From the Athletic Director

Dear Canes Family, I would like to thank you for your continued support of the University of Miami Athletics Department so far this year. The crowds at the football games have been great and I hope that you continue to come to the games and make as much noise as possible. Just as a reminder, fans can still purchase season tickets to Hurricanes football games. We still have extremely important home games left against Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech (Homecoming) and Virginia. Each game is an ACC game that we expect to win. Don’t forget that basketball season is also right around the corner. The ACC Champion men’s basketball team opens its season at the BankUnited Center on Wednesday, October 30th. Season tickets are currently on sale and we hope that we can make the BUC one of the toughest arenas in the country for visiting teams to play this season. The women’s basketball team also opens its season soon as well. On Friday, November 7th, the women’s team hosts North Florida in its home opener. Tickets are also available so come out and cheer on the women’s team as the Canes look forward to another very successful season. Thanks again for all of your support so far this year. The fans and community are what make this athletic department such a great organization to be a part of. Go Canes! Sincerely, Blake James

Miami Building Champions in the Classroom

While Miami Hurricanes teams were excelling in athletic competition during the spring 2013 semester, its student-athletes were also excelling in the classroom. Miami student-athletes posted a 3.01 semester GPA and 2.98 cumulative GPA – the highest GPA marks in UM athletics history. Nine of Miami’s 17 teams posted a spring semester GPA of 3.0 or above, while all teams finished above a 2.75. Thirteen student-athletes also recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. Nearly 200 student-athletes (180) earned at least a 3.0 semester GPA and 139 student-athletes earned Athletic Director’s Honor Roll Recognition for earning a 3.2 GPA or higher. “I am tremendously proud of our Hurricanes for setting a new standard of excellence in classroom achievement,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. The Hurricanes women’s tennis team (@HurricaneTennis) had the best GPA of any team with a 3.60 GPA – the program’s highest GPA. The Hurricanes men’s tennis team (@CanesMensTennis) had the best GPA of any men’s team with a 3.47. Miami’s women’s teams totaled a 3.23 semester GPA, finishing one one-hundredth of a point from tying its semester record of 3.24, and earned a record cumulative GPA of 3.17. On the men’s team, the Canes set a semester GPA mark with 2.83 and a cumulative GPA record of 2.81. In the latest NCAA APR report, based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years, every Miami program registered an APR score of at least 945 and no teams were subject to penalty. Six teams scored 980 or better out of a possible 1,000 points – baseball (983), men’s basketball (990), men’s tennis (993), women’s cross country (1,000), women’s golf (1,000), women’s swimming (989) and volleyball (995). Three Hurricanes teams were publicly honored for being among the top 10 percent in APR – men’s basketball, women’s cross and country and women’s golf. It marked the third consecutive year that women’s golf received an APR Public Recognition Award and the second straight year for women’s cross country, while men’s basketball earned its first public recognition. In October 2012, the University of Miami recorded a department-wide school-record Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 93 percent. As a department, Miami’s 93 percent GSR ranks fourth among ACC schools and is eighth overall among FBS schools. Overall, the University of Miami athletic department has improved from 77 to 93 percent from 2005 to 2012, a year after UM student-athletes posted a then-record 89 percent GSR in 201. UM has exceeded the NCAA average GSR in each of the last eight years. “Our record performance over the last three years continues to validate our Academic Progress Rate benchmarks as well as our Graduation Success Rate excellence,” Wyman said. “Our goals are to achieve at the highest levels and to be leaders in academic performance.” According to latest US News & World Report rankings, the University of Miami is the top academic institution in the state of Florida and ranks 47th nationally. From Chief to Cane: Allen Hurns

