From the Athletic Director
Dear Canes Family, Earlier this week, the NCAA Committee on Infractions released its findings on the University of Miami, concluding a process that began nearly three years ago. The University has accepted the findings and the penalties from the Committee. Over the course of the investigation, in instances where it was determined that former members of our staff or student-athletes had violated NCAA rules, we accepted responsibility and took unilateral action at the time, including student-athlete suspensions, the unprecedented two-year bowl ban and restrictions on recruiting. The Department of Athletics instituted stricter compliance policies and procedures beginning in 2011 and we can be confident that we are stronger and more vigilant in our compliance. For all of us who love this University and are passionate about our student-athletes and our teams, the past few years have been difficult. Yet today, we can be proud of how our Hurricane family, led by President Shalala, handled the challenges, acted with integrity and, simply, always did what we believed was the right thing to do. Today is about looking ahead and moving forward but not starting over. Hurricane Athletics experienced one the most successful years in our history in 2012-2013, because of our exceptional student-athletes, tremendous coaches and your support. Fifteen of our eighteen sports teams participated in NCAA postseason play including our men’s basketball team, who were ACC regular-season and tournament champions; our women’s tennis team, ACC champions; and our storied baseball program, which competed in its 41st consecutive NCAA Tournament. As important, Miami continues to be among the nation’s leaders with a 93% Graduation Success Rate and received recognition for the academic achievements of many of our student-athletes. Two of our crowning achievements in 2013 were made possible by the tremendous support we continue to receive from Canes supporters. We opened the state-of-the-art Theodore G. Schwartz and Todd G. Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence, built through a $15 million campaign coordinated by the Hurricane Club. In addition, thanks to its award-winning #BuildingChampions campaign, the Hurricane Club now has a record-high of over 6,800 active members, an increase of nearly 2,000 in two years. On behalf of the more than 400 student-athletes, 200 staff members and coaches and the thousands of alumni and friends throughout the world, thank you for standing with the U! I stand with the U always! Now it’s time to move Full Speed Ahead. Go Canes! Sincerely, Blake James

#BuildingChampions: UM Continues GSR
The University of Miami recorded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 92 percent, according to the rates released Thursday by the NCAA. For the second straight year, Miami’s department-wide GSR ranks fourth among ACC schools and eighth overall among FBS programs. UM has exceeded the NCAA average GSR in each of the last nine years. In 2012, Miami set a school-record with a 93 percent GSR, a year after establishing a then-record at 89 percent. “We set a high standard for our Hurricanes to achieve excellence in all academic and athletic pursuits,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “The growth we have witnessed in our Graduation Success Rates is remarkable and we continue to produce tremendous results. In less than 10 years, we have improved our rate by 15 percentage points and we are now a national leader in the most important academic performance measure.” Eight teams compiled GSR marks of 100 percent. Men’s diving and golf each posted their ninth consecutive perfect marks, while women’s tennis recorded its sixth straight GSR score of 100 percent. Baseball, women’s track & field / cross country, rowing, women’s swimming and volleyball also tallied perfect GSR scores. It was volleyball’s third straight year with a perfect GSR; rowing and women’s swimming posted perfect scores for the second straight year. “I am very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, whose vigilance in academics lays the groundwork for graduation,” said Blake James, Miami AD. “One of our goals as a program is to graduate every student-athlete and I am proud that we are getting close. By earning a degree from the University of Miami, our student-athletes are ready to achieve excellence in life. Congratulations to our coaches, staff and especially, our student-athletes.” Baseball had the largest jump of any UM program, improving by 20 points (80 to 100) and has improved by 40 points (60 to 100) since 2010. The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained. 11

