From the Director of Athletics Hurricanes Fans, Though we are now well into November, I can’t help but continue to reflect on what was an extremely eventful month of October was for our fall sport teams. Under the direction of Interim Head Football Coach Larry Scott, our Hurricanes have moved to 6-3 on the year and face a pivotal ACC Coastal matchup this weekend against North Carolina. Our win on the road at Duke will go down as one of the most memorable wins in school history. It is hard to believe that over two weeks have passed and people across the country are still talking about The Return. It was truly a play for the ages. My sincere appreciation and gratitude to the student-athletes on our men’s and women’s cross country teams and women’s soccer team for their dedication and hard work during the regular season and I can’t wait for next season already. Congratulations to our women’s volleyball team on a thrilling 3-1 victory over nationally-ranked Florida State last week. The atmosphere inside the Knight Gymnasium was truly electric and I was so proud of the way our team battled back after dropping a heartbreaker in Tallahassee earlier in the year. I am so pleased with the strides our volleyball team has made and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year has in store. Earlier this week, the University of Miami received its annual Graduation Success Rates numbers from the NCAA. According to the figures, our student-athletes posted a graduation rate of 89 percent, which is above the NCAA average of 83 percent for all institutions. Our GSR is a reflection of the hard work put in by our student-athletes and by our academic support systems personnel and the strong emphasis that our coaches place on education. Finally, I would like to wish our men’s and women’s basketball teams the best of luck as they open their respective regular seasons on Friday at the BankUnited Center. Both teams made strong postseason runs a year ago and with the teams returning the majority of their starters heading into this season, the 2015-2016 seasons should be exciting. Fans can purchase season tickets for both Miami men’s and women’s basketball as well as individual football game tickets (as low as $25 per game) by visiting CanesTix.com or by calling (305) 284-2263 for more information. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, @MiamiHurricanes, or visit our web site at HurricaneSports.com. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Go Canes! Blake James

Student-Athletes Boast Strong GSR Numbers

University of Miami student-athletes, posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 89 percent, according to figures released by the NCAA. The rate of success indicates that Miami is above the NCAA average of 83 percent for all institutions. Miami has the 16th-best GSR rate among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. The figures also indicate that the Miami men’s diving, women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, rowing and volleyball teams all registered perfect graduation success rates. “The University of Miami has always been committed to seeing our young men and women earn their degrees,” said Director of Athletics Blake James. “Our 89 percent graduation success rate is a reflection of the hard work put in by our student-athletes and by our academic support systems personnel and the emphasis that our coaches place on education.” The men’s swimming and diving team’s perfect GSR score marked the 11th–consecutive year of 100 percent achievement. The Miami football and men’s basketball teams posted GSR scores of 83 and 93 percent, respectively – both of which rank above the national average. The football team’s 83 percent GSR rate ranks as the 23rd-best figure in FBS. In addition, the men’s basketball team’s record-setting GSR rate of 93 percent ranks as the 14th–best total among FBS institutions. “We set a high standard for all of our student-athletes’ academic and athletic pursuits,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “We are very proud of our graduation success rate and we will continue to strive for excellence. Academic excellence is a major priority to our staff here at the University of Miami.” The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2005-2006 through 2008-09. More than 110,000 student-athletes are included in the most recent four classes using the GSR methodology, as compared to about 79,500 in the federal rate. The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshmen class of 1995. The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.

