McCarthy Voted to ACC SAAC E-Board

Shannon McCarthy of the University of Miami soccer team has been voted as an At-Large Representative on the ACC StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board. A redshirt junior defender, McCarthy was one of three candidates from the conference and won the election to claim her spot on the board. “I am not surprised that Shannon has earned this designation,” Director of Student-Athlete Development Shirelle Jackson said. “She has truly taken advantage of every opportunity we have to offer here at the University of Miami. Her ability to lead on and off the field is a true testament to her strong time management and leadership skills. We are beyond proud of her.” McCarthy is in her second year as one of Miami’s representatives on the ACC SAAC, for which she will now be on the executive board. She is also a co-captain of the soccer team for the second season in a row. A native of Brighton, Mich., McCarthy has played 912 of 928 minutes on the Miami back line this year and has started 27 of 28 matches over the past two seasons. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be in a leadership position for the best conference in the country,” McCarthy said. “What [Shirelle] has done in our athletic department and what she has done in our SAAC group is astonishing and I would have never had the chance to do something like this without her.” McCarthy and the Hurricanes return to the field at 8:00 p.m. Friday night when they take on No. 14 Notre Dame at Cobb Stadium. Lachowecki, Perez the ACC Players of the Week

The University of Miami soccer team swept the ACC weekly awards, as announced Tuesday morning by the conference, while one Hurricane also garnered a national award Junior forward Gracie Lachowecki was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Catalina Perez won ACC Defensive Player of the Week. Perez was also tabbed as the goalkeeper on the Top Drawer Soccer Women’s Team of the Week. “I am so excited for both Gracie and Cat,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “They both had big-time games individually against Notre Dame. Cat made a huge save in regulation and Gracie finished a great opportunity in OT . . . I am so proud of both of them.” Lachowecki and Perez led Miami to a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory over No. 14/4 Notre Dame Friday night at Cobb Stadium. The win was Miami’s first over a ranked opponent since knocking off third-ranked Notre Dame 2-0 Oct. 6, 2013. An Evansville, Ind. native, Lachowecki tallied the golden goal in the 106th minute off a beautiful through ball from senior forward Amy Schmidt. Lachowecki leads the Hurricanes with five goals this season and ranks second in points with 11, behind only Schmidt, who has 13. Perez made the second start of her career in the match against the Fighting Irish and earned her first win and clean sheet. From nearby Boca Raton, Fla., Perez also logged six saves in the victory to equal her career high and made a number of key plays throughout the match. Joining Perez on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week were 10 others players—one for each position—including one from the ACC. She was the lone goalkeeper recognized for the Sept. 28-Oct. 4 stretch. With Lachowecki and Perez garnering the honors Tuesday, Miami became the first team this season to sweep the ACC weekly awards. Additionally, they are the Hurricanes’ first player of the week honorees since Ashley Flinn received the accolade Oct. 8, 2013 for her brace in Miami’s aforementioned win over Notre Dame that season. Lachowecki, Perez and the Hurricanes return to the field Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. when they host No. 22/24 Duke (6-4-3, 0-2-2 ACC) at Cobb Stadium. Donate to Support Willie Abreu’s Mother Rosie

A donation fund has been set up to help Miami Hurricanes junior outfielder Willie Abreu and his family recover after his mother Rosie suffered a stroke before the team’s postseason run to the College World Series in May 2015. Rosie suffered a stroke on May 25th and remained hospitalized for months after undergoing emergency brain surgery. A constant presence at Miami Hurricanes baseball games both at home and on the road, Rosie was forced to watch on television while her son captained Miami to the College World Series. While she is now out of the hospital and on the road to recovery, the Abreu family needs support in medical costs and ongoing therapy. In an effort to support Willie, Rosie and his family during the difficult time, a donation fund has been set up to help pay for the Abreu’s medical bills. Checks can be made out to Manuel Abreu, Willie’s father and Rosie’s husband, and must be delivered to assistant communications director Camron Ghorbi. Checks can be sent to Camron at 5821 San Amaro Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146 or may be delivered in person to the Hecht Athletic Center. It is imperative that any member of the Miami community who wishes to donate money to the family follow the procedure above in order to ensure Willie’s eligibility is not put in jeopardy. Please make sure all money is provided to Camron Ghorbi or another athletics department staff member and not given directly to Willie or any member of the Abreu family. The entire University of Miami family thanks you in advance for your generosity to Willie, Rosie and the Abreu family.

