@CanesHoops Jumps to No. 15 in Both Polls
After improving its record to 7-0 with two more wins last week, the undefeated Miami Hurricanes moved up to No. 15 in both college basketball polls released Monday. Miami jumped five spots in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, and moved up two spots from No. 17 in the Associated Press top 25. The Hurricanes have opened the regular season 7-0 for the first time since 2009-10, when they opened the year 8-0. The 7-0 start marks the best for Miami under head coach Jim Larra単aga, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program. The Hurricanes made their debut in the major polls last week after beating then-No. 7 Florida on the road and successfully capturing the Charleston Classic championship. Miami topped host Charlotte 77-74 on Nov. 25 and bested visiting South Alabama 87-75 on Nov. 28 to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games.

UM Mourns Passing of Edna C. Shalala
Miami Athletics is deeply saddened by the passing of Edna C. Shalala, a longtime supporter of athletics at the University of Miami and the mother of current president Donna E. Shalala. Edna was honored on her 100th birthday with the creation of the Edna C. Shalala Fund for Women’s Athletics, created to help support the continued success of Miami’s women’s athletics teams. During more than a century of living, Edna Shalala witnessed a multitude of milestones achieved by women—from the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote, to Sally Ride’s historic flight aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983, making her the first American woman in space. Diminutive in size but a giant in her accomplishments, Shalala also made history of her own, becoming the first female attorney of Syrian-Lebanese descent to practice law in Cleveland, Ohio. The mother of University of Miami President and former Clinton cabinet member Donna E. Shalala, Edna Shalala passed away on Tuesday, December 2. She was 103. “A true icon” is how Stuart A. Miller, chair of the UM Board of Trustees, described Edna Shalala, saying that the entire University community is saddened by her passing. “She led a tremendous life and was supportive of so many elements of our community. Her vibrancy at age 103 was an inspiration to all who knew her.” Edna Shalala was an Ohio State Buckeye, Class of 1933. She was one of the first Arab-American graduates of the university. She majored in physical education and held down four jobs to make it through school: tennis instructor, restaurant worker, cloakroom attendant, and nanny. She was a teacher for many years. When she was 38, she went to law school while teaching and raising her daughters. When Shalala passed the bar exam in 1952, she retired from teaching and, with a fellow female law student, started her own law firm. The two ran a successful probate practice for many years, one that Shalala continued on her own after her partner died in 1968. She was the first female attorney of Syrian-Lebanese descent to practice law in Cleveland, filing petitions, writing briefs, and representing clients in court for 50 years. She retired in 2002. 17

Miami Remains Strong with GSR Success
University of Miami student-athletes, boasted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 92 percent, according to figures released by the NCAA. The rate of success indicates that Miami is above the NCAA average of 82 percent for all institutions. Miami’s has the eighth-best GSR rate among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. The figures also indicate that the Miami baseball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, rowing, women’s track and volleyball teams all registered perfect graduation success rates. “The education of our student-athletes has been and always will be our No. 1 priority at the University of Miami,” said athletic director Blake James. “Our 92 percent department graduation success rate is a testament to the hard work put in by our student-athletes with the support of our coaches and staff.” The men’s swimming and diving team’s perfect GSR score marked the 10th–consecutive year of 100 percent achievement. The Miami football and men’s basketball teams posted GSR scores of 86 and 85 percent, respectively – both of which rank above the national average. “Academic excellence is a major priority to our staff here at the University of Miami,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “We set a high standard for all of our student-athletes’ academic and athletic pursuits. We are very proud of our studentathletes’ Graduation Success Rate. We will continue to strive for excellence.” The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2004-2005 through 2007-08. More than 110,000 student-athletes are included in the most recent four classes using the GSR methodology, as compared to about 79,500 in the federal rate. The NCAA began compiling these figures with the entering freshmen class of 1995. The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.

Junior point guard Angel Rodriguez was named to the early-season Watch List for the 2014-15 Oscar Robertson Trophy for national player of the year, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced Monday. Rodriguez, who was named ACC Player of the Week earlier Monday after powering the Hurricanes to a perfect 4-0 week and the Charleston Classic championship, was one of just 24 players to make the list. Miami made its season debut in the top 20 of the two major college basketball polls thanks in large part to the play of Rodriguez, who is competing in his first season as a Hurricane. The junior is averaging 16.6 points, 5.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 steals through Miami’s flawless 5-0 start. The winners of the Oscar Robertson Trophy (recognizing player of the year), the Wayman Tisdale Award (freshman of the year) and the Henry Iba Award (coach of the year),will be announced in March and presented to the winners at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards gala at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City on April 14, 2015. Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s second-oldest player of the year award and the only one named after a former player. Creighton’s Doug McDermott was the USBWA national player of the year last season. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With more than 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.