Four Canes Inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa

Four University of Miami student-athletes have been tapped into the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society this month. Emily Auld and Catalina Perez of the Hurricane soccer team Stephanie Wagner of the women’s tennis team and Alexis Wright of the women’s track team have all been inducted into ODK. A century-old national leadership society, ODK includes college students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni. Its members excel in a variety of categories, including athletics, academics and campus/community/religious service. A junior midfielder from Somerset, England, Auld has played in 46 of 52 matches in her career, with 21 starts. Last year, Auld tied for second on the team in goals and ranked third in points. This season, Auld has played in every match and scored the winning goal in Miami’s victory at FGCU. Academically, Auld has a tremendous 3.938 GPA as an accounting major. She has been on the President’s Honor Roll, which requires a 4.0 GPA, in three of her four semesters, and has made the Provost’s Honor Roll, which has a 3.75 GPA minimum, in all of them. Auld has also been chosen for the ACC Honor Roll each of the last two years. Perez, a goalkeeper from Boca Raton, Fla., has a team-high 40 saves this season. The redshirt sophomore garnered numerous major honors after her clean sheet in Miami’s double overtime win against No. 14/4 Notre Dame Oct. 2. Perez was named the College Soccer 360 National Primetime Player of the Week, the Top Drawer Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week and the ACC Defensive Player of the Week. In the classroom, Perez boasts a stellar 3.974 GPA as a finance major with a marketing minor. She has been tabbed as a President’s Honor Roll selection in three of her semesters at Miami, making the Provost’s Honor Roll in all of them. Perez, who was also tapped into the Mortar Board National Honor Society this month, made the ACC Honor Roll in 2013-14 and 2014-15. A senior from Amberg, Germany, Wagner is the ranked sixth nationally in singles by the ITA. She went 38-12 in 2014-15 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. Wagner was named an ITA All-American, First Team All-ACC, ITA National Player to Watch, and UM Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Wagner has also excelled academically, earning a superb 3.652 GPA as an economics major with minors in psychology and business administration. She has made the Dean’s List on three separate occasions and was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2013 and 2015. Wagner has been on the All-ACC Academic Team each of the past three seasons and won ACC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015. A senior, Wright has been a leader on and off the field for the Miami track team throughout her career. The Tampa, Fla. native has competed in both jumps and hurdles for the Hurricanes and has represented the team at prestigious meets such as the Tyson Invitational, Florida Relays and the ACC Championships. A microbiology and immunology major with minors in chemistry and psychology, Wright has registered an impressive 3.645 GPA at Miami. The Roland A. Hammond Scholar has earned Dean’s List honors five times, Provost’s Honor Roll accolades three times and President’s Honor Roll recognition once. The president of the UM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Wright was also selected for the Mortar Board National Honor Society earlier in the month. 15

Hoops Sets Record for Season Ticket Holders

In just his fifth season in Coral Gables, Jim Larrañaga continues to set records with the Miami men’s basketball team. With just two days remaining until the season opener, Miami has nearly sold out the ticket allotment for all home games this season at the BankUnited Center. Currently only 448 seats remain for the 2015-16 campaign. If Miami sells out those nearly 500 remaining seats, this will be the first time in Miami athletics history a team has sold out their season. Due to the record season ticket sales, seats may not be available on a single-game basis. “This is going to be a fun year and we are excited to hear that our fans are getting behind this team even before the games begin by purchasing season tickets in huge numbers,” Larrañaga said. “Our players and coaches are working extremely hard to take Miami basketball to the next level.” Entering Coach Larrañaga’s fifth season at The U, fans have bought approximately 5,000 season tickets, more than doubling the total number of season tickets sold in his first season in Coral Gables. When Coach L began his reign in Miami, fans bought 2,251 season tickets for the 2011-12 campaign. After a record-breaking season on the court in 2012-13, season tickets peaked at 3,674 for the 2013-14 year. “When we first arrived at Miami, we were told it would be tough to sell out the BankUnited Center and it would be hard to build a basketball fan base,” said Head Coach Jim Larrañaga. “But in four short years, we have set all kinds of records with both sellout crowds and student attendance.” When he arrived at Miami, Coach L set out many goals to achieve, none of which had been accomplished in Coral Gables prior to his arrival, including: 1) win the ACC; 2) beat North Carolina and Duke; 3) draw a crowd at the BankUnited Center. In Larrañaga’s second season, Miami won the ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, then went on to play into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In his first four seasons, the Canes are 3-2 against Duke and 4-3 against North Carolina. And now, in his fifth campaign, Miami is less than 500 seats away from selling out the BankUnited Center, and accomplishing three of Larrañaga’s goals. Season ticket pricing for remaining seats start at $249, following a sellout in the $130 sections. Click here to view remaining availability and pricing or call 1-800-GO-CANES to order by phone. The 17-game home schedule opens on Nov. 13 and includes a non-conference matchup with Florida on Dec. 8 plus ACC contests against Duke, Syracuse, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and two-time defending ACC Regular Season Champion, Virginia.