Baseball America Ranks Recruiting Class No. 6
The University of Miami baseball recruiting class was ranked sixth in the nation by Baseball America Tuesday, marking the program’s highest ranking from the publication since 2006. It was the second straight year Miami’s incoming group, comprised of 14 freshmen and two junior college transfers, was ranked among the top 10 by Baseball America. Miami’s 2012 recruiting class was rated tenth by the publication, while its 2006 class was ranked fifth. Baseball America became the second publication to recognize Miami’s incoming group this fall. Collegiate Baseball newspaper rated the Hurricanes’ class the fourth-best in the nation in its annual rankings released in late September. Four of Miami’s newcomers were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft: outfielder Willie Abreu (Cincinnati Reds), first baseman/right-handed pitcher Derik Beauprez (Boston Red Sox), catcher Zack Collins (Cincinnati) and outfielder Jacob Heyward (Atlanta Braves). The newcomers will be joining a strong nucleus of returners that guided Miami to its college baseball- record 41st consecutive postseason appearance in 2013. “I think offensively we’re making the right adjustments to get the guys who can hit with authority in here,” recruiting coordinator Gino DiMare said in an interview with Baseball America. “This is a deep group, a physical group—a lot of big, strong kids. No excuses; we’ve just got to develop them.” Miami’s incoming class was rated the highest among all ACC schools, joining Virginia (No. 14), Clemson (No. 16) and Florida State (No. 18) in the top 25. The team opened fall practice Monday at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. Held every Monday through Saturday until Nov. 22, practices are set to begin each weekday at 2:30 p.m., while Saturday practices will commence at 10 a.m. All practices are open to the public.

South Florida Speed: Phillip Dorsett
If you blink, you might miss him. That is how fast Phillip Dorsett is on a football field. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was an impact player well before he donned Miami’s orange and green. A star for high school powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, Dorsett joins a long line of Raiders who have gone on to shine as Hurricanes. Aquinas is known as a football factory, producing numerous NFL and college players including former Cane linebacker Tavares Gooden and current Miami players Brandon Linder and Jelani Hamilton. Dorsett is also a member of an elite group of former Raider wide receivers who became standouts at Miami, joining 2012 first team All-ACC selection Leonard Hankerson and 1987 National Champion, three-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael “The Playmaker” Irvin. Much like Hankerson and Irvin before him, Dorsett is a key weapon in Miami’s potent offense. The 5-foot-10 receiver with elite speed has tallied over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns in his Hurricanes career. Dorsett earned playing time as a freshman, playing in all 12 games in the 2011 season. He caught the first touchdown of his career against Duke and earned his first start in that season’s victory over USF. The talented receiver also threw for a 16-yard touchdown on a trick play against then-No. 21 Virginia Tech. While Dorsett flashed his ability as a freshman, the speedy receiver entrenched himself as a vital part of Miami’s offense as a sophomore. Dorsett played in all 12 games at receiver and punt returner, making 10 starts. He led the team with 842 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 58 catches, earning third-team All-ACC honors by Phil Steele. Dorsett played a key role in Miami’s win over Georgia Tech, catching nine balls for 184 yards and a touchdown and earning ACC Receiver of the Weeks honors. A week later, Dorsett followed his big game against the Yellow Jackets with another huge performance, reeling in seven catches for 191 yards and 2 TDs in win vs. NC State, including a game-winning 62-yard TD with 19 seconds remaining. Dorsett also tallied six catches for 103 yards and touchdown against Virginia and ties a single-game school record with 12 catches for 111 yards against USF. The big play threat has continued his success as a junior, catching a 52-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Miami’s 21-16 win over No. 9/12 Florida. Dorsett also hauled in a 40-yard touchdown in the Canes’ 45-30 win over Georgia Tech. Make sure to keep your eye on No. 4 and don’t blink because Dorsett will continue to use his game-changing speed to help the Canes throughout the remainder of their ACC schedule.