The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Over the course of the 2013 football season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is Miami native Allen Hurns. “Uphold the Legacy” is one of Miami head coach Al Golden’s mantras for excellence at the University of Miami. For senior wide receiver Allen Hurns, the statement rings true in more ways than one. Hurns is a product of Miami Carol City High School, historically one of the county’s top football programs. The Chiefs have produced numerous players who have gone on to collegiate and professional stardom. Carol City is especially famous for developing many athletes who went on to stardom at the University of Miami. The long list of former Chiefs who went on to become major contributors for the Hurricanes includes All-American defensive tackle Lester Williams, All-American wide receiver Santana Moss, national champion receiver Ethenic Sands, big play threat Sinorice Moss and two-time All-ACC safety Kenny Phillips. When Hurns hears “Uphold the Legacy,” he knows that goes beyond the legacy of the Miami Hurricanes. The 6-foot-3 senior wants to uphold the legacy the Moss brothers, Sands Phillips and Williams established before him as Carol City alums who went on to be standouts for the Canes. Hurns has represented his alma mater well, playing in 36 games so far in his collegiate career. As a freshman, Hurns played mostly special teams. The local product made four tackles but did not record a catch in his first year in Coral Gables. The fact that Hurns even played that first season was an accomplishment as the talented receiver was still recovering from an injury that ended his senior season at Carol City. Hurns made a name for himself as a sophomore, playing in all 12 games and making seven starts. Fully recovered from the injury that cut his final high school season short, he caught 31 passes for 415 yards and four touchdowns, all career bests. Hurns’ biggest performance that season came against No. 17 Ohio State, scoring the first two touchdowns of his career as part of a six-catch, 54-yard performance in the win over the Buckeyes. As a junior, Hurns started eight of the 11 games he appeared in, hauling in 28 passes for 314 yards and a team-leading four touchdowns. His two-touchdown effort at Virginia helped keep the Canes in a seesaw battle against the Cavaliers, while touchdowns against NC State and Virginia Tech helped Miami earn victories in each of those games. Hurns’ senior season is off to a strong start, having already caught 16 balls for 275 yards and a career-long 80-yard touchdown. Hurns’ play helped Miami jump out to a 4-0 start on the year. The veteran leader will look to continue contributing in a variety of ways as the Canes open ACC play this week against Georgia Tech.

Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) – five catches, 100 yards, one touchdown With his third-quarter touchdown in a 37-3 blowout victory over Jacksonville, Indianapolis 13year veteran Reggie Wayne continued his ascent into NFL history. Wayne, who recorded his ninth career 100-yard game against the Jaguars in the win, became just the 11th player in league history to register 11,000 receiving yards and 80 touchdown catches. Wayne also extended his personal streak to 68 straight games with at least three receptions – the longest streak since 1960 - and is just 10 shy of reaching 1,000 for his career. He ranks 12th all-time in receiving yards (13,363), ninth in receptions (990) and 22nd in touchdown receptions (80).

Hoops Coaches Honorary Captains

The University of Miami’s men’s and women’s basketball head coaches Jim Larrañaga and Katie Meier will serve as honorary captains at Saturday’s Hurricane football game against Georgia Tech. Prior to kickoff, the coaches will be present at the captain’s coin toss. The defending ACC men’s basketball champions open their schedule with an Oct. 30 exhibition match-up against Florida Tech at the BankUnited Center at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition is free to the public and a Select-a-Seat will be held for fans hoping to purchase men’s and women’s basketball season tickets. Meier, who took her team to the NCAA tournament for the third straight year in 2013, begin their season Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. against North Florida in Coral Gables