Canes Hoops Teams Unveil adidas Jerseys

The University of Miami men’s and women’s basketball teams, in collaboration with adidas, revealed their 2015-16 uniforms Oct. 22 at the Canes Basketball Tip-Off Social. Click here for a photo gallery This season is Miami’s first in a 12-year partnership with adidasand both programs have new orange, green and white jerseys. Invited Miami donors and media members were present for the unveiling, which was held at the Hurricane 100 Room in the BankUnited Center. Director of Athletics Blake James, fifth-year men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga and 11th-year women’s basketball coach Katie Meier all addressed those in attendance. The “Hurricanes” moniker is laser etched across the jersey’s shoulder for the players to see when they don the uniform. Lightweight knit shorts enhance breathability and ventilation, keeping players cool as the clock winds down. Jerseys were designed with the same lightweight, sweat-wicking technology used in the NBA and targeted ventilation zones on the chest, back and side to keep players cool even in the most intense moments of the game. The new men’s shorts are highlighted by updated stripes on the waistband, incorporating hurricane style cuts and patterns throughout. Players will lace-up the latest adidas basketball footwear including special team colorways of the Crazylight Boost 2015, D Lillard 1, and D Rose 6 signature shoes from NBA All-Stars Damian Lillard and Derrick Rose. Miami had 13 student-athletes compete in the 2015 ACC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships held at the Apalachee Regional Park, in Tallahassee, Florida. Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths “Everyone came out today and gave it their all,” Griffiths said. “I think there were spots in each race where they could have made a move. We will continue to get better each day and look forward to the results in our next race.” Junior Gabrielle Hesslau was Miami’s top finisher in the women’s 6K, crossing the finish line with a time of 21:43.2 that ranks third on UM’s all-time women’s 6K list. Freshman Anne Den Otter was the next Cane to finish the race, posting a time of 22:44.1 that missed qualifying for Miami’s Top 10 list. Sophomore Mulloy Manning completed the Top 3 Hurricanes with a time of 24:34.7. Carla Rodriguez, Andrea Harrah and Kelly Williamson rounded out a women’s team that placed 15th with 450 points. “Even though Gabby and Anne ran tremendous races, they both could have put themselves in better positions early in the race that would have benefitted them in the end,” Griffiths said. Miami’s men were led by sophomore Sean Grossman, who completed the 8K in 26:01.2. Junior Jon Keller was the next Hurricane man to cross the finish line, posting a time of 26:47.7, while senior Kevin Marsh finished in 27:20.9. Lachowecki Named Second Team All-ACC CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior Gracie Lachowecki of the University of Miami soccer team was selected to the 2015 All-ACC Second Team, as announced Thursday by the conference. The 5-foot-7 forward is the sixth All-ACC honoree in program history and the second in head coach Mary-Frances Monroe’s three years at the helm, joining 2013 third team choice Ashley Flinn. “I am extremely proud of Gracie about being named to the All-ACC team. This is a wonderful accomplishment,” Monroe said. “She worked so hard this year and deserved this honor. She came up big for us in so many games this season. We can’t wait to get back on the field and watch her continue to grow and be successful.” Despite missing two games due to injury, Lachowecki finished the regular season tied for third in the ACC in goals (12) and tied for fifth in points (25). Her 0.80 goals and 1.67 points per game ranked second and third, respectively. In conference play, Lachowecki was at her best. She ranked first in goals (nine) and goals per game (1.00) in ACC action, as well as tied for first in points (18) and second in points per game (2.00). Lachowecki was the first ACC player with multiple hat tricks this season and is one of just three players nationally in a Power Five conference to tally at least four goals in a single match. “It’s a great honor to be selected to one of the All-ACC teams and I’m very excited about it,” Lachowecki said. “I was happy to be making more of an impact this year as compared to previous seasons. My teammates and I put in a lot of work this year, so hopefully we can build off it and find even more success next year.” The Evansville, Ind. native is the first Hurricane to be named to the All-ACC first or second team since Kate Howarth made Second Team All-ACC in 2011. Miami & adidas Unveil ‘Military Appreciation Day’ Uniforms