Frank Gore (San Francisco) – 25 carries, 101 yards Entering Sunday, the 49ers had a 26-7 record in games when running back Frank Gore rushed for 100 yards or more. They tacked on another win to that record Sunday, riding the shoulders of their ninth-year running back’s 101-yard performance to a 32-20 win over divisional rival Arizona. Gore, who ranks third among active running backs and 33rd all-time in career rushing yards (9,316), had a vintage grinding performance. He is less than 700 yards short of becoming the first running back in San Francisco history, and just the 27th in league history, to eclipse 10,000 career rushing yards.
Football Debuts at No. 7 in BCS Rankings
The Miami Hurricanes debuted at No. 7 in the first BCS rankings released Sunday night on ESPN. Miami is the second-highest ACC team in the BCS standings behind only Florida State (No. 2). Earlier on Sunday, Miami (6-0, 2-0 ACC) climbed three spots to No. 7 in the latest AP Top 25 and five spots to No. 6 in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 Coaches polls. Miami is also No. 7 in the Harris Interactive Poll. Both the Harris Interactive and USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls are part of the BCS ranking formula. Miami is in the BCS rankings for the first time since Nov. 24, 2010, when the Hurricanes were No. 24. It is Miami’s first BCS Top 10 ranking since Oct. 18, 2009, when it was No. 10. Sunday’s ranking is Miami’s highest in the BCS since the Hurricanes were No. 3 on Nov. 13, 2005. Miami extended its winning streak to eight games with a 27-23 road win Oct. 17 at North Carolina. Miami’s eight-game winning streak is its longest since winning 10 straight over the 2003 and 2004 seasons (final four of 2003, first six of 2004). The Hurricanes will look for their first 7-0 start since the 2003 season when they host Wake Forest (4-3, 2-2 ACC) at noon Oct. 26 on ESPNU. Fewer than 7,000 tickets remain for Miami’s Oct. 26 home game vs. Wake Forest, which is also UM Employee Day. Ashley Flinn Named ACC Player of the Week
For her two-goal performance in a 2-0 upset of No. 3 Notre Dame, junior striker Ashley Flinn was named ACC Player of the Week Tuesday. Flinn, who leads the team with eight goals this season, delivered what proved to be her fourth game-winner of the year in the 52nd minute. She tacked on another goal in the 84th minute, capping her third multi-goal performance of the season with a signature strike from the top of the penalty box. Flinn’s eight tallies are the most for a Hurricane since Kate Howarth struck for 11 in 2011. “When the pressure is on, she wants the team on her shoulders to put us ahead,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “What people don’t see is that Ashley has been coming out for extra training. The goals that she scored were things we’ve been working with a group of our forwards.” The Romeo, Mich., native has developed a penchant for scoring timely goals. Before Sunday’s win, Flinn had already recorded an overtime winner against Jacksonville (Aug. 25), a hat trick against Cleveland State (Sept. 6), and an 89th-minute goal to beat Florida Atlantic (Sept. 8). The goals were her first two in six conference matches this season. “It’s been an up-and-down year for some of our offensive-minded contributors,” Monroe said. “Ashley started out strong, then hit a little bit of a lull. Getting those two fantastic goals, both of which she fully earned, was good for her confidence and to prove to herself she can compete in the conference.” Flinn also played a crucial role in Miami’s last upset of a ranked foe, scoring in the final seconds of a 1-0 victory over No. 1 Florida State in the team’s 2012 regular season finale. “For her, she finally realized this is her comfort zone, and that if she does get an opportunity, she really needs to perform and finish so that our team can find success,” Monroe said. “She has been great for us.” The recognition marked the career-first weekly award for Flinn.