@CanesFutbol Stuns No. 14/4 Notre Dame in 2OT CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Some things you simply cannot script—like an Indiana native whose brother plays soccer for Notre Dame scoring the match-winner to defeat the Fighting Irish. That is exactly what happened Oct. 2 at Cobb Stadium though, as junior forward Gracie Lachowecki tallied a goal in the 106th minute to lift the University of Miami soccer team past No. 14/4 Notre Dame, 1-0. “I took a touch a touch and then I realized that two defenders were on me and I was kind of thinking, ‘Oh, I really need to get on the end of this,’” Lachowecki said of her goal. “So, luckily I got a good touch and got a good shot off. Amy [Schmidt] played me a great ball.” Miami’s leading goal scorer in 2014, senior midfielder/defender Natalie Moik, as well as redshirt freshman goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce both missed the match due to injury, but their teammates rose the occasion. Redshirt sophomore Catalina Perez made the second start of her career in goal and set the tone defensively for Miami, helping the team post its third clean sheet of the season. Perez came up big for the Hurricanes throughout the match, making a number of key plays and tied her career high with six saves. None were bigger than her 79th minute stop on a shot off the foot of Notre Dame (8-3-1, 1-3-0 ACC) senior Anna Maria Gilbertson. The Fighting Irish forward had a stellar open look in the box and put the ball on net, but Perez was up to the task, making a beautiful diving save to keep the match scoreless en route to her first career shutout.

“Catalina made a huge save for us to stay in the game. I am really proud of her,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “. . . She came up big on a few of the corners [as well]. She has a lot of game experience, she has international experience. With Phallon being hurt I knew that she would be able to step right into those shoes and perform for us and play 90 minutes.” When the match went to overtime, Notre Dame had a few chances in the first 10 minutes, but Perez and the Miami (4-7-0, 1-3-0 ACC) back line held strong. In the second overtime session, the Hurricanes amped off the offensive attack and it led to the golden goal. On a counterattack that began after Perez made a brilliant play to knock away a bending corner kick, freshman forward/midfielder Jamie Brunworth played the ball to Schmidt, a senior forward, and she sent it long to a sprinting Lachowecki. The Evansville, Ind. native then calmly slipped the ball near post past diving Notre Dame junior goalkeeper Kaela Little and into the back of the net. Lachowecki’s team-leading fifth goal of the year sent the Hurricanes bench running onto the field in a frenzy. “I’m so proud of this team, not just for beating Notre Dame,” Monroe said. “I’m so proud of them because I just feel like we were unlucky in so many games, losing in overtime a couple times this season, losing by one goal [two other times] . . . It just goes to show you that with the limited amount of wins that we had, this team was still so positive in training every day. They’re a joy to work with.” Each of Miami’s last two victories over ranked opponents have now come against Notre Dame. The Hurricanes downed the third-ranked Fighting Irish 2-0 Oct. 6, 2013. Miami has now earned at least one win over a ranked team in 10 of the past 11 years and owns 10 victories over sides with a top-10 ranking, including five in the last five seasons. The win over the Fighting Irish was also the team’s first in extra time since a 2-1 double overtime triumph at UW-Milwaukee Sept. 1, 2013. Lachowecki would go on to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her match-winning tally, while Perez won ACC Defensive Player of the Week for her first career win and shutout, as Miami became the first team to sweep the ACC weekly awards this season. The Hurricanes will continue their four-match homestand Thursday, Oct. 8 when they host No. 22/24 Duke (6-3-3, 0-1-2 ACC) at 7:00 p.m. at Cobb Stadium. Precious Ogunleye Competes at African Games