The University of Miami and adidas today unveiled the Hurricanes’ new ‘Military Appreciation Day’ Primeknit alternate football uniforms, which were worn on Saturday, November 7th when the Hurricanes defeated Virginia at Sun Life Stadium. Designed in collaboration with the University of Miami athletic department, the special edition uniforms pays homage to the U.S. military and creates a bold new alternate look for the Hurricanes. Prominently featuring an oversized metallic silver “U” logo, the adizero 5-Star 4.0 gloves feature 4-way stretch mesh for compression fit and GripTack 2.0 for consistent control in all weather conditions. In-game photos Accenting the camouflage theme, the helmet, jersey and pants are a bold black and feature metallic silver oversized “U” logos on the shoulder pads, pants and helmet. The jerseys are highlighted with player numbers in the Hurricanes’ signature orange colorway and outlined with metallic silver. PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. / ATHENS, Ga. – For the first time in program history, a University of Miami women’s tennis player advanced to the finals of the prestigious Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. Sophomore Sinead Lohan cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 29 Ellen Perez of Georgia in the semifinals at the Riviera Tennis Club to clinch a berth in the final. “Sinead enjoys the battle and wants the battle,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “That is the key to her success.” The win over Perez gave Lohan, who went 38-8 en route to ITA All-American honors as a freshman, her fifth win of the young fall season against a player in the ITA top 30. Four of those top-30 wins have come in this tournament, as Lohan first knocked off third-ranked and second-seeded Julia Elbaba (Virginia) in the first round, followed by No. 18 Rachel Pierson (Texas A&M), No. 15 Taylor Davidson (Stanford) and then Perez. Lohan fell 1-6, 2-6 in the final to 2014 NCAA champion Danielle Collins of Virginia, the eighth-ranked player in the nation and the seventh seed in the field. “Sinead’s week was exactly what it needed to be for the type of physical and mental tennis she is playing,” Vallverdu said. “She knows the areas she needs to improve on in order to bring her game to the next level.” Two weeks after reaching the second round at Riviera, senior Stephanie Wagner earned a spot in the singles main draw final at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals. The sixth-ranked player in the nation and third seed in the tournament, Wagner topped Florida Gators in both the quarterfinals and the semifinals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to get to the championship. “Steffi started playing the type of tennis she ended last season with, striking the ball explosively and cutting down the court really well,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “In order to strengthen our team we needed some solid results from Wagner at this event, so I’m happy we are where we are.” Wagner posted a comeback three-set win against the Gators’ Anna Danilina, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. She then won 6-2, 6-4 over Danilina’s teammate, Belinda Woolcock, who is ranked No. 32 and seeded No. 5-8. For Wagner, the victory over Woolcock avenged her loss to the Florida junior in the round of 16 at Riviera. Wagner dropped a tough three-set match to No. 72 Caroline Brinson of Georgia, seeded No. 9-16, in the final. The Amberg, Germany native fell 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 4-6 on Brinson’s home court. Kershaw Named Team USA Manager for Rio 2016

University of Miami head swimming coach Andy Kershaw was selected as head manager for USA Swimming in preparation for next summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, it was announced. Rio 2016 will mark Kershaw’s second straight Olympics as USA Swimming’s head manager; he also served in the capacity at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Kershaw, now in his third season at the helm of the Hurricanes, was team manager at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia this past summer and the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. “It’s super exciting. Anytime you can represent your country in any way, it’s an awesome opportunity,” he said. “In this regard, being part of arguably the best sports team in the world in USA Swimming, it’s a very special thing. I feel very honored.” Kershaw said his three years as head of the Hurricanes program helped him in his candidacy, and expects that the ideas and techniques gained working with USA Swimming will benefit his own team in Coral Gables. “It’s a testament to the current team here,” Kershaw said. “I certainly wouldn’t have been given this opportunity if the team wasn’t here making an impression on people.” Kershaw said his three years as head coach in Miami will have him even more prepared for his second stint as head manager at Rio 2016. “I’ll be coming at it from a different point of view as a head coach, and the experiences I’ve had here in Miami,” he said. “I think that will put me in better position to prepare and help support the athletes that are there to win medals. That’s the great thing about it - you get to be there to help them accomplish their goals. Anytime you can be a part of that, that’s special.” Kershaw will be assisted by Stefanie Kerska. “Our support staff plays a vital role in the success of Team USA at international events. The expertise in their roles allows our athletes and coaches to focus on competing at the highest level,” USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch said. “This group has earned the trust of our staff, athletes and coaches, and I am confident they’ll help prepare our athletes to shine next summer in Rio.”

Fewer than 650 seats are still available for sale, after accounting for seats already sold as season tickets plus those held for current UM students and team use. “When we first arrived at Miami, we were told it would be tough to sell out the BankUnited Center and it would be hard to build a basketball fan base,” Head Coach Jim Larrañaga said. “But in four short years, we have set all kinds of records with both sellout crowds and student attendance.” Due to record season ticket sales, seats may not be available on a single-game basis.

