM Hall of Famers. We are looking forward to a great day of golf at the Biltmore on October 10th.” The Victory Fund was established to raise revenue for the new student-athlete training table dining hall, lights for Greentree Field to be used by multiple teams, as well as the artificial football surface and the football “recovery zone” area. Romberg, a member of the 2001 National Championship team and the 2002 Dave Rimington Trophy winner as the nation’s best center, has graciously accepted an invitation to serve as the host for this year’s event. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Romberg was named a consensus All-American in 2002 and spent nine seasons in the NFL. He was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. “It’s an honor to serve as the host for this great UM event, and to know that the funds raised will help our current student-athletes makes it that much more special.” “I just hope my golf game is up to the task,” Romberg joked. “I don’t want to embarrass myself.” K.C. Jones, president of the UMMSHoF, elaborated on Romberg’s thoughts. “This is a year of new opportunity for the UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament,” said Jones, a 2008 Hall inductee and two-time Super Bowl winner with the Denver Broncos. “With our newly-forged partnership with UM Athletics, we will be raising money for scholarships through the Hurricane Club Victory Fund. We are proud of this direct contribution to the university’s current student-athletes and the next generation of UM Sports Hall of Famers. As with all of our events, our golf tournament offers Canes fans a unique opportunity to interact with some of their favorite former Canes all-stars.” Sponsorships for the golf tournament are still available for corporations and businesses. Devin Hester (Atlanta Falcons) – 62-yard return TD, 20-yard rushing TD, forced fumble & recovery Playing in his first season as a member of the Falcons, Devin Hester soared to new heights Thursday night with a two-touchdown performance. After taking his first career rush 20 yards to the endzone on a reverse play, Hester recorded a 62-yard punt return touchdown to earn himself the title as the most prolific returner of all time. The return moved Hester past Deion Sanders with his 20th career score. The punt return touchdown was the 14th of his career – four more than the next highest total in NFL history – and moved him into a tie for sixth place in all-time punt return yardage (3,317). The 32-year old shared a special moment with Sanders after the game on a postgame broadcast panel.