While most University of Miami students spent the early parts of September getting acclimated to new professors and courses, Hurricanes thrower Precious Ogunleye was on another continent competing against some of the best athletes in Africa. Ogunleye was a member of Team Nigeria at the 2015 African Games, hosted in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo. “It was a humbling experience,” Ogunleye said. “I was really nervous going in and without my coach, it was really difficult. But I think me working on my mental game helped a lot. That’s what I really worked on when I was there. I didn’t have the best meet of the season, but definitely, mentally, I feel like I strengthened myself for this upcoming season.” Ogunleye competed in the throws for Nigeria, placing fourth in the discus and fifth in the hammer throw. She is grateful for the opportunity to compete internationally for the country that her family hails from. “I’m still kind of taking everything in,” Ogunleye said. “I still can’t believe I got to compete for my country in the African Games. When people say, ‘Oh, you went to the Congo’, I’m like ‘Yeah. Surprisingly enough, I did go and I did get to wear a Nigeria uniform’. It was fun. It was a lot of fun. I feel like I did my best.” Her path to the African Games began during the 2015 season at Miami. Ogunleye excelled for the Hurricanes, winning the ACC outdoor title in the women’s hammer throw. As her 2015 campaign continued to progress well, the dream of competing for Nigeria began to become more of a reality. “I think in the beginning of the season, I had my mind set on wanting to compete for my country,” Ogunleye said. “I think mid-season, towards I think it was after the FSU Invitational where I did good in all three events, one of the coaches from the team reached out to me and asked me if I was interested. Throughout the season I thought about it and after nationals I made the final decision to go along with it.” Ogunleye competed at the Nigerian National Championships, competing in the hammer throw, discus and shot put. The senior took home two silver medals, placing second in the hammer throw with a mark of 57.86m and second in the discus with a throw of 48.63m. Ogunleye also posted a mark of 14.35m in the shot put, placing fourth. “It was big because it showed me that I have potential and that it wasn’t just a fluke meet where I’m just coming from the United States and competing in Nigeria,” Ogunleye said. “It boosted my confidence. I was pumped and ready to go to the African Games.” The experience competing for Nigeria at the African Games came with many fond memories for Ogunleye, calling it one of the best experiences of her athletic career. “I think just being in the Congo and the setting, it was beautiful out there,” Ogunleye said. “The stadium was so pretty and they had a couple different stadiums, and I got to watch different sports like handball. I watched beach volleyball and I watched some of the Special Olympics. I think my most fun memory was definitely just the setting of everything. It was really, really pretty there. I like the stadium and it was so big.” Ogunleye will look to carry her success into the 2015-16 season, her final year at Miami. The senior will look to improve in all her event areas and defend her ACC outdoor title in the hammer throw. She also hopes to return to compete for Nigeria at next year’s African Games and possibly the Olympics.

