FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Hurricanes Fans, With the calendar turning to the month of November, our fall sports teams are now in their stretch run after having worked tirelessly since August and our winter sports seasons are just about to kick off. Our football team has two home games remaining against Pittsburgh (Nov. 5) and Duke (Nov. 26) and two road games at Virginia (Nov. 12) and NC State (Nov. 19). Through our four home games so far this season you--the fans--have truly made Hard Rock Stadium an electric home atmosphere and we have averaged more than 60,000 fans per game – a figure that ranks 28th among FBS teams. Your support never goes unnoticed and I know it energizes our student-athletes and coaches every Saturday when they take the field. We need you down the stretch and look forward to seeing you at Hard Rock Stadium in the coming weeks. Our women’s soccer program made its first appearance in the ACC Championship since 2012 and finished the regular season with a 10-8-0 (5-5-0 ACC) record, set a program record for conference victories and placed twice as high in the ACC standings as they were picked in the preseason. Head coach Mary-Frances Monroe and her staff have done a fantastic job and I look forward to their future successes. I also want to congratulate junior Sinead Lohan from the women’s tennis team and sophomore Dewi Weber from the women’s golf team for their outstanding fall seasons. Sinead qualified for the USTA/ITA National Indoor championships for the second consecutive year and Dewi won two fall tournaments en route to earning a Top 10 ranking from GolfWeek.com. As fall concludes, we turn our attention to our winter sports and our men’s and women’s basketball teams return to the hardwood following impressive 2015-16 campaigns in which both teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The women’s team opens the year ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Our men’s basketball team also is poised for a strong 2016-17 season following a memorable run to the Sweet 16 last season. I am excited about our men’s and women’s basketball programs as they head into the 2016-17 campaign and their successes both on the court and in the classroom are a testament to the leadership and guidance from Jim Larrañaga and Katie Meier. I look forward to seeing all of you at the newly named Watsco Center throughout the upcoming season. Finally, back on September 23rd, I was honored to join President Frenk and our UM family as we announced the Soffer Family’s $14 million commitment towards the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility. This project continues to generate momentum and I am thrilled to announce that we have raised $28.5 million of our $34 million goal. Groundbreaking will occur as soon as all funds have been committed. For more information on how to make a gift in support of this project, visit hurricanesfootballfacility.com or call the Hurricane Club at (305) 284-6699. Naming opportunities located within the facility are still available. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricane news and look ahead to another exciting month. Miami’s Dynamic Duo

JT3 & Money Mot

It takes Jessica “JT” Thomas less than two minutes to explain why she thinks this Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team will be different. Listen closely to her voice - gaining in fervor as she recalls a devastating first-round exit in last year’s NCAA Tournament, like a preaching pastor reaching the key lesson in a Sunday sermon - and it’s simply hard not to believe. “The whole offseason was based on that feeling. I was distraught after that game. When I came back, after I took a week or so off, every time I worked out I thought about that South Dakota State game. I told my mom to remind me every day how I felt after that South Dakota State game. I know it’s something that burns inside of all of us. We don’t want to go back to that. We were supposed to be a Sweet 16- or Elite Eight-caliber team last year. We did fall short. I think that was a lesson learned to keep us going. Coming back into this year, we don’t want to feel that feeling. Ever.” Pause. “Ever.” Pause. “EVER again.” She continues. “For the seniors – myself, Keyona Hayes and Adrienne Motley – that’s something that drives us. That’s something that drives us. We want to win an ACC Championship and we want to be a Sweet 16 or Elite Eight team, Final Four, whatever the case may be – we’re going to make this senior year something to remember. We don’t want to go out like that. We put in way too much work. We do too much. “We have a standard here at the University of Miami, and we fell short – not only for the team but for the University. That is something that drives us, every single day.”

Close your eyes, and you can almost hear the ‘amen!’ The duo share a special relationship. They’re always together – often at the Buffalo Wild Wings near campus ringing through the Watsco Center rafters. to discuss practice, the team and life. Motley, her backcourt partner over the past three seasons, would check in on her best friend constantly in “Did JT tell you about our trips to B-Dubs?” Mot asks playfully. “She called me an hour ago when I was taking the offseason. a nap. I’m sure I’m going to hear about that soon enough, “Are you good? Are you alright?” Motley remembers I haven’t called her back yet.” asking Thomas, distraught over fifth-seeded Miami’s 7471 loss to an under-ranked and No. 12-seeded Jackrabbits Thomas smiles when asked about her wing-eating team. partner. “We saw each other in the training room one morning and then bumped into each other about 20 minutes later on campus,” Thomas said. “She ran up to me and screamed, ‘JT!” before giving me a huge hug. It’s like we hadn’t seen each other in years. “We’re always having fun, but on the court, it’s all business.” That same fire that burned in Thomas over the offseason was reignited in Motley in the first team meeting of the new season. Head coach Katie Meier replayed a video of the postgame press conference from that disheartening loss for the team.

