Hurricane Student-Athletes Earn Best-Ever Semester GPA Women’s cross country, women’s track & field, volleyball and football set records
University of Miami student-athletes set new academic standards during the spring semester, producing the best semester and cumulative GPA the Hurricanes have ever recorded. Fourteen of Miami’s 18 teams earned at least a 3.00 or better semester GPA and 22 student-athletes had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the spring. Overall, 172 studentathletes earned at least a 3.0 semester GPA and 135 student-athletes earned Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recognition. “Our Hurricane student-athletes are to be applauded,” said David Wyman, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services. “They are consistently producing excellent results in the classroom as they set GPA, APR and graduation rate records for our institution. I am tremendously proud of them and our coaches for achieving these awesome results.” Women’s cross country posted the best mark of all of the teams, a 3.63 GPA, the second-highest team GPA ever recorded at UM. The men’s cross country team also raised the bar by recording the best-ever male team GPA at 3.53. Four squads earned team-best GPAs, including football and volleyball with their best GPA ever, men’s outdoor track with a team-best spring GPA and women’s track with its top semester GPA in school history. Baseball, men’s basketball and soccer each posted second-best spring GPAs while baseball and hoops also had their best academic years. Overall, UM women had a semester GPA of 3.21 and cumulative GPA of 3.19 and Hurricane men earned a semester GPA of 2.75 and a cumulative GPA of 2.69. The seven teams with a 3.0 semester GPA or better are women’s swimming and diving (3.36), women’s tennis (3.26), men’s indoor track and field (3.22), golf (3.14), men’s diving (3.13), rowing (3.09) and men’s tennis (3.04).

They are stories of perseverance. Stories about growing up, becoming men and being a part of a family. One-by-one, we hear from them. These are the Miami Hurricanes...

The U is a brand that is known all around the world. Playing football has given me a lot of life skills. It’s taught me about being responsible, being accountable, being on time, and it’s taught me how to be a man. When I played football as a kid, I pretended to be Barry Sanders. I played running back, quarterback and linebacker growing up. Whatever you name, I’ve played it. When I got to high school, I started to focus on defense. The school I went to, you only had to play one way because you had so much talent. Miami Northwestern is the best high school ever (laughs). The football program, the people that are involved in it, the fan base we have, it’s all special. I secretly wish that people would stop thinking I’m quiet. A lot of people think that. In every interview, people tell me I come off quiet. I’m afraid of failing. Linebacker U is about all the greats. Michael Barrow, Jessie Armstead, Jon Beason, Jonathan Vilma, DJ Williams, Rohan Marley, Colin McCarthy, Dan Morgan, Nate Webster. The list goes on and on. Working with the NFL players that come back is a great feeling. Seeing guys that you grew up watching, doing the same workouts you’re doing, and being successful doing it, you know you’re doing something right. The University of Miami was close to home. It had a great football program. I knew I would come here and get a great education. I admire Jonathan Vilma. He knows I look up to him. Giving back is something I want to do when the opportunity presents itself. It’s something me and my mom always talk about, giving back to kids who don’t have anything. My hidden talent is probably playing quarterback. I’m like Michael Vick, except right-handed. Playing linebacker was something I knew I had a chance of being great at. Coming up, my tenacity to get to the ball, I knew I had it. In high school, there was a guy at running back already named Antwain Easterling, a lot of people will remember the name. I knew I wanted to play right away, and it wouldn’t be on that side of the ball, so I stayed on defense. My mom is my heart. I’m a mama’s boy. She’ll do anything for me, and I would do anything for her. The Golden Era is going to be a good era. Coach Golden is going to do great things with this program and with this team. The way he runs things, he’s a great coach. He has a great personality, and he knows how to get to certain players. I think we’re going to be well prepared for games, and for life. My favorite song right now is “The Real is Back” by Young Jeezy. The best advice I ever received was to come back for my fourth year and get my degree. It was a tough decision. When I first read Coach Golden’s biography, and read the defenses he ran were usually a 3-4 base, I thought it wouldn’t fit me. I thought about taking my chances and going to the NFL. My parents kept saying I should talk to him and see what he was planning on running, and I could make my decision then. When he told me he’d be doing the 4-3 defense, that kind of sealed the deal, and I started leaning more toward coming back. When I look at myself in the mirror, I see a handsome young man (laughs). I see what God created. I see a guy who is not going to stop until he gets where he wants to be in life. I wish my oldest brother would have gotten a break, and would have gotten a chance to play college football. Things didn’t go his way. He was supposed to get into a few schools and it didn’t work. He went to junior college instead, and it still didn’t work. He’s living through me, and I know I have to make it happen because he’s going to be there on my back if I don’t. I was raised in Opa-locka. I was raised with my mother and my father, with two brothers and two sisters. I was raised the right way.
Behind the Facemask
Becoming a man is being able to take care of responsibility, doing things that need to get done, and not making excuses. It’s about getting the job done. If I weren’t playing football, I would still be in college trying to get a degree. Just based on the parents I have, they weren’t going to let me sit in the house. When I was six years old, instead of playing peewee level, I played with the 85-pound level. I was only 50 pounds. The park I was at, they didn’t have 65’s at the time, so I had to play with the big boys. Everybody was bigger than me, but I was a starter and I played nose guard. I was quick; they couldn’t block me (laughs). There’s no better feeling than hitting the quarterback. Knowing the quarterback doesn’t get hit in practice, when you get the chance in the game, there’s nothing like it. You try to get one of those “remember me” hits. Running through the smoke is a great feeling. Watching it on television when I was younger, and now doing it myself, there’s nothing like it. It lets you know that it’s game time. You’re running through the smoke of storied tradition. Knowing that you’re going down the same path as guys who have great careers in the NFL, it’s awesome.
The new staff has been great. Sometimes you need a change. I knew Coach McDonald, because he tried to get me to come to Minnesota when he was there. I think the staff that Coach Golden brought in is a great staff. We’re going to be well prepared and well coached. I don’t think you’re going to see a lot of penalties, a lot of missed tackles, turnovers, missed opportunities, things like that. I know for sure we’re going to be in the best shape of our lives, and we’re going to be more unified than ever. When you’re the quarterback of the defense, you need to know where everyone has to be. If they’re wrong, you have to line them up. If you see something, you can check out of it. You have to be a step ahead of all the other guys. Being a leader, it falls right into place. Guys are looking up to you to lead. It goes hand-in-hand, being the quarterback of the defense and being a leader. Check out more player profiles on Miami’s athletics website at Behind the Facemask Central.