Algee Earns ACC Swimmer of the Week Honors

Miami Hurricanes junior swimmer Angela Algee was recognized with ACC Female Swimmer of the Week honors, the conference office announced. Algee made an impressive season debut at the Pinch A Penny All-Florida Invitational, serving as Miami’s top point-getter across a number of impressive performances. The weekly award was a career-first for Algee, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials after an impressive long course season. Algee contributed a whopping 110 points to Miami’s 509-point total over the weekend. The Orlando native posted three top-five finishes, placing second in the 100 fly with a time of 55.00, third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.22 before finishing fourth in the 50 free at 23.63. “The 100 fly was one of the high points of the meet for us,” head coach Andy Kershaw said over the weekend. “Angela getting second was tremendous…she performed our plan and really came through on it.” Algee, who Kershaw said is “poised to take the next step forward” in 2015-16, also swam in four relays, posting splits that ranked second-fastest in the field in all four races. Her splits of 50.15 seconds in the 400 free relay, 23.09 in the 200 free relay, 55.30 in the 400 medley relay and 24.64 in the 200 medley relay were the fastest relay splits among all swimmers from ACC schools posted at All Florida. MALIBU, Calif. / CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Stephanie Wagner of the University of Miami women’s tennis team defeated two top-20 opponents on day two of the Oracle/ITA Masters, but that was far from her only accomplishment. Wagner’s first victory of the day at the Malibu Racquet Club made her the eighth player in program history to reach 100 career wins. Ranked sixth in the country, Wagner opened the day by picking up a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 18 Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M in the consolation quarterfinals. It was that win that got her to triple digits. “Wagner is playing better with each match,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “[She is] seeing things clearer and making sharp decisions.” A native of Amberg, Germany, Wagner won 27-plus matches in each of her first three campaigns at Miami and her 38 victories last year tied for the fifth-most in a year in school history. Last season, Wagner became the seventh Hurricane to reach the NCAA Singles Championship semifinals and was an ITA All-American, a First Team All-ACC selection and the ITA National Player to Watch. After taking down Pierson, Wagner won in impressive fashion over Vanderbilt’s Astra Sharma, 6-3, 6-1. The 2015 NCAA Tournament MVP and SEC Tournament MVP, Sharma is ranked No. 14 in the country. The Hurricanes also hosted the Miami Fall Invite on the opening weekend of the 2015 fall season, while Wagner and sophomore Sinead Lohan, ranked No.13, were in Malibu. Entering that weekend, sophomore Yolimar Ogando had never so much played a ranked opponent. Following the weekend, Ogando had defeated three, including two in the top 50, and earned a Miami Fall Invite Orange Singles Draw championship to show for her efforts. Ogando, ranked No. 94, knocked off No. 47 Pleun Burgmans of Auburn, the top seed in the draw, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the final Sunday. “It was nice and refreshing to see that she may be up for the real challenge this year,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said of Ogando. “We are ready for it.” Ogando previously downed No. 49 [1] Frances Altick of Vanderbilt and No. 77 Alizee Michaud of Auburn Saturday to reach the final. Her victory over Burgmans gave Miami the title in two of the four draws in the tournament, as freshman Clara Tanielian and sophomore Wendy Zhang won an all-Miami finale in the Orange Doubles Draw Saturday. The duo won 6-4 over a pair of fellow Hurricanes, freshman Ana Madcur and senior Clementina Riobueno, to come away with the title at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Portis Named to ACC Class of Football Legends

University of Miami running back Clinton Portis was one of 14 former student-athletes named to the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Class of Football Legends on Tuesday. Portis, along with the 13 other honorees from the ACC, will be recognized at the ACC Night of Legends presented by the Belk Bowl on Friday, Dec. 4, and during the on-field pregame festivities at the 11th annual Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship in Charlotte, N.C. Portis, who played for the Hurricanes from 1999-2001, became just the second true freshman to start at running back for Miami in 1999. He set a school freshman record with five 100-yard performances, and led the team with 838 yards and eight touchdowns on 143 carries (5.9 yards per carry) in 10 games during his first year in the Orange and Green. His 1,200 yards rushing during the 2001 national championship season was then the third-highest single-season rushing yardage total in Miami history. He still ranks fifth on the Hurricanes’ all-time career rushing list with 2,523 yards. Portis went on to a stellar professional career after he was selected by Denver in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. During his first year in Denver, Portis earned league Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He amassed 9,923 rushing yards and 75 touchdowns in nine seasons – two with the Broncos and seven with the Washington Redskins. He retired as the 27th all-time leading rusher in NFL history.