NCAA Bylaws were established primarily to protect the health and safety of student-athletes. They were also designed to ensure that those participating were amateurs and that intercollegiate athletics was an integral part of life for a college student. While some argue whether that amateurism ideal should still exist in today’s society, current NCAA Bylaws still prevent student-athletes from profiting in any way based on their athletic abilities or athletics reputation. Thus, student-athletes would not be eligible for collegiate participation if they:
Accept any remuneration for or permit the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind. Receive remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual use of such product or service.
NCAA Bylaws also prohibit boosters, local business and corporate entities from using a student-athlete’s name, picture or likeness to promote any commercial product. A student-athlete’s name or picture may also not appear on commercial items that include:
T-Shirts Sweatshirts Playing Cards Posters
These rules currently exempt the student’s college or university from these prohibitions, so a university can currently sell items using student-athlete’s names, photos or likenesses. We ask that all University of Miami fans and supporter refrain from using any student-athlete’s name, photo or likeness in a way that could negatively affect their eligibility. Williams, Canes to Honor Edna Shalala at 5K
The University of Miami Athletics Department will host a 5-kilometer run/walk in celebration of the life of Edna C. Shalala, a longtime supporter of Hurricanes Athletics and the mother of president Donna E. Shalala. Edna, who passed away Dec. 2 at the age of 103, was honored on her 100th birthday with the creation of the Edna C. Shalala Fund for Women’s Athletics, created to help support the continued success of Miami’s women’s athletics teams. “Edna Shalala was a proud Miami Hurricane who was an inspiration to so many of us,” UM Senior VP for University Advancement and External Affairs Sergio Gonzalez said. “She loved the University and was a great supporter of female student-athletes. Please join me and the University community in honoring her by participating in the Edna C. Shalala 5K Run/Walk to support the continued excellence of UM women’s athletics. We look forward to celebrating her amazing life and her legacy through this meaningful event.” The 5K Walk/Run, set for Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. will benefit the fund. The starting line for the race is located in front of the BankUnited Center, 1245 Dauer Drive, on UM’s Coral Gables Campus. Edna made history when she became the first female attorney of Syrian-Lebanese descent to practice law in Cleveland, Ohio. Shalala was a nationally ranked tennis player in the 1930s and ’40s, winning women’s state tennis titles in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. She remained active in the sport even well into her 80s, playing three or four days a week and competing in several tournaments. In 1980, Shalala was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. When Donna Shalala became president of the University of Miami, Mother Shalala, as she was affectionately known by the UM community, spent much of her time in Coral Gables, living with her daughter at the presidential residence, attending UM functions, playing golf, and taking part in many of the institution’s activities, including those at the Herbert Wellness Center and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Former University of Miami track star and nine-time All-American Lauryn Williams will be the honorary starter for the 5K. The Olympic gold medalist offered her thoughts on Edna C. Shalala, a woman who positively affected so many people across the UM community. “I am sad to hear about the death of Momma Shalala, but continue to be inspired by the times I was in her presence,” Williams said. “My last memory is of her and my grandmother at a table looking graceful as only two who have lived such a full life could, chatting as if they had known each other for years. As the pain in my heart settles, I find comfort in the love and admiration I feel for her while reflecting on the incredible mother President Shalala had and am grateful for her impact on my life in addition to many others.” Participants in the run/walk will have the opportunity to complete the course alongside members from Miami’s women’s sport teams, coaches, spirit squads, athletic administrators, and marching band. All race participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, medal, entry into a post-race tailgate, and one complimentary season ticket to all remaining 2014-15 women’s basketball home games. In addition, those who register for the event will receive a complimentary admission (with race bib) into the Hurricanes women’s basketball game against Coppin State at the BankUnited Center at 1 p.m. For more information, visit Miami5K.com.

