Meier Signs Extension, Announces Gift Plan

The University of Miami and head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier have agreed to terms on a contract extension through the 2021 season. Meier, who has been at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Miami since 2005, led the Hurricanes to their fifth straight postseason appearance this past season. One of the premier basketball coaches in the country, Meier has proven her commitment to the university and her student-athletes throughout her career at Miami and has served as an ambassador of the University of Miami and its athletic department. “We are thrilled that Coach Meier has agreed to lead our women’s basketball program through the 2021 season,” Director of Athletics Blake James said. “Katie embodies the values of this institution, and her dedication to her student-athletes, this university and our community is unmatched.” In conjunction with her contract extension, Meier has announced her plans for a $75,000 contribution to women’s athletics at the University of Miami. “When this contract extension was presented to me, my first thought was of gratitude and excitement to continue my career here at the University of Miami,” Meier said. “At the same moment, I thought it was the proper time to show a great appreciation to President Shalala, Blake James and [Deputy AD / Senior Woman Administrator] Jennifer Strawley. I feel like I have deep roots here and would like to give back. I want our young women to be able to share the incredible impact that athletics has had on my life. I believe that this gift is the best way to do it. “ Meier, who has proven her dedication and generosity towards the university on several occasions, has challenged the South Florida and women’s basketball communities to give to Hurricanes women’s athletics. “Today, I would also like to challenge the University of Miami and South Florida communities to jump on board and support all the wonderful things that are happening within our department and within women’s athletics,” she said. “Participating in sports does make a long-term difference in a woman’s life. The opportunities that collegiate athletics creates for our student-athletes allow them to grow and learn as members of our university community, and most importantly provide an unbelievable foundation for success in life.” Entering her 10th season as the head coach of the Hurricanes, Meier has posted 163 wins with three NCAA tournament appearances in her time in Coral Gables. In 2013, Meier was named a co-recipient of the USA Basketball National Coach of the Year award after leading the USA U19 team to a gold medal and perfect 9-0 record at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships. “Katie’s commitment to our entire athletics program and her generous financial commitment to women’s athletics demonstrate her belief in Miami and her understanding of the incredibly positive impact athletics has on the lives of young people and in particular young woman,” Strawley said. “Katie benefited from athletics in her life and truly recognizes the positive values it instills in young women. Her leadership, contagious energy and true commitment set an example for our entire university community.” The University of Miami and Coach Meier would like to thank the following donors for their leadership contribution in support of Meier’s challenge and women’s basketball: Warren & Marilyn Bateman, Stuart & Linda Price, Michael & Donna Silverman (in honor of Edith Bleich), and BJ Abolt. For more information on how to participate in Coach Meier’s Challenge and support women’s athletics at the University of Miami, please call the Hurricane Club at 305-284-6699. 17

Artie Burns Represents for Hometown Canes

By David Villavicencio, HurricaneSports.com The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Each week in the 2014 season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is on Miami, Fla., native Artie Burns. Artie Burns has been an impact student-athlete at the University of Miami since he arrived on campus prior to the 2013 football season. Possessing a rare combination of size, elite speed and athleticism, Burns is the type of gifted talent that coaches dream of. The 6-foot, 196-pound defensive back from Miami Northwestern Senior High was recruited by nearly every college football program in the country. As a standout senior for the Bulls, Burns tallied 72 tackles, four sacks, six pass breakups, two interceptions and had two kick returns for touchdowns. Burns was a four-star recruit by ESPNU, 247Sports.com, Rivals.com, Scout.com and MaxPreps.com and was named a 2013 Under Armour AllAmerican. Beyond his accomplishments on the football field, Burns was also the nation’s top high school hurdler. A three-time Florida State 3A 110m hurdle champion, Burns also won the 300m hurdles at the 2013 3A State Meet and had the fastest 110m and 300m hurdles times in the nation during his junior season at Northwestern. While Burns’ high school accomplishments meant that he would have lofty expectations to live up to at any university in the country, the fact that he came from a football powerhouse like Northwestern meant that he was following in the footsteps of Hurricane standouts like Melvin Bratton, Brett Perriman, Nate Webster, Vernon Carey and Sean Spence. But the high expectations did not deter Burns from wanting to become a Hurricane and follow the path of so many great Northwestern legends that went on to become Hurricane stars. Burns played in 11 of 13 games as a freshman a year ago, splitting time on defense and special teams. He recorded 17 tackles and three pass breakups, while averaging 26.1 yards on 10 kick returns. He snagged his first career interception in Miami’s road win over Pitt and forced a fumble in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Louisville. But Burns’ biggest highlight as a freshman came when he blocked a field goal that was returned for touchdown in the 27-23 road win on Oct. 17 at UNC. Following a strong freshman campaign on the football field, Burns continued to make headlines on the track. He claimed the 60m high hurdles title at the ACC Indoor Championships and broke a 38-year-old American Junior record, set by Washington’s Robert Gaines in 1976 and matched by South Carolina’s Jason Richardson in 2005. It took the Miami native just 7.68 seconds to blaze down the track at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational and into the record books, besting Gaines and Richardson’s time of 7.70 by two-tenths of a second. After competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60 hurdles, Burns returned his focus to spring football and preparing for his sophomore season at ‘The U.’ In 2014, Burns has been a key contributor on Miami’s defense, starting seven of Miami’s eight games. He set a career high with six tackles against Nebraska and added five tackles and one pass breakup a week later against Duke. Burns recorded his first career sack and had a game-high three pass breakups in Miami’s win over Cincinnati and he had two tackles in a key road victory over Virginia Tech last Thursday. He will look to continue to make an impact this week as Miami hosts North Carolina at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. 19