2015 @CANESVB SCHEDULE

@CanesVB Sweeps ACC Home Opener Mimai beats Georgia Tech and Clemson in first conference home matches The University of Miami volleyball team opened the month of October with a pair of ACC victories. The Hurricanes hosted Georgia Tech and Clemson over the weekend and Miami defeated both to earne its first ACC wins of the 2015 season. The Hurricanes brought a total team effort before nearly 800 fans at the James L. Knight Sports Complex on Friday night against Georgia Tech. Three Canes recorded double-digit kills against the Yellow Jackets, with different players stepping up at different times to help Miami defend its home court in a four-set victory. “Home wins I think are going to be critical this year in the ACC from what I’ve seen so far,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “There’s no small opponent in the conference, so you got to protect your home court. They’re definitely a team that plays a little different style than we do, so it was tough to adjust to them. But, we found a way.” Olga Strantzali led Miami with 18 kills, adding five digs, four blocks and an ace. She was one of three Canes to record double-digit kills, joined by senior Taylor Scott and junior Kelsie Groot. Scott tallied 14 kills, adding nine digs and two blocks, while Groot finished with 12 kills, 12 digs, two blocks and an ace. Grotto’s double-double was her fifth this season and Friday marked the 11th consecutive match in which the junior tallied doubledigit kills. “It’s fun to watch them do that because they know what they’re working on,” Gandara said. “Watching them get excited for each other when they’re making the plays that we talk about making, that’s the exciting part. They’re going for it, they continue to work on their game, and definitely, if we get to where 35

we want to go, it could be really fun.” Two days later, Miami swept Clemson to close out the Canes’ first home weekend of ACC play. Miami took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-16, but needed extra points to take the final set, 26-24. “I think that they’re a good serving team,” Gandara said. “That keeps you in the game at any level. They did a good job serving our weaknesses and exposed us a little bit.” Groot and Scott tied for the team lead with 14 kills apiece. The senior Scott hit .393 against the Tigers, adding eight digs. Groot finished one dig shy of a double-double, hitting .370 with nine digs, a block and a service ace. “We appreciate every win because the ACC is a great conference,” Scott said. “We’re pumped, but now we just have to focus on ourselves. We need to continue to trust ourselves, our technique, and what our coaches say. That’s the most important thing.” Middle blocker Alexis Mourning led Miami with a .538 hitting percentage, recording eight kills and a service aces. Fellow middle blockers Lucia Pampana and Sakile Simmons added two kills apiece. Miami’s offense was run smoothly by setter Haley Templeton. The sophomore distributed 39 assists and added five digs and a block while helping the Hurricanes hit .343 as a team for the match. “I think we came out with a good win and it’s good to keep the winning streak going,” Groot said. “Now we can keep moving forward and I think we can feed off of this momentum in the next coming weeks. Playing on the road is hard, but this weekend was definitely a confidence booster being in front of our home crowd and playing well.” october 8, 2015

