Johnson ACC Rookie of the Year
University of Miami freshman Duke Johnson (pictured with ACC Commissioner John Swofford) was named both the ACC Offensive and Overall Rookie of the Year, announced Tuesday by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA). Johnson is the first Hurricane to win the rookie award following a breakout season in which he broke Clinton Portis’ 13-year-old school rushing record for freshmen, ending the season with 947 yards. “It means a lot being the first in Miami history to win this award it means so much to me and the team because I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Johnson said. “And this is just another way to make my mom proud and show how I really appreciate the sacrifices she made for me when I was younger.” On Monday, the freshman speedster was selected to the All-ACC second team as both a running back and specialist. The five-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree posted one of the best all-around freshman seasons in program history, accumulating 2,070 all-purpose yards (second-most in program history) and 13 touchdowns in 2012. The Miami, Fla., product also set a Miami single-season record with 892 kick return yards and two touchdowns on 27 tries. He leads the ACC with a 33.04 kick return average - the fourth-best in FBS. His 947 rushing yards are the fourth-most among FBS freshmen, and he is tied as the national leader with 11 all-purpose plays of 50+ yards.

Green Named Piccolo Co-Winner
University of Miami redshirt junior defensive end Shayon Green (pictured with ACC Commissioner John Swofford) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2012 Brian Piccolo Award co-winner, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced Thursday. Green shares the honor with Florida State senior running back Chris Thompson. The Piccolo Award has been given annually since 1972 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the “most courageous” football player in the ACC. Piccolo was the 1965 ACC Athlete of the Year and played for the Chicago Bears before his career was cut short when he was stricken with cancer. His courageous fight against that disease was an inspiration to the Bears and the entire football community. Green had to overcome four different major injuries. He twice tore the ACL in his right knee, once tore the meniscus in his right knee and also suffered a wrist dislocation forcing him to miss all or a major part of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. Finally healthy, Green led the Hurricanes in tackles and was one of the key leaders on the young Miami defense, with 38 of his 67 tackles unassisted. Green also added 2.0 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. He is the first Miami defensive lineman to lead the Hurricanes in tackles for a season in more than 30 years. “Shayon is an amazing individual with an unparalleled work ethic,” Miami head coach Al Golden said. “I cannot think of anyone who exemplifies the ideals of Brian Piccolo or is more deserving of this award than him. He has overcome a dislocated wrist and three separate knee surgeries to become our leading tackler and team captain. His commitment and perseverance is an inspiration to us all.” Green is the third Miami player to be chosen to receive the Piccolo Award in the eight years since the Hurricanes became an ACC member, joining Frank Gore (2004) and Glenn Sharpe (2006). 14

Canes Take Down No. 6 Lady Lions
Morgan Stroman scored 15 points, leading Miami to a 69-65 victory over No. 6 Penn State on Thursday night. Suriya McGuire’s layup with 14 seconds remaining broke a 65-all tie. Alex Bentley had a chance to tie it but her jumper with 5 seconds left bounced off the rim. Miami’s Michelle Woods grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Woods made both free throws with 2 seconds remaining to secure the win for Miami (5-1). Stefanie Yderstrom finished with 13 points and Woods scored 11 for the Hurricanes. Maggie Lucas led the Lions (5-1) with a game-high 20 points. Woods’ 3-point play with 35 seconds left gave the Hurricanes a 65-62 lead. The Lions Lucas hit a 3 to tie it with 23 seconds remaining. Bentley’s layup with 8:47 remaining in the second half gave the Lions their first lead at 51-49. Lucas’ two free throws with 8:22 left increased Penn State’s lead to 53-49 and ended a 10-0 run. Miami responded with a 3-pointer and jumper from Yderstrom and a layup by Stroman in the next 3:01 and retook the lead, 56-53. Penn State rallied from a 10-point deficit midway through the first half and outscored Miami, 13-4, during a 5:03 stretch. Bentley’s short jumper with 5:35 remaining pulled the Lions to 24-23. The Lions twice tied it but couldn’t overtake Miami in the first half. After Mia Nickson’s basket with 2:00 left tied it at 29, the Hurricanes finished the first half on a 7-0 run. Woods’ driving layup with 15 seconds remaining ended the surge and gave Miami at 36-29 lead at halftime. The Hurricanes forced nine Penn State turnovers in the first 4:25 and opened an 8-0 lead. Stroman’s two baskets keyed Miami’s early surge. The Lions tied their season high for turnovers for a game in the first half with 20. Keyona Hayes’ short jumper with 11:48 remaining gave Miami their first double-digit lead at 20-10. UM beat a ranked Big Ten opponent for the first time since Dec. 19, 1991 when the Canes topped Purdue at home 65-63. Stefanie Yderstrom tied her career-high with seven assists on the night. She previously had seven against SIUE on Feb. 7, 2010. The Hurricanes had a season-high 19 steals. The previous best was 15 in the season opener against North Florida. Morgan Stroman had a season-high five steals (topping two, last done against Radford on Nov. 24). Michelle Woods and Stefanie Yderstrom both had a season-high four steals. Woods previously had two at Richmond, and Yderstrom had three multiple times. Miami beat a top 10 opponent for the first time since being on the road at Maryland on Feb. 12, 2012