Recruiting Class Ranked Fourth-Best in Nation

In its 31st annual breakdown of college baseball’s top recruiting classes, Collegiate Baseball newspaper ranked the Miami Hurricanes’ 2013 group as the fourth-best group nationwide. The ranking is the best for a Miami Hurricanes’ class since 2006, when head coach Jim Morris’ incoming group was ranked No. 2 by the publication. “The fact is Gino [DiMare] and J.D. [Arteaga] have worked very hard on this class,” Morris said. “Gino coming back as our recruiting coordinator has had a big impact. Having such a high ranking correlates to having a good team, and I’m excited about this group of guys.” The Hurricanes class is comprised of 14 freshman and two junior college transfers. Four of Miami’s newcomers were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft: outfielder Willie Abreu (Cincinnati Reds), first baseman/pitcher Derik Beauprez (Boston Red Sox), catcher Zack Collins (Cincinnati) and outfielder Jacob Heyward (Atlanta Braves). “It’s very exciting. We always want to be ranked among the top 10 - that’s our goal every year,” DiMare said. “So to have a class ranked fourth certainly says a lot about how hard all of our coaches are working.” The newcomers will be joining a strong nucleus of returners that guided Miami to its college baseball- record 41st consecutive appearance in the NCAA postseason. “The strength of our team is our veteran pitching, but I think we have a good combination of young guys that are working hard,” Morris said. “Our new strength coach Brian Gabriel is doing a great job with them, and we have a chance to be really successful.” Despite the ranking, DiMare says the focus is on where this group ends up down the road rather than when they first arrive on campus. “We’ve got a big group of really talented players that have shown up,” DiMare. “From this stage forward, we have to develop them as much as we can. The proof is where they end up in three or four years. We have to work hard to make sure they reach their potential.” Florida State (No. 3), NC State (No. 13), North Carolina (No. 17), Virginia (No. 22), Clemson (No. 32) and Georgia Tech (No. 35) round out the ranked ACC classes.

Larrañaga Added to UM Faculty

Hurricanes men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga has been appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences at the University of Miami, the school announced Friday afternoon. “We are delighted to have an exceptional educator like Coach Larrañaga join our Department of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences,” said Dr. Isaac Prilleltensky, Dean, School of Education and Human Development. “He is a fantastic teacher on the court and in the classroom and our students stand to gain much from his experience and expertise.” Due to his head coaching responsibilities, Larrañaga will be a guest lecturer at several different classes in the School of Education and Human Development throughout the semester. “I’ve always seen myself as an educator; I graduated with a degree in education and I always planned to be a teacher,” said Larrañaga. “I’ve had the great pleasure of teaching young men the game of basketball, but I was also a member of the faculty in the school of management at George Mason University. That provided me an opportunity to interact with a large number of students and to be in a classroom environment, which I enjoy very much. Being a member of the faculty of the University of Miami School of Education and Human Development will give me the opportunity to interact with more students than ever before.” Larrañaga and the Hurricanes open the 2013-14 season with an exhibition game against Florida Tech on Oct. 30 before starting the regular season on Nov. 8 against St. Francis (N.Y.).

Williams received 17 votes from a national panel of 39 sportswriters and broadcasters to earn the award. “We are once again so proud of Riquna and her accomplishments this season,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. “She has always been a ‘game-changer’ at every level, and it is a testament to her work ethic that she continues to be one in the WNBA.” The second-year guard averaged 15.6 points in 27 games for Tulsa in 2013, including 21 games off the bench. Williams also averaged 2.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals, and burst onto the scene with a record-setting 51-point performance against San Antonio in early September. The Pahokee, Fla., native shot 17-for-28 from the field in a 98-65 win over the Silver Stars, including eight 3-point baskets, to set a single-game WNBA scoring record. The 51-point effort surpassed the previous mark of 47 set by Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi in 2006 and Seattle’s Lauren Jackson in 2007, earning her a career-first Western Conference Player of the Week Award. Williams was selected in the second round (17th overall) of the 2012 WNBA Draft, becoming the fourth player in Miami Hurricanes history to be drafted. She finished her inaugural WNBA campaign ranked third among rookies in both assists (2.1) and steals (1.55), and fourth in scoring (10.5) en route to 2012 All-Rookie honors. In recognition of her selection as Sixth Woman of the Year, Williams will receive $5,000 and a specially-designed trophy from Tiffany & Co.

