FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Hurricanes Fans, As the calendar turns to December, our winter sport seasons are in full swing following an exciting fall campaign at The U. Our football team closed out the month of November with four straight ACC wins to finish with an 8-4 record. This is the first time our Hurricanes have finished out the year with four consecutive wins since 2002. I can’t say enough great things about the job head coach Mark Richt and his staff have done in their first season at The U. But the season is not quite over yet. I’m pleased to announce that Miami has accepted a bid to the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando for what promises to be a fantastic bowl matchup against West Virginia. We’re excited to have a bowl experience so close to home and look forward to seeing all of you on December 28. Our football program has a bright future and with the continued support of our donors, alumni and students there is no limit to what we can achieve both on and off the field. The bowl game will also be the final appearance on the field for our 18 football seniors, who have given so much of their time and energy to our program. Please join me in congratulating these outstanding representatives of our program. They will always be welcome back here at The U. I also would like to congratulate the 10 football student-athletes who were selected to the 2016 ACC All-Conference team. Our men’s and women’s basketball programs have jumped out to great starts so far this season, as both teams have combined for a 13-3 record. The Hurricane women’s team is ranked 16th in the country with a 7-1 record that includes a road win over Top-10 ranked Ohio State. Meanwhile, our men’s team is 6-2 with two wins over Power Five schools. I truly believe that we have two of the best basketball coaches in the country in Jim Larrañaga and Katie Meier. They do such a wonderful job with our student-athletes and I look forward to another exciting year from both teams. We hope to see all of you cheering on the Canes at the newly named Watsco Center throughout the season. I would like to congratulate junior Khaila Prather from the women’s basketball team and Davon Reed from the men’s basketball team as both were nominated for the 2017 Allstate Good Works Team. The Allstate Good Works Team recognizes the commitment of student-athletes’ work in the community and I am thrilled that we have two players that embody the true spirit of a student-athlete within our men’s and women’s basketball programs. I also would like to congratulate senior Adrienne Motley from the women’s basketball team for being one of 50 players named to the 2017 Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Preseason Watch List. The Naismith Trophy is awarded to the top player in college basketball and she is certainly a deserving candidate. Finally, back on September 23rd, I was honored to join President Frenk and our UM family as we announced the Soffer Family’s $14 million commitment towards the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility. This project continues to generate momentum and I am thrilled to announce that we have raised more than $29 million. But we still need your support to reach our goal of $34 million. Groundbreaking will occur as soon as all funds have been committed. For more information on how to make a gift in support of this project, visit hurricanesfootballfacility.com or call the Hurricane Club at (305) 284-6699. Naming opportunities located within the facility are still available. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine as we reflect on the latest Hurricanes news and look ahead to another exciting month. For the latest information on each of our 16 varsity sports, please be sure to visit HurricaneSports.com or follow us on Twitter @MiamiHurricanes. From all of us at Miami Athletics, we wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season. Go Canes! Blake James

FOOTBALL SENIOR DAY HIGHLIGHTS | 11.26.16

Dewan Huell

Hometown Hurricane By Camron Ghorbi - Dec. 1, 2106

Let it be known – from Tobacco Road to the pastures of Kentucky, upstate New York all the way to Lawrence, Kan., - that on Dec. 3, 2016, under lights brighter than the south Florida sun, the Magic City will showcase its own rising power in the college basketball landscape. It’s not the University of Miami’s first game of the season – it’s actually the eighth (ninth, counting the exhibition against nearby Division II power Barry). No, Miami isn’t (yet) ranked in the top 25 of either the Associated Press or Coaches Poll. And, to answer the last question, none of the aforementioned “traditional powerhouses” or “blue blood programs” is rolling into town. Fresh off their third straight win in the ACC / Big Ten Challenge, the Hurricanes will battle NCAA Tournament regular Wofford in the back end of a doubleheader at the AmericanAirlines Arena as part of the HoopHall Miami Invitational, organized by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In last year’s inaugural event, Kentucky, Ohio State and Memphis all took part. This year? A program whose maturation under Jim Larrañaga from impressive infancy – including two Sweet 16 appearances, a NIT Championship runner-up finish and ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships – to likely yearin contender is best embodied by one player alone: 6-foot-11 freshman Dewan Huell. Who? duh-WAN. HUE-uhl. If you don’t know the name yet, you might want to start practicing. Huell is a five-star basketball player from Dade County, offers in hand from every “major” program in the country, who chose the hometown Hurricanes over any other. His mother and father attended local football powerhouse Miami Central, but he opted for the hardwood at Miami Norland, where he guided the Vikings to three state championships.