@MiamiWBB at ACC Women’s Basketball Media Day
Miami Hurricanes head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier, senior Krystal Saunders and junior Suriya McGuire spent Wednesday at ACC Women’s Basketball Media Day. The Hurricanes were picked to finish ninth in the league by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the league’s 15 head coaches. Canes at Operation ACC Basketball
The reigning conference champion University of Miami men’s basketball team has been predicted to finish 12th out of 15 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, as announced by the league during Operation ACC Basketball in Charlotte, N.C., Wednesday. Duke was picked to win the league, followed by Syracuse and North Carolina. One year ago, Miami was selected fourth by the coaches and fifth by the media in preseason ACC polls, but finished the year as the regular season and tournament champion. At that same Operation Basketball, zero Hurricanes were selected for preseason All-ACC teams. At the end of the championship season, Jim Larrañaga was Coach of the Year, Shane Larkin was Player of the Year (coaches), and Durand Scott was Defensive Player of the Year. Miami is the only ACC team with zero returning starters. Additionally, Miami lost its six top players, who started 174 combined games. Rion Brown is the only Hurricane to start any games (6) last season, so the Canes return 6-of-180 starts, which is 3.3 percent. Miami returns 13.3 percent of points scored (9.3 ppg), 14.2 percent of rebounds (5.1 rpg) and 1.0 percent of assists (1.1 per game), all the lowest in the ACC. Ten scholarship players will be available for the 2013-14 campaign, as two players will redshirt after transferring from Division I schools. Miami has six seniors this season, following last year’s class of five, who all earned their academic degree. Two transfers join the Canes this season in James Kelly, who averaged 17.9 ppg and 10.0 rpg in two JC seasons and Donnavan Kirk, who played 54 games for DePaul the past two seasons, leading the team in blocked shots. Miami’s freshman class includes: Deandre Burnett - third in the nation in scoring as a senior with 37 ppg; Manu Lecomte - Belgium second division player; and Davon Reed - 2,000 point scorer who averaged 24 ppg as a senior. With Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse joining the ACC last July 1, the conference now boasts 15 members. In addition to an 18-game regularseason conference schedule, the 61st annual ACC Tournament will consist of 14 games and will be played from Wednesday through Sunday (March 12-16). Overcoming Adversity: Malcolm Lewis
Every great athlete has to overcome adversity at some point in their career. Some, like Michael Jordan, were cut from the team at a young age, but persevered and reached their full potential. Others, like former Canes standout running back Frank Gore, battled back from injuries to return to greatness. While these talented individuals have all faced different forms of adversity, they all had the drive and determination to get past whatever difficulty was presented to them and reach the peak of their respective sport. Malcolm Lewis hopes to join that elite group of athletes and the Miramar, Fla., native is already on his way towards making that dream a reality. Lewis, who hails from Miramar High School, made an impact from the moment he set foot on the University of Miami campus a year ago. The receiver with a knack for making big plays did just that in his first collegiate game at Boston College, catching four passes for a season-high 42 yards and the first touchdown of his Hurricanes career. Lewis’ impressive play early on earned him a start against Bethune-Cookman, the first of his collegiate career. But everything changed for Lewis in Miami’s Week 4 matchup at Georgia Tech. The standout freshman’s season came to an end against the Yellow Jackets when he suffered a dislocated left ankle injury. “I remember Coach Golden leaning over me and holding me down tight,” Lewis said. “I really couldn’t see my ankle.” Lewis, who seemed destined for stardom early in his freshman year, had his 2012 season cut short by a gruesome injury. But Lewis is not the type of person to let adversity prevent him from achieving his goals. The Miramar native who worked so hard to make an impact as a freshman, diverted all of his focus and energy towards his rehab to make sure he would be ready to play as a sophomore. Lewis made a triumphant return to action in Miami’s spring game, catching a touchdown pass from Stephen Morris. The entire Hurricanes team surrounded him to celebrate the score and congratulate Lewis on his speedy recovery. While the play in the spring game showed progress, his first true test came August 3 when Miami opened football camp. Lewis was making cuts and running full speed, looking like the player who shined in four games as a freshman a year ago. Following that first day of football camp, Lewis reflected on what it was like to overcome such a tough injury. The sophomore wideout knows he put forth a lot of effort to get back on the field, but he also knows he could not have done it without the incredible support system that surrounds him at Miami. “The way my team supported me when I was down on the field showed how much our team cares for each other,” Lewis said. “We love each other like brothers. Throughout the whole process, they’ve been there for me to push me through rehab. I want to thank the trainers, too, for helping me through the process.” Lewis’ hard work and dedication have helped him return to game action less than a year after he suffered his serious injury. The second-year player collected his first official post-injury catch in Miami’s victory over Savannah State. The nine-yard gain not only helped the Canes earn another win. It also served as proof that Lewis had overcome the adversity he faced a year ago and was on track towards returning to the top of his game.

Gunter, Johnson Collect ACC Weekly Honors
Miami Hurricanes junior Ladarius Gunter and sophomore Duke Johnson were named the ACC Defensive Back and Specialist of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. It was Gunter’s first ACC weekly award, while Johnson picked up his sixth honor and first Specialist of the Week designation. Johnson was a five-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree as a freshman in 2012. Gunter and Johnson are the fifth and sixth Hurricane to earn ACC Player of the Week honors in 2013. Brandon Linder was named CoOffensive Lineman of the Week on Sept. 3, junior Denzel Perryman was named Linebacker of the Week and junior Anthony Chickillo was named Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week on Sept. 9 and freshman Stacy Coley was named Co-Rookie of the Week on Sept. 30. Gunter recorded seven tackles, including one for a loss, and had a key interception return for a touchdown in Miami’s 45-30 win over Georgia Tech. Gunter’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown helped seal Miami’s ACC win over the Yellow Jackets and extended the Hurricanes’ win streak to seven games. Gunter is the first Miami defensive back to return an interception for a TD since Ray-Ray Armstrong did so in 2010, and the first for any Miami player since Denzel Perryman’s 41-yard return in the 2012 season opener at Boston College. Gunter is one of three Hurricanes tied for the team lead with two interceptions. Johnson finished with a game-high 325 all-purpose yards in Miami’s 45-30 win, his eighth career 200-yard game and second career 300-yard game. Johnson tallied 114 kick return yards on four tries and a game-high 184 rushing yards. Johnson leads the Hurricanes with 572 rushing yards on 84 carries (6.8 yards per rush) and 954 all-purpose yards.