Three @CanesFootball Players EarnUniforms ACC Honors Hurricanes Unveil 2014 Football

Following Miami’s 30-6 win over Virginia Tech last week in Blacksburg, a trio of Hurricanes were recognized with ACC Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday. Junior running back Duke Johnson was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week, senior center Shane McDermott was named Offensive Lineman of the Week, while sophomore linebacker Jermaine Grace took home Co-Linebacker of the Week honors. Johnson delivered the most dominant performance of his three-year career against the Hokies, totaling a career-best 249 yards on 24 carries. He scored two touchdowns in the win, and tied the third-best single-game rushing mark in program history with 249 yards on the ground. He also moved past the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the first season in his career with the performance. McDermott, who has served as Miami’s starting center for the past three seasons, anchored a Hurricanes offensive line that paved the way for 456 total yards in Blacksburg. McDermott and his fellow linemen were crucial to Miami’s running game, which produced 364 yards and two runners that set career high marks in the win: Johnson (249) and sophomore Gus Edwards, who ran for 115 yards. Grace had a dominant all-around game against the Hokies, posting four tackles (three solo), recording the first two fumble recoveries of his career and his second sack of the season in the win. Grace has sacks in back-to-back games, and ranks fourth on the team with 36 tackles so far this season. He also has 4.5 tackles for loss, the second-highest total among all Hurricanes defensive players. The Hurricanes host North Carolina Saturday in the Homecoming game, which has been declared a “#KellyTough Green Out.” All Canes fans are encouraged to wear green to the game to show their support in the fight against cancer.

The culmination of the recruiting process takes place when a prospect signs the National Letter of Intent (NLI) with their chosen institution. By signing the NLI, the prospect becomes officially committed to the institution they sign with. For many of our teams at the University of Miami, November 12th marks the first point in a prospective student-athlete’s career that he or she is able to sign an NLI. During the early signing period in November, all sports except football, soccer and track/cross country are allowed to sign prospects to NLIs. From November 12th to November 19th, the University of Miami will be receiving NLI’s faxed, e-mailed or mailed by prospective student-athletes who are committing to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UM. This is a good time to examine some of the most frequently asked questions regarding a prospect who has signed a National Letter of Intent. Q. How long is a prospective student-athlete considered to be a prospect? A. A prospective student-athlete remains a prospect even after signing a NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. The prospect, the University, and boosters are all governed by the recruiting regulations until the prospect reports for regular season practice, attends their first day of classes in any regular term, or attends an institutional orientation session that is open to all incoming students within 14 calendar day prior to the opening day of classes (i.e., fall or spring). Q. Is it permissible for boosters to contact a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No on- or off-campus contact (including cards, email, texts or telephone calls) may be made to prospects or their parents by boosters. Q Is it permissible for a booster to arrange summer housing for a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No. NCAA rules prohibit boosters from making housing arrangements for student-athletes or prospects, even if they have signed an NLI to attend the University of Miami. For example, it is not permissible to offer reduced-rate rental opportunities to prospects. Q. Is it permissible for a booster to assist a prospect who has signed an NLI with precollege expenses? A. No. Neither the University of Miami nor its boosters are permitted to offer, provide, or arrange financial assistance to cover a prospect’s expenses for any period prior to their enrollment. This applies even to those prospects who have signed an NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. Please contact the University of Miami Athletics Compliance Department with any questions regarding NCAA, ACC or University of Miami rules or regulations at athleticscompliance@miami.edu or 305-2842692. Kelly Grand Marshal of Homecoming