Huell (No. 28) is one of six ESPN Top 100 players to sign with Miami since 2007, including classmate Bruce Brown, who was ranked No. 26. Three more are in next year’s signing class, who will join sophomores Huell and Brown in 2017, when Miami will put together one of its most talented groups, albeit on paper, in program history. Put simply, a five-star recruit like Huell’s decision to attend Miami is becoming the norm. Welcome to the new college basketball scene, where Larrañaga – or “Coach L,” as fans, players and staff call him – has planted his flag in Coral Gables. “Back in the day, UM wasn’t, I guess, a great basketball school,” Huell said. “A lot of kids have their dream schools. For me, I’ve been in Miami my whole life. I’m a hometown guy – I’m a fan of the Dolphins, the Heat and the Marlins. “I thought I would stay here too and build my legacy.” Huell made his first collegiate start in Wednesday’s game against Rutgers at the Watsco Center and sparked Miami to a 73-61 win. He poured in 14 points – one shy of his career high – and added seven rebounds, showcasing the athleticism that earned him a five-star ranking from every scouting service. “If he can discipline himself to shoot his jump-hook all the time, he could really be a heck of a scorer,” Larrañaga said. “He shot it tonight beautifully. I was very impressed with Dewan’s athletic, acrobatic ability to score near the rim.” Twelve of those 14 points came in a second half that helped Miami pull away and snap a two-game losing skid. “Those dunks [in the second half], they’re not easy plays,” Larrañaga said. “The post feed we did to him, where he didn’t take a dribble, he just turned and kind of squeezed it in - his first basket of the second half - that helped him get going.” Huell credits Larrañaga for his development as a student and athlete. “He’s one of the greatest coaches I’ve had. Coach L helps me on and off the court. If I have any problems, he’ll make sure I solve them,” Huell said. “If I’m going through any situation, he helps me throughout it.”

While many Miami-born hoopers and “blue chip” recruits before him have spent their college careers elsewhere, Huell will be wearing the orange and green proudly Saturday, playing in front of the city whose famous “305” area code is permanently emblazoned on his right tricep. He got the tattoo early on in his freshman year at Miami, and said that he knows the city’s basketball talent is overshadowed by the local high school football scene. That might change Saturday, if the Rutgers game is to be taken as a harbinger, when Huell takes the floor on his hometown court wearing his hometown university’s famous colors and playing in front of his hometown crowd. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s amazing playing on the Heat’s court,” said Huell, who took part in the high school version of the HoopHall Invitational last season at Norland. “Now, having a bigger supporting staff, fans…it should be pretty amazing to walk out of the tunnel. It’s special.”

More than anything, he says, he loves playing in front of his family and friends who will be in attendance at the AmericanAirlines Arena, and who are at every home game at the Watsco Center.

“Being from here, that’s what really makes it great,” He even predicts how he thinks the PA announcer’s voice Huell said. will sound when his name is called. “Everyone in the crowd says, ‘Yeah, that’s my boy,’ or, “The freshman…From Miami, Florida…Number 20… ‘Yeah, that’s my son,’ or, ‘Yeah, that’s my cousin.’ Dew-aannnn Huuu-ell!” he says softly, and with a smile. He usually lets his play do the talking. Playing here in Miami, it really is a special thing.”