Jonathan Iglesias | East Lansing, Mich.
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine How did you become a Hurricanes fan? “My dad is an alumnus and has always contributed to the school so I’ve been a Canes fan since the day I was born. I still have the Miami Herald sports sections celebrating the 1987, 1991, and 2001 national championships.” Do you find it difficult supporting Miami while living in Michigan? “Supporting Miami anywhere outside of South Florida is tough since the national media likes to characterize Miami fans as ‘fair-weathered fans.’ People seem to either love or hate Miami, but the ESPN documentary definitely helped expand the fan base.” Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city? “East Lansing is a college town. It’s all Spartans, all the time around here. My living room is the only place in the city to watch Hurricanes games.” Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Michigan? “I wouldn’t characterize anyone I’ve met as a true Canes fan. This is Big 10 country and we all know the Big 10 hasn’t fared well against teams from down south.” How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games? “I try to go to as many games as I can when I’m back in Miami. Other than that, I try to catch as many games as I can and I’m always in my Canes gear. My favorite piece of Canes gear has to be a hat I had signed by my favorite coach, Jimmy Johnson.” Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes basketball fan? “My favorite Hurricanes basketball memory has to be when Jack McClinton put up 38 points in our opening round game in the 2008 NCAA tournament. I remember him going crazy in the second half. He must have scored like 30 of his 38 points after half time. Then we went to the second round and almost took down Texas. The Tim James-led teams also had some great moments in the early 2000s.”

Hall of Fame: Russell Maryland
Russell Maryland College Football HOF, 2011 Russell Maryland was a member of Miami’s 1987 and 1989 National Championship teams, but his most prolific work came as a senior in 1990. During his final season with the Canes, he recorded 96 tackles (54 solo), including 10.5 quarterback sacks, seven tackles for losses and 19 quarterback pressures. He also forced five fumbles and broke up two passes. As a result, he became the first Hurricane to win the 1990 Outland Trophy, given to the best defensive lineman in college football. He was also a unanimous All-America selection and named the United International Press Lineman of the Year. The defensive tackle’s best game came in the 1991 Cotton Bowl against the University of Texas. He recorded three sacks for a loss of 28 yards and nine tackles, while the Hurricanes’ defense caused five Longhorn turnovers, each leading to UM touchdowns. The 46-3 Miami victory remains the largest point differential in Cotton Bowl history. Maryland finished his college career with 279 tackles, 25 tackles for losses and 20.5 quarterback sacks. He was the Jack Harding Most Valuable Player Award winner in 1990 and led the Hurricanes to four consecutive bowl berths, two national championships and an overall record of 45-3-0 during his career. In the 1991 NFL Draft, Maryland was selected as the first overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 1993 and won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys in 1992, ‘93 and ‘95. He played professionally for nine years with the Cowboys (1991-95), Oakland Raiders (1996-99) and Green Bay Packers (2000).