@CanesFutbol Captain’s Corner: Nov. 9, 2015

The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner. With the Hurricanes’ 2015-16 campaign now complete, five seniors have their collegiate soccer careers in the rearview mirror. Monday, one of those players, midfielder Erin McGovern, reflects on her five years at Miami and all it entailed . . . Hey, Canes fans! Unfortunately, our season has come to an end. We played UNC at home on Oct. 31 and it was senior night. Despite a loss, it was a very memorable day for us seniors. Our staff and teammates organized a great ceremony to honor us seniors and it gave me time to reflect back on my five years playing for this team. While there were many ups and downs along the way, I am truly grateful for the opportunity that I had to represent The U for five years. I experienced many coaching changes, injuries and tough seasons, but the life lessons I have learned and the friendships I have made will stick with me for a lifetime. I want to thank the coaching staff—Mary-Frances, Kate and Tim—for believing in me these past couple years and giving me the opportunity to take my fifth year. I have grown so much because of them and I can’t thank them enough. I want to thank my family for their continuous support and their dedication to travel all over the country to watch me play. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Finally, I want to thank my teammates for being my family away from home. The long drives, brutal practices and tough losses were all worth it with these girls by my side. It’s hard to believe that my 17-year soccer career is officially over. I love this game for everything it has taught me and given me along the way. I would not be the same person today without this game. So a little advice to the young readers reading this: never take this game for granted. Put everything you have into this sport and it will give you the same in return. Thank you to everyone who continued to read these blogs week after week! I am so excited for the future of this program and I can’t wait to watch all the success that this team has in store. Go Canes!

Miami Rolls to Exhibition Win over NSU CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team began its 2015-16 season with an 83-53 victory in its exhibition contest Nov. 4 against Nova Southeastern. Redshirt senior guard Michelle Woods led the way with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting the Hurricanes, who jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the BankUnited Center and never looked back. “Nova is a very good team. They’re very hard to guard and I felt like we needed to outwork them,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. “They’re so dangerous with their ability to hit the three and so it was one of those deals where we had to play with a ton of mental conditioning. The physical conditioning is one thing, but the mental conditioning of the four quarters of the game and the runs.” Miami jumped out to a quick start, seizing control from the opening tip. Eight Hurricanes scored in the game’s opening quarter, during which the team shot 47.6 percent from the field and limited Nova Southeastern to an 18.8 percent clip. Through 10 minutes of action, Miami held a 22-8 advantage over the Sharks, who have made the NCAA Division II Elite Eight each of the past three seasons. After starting the second period slowly, the Hurricanes picked up their play before the break and took a 36-18 edge into the locker room. Redshirt junior forward Keyona Hayes, who missed the 2014-15 season with an ankle injury, led the team with seven points before the intermission.

“There’s not a call on the board that I can’t call [and that is] because she’s in,” Meier said of having Hayes back. “Sometimes we’re double-big so we can’t run our small lineup, sometimes we’re small so we don’t run the big lineup, but when Keyona is in I can call anything, any of the packages.” The Sharks got their offense flowing in the third quarter, connecting on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) shots from the floor in the quarter to narrowly chip away at Miami’s lead, cutting the deficit to 16, 57-1. Miami quickly pushed its lead over 20 early in the fourth quarter, using 3-pointers by junior guard Jessica Thomas and Woods during a 9-2 run to go up 67-43. The Hurricanes led by 20-plus for the final 8:27 of play en route to the 30-point win. The Hurricanes, who did not trail at any point in the contest, held the Sharks to 31.0 percent shooting and forced them into 33 attempts from 3-point range, with just nine makes (27.3 percent). Miami finished with a 52.9 percent mark from the field. All 10 Hurricanes who played scored and half had double figures. Along with Woods, junior guard Adrienne Motley scored 12 points, while Hayes, Thomas and sophomore forward/center Erykah Davenport each added 11. Woods was also the game’s leader in rebounds (eight) and co-leader assists (four) in addition to points. “I liked that we can play out an exhausted six minutes and bring in five new players while the other team is tired and I think that showed up in the fourth quarter certainly,” Meier said. “We could sub five and it deflates the other team when we sub five and don’t really skip a beat. I thought our bench was very good.” Senior guard Alexis Murphy paced the Sharks with 12 points and senior forward Molly Blomer chipped in with 11. The Hurricanes had a 52-12 edge in scoring in the paint and led 48-29 in rebounds, including 23-9 in the final 20 minutes. Miami will open the 2015-16 regular season Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. when it hosts Wright State at the BankUnited Center. Lachowecki Named Second Team All-ACC