Hurricanes Extend Partnership with Verizon

The University of Miami Department of Athletics and Verizon announced the continuation of its integrated corporate partnership, effective for the 2013-14 athletics season. The renewal allows Verizon to continue its exclusivity as the official wireless provider of UM Athletics. Verizon will also receive a fully integrated benefits program across all sports, including an emphasis on new opportunities that further engage the two brands, providing greater access to the Hurricanes’ fan base. In addition to continuing its traditional benefits – including the use of the university’s mark and logo, permanent venue signage, tickets, displays and hospitality – one of the main initiatives of the new agreement is to explore technology programs that showcase Verizon’s leading edge services and features that leverage Miami’s nationally-acclaimed social and digital media platforms. This emphasis will include the use of new technology and devices by Hurricanes coaches, administrators and spectators. UM Athletics will utilize Verizon technology to create a more intimate communication with its fan base, enhance the game experience, as well as pre-and post-game communication outreach. “Verizon is a tremendous partner of ours and has played an integral role in the success of Miami Hurricanes Athletics,” said Blake James, Miami Director of Athletics. “With new technology and devices from Verizon, our coaches and administrators can continue to be some of the most connected and technologically advanced in the nation. We are excited to continue our partnership with Verizon.” “The role of wireless technology in college sports, from the way teams prepare to actually broadcasting games, is evolving quickly,” said Jay Lockhart, Associate Director of Marketing for Verizon Wireless. “Verizon is excited about our continued role in supporting UM Athletics and helping to improve the college sports experience for ‘Canes fans around the world.” Verizon’s initial partnership and current extension was secured by Hurricane Sports Properties, the multimedia rights holder of University of Miami Athletics and a joint venture of Learfield Sports and IMG College.

Former URowers Honor Okie O’Connor

They have come together every year since 2009, but this year was different. Former University of Miami rowers had a special reason to come back to their alma mater for this year’s reunion and it was not just Miami’s football game against the rival Florida Gators. The former U rowers came together to catch up and reminisce about their time at Miami. But most importantly, they convened to honor their old coach, Joseph “Okie” O’Connor, who passed away in April. O’Connor was the pioneer of Miami rowing, becoming the program’s first head coach in 1986. Wynne Stallings, who rowed at Miami under O’Connor and helped organize the reunion, remembered what it was like to row for “Okie”. “He did it on a shoestring budget with no recruits,” Stallings said. “It was not a scholarship sport at the time. He begged all of us. He begged me. He grabbed everyone that looked athletic and tall and said ‘Hey, you know, you ever thought about rowing?’” O’Connor built the rowing program from the ground up. Under his leadership, the Canes moved into the Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center in 1993. That same year, O’Connor was named the Southeast Collegiate Coach of the Year. While rowing was not recognized as an NCAA Championship sport for almost 10 years, the program was a varsity sport from the beginning – its first race in the spring of 1987 – which allowed the University of Miami to be Title IX compliant. In 1996, the University of Miami and NCAA officially recognized rowing as a championship sport, sanctioning the first NCAA Rowing Championships in history. O’Connor guided the program until August 2001. In 15 years at Miami, “Okie” made an impact on countless rowers and members of the University community “One of our rowers, who was one of the first to row, actually wrote out when she learned of his death, sort of in a poetic way, all the things that he instilled in her,” Stallings said. “How to dig deep within ourselves when the going is tough and how to pull from within and know that we’re capable of something. Even if we don’t feel good, if situations are not ideal, to know that we can do it. “Okie, I remember him saying, ‘Find a way,’” Stallings said. “Find a way to make it work and I do hear that sometimes in situations where things aren’t going that great and I don’t feel that confidence. I can sometimes hear that voice in the middle of those times, when I was able to defeat my own odds and perform and succeed.” Nearly 100 rowers came together at the Hecht Athletic Center for a reunion and celebration of O’Connor’s life. Also in attendance were O’Connor’s three sisters, who came down from New York and spoke at the memorial. Following the event at the Hecht Athletic Center, they went to the Miami Rowing Club to continue honoring their former coach. On Saturday, they attended Miami’s 21-16 win over the Gators at Sun Life Stadium. Beyond honoring O’Connor, the rowers took the time to share stories and catch up on how their lives have gone since they graduated from Miami. While they have all gone their separate ways, they still have immense love for their alma mater. “We all look the same, we all have the same stories, we’re still laughing about the same things we did in college,” Stallings said. “Some of us have kept in touch and some of us haven’t, but either way we all have the same love and fellowship that we did before. That doesn’t go away and I think that’s what a sport does for its team. It’s a bond that never really breaks. Some people choose to break it, but the ones that are here have chosen to stay with it and it’s real special to be here.” 30