Testaverde Set for NFF Hall of Fame Salute
Miami Hurricanes great and 1986 Heisman Trophy winning QB Vinny Testaverde will be honored during Saturday’s game with a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute. Testaverde will also be the honorary captain for the Miami Hurricanes game vs. Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for noon ET on ESPNU. The NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute program is a hallowed tradition that began with the inaugural class in 1951, and to this day the salutes remain the first of numerous activities in each inductee’s Hall of Fame experience. During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each inductee returns to his alma mater to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will remain on permanent display at the institution. The events take place on the field during a home game, and many inductees cite the experience as the ultimate capstone to their careers, providing them one more chance to take the field and hear the crowd roar their name. One of the greatest quarterbacks in school history, Testaverde was Miami’s first Heisman Trophy winner in 1986, while also winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Trophy. He led the Hurricanes to three bowl berths, including the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, which determined the national champion. Testaverde, who was a redshirt on Miami’s 1983 national championship team, went 23-3 as a starter playing for legendary coaches Howard Schnellenberger and Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson. Tampa Bay selected Testaverde as the No. 1 overall selection in the 1987 NFL Draft, and his pro career spanned 21 seasons with seven different teams. The 1998 All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl selection finished his NFL career seventh all-time in passing yards (46,233) and eighth in touchdowns (275). The Elmont, N.Y., native currently resides in Florida where he plays an active role with the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa. Testaverde remains among only four Hurricanes to have their jerseys retired at Miami. Testaverde will become seventh Miami Hurricane player and 10th overall to be enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame – Bennie Blades (2006), Don Bosseler (1990), Andy Gustafson (1985), Jack Harding (1980), Ted Hendricks (1987), Jimmy Johnson (2012), Russell Maryland (2011), Gino Torretta (2009) and Arnold Tucker (2008) The 2013 College Football Hall of Fame FBS Class will be inducted Dec. 10, 2013, at the 56th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. They will be honored guests Jan. 2, 2014, at the National Hall of Fame Salute in New Orleans at the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The Hurricanes will look for their first 7-0 start since the 2003 season when they host Wake Forest (4-3, 2-2 ACC) on Saturday. Soccer Draws Eagles After being held scoreless in their previous two matches, the Miami Hurricanes exploded for three goals in a double overtime draw with Boston College Sunday. Against one of the conference’s better clubs, Miami earned a crucial point in its ultimate search of an ACC Championship berth and a third-straight appearance in the NCAA postseason. “We went over a lot of passing patterns,” Monroe said after the game. “I think we’ve engrained it in their heads. They were in bad habits, and we’ve been working a ton on good movements off the ball, good movements when another player motions, and I think it all really clicked today.” Senior Tara Schwitter, who netted her second goal of the season on a clever free kick from the fringes of the box, said the team’s togetherness and collective effort keyed the result. “All the subs who came in did their jobs. From the top of the forward line all the way to Emily [Lillard] in
goal, everyone clicked today,” she said. “And when we click as a team, we do a really, really good job and can play with anybody. We need to keep the momentum going from here.” The slate doesn’t get any easier for Monroe’s Hurricanes, who have a matchup with undefeated and top-ranked Virginia (16-0-0) Thursday in Charlottesville, Va., before a showdown with sixthranked Virginia Tech (13-1-2) Sunday in Blacksburg. But a spirited effort from the Hurricanes, who came back from one goal down on two separate occasions in the BC match, has Monroe excited. “I think we have learned a lot. There were definitely games this season when we did put our heads down and got back into old, bad habits,” she said. “If you want to play in the ACC and want to paly here [at Miami], everything matters - every inch matters, every second matters, every movement. I think they took it to heart, to have no regrets. They don’t want their season to end.”