“We just kept saying, ‘We needed more time. We needed more time,’” Motley said. “I knew if we had more time we would have won. For myself, in the offseason, I said, ‘This is it. You don’t have any more time. You have to play every rep as if it’s your last.’

seven years, and – after staring 10-0 – made it to the ACC Championships semifinals for just the second time ever last spring. None of that matters now, though

Motley, Thomas and their teammates are focused on one thing: making this season the best in Miami Hurricanes For an engine returning 10 scholarship players from a history. team that tied for the fifth-most wins in a single season in the history of the program, the added fuel might be “This is our last chance. You have to give it all, and do what you have to do,” Motley said. “We can’t wait to get just enough to put Miami over the top. it started.” The Hurricanes have gone dancing in five of the last six seasons. They’ve won 20 games or more in six of the last “That was my fuel.”

ACC MEDIA DAY

The culmination of the recruiting process takes place when a prospect signs the National Letter of Intent (NLI) with their chosen institution. By signing the NLI, the prospect becomes officially committed to the institution they sign with. For many of our teams at the University of Miami, November 9th marks the first point in a prospective student-athlete’s career that he or she is able to sign an NLI. During the early signing period in November, all sports except football and soccer are allowed to sign prospects to NLIs. From November 9th to November 16th, the University of Miami will be receiving NLI’s faxed, e-mailed or mailed by prospective student-athletes who are committing to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UM. This is a good time to examine some of the most frequently asked questions regarding a prospect who has signed a National Letter of Intent. Q. How long is a prospective student-athlete considered to be a prospect? A. A prospective student-athlete remains a prospect even after signing a NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. The prospect, the University, and boosters are all governed by the recruiting regulations until the prospect reports for regular season practice, attends their first day of classes in any regular term, or attends an institutional orientation session that is open to all incoming students within 14 calendar day prior to the opening day of classes (i.e., fall or spring). Q. Is it permissible for boosters to contact a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No on- or off-campus contact (including cards, email, texts or telephone calls) may be made to prospects or their parents by boosters. Q Is it permissible for a booster to arrange summer housing for a prospect who has signed an NLI? A. No. NCAA rules prohibit boosters from making housing arrangements for student-athletes or prospects, even if they have signed an NLI to attend the University of Miami. For example, it is not permissible to offer reduced-rate rental opportunities to prospects. Q. Is it permissible for a booster to assist a prospect who has signed an NLI with precollege expenses? A. No. Neither the University of Miami nor its boosters are permitted to offer, provide, or arrange financial assistance to cover a prospect’s expenses for any period prior to their enrollment. This applies even to those prospects who have signed an NLI or financial aid agreement to attend the University of Miami. Please contact the University of Miami Athletics Compliance Department with any questions regarding NCAA, ACC or University of Miami rules or regulations at athleticscompliance@miami.edu or 305-2842692. Also, please remember to always ASK BEFORE YOU ACT! Sincerely,

Craig Anderson Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Athletics Compliance Office | University of Miami Athletics Schwartz Athletic Center | 5821 San Amaro Drive | Coral Gables, FL 33146 Direct: (305) 284-2692 | Fax: (305) 284-2276 29

NOVEMBER 2016

LAURA CORNELIUS GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS | MAJOR: PUBLIC HEALTH How has the adjustment to living in the United States been? I’d say I’m pretty well adjusted right now, I feel comfortable and at home here at the U. What was your favorite moment from your time at Miami so far? I have a couple favorite moments. Making it into the NCAA Tournament was pretty cool, as well as my very first ACC game where I just couldn’t miss a shot. My parents and brother were also in the stands watching so that was pretty special. What is the best part of living/going to college in Miami? The fact that you just can put on shorts and a shirt 365 days a year is so nice. The U itself is a top-level school and I’m still amazed everyday at how pretty our campus is.