The University of Miami rowing program will compete in three events in the 2015 fall season, head coach Dave Sanderson announced Tuesday. The Hurricanes will row in three events this fall, including a repeat appearance at the prestigious Head of the Charles. Sanderson believes the competitive schedule will help Miami open the 2015-16 season strong. “I am looking forward to our fall racing schedule,” Sanderson said. “Our main goals for the fall season revolve around developing technical skill and physiology for the spring season. But, of course, it is fun to race at these fall events and the team looks forward to them.” Miami will open the fall at the Head of the Indian Creek on Oct. 11. The Hurricanes will compete on their home course in their first competitive racing of the fall. The Canes will have two entries in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. Miami has two entries in the Club four event scheduled for October 17-18. Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes had four boats compete at the Head of the Hooch. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 7-8. “I am pleased that we will again get to race at the Head of the Charles in Boston,” Sanderson said. The Head of the Charles is always a great race and later on in November nearly the full squad, novices included, will get to race at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga. I am excited to see what kind of speed we can build between now and then.” For official updates and information please visit our website at HurricaneSports.com or “Like” us on Facebook at http://www. facebook.com/canesrowing. If I had to describe the team in one word it would be: This year- mature. Miami fans should know that I: I’m a sweet guy At Miami this season, my goal is to: Win an ACC championship, no doubt. I wear jersey number 13 because: It was just a leftover number when I was growing up, and I happened to make it my number. Three words that I’d use to describe Coach L are: Caring, father figure, communicator. If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would be: Can’t go wrong with the rice and beans. If I could invite three people to dinner, I’d invite: My girl, my mother, and either my grandmother or grandfather. Nobody knows I can: Dunk. When I was young, I wanted to be: I wanted to be a boxer. Boxing was the number one sport in Puerto Rico. In my neighborhood when I was growing up, a lot of kids had gloves and we would fight so it became a game for fun. We used to watch a lot of great fighters in Puerto Rico, so it kind of made me want to be a boxer but I never even actually tried to do it. It was just something I wish I did. My first job was: I didn’t work for long, but I was in high school and I had a Brazilian friend, we used to work in catering and I would bring trays with plates and stuff. TV* denotes either ACC Network or Regional Can you cook? Basic stuff. I’m confident about this, I won’t starve ever. If I can’t afford to eat out, I won’t starve Sports Network. Times and networks TBA. because I can cook my own stuff. All game times listed in Eastern Standard Time. My dream job is: To be a head coach at a high level Division I. One thing on my bucket list is: To go to South Africa. I’ve always been passionate about watching Animal Planet and Discovery Channel, so on TV I’m always watching about lions and the jungle itself, so it’s always been a dream for me to actually drive by in a Jeep and see them. It’s my number one dream trip. No one can believe I watch: A lot of reality shows. I used to watch the Kardashians a lot, but I stopped, it got out of hand. Overall I just watch reality shows. My girl actually loves it because she likes them, so she has somebody that supports her on that. Me, in three words: Caring, loving, and passionate. Do you play any musical instruments? No, I wish I could play guitar and the piano. If you walked in my dorm room/apartment, the first thing you would notice is: it’s clean. Do you have any athletes in your family? My mom used to be a track and field athlete, when she was younger. She never took it to the next level with college or anything. She ran long distance. When I played basketball as a kid, I pretended to be: Allen Iverson. I was raised: In Puerto Rico, with two brothers by a single mom. My dad passed away when I was two years old, so she eventually ended up marrying my brother’s father and he was there to help her, and to give me support. He would take me to the basketball court. It’s hard to replace a real father or mother but I think he did a pretty good job of that, just being there for me.