Cancer-free and #KellyTough, Hurricanes football great Jim Kelly will serve as Grand Marshal for the 2014 Alumni Weekend and Homecoming festivities on the University of Miami campus. Kelly will serve as Honorary Captain for the Homecoming football game against North Carolina, which will kick off on Nov. 1. “The University of Miami was and remains an important part of my life,” Kelly said. “My family and I are honored and we look forward to being Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade and Honorary Captain for the Homecoming game.” In conjunction with Kelly’s successful fight against cancer, the Homecoming game against the Tar Heels has been declared a “#KellyTough Green Out.” All Canes fans are encouraged to wear green to the game to show their support in the fight against cancer. “We are thrilled and thankful to welcome a Hurricane great home!” said Donna Arbide, Associate Vice President of the UM Alumni Association. “We expect a packed house of people eager to honor Jim and his family.” Kelly, his wife Jill and their daughters Erin and Camryn will all be taking part in the exciting weekend of festivities, set for Oct. 31 – Nov. 1. “We are thrilled and honored to welcome Jim, Jill, Erin and Camryn back to Miami, and we are so grateful that they can join us for Homecoming weekend,” Athletics Director Blake James said. “Jim represents everything that we strive to achieve at UM: excellence, character, compassion and strength. His remarkable life’s journey is an inspiration for all of us.” A four-year letterman from 1979-1982, Kelly is widely credited with beginning a tradition at Miami that led the school to be known as “Quarterback U.” Kelly led Miami to its first bowl appearance in 14 years in 1981, guiding the Hurricanes to a Peach Bowl victory over Virginia Tech and earning Offensive MVP honors in the win. Under Kelly’s direction at quarterback, Miami’s signature Peach Bowl win is credited with jumpstarting the Hurricanes to become the “Team of the 1980’s”, with the program achieving unprecedented success during the decade. “Jim Kelly to me is as much responsible for rescuing the University of Miami football program and athletic department as anyone,” said offensive line coach Art Kehoe, who played on the 1979 and 1980 teams with Kelly. “So many people have been important to this program, but Jim Kelly was a guy that took us from being ready to drop football to being a national championship contender and having prominence again. He was such a tough guy and such a leader. That’s how he was the whole time he was here. He always wanted to fight and scrap, always trying to compete and win. For me, no one can be the Grand Marshal of our Homecoming ceremonies better than Jim Kelly.” As the starting quarterback in 1981, Kelly led Miami to a 17-14 upset of No. 1 Penn State – considered among the most monumental wins in program history. “What an honor it is to have him be a part of Homecoming, and our tradition here at the University of Miami,” former teammate and current Miami Hurricanes radio analyst Don Bailey Jr. said. “Jim Kelly is going to be recognized as the type of man that he is – not just the type of football player he was.” Kelly was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted into the UM Football Ring of Honor in 2008. “We’re honored that Jim Kelly will be returning to campus as the Grand Marshal of Homecoming ceremonies,” head football coach Al Golden said. “Jim is the definition of a Miami Hurricane. He is a winner and a leader, and his successful fight against cancer serves as an inspiration to all of us.” Kelly began his professional career in the USFL, throwing for 9,842 yards and 83 touchdowns in two seasons with Houston. He earned league MVP honors in 1984. Two years later, Kelly joined the Buffalo Bills and led them to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s. Kelly, who was named to the NFL Pro Bowl five times, still holds a number of Buffalo franchise records, including career yards (35,467), completions (2,874) and passing touchdowns (237). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002, and his No. 12 was retired by Buffalo in 2001. After retiring from professional football in 1997, Kelly and his wife Jill expended much of their energy on their son, Hunter James Kelly. Hunter was diagnosed with globoid cell leukodystrophy (commonly known as “Krabbe disease”) shortly after his birth, and after a brave fight through the age of eight, Hunter passed away. In 1997, while Hunter was still a baby, the Kellys established a non-profit foundation called Hunter’s Hope. In 2004, the foundation became the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute (HJKRI) at the University of Buffalo. “For how he fought cancer, and how he’s raised money for Krabbe Disease and how he’s been an example for every walk of life that is affected by cancer, there is no better example of what a Hurricane stands for than Jim Kelly,” Don Bailey Jr. said. 23

Brown and Maryland to Join Ring of Honor

Two of the greatest players in University of Miami history are set to be inducted into the Hurricanes’ Ring of Honor on Saturday. Jerome Brown and Russell Maryland will become the 17th and 18th members of this prestigious list and will be honored during the first quarter break of Miami’s football game against North Carolina. Jerome Brown, who will be inducted posthumously, was a consensus first-team All-American in 1986 as well as a finalist for both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award. A dominant defensive tackle, Brown had 21 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries during his illustrious career. Brown started a New Year’s Day bowl game four consecutive years at Miami and won one national title. The Brooksville, Fla. native was taken with the ninth pick in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, for whom he was a twotime Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro before his tragic passing in 1991. Brown, a member of the UM Athletic Hall of Fame, recorded 29.5 sacks in his five-year NFL career. Maryland became the first player in University of Miami history to win the prestigious Outland Trophy, taking home the award for the best interior lineman in America in 1990. Maryland was a consensus All-American defensive tackle in 1990 and also was tabbed as the UPI Lineman of the Year. Originally from Chicago, Maryland came to Miami for his college years and posted 279 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks during his career and is a member of both the UM Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. After winning two national championships as a Hurricane, Maryland was selected with the first overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He played in the NFL for 10 years and was chosen for the 1993 Pro Bowl. Maryland won three Super Bowl rings and had 24.5 sacks during his professional career.