The University of Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team will host a fall tournament on October 13 - 15 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Miami. The Hurricanes will look to keep their strong fall season going after successful play at the Duke Fab Four and ITA/Riviera All-American Championships. The 32-player tournament will feature some of the best players in the nation from Auburn, Mississippi, Few are lucky enough to say that they have studied in the university, represented that college in a sport, earned a graduate degree from that institution and worked as a coach with the same team they once belonged to. However, the Venezuelan tennis player Laura Vallverdú is one of the lucky few who made that happen.

She was the top-ranked player at every level including 10 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under. Maybe most impressively, Vallverdú was ranked No. 1 at the 16 and under level when she was just 14 years old.

It all started at Club Hogar Hispano de Valencia in Venezuela. At the age of four, Vallverdú started with tennis lessons and admitted she did not like the sport, giving up the game for two years before starting again at age six.

“At that stage of my life I played in tournaments in South America,” Vallverdú said. “In this circuit if you get the top six, they take you to Europe. I was lucky to have done it twice, once at the 14 and under level and then again in 16 and under.”

Vallverdú confessed that she could beat her brother, Daniel Vallverdú, until she was 10. Daniel, who also played tennis at the University of Miami, is The University of Miami (UM) not only gave her an education, but friends and known for being one of the coaches for the current third-ranked player in the a job as the assistant coach of the women’s tennis team. world, Andy Murray.

“I remember telling my dad when I was six, ‘I want to get into tennis again’ and he told me that if I started again I could not quit,” Vallverdú said. “To which I replied, ‘I swear, I swear that I will never give it up again.”

At age 15, she moved to Spain where she attended the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona.

Twenty years later, Vallverdú is still as excited about tennis as she was when she first committed to the game.

“I played junior tournaments of the International Tennis Federation [ITF, for its acronym in English] and then moved on to play professionally. Although I lived in Spain, I participated in the Orange Bowl tennis tournament in the U.S. Venezuela, the start [which takes place in Miami and features the top prospects in the sport] and reached the final. Canes Moving Forward After a flawless finish through its non-conference schedule, the University of Miami women’s soccer team continued its grueling ACC slate with matchups against NC State, fifth-ranked North Carolina and third-ranked Florida State. With help from junior midfielder Erin McGovern and sophomore Jasmine Paterson, the Hurricanes (6-4-0) moved past NC State with a 2-1 win. Miami, who earned its first conference victory of the season with the decision, extended an undefeated streak against the Wolfpack that dates back to the 2006 season. “This shows we have it in us,” Paterson said after the game “If we play our game the whole time, we can keep the game where we want it.” Miami looked well on its way to securing a point at home against reigning national champions North Carolina, but an outburst from 2012 Herrmann Trophy winner Crystal Dunn proved the difference in what resulted as a disappointing home defeat.

“That’s why she is the best college player in the country, because she gets it done,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “I thought we did a good job of frustrating her, and Tara Schwitter did a great job of marking her. But with a player like that, if you give her a little inch, she’ll score a goal.” The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Coach Monroe and her staff, who have a matchup with Notre Dame looming on Oct. 6. With many of the conference’s most talented opponents already in the team’s rearview mirror, Monroe is confident her team can tackle the challenges that lie ahead. “It’s going to be a huge challenge for us,” Monroe said. “But it’s the reason we play in the ACC. Every game is going to be tough, and I think we’re ready for it.”

