Hard Work for the Home Team: Jon Feliciano

The Miami Hurricanes have a long tradition of homegrown talent showcasing itself on the football field. Canes legends like Michael Irvin, Sean Taylor, Jonathan Vilma, Santana Moss and Bennie Blades are just a handful of South Florida natives who shined while donning Miami’s orange and green. Over the course of the 2013 football season, HurricaneSports.com will honor a Hurricane football player with South Florida ties as the Milam’s Market Homegrown Athlete of the Week. This week’s player spotlight is Davie, Fla., native Jon Feliciano. Skill position players typically get most of the spotlight, but linemen play a key role in making any team’s offense go. Whether it is punishing defenders while opening holes for running backs or protecting their signal caller as he zips passes downfield, offensive linemen like Miami’s Jon Feliciano are vital to a football team’s success. Feliciano fits the mold of the unheralded worker who just gets the job done. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman is versatile, playing both guard and tackle while at Miami. Feliciano is also tough, playing in 30 of a possible 32 career games. The Davie, Fla., native missed two games in his redshirt freshman season due to injury but returned to start two of the final three games of the 2011 campaign. An All-Broward selection as a senior at Davie’s Western High School, Felicano was a three-star recruit that received attention from several quality programs. Despite getting offers from in-state rival Florida State and SEC programs South Carolina, Tennessee and Ole Miss, Feliciano chose to stay close to home and play for the Hurricanes. His decision to join the Canes has been beneficial for Feliciano and the Miami football program. After redshirting in 2010, Feliciano emerged as a key cog in Miami’s offensive line in 2011. He played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman, making eight starts and not allowing a sack while grading out at 84 percent for the year. In 2012, Feliciano was a fixture on Miami’s offensive line that helped the Hurricanes rank third in the ACC in passing offense (295.4 yards/game) and fifth in total offense (440.2 ypg). The redshirt sophomore started all 12 games at left guard, earning All-ACC honorable mention accolades. Feliciano continues to be an important blocker for the Canes in 2013, helping Miami to a 7-1 record so far this season. With the Canes set to host ACC Coastal division rival Virginia Tech this weekend, look for Feliciano to continue working hard in the trenches.

Andre Johnson (Houston Texans) – nine catches, 229 yards, three touchdowns Despite his team’s disappointing defeat, Andre Johnson put up “video game” numbers in Houston’s Sunday Night Football matchup with visiting Indianapolis. Johnson recorded the third 200yard receiving game of his career, 137 of which came in the game’s first quarter, while registering three touchdowns before halftime for the Texans. His 190 yards at the halftime whistle set a new personal best, while he moved into fourth place in receiving yards (813) by night’s end. Perhaps most notably, Johnson moved past fellow #ProCanes legend Michael Irvin into 20th place in all-time NFL receiving yards (12,067) – one of just three active receivers in the prestigious list.