What makes Coach Meier so great to play for? She just makes you better every single day. She is a very passionate and caring women and wants to get the best out of her players. It is an honor and so much fun to play for her. How excited are you for the 2016-17 season to begin? Super excited. I think we have a great team with a lot of potential this year. Last season didn’t end the way we wanted it to, so we are hungrier than ever. What players do you look up to or try to emulate? I look up to my seniors, Jessica Thomas and Adrienne Motley. They are both great leaders and their work ethic amazing. One day I hope to have a pull-up game like Mot has and Jessica is just one of the best point guards I’ve ever played with so far. Her court vision is incredible. What are you most looking to improve upon as a player during your sophomore season? I want to be more of a leader on the court, and as well as shooting the 3-ball, I want to improve my midrange game.

Hurricanes Sweep FIU at Miami Duals The University of Miami cross country team defeated crosstown rival FIU in the 2016 Miami Duals. Miami’s men’s team had a perfect score of 15, taking the top five places in the men’s 5K, while the women earned the top four spots in the women’s 5K en route to a victory. Overall, the Hurricanes had 17 studentathletes compete at the Miami Duals, hosted at Larry and Penny Thompson Park in Miami. “It was great to have a home meet back in Miami again,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “We had several family members and friends and fans supporting us. It’s good to have a good event in front of a home crowd and we look forward to making this an annual meet. The Hurricane men hit the 5K course first, beginning at 8 a.m., and Sean Grossman crossed the finish line 16:10.5 later to win the individual title. “I thought it went pretty well,” Grossman said. “It was a good effort from the whole team. We tried to just pack it up early on and push it later. We all finished strong and looking good going to ACCs next week.” Jon Keller (16:18.2), Nick Kaleel (16:25.5), Michael Miano (16:37.7) and Tom Gassner (16:51.2) followed to give Miami a perfect score of 15, as the Hurricanes took the top five places in the race. “The men ran very well today,” Griffiths said. “For them to sweep the top five places and have a perfect score, it’s an indicator of how much they’ve grown since the start of the season.”

“Time wasn’t the ultimate goal today, it was about keeping the spread together as close as possible and they did that,” Griffiths said. “If we could have a similar effort a week from now, I’m confident we could do some things that haven’t been done with this program in a while.” Gabrielle Hesslau continued to be the top female runner for the Hurricanes, winning the women’s 5K with a time of 18:29.0. The senior was followed by three of her teammates, as Anne Den Otter finished second (18:59.3), Mulloy Manning placed third (19:53.3) and Carla Rodriguez was fourth (20:17.8). “I am happy for team wins on both sides,” Hesslau said. “Today was a more controlled effort, where next week we will need to go out harder. It is definitely a different style of competition at ACCs.” Megan Brown, Sophia Corde, Laura Puentes and Samantha Chenkin also ran for a Miami women’s team that placed first with a score of 18. “I feel the women ran a great, controlled race today,” Griffiths said. “Sweeping the top four places shows that they’re in the right position in our last regular season meet. I hope this last outing will give both teams the confidence that they’re ready to race at a high level if they keep their mind focused for the entirety of the race.” The Miami Duals were Miami’s first home cross country event since hosting the Miami Greentree Invitational in 2012. It was also the Hurricanes’ final race before the 2016 ACC Cross Country Championships.

NOVEMBER 2016

Name: Brandon Taylor Year in School: Freshman Major: Exercise Science Hometown: Friendswood, Texas Q&A Q: Why did you decide to attend the University of Miami? A: “I chose the Unviersiy of Miami because when I came on my visit the team felt like a family, unlike other schools I visited where they weren’t as close together like the University of Miami track team.” Q: What was the best aspect of being part of Miami’s Track & Field teams so far? A: “Getting coached by Coach Diego [Flaquer]. He recruited me to run at Oklahoma State, but I didn’t pick that school. When I found out he would be coaching here, it made my decision even better.” Q: What are some of your goals for the season? A: “My goals are to stay healthy, to make indoor and outdoor NCAA nationals and to win the ACC 60 meters with a new personal best and also the 100m dash.” Q: What do you feel was the biggest challenge you came across in since your arrival? A: “Time management and breaking old habits have been the biggest adjustments. I love to eat a lot. I will just sit around and eat if I have nothing to do, which is bad because I will start to gain more weight than I need.” Q: What is the biggest difference between previous training and your training now at the University of Miami? A: “The training I did back at home varied through the week, almost like here. I would do 10x200s at 26-27 seconds on the first week of practice or even 600s. With Coach Diego, the training is more thought out, he is taking me from Day 1 like I haven’t ran to correct the little things that later on make the biggest difference.” Q: What do you do to prepare right before a meet? A: “I like to take an ice bath and I will always eat Olive Garden. The day of the meet, I will eat as a snack a honeybun and jellybeans. For lunch, I would eat Subway.” Q: What do you do away from practice and studying to relax? A: “I really just like staying in my room and watching any sport that is in on TV, or just hanging with my teammates and just chilling with them.”