Luis Brande Luncheon Honors Former Pitcher

On a balmy late-summer afternoon in the team meeting room at Mark Light Field, the same baseball sanctuary where Luis Brande once honed his notorious off-speed repertoire, all of the usual suspects were present and accounted for. There was Red Berry, the legendary pitching coach and even better story-teller, working his charm to the delight of the crowd. There were battery mates Steve Lerner and Pat Callahan sharing a tale about “The Wizard” over in the corner. And, of course, there was public address announcer Jay Rokeach – whose voice sounded as amplified as it did over the park’s meager sound system way back then. But the biggest smile of them all – no small task in a room full of Hurricane baseball pioneers, make no mistake about it - belonged to Luis. One of the former righthander’s stories focused on a team trip to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. “The baseball stadium in Esteli had chicken wire all over the place, and had wooden horse stables as our dugout. It was a cowboy town with six shooters, holsters, and horses!” Lerner, listening to the story from afar, burst out laughing in confirmation. “You should have seen it! It was unbelievable!” And so went the afternoon, another magical one to add to The Light’s lengthy history of similarly emotional days. With so many smiles circulating amongst the group, one of the reunion’s driving motives – Luis’ continued battle with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease – was overshadowed by the encompassing familiarity of the ballpark and its habitants. Luis, a two-year reliever for the Hurricanes from 1974-76, is no longer able to verbally communicate due to the effects of the disease. With some assistance from Jay-Ro, however, Luis shared more stories – the addictive iced tea in the dugout, a trip to the Bahamas where the opposing catcher threw “laser beams” behind his back (which Luis imitated), the four innings of no-hit baseball he threw in relief at a tournament hosted by Mississippi State. The crowd, which included teammates and coaches from Luis’ two years at Dade-South, was beaming. Dr. Oscar Loret De Mola, formerly a Hurricane catcher and now a local pediatric gastroenterologist, was taken aback by the portrait of his former teammate – delivering a vicious hook to a pitiable opponent - plastered to the wall. All attendees signed the poster with a personalized touch. “He is such a great friend,” the doctor said, smiling. “And, man, what a curveball.” Luis’ wife Dora was more than happy to fulfill her husband’s familiar role of photographer for the day. One of the better photo opportunities arrived when Director of Athletics Blake James and head baseball coach Jim Morris presented Luis with a cap and jersey – adorned with his name and #14, of course – to honor his achievements. Just one day after their 16-year wedding anniversary, Dora was thrilled to finally attach faces to the names involved in stories she had heard too many times to count. “Luis didn’t know a lot of the guys would be there today, because I wanted it to be a surprise,” she said. “It’s a great community, and it has been so many years since Luis has been a part of the University. To bring him back and reconnect with his teammates, everyone went out of their way to make this happen. It’s such a special thing to do for a wonderful man.” Overheard by all, as he always has been, Jay-Ro finished his reading of Luis’ memoir. “We have so many memories together,” it read. “God bless UM baseball, and God bless all of you.” 36

KENO’S CANES OPEN ACC PLAY 2-0 Miami went undefeated in its ACC opening weekend, beating BC and Syracuse After a strong showing in nonconference play, the University of Miami volleyball team opened its ACC schedule last weekend with a pair of road matches. The Canes traveled to the Northeast, facing off against conferences foes Boston College and Syracuse. Miami dropped the first two sets against BC, leaving the Eagles just one set away from taking the ACC opener. But the Hurricanes regrouped at the intermission and charged back to take the next three sets and the match. The victory over Boston College was another in a long line of “firsts” for head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara. In his first year at Miami, Gandara picked up his first ACC win when the Canes defeated BC in five sets. Miami had four players register doubledoubles as juniors Savanah Leaf (17 kills, 12 digs), Blair Fuentez (53 assists, 10 digs) and Alexis Mourning (14 kills, 17 blocks), as well as sophomore Misty Ma’a (16 kills, 10 digs), made major contributions in the five-set win. Defensively, Mourning’s career-best 17 blocks helped the Canes tally 46 blocks on the afternoon. Senior defensive specialist Ryan Shaffer led Miami with 22 digs. A day later, the Canes were back in action at one of the most recognizable venues in the country, the Carrier Dome. Known primarily as the home of Syracuse