Miami to Take on West Virginia in the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl The University of Miami football team announced Sunday that it has accepted a bid to the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl and will take on West Virginia. The game is set for Dec. 28 and will be aired live at 5:30 p.m. EST on ESPN inside Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Miami’s appearance in the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl will mark the 40th time in school history the Hurricanes have competed in a bowl game. The Hurricanes own a 19-20 overall record in 39 previous bowl games. Miami’s appearance in the Russell Athletic Bowl marks the fourth consecutive season in which Miami has competed in the postseason. Miami’s matchup with the Mountaineers in the Russell Athletic Bowl will mark the 20th all-time meeting between the former conference rivals and the first matchup in a bowl game. Miami leads the all-time series 16-3. Both schools played every year from 1991 to 2003 while members of the BIG EAST Conference. “I could not be more excited for our program to represent the ACC at the Russell Athletic Bowl,” said Miami Athletics Director Blake James. “The staff at the Russell Athletic Bowl is truly committed to putting on a first-class event. The city of Orlando is a familiar bowl destination for our program and I know it is a location that our student-athletes, coaches, fans, alumni and donors will thoroughly enjoy.” The Hurricanes will make their third bowl appearance in Orlando since 2009. Miami’s first trip to Orlando for a bowl came in 2009 when it took on Wisconsin. The Hurricanes’ last visit to Orlando came in 2013 where they took on Louisville. “The Russell Athletic Bowl will be an outstanding opportunity for our team,” said Miami head coach Mark Richt. “Orlando is a fantastic city, has a great stadium and will provide a tremendous challenge to compete against a quality opponent like West Virigina. It’s also a great spot for our fans to enjoy their bowl experience. We are looking forward to our week in Orlando.” The Hurricanes accepted the bowl invitation after winning their final four games en route to an 8-4 regular season finish. Miami will be searching for its first bowl win since its 21-20 victory over Nevada in the 2006 MPC Computers Bowl in Boise, Idaho. Freshman Bruce Brown Records Miami’s Second Triple Double Bruce Brown already is enjoying memorable performances nine games into his collegiate career. Days after being named ACC Freshman of the Week, Brown finished with a triple-double to lead Miami to an 82-46 win over South Carolina State Tuesday night. The triple double was Miami’s first since 2004 and second overall. Brown scored 11 points and finished with 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Hurricanes. The performance capped an emotional day for the guard, whose uncle, Edward Dillard, died earlier Tuesday. “The game was for him,” Brown said. “I played every possession like if it was my last.” Brown had nine rebounds in the first half and reached double figures 7:42 into the second half. But Brown didn’t reach double digit scoring until his dunk with 4:34 remaining. His final assist resulted in D.J. Vasiljevic’s 3-pointer with 2:59 left that gave Miami its largest lead at 81-42. Midway through the second half, Brown pleaded for additional playing time with Miami coach Jim Larranaga in his attempts to reach the coveted mark. Miami’s last triple-double came when Anthony King scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked 13 shots against Florida Atlantic on November 29, 2004. “I went to coach L, please don’t take me out until I get three more assists and one more point,” Brown said. “I think the greatest thing about Bruce is his personality, his enthusiasm, his smile and energy that he brings to practice every day and he brings to the court every game,” Larranaga said. “He’s such a hard worker.” The Hurricanes (7-2) opened the game with an 18-0 run in the first 6:15. Davon Reed and Ja’Quan Newton scored four points each during Miami’s early surge. The Bulldogs (2-6) missed their first 10 shots until Tashombe Riley’s jumper broke the scoring drought with 13:27 remaining in the first half. “It speaks to the level of their athleticism and guys finishing plays,” Bulldogs coach Murray Garvin. “I don’t think we gave a lot of resistance.” Vasiljevic scored a team-high 17 points for the Hurricanes. All of the Vasiljevic’s field goals were 3-pointers as he shot 5-of-11 from behind the arc. Reed and Newton were Miami’s other double figure scorers with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Reed shot 6-of-8 from the field. Anthony Lawrence’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Hurricanes a 42-14 lead at halftime.