UM Sports Hall of Fame Unveils 2014 Class

Current Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and Hurricanes football greats Clinton Portis and Lamar Thomas headline the UM Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014. All eight members will be formally introduced at halftime of Miami’s home finale Nov. 23 vs. Virginia. The Class of 2014 includes Johnson (football, 2000-02), James Jones (basketball, 1999-2003), Jeff Morrison (baseball, 1978-81), Wyllesheia Myrick (track, 1998-2002), Portis (football, 1999-2001), Rio Ramirez (diving, 1997-99), Javy Rodriguez (baseball, 1999-2002) and Thomas (football, 1988-92). The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1966 by eight Dade County Circuit Court judges, who wanted to establish an organization that would recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who excelled at their sport and brought acclaim to the University of Miami through achievements and championships. In 2002, Johnson caught 52 passes for 1,092 yards – an astonishing 21 yards-per catch average – and nine touchdowns, joining UMSHoF member Eddie Brown (1,114 yards in 1984) as one of only two Miami receivers to gain over 1,000 yards in a season. His 193 yards (on six catches) against Virginia Tech in 2002 is the fourth-most receiving yards in a game by a Hurricane. He ended his career with 92 catches for 1,831 yards, the fifth-highest total and his 20 touchdowns are tied for third-most. Johnson caught seven passes for a career-high 199 yards and two scores to lead Miami to its fifth national title. For his efforts, he was named the 2002 Rose Bowl Game Most Valuable Player. A 2002 All-BIG EAST first team member, Johnson also ran track, winning BIG EAST titles in 2002 in the indoor 60-meter and 100-meter dashes. One of the finest all-around players in UM history, Jones is still listed in the record books as fourth in career blocked shots (192), seventh in career 3-point field goal percentage (.383), eighth in free throw percentage (.831), tenth in steals (137), 11th in field goals made (124) and 14th in total points (1,356). He twice led Miami in rebounding and blocked shots, and once in steals. A four-time All-BIG EAST Academic team member, he was selected a 2003 Verizon Academic All-American. Another in the long line of great Hurricane lefthanders, Morrison teamed with UMSHoF member Neal Heaton to form one of the finest 1-2 pitching punches in college baseball history, leading the Canes to the College World Series all four years (1978-1981). He is still fourth in career earned run average (2.37), fifth in career victories with 38 (38-6 overall), sixth in career innings pitched (387) and seventh in career appearances. In 1981, he had a 12-1 record with a 2.93 ERA with five complete games and two shutouts. A three-time COSIDA Academic All-American (‘79, ‘80, ‘81), Jeff was awarded the NCAA’s Post Graduate Scholarship Award in 1981. The 2000 BIG EAST Outstanding Track Performer, Myrick was a two-time All-American and a five-time conference champion. She won her BIG EAST titles in the indoor 200-meter, the outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter in 2000, the outdoor 200-meter in 2002 and was a member of the 4x100 championship relay team in 1998. She left Miami with school records in the indoor 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash and 200-meters, and the outdoor 200-meters. She helped UMSHoF member Coach Amy Deem’s teams to four BIG EAST Outdoor Championship team titles. Portis ranks fourth among Miami’s all-time leading rushers with 2,523 yards on 440 carries (seventh-most). He is tied with Edgerrin James for the school lead with 14 100-yard rushing games. His eight 100-yard rushing games in 2001 are the second-most all-time, and he gained at least 100 yards against all five of Miami’s ranked opponents that year, including 122 yards against FSU and 104 in the National Championship Game against Nebraska. His 21 career touchdowns rank eighth in school history. The 1998 NCAA Diver of the Year, Ramirez defected from Cuba in 1993 at a meet in Puerto Rico with $13 in his pocket and soon became one of Miami’s most decorated divers. He was a three-time All-American and a four-time NCAA Champion, winning titles in the 1-meter springboard (1997, 1998 and 1999) and the 10-meter Platform (1999). Rio was named the 1998 NCAA Diver of the Year when he won the 1-meter springboard, finished second in the 3-meter springboard and eighth in the 10-meter platform at the national championship meet. One of the stars on both of UMSHoF member Coach Jim Morris’ National Championship teams (1999 and 2001) Rodriguez is second all-time in steals with 135. He led the Canes three years in stolen bases and led the NCAA in steals in 2001 with 66, the school single-season record. He twice led the Canes in batting average (.382 in 2001 and .376 in 2002) and is second all-time in hits (321). He is third in at-bats, fourth in total bases and fifth in runs scored. A career .369 hitter, his total is the all-time highest career average among UM’s middle infielders. A two-time (1991 and 1992) All-BIG EAST wide receiver, Thomas left Miami as the school’s all-time leader in receptions with 144 (now second behind Reggie Wayne), second in touchdown receptions with 22 and receiving yards with 2,271 (now fourth). He led the Canes in receiving touchdowns in 1991 and 1992 and his 10 touchdowns in 1992 are the third-highest in school history. He established a UM record with three touchdown receptions against Texas Tech – since tied twice. Lamar had a penchant for big catches in big games, most notably his seven receptions for 107 yards and the winning touchdown against Florida State in 1992. 19