Hester, who hadn’t returned a punt for a score since Nov. 13, 2011, ranks ninth all-time in punt return yardage (3,105) and No. 19 in combined return yardage (7,788). Hester escaped a would-be Redskins tackler and sprinted across the field with just over six minutes before halftime, taking it all the way back down the near sideline with a convoy of blockers in front of him to tie the game up at 17-17. From Seminole to Cane: Alex Johnson Tallahassee native Alex Johnson has become one of the top players in UM history It’s rare for a Hurricane to grow up a fan of the Florida State Seminoles. The two schools have been rivals for decades and the rivalry has been passed down from generation to generation. But right side Alex Johnson grew up rooting for the garnet and gold. A Tallahasse, Fla. native, Johnson spent much of her youth at Tully Gym supporting her hometown team. After growing up a Seminole, Johnson has become a Hurricane. The senior recently returned to the Noles’ home court for the final time donning Miami’s orange and green. “It was bittersweet,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely enjoyable being in front of my friends and family, but it stinks because it was my last time there and we didn’t come away with the win.” Johnson shined in her hometown, recording a double-double with 10 kills and 11 assists, but the Canes lost in four sets. “I always enjoy playing there because I grew up watching FSU play there and dreaming that I would play college volleyball one day,” Johnson said. Her dream became a reality when she first stepped on the court on Aug. 27, 2010 against UT-Arlington. That match was the first of an impressive streak. Johnson has started every match of her collegiate career, 112 starts heading into the Oct. 25 match at Wake Forest.

“When I first got here, I never could have imagined that I would be starting as a freshman,” Johnson said. “It was a huge surprise when I came in and hard work got me on the court and where I am today. I never could have imagined being where I am today when I was younger.” Johnson has flourished as a player, earning All-ACC honors and AVCA All-Reagion honors after the 2012 season. She was also named Honorable Mention AVCA All-America and was selected to the 2013 Preseason All-ACC team. Her individual accolades are meaningful, but Johnson is most appreciative of what she has helped the Hurricanes achieve as a team. “I’ve had a successful career looking back,” Johnson said. “We’ve made it to the tournament every year and been close to winning an ACC championship.” In her final collegiate season, Johnson still has a lot she hopes to accomplish and she will not quit until she does. “There are still those little things you wish you would have won,” Johnson said. “This year I am looking forward to helping us make it back to the tournament and chasing an ACC title.” For more information or to purchase tickets, visit CanesTix.com or call 305-2842263.

With a ranking that had plummeted out of the top 100 and the program having no recent reputation of winning, Rizzo pulled out her LPGA card and went to work. “I know what it feels like to stand over a putt and have to make it to win a tournament and $250,000 if it goes in,” said Rizzo, a four-time winner on the LPGA and the 1982 Rookie of the Year.
Now in her fourth year at the helm in Coral Gables, Rizzo has her alma mater ranked 39th in the country, a substantial improvement over recent years. Miami’s low points came in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, when the Hurricanes finished 117th and 116th, respectively, in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. “It’s kind of like they let golf fall off the map,” Rizzo said. While at Miami, Rizzo was a standout amateur, winning the World Amateur, Trans National, Eastern Am and Mexican Am titles in 1980. She earned victories at the North & South Amateur, South Atlantic Amateur and Harder Hall in ’81. She also nearly captured the LPGA’s Florida Lady Citrus in Orlando as an amateur, losing in a fiveperson playoff. Read more >>