#ProCanes Report - 11/28/16 The #ProCanes Report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most... what the former University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. As if there was any doubt about which school rightfully claims the title of “#TightEndU,” Hurricanes across the NFL put that argument to rest Sunday. Clive Walford’s late touchdown helped the Raiders to a win, Jimmy Graham led all Seahawks in receiving yardage to build on a dominant season, and Greg Olsen had another strong outing for the Panthers. Read on for more from across the NFL. TOP PERFORMERS Clive Walford (Oakland Raiders) – three catches, 43 yards, one touchdown Second-year tight end Clive Walford had one of his better performances of the season in Sunday’s thrilling 35-32 win over Carolina. Walford’s clutch touchdown reception in the back of the endzone with less than nine minutes remaining set up the game-tying two-point conversion, with the Raiders going on to win on a late field goal. The touchdown was the second of the season and fifth career score for Walford, whose Raiders remain in first place in the AFC West. Denzel Perryman (San Diego Chargers) – 10 tackles In a much needed win over the Houston Texans, San Diego got a boost in the form of second-year linebacker Denzel Perryman, who returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous two games with an injury. Perryman totaled 10 tackles – his second double-digit tackle performance of the season and fourth of his career – in the Chargers’ 21-13 victory over fellow #ProCanes Lamar Miller and Vince Wilfork. He has 43 tackles in eight games this season. Jimmy Graham (Seattle Seahawks) – six catches, 67 yards Little went right for Seattle in a 14-5 loss to Tampa Bay Sunday, but Jimmy Graham had another strong outing for the Seahawks. The seventh-year tight end and second-year Seahawk hauled in six passes totaling 67 yards, pushing his franchise-record tight-end yardage total to 706 in 11 games. Graham is looking for his first 1,000-yard season since 2013, when he totaled 1,215 in his second-to-last season with the Saints. He moved past 6,000 career receiving yards in Sunday’s loss. Olivier Vernon (New York Giants) – four tackles, 1.5 sacks Make it four straight games with a sack for defensive end Olivier Vernon, who helped lead the New York Giants to a 27-13 win over Cleveland Sunday. Vernon, who totaled four tackles and 1.5 sacks in his team’s victory, has 5.5 sacks on the season and has now totaled 45 tackles, which ranks among the top 10 for defensive linemen this year. Sunday’s performance marked the third time in his career he has had a sack in four straight games, and he now has 34.5 sacks to his name in just over four seasons. AROUND THE LEAGUE Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) had four catches totaling 45 yards in a matchup with Oakland…Lamar Miller (Houston Texans) had 57 rushing yards and added three receptions totaling 18 yards against San Diego…Frank Gore (Indianapolis Colts) carried 15 times against Pittsburgh…Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars) had a 12-yard touchdown reception against Buffalo...Erik Swoope (Indianapolis Colts) had a 35-yard reception against the Steelers…Travis Benjamin (San Diego Chargers) had one eightyard reception against Houston…Sean Spence (Tennessee Titans) had one tackle in a win over Chicago…Phillip Dorsett (Indianapolis Colts) had three catches totaling 31 yards against Pittsburgh…Duke Johnson Jr. (Cleveland Browns) had five rushes and three receptions and totaled 40 all-purpose yards against the New York Giants.

NCAA Bylaws were established primarily to protect the health and safety of student-athletes. They were also designed to ensure that those participating are amateurs and that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of life for a college student. While some argue whether that amateurism ideal should still exist in today’s society, current NCAA Bylaws still prevent student-athletes from profiting in any way based on their athletic abilities or athletics reputation. Thus, student-athletes would not be eligible for collegiate participation if they: • •

Accept any remuneration for or permit the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind. Receive remuneration for endorsing a commercial product or service through the individual use of such product or service.