Cousineau, Wilfong Earn Medals in Malaysia

Junior Tanner Wilfong and senior Cheyenne Cousineau both earned medals representing Team USA this week at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Malaysia. Wilfong teamed with Zach Cooper to take third in the 10-meter synchro event and capture a bronze medal. Competing in their first international meet together, Wilfong and Cooper scored 348.57 points in the synchronized 10-meter contest to finish third behind China’s Zhang Yangquan and Chen Aisen (448.89) and Malaysia’s Ooi Tze Liang and Chew Yi Wei (386.55). The Americans scored between 63.36 and 68.31 points on all four of their optional dives, with their best score coming on their back 3 ½ tuck in round five. Cousineau and Katrina Young competed together as a synchronized 10-meter team for the first time and finished fourth with 240.84 points but picked up the bronze medal because two Malaysian teams finished in the top three. China’s Ji Siyu and Si Yajie scored 332.70 for the gold, while Malaysia’s Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Joong won silver with 327.84 points. Dhabitah and Loh Zhiayi finished with 293.67 points for third. Hurricanes senior Sam Dorman teamed with Dwight Dumais to place fourth in men’s synchronized 3-meter. Dorman and Dumais finished with 377.52 points in their first 3-meter synchro event together. They scored more than 80 points on both their front 2 ½ with 2 twists and reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists, but a miss for just 49.35 points on their reverse 3 ½ tuck in round five kept them out of the medal hunt. The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team next hosts Illinois State on Nov. 8 in its first home dual meet of the 2014-15 season. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. from the Whitten University Center Pool.

2014 FALL SCHEDULE Oct. 4 Oct. 12 Oct. 18-19 Nov. 1-2

UCF & Barry Scrimmage Head of the Indian Creek Head of the Charles Head of the Hooch

2014 HEAD OF THE HOOCH The University of Miami rowing program seeks to close out the fall strong in its final race of the fall this weekend at the Head of the Hooch. The Canes will look to improve upon last year’s success at the Head of the Hooch. In 2013, Miami earned four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish.

Rowing Shines at Head of Charles Hurricanes place 11th in Club 4+ and 12th in Championship 4+ The University of Miami rowing team competed in the 50th Head of the Charles. The Hurricanes had two entries in the 2014 edition of the Head of the Charles. Miami’s entry in the Club 4+ event raced against the clock and 58 other boats on Saturday, posting a time of 19:08.317 to place 11th overall. Miami’s time was seventh-best among collegiate boats. “The crew executed their race plan and had a great row,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “ They successfully addressed a few things they had been working on in practice and it really showed. Ultimately, they got 11th out of 59 and a fast enough time to get UM a guaranteed entry in the event next year, an awesome result!” The Club 4+ boat was coxed by junior Meghan Hamilton. Senior Devon PhelanPatton sat in the stroke seats, followed by freshman Jane Moore, sophomore Marguerite Bandeian and sophomore Catherine Tayler. Miami’s second entry in the 2014 Head of the Charles raced in the women’s Championship 4+ event Sunday afternoon. Miami placed 12th out of 17 with a time of 19:22.465.

“They had a good race and I felt they handled the conditions well,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Like the other boat yesterday, they were able to implement specific focus points from practice in the race. Overall, we had a great weekend of racing in Boston and can’t wait to come back next year with more boats.” The Championship 4+ boat was coxed by freshman Nicole Rotkovitz, while freshman Taegan Lynch sat in the stroke seat, followed by juniors Hannah Nielsen, Sarah Aschebrock and Caitlin Lowe. The Head of the Charles Regatta is widely acclaimed as the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing over 9,000 athletes around the world to compete in 55 different race events. Boats racing in the Head of the Charles compete against one another and the clock. Following the Head of the Charles, Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes earned four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 1-2.