VIEW FROM THE U FOOTBALL
BY CHRIS YANDLE
A Night of Legends Shayon Green, Duke Johnson honored in Charlotte One of the coolest perks to this job is that I get work with outstanding student-athletes, who are good people both on and off the playing field. This past weekend, I traveled to Charlotte, N.C., for the ACC Football Championship game, but I was also able to witness junior DE Shayon Green and freshman RB Duke Johnson receive their ACC awards in front of more than 600 people at the ACC Night of Legends event on the eve of the championship game. Green was one of two players named as the ACC’s 2012 Brian Piccolo Award winner, sharing the honor with Florida State senior RB Chris Thompson. Green is the third Miami player to be chosen to receive the Piccolo Award in the eight years since the Hurricanes became an ACC member, joining Frank Gore (2004) and Glenn Sharpe (2006).
Johnson joined Green in Charlotte as the ACC media’s Overall and Offensive Rookie of the Year. Johnson is the first Hurricane to win the rookie award following a breakout season in which he broke Clinton Portis’ 13-year-old school rushing record for freshmen, ending the season with 947 yards. He also amassed 2,070 all-purpose yards – the second-most in program history. Friday’s business trip concluded with the Legends dinner, but began early that morning as Shayon, Duke and the league’s 12 mascots visited the First Ward Creative Arts Academy in Charlotte. Both Duke and Shayon spoke to the 500 elementary school students on the importance of school and receiving an education. In the afternoon, they visited the Levine Children’s Hospital, where they met and took photos with patients and staff all throughout the hospital. When their names were called upon to receive their award, both Shayon and Duke were humbled and incredibly grateful for the honor. During his speech, Shayon made sure to mention head athletic trainer Vinny Scavo for his help, while Duke thanked his mom for all of her sacrifices she made when he was younger.

JOHNSON INDUCTION Former Miami Hurricanes head coach Jimmy Johnson will be one of 17 former players and coaches inducted Tuesday into the College Football Hall of Fame. Johnson becomes the third coach from the Hurricanes to earn such an honor, joining Jack Harding (1980) and Andy Gustafson (1985). In his five seasons at UM (1984-88), Johnson compiled a 52-9 record and guided the Canes to the 1987 National Championship. That season, Miami went a perfect 12-0 and defeated six nationally ranked teams, including a 20-14 victory over then-No. 1 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Johnson left Miami after the 1988 season to replace the legendary Tom Landry as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. His five-year stay in Dallas culminated with back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1992 and 1993. Johnson is one of just six men to coach consecutive Super Bowl champions. Johnson becomes the ninth man with ties to UM to be selected into the College Football Hall of Fame, including players Don Bosseler (1990), Ted Hendricks (1987), Gino Torretta (2009), Arnold Tucker (2008), and Bennie Blades (2006) and Russell Maryland (2011) – who both were coached by Johnson.

Volleyball Finishes 25-6 Canes earned fourth-straight NCAA Tournament bid The University of Miami volleyball team ended its season Friday in the NCAA Tournament, falling to College of Charleston in a five-set thriller. It was the fourthstraight appearance for the Hurricanes in the postseason. Not to be lost in the defeat, the program put up at least 20 wins for the fifth time under head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch and set a schoool record with 17 Atlantic Coast Conference victories. The Canes finished second in the league for the second consecutive year. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, the squad tied a conference record with six players named to the All-ACC Team, including junior Alex Johnson, junior Taylor Hollins, sophomore Alexis Mourning, junior Ryan Shaffer, sophomore Emani Sims and senior Nrithya Sundararaman. Lantagne Welch also won ACC Coach of the Year for the second time. “We have had a tremendous season and to see so many players recognized is a great
honor,” Lantagne Welch said. “It shows the incredible balance and how so many people have contributed so much to our team. This has been a special year and even the players who are not being recognized have meant so much to our success.” Sundararaman, the lone senior on the team, wrapped up her career with 2,358 assists, thirdmost in program history. She put up 54 assists in her final match, as she will next attend medical school in hopes of becoming a doctor. The Hurricanes will return the remainder of the roster in 2013, with hopes of acheiving even more.