NCAA Bylaws also prohibit boosters, local business and corporate entities from using a student-athlete’s name, picture or likeness to promote any commercial product. A student-athlete’s name or picture may also not appear on commercial items that include: • • • •

T-Shirts Sweatshirts Playing Cards Posters

These rules currently exempt the student’s college or university from these prohibitions, so a university can currently sell items using student-athlete’s names, photos or likenesses. SHERRY LUBIN NAPLES, FLA. | MAJOR: NURSING I decided to attend the University of Miami because I felt that it was the right fit for me. I loved the atmosphere, the people, and school as a whole. Miami has a great nursing program, which is my major, and it’s not too far from home. The best aspect of being a part of Miami’s track and field team has been spending time with my teammates and getting to know them. They have helped me with my biggest challenge since coming to college and that is coming to a new place. I had to meet new people and become comfortable in a different environment and my teammates and coaches helped with that.

My goals for this season are to improve from high school and to continue bettering myself. I was a state champion in high school, but this is a new level and everyone is going to be really good once we start competing in the spring. Training with my teammates has been good and I am excited to finally get to compete for the Hurricanes. When I prepare for a meet, I make sure to stay hydrated for that week, try to have good practices, and to eat healthy. I also make sure I take care of my school work and just relax. My idea of relaxing is sleeping, reading a good book, or hanging out with my friends and family. I’m humble, because I appreciate everything in my life. I’m hard working, because I strive to achieve things. Also, I’m patient, because all good things come to those who wait.

Deem’s Hurricanes Sign Five to NLIs Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem is excited to announce the five newest members of the Hurricanes track and field family. The Canes welcome fall signees Debbie Ajagbe, Kayla Johnson, Hasani Knight, Symone Mason and Amuru Patterson. Ajagbe, Johnson, Mason and Patterson will bolster a talented women’s team, while Knight will join a rising men’s roster. All five signees will be freshmen in the fall of 2017. “We had some specific areas we needed to address in this signing period and we definitely succeeded,” Deem said. “Amuru, Kayla and Symone bring tremendous versatility to our sprints group. Debbie is an excellent student-athlete and has great athleticism and Hasani fills a big need for the men’s team in the horizontal jumps.” Ajagbe is a Miami native that chose to continue her academic and athletic career with the hometown Hurricanes. Name: Erika Voyzey Year in School: Freshman Major: Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering Hometown: Warriors Mark, Pa. 1.

Why did you decide to attend the University of Miami?

“The U offered me the best of both worlds when it came to academics and athletics. I never wanted to sacrifice one for the other. Miami has the academic standards and the athletic standards that I was looking for.” 2. What is the best aspect of being part of Miami’s Track & Field team so far? “Just being a part of the team is one of the best aspects. I wake up knowing that I can live my dream of being a student-athlete, and I’m extremely grateful.” 3.

What are some of your goals for the season?

“My goal is to be the best that I can be and give everything I have. I have some high hopes for the upcoming season, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.” 4. What do you feel was the biggest challenge you came across since your arrival? “The biggest challenge I have is trying to get enough sleep. When you’re in a difficult major, you have no free time, and it’s a constant grind. They key is finding the right balance.” 5. What is the biggest difference between previous training and how it is now at the University of Miami? “Back home, we’d train five days out of the seven in a week, but it definitely wasn’t as intense. There’s a lot more running and technique building.” 6.

What do you do to prepare right before a meet?

“I try to eat a specific meal for dinner the night before, and when I warm-up, I usually jam to my track playlist. There’s a very specific process, and it’s too complicated to get into.” 7.

What do you do away from practice and studying to relax?

“Nothing… yet. Honestly, I just don’t have time to take it easy. I always have class, practice, or homework/studying.” 8.

Three words to describe you and why?

“People say I’m determined, friendly, and positive. I guess I really love life, so that’s why.”