Former Student-Athlete Donates $1.5 Million
T. Kendall “Ken” Hunt, former football student-athlete and Founder, Chairman and CEO of VASCO Data Security International, Inc. (NASDAQ: VDSI), has made a gift of $1.5 million to endow the Ken Hunt Running Back endowed football scholarship in the University of Miami Department of Athletics. This endowment marks the largest total gift from a former student-athlete in Athletics’ history. The gift will fund a full scholarship in perpetuity to a running back on the football team. Hunt, a highly recruited running back from Southern Illinois, was the first athlete from his high school to receive a football scholarship from a major university. “As a young man, I was very fortunate to receive a scholarship to play football for the University of Miami,” Hunt said. “That scholarship meant everything to me. No one in my family had ever gone to college. This was my way forward. I used the education that I received from Miami to better myself. I guess you could say that I have been successful in business. Now, I give back to the U with an endowed scholarship for the next Ken Hunt.” His goal of playing professional football came to an abrupt end following his sophomore season when he was accidently shot above his left ankle at a sport-shooting range leaving him unable to continue playing football. The University honored Hunt’s scholarship despite the fact that he was not physically able to play on the football team for his four years at UM. This act shown by the University was something Hunt never forgot. It was through Hunt’s experience at theUniversity of Miami that he saw firsthand the power of education and athletics and he vowed to give back to the school once he was in a position to do so. “Ken exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete”, said Director of Athletics Blake James. “Ken competed at a very high level during his time at Miami and did not let adversity derail him from reaching his goals. He has gone on to be very successful professionally and has never forgotten the role Miami played in helping him get there. We are grateful to Ken for this commitment and for what it means to our entire athletic department.” The University of Miami Department of Athletics fields 17varsity sports with over 400 plus student-athletes. Over 258 studentathletes receive athletic scholarship dollars. To make a gift or for more information, please visit www.uhurricaneclub.com. Duke Johnson Wins Brian Piccolo Award
Miami running back Duke Johnson hasbeen named the recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2014 Brian Piccolo Award, ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced Thursday. The Piccolo Award has been given annually since 1970 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the “most courageous” football player in the ACC. Piccolo was the ACC Athlete of the Year in 1965 and played for the Chicago Bears before his career was cut short when he was stricken with cancer. His courageous fight against that disease was an inspiration to the Bears and the entire football community. The 2014 Piccolo Award will be presented at the ACC’s Night of Legends event, which will be held Friday (5:30 p.m.) at the Charlotte Convention Center as part of the festivities held around the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game. Johnson suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle in the fourth quarter of Miami’s game against Florida State in November of 2013. He underwent surgery two days later to repair his ankle, prematurely ending a stellar sophomore season in which he rushed for 920 yards in less than eight full games. The 5-foot-9, 206-pound Miami native returned at full speed this fall, posting six consecutive games of 100 or more rushing yards during one stretch and ranking among the nation’s rushing leaders throughout the season. He finished the regular season ranked second among ACC rushers with 1,520 yards in 12 games and moved to the top of Miami’s all-time rushing list with 3,387 career yards. “To come back from this type of injury is in and of itself a great accomplishment,” Miami head coach Al Golden said. “To come back bigger, faster, stronger and better is truly remarkable. We could not be more proud of Duke Johnson. The sacrifice and determination he exhibited during his nine month rehabilitation exemplifies why he is considered one of the game’s elite running backs and truly deserving of this award.” A semifinalist for the Doak Walker and Walter Camp Player of the Year Awards, Johnson was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week on Oct. 27, after he rushed for a career-high 249 yards on 29 carries to lead the Hurricanes to a 30-6 victory over Virginia Tech on ESPN’s Thursday Night Football. Johnson became the first Miami running back since Willis McGahee in 2002 to surpass 200 yards rushing in a game, and just the fourth player in school history overall. Johnson’s 249 yards rushing were the second-most ever in a single game by a Hurricane. Johnson becomes the fourth Miami student-athlete to receive the Brian Piccolo Award and the first since defensive end Shayon Green in 2012.