McCormack Tapped into Omicron Delta Kappa

Junior diver Kara McCormack was tapped into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society on Tuesday for her continued excellence in the classroom. In order to be eligible for the award, nominees must be in the top 35 percent of their class or school within the University. Some of the ideals of the ODK Honor Society include exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship, and consecration to the democratic ideal. “We are very proud of the student-athletes tapped into ODK,” Christopher Doell, director of athletics academic services said. “It’s a tremendous honor, and it highlights their demonstrated commitment to excellence in all areas of their lives.” McCormack, one of the top collegiate divers in the nation, has been equally impressive outside the pool. A mathematics major, McCormack was named the 2012-13 University of Miami Female Underclassman Scholar of the Year and selected to her second straight All-ACC Academic Team. She boasts an eye-popping cumulative GPA of 3.98 GPA, has qualified for the Provost’s Honor Roll (GPA of 3.75 or higher) all four semesters as an undergraduate student, earned a spot on the President’s Honor Roll two times (perfect GPA of 4.0) and is a University of Miami Book Buster member. McCormack, who was named the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Diver of the Year, took gold in her signature platform event at the 2013 ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C., and also captured bronze in the 1-meter event. The Austin, Texas native earned her first career All-America recognition at the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis with a sixth-place finish in the platform, qualifying for the event with a top finish at Zone B regional qualifying.

Lauryn Williams Named to US Bobsled Team

By TIM REYNOLDS , AP Sports Writer Lolo Jones is a step closer to the Sochi Games, and Lauryn Williams might not have raced in her final Olympics after all. Jones and Williams are best known for their track accomplishments, Jones as one of the world’s elite hurdlers and Williams as an NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist sprinter. They were among nine women chosen Saturday for the U.S. bobsled national team, putting them squarely into the mix for spots in Sochi in February. U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation CEO Darrin Steele called the team “the fastest and most prepared group of athletes we’ve ever seen.” “It was difficult to narrow the women’s push field to six and it will be even more challenging to select the top three for the Olympic team in a few months,” Steele said in a statement shortly after Saturday’s announcement was made in Park City, Utah. “The hard work and dedication has paid off and I couldn’t be more proud of all these athletes.” Elana Meyers will drive USA-1, Jamie Greubel will drive USA-2 and Jazmine Fenlator will drive USA-3. Meyers was a bronze medalist as a push athlete at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Also selected as push athletes were 2010 Olympian Emily Azevedo, two-time national push champion Aja Evans, two-time world championship medalist Katie Eberling and Army soldier-athlete Kristi Koplin. Jones is on the women’s national team for the second straight season after establishing herself quickly a year ago on the World Cup circuit. Williams is a rookie who was recruited by Jones, and the former Miami Hurricanes star signed on following her retirement from track not long after helping the U.S. win the 400-meter relay gold medal at the London Olympics.Jones finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at the London Games and four years earlier in Beijing was in position to win gold when she hit the ninth of 10 hurdles and wound up seventh. “Last year, I was just soaking everything in. It was an adventure, it was fun, it was nothing really on the line for me,” Jones said. “It was just kind of an escape and there were no expectations. So now coming into my second year, they expect me to be more knowledgeable and more of a leader.” Williams touched a bobsled for the first time in July. A week later, she placed third in the national push championships. What wasn’t even fathomable — a sprinter who has spent much of the last 15 years in Miami getting into a winter sport and qualifying for the Olympics almost on a whim — now seems more than a little bit possible. “I know this is the right place for me right now,” Williams said. “I’ve learned so much in the two months already. And do I want to make it all the way to the end? Certainly.” Jones said she recognized right away that Williams, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter dash, had all the right tools for sliding. “She’s very humble,” Jones said. “I was like, ‘Oh, gosh, I’m going to regret recruiting her if she beats me out for the team.’ But I have a lot of respect for Lauryn and I just couldn’t see her taking a stab at it. She already has the gold and the silver. I told her she’s losing nothing and just go for it.” It’s expected that the push athletes will alternate between drivers somewhat during the World Cup season, which starts next month. The Olympic team will likely be finalized just a few weeks before the Sochi Games open. “Jazmine, Elana and I all started driving around the same time so we have that kind of friendly rivalry and I think it works really well for us,” Greubel said. “We work together and shake each other’s hands at the end of the day, no matter who’s on top. I really respect the other girls that are drivers on the team. They definitely help push me to be a better athlete.” The men’s national team will be announced Sunday, with Steven Holcomb, Nick Cunningham and Cory Butner the expected drivers on the squad. The four-man team trials ended in Park City on Saturday night, with Holcomb — the 2010 Olympic gold medalist who has a bye onto the national team — sweeping the competition, driving his “Night Train” sled to a two-run time of 1 minute, 35.88 seconds. Curt Tomasevicz, Steve Langton and Chris Fogt were in Holcomb’s sled, and that’s the likely lineup for USA-1 to open the World Cup circuit next month. Cunningham drove his sled to second place on the 2002 Olympic track, 0.45 seconds behind Holcomb. Butner’s sled was another 0.39 seconds back. 25