Lachowecki has tallied 11 goals and 25 points this season, figures that are tied for fourth and tied for sixth, respectively, on Miami’s singleseason lists. The Evansville, Ind., native is the lone Hurricane with multiple double-digit goal seasons and ranks third all-time at Miami in goals (24) and fourth in points (54). Fisher, a freshman forward, is the eighth player in Miami history to receive a conference all-freshman team distinction. She is one of three to do so since the Hurricanes joined the ACC, along with Steinbruch (2007) and Jasmine Paterson (2010). “Kristina has had a very good freshman season, stepping up to start every game and scoring some great goals for us,” Monroe said. “I am excited to see how she grows in our program.” Hailing from nearby Jupiter, Fla., Fisher enrolled at Miami in the spring of 2016 and began her career in style in the fall, earning NSCAA College Player of the Week honors after her first two matches, as she totaled three goals and three assists. Fisher leads Miami in assists (six), is tied for first in game-winning goals (three), places second in points (20) and is tied for second on the team in goals (seven). Those numbers rank tied for sixth, tied for eighth, tied for fifth and tied for No. 10 in the ACC. This is the second time the Hurricanes have had two players garner ACC postseason distinctions in the same season, joining 2007. Steinbruch was a First Team All-ACC pick and an ACC All-Freshman Team honoree, while Lauren Singer garnered Second Team All-ACC recognition. Olga Strantzali Named First Team All-ACC Junior was one of the top players in the country, leading ACC in kills, aces and points University of Miami outside hitter Olga Strantzali was named to the 2016 All-ACC Volleyball First Team, as announced by the conference office on Nov. 28. The junior was one of 14 players named to the 2016 all-conference first team as determined by a vote by the 15 ACC volleyball head coaches. The selection marks the second All-ACC honor of her career. “This makes me really happy and excited for next year,” Strantzali said. “I worked really hard this past year and my work paid off, but I wouldn’t have achieved anything without my teammates and coaches.” Strantzali entered the season as a Preseason All-ACC selection and she lived up to her billing. The Pylaia, Thessaloniki, Greece, native was arguably the top player in the ACC in 2016, leading the conference in kills per set, service aces per set and points per set. The star outside hitter’s numbers also proved she was one of the best players in the entire country, ranking seventh in Division I with 4.76 kills per set and ninth with 5.37 points per set. Her 0.39 service aces per set sit 50th among Division I players. Among players from Power 5 conferences, Strantzali ranks third in kills per set and points per set and sixth in aces per set. She is the only player from the ACC to rank in the top 30 in Division I in kills per set and points per set and the only ACC player in the top 50 in service aces per set. “You couldn’t understate how consistently excellent Olga was this season,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. “Through a myriad of hurdles, she was good day after day. We’re so proud to be a part of her success and to have her be a huge part of ours. We’re thrilled to have another season with her and are pretty confident that, considering her work ethic and character, she’ll be even better this time next year.” A standout player during her two seasons at Miami, Strantzali finished the season with 586 kills which ranks sixth in all of Division I. Her 586 kills are second-most in a single season in Hurricanes history and are 79 more than the second-highest total among ACC players. Strantzali recorded 15 or more kills in 25 of Miami’s 32 matches in 2016 and eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark for her collegiate career, sitting at 1,145 kills over three seasons. She also set a new career-high with 30 kills in a five-set win at Louisville that is tied for second-most in a single match in program history. Known for her powerful serve, Strantzali wrapped the 2016 season with an ACC-best 48 service aces, ranking 17th among NCAA Division I players and is tied for third among players from Power 5 conferences. She recorded a season-high five service aces in three matches during the 2016 campaign. Strantzali received two all-tournament honors for her outstanding performances during non-conference play. She was selected to the 2016 Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team and the 2016 Delaware Invitational AllTournament Team.