University of Miami sophomore Michael Badgley is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2015 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced the 20 semifinalists today. Badgley, who hails from Summit, N.J., has connected on 17 of his 20 field goal attempts and is a perfect 25-of-25 in extra points. Five of Badgley’s 17 field goals made have come from in-between 40-49 yards, including his career best 49-yarder, which he drilled against Virginia Tech. Among the 20 semifinalists, Badgley’s five field goals made from 40-49 yards are tied with Utah’s Andy Phillips for the most field goals made from that distance. Badgley’s 17 field goals made are also tied with Boise State’s Tyer Rausa and Idaho’s Austin Rehkow as the most field goals made among the semifinalists. In addition, Badgley leads the ACC and ranks 10th in the NCAA in scoring, averaging 10.9 points per game. In a Sept. 19 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Badgley drilled a career-high and tied a school record with five field goals made (41, 27, 23, 28 and 28). His final field goal against Nebraska served as the game-winner. Semifinalists will be voted on by FBS Head Coaches and SIDs, a panel of kicking experts including all previous Groza finalists, and national and regional football writers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on November 24th and honored at the 24th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Awards Banquet on December 7th in West Palm Beach, Florida. The winner will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, December 10th. The award is named in honor of one of the all-time great kickers in football history, Lou Groza. Groza played 21 seasons for the Cleveland Browns setting numerous franchise records, including most games played, most points scored, and an amazing 107 consecutive games in which he scored a point. Groza was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974. Since the first Lou Groza Award was handed out in 1992, 20 finalists, including 11 winners, have gone on to appear in the NFL, earning eight trips to the Pro Bowl and taking home five Super Bowls. That list includes current NFL kickers Dan Bailey, Mason Crosby, Kai Forbath, Graham Gano, Dustin Hopkins, Sebastian Janikowski, Mike Nugent, Cairo Santos, Caleb Sturgis, and Blair Walsh.

@CanesBaseball Releases 2016 Schedule

Highlighted by seven teams that qualified for the NCAA postseason this past spring, the Miami Hurricanes’ 2016 baseball scheduled was released by head coach Jim Morris Thursday. Miami, one of eight teams to qualify for the 2015 College World Series, will play 37 of its 56 games at home inside Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, including half of a challenging 30-game ACC slate. The Hurricanes open the regular season with 13 consecutive games at Mark Light Field, where Miami finished an impressive 36-5 last season. Rutgers (Feb. 19-21), Florida (Feb. 26-28) and Manhattan (March 4-6) will visit Coral Gables in the early going before conference play begins. “My goal is always to make our schedule one of the best in the country,” Morris said. “Last year towards the end of the regular season our RPI was No. 1. Having the ACC schedule, in addition to Florida and the other in-state teams that we play, sets us up to have success for postseason seeding.” Miami will also play a midweek exhibition game in Jupiter, Fla., against the Miami Marlins on March 1. Home midweek games include tilts with FGCU (March 2), Stetson (March 9), UCF (April 13) and FAU (April 20, May 4), as well as defending NAIA national runner-up St. Thomas (Feb. 24). Included in the Hurricanes’ home conference schedule are weekends against defending ACC Atlantic Division champion Louisville (March 18-20), Clemson (March 25-27), North Carolina (April 1-3) and defending national champion Virginia (April 22-24). Miami’s road slate includes weekends at Virginia Tech (March 11-13), Notre Dame (April 8-10), Duke (April 15-17) and Georgia Tech (May 7-9). The Hurricanes end the regular season with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., and a series with rival Florida State (May 19-21) before the ACC Baseball Championship in Durham, N.C. “Our schedule is pretty comparable to last year’s,” Morris said. “You have to play well, but if you do, your RPI will be good at the end of the year. That’s what we’re focused on.” Miami opens its season with the First Pitch Banquet (Fri., Feb. 12) and the annual Fan Fest & Alumni Game at Mark Light Field on Feb. 13. “I think our fans will be excited when they look at our schedule,” Morris said. “Some of the best teams in our conference, and in the country, will be coming to town. There will be some very competitive games at The Light this spring.”