Her personal best mark of 47’6“ in shot put ranks fourth in the country, while her personal best mark of 139’5” in discus ranks 35th in the United States. Isaiah Taylor is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hurricanes after an impressive showing in 2014. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native was the runner-up at the 2014 AAU Junior Olympics Games in both the 100m and 200m. Taylor also claimed the 100m title and finished second in the 200m at the 2014 AAU Club Championships. Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem announced the University of Miami 2015 track and field schedule. The Hurricanes’ schedule is highlighted by two home meets during the outdoor season, as well as appearances at the ACC and NCAA Championships for both indoor and outdoor track and field. “The 2015 schedule is our most competitive schedule in years,” Deem said. “Our coaching staff is excited about this year’s team and believe competing against some of the top teams in the country will give us the best opportunity to reach our goals.” Miami’s indoor season kicks off Jan.17 as the Canes travel to State College, Pa., to participate in the Nittany Lion Challenge. The Hurricanes will also compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, Virginia Tech Elite Meet and the Tyson Invitational in preparation for the ACC Championships in Blacksburg, Va., from Feb. 27-28. Two weeks later, the Canes will be in Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Miami opens its outdoor season with the first of two home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from March 20-21. They will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 10-11. The final weekend of March will have the Canes competing at the Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Fla. A week later, the Canes will compete at Florida Relays. The Canes also have trips to Gainesville, Fla., and Baton Rouge, La., as they prepare for the conference and NCAA meets. Miami will return to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete at the ACC Outdoor Championships from May 14-16. A year ago, the Hurricanes had to wait over a month between the conference meet and the NCAA East Preliminary. But the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships now slot in right before NCAAs, allowing Miami’s athletes to peak heading into the most important meets of the season. “Moving the ACC Outdoor Championships to May allows us to prepare our student-athletes for the championship portion of our season,” Deem said. Two weeks after ACCs, the Canes will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla., from May 28-30. The top Miami performers will look to advance to the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13.
Miami to Hold Inaugural #Edna5K4Canes
The University of Miami Athletics Department will play host to the inaugural Edna C. Shalala 5-kilometer Run/Walk (#Edna5K4Canes) on Saturday Dec. 13, beginning at 10 a.m. on the Coral Gables campus. Participants in the run/walk will have the opportunity to complete the course alongside members from Miami’s women’s sport teams, coaches, spirit squads, athletic administrators and marching band. “This will truly be a unique opportunity for our local community to join Miami Hurricane student athletes, coaches, support staff and administrators for an exciting day that showcases women’s athletics,” said Miami women’s basketball head coach Katie Meier. “We as an athletics staff could not be more thrilled to give our fans and community an opportunity to experience our beautiful campus here at UM.” All race participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal, entry into a post-race tailgate and one complimentary season ticket to all remaining 2014-15 women’s basketball home games. In addition, those who register for the event will receive a complimentary admission (with race bib) into the Hurricanes women’s basketball game against Coppin State at the Bank United Center at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit women’s athletics at Miami and the Edna C. Shalala Foundation to honor President Donna Shalala’s mother and continue the Hurricanes’ tradition of excellence in women’s sports. Edna Shalala is a devoted athlete and is one of the biggest supporters of women’s athletics in Miami history. “Edna Shalala has been a tremendous proponent for women’s athletics both nationally and within the University of Miami athletics community,” said Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Women’s Administrator Jenn Strawley. “The continued growth of women’s athletics at Miami requires the support of our fans and community. This event and the Edna Shalala Fund for Women’s Athletics make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.” Those who wish to support this cause but are unable to run, can still support the initiative by donating to the Edna Shalala fund that supports women’s athletes. Donations will benefit women’s athletics and funds raised will go towards Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami. The 5K run/walk course will take place with a scenic run through the Coral Gables campus, pass through the athletic department facilities and showcase much of campus. Miami sponsors 10 women’s varsity sports, featuring over 200 female student-athletes. Among the 10 women’s sports, the Hurricanes have combined for seven national championships and numerous conference titles.

She picked up a pair of victories Friday, Nov. 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, both over players ranked among the ITA’s top 10 singles player. “Stephanie is discovering, through a lot of fight, some new things about her tennis that will help her reach the next step,” UM assistant coach Laura Vallverdu said. “She is seeing her mind as an asset before her tennis, which is what high-level athletics is about.” Wagner, No. 18 in the ITA singles rankings, started her day Friday with an impressive showing against Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA. Wagner took match in straight sets over Van Nguyen, ranked seventh by the ITA and the second seed in the draw. The Amberg, Germany native won 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Wagner then played her next Singles Main Draw match in the afternoon and put forth another stellar effort, taking down California’s Lynn Chi, the ITA’s No. 8 ranked singles player, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Canes Win Thanksgiving Tournament Title After opening Friday’s semifinal game with a 10-0 run, the University of Miami began the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament championship with an 8-0 run Saturday and never looked back. Redshirt senior forward Jassany Williams posted a double-double and the Hurricanes used a balanced scoring attack along with their usual stellar defense to take down Tulsa 69-57 and win the tournament. “This was a very hard fought basketball game and we had a lot of respect for Tulsa,” UM head coach Katie Meier said. “They returned I think almost every player from their team last year, so they were really experienced, savvy. They can hurt you a lot of ways and they put up 87 points the night before. So, this defensive effort by us, holding them to 57—our goal was to keep them under 60— with the talent that they have, we’re really pleased.” Miami (4-2) never trailed at any point in either of its games in the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament and the only time either contest was tied was before either team scored. Jassany Williams and senior forward Necole Sterling both scored eight points in the first half alone, topping their prior highs for a full game this season. Sophomore guard Adrienne Motley had nine points at the break to help Miami to a 41-30 advantage. The Hurricanes also dominated on the glass before the intermission, out-rebounding Tulsa (3-3) by a margin of 28-12. Miami had as many offensive rebounds as the Golden Hurricane had total.