“Our identity is toughness.” The Hurricanes take down the sixth-ranked Penn State Lady Lions
A lot can change in two weeks. Eleven days after allowing 46 points before halftime in a loss to No. 16 Tennessee, the Hurricanes put together a defensive first half for the ages en route to a 69-65 win over No. 6 Penn State at the BankUnited Center. Most importantly, the Hurricanes might have finally found an identity. “We had a mentality tonight that we want to be known for our defense,” head coach Katie Meier said. “I think we can put a very quick lineup on the court, but I think [our] strength... really wore them down.” By halftime, the Lady Lions’ dynamic duo of Maggie Lucas (21.2-point average) and Alex Bentley (13.2) had a whopping eight points combined. The Hurricanes may have been leading by only seven at the buzzer, but the mentality heading into the locker room oozed an unfamiliar confidence. “In years past, if we hadn’t hit some shots, it would have taken our defensive effort down,” Meier said. “But tonight was the first time we missed some shots, and you could hear the bench, the coaches, people on the court, all saying, ‘Let’s do it with our defense.’” Rewind to two weeks ago, and a night like Thursday might have seemed like a pipe dream. The Lady Vols shot 57.7% in the first half, entering the locker room up by 25 points. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, shot 20% in the frame. “We’ve been very honest about us needing to form our identity,” Meier said. “I haven’t sat here and said that we were great yet. I haven’t felt like we were meeting our talent level, with how we were playing.” But after the disappointing loss to Tennessee, the Hurricanes took wins over Florida Atlantic
and Radford, holding those opponents to 27.9 and 31.3 shooting percentages, respectively. With the help of another good scouting report from assistant coach Darrick Gibbs, the Hurricanes made their point clear from the get-go: this isn’t going to be easy. “I think our identity is toughness. That makes a coach smile,” Meier said. “We’re very resilient.” Miami opened the game on an 8-0 run, forcing nine Penn State turnovers in just less than five minutes of action. The Lady Lions would finish the first half with 20 turnovers, two more than their season average and four more than their last game’s total against Cal State Northridge. By game’s end, Penn State had coughed up the ball a season-high 29 times. “Miami is a really good defensive team,” Lady Lions’ head coach Coquese Washingotn said. “They’re long, they’re active, and they’re athletic. They did a good job of getting their hands on balls, especially on our post-entry passes.” Though Penn State would come back and take a lead in the second half, late magic from the Hurricanes sealed a 69-65 victory - their most important of the season, in more ways than one. “I know this team will not get too excited about the win,” Meier said. “We feel like we left a lot of points on the board still...We’re going to get right back to work, and that’s what I appreciate about them.”
ACC/Big Ten Challenge After its 69-65 win over No. 6 Penn State, UM beat a ranked Big Ten opponent for the first time since Dec. 19, 1991 when the Canes topped Purdue at home 65-63.
1,000-POINT CLUB Miami senior Morgan Stroman became the 22nd Hurricane to score 1,000 points in her career, as she scored seven points against FAU in the first game of the UM Thanksgiving Tournament. Riquna Williams and Shenise Johnson were the last two Canes to surpass the milestone.

University of Miami Traditions UM Sports Hall of Fame highlights of some of Miami’s famous traditions
“Hail to The Spirit” Fight Song The original University Song, “Hail to the Spirit”, was written the first week after the school’s 1926 opening by two students...the words by Dale Clark ‘29 and the music by Ted Kennedy ‘30. It was played by Jo Astoria, then the leader of the band at Coral Gables Country Club. In 1927, Astoria had the song copyrighted. Years later, when it was discovered that the University did not own the rights to the song, so a deal was made between Astoria and Founding President Bowman Foster Ashe...the school got the rights to the song, Astoria was given a letter stating his infant grandson was to be given a full scholarship to the University...which he received when he enrolled at Miami in 1965. The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships. All tax-deductible donations help showcase their achievements for Hurricanes fans to enjoy for generations to come.