OCTOBER 31, 2014

“The team is excited to race in Tennessee this weekend,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They have put in many miles of hard work and are now looking forward to racing well to wrap up their fall season. For the novices, it’s their first big regatta where they get to put their new rowing skills to the test and race for UM.” The Hurricanes will feature seven entries in this renowned regatta. Miami’s two Championship 8+ boats are scheduled to race Saturday at 12:20 p.m., while the two Championship 4+ boats race at 5:05 p.m. Saturday. Three Miami boats will run in the Open 8+ race on Sunday at 12:33 p.m. Competitors will start sequentially and race against the clock across a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) course on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park. The Head of the Hooch features the largest number of entries of any major regatta, drawing over 2,000 boats and 6,000 rowers annually. According to Rowing News Magazine, the Regatta “is recognized as one most laid back and hospitable regattas in the country,” and attracts over 15,000 spectators, who come to watch the races and enjoy the surrounding park festivities.

Williams Wins U.S. Push Title Miami Hurricanes legend Lauryn Williams added another championship to her storied athletic career. Williams won the U.S. national bobsled push championship in the women’s brakeman division, finishing her two starts on the wheeled track at Lake Placid in 9.56 seconds. “It was really inspiring to get back out there and be on the track and to win my first push championships,” Williams told the Associated Press. “I think it’s really awesome to see all of the new girls so bubbly and excited about bobsled, and I really relate to that feeling since that was me not even a year ago.” A year ago, Williams was just beginning to dabble with bobsled, a sport completely foreign to her after a lengthy and successful career on the track as a sprinter. Williams, who was recently named as one of 10 members of the 2015 UM Sports Hall of Fame class, is one of the most decorated track athletes in Miami history. A nine-time All-American, Williams won the 100-meter dash at the 2004 NCAA Championships. She was All-American in the 60-meter dash (2002, 2003, 2004,) the 100-meter dash (2002, 2003, 2004), the 4x100 meter relay (2003, 2004) and the 200-meter indoors (2004). She was named the 2002 BIG EAST Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, the 2004 BIG EAST Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, and was a 11-time BIG EAST Champion. She left Miami holding seven school records. Her incredibly successful career as a sprinter continue to blossom after her time at Miami. Williams represented the United States in three Summer Olympics, capturing the silver medal in the 100-meter dash at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and winning a gold medal as a member of the U.S. team that won the 4x100-meter relay in London. After all her success on the track, the highly competitive Williams decided to try out bobsled. Her incredibly explosive burst made her an ideal

candidate to be a brakeman, but no one knew how quickly she could transition from the track to the ice. Williams proved to be a quick study, placing third at the 2013 U.S. Push Championships less than a week after she first touched a bobsled. Much like the speed that made her an Olympic champion on the track, Williams blazed past the competition and earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team that would compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But Williams’ journey from Summer Olympian to Winter Olympian did not end at the Opening Ceremonies. Paired with driver Elana Meyers, Williams set records in Sochi. She became the ninth American to compete in different sports in the Summer and Winter Olympics and her first run down the track ended with a new track record, finishing in 57.26 seconds. Williams, who picked up bobsled in July 2013, set a record with her 5.13-second start time. Williams picked up where she left off in Heat 2, besting her previous start record with a 5.12-second start time. Meyers then piloted USA-1 down the track for a heat-best time of 57.63 seconds. The duo would earn a silver medal in Sochi and Williams became the first American woman to capture medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics and one of five people to medal in different sports at the Summer and Winter Olympics. Following her success in Sochi, the 31-year-old Williams considered retirement just six months after getting in a sled for the first time. But she kept her options open, never making her plans to step away officially, and now she’s expected to lead the push athletes on the women’s World Cup team this winter. “I’m really looking forward to the season,” Williams told the AP. Information from the Associated Press was used in this piece.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2014

Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem announced the University of Miami 2015 track and field schedule. The Hurricanes’ schedule is highlighted by two home meets during the outdoor season, as well as appearances at the ACC and NCAA Championships for both indoor and outdoor track and field. “The 2015 schedule is our most competitive schedule in years,” Deem said. “Our coaching staff is excited about this year’s team and believe competing against some of the top teams in the country will give us the best opportunity to reach our goals.” Miami’s indoor season kicks off Jan.17 as the Canes travel to State College, Pa., to participate in the Nittany Lion Challenge. The Hurricanes will also compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, Virginia Tech Elite Meet and the Tyson Invitational in preparation for the ACC Championships in Blacksburg, Va., from Feb. 27-28. Two weeks later, the Canes will be in Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Miami opens its outdoor season with the first of two home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from March 20-21. They will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 10-11. The final weekend of March will have the Canes competing at the Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Fla. A week later, the Canes will compete at Florida Relays. The Canes also have trips to Gainesville, Fla., and Baton Rouge, La., as they prepare for the conference and NCAA meets. Miami will return to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete at the ACC Outdoor Championships from May 14-16. A year ago, the Hurricanes had to wait over a month between the conference meet and the NCAA East Preliminary. But the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships now slot in right before NCAAs, allowing Miami’s athletes to peak heading into the most important meets of the season. “Moving the ACC Outdoor Championships to May allows us to prepare our student-athletes for the championship portion of our season,” Deem said. Two weeks after ACCs, the Canes will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla., from May 28-30. The top Miami performers will look to advance to the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13.