football and basketball, the Carrier Dome hosted the match between the Hurricanes and the Orange. Miami overcame some difficult circumstances and came away victorious, 3-1. It was the first time the two programs met since 2003, when both were members of the BIG EAST. “It was a tough match,” Gandara said. “Not only because of the physical Syracuse team, but because of the logistics of the travel. We got in at 11:30 p.m. and got to the hotel and woke up early, ate and were in the gym by 10:45 a.m. It was a tough trip and we were fortunate to come out with two wins.” Gandara is pleased with how his team has developed over the course of the season and believes their hard work is paying dividends. “I think they’re learning how to be consistent in their approach,” Gandara said. “They are getting better at being consistent with how we want to play and it’s starting to pay off.” Following this weekend’s matches at Clemson and Georgia Tech, the Hurricanes will return to Coral Gables for their conference home opener on Oct. 11 against Pitt. A New Start After making its first NCAA postseason trip in eight years, the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team returns Patti Rizzo’s most talented and experienced team to date for the 2013-14 season. In each of Miami’s first two tournaments, the Canes have been anchored by juniors Leticia Ras-Anderica and Rika Park. The remaining three spots in Miami’s lineup have belonged to its three newcomers – sophomore Kailey Walsh and South American freshmen Delfina Acosta and Daniela Darquea. At the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational, the Canes finished seventh out of 15 teams, while Ras-Anderica shot 12-over (74-72-82=228) to tie for 17th overall. Darquea shot 15-over 231 to tie for 30th in her collegiate debut; Acosta, Park and Walsh all tied for 34th at 16-over 232. Earlier this week, the Hurricanes made the first of their two trips to Austin, Texas, with the

Challenge at Onion Creek, where the Hurricanes finished second overall at 31-over (293-292286=871). Miami shot a final-round 286 was the second-lowest team score in program history, behind only its third-round 281 at the Beacon Woods Invitational on Oct. 11,1987. UM Student Scores Big With TigerDirect.com

Calling all football fans! TigerDirect.com and the Miami Hurricanes recently launched a season-long “TV for TDs” giveaway. The guidelines are simple: During each home game, TigerDirect.com will give one lucky fan a TV... the size, however, is up to the Miami Hurricanes. TigerDirect.com has committed to matching the Hurricanes final score with a TV of equal size…TigerDirect knew they’d be giving away some big TVs this year with Miami’s high powered offense, and they were right! University of Miami student RJ Curcio won an 80-inch TV after the 77-point performance the Hurricane’s offense put on. Sebastian the Ibis helped RJ pick out his new TV on Friday. “The reaction on social media after each Miami score was fun to track on Saturday. Fans were creating new hashtags after each Hurricane touchdown -- #63inches, #70inches and finally #77inches – in hopes they would win the giant TV. It definitely made the game more exciting,” said Brian Bowsher, Assistant Athletic Director of Digital Strategy. Causing a national stir with their 77-7 win over Savannah State, the Hurricanes are off to their first 3-0 start since 2004. Being the center of attention is nothing new for the Miami Hurricanes, considering they hold a number of NFL draft records, including the most first round selections in a single draft. With their TigerDirect.com partnership, the Hurricanes will have the leading electronics retailer on the sidelines, cheering them on and giving away large screen televisions in their honor. “The Hurricanes have some of the most loyal and passionate fans in all of college football, and we’re incredibly excited to be offering this season long campaign,” said Steven Leeds, Brand Manager for TigerDirect.com. “With the way the Hurricanes have been playing, we expect to be giving out a lot of big TV’s this season and we couldn’t be more excited about it.” The TigerDirect.com/ Miami Hurricanes sweepstakes packs the cheer of a robust football season and the best deals on up-to-date technology. There is no purchase necessary to enter. The University of Miami Athletics - TigerDirect.com partnership was secured by Hurricane Sports Properties, the multimedia rights holder of University of Miami Athletics and a joint venture of Learfield Sports and IMG College. About TigerDirect For over 20 years, TigerDirect has served the needs of both personal and business computer users, selling consumer electronics, computers, digital media technology and peripherals via catalog, business to business, and Internet channels. TigerDirect is a subsidiary of Systemax Inc. (NYSE: SYX).