Three Former @CanesWBB Standouts Ink Pro Deals CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A pair of seniors from the 2014-15 University of Miami women’s basketball team have signed professional contracts. Both Suriya McGuire and Jassany Williams will be continuing their playing careers overseas. McGuire, a 5-foot-11 guard, inked with Hamar Basketball Club in Iceland, while Williams, a 6-foot-2 forward, agreed to a deal with Alte Kanti Aarau in Switzerland. “We are just thrilled for Suriya and Jassany,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. “They are super individuals who represented the University so well throughout their careers. I could not be happier to see them both fulfill their lifelong dreams.” A Minneapolis native, McGuire was a member of the Hurricanes from 2011-15 and tied for the fourth-most games played in program history, with 127 appearances. Additionally, McGuire’s 76 blocks place her No. 11 all-time at Miami. McGuire averaged 9.2 points per game as a junior in 2013-14 and posted double figures in a game 35 times during her career. She recorded 50-plus assists and 115-plus rebounds each of her final three seasons in Coral Gables. McGuire helped Miami reach the postseason all four of her seasons in orange and green, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. “It’s amazing to see my dream finally become my reality,” McGuire said. “This is just the beginning of what is yet to come.”

Hailing from nearby Davie, Fla., Williams played for Miami from 2013-15 after spending the first two years of her career at Auburn. A 2014-15 All-ACC Academic Team selection, Williams set the program single game record with nine blocked shots in Miami’s win over fourth-ranked Notre Dame last season. Despite playing just two seasons for the Hurricanes, Williams finished her career third in blocks at Miami with 133. Her 76 blocks in 2014-15 rank second on the single season list, while her 57 in 2013-14 tie for fifth in Hurricane history. Williams led Miami in blocks and rebounds her last season, while leading the ACC in blocks in conference play and finishing sixth overall. “I feel very honored and blessed to be able to pursue my dream of becoming a professional basketball player,” Williams said. “Switzerland is a very beautiful place with wonderful people and I am so happy to be a part of this organization.” Additionally, another former Miami women’s basketball player, Maria Brown, is set to start her professional career. A 6-foot-1 forward who attended Miami from 2010-14, Brown signed a contract with Club Basket D’Ifs in Chemin du Val, France, a part of the NF1 league. “I’m so grateful for this opportunity,” Brown said. “This will be my first time traveling out of the country. I can’t wait to embark on this new adventure and grow with my new team in France.” A native of Monroe, La., Brown played in 128 games in orange and green, good for the second-most in program history. She recorded playing time in every game of her Miami career. Brown, who heads to France Sunday, helped the Hurricanes advance to the postseason in all four of her years at Miami, including a trio of trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Hurricanes went 91-37, including a 45-19 mark in ACC play. Additionally, Brown was part of two Miami squads that went undefeated at home and on the first ACC regular season championship team in program history in 2010-11. As a senior in 2013-14, Brown logged 23 starts in 31 games played and averaged 5.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She ranked third on the team in rebounding, fourth in blocks and tied for fourth in starts that season. Brown is the 15th Hurricane during Katie Meier’s tenure as head coach who has gone on to ink a professional deal, with greater than a half dozen of those in the last four years alone. @CanesFutbol to Play Duke at Cobb Stadium

After an impressive double overtime victory over No. 14/4 Notre Dame Friday night, the University of Miami soccer team had Sunday off. Now, the Hurricanes are set to return to action Thursday at Cobb Stadium when they host Duke at 7 p.m. in the team’s Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The Hurricanes and Blue Devils did not face off last season, but each of the last two meetings in Coral Gables have been thrillers. Miami won 2-0 over No. 18 Duke in 2010 and fell 3-2 in overtime against the second-ranked Blue Devils in 2012 despite a brace from forward Ava Ambrose, then a freshman. Miami’s 2010 victory against Duke and the recent win against Notre Dame—in which junior forward Gracie Lachowecki scored the golden goal in the 106th minute—are among the team’s 11 triumphs over ranked opponents in the last seven seasons. Seven of those have come against top-15 teams, including four with a top-five ranking. Lachowecki, who leads Miami (4-7-0, 1-3-0 ACC) with five goals this season, earned ACC Offensive Player of the Week for her decisive tally against the Fighting Irish. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Catalina Perez also picked up ACC Defensive Player of the Week and Top Drawer Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week for her double overtime clean sheet, which included a career-high-tying half dozen saves. The Blue Devils, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, enter Thursday’s match at 6-4-3 on the season, including 0-2-2 in ACC competition. Duke went 8-9-1 (4-5-1 ACC) last year, ending a streak of 11-straight NCAA Championship trips. The affair between the Hurricanes and Blue Devils will be broadcast live on ESPN3 HERE and live stats can be found HERE. The first 100 fans at the match will receive pink shirts as a part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Game and pink pompoms available too. Additionally, will be Coca-Cola koozie and poster giveaways.

Perez Earns National Player of the Week Award

The accolades are continuing to roll in for redshirt sophomore Catalina Perez of the University of Miami soccer team. Perez was named Wednesday the College Soccer 360 National Primetime Player of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4. A goalkeeper from Boca Raton, Fla., Perez was previously selected Tuesday as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and the Top Drawer Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week. The honors for Perez come following her 106-minute clean sheet against No. 14/4 Notre Dame to help Miami take down the Fighting Irish 1-0 in double overtime Oct. 2 at Cobb Stadium. Perez logged six saves, tying her career high, and recorded the first win and shutout of her college career. Perez’s start against Notre Dame was her second as a Hurricane, as she filled tremendously for injured redshirt freshman Phallon Tullis-Joyce. “Catalina made a huge save for us to stay in the game. I am really proud of her,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said after the match. “. . . She came up big on a few of the corners. She has a lot of game experience, she has international experience. With Phallon being hurt I knew that she would be able to step right into those shoes and perform for us and play 90 minutes.” Perez played in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with the Colombian National Team. She started the team’s match against the United States and did not allow a goal in 47 minutes on the field in the first knockout round contest in the nation’s history. After six days without a match, Perez and the Hurricanes take the field again Thursday night. Miami hosts the Duke Blue Devils at 7 p.m. and the action will be shown live on ESPN3 HERE.