2015 SCHEDULE

CANES TRAVEL TO NORTH CAROLINA SATURDAY AFTERNOON ON ESPNU • After capturing their second straight victory with a 27-21 win over Virginia on Nov. 7, the Hurricanes travel to Kenan Stadium Saturday for a matchup with #17 North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. • UM leads the all-time series against the Tar Heels 9-8, and have won four of the last five matchups overall; the Canes are 2-4 all-time in Chapel Hill, but have won its last two road tilts (2013, 2011). • Saturday will mark Miami’s third straight road contest against a ranked team and fourth game against a ranked opponent in 2015; Miami last topped then-No. 18/22 Duke 30-20 on Oct. 31. • Miami is 2-0 under interim head coach Larry Scott - just the fourth Hurricanes’ head coach in the last 70 years with such a start, joining Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson and Larry Coker. • Saturday afternoon’s game will mark the first time North Carolina is ranked in the history of the 17-game series.

YIPPEE KAAYA

• After making his return to the lineup last time out vs. Virginia, sophomore QB Brad Kaaya remains near the top of the ACC in a number of individual categories, including passing yards (2,132, second), passing yards per game (266.5, first) and total offense (2,072 yards, fifth). • Kaaya moved into a tie for 10th place all-time at Miami with his 38th career pass TD vs. Virginia. • Kaaya has thrown just five interceptions in his last 457 attempts. He has thrown for more than 200 yards in 15 of his 21 career games at Miami and has five career 300-yard performances. • Kaaya’s career home numbers (12 games) stand out: 3,005 passing yards, 26 TDs & just 7 INTs. • Kaaya’s missed start at Duke on Oct. 31 snapped a streak of 20 straight starts dating to 2014. • Kaaya set personal bests in completions (29), attempts (49) and pass yards (405) at Florida State (Oct. 10), tossing three touchdowns with no interceptions. His passer efficiency rating was 148.8.

“THE RETURN”

• Corn Elder capped one of the most thrilling endings in college football history against Duke, a 75-yard kick return for TD as time expired to top the Blue Devils. The kick return took eight laterals and roughly 46 seconds to complete after Dallas Crawford made the initial field at the 25-yard line. • A number of Hurricanes played pivotal roles on the return; five different players touched the ball (Crawford, Elder, Jaquan Johnson, Mark Walton & Tyre Brady), while David Njoku and Charles Perry came up with timely blocks. The play went under a lengthy review before the TD was official.

GREAT SCOTT

• After missing the entire 2014 campaign with an injury, redshirt senior wide receiver Rashawn Scott has made a strong return to Miami’s wide receiver corps in 2015. • Scott ranks ninth in the ACC in receiving yards per game heading into the 11th week of the season, averaging 59.9 yards. The redshirt senior has started eight games in 2015 and leads the team in receptions (39), receiving yards (539) and receiving touchdowns (4). • Scott ranks 10th in the ACC in receptions per game (4.3) and ninth in total receptions (39). • The Melbourne, Fla., native had his second career multi-TD game (2) vs. Virginia Tech on Oct. 17.

GETTING DEFENSIVE

• Miami’s +10 turnover margin is an ACC-best and tied for ninth in FBS; UM is one of only 12 teams with a positive turnover margin in double digits. Miami has 18 turnovers gained and eight lost. • Miami’s defense has recorded 12 interceptions, tied for 18th-most in FBS and second-most in ACC. • Miami’s defense recorded its first shutout since 2010 in its season opener vs. Bethune-Cookman. • Miami ranked No. 14 nationally in total defense in 2014, allowing an average of just 329.6 yards per game - the fourth-best mark in the ACC.

After a typically short South Florida rain delay, the golfers were off to the links for 18 holes of fun, including being able to SHOOT a golf ball from an air-powered bazooka. Following the round, dinner was provided in one of the Biltmore’s ballrooms with a live and silent auction to help raise funds for student-athlete scholarships. The UMSHoF would also like to thank sponsors Ed Williamson and the good folks at Williamson Automotive Group, Betsy Stephenson and UHealth for their sponsorship, and to Judi and Bob Newman for sponsoring the golf hats in each golfer’s goodie bag.