ProCanes: Willis McGahee

by Max Strauss HurricaneSports.com: Even with your busy schedule as a professional football player in the NFL, do you still follow the Hurricanes on Saturdays? Willis McGahee: Yeah, I follow them. I try and watch games on Saturday. HurricaneSports.com: What did you think of the team’s win over the Gators? Willis McGahee: That was a big win not only for the team, but for the school. With what’s going on, that was a big win for the team, for the school, and for Hurricanes fans everywhere. HurricaneSports.com: How far do you think Al Golden and the coaching staff can take the Hurricanes this season? Willis McGahee: I think he can take them far. It would be great to have National Championship, but being realistic, I think we can win the ACC with some help from Florida State beating Clemson, and if we beat Florida State. We can use that and build from there. No pressure. HurricaneSports.com: Are there any former Hurricanes teammates that you are still close with and speak with regularly? If so, who are they? Willis McGahee: I still speak with Tavares Gooden, Andre Johnson, Ed Reed, Vernon Carey, Bryant McKinnie, Frank Gore, and Terrell Walden, and my current teammates, Rashad Butler and Travis Benjamin. HurricaneSports.com: What is it like teaming up with former Miami Hurricanes, Rashad Butler and Travis Benjamin? Willis McGahee: In every locker room, I have always had a familiar face from the school. When I was with the Ravens, it was Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. When I went to the Bills, it was Roscoe Parrish. When I was in Denver, it was Orlando Franklin. Now with the Browns, it is Rashad Butler and Travis Benjamin. HurricaneSports.com: What does #NFLU mean to you? Willis McGahee: It shows how the school produces great athletes at any position from offensive linemen to running backs to linebackers to safeties to corners. We are everywhere, all across the board. It really shows what our school can do. HurricaneSports.com: Cleveland Browns Head Coach, Rob Chudzinski was your offensive coordinator during your time at the University of Miami. How do you feel about re-uniting with him? Willis McGahee: It was a good feeling. He knows what I can do, and he also knows what he to expect out of me. He knows that I am going to try and play whether I’m feeling good or bad. HurricaneSports.com: How do you feel about sharing his first career win with him? Willis McGahee: It was a good feeling. I was happy to share it with him. He was happy too. People outside of our locker room didn’t think we were going to win, but he tells us that its not what the people think out there, its what we think inside. HurricaneSports.com: How do you think being a Miami Hurricane has prepared you for life in the NFL? Willis McGahee: When I was there, we had a lot of great athletes, from Sean Taylor to Kellen Winslow to Andre Johnson. We were always competing, whether it was the weight room, or on the football field. We only had one shot, so we had to make it count when we got it. HurricaneSports.com: Do you have any favorite memories from your time as a Hurricane? If so, which/what are they? Willis McGahee: Wide Right, Wide Left. It could have been my 200 yards and six touchdowns against Virginia Tech, or my 200 yards against Florida. Also, the national championship year. My entire career, freshman to junior year, was great. 43

Jimmy Graham Named NFC Player of the Month

Former Miami Hurricanes star and New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced Thursday. Graham is the first tight end to win Player of the Month since the NFL started the award in 1986. The fourth-year veteran finished his record-breaking month with 27 receptions for 458 yards and six touchdowns. Graham is ranked second in the NFL in receiving yards, tied for first in touchdown receptions and fourth in first downs. He has posted three straight 100-yard games, including a 10-catch, 179-yard showing in a 16-14 win over divisional rival Tampa Bay. The 26-year old is coming off the most dominant three-game stretch by a tight end in NFL history, where he posted 23 receptions for 413 yards (18.0 avg.) and five scores. Graham’s three-game span of 413 yards is tied with Shannon Sharpe (1996) for the most by a tight end over a three-game span in a single season. Graham, who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week Three, has earned his second award of the season and third for #ProCanes. Chicago Bears specialist Devin Hester was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week Two.