A senior defender, Auld has maintained a 3.96 GPA as an accelerated accounting major and started 16 of Miami’s 17 matches this season. “I am very excited for Emily to receive this honor,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “She works hard not only on the field, but in the classroom. Hailing from Banbury, England, Auld is the first Miami soccer player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition since Brittney Macdonald and Brittney Streinbruch were District 4 honorees in 2010. @CanesVB

2016 @CANESVB SCHEDULE

Quick Hits with Alyssa Basdavanos

Junior is in first year playing volleyball after coming to Miami as a rower Q: What has your time at Miami been like so far? A: My time at Miami introduced me into a culturally diverse world unlike any other place. Coming from the melting pot of the Pacific, I always loved being surrounded by so many different types of people. Being in Miami has broadened my horizons even further than I could have imagined. The energy of the people, the city, and the school has given me the confidence to succeed here. Q: What has been your favorite part of being a Hurricane? A: I love that people are proud to be a Hurricane, and I love how renowned the University of Miami has become because of it. We have the spirit of being at a large public school, while reaping the benefits of being at a smaller private school. Q: Has anyone taken you under their wing, shown you around and helped with your transition to college? If so, who, and how have they helped you adjust? A: Throughout my freshman year I made really good friends both inside and outside of athletics. One of the upperclassman swimmers, Heather Arseth, really took me under her wing. We both loved the water, we were both neuroscience majors, and people even said that we looked alike. Heather was a really great role model for me because of her dedication and passion for both school and sports. Seeing someone like that was motivating and inspiring. I ended up moving in with her and two other seniors last semester. I lived with Heather, Stephanie Wagner from women’s tennis, and Laura Hendee from women’s golf. All three seniors were incredible athletes, but also incredible people. I am very lucky to have met them and become good friends with them. Q: What has been the biggest adjustment for you since you arrived? A: The biggest adjustment for me has definitely been the flight all the way over to Miami. It’s a long way to go, but there were many parallels between Miami and Hawai’i, which really helped me to transition smoothly into college. Q: Are there any classes you are taking so far that you like? A: I loved organic chemistry and biology (evolution and diversity). Q: What made you choose your major? A: I am very meticulous about everything I do. I like to break everything down, fully understand it, and then see where it fits in the big picture and how it connects to other fields. I chose to become a neuroscience major because of an English class in high school. The class looked at rhetoric and how it affected how people would react to the paper, article, speech, etc. In this class, I was introduced how rhetoric affected our brains. I quickly became immersed on how an English class could be so related to science. Both of my parents are in the medical field, so the interest in science was always lingering. Neuroscience fascinated me because I found that I could relate it to everything that I did. Q: What are you most excited for about being in college? A: I’m excited to have so many opportunities laid out in front of me. There are so many different things to get involved in, it’s just a matter of what you want to pursue.

Watsco Center is Sold Out

McClellan on NBA Roster

The men’s basketball program has sold out its home arena for the second consecutive season. In just his fifth season in Coral Gables, Coach Jim Larrañaga and Miami sold out the season ticket allotment for all home games in the 2015-16 campaign. It was the first time in Miami athletics history a team sold out their season ticket allotment. And now, the team has sold out the Watsco Center in back-to-back seasons.

Miami graduate Sheldon McClellan signed a partial guarantee contract with the Washington Wizards, and on the NBA’s opening day, McClellan played in his first professional game. Against Atlanta, he scored seven points and had a steal in four minutes.