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT NLI Signing The culmination of the recruiting process takes place when a prospect signs the National Letter of Intent (NLI) with their chosen institution. By signing the NLI, the prospect becomes officially committed to the institution they sign with. For many of our teams at the University of Miami, November 13th marks the first point in a prospective student-athlete’s career that he or she is able to sign an NLI. During the early signing period in November, all sports except football, soccer and track/cross country are allowed to sign prospects to NLIs. From November 13th to November 20th, the University of Miami will be receiving NLI’s faxed, e-mailed or mailed by prospective student-athletes who are committing to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UM. This is a good time to examine some of the most frequently asked questions regarding a prospect who has signed a National Letter of Intent. Q. How long is a prospective student-athlete considered to be a prospect? A. A prospective student-athlete remains a prospect even after signing a NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. The prospect, the University, and boosters are all governed by the recruiting regulations until the prospect reports for regular season practice, attends their first day of classes in any regular term, or attends an institutional orientation session that is open to all incoming students within 14 calendar day prior to the opening day of classes (i.e., fall or spring). Q. Is it permissible for boosters to contact a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No on- or off-campus contact (including cards, email, texts or telephone calls) may be made to prospects or their parents by boosters. Q. Is it permissible for a booster to employ a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. Yes. NCAA rules permit prospective student-athletes who have signed NLI’s to be employed by boosters during the summer following their graduation from high school, prep school, or junior college. Prior to employing prospects, however, boosters must check with the coaching staff and the compliance office to make sure all regulations are being followed. Q Is it permissible for a booster to arrange summer housing for a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No. NCAA rules prohibit boosters from making housing arrangements for student-athletes or prospects, even if they have signed an NLI to attend the University of Miami. For example, it is not permissible to offer reduced-rate rental opportunities to prospects. Q. Is it permissible for a booster to assist a prospect who has signed an NLI with precollege expenses? A. No. Neither the University of Miami nor its boosters are permitted to offer, provide, or arrange financial assistance to cover a prospect’s expenses for any period prior to their enrollment. This applies even to those prospects who have signed an NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. Please remember that the same prohibitions against the provision of extra benefits to currently-enrolled student-athletes also extend to all prospects, their parents and relatives. NCAA rules are often very complicated so if you find yourself in a position where you have questions please do not hesitate to contact us. “Ask Before You Act” by contacting the University of Miami Compliance Office directly. Arrington’s All-Around Excellence Senior leader a star on the race course and in her coursework at Miami Lindsi Arrington has made huge strides on the track and in the classroom. The senior has been a key member of Miami’s women’s track and field and cross country programs. The Woodbridge, Va., native is off to a strong start in her final cross country season, racking up four Top 10 finishes in five races this year. Arrington placed second at the WA Collegiate Invitational with a time of 13:14.28 and finished ninth at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational 6K, running a 21:45.57. Following a 12th place finish at the Charlotte Invitational 6K, Arrington turned in her best run of the year at the Disney Cross Country Classic. The senior, who placed fourth with a time of 17:36.23, shattered her previous personal-best by 43 seconds and moved into second place on Miami’s women’s 5K list. Teammate Alaine Tate also shined at Disney, beating her personal best by 45 seconds with a time of 18:29.72. The two talented runners drew praise from Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths. “I don’t have enough words to say about Lindsi and Alaine,” Griffiths said following the record-setting day. “Besides leading the team today, they ran they second and seventh-best times in school history. I look forward to seeing how they translate their fitness into the conference meet.” Arrington’s success on the cross country course continued at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational 6K, where she placed 43

second with a time of 21:50.36. She has been Miami’s top women’s finisher in every race this season. “Lindsi did exactly what we wanted her to do,” Griffiths said after her second place finish at UCF. “She got stronger each kilometer and put herself in position to win with a kilometer to go.” In the classroom, Arrington boasts a 3.765 GPA, while double majoring in communications and political science. She has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll six times in her collegiate career. Arrington has also been named to the Provost’s Honor Roll and was named All-ACC Academic in 2013. She was honored as the Student-Athlete of the Game during Miami’s football game against Georgia Tech. Following the completion of cross country season this fall, Arrington will prepare for her final collegiate track and field seasons. The middle distance runner has had plenty of success on the track, earning 11 Top 10 finishes as a junior. Arrington, who ran a personal-best 2:13.42 in the 800m a year ago, placed eighth in the women’s mile run at last year’s ACC Indoor Championships with a personal-best time of 4:54.95. The talented runner, who has three victories in her collegiate career, will look to add to her impressive résumé in her final season donning Miami’s orange and green.

JaCee Jarnagin has made the most of his senior season. The Holcomb, Kan., native has been Miami’s top male runner in 2013, finishing first among the Hurricane men in four of their five meets to date. Jarnagin has earned a trio of Top 10 finsihes, placing second at the WA Invitational, sixth at the Charlotte Invitational and ninth at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational.
TRACK NEWCOMERS The Canes added seven talented student-athletes to a talent-rich track and field program, four women and three men. Courtney Kennedy, Anthonia Moore, Precious Ogunleye, Shakima Wimbley, Carlos Mangum, Daniel Polinski and Gian Ragonessi are the newest additions who will make their Hurricane debuts in the spring.
2014 HOME TRACK MEETS After a challenging indoor schedule, Miami opens its 2014 outdoor season with the first of three home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from on March 21-22. They will also host the Miami Invitational on March 29 and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 12. “It is always great to compete in front of our home crowd,” Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem said. “Having three home meets gives us an opportunity to showcase not only our team, but also bring quality track and field meets to the university campus and South Florida community.”
McCormack Named ACC Diver of the Week
For her strong performance in a dual meet with Florida Gulf Coast, junior All-American Kara McCormack was named ACC Diver of the Week Tuesday. McCormack, who captured first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events in Saturday’s matchup with the Eagles, impressed despite her team’s disappointing defeat. McCormack easily outpaced the 3-meter field (360.23) and also edged out teammate Thea Vock for first in the 1-meter event (311.55). In just over two years in Coral Gables, McCormack has dominated her competition for head coach Randy Ableman’s diving team. The reigning ACC Women’s Diver of the Year earned her career-first All-America recognition in 2013, finishing sixth in the platform finals (286.20) at the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis. She earned Honorable Mention AllAmerica recognition as a freshman in the 3-meter finals. McCormack, who was named 2012-13 University of Miami Athletics Department Underclassman Scholar of the Year, won her first conference title in 2013 with a first-place finish in the platform finals at the ACC Championships. The Austin, Texas, native and mathematics major carries a 3.98 GPA in the classroom.