2014 MEN’S TENNIS SCHEDULE

Lomacki Continues to Improve During Rookie Campaign by Daniel Sacerio Being a freshman in college is full of challenges and can cause a lot of pressure for a student. But imagine starting your freshman year ranked No. 6 in the country according to the ITA Men’s Preseason Newcomer/Freshman Rankings and doing it all in a new country. But in three short months, University of Miami freshman Piotr Lomacki a native of Warsaw, Poland, has made an immediate impact on the collegiate tennis circuit. Lomacki has already played against top competition, competing in three of the most prestigious tournaments in collegiate tennis. In his 13 collegiate matches, he has a phenomenal overall record of 8-5, with nine of his 13 matches against ITA Top 100 opponents. In those nine matches, he has gone 4-5, and in tough three-set matches, Lomacki has compiled an impressive 5-3 record. His collegiate debut was at the Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., where Lomacki beat No. 88 Quentin Monaghan from Notre Dame. Lomacki then played 2 other nationally ranked players. Although he lost to both, he did take No. 44 Tim Kopinski from the University of Illinois, to three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. In his second tournament as a Cane, at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., Lomacki beat No. 75 Alejandro Espejo from the host University of Tulsa in the second round of the qualifying round, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Lomacki then continued his winning ways and beat No. 59 Bruno Semenzato from Duke University in the third round of the qualifying round to qualify for the main draw, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5). He then fell against No. 1 Julian Lenz from Baylor, after pushing him to three sets in the first round, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. 35

HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE

In his third tournament at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Singles Championship in Athens, Ga., Lomacki would again beat ranked competition, defeating No. 50 Ben Wagland from the host University of Georgia in the Round of 16, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3. He then fell to No. 100 Maxx Limpan from Florida in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. But this is only one side of Lomacki’s game, as he is also a proud representative of his native Poland. On the international stage, Lomacki is currently ranked No. 794 in the ATP singles ranking and No. 934 in the doubles ranking. He also ranked the best junior player in Poland. Prior to UM, Lomacki found success playing for his native country, playing his way into the semifinals of the Poland F5 and Estonia F2 Tournaments, and the quarterfinals of the Poland F4 and Poland F3, all outdoor clay court events. In 2013 he won the Ozerov Cup in Russia and played into the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Great Britain Futures Tournament. The Polish native’s most recent accomplishment is being selected to the main draw, at the ITF Futures in Birmingham, Ala., set to begin on November 3. This tournament will pin Lomacki against the top young international talents. But Lomacki is far from being intimidated, as he is one of the few collegiate players to ever be selected to the main draw of this tournament.

Moik Nets Hat Trick Paced by the first career hat trick from junior Natalie Moik, the Miami Hurricanes cruised to a 3-1 win over NC State Thursday night at Dail Soccer Field. Moik scored two first-half goals to help the Hurricanes to a 2-1 advantage after 45 minutes, and tallied her third and final goal of the match just five minutes into the second period. “I am so proud of the team,” head coach MaryFrances Monroe said. “We played some of our best soccer but the difference was producing goals and being dangerous. This win has boosted the team’s confidence. They deserved it.” Miami outshot NC State 12-9 on the game, and produced six corners compared to just one for the Wolfpack. Senior goalkeeper Emily Lillard made three saves in earning the victory. The difference Thursday night was Moik, who helped Miami extend its unbeaten streak against NC State that dates back to the 2006 season.

The hat trick was the first for a Hurricane since Ashley Flinn accomplished the feat last season against Cleveland State. “Natalie had a standout game and finally showed the reason she can be a game-changer,” Monroe said. Not to be outdone was midfielder Erin McGovern, who was credited with assists on Moik’s pair of firsthalf tallies. “I believe Natalie and Erin were the engines to the team tonight,” Monroe said. “Erin was solid in the midfield today and connected for some great assists.” Miami wasted little time in opening the scoring, as Moik scored in the fourth minute to give the Hurricanes an early 1-0 lead. A cross whipped in by McGovern was headed by Moik past Wolfpack goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes. The Hurricanes doubled their advantage just five minutes into the second period, as freshman Grace Rapp helped set up Moik’s third goal.