SCHEDULE AND RESULTS RESULTS

Johnson Makes @CanesVB History Alex Johnson became 2nd player in UM history to record 1,000 kills & 1,000 digs Making history has almost become second nature for Miami’s Alex Johnson. The senior has started every match of her collegiate career, appearing on the court in 116 matches heading into this weekend’s road trip to Virginia. A preseason All-ACC selection, Johnson has accomplished a lot in her Hurricanes’ career. The Tallahassee, Fla., native was named All-ACC after a stellar junior season a year ago. She also garnered AVCA All-region honors and was one of three Hurricanes to earn honorable mention 2012 AVCA AllAmerica status. Johnson, who started her 100th career match earlier this season, reached another milestone recently. The veteran right side hitter notched the 1,000th kill of her collegiate career. The milestone attack came in the deciding fifth set in Miami’s victory over No. 12 North Carolina on Nov. 3. Johnson, who finished with 12 kills and 12 digs to record her eighth double-double of the year, picked up her 1,000th career kill with a big hit that helped Miami upset the talented Tar Heels. “I just tried to focus on going out and doing my job,” Johnson said. I don’t focus on stats at all. My team played great and really helped me out. In my four years here, they’ve

always helped me succeed. I have a lot to attribute t them.” Johnson joins two-time AVCA All-American Lane Carico as the only two players in Miami history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in their career. “It’s obviously a great honor,” Johnson said. “I looked up to Lane playing here. She is a phenomenal player. My team really helped me achieve this goal and I am thankful for that.” For Johnson, the biggest thing about her strong performance against UNC is what it means for her team. “It’s a big win for us,” She said. “We had our losing streak for a little bit so to come back and get a 2-0 weekend and turn things around against a ranked team is huge for us. We’re just trying to show that we’re still in it and be competitive.” The senior captain has meant a lot to the Hurricanes and head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara is looking forward to seeing Johnson finish her stellar Hurricane career as strong as she started it a few years ago. “She is a steady player for us,” Gandara said. “We need her to do a lot of things. She digs, attacks, passes, serves and blocks. She faces tough matchups all the time and still succeeds. It’s awesome. She’s had a long career here and played a lot of matches. We hope she has a couple more in her.”

@HurricanesGolf Concludes Fall No. 33 in Golfstat Rankings CORAL GABLES, Fla. - After back-to-back top-3 finishes to close its fall schedule, the Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team is No. 33 in the latest Golfstat rankings. Miami, which opened the season with a seventh-place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational in Septemeber, rattled off second- and third-place finishes in consecutive trips to Texas. The Canes finished second at the Challenge at Onion Creek, shooting 31-over 871. Two weeks later, the Hurricanes finished third at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, where it shattered the program record for 18-, 36- and 54-hole scores.