Tulsa opened the second half on a 12-4 run to close to within three with 14:57 to go, but Miami immediately responded with a run of its own. Sophomore guard Jessica Thomas hit a three-pointer, senior guard Suriya McGuire scored on a finger roll and Jassany Williams had a block that led to a transition bucket at the other end for redshirt junior Michelle Woods. Just like that Miami’s lead was up to 10, 52-42, with 12:29 remaining. “Suriya McGuire did not practice this morning, did not participate in shootaround with flu-like symptoms and I was not sure until the game whether or not she would play,” Meier said of one of the key cogs in the run. “So, I thought her energy—when the game was on the line, I think Ray Ray just came up huge. Just extra effort plays, steals and tips and just stuff we needed from her.” Adrienne Motley tied for a game-high with 17 points and pulled down five rebounds. The Newport News, Va. native was named the tournament MVP after averaging 16.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and shooting 13-22 (59.1 percent) while committing just two turnovers in 48 minutes. “She’s just so efficient,” Meier said of the standout sophomore. “She’s blessed to have Jessica Thomas and Michelle Woods so she doesn’t play 30 minutes of point guard the whole game and she can free herself up a little bit and get a blow while still in the game. I think Jessica and Chelley have done such a great job with threatening the rim that it frees up Motley a lot. So, it’s a nice little combination for our us and I’m really proud of our guards this whole tournament, they did a real nice job.” DECEMBER 5, 2014

Jassany Williams set season highs in points (12), rebounds (12) and minutes (30). The double-double was also her first of the season and second as a Hurricane. Suriya McGuire, Jessica Thomas and Necole Sterling all scored 10 points in the win. “We need it and I’m so proud of her,” Meier said of Williams’ play. “She’s been great, she’s so coachable and been really kind of frustrated and she needed a game like this. She got it done on the defensive end to start and then late in the game we went straight to her. We called three or four plays for her and she came through on every single one of them.” Junior guard Ashley Clark led Tulsa with 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Kelsey Grovey scored 11 and senior forward Mariah Turner had 10.

Wilfredo Gonzalez Wins Silver at CAC 2014 University of Miami senior tennis player Wilfredo Gonzalez won silver in the team event while representing his home country of Guatemala in the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games at the Las Palmas Racquet Club from Nov. 24-30 in Veracruz, Mexico. “It was a great level tournament where the best tennis players from all the countries from Central America, Caribbean, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela competed,” said Gonzalez. “I am extremely happy to have played the best doubles I have ever played in my life. and excited to continue working, now that I realize that I am so close to players with rankings that high in the professional tour. I know that with hard work and strong fundamentals, I can go back to the games in four years (Colombia 2018), and accomplish even better results.” In the team quarterfinals Guatemala defeated the host nation of Mexico with a final score of 2-1. “In first round, we played against the local team, Mexico,” said Gonzalez. “Because of the rankings and good trajectory of the Mexican players, few people believed an upset from Guatemala was possible.” Gonzalez faced ITF No. 821 Lucas Gomez and dominated in the first set, but ultimately fell in a tough match, 6-1, 0-6, 11-9. Gonzalez then teamed up with Christopher Díaz in doubles action of the team event to defeat the No. 36 ranked team of No. 38 Santiago Gonzalez and No. 120 Cesar Ramirez in a tightly contested match, 7-5, 7-6, the first upset of the team event competition. In the semifinals, Gonzalez then routed his opponent Haydn Lewis from Barbados 6-1, 6-1, leading Guatemala to a final 2-1 victory over Barbados.