Miami Selected as 2011-12 ACC Preseason Favorite
Canes picked to finish first in ACC for the first time since joining the league in 2004 The Miami women’s basketball team has been predicted to finish atop of the 2011-12 ACC Women’s Basketball standings for the first time since the Hurricanes joined the league in 2004. The predictions were made by a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel, consisting of national and local media, as well as school representatives. The Hurricanes, who earned 30 of a possible 40 first-place votes, are coming off the ultimate turnaround season. The squad finished 12th in 2009-10 and then tied with Duke for the ACC regular season crown one year later. The 12 ACC wins last season were the most for the UM program in the league, while Miami also won 20 games for the 10th time in program history. This year the Canes return their complete starting five, including two of last year’s All-ACC first-teamers in seniors Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams. Following Miami to round out the top five of the preseason selections are Duke (with 10 first-place votes), Maryland, Florida State, and Georgia Tech. North Carolina was picked to finish sixth, followed by NC State, Virginia, Boston College, Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech. The Preseason All-ACC Team is highlighted by the Miami senior guard tandem of Johnson and Williams. The two led the Canes to a 20-0 home record last season at the BankUnited Center. Johnson returns as the 2011-12 ACC Preseason Player of the Year. The senior was named the 2010-11 ACC Player of the Year, the first Hurricane player to win the award, and voted to last year’s All-ACC First Team and All-ACC Defensive team. Johnson also earned spots on the Associated Press Third Team All-America, Full Court Press Second Team All-America, USBWA All-America and WBCA/State Farm All-America teams, as well as named a finalist for the John Wooden Award, given to the top player in women’s college basketball. Joining Johnson and Williams on the Preseason All-ACC team are Florida State senior forward Cierra Bravard, Maryland senior center Lynetta Kizer and Terrapin teammate Alyssa Thomas (sophomore forward). The ACC Newcomer Watch list, which replaced the Preseason Rookie of the Year honor in 2010, highlights freshmen, true and redshirt, and transfers that are expected to make an immediate impact in the league. This year’s Watch List includes Duke freshmen Elizabeth Williams (center) and Amber Henson (forward), Georgia Tech freshman guard Sydney Wallace, North Carolina freshman guard Brittany Roundtree and Clemson freshman guard/forward Natiece Ford. Duke’s incoming class for this year marks the second-straight No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the Blue Devils.