In three tournaments, Miami’s lineup was dominated by two returners - Leticia Ras-Anderica and Rika Park - and three newcomers. Ras-Anderica leads the Canes with a 73.89 scoring average through nine rounds and a pair of top-25 finishes. Newcomers Delfina Acosta and Daniela Darquea are tied for second on the team with a 74.00 scoring average. Miami opens its spring season with four consecutive tournaments in Florida, beginning Jan. 27 at the Florida Challenge in Lecanto. The Hurricanes will host the Hurricane Invitational in March.

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT Student-Athletes and Agents There have been numerous national media reports regarding agents having impermissible encounters with collegiate student-athletes. The actions of an agent are governed by the professional players’ associations (NFLPA, MLBPA, etc.) so NCAA rules primarily outline what a student-athlete may do in relation to an agent. Below are some frequently asked questions about this topic so you may gain a basic understanding regarding the NCAA’s rules in this area. Q: Would prospective or enrolled student-athletes jeopardize their amateur status and become ineligible for intercollegiate athletics if they retain an agent? A: YES. The basic rule is that student-athletes are ineligible for participation in an intercollegiate sport if they have ever agreed (orally or in writing) to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing their athletics ability or reputation in that sport. Q: How would the NCAA find out if a student-athlete did sign with an agent? A: Information comes to the NCAA from a variety of sources. For example, it may come from the student-athlete or the institution, the studentathlete’s ex-girlfriend or boyfriend, a disgruntled teammate, or a competing agent or runner. If the NCAA receives credible information that suggests that a violation may have occurred, it will follow up. Q: What benefits can agents provide to enrolled or prospective student-athletes without jeopardizing their amateur status? A: NONE. Any benefits (i.e., cash or other gifts or services) agents or their firm or agency provide to student-athletes would constitute compensation for their athletics talent and abilities, regardless of the value of the benefit or whether the benefit is used. Q: Can an agent send a gift to a student-athlete’s mother or girlfriend? A: NO. A student-athlete’s friends or relatives can-not receive any benefit that would be an impermissible benefit if received by the student-athlete, with-out jeopardizing the student-athlete’s amateur status. Below are additional guidelines for athletics department staff members: • No athletics department staff member of a member institution may serve as an agent, or represent, directly or indirectly, any individual in the marketing of athletics ability or reputation to a professional sports team or a professional sports organization, unless that staff member is acting in his or her capacity as a member of the institution’s professional sports counseling panel. • An athletics department staff member may not receive benefits for facilitating or arranging a meeting between a student-athlete and an agent, financial advisor or a representative of an agent or advisor. Maintaining compliance is essential to the success of our athletic programs and we ask for your help in making sure the University of Miami is operating within the rules. “Ask Before You Act” by contacting the University of Miami Compliance Office directly. Flinn Recognized with All-ACC Honors

Miami Hurricanes junior striker Ashley Flinn was among those recognized with all-conference honors Thursday, earning a spot on the All-ACC Third Team. The Romeo, Mich., native had a breakout campaign for the Hurricanes, leading the team and ranking seventh in the ACC with 10 goals in the regular season. Flinn recorded four multi-goal performances on the year, including the first hat trick for a Hurricane since 2009 with a three-goal game against Cleveland State. “Coming into the season before we started we asked the team what their goals were,” first-year head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “The team said they didn’t score a lot of goals last year. My job is to help them score. Ashley and a few other players really took it to heart, and listened to the details in regards to improving.” Flinn’s goals often came at the most opportune moments, including a second-half brace that guided Miami to a 2-0 upset of then-No. 3 Notre Dame. She ranked second on the team in shots on goal (21), and netted a team-high five game-winners on the year. Timely strikes included a golden goal in overtime against Jacksonville and a decisive strike with 40 seconds remaining in regulation against FAU. “Ashley is determined. She wants to help the team succeed,” Monroe said. “It started to click, and she came up with big-time goals, especially in the beginning of the year. I think she improved as the year went on, and was really able to find success.” Flinn is the first All-ACC honoree since Kate Howarth took home second-team honors in 2011.