FAU vs. Miami - Friday, Dec. 16 THE MATCHUP BETWEEN MIAMI AND FAU Miami is 21-1 all-time against FAU and have never lost to the Owls in Coral Gables. In 2004, Miami’s Anthony King recorded the school’s first triple double with 11 points, 13 blocks and 10 rebounds. He set a school record with the 13 blocks in one game. That is only three blocks behind the NCAA Division I record of 16, which is held by Mickell Gladness formerly of Alabama A&M. In that same game in 2004, Robert Hite scored 38 points on 11 made field goals in the second half of the Hurricanes 84-68 victory. The 11 made field goals in one half is the most by a Miami player (since 2004-05). In the 22 meetings with FAU, Miami has scored at least 80 points in 12 of those games. Coach L is 2-0 against FAU in his head coaching career, but this will be his first head-to-head matchup with Owls head coach Michael Curry. MILESTONES FOR THE CANES 600 Victories - Coach Larrañaga is just five wins shy of 600 career victories. With 600 wins, he will be one of five ACC coaches with 600 victories, and the other four men are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. 1,000 Games - Coach Larrañaga opened the 2016-17 season just 21 shy of 1,000 career games coached. Miami’s 21st game of the season is vs. Florida State on Feb. 1. Davon Reed has been nominated for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Allstate Insurance Company announced Wednesday. Reed serves as a leader on the basketball court and also in the Coral Gables community. For three years he has served as an elementary school pen pal, and has volunteered in the community at the Miami Rescue Mission Homeless Shelter. In the summer, Reed gives back to local youth by working as a counselor at the Jim Larrañaga Basketball Camp.

The University of Miami will join seven other schools in the 2017 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, which will be played Friday, Saturday and Monday, Dec. 22, 23 and 25, 2017 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. The field for the eighth annual event also includes Akron, Davidson, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, USC, Utah State and tournament host school Hawai‘i. The Hurricanes last played in the Diamond Head Classic in 2012-13, when Miami went 1-2 in the event, but then went on to play in the NCAA Sweet 16 at the end of the year.

DAVON REED SPORTS ADMINISTRATION | EWING, N.J. My family is very important to me. They are my motivation. They are who I do this for every day. My mother and father have always pushed me to play basketball and pushed me to be dedicated to the sport. They have also pushed me hard in the classroom. They definitely pushed me to balance both in my life. My Dad always wanted to work out and I think that contributed to my work ethic now. I always wanted to be in the gym and try to get better. My mother and father have always been there for me, not just basketball but also every element in life. They definitely push me to be a positive, strong young man and to have good goals, and I love them for that. The biggest thing that brought me to Miami is Coach L. He is an amazing guy, and an amazing father figure. You name it, he is always there for the players, and he looks out for everybody. He cares for

everybody, individually and collectively. He knows a lot about the game. He was the selling factor for me. I can make an impact. Whatever way it needs to be done, I am willing to do it. I am not saying I will come out and score 15 points per game, but whether it is points, energy or defense, I will be able to provide some type of immediate impact to this team. I am motivated to work hard. First and foremost I pray about it every day. I am a very religious person, so I pray that God gives me the strength to carry on throughout the day. Then I just say I have to do it. It is not going to get done by itself. I go out there and try to get it done every day and try to bring the best attitude towards it, whether it be basketball or school work or anything. The best part of my game is my motor. I will go out and give it my all in every play of the game. I will bring the high edge on defense and offense. I’d like to say that I have the highest level of energy on the team. I always bring it, every practice, on both ends.