Moik’s Hat Trick Sends Soccer Past NC State

Paced by the first career hat trick from junior Natalie Moik, the Miami Hurricanes cruised to a 3-1 win over NC State Thursday night at Dail Soccer Field. Moik scored two first-half goals to help the Hurricanes to a 2-1 advantage after 45 minutes, and tallied her third and final goal of the match just five minutes into the second period. “I am so proud of the team,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. Not to be outdone was midfielder Erin McGovern, who was credited with assists on Moik’s pair of first-half tallies. NC State tied the game on a goal by Kayla Saager, but the Hurricanes quickly regained the advantage on Moik’s second goal of the night. Sophomore Gracie Lachowecki and McGovern both assisted on Moik’s strike, sending Miami to a 2-1 advantage by the halftime whistle. The Hurricanes doubled their advantage just five minutes into the second period, as freshman Grace Rapp helped set up Moik’s third goal. Moik received the ball in the corner of the box, dribbled it and fired past Stelljes to the high far post for a 3-1 lead. Lillard and a stout performance from the Miami defense kept the Wolfpack off the board the rest of the way, clinching a key ACC road victory for the Hurricanes. “Overall, I am so proud of every player on the team,” Monroe said after the match. Miami will play its road finale Sunday at North Carolina before returning home for Senior Day on Nov. 2. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is set for 1 p.m. from Chapel Hill.

Leaf Named Senior CLASS Finalist OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Savanah Leaf was named a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball. Leaf is one of 10 finalists selected chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in September. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. “It means a lot to me because I try and not only be a good student and athlete, but also to lead in my community with my character,” Leaf said. “The fact that I am being acknowledged for all four areas is really exciting. I am really grateful for the recognition.” An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. “We are really happy for Savanah, she is so deserving,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “She is a good role model and representative of our University and our Volleyball program. Most people only see what Savanah does on the court, but in addition to being one of the most dominant players in the ACC she is also an exceptional student and is great with the kids in our summer volleyball camps.” The San Anselmo, Calif., native is a star for the Hurricanes, ranking first in the ACC and 10th in the country with 4.70 kills/set. She leads Miami with seven double-doubles on the season and recently became the eighth player in program history to tally 1,000 kills in their career. A Preseason All-ACC selection, Leaf has earned ACC Player of the Week honors twice during the 2014 season. Her 313 kills lead the Hurricanes and her 4.67 kills/set is the best in the ACC. Leaf is second on the team in service aces with 20 and ranks third in both digs (160) and blocks (52).

Leaf has tallied double-digit kills in 18 of Miami’s 20 matches to date in 2014. The gifted outside hitter has compiled 15 kills 14 times this year and recorded at least 20 kills four times, including a career-high 30 against No. 5 Florida State on Oct. 5. Her performance against the rival Seminoles set a Miami record for kills in an ACC match. The senior also set the record for most kills by a Hurricane at the Knight Sports Complex and tied Karla Johnson for most kills by a Cane in a single match (9/3/05 at Houston). While she has been a dominant force on the court, her accomplishments outside of volleyball are equally as impressive. A senior with a double major in Psychology and Human and Social Development, Leaf has accumulated a 3.877 GPA. She earned distinction on the President’s Honor Roll in Spring 2013 for her perfect 4.0 semester GPA, as well as the Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75 GPA), Dean’s List Honor Roll (3.5 GPA), Athletic Director Honor Roll (3.2 GPA) and UM’s Book Buster Club (3.0 GPA) in Spring 2012, Spring 2013, Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. Leaf is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Furthermore, she was named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team and is a two-time ACC Honor Roll student-athlete. She is also heavily involved in the Miami community and in her home state of California. The senior has worked as a volleyball coach at the Jose Gandara Volleyball Camps in Coral Gables the past two summers and she has been a summer volleyball coach for the San Francisco Juniors VB Club. Leaf also got the Canes involved in a service project that helped revitalize inner city parks in the Miami area. The Canes are back in action Friday, when they travel to North Carolina for matches against UNC and NC State. Miami will face the Tar Heels on Friday at 6 p.m., while Sunday’s match against NC State is scheduled for 1 p.m.

CANES CONTINUE TO ROLL CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami of Football has had its fair share of ups and downs during the 2014 season, but lately the ups have been far more prevalent than the downs. In the Canes’ last four games, Miami has outscored its opponents 124-78 and have posted a 3-1 record during that stretch, earning victories over ACC Coastal Divison-leading Duke, Cincinnati and a convincing 30-6 triumph over Virginia Tech on ESPN’s Thursday night football. Leading the way for the Hurricanes’ offensive unit is junior running back Duke Johnson. In each of the last four games, Johnson has surpassed 100 yards on the ground. His last rushing effort of 249 yards was a single-game career high. He now has 11 career 100yard games. Johnson’s next 100-yard game will move him into fourth all-time and move him pass with former Cane great James Jackson. Following his career-high performance, Johnson became just the eighth player in school history to surpass 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. The Hurricanes’ defense has been equally impressive over the last four games, holding opponents to just 19.5 points per game. Following its performance against Virginia Tech, Miami ranks 15 nationally in total defense, allowing just 319.3 yards per game through eight contests. The Hurricanes also rank No. 9 nationally in passing yards allowed.

TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL

• Miami is plus-5 in turnovers in its last two games. Only five teams in the nation have a better differential in their two most recent games (as of Oct. 26). The list: Ball State +9 Georgia +9 Ole Miss +7 Houston +6 Missouri +6 MIAMI +5

CONTROLLING THE GROUND GAME

• Miami has allowed 93.5 yards rushing per game in its last two outings, which ranks 14th-best in the country over that span. • The Hurricanes have not allowed a rushing touchdown since the Georgia Tech game. Only three other teams nationally did not give up a rushing score over that span. (Two of those clubs, Florida State and Louisville, play Oct. 30.) • Duke Johnson has outrushed Miami’s opponents by more than a 2-to-1 margin over the last two Hurricane games, 411-187.

WALFORD NAMED TO MACKEY MIDSEASON WATCH LIST

• Senior tight end Clive Walford was named to the 2014 Mackey Award Midseason Watch List last week by the Mackey Award Selection Committee. • Walford received the midseason honor after opening the year on a high note, hauling in a team-best 23 receptions. • He is looking to become the second Hurricane tight end to receive the award since Kellen Winslow II did so in 2003.

CANES POST TOP 10 FINISH Wilmette, Ill. – The Hurricanes completed play at the Windy City Collegiate Classic this morning for the third and final round. Miami’s first round Monday left the team tied for first, but the course at Westmoreland Country Club was hard to tame in rounds two and three. Head coach Patti Rizzo believes the cool temperatures at Westmoreland may have played a role in the team’s performances in the last two rounds. Yet, Rizzo thinks the team needs to respond positively to challenges.

“Maybe we are only good players in warm weather. Every time it’s cold they play poorly,” Rizzo explained. “They need to learn to handle adversity better. Daniela Darquea entered play Tuesday in contention for first in the player leaderboard, finishing her first two rounds in second place. Her first round score of 69 was just three strokes shy of the course record, which was set later in the day by Tulane’s Emily Penttila. Perryman Named Butkus Award Semifinalist

For the second consecutive season, Denzel Perryman was named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, annually honoring the nation’s top football linebacker. Perryman was one of 15 semifinalists named by the Butkus Award Foundation Monday, and one of just two from the ACC. Among the 15 recognized Monday, Perryman is the only two-time semifinalist. He was named to the preseason watch list for the award in July. A Coral Gables HS graduate, Perryman has started all eight games this season for the Hurricanes and has started 21 consecutive games dating back to the start of the 2013 season. Miami’s leading tackler with 62 stops on the season, Perryman ranks first in both solo tackles (42) and assisted tackles (20). The 2014 Preseason All-ACC selection has added four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and two forced fumbles through eight games. He stands as Miami’s active tackles leader with 303 career stops, and is just 25 tackles shy of cracking the top 10 mark in program history in the category. Perryman is looking to become just the fifth Hurricane to ever be named a Butkus Award finalist and second to win the award outright; Dan Morgan was selected the winner in 2000. Finalists for both the collegiate and high school levels will be named November 24 and winners by December 9, by the independent panel of 51 recruiters, scouts, coaches and journalists. Perryman joins Stephone Anthony (Clemson) as semifinalists from the ACC. Also recognized were Myles Jack (UCLA), Jordan Jenkins (Georgia), A.J. Lamar Miller (Miami Dolphins) – 78 rushing yards, 21 receiving yards Sunday marked another impressive performance for Dolphins third-year running back Lamar Miller, who seems to improve with every opportunity he gets. Bolstered by a dominant showing from the defense, Miami came away with a 27-13 victory over Jacksonville in which Miller led the way offensively with 78 rushing yards on 14 carries and 21 receiving yards on three receptions. Miller is averaging 4.9 yards per carry – tied with his rookie season for the best mark of his career. The Killian HS alum is on pace for the first 1,000-yard season of his career with 469 yards through the first 95 games. Jimmy Graham (New Orleans Saints) Five catches, 59 yards, one touchdown Things were looking bleak after zero touchdowns through the first two rounds of games Sunday afternoon, but Jimmy Graham extended the #ProCanes scoring streak to 14 consecutive weeks with his 22-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees in the third quarter Sunday. Graham, who missed last week’s game with an injury, returned Sunday night against Green Bay and immediately made an impact. The touchdown catch was the 45th of Graham’s five-year career, and fourth of this season. His five catches and 49 yards ranked second among all New Orleans’ pass catchers.