URowing Shines at Head of the Hooch Canes won two races and earned four Top 10 finishes in Tennessee The University of Miami rowing program made the most of its lone fall regatta, turning in a strong showing at the Head of the Hooch. The Canes were highly competitive on the Tennessee River, winning two races and earning four Top 10 finishes in what was a successfull weekend in Chattanooga. “All the crews raced hard and with lots of poise,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said.. “It was great to see all their hard work in practice pay off in the races.” Miami’s first boat in the water took the top spot in its race, winning the Championship 8+ with a time of 16:07.7. The Hurricanes placed ahead Oklahoma (16:17.6) and Texas (16:22.8). ACC foes North Carolina (7th, 16:38.7 and 21st, 17:38.4), as well as rowing clubs from Georgia Tech (22md, 17:42.4) and Florida State (28th, 18:59.0), also competed in the 31-boat field. The Canes also had a strong showing in the Championship 4+ division as their A crew placed second with a time of 17:44.1, just seconds behind first place Tennessee (17:37.8). The Championship 4+ B crew also shined, placing eighth with a time of 18:16.6, giving Miami two boats finishing in the Top 10 of a 33-boat field. The Hurricanes also competed in the Women’s College & Club Novice 4+, turning in a time of 23:21.1. Sanderson was pleased with how the novices performed in their first collegiate race.

“They did an outstanding job for their first race ever as Hurricanes,” Sanderson said. After a solid start on Day 1 at Head of the Hooch, the Hurricanes finished strong, earning a victory on the final day of the regatta. Miami had two boats compete in the Women’s Open 8+ race and both put together strong showings. The “A” crew placed first with a time of 15:25.7, while the “B” crew turned in a time of 16:52.5 to finish 21st out of 38 boats. “Both boats were able to grind away and take some quality strokes,” Sanderson said. “It was great to cap off the weekend with another win.” The Hurricanes finished the weekend with four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish. Miami finished third among ACC teams at Head of the Hooch with 152 points. “With such a short fall racing season, I’m really happy the athletes were able to take full advantage of their one opportunity to race until March,” Sanderson said. “Once again, I couldn’t be more proud of them.” After wrapping their only regatta of the fall season, Miami will focus on training for the spring season set to begin with a scrimmage against Michigan on March 8.

NOVEMBER 8, 2013

Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson is in his first year at the helm of Canes rowing, but it is not his first stint in Coral Gables. Sanderson spent a year as an assistant coach at Miami under Debra Morgan in 2006. Assistant Taurii Coyne also is a familiar face to URowing. Coyne is a 2007 graduate of the University of Miami and was a volunteer coach for the Canes in 2006-07 and 2009.

SAN DIEGO SUCCESS The Hurricanes will travel to California to compete in the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic in early April. Miami’s 1V8+ won the Cal Cup at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. After their victory in the Cal Cup race a year ago, Miami will compete for the Jessop-Whittier Cup in 2014. Miami’s 2V8+ will look to bring home the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy.

READING, WRITING & ROWING The Hurricanes excel on the water and in the classroom. A year ago, Miami had five studentathletes earn All-ACC Academic honors and four rowers were selected as CRCA National ScholarAthletes. The Canes bring back 22 rowers from a program that placed fourth at the ACC Championships a year ago, including CRCA National ScholarAthletes Breanna Hayton and Hannah Meister. Hayton, who was also a 2013 All-ACC Academic selection, helped the Canes take first place in the Championship 8+ race at Head of the Hooch, while Meister was a member of the winning crew in the Women’s Open 8+ in Chattanooga.

Savanah Leaf Joins ODK Honor Society

Miami volleyball’s Savanah Leaf was one of four student-athletes recently tapped into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. Leaf joined diver Kara McCormack, distance runner Taylor Votek and women’s tennis player Monique Albuquerque as the newest members in one of the oldest and most prestigious honor societies at the University of Miami. All students inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa must rank among the top 35 percent in their class and have completed at least 60 credit hours. All Omicron Delta Kappa members possess the following five ideals: exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship and consecration to the democratic ideal. “We are very proud of the student-athletes tapped into ODK,” said Chris Doell, Miami Director of Athletics Academic Services. “It’s a tremendous honor, and it highlights their demonstrated commitment to excellence in all areas of their lives.” A double major in psychology and human and social development, Leaf carries a 3.856 cumulative GPA. She has also been an impact player on the court for Miami, leading the Canes with 293 kills and 23 services aces. The junior outside hitter also has a team-high nine double-doubles on the year. “I am very proud of Savanah’s accomplishment,” head volleyball coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “She has been a leader for us on and off the court and it is great to see her get this recognition.”