CHRIS HERNDON IV SENIOR | FULLBACK | ATHENS, GA. What is the most exciting thing about being a student-athlete at Miami? “I think the games get me the most excited. I like being busy, so of course it is time consuming. I just don’t like being bored. But I really like just the competition of it and the feeling of going out and competing every Saturday and even practices. It’s fun, I like the thrill.” Who was the biggest influence in getting you to play football? “My dad was my biggest influence on getting me to play football. When I was younger, I was more of a basketball player. I didn’t even want to play football, but he made me play it one day and I started liking it more and more as I got older. Around high school is when I really started liking it more and that’s when it became my favorite sport.” How would you describe your experience at Miami? “It’s amazing. I’ve had fun so far. I don’t regret coming here at all.”

How would you describe yourself? “I am just a really calm and relaxed person. I know how to channel my emotions pretty well. I just feel like I have a lot of control over my emotions and I just don’t let myself get too high or too low. It’s one of the things my high school coach preached a lot before every game, after every game and whether we won or not. If you win by 30, you can’t get too high about this because there is another team coming for you next week. If we lose, you can’t get too low because the season isn’t over. It’s just something that has always stuck in my head.” What is the best advice you have received and who did it come from? “The best advice I have ever received came from Coach Stancil - my high school coach. He said when you are focused and you are playing to the best of your ability, the sky is limitless for you.” How much do you and your teammates like playing in Hard Rock Stadium? “We all like it. After fall training camp, the coaches gave us a little time to go up and see the stadium before the season began. We all just walked around and just looked up in awe and said to ourselves, ‘yeah, we are about to play in this stadium.’”

Our club eight had a strong row finishing 11th which also guarantees a spot for next year.” All eyes were on Miami’s lone entry in Sunday’s Women’s Championship 4+ event. Recruiting Class Picks Up Second Top-15 Ranking CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Miami Hurricanes’ 2016 recruiting class picked up another national ranking when Baseball America rated the team’s newcomers as the No. 13 class nationwide. Miami’s class was ranked No. 14 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in late September. The group, ranked as the third-best in the ACC, continues a longstanding trend of top recruiting classes arriving on campus; Miami’s 2014 group was ranked No. 20, its 2013 class was ranked No. 6 and its 2012 newcomers were ranked No. 9. Coming off its second straight College World Series appearance and 25th in program history, Miami lost six players to the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft this past spring. The Hurricanes won their second ACC Regular Season Championship in the past three seasons, and secured their third straight ACC Coastal Division title in 2016. The Hurricanes had two newcomers selected in the 2016 MLB Draft, both by Cleveland: catcher Michael Amditis and right-handed pitcher/infielder Mason Studstill. Studstill was selected in the 22nd round and Amditis was selected in the 37th round. Two junior college transfers were drafted out of high school in 2014: junior outfielders James Davison and Hunter Tackett. Davison, who arrived at Miami after two seasons at Howard Junior College (Texas), was selected in the 39th round by the Chicago White Sox in 2014. Tackett, who spent his freshman season at Auburn and was one of 12 junior college First-Team All-Americans at Northwest Florida State in 2015, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 36th round. Two local products who figure to make an immediate impact at Miami are right-handed pitcher/infielder Gregory Veliz (Key West, Fla.) and righthanded pitcher Evan McKendry (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Both were highly ranked entering the 2016 MLB Draft, but their strong commitment to the Hurricanes resulted in their arrival on campus this fall. Three players in the class were ranked among the top 500 MLB Draft-eligible players this past spring by Baseball America: Amditis (No. 200), Veliz (No. 304) and Studstill (No. 455).

Piric Releases Men’s Tennis Spring Schedule

The University of Miami men’s tennis team will host 15 matches this spring at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, head coach Aljosa Piric announced. The spring season begins Jan. 20 and features nine non-conference matches, followed by 12 Atlantic Coast Conference matchups. Nine of Miami’s 12 ACC matchups are against opponents that finished the 2016 season in the ITA national rankings. “Playing in the ACC, we will always have great competition, and we are excited about that. We have some great matches at home this year, ACC rivals Clemson, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and, the national defending champion, Virginia. In addition, we have some great out of conference matches such as, a Southeastern Conference rival, Mississippi State.” Piric said. “We open up with 11 home matches and play 15 home matches in total. We are excited about that; playing in the heat should be and will be a home court advantage for our squad. We are excited to kick things off in a couple of months and see how we matchup against some of the best teams in the nation.“ Non-conference play begins with the Hurricanes hosting St. John’s (Jan. 20) and North Florida (Jan. 22) in Coral Gables. After just two matches in January, the Hurricanes open a stretch with five total contests in February, seven in March and seven in April, including matches against 11 ranked foes.