Gonzalez and Diaz then clinched their place in the finals defeating Haydn Lewis and Darian King in a dominant performance, 6-2, 6-0, the second upset of the event. In the finals, Gonzalez and his teammates then fell to Colombia, 2-0, ending the string of upsets by the Guatemalan team. Gonzalez was pegged against highly ranked ITF No. 623 Juan Carlos Spir. Gonzalez pushed Spir to a tiebreak in the first set, but fell in straight-sets, 7-6, 6-1. “Even though we were sad that we couldn’t win the gold medal, we were extremely happy for beating two teams that on paper were better than us,” said Gonzalez. “And not only that, but it was the first tennis medal in this games since 1990, which is something big what we accomplished.” In the singles competition, Gonzalez opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dominic Pagon from Jamaica. In the second round, he faced No. 312 Darian King from Barbados, who was the No. 5 seed in the tournament. Gonzalez battled in both sets, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-4 to King. In doubles competition, Gonzalez teamed up with Stefan Gonzalez and faced off against Peter Bertran and Jose Hernandez from the Dominican Republic. The Gonzalez and Gonzalez pair challenged in the first set but fell in straight sets to the Dominican duo in first round action, 6-3. 6-2. The 2014 edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games was the first time the team event was included in the tennis competition. In the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games, the best players from each Central American and Caribbean countries competed against each other for individual and team medals.

@CanesVB vs. UCF in NCAA Tourney The University of Miami volleyball team opens its stay at the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Tournament Friday against UCF. The Hurricanes (21-8, 14-4 ACC) earned one of the 64 spots in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and will be one of four teams participating in the Gainesville portion of the Ames Regional, joining No. 8 Florida, UCF and Alabama State. “I’m extremely excited for this group with so many new players,” head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said following the team’s selection. “To see where we started off and the improvement we made with this in mind; our goal was always to make the tournament and hopefully make a run in the tournament. It’s exciting to see that happening. I felt really good coming into this week and feel we deserve to be in the tournament. I am extremely happy for the players, staff and the university.” Miami, who finished tied for third in the ACC, will face UCF at 4:30 p.m. Friday in their first round match of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The winner of that match advances to face the winner of No. 8 Florida and Alabama State. The Canes will be led by 2014 ACC Player of the Year Savanah Leaf, 2014 First Team All-ACC selection Emani Sims and 2014 ACC Freshman of the Year Haley Templeton. Leaf was an absolute force all season en route to becoming the second ACC Player of the Year in UM History, joining Lane Carico (2011). The San Anselmo Calif., native was a three-time ACC Player of the Week selection and finished the regular season leading the ACC and ranking 15th in the country with 4.56 kills/set. A First Team All-ACC selection, she is the team leader in kills (451), kills/set (4.56) and points (5.24), while ranking second in attack percentage (.302), service aces (25) and digs (250), and third in blocks (77). Sims was a leader on and off the court for Miami. The senior captain led Miami with a .394 attack percentage that ranked third in the ACC and 23rd in the country. Her 130 blocks are a team-best, while she finished second on the team in points (3.08) and fourth in kills (218) and service aces (16). Preseason-All ACC honoree, Sims earned her third consecutive First Team All-ACC selection. Templeton had a fantastic freshman campaign, earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors five times during the 2014 season. The Alpharetta, Ga., native eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark during Miami’s 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech a week ago, recording the 10th 1,000-assist season since the program returned in 2001. The gifted setter finished the regular season ranked second in the ACC with 11.02 assists/set. She finished the year with 1,047 assists and led the Hurricanes with 27 service aces. She is the second Cane to win ACC Freshman of the Year, joining Carico (2008). Junior Taylor Scott and sophomore Kelsie Groot are versatile players who contribute in a variety of ways for the Hurricanes. Scott ranks second on the team in kills (232) and third in digs (239), while Groot leads the Canes with 259 digs and ranks second in service aces (25) and third in kills (223). Freshmen Sakile Simmons and Sylvia Hernandez complete Miami’s projected starters and the newcomers bring different things to the floor. Simmons is an active blocker from the middle, recording 106 blocks on the season, while Hernandez had been a strong player in Miami’s back row since taking over as the starting defensive specialist in late October. Miami also features a talented bench that includes freshmen Brooke McDermott and Michele Marenus, as well as senior Blair Fuentez and juniors Kalysta White and Caitilin Donahoe. The quintet of reserves gives Gandara a variety of options against the Knights. The Hurricanes are part of a 16-team bracket that features No. 1 overall seed Stanford, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Illinois and No. 16 Kansas. Miami has now earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year under Gandara, the sixth consecutive year and the seventh time in program history. “From my experience, I think one of the keys to doing well is balance,” Gandara said. “We need to balance our excitement because while we are deserving of a spot in the tournament, we still have business to take care of.”