ProCanes: Olivier Vernon

HurricaneSports.com: Even with your busy schedule nowadays, do you still follow the Hurricanes on Saturdays? And how easy is it for you since you live down in Miami? Olivier Vernon: Yes, you know I try to follow them as much as I can. I still know a lot of the guys down there, so you know I try to watch them play and make some plays out there. Look at a young guy out there, Denzel Perryman, all the guys in the defensive line, like Chickillo and Armbrister, but really a whole bunch of guys. HurricaneSports.com: What did you think of the team’s win over the Gators? Olivier Vernon: It was a big win man, especially over here. A lot of Florida Gator guys were talking a lot of crap. So, you know that was a big win man. Especially for the ACC, you know the SEC has been running things for a little while, so you know a big win against a team you only see once every five years that was a big deal. HurricaneSports.com: How far do you think Al Golden and the coaching staff can take the Hurricanes this season? Olivier Vernon: I think he can take them as far as he wants to. They have a lot of young guys and a lot of talent on the team. He has a plan. He has a plan to win a championship, so I think he’s trying to bring that program back up to that championship level. HurricaneSports.com: Besides Lamar Miller, there are plenty of former Hurricanes in the NFL, who do you speak to regularly? Olivier Vernon: I pretty much speak with my guys that I played with back at UM. If I see guys that played at UM after the game, I speak with them. If I play with someone like Jimmy Graham, I’ve spoken with him a few times after the game, and just certain times like that. Mainly I just focus on what I have to do during the season. HurricaneSports.com: Your teammate, Lamar Miller who you played at UM with, you got drafted together, and now you’re both Miami Dolphins. What’s your relationship like with Lamar? Olivier Vernon: We’re cool. We’ve always been cool since UM. We played against each together back in high school, so we’ve always been cool. HurricaneSports.com: What’s it like to have another Hurricane in the Locker Room? Olivier Vernon: It’s cool. I know the last time before us, the last time they drafted somebody from UM it was Vernon Carey. So for them to get two UM guys in the same draft, it was kinda cool to be a part of that. Especially when your teammates from down here, such as myself. It’s pretty cool. I had somebody when I was coming in here that I knew, and we keep pushing each other. HurricaneSports.com: What does it mean to be a part of the #NFLU? Olivier Vernon: It’s a special thing. Not every person can be part of that, unless they went to the U. So I appreciate it man. I’m just blessed that I have just had the opportunity to be on the Dolphins and have the opportunity to be in the league. HurricaneSports.com: How do you think being a Miami Hurricane has prepared you for life in the NFL? Olivier Vernon: A lot of the coaches I had at UM prepared me how to study film and be a great leader with my actions and put in hard work. That’s one thing that you know when Shannon was there and when Golden was there, it was about hard work and going 100% all of the time. That’s one thing that you gotta to carry to the next level if you want to be successful. HurricaneSports.com: Do you have any favorite memories from your time as a Miami Hurricane? Olivier Vernon: I remember my freshman year when we won against Florida State, and we won that game. It was pretty much like a shootout, and we won it in the last three minutes of the final quarter stopping Florida State from getting the touchdown in the redzone. That was my first big game over there in Doak Campbell Stadium, so I’m always going to remember that. HurricaneSports.com: Is there anything else that you want to tell the Canes community that we haven’t really talked about? Olivier Vernon: I wish the team the best; I’m pulling for the guys over there. If I could do it again, I really would. I would stay another year and play with them boys. The guys have a special thing over there. 38