ProCanes: Devin Hester
by Max Strauss HurricaneSports.com: Even with your busy schedule as a professional football player in the NFL, do you still follow the Hurricanes on Saturdays? Devin Hester: Yes, absolutely. I do every year, and its something that I get a kick out of. HurricaneSports.com: What did you think of the team’s win over the Gators? Devin Hester: It was a big win. We have two former Gators on the Bears, and this game was for bragging rights in our locker room. HurricaneSports.com: What is like having another ProCane, D.J. Williams in the locker room? Devin Hester: I know that D.J. Williams has my back. He is also someone that can brag with you at the same time. He knows more about the Canes because he was there before me. It helps to have an extra guy in the locker room that is a Miami Hurricane. HurricaneSports.com: How far do you think Al Golden and the coaching staff can take the Hurricanes this season? Devin Hester: Looking at their schedule, they have a good shot of winning the ACC championship. The only competition is Florida State and Clemson. God forbid, if there are no key injuries, we have a shot at the ACC Championship. HurricaneSports.com: Are there former Hurricanes teammates that you are still close with and speak with regularly? If so, who are they? Devin Hester: Every now and then, I talk with Tavares Gooden, Anthony Reddick, Roscoe Parrish, Kareem Brown, Terrell Walden, and Sinorice Moss. Edgerrin James and I communicate a lot. HurricaneSports.com: What does #NFLU mean to you? Devin Hester: It is the bond that we built there, but it is also [about] the older class. I have had a few years in the Pro Bowl and a lot of the U fellows are at the Pro Bowl, so I hung out with Reggie Wayne, Brandon Meriweather, Vince Wilfork. I look forward to that. HurricaneSports.com: How do you think being a Miami Hurricane has prepared you for life in the NFL? Devin Hester: It demanded us to compete at a high level day in and day out. The coaches did a great job getting our head on the right track. Hats off to strength and conditioning coach, Andreu Swasey. We spend a lot of time with him, and he took us underneath his wing. He trained us and guided us. HurricaneSports.com: Do you have any favorite memories from your time as a Hurricane? If so, which/what are they? Devin Hester: It was the times that we were working hard in the weight room, and making it fun at the same time. HurricaneSports.com: Anything else to tell the Canes community? Devin Hester: All of the alumni are looking for the youth to come and make the U become dominant as they were once were. We can’t do it without them. We support them.

Benjamin Named AFC Player of the Week
For his record-breaking performance in a win over Buffalo, Cleveland Browns returner Travis Benjamin was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday. Benjamin broke a 20-year old franchise record for single-game punt return yards in his team’s 37-24 victory. The Belle Glade, Fla., native recorded returns of 57 and 79 yards, the latter resulting in a key touchdown, en route to a 179-yard performance that broke Eric Metcalf’s franchise record set in 1993 (166). Benjamin’s 79-yard return for a score, which included broken tackles and an impressive spin move, represented the second-longest of his career – just short of a 93-yard score he recorded his rookie season. Benjamin’s 25.6 punt return average against Buffalo is the highest by any NFL player in a game this season (minimum five attempts), and he is the only NFL player with two 50-yard punt returns in a contest this season. Through Week Five, Benjamin ranks second in the NFL with a 15.1-yard punt-return average. This is Benjamin’s second Special Teams Player of the Week Award, having previously won the award in Week 14 of the 2012 season. It also marks the third weekly award for #ProCanes this season, joining Devin Hester (Week Two) and Jimmy Graham (Week Four).