I think the upperclassmen are prepared; they know what to expect,” Yaroshuk-Tews said of ACC play. “I think that there will be a little bit of a learning curve and a little bit of a transition for the kids on our teams who have not played that [type of] quality tennis every weekend for an entire season, but that’s our job, to get them prepared. It’s fun to play in one of the toughest conferences in the country. It only makes us better.” The ACC Championship will take place April 26-30 in Rome, Ga., with the NCAA Team Championship opening May 12-14 at campus sites. Miami assistant Claire Frenkel is charged with coaching the novices and she was happy with how they responded in their first official racing action. “They were very explosive in their first few strokes and really set the tone for the pieces,” Frenkel said. “We have a lot of room for growth, but today was definitely a great experience for them.” The scrimmage was the fourth and final event of the Hurricanes’ 2016 fall schedule. Collins Ranked Top Prosect in White Sox Organization In its annual rankings of the top players in each minor league system, Baseball America rated catcher Zack Collins as the No. 1 prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization entering 2017. After a standout three-year career with the Hurricanes, Collins was selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft in June. In his first professional season spanning 36 games, he batted .258 at Winston-Salem (Class A Advanced) with six home runs, seven doubles, 18 RBI and a .418 on-base percentage. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, who earned first-team All-America honors from Baseball America, D1Baseball, NCBWA, Perfect Game and Rawlings his junior year at Miami, delivered a dominant final collegiate season swinging the bat and behind the plate in 2016. He was named Baseball America’s National Freshman of the Year and pulled in ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2014. “While Collins’ calling card will always be his offense, his defensive progress was exceptional in his junior year, and he particularly encouraged evaluators with his soft hands,” Baseball America wrote in its evaluation of Collins. “He shows the ability to set a low target and keep his glove hand still, and he’s shown the aptitude to understand umpires’ strike zones and adjust his framing technique in response. “Regardless of what kind of defensive player he ends up being, Collins’ offense will play. He has a rare combination of strength and bat speed, giving him plus power...Collins has a patient approach at the plate, with elite strike-zone awareness and an uncanny idea of which pitches he can do damage with. He has a rhythmic swing, with a bat tip forward as he loads his hands.” Collins batted .363 for the year, leading Miami with 16 home runs and 59 RBI to go along with a nation-leading total of 78 walks. He reached base at a .544 clip, the second-highest in the country, and recorded a team-high .668 slugging percentage. He became the first ever Hurricane recipient of the Johnny Bench Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate catcher, and was named to the AllACC First Team for the second consecutive season.

However, Ohio State redshirt sophomore guard Sierra Calhoun hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. “The thing is, the score was wrong. We didn’t lose,” Meier said of the scoreboard error showing Ohio State had won the game. “I’m going crazy, and I thought, ‘It’s just overtime.’ It’s tough, but I said, ‘We didn’t lose, y’all.’ They said, ‘We didn’t?’ I said, ‘No, the score is wrong. Hayes, who shot 9-of-14 from the field and pulled down six rebounds, scored 17 of her points after halftime to help propel the Hurricanes to the win. “We moved her around between different positions on the floor, so she had different matchups. A lot of times, when they were coming out of their presses and stuff, she was able to get mismatched on a guard,” Meier said. “That’s when we first started going to her. Then, it was just that she was so confident and so effective that, no matter, who was guarding her, we just kept going to her. We just kept feeding her.” Davenport shot 5-of-7 from the floor and finished with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, her third-career double-digit rebound performance. Senior guard Jessica Thomas logged 16 points, her seventh consecutive double-digit scoring game to open the season, and a season-high-tying five assists in a career-high 42 minutes. Sophomore guard Laura Cornelius registered 11 points and a season-high-tying five rebounds, while Motley had eight points and a career-high-tying eight assists. Mitchell led all scorers with 29 points, finishing 9-of-21 from the field. Senior forward Shayla Cooper added 17 points and 11 rebounds and junior forward Alexa Hart logged 11 points for the Buckeyes, whose previous two losses both came against top-five opponents. Needing to make free throws down the stretch of both regulation and overtime, Miami concluded the game 25-of-32 (78.1 percent) from the line. The Hurricanes are now 2-1 in their last three games against top-10 opponents, as Miami knocked off No. 14/10 Florida State, 74-56, on March 4, 2016 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Miami is now one of just seven teams in the nation with a top-10 victory, including one of just three with a top-10 road win, joining Maryland and South Carolina. The last time Miami scored 90 points against a ranked team was when it downed No. 11/12 Rutgers, 92-81, at home in double overtime on Dec. 5, 2011. The Hurricanes most recently scored 90-plus points against any opponent on Nov. 28, 2014 in a 95-44 win over Illinois State.
